Once again I was fortunate to be invited to participate in the Wekiva Paint Out Invitational, March 4 - 11. This was the 6th paint out in this natural wonderland. I have been in all 6 so I am qualified to say they have gotten better each year.

The event was hosted by the Wekiva Wilderness Trust and sponsored by Wekiva Island.

Many thanks go to the Paint Out Team: Marce Wildman, Nina Chatham, Mary Sue Weinaug, Carrie Vanderhoef, Greg Whiteside, Rene Laman, Teri Sciliano, Erin Whiteside and Crystal Muntz.

This team of remarkable people worked tirelessly long before, during and after the event to make this and unforgettable experience for both the artists and the public.

I painted "Tom Turkey" at Wekiva Springs during the event. There is a flock of resident turkeys who strut their stuff each morning through the forest. This guy seemed to pose for me and beg to be painted. How could I not?

Thanks to the wonderful Weinaug family, their staff, and the state park rangers who made all of the artists so welcome. We were lavishly cared for with constant attention. I am so spoiled now I don't know what to do!! I can never thank you all enough for being so wonderful and supportive to the artists of the 2012 Wekiva Paint Out. I am so grateful!

Wekiwa State Park in Apopka is an example of nature at her best. A glorious spring head, flowing river, cypress stands and pine forest offer something for everyone who wants to experience the real Florida.

The annual Plein Air Paint Out Event is a treat for artists and the public alike.

Artists are housed in the Group Camping Compound which is usually off-limits to the public. This gives us the unique opportunity to exchange ideas, talk art and paint at all times of the day and night.

During the Paint Out park visitors get to watch and talk with artists as we work to capture the essence of nature.

Sign up today for the "Paint with the Pros" QUICK DRAW in the Wekiva Island on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

Come out to the Wekiva Island on Saturday, March 10, 2012 for the second annual Wekiva Paint Out “Paint With the Pros” Quick Draw. You can paint or draw side-by-side with professional plein air artists and compete for cash prizes (based on number of entries). All registrants will receive a free T-shirt and take away tons of artist's secrets.

Quick Draw registration will take place throughout the week and also on Wednesday morning from 9-11 am at the Wekiva Island gallery. All applicants will need to be at Wekiva Island dockside by 11:30 for transport to the site. This year we will be painting at the Second Flats down river commencing at 12:00 noon and end promptly at 2:00 pm. That gives you two hours to create a masterpiece! Judging will take place from 2:30-3:00 pm and winners will be announced at 3:30 pm. (Registered Paint Out artists are excluded from judging).

You will need to bring all of your own supplies (including a display easel) and must fill out a Quick Draw registration form and pay $10 (cash or check only) prior to participating. The registration form has the rules and regulations you must follow. You may register in person at the Wekiva Island gallery or visit our website, www.wekivapaintout.com for more information.

Notes From My Wekiva Paint Out Journal
I've painted at Wekiva for several years now. It has a wonderful diversity of plants and trees and many beautiful creatures. Wekiva Island and the state park offer the best of Florida to visitors and nature lovers. We are treated like royalty with parties and fun activities for the artists and I get to meet many wonderful people who come to purchase our work and support land and river conservation. I'm looking forward to a wonderful week with others who love the natural world as much as I do.

Wekiwa vs. Wekiva -- Do you know the difference?

When I first moved into the Wekiva area in 1981 I remember seeing signs for Wekiva Springs Road and then visiting Wekiwa Springs State Park and wondering which of the sign companies got it wrong. When my son Mike learned to read, he deduced that "it's like Mr. Chekov on Star Trek mom - somebody was telling the name over the phone and he couldn't say it with a 'v' so it came out wrong on the sign." While this may seem like a plausible explanation (can't say I didn't believe it for awhile) I knew there had to be more to the story.

Many years later, still living in the area (Wekiva Cove) and being very involved with the Friends of Wekiva River and the Wekiva Paintout, has prompted me to explain the difference. I know when I send out correspondence naming the river or the park, some people have noticed the two different spellings in the same letter and asked me about it. But more often than not, they will actually choose one spelling for both in their return correspondence (even to the point of correcting my email), thinking they might embarrass me if they point out what they consider my spelling error. Well, I feel it's past time to answer the question so here it is.

The spring's name is derived from the Creek Indian word "Wekiwa" meaning "spring of water" or "bubbling water." Wekiwa Springs is the headwaters for the Wekiva River. "Wekiva" means "flowing water." In the Wekiva area, when it's spelled with a "v" it's related to the river and if it'spelled with a "w" it's related to the spring.

Now we can all rest easier knowing that this has been explained to everyone! It really all boils down to whether it's a bubble or a flow. How fascinating!

WEKIVA PAINT OUT TURNS FIVE IN 2011!

Come and witness an exciting phenomenon known as Plein Air painting in Wekiwa Springs State Park from March 7-12, 2011! Approximately 30 of the best national landscape painters will be painting in the park and along the river for an entire week! These artists paint outside “en plein air,” meaning “in the open air.” Most Plein Air painters are nature lovers, using the great outdoors as their primary studio, trying to capture our rapidly vanishing landscape to preserve it for future generations. They learn to adapt quickly to changes in light and weather, capturing shadows before the sun inevitably shifts, literally trying to harness the natural light and colors of a specific moment in nature, and transfer it directly onto the canvas. This style of painting allows the public to interact with the artists while they paint and offers a great opportunity to purchase an original work of art from a well known artist at a very reasonable price.

The artists will be painting daily, Monday, March 7th thru Saturday, March 12th. Most will begin at first light and continue painting until sunset. The finished artwork will be available to view and purchase in the Wekiva Island Wetroom/Art Gallery, open Monday thru Thursday from 10:00-6:00 and 10:00-4:00 on Saturday. Each year the artists produce around 250 paintings during the week, all of which are for sale as soon as they are hung. The Wekiva Island (formerly Wekiva Marina) is located at 1014 Miami Springs Road in Longwood (Turn off Wekiva Springs Road onto Miami Springs Rd., which is the north side of the intersection with Hunt Club. Blvd. and Wekiva Springs Rd.).

On Saturday, March 12th we will be having a RIVER DISCOVERY DAY from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. There will be food vendors, canoe rentals, children’s activities, and exhibitors from eco-friendly organizations to help increase public awareness of the Wekiva River and its importance to our central FL community. All activities and entry into the park on Saturday are FREE and the art can be purchased throughout the day.

The most exciting part of this event is that the proceeds from art sales will be donated to the Wekiva Wilderness Trust, a non-profit Citizens' Support Organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment and promotion of nature related activities within the Wekiva River Basin. Come to Wekiwa Springs State Park and paint with the pros. All of the paint out artists will be painting the boil (spring in the park) and you can come and paint with them. Pay $10 registration fee, get a free t-shirt, poster and win prize money. (Pros are excluded from judging and prize money is based on number of entries). Approximately 40 of the best national landscape painters will be painting in the park and along the river for an entire week! These artists paint outside “en plein air,” meaning “in the open air.” Most Plein Air painters are nature lovers, using the great outdoors as their primary studio, trying to capture our rapidly vanishing landscape to preserve it for future generations. They learn to adapt quickly to changes in light and weather, capturing shadows before the sun inevitably shifts, literally trying to harness the natural light and colors of a specific moment in nature, and transfer it directly onto the canvas. This style of painting allows the public to interact with the artists while they paint and offers a great opportunity to purchase an original work of art from a well known artist.

The artists will be painting daily, Monday, March 1st thru Saturday, March 6th. Most will begin at first light and continue painting until sunset. The finished artwork will be available to view and purchase in the Wekiva Island Wetroom/Art Gallery, open Monday thru Thursday from 10:00-6:00 and 10:00-4:00 on Saturday. Each year the artists produce around 250 paintings during the week, all of which are for sale as soon as they are hung. The Wekiva Island (formerly Wekiva Marina) is located at 1014 Miami Springs Road in Longwood and is a supporter of the Paintout.

On Saturday, March 6th, we join forces with our hosts, the Friends of the Wekiva River for the 5th Annual Riverfest from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the park. We will have art on display in the Live Oak Pavilion and there will be live music near the Springhead, food vendors, live animal demonstrations, canoe rentals, children’s activities, Wekiva Scenic Investigation – WSI, guided hikes and exhibitors from eco-friendly organizations to help increase public awareness of our nationally designated Wild & Scenic Wekiva River and its importance to our central FL community. All Riverfest activities on Saturday are FREE and the art can be purchased throughout the day. There will be shuttle busses going back and forth between the park and Wekiva Island all day from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm so you can park at either place. There is a special State Park Entrance Fee of $2 per person ON SATURDAY with children under 12 free. Daily Park Entrance fees are $4 per person or $6 per vehicle up to 8 people.

Happy New Year to everyone! This is an announcement about the ARTFEST this coming weekend. It’s an annual event that is hosted by The University Club of Winter Park and it’s free to the public. There will be refreshments, entertainment and a multitude of vendors selling their wares from around the country. Several of our Wekiva Paintout artists (Kathleen Chenet, Cynthia Edmonds, Sally Evans, Tom Sadler) will be participating in this event so if you want a preview of their work, drop by and pay them a visit.

Winter Park Magazine Cover Artists

Winter Park Magazine is a great supporter of the arts in central FL. Each month they select a FL artist and use their work as the cover. This is a great way to showcase the outstanding artists we have here in the Orlando and surrounding areas.

In 2009, they asked six of our Wekiva Paintout artists to be on the cover. This tells you that our artists are some of the best landscape painters around. The latest artist chosen is Elisabeth Ferber for the November Issue. Elisabeth has been a Wekiva Paintout artist since our inception in 2007. She is not only a fabulous painter but a teacher, a good steward of nature and a great friend to Friends of Wekiva River. One of her paintings, Along the Wekiva, has been published numerous times and is the piece of art that the Winter Park Magazine chose for the cover. She has generously donated prints of this painting to the FOWR so we can sell them as a fundraiser. You can buy a beautiful, matted and ready to frame print for only $40.
