Nick Douwma, better known as Sub Focus, has been producing drum & bass in London since 2003. It wasn’t until a year ago that he released his self-titled, full-length debut album. I mean, I know this came out over 9 months, ago, but damnit is it good. His production is suuuper progressive, with hints of house/trance/dubstep all while maintaining an overall drum & bass feel….real high-energy stuff. What I’m even more excited about than his music is the fact that I have the opportunity to perform with him at the London Electronic Dance Festival in August. I qualified for the JUNO download contest on Lets Mix with my tightened-up/remastered version of last summer’s mix, When Passion Meets Intention, and if I win, I’ll be spinning literally right after Sub Focus. SO, PPLLLLEASE, HEAD OVER TO THIS LINK, LISTEN TO AT LEAST A MINUTE OF THE MIX, AND VOTE 5 STARS! It’ll push me that much closer to performing with this guy along with other huuge names, like David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Aphex Twin, The Bloody Beetroots, Afrojack, and much more…wow, just thinking about that makes my heart beat speed up. Kamp!

Kamp!, out of Poland, are a fresh new electro pop group that’s sure to make their presence known in the scene. I like these two singles a lot, and not only because I’m an avid supporter of making words plural for no reason. I don’t know a ton about them yet, but if their most recent work is any indication of where they’re going, I’m sure they’ll be popping up more and more often as time goes on. Sharaya Mikael

I’m a sucker for beautiful music. Case and point: Sharaya Mikael. When her delightfully tranquil voice meets with the clean, yet tactful melodies of her band, it seems to consistently pull me in and instill this general sense of serenity. I love that; when a group can immediately transport you to a completely different place from when you started listening. If you like these two tracks, you should 100% grab her EP, Far Field, over at Reverb Nation. Keep your eyes out for Sharaya on her Myspace and Facebook as she’s currently on a 50-state tour.

Magic Punches

Magic Punches, out of Portland Oregon, just came out swinging with their new indie pop/rock EP, Brightly Colored Tapes. This being their first mastered work together, you’d think there’d be some obvious flaws but it literally sounds like they’ve been recording together for years. The group consists of Lee Barbara on vocals, guitar, keys, and drums, and Bobby Seus on vocals, bass, keys, and guitar. You can tell, not only by the production quality, but by the shear technical difficulty of their music that they both know what their doing. If the music isn’t impressive enough, they recorded the album themselves, in their own studio that they founded, Color Blocks Productions, all while recording various other Portland area music projects at the same time. BCT was mastered by Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering, out of Boston, MA. I would highly recommend you head over to their site where you can download the EP in it’s entirety. Watch out for these guys as I’m sure they’ve got much more to come.

NSR

I’m a little late on this one, but it’s never too late for one of Welcome Hohme’s favorites, NSR. If you’ve been in any club within the last 6 months, I’m sure you’ve heard Lloyd Banks track; Beamer, Benz, or Bentley. Well, as on-point as we’ve come to expect from NSR these days, he’s come up with a clever take on the track, this time paying homage to not only one of mine, but one of New York’s most beloved breakfast snacks; the Bagel. He’s named it Cream Cheese, Butter, Jelly and even shot a hilarious video to go along with it. Audio Oddity

Matthew Michael, also known as Audio Oddity’s been playing music in Southern Oregon for years now and he’s just starting to put some of his produced/sound engineered work out. Well, I’ll tell you what, he really stepped his game up for Amp Live’s Turn It Up remix contest. He’s due to release his first full-length EP entitled “Hiding in the Light” by January of 2011. HTL, in his words, will be “..a blend of both natural and electronic sounds designed to make you both move your feet and quench your soul.” Jump over to Amp Live’s site to vote for his remix, as he’s currently in the top 20 and the contest ends on the 22nd. Crunk In Public

Crunk In Public, out of my home city, Ashland, OR, are a new Retrostep mashup side-project of producer/DJs, Bassobese and RaSouL. I can’t stop listening to these two bangers I chose to share by them; one of Sublime’s classic, Summertime vs. Vaski, also Flo Rida’s Right Round vs. Sharps. I think a lot of dubstep producers these days are pigeonholing themselves into a genre that may be too niche to garner a serious following. Crunk In Public sounds like they know what they’re doing though. They’ve done a fantastic job adding hard dubstep elements to the track all while maintaining the catchy nature of both songs, which I think will be key for them to continue to gain exposure online while building a more diverse audience. They’ve currently got four dubstep/mashup tracks for free download on their bandcamp site, so hit that up for the additional tracks and may your summer be filled with sunshine, smiles, and tons of that womp.

Zambri

Recently I was lucky enough to be introduced by a friend to one of the members of Zambri, an up-and-coming Manhattan based group fronted by sisters, Jessica and Cristi Jo Zambri. After a few listens through of their new EP, Bang For Changes, I was addicted to their dark yet delightful sound. They’re getting great press these days and their songs are being remixed by a bunch of DJ’s and producers which usually means we’ll be seeing more live shows pop up from here on. Keep your eyes out for them as I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo next year. Check them out on Facebook and some additional tracks on their Myspace.

One of the artists I’ve had the pleasure to see rise from zero to hero is Donnis. As consistent as ever, he’s back with his new mixtape, Fashionably Late. You can literally see how quickly he’s risen solely on the long list of familiar names featured within the new mixtape. Hosted by Dj Ill Will, Clinton Sparks, and DJ Rockstar, Fashionably Late features the likes of Estelle, Yelawolf, OJ Da Juiceman, Colin Munroe, and John Legend and is packed with a bunch of club bangers and familiar samples. We all got a look at his track, Spliff, a few months back and fast forward to now, it’s one of my top read posts yet on the site. These two new tracks are bangers…not just because of the production quality but because of the high level of relatability his lyrics speak to the people in my age group (everyday 20-somethings). Amanda Jenssen

Amanda Jenssen’s track, Do You Love Me, has been one of my favorite songs since I found it back in when I was traveling in Nepal in spring 2008. Even to this day I’m surprised how few people know who she is. I play it nearly every set I DJ and almost every time someone asks me who it is. Well….it’s Amanda Jenssen…and she’s awesome. Most notably, she was a finalist in Sweden’s version of American Idol back in 2007. Since then, she’s released two albums, and they’re both solid. Check her Myspace out here and her site here.

Avett Brothers

Every once in a while you find a song that parallels you’re life so close that it blows you away…I had just moved to Brooklyn when I was recommended this song and needless to say, my emotional reaction to hearing this song the first time was quite strong. This song just screams closure…the lyrics spoke somewhat of a nostalgic confidence for me at the time, accepting that it’s not always easy to embrace the closure of a relationship yet instills confidence that although the road ahead is uncertain, there’s quiet confidence in the decision to move on. Either way, that’s just my personal response to it, nonetheless, it’s a great song. Enjoy. Oh an check the Avett Brothers out here and here.

Theophilus London Pt. 1

I’m not sure if it’s Theophilus himself or his management, or whatever….but whoever’s behind this guy is smart. If you want a clear look into a near perfect model of what marketing should be in the current music industry, look no further than him. He dominates the blogs, he collaborates with the best producers and the hippest musicians, and focuses on the most important thing, live performances. Those of you who you know me, know my strong opinion about the music industry. My boy Loren Wohl, over at RCRDLBL, really hit it on the head in his post regarding Theopilus’s new free-for-download album, I Want You

“Theophilus works this [live performances, corporate endorsements, and licensing] to his advantage. Click over to his MySpace and you’ll see that he’s performing all over the world. Last October He teamed up with Mark Ronson and Sam Sparro to create Chauffeur, releasing a track to promote Ronson’s Gucci boat-sneaker. Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound put out “Humdrum Town” with a music video in January. I Want You is his 3rd mixtape, hyped to the max and stuffed with uncleared samples. That’s another cool thing, when you take money off of the table artists can express themselves without limits. Yes, this is still illegal, but would Whitney Houston really sue him over a track that didn’t have a proper release?
What can aspiring artists learn from him? Make music that’s different (and awesome, of course), give it away for free, wait for the right opportunities, and don’t stop making music.” -Loren Wahl

Laura Jansen’s a Dutch musician based in Los Angeles who first established herself when she became a regular at the Hotel Cafe, and esteemed LA music venue. Now, she’s quite famous out in the Netherlands. She’s toured with two other artists I’ve written about previously, William Fitzsimmons and Joshua Radin and her music, as expected, is just as, if not more beautiful and tranquil than theirs. eRNEST&AMz are an up and coming French and American electro/hip-hop collaboration sure to make their mark on the scene relatively soon. The group’s made up of Ernest Saint Laurent, a producer/multi-instrumentalist out of Paris, and Amz, a vocalist/DJ/producer out of NY. It’s always great to find out an artist you really want to see is playing the day you find out about it….and even more if you can make it. That’s what happened a couple week back at the White Rabbit on Houston. I’d been hearing a lot about this new genre coming up down in Buenos Aires called Digital Cumbia, being pushed a great deal by this dope label called ZZK….so when I heard one of their main artists, Douster, was doing a show with the UK’s Doorly and Fool’s Gold’s Kingdom, I jumped right on it. Well, as expected, they all killed it. I personally spent almost the entire of the night dancing to their progressively addictive sounds. For this post, I chose to include Douster’s remix of Yolanda Be Cool’s Afro Nuts and Kid Sister’s Daydreaming. Look out for Douster on the road and check out his Myspace for some other tracks. Damnit I love this remix so much….and not just because his name rhymes with mine. You may remember it from my most recent mix, Going Internal. Moam’s take on Example’s Watch the Sun Come Up is a banger, not only because of it’s full sound and gratifying ups & downs but because every time I play it live, it makes my heart smile …I wish only the same or better upon you.
