Thanksgiving Redux: Dining Together - 1950

This is a story of a holiday and home. Helping make ready a celebration is part of the fun. Especially for one of the nicest days of the year - Thanksgiving. There is happiness in the air, and the smell of turkey. Mmmmm, that does look good. Thanksgiving is a day for the best of everything. And friends invited to dinner. We remember the pilgrims had only rough tables on which to serve the first Thanksgiving feast, yet it was shared with friendy indians. It is good to share a holiday with friends. And it is good to have friends who like to come to our home. Good manners make people happy, and good table manners make eating together a happy time. We are thankful for our home and our happy meal. We are glad we have good table manners and know what to do with a napkin, how to use a spoon in eating soup easily, without noise. It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without turkey. We know mother knows how to cook it, and father knows how to carve it. It is fine to sit-up and watch it being carved. You would know this is a holiday plate. At the first Thanksgiving dinner the indians didn't eat turkey with a fork, but it is easy to learn to use one the right way to take small mouthfuls. And how to butter and eat bread in small bites so we never have to talk with food in our mouth. It is good to have learned to chew with lips closed and know when to take a drink. Good table manners keep our meals happy meals and those who eat with us happy. Learning to use a knife the right way takes practice, yet each time we do it becomes easier. What to do with a knife and fork even when finished using them is part of eating well. Holidays are days to be glad, and all good manners are ways to make people glad. We like to offer help, or to help when asked. It is nice to talk with others, and to know when to wait and listen. We are glad to eat neatly without ... [?] Holidays are fun. And it is good to be part of a celebration, it is fine to have learned so much, and to have so much in hour home to make holiday celebrations happy. Now could you wish for more? The End.

Century 21 Calling - Bell Labs promotional film for 1962 Seattle World's Fair

Occassionally, people do get the future right, as they seem to have done in this film, Century 21 Calling, made more than 45 years ago to promote Bell Labs at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair.

Call-waiting, call-forwarding, pagers, auto-dialing, news & weather info retrieval, central computer databases that log all of your private information (so that's where it came from).

Still waiting on that solar battery business, though.

Special mention goes out to the futuristic monorail opener (those never really did catch on, did they?), the perfectly kitsch soundtrack, and the climactic ending where the young couple shoot up the to the head of the Space Needle, as if they were bursting up and out into the future.

Is that Bill Murray singing in the background at the end?

You tell me ...

Virginia native Zanddervon Beliah Lamb, renamed Bela Lam by Okeh Records, performs the song Poor Little Benny with wife Rose Meadows.

With Bela’s brother-in-law Paul and son Alva, they became local favorites near the Blue Ridge Mountain region in the 1920’s, eventually being called to New York City to record six songs.

Influenced by the local religious music of the day, Bela Lam & the Greene County Singers, as they would come to be known, are notable for their shape-note harmonies, highly influential during the period

Flagellants of Nocera Terinese - 1960's

Every seven years in the town of Nocera Terinese, Italy, a mysterious rite hundreds of years old still takes place to this day.
On Good Friday, Flagellants from the surrounding villages perform the ritual of the battenti.

In this tradition, the participants embed shards of glass in pieces of cork, then forcefully drive the makeshift scourges into their bare legs. Bleeding, they jog the route of the Easter procession, enduring the pain and suffering of religious sacrifice in the name of spiritual cleansing.

Have you ever wondered what makes some cities better than others? In public access television pioneer George C. Stoney's How to Live in a City, the argument is that it all depends on the quality of the public space.

New York City folk singer and architectural critic Eugene Ruskin guides us through unique locales which illustrate the fine line between organic and sterile urban spaces. It all depends on a place's ability to attract and sustain, even if only momentarily, a sense of community.

And while some spaces succeed and others fail, one may wonder whether if it was designer's intention to drive people away, or not.

Aside from amusingly hep score and the nostalgic longing for Old New York that the film leaves you with, Stoney & Ruskin's How to Live in a City presents a considerably modern approach to documentary filmmaking, especially when compared to other productions of the time.

This tremendous educational documentary from the mid-1970’s examines the priceless contributions of African-Americans to musical heritage, so closely tied to their unique history in the United States. From Africa upon slave ships captive immigrants brought with them melodies, cadences and rhythms that inarguably gave rise to music considered ‘modern’ today.

Beginning with the genius Louis Armstrong’s triumphant return to Ghana in the late 1950’s, we trace the evolution of music from West Africa to the Virginia colonies of the early 1600’s.
