Never underestimate the importance of this handy tool

Do you know what your readers want? Obviously they’re interested in what you have to say because they visit your blog, but do you know which posts are most popular? Likewise are you aware of the topics bringing in the least amount of traffic?

Check Daily

It pays to keep an eye on your statistics. Don’t just glance at them, analyze them. Learn which key phrases bring in the most visitors, and which phrases don't work at all. That’s not to say you should write around your keywords.

However, it would be in your best interests to learn what it is that’s bringing traffic to your blog and figure out how to keep them coming back for more. If that means inserting popular keywords and phrases into your post, figure out how to do it so it makes the most sense.

Plenty of Options

If you don’t already have some sort of statistics tracker installed, do look into one. I like [url=http://sitemeter.com] Site Meter[/link]. It’s free and tells me what I need to know. I can see which keywords work best, who links to me and which days had the most traffic. Some of my fellow bloggers swear by Stat Counter, but it doesn't work well on my blog.

What Can You Learn from Your Stat Tracker?

Some of the things I learned from my Site Meter include:

* Controversy brings in traffic.
* People don’t type like they talk. Many popular key phrases are grammatically incorrect. It pays to link to others. Reciprocal links bring in good traffic.
* It pays to add a link to your blog in your signature when visiting other blogs and forums.

Having a way to analyze my traffic helped me to grow traffic from a few dozen visitors a day to almost two thousand. Don’t underestimate the importance of a stat tracking tool.

What are the Benefits of RSS?:

The main benefit of RSS is that it allows blog readers to receive your blog’s content through their feed reader, rather than having to visit the site. They will appreciate not having so many bookmarks or having to remember your URL.
Why Not Just Use a Bookmark:

With RSS you can subscribe to all of your favorite blogs and read them in one place. Instead of having to use separate bookmarks and land on separate websites. With RSS, the only website you’ll need is that of your feed reader.

What is a Feed Reader?:

A feed reader or news aggregator allows you to subscribe to and read a blog through its RSS feed. Without a feed reader, you won’t be able to subscribe to a blog’s feed through RSS.

How to Avoid Blogger's Block

Most bloggers know the importance of updating often. The last thing we want is for our traffic to drift off because we don't have anything to say. What happens if we experience blogger's block? How can we update, if we don't know what to talk about? Here are some tips for finding ideas.
Make a daily list of blog stops:

Subscribe to plenty of blog feeds. Not only those that are in the same niche groups but anything you find interesting. Expand on other bloggers' ideas or find ideas of your own.
Use your tools:

One of my favorite tools is Google Alerts I currently subscribe to at least a dozen alerts on anything from blogging to jobs to news about people I find interesting. What I love about Google Alerts is how it always throws out an interesting tidbit or two I might not have found on my own. Stumble Upon is another favorite, but it can also be dangerous as it's a great way to procrastinate.

Make lists :

Always keep a list of things to blog about and update often. If a blog topic doesn't immediately come to mind, consult your list.

We all suffer through a block now and then. The important thing to remember is that it's only temporary. Keep up with the feeds, read the news and use tools such as Google Alerts or Stumble Upon. Keep that content, and traffic, flowing!

One of the ways blogs are different from websites is the community. Blogs allow comments, and the more the better. In fact, the livelier your community, the more attractive your blog becomes. Blogs with high comment counts draw others in like magnets. Plus, your existing readers will come back often to see how the discussion is going. Remember, everyone enjoys a good party. Encourage your visitors to return by engaging them in conversation. Here’s how:
Ask questions:

A Question in a post’s title will not only attract readers, but it will also encourage them to answer. Is there something you’ve ever wondered about others in your niche? Ask and they’ll be sure to answer.
Discuss a controversial topic:

Nothing stimulates conversation like controversy. You don’t have to go for shock value but if yours is an unpopular opinion or if you’re in disagreement with a certain news items or author, do discuss on your blog. You’ll be amazed at how emotional some people get!

Things to Consider Before Putting Your Blog Up for Auction

Have you ever wondered how to sell your blog? Many bloggers are now seeing their blogs as an investment opportunity. Why are you selling your blog?

How to Find if Someone is Stealing Your Content

Original content is important to bloggers. It creates trust in your "brand" and also puts you in your search engine's good graces. That's why it's important now and then to make sure no one else is posting your content. The last you want is to be penalized because you’re the victim of a content thief. Here's some tips for on how to tell if someone is stealing your content.
Run the link through Copyscape:

Copyscape is a search engine allowing you to see who has the exact same content as you. Simply post the URL of the page you wish to check into the search engine and soon you'll see a list of all pages with duplicate content.
Run a few sentences through Google:

Take a couple of sentences from your post, place quotes on either end and post them into Google. If there's duplicate content, it should show up in the results.

Blog writing isn't as structured as other types of writing. Most amateur and professional bloggers don't have to follow many of the strict editorial procedures as their professional writing counterparts. That doesn't mean there aren't guidelines, however. There are plenty of reasons to want to be on the first page of a search, the most important is because many people find what they'e looking for there, and don't generally delve further. If you want people to find your blog in a search, it doesn't hurt to use SEO. What follows are some tips for using blog SEO.
Blog SEO:
Use Popular Keywords and Phrases for Titles:

It'd helpful if you entitle each blog post with a different SEO keyword or phrase. Search engines like blogs because they update often. Using keywords in the titles will help to catch their attention. The keywords should make sense, however. Nothing turns a off blog reader more than reading a poorly written blog peppered with keyphrases. Search for keywords using online tools such as this one by Digital Point.

Use Lots of Links:

In addition to to articles and posts outside of your blog, be sure to link to post inside your blog as well. If you wish for certain posts to come up with certain keyword phrases, "anchor" those keywords to the post. For instance, if I wish to have this article rank high in searches for "Blog SEO, I will use a link with those words every time I use this piece as reference.

Make Sure Other Blogs Link to You:

One of the best ways to catch the attention of search engines is to have lots of back links. Create link-worthy content and encourage others to link to your blog and posts.
Update Often:

Search engines like to see lots of content. By posting several times a day, the search engine spiders are more likely to index your pages. Now, of course, you want to provide quality content with important keywords. Don't just provide content for content's sake.
Be Patient:

It takes time to rank in the search engines. If you want to make it onto the first page it can take months, over a year even. While you're waiting, work diligently to provide content and encourage others to link to you.

How to Use a Keyword

If you would like search engines to place your blogs on their first few pages, you might want to do some keyword research to find the best words and phrases for your site. This is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

What is a Keyword?:

A keyword is a word or phrase used to describe a topic to a search engine. For instance, if you're searching for "Blogger.com", you'll type that exact phrase into the search engine, making it a keyword. If I wanted to write about this particular platform, I would research the popular search terms associated with Blogger.com and use the most popular keyword several times in my article in hopes of bringing in those using that particular search term.

How Does One Find Keywords?:

If you want to find the keyword, or keywords, to best optimize your blog post, you'll need to research using some of the popular keyword tools. Google Adwords is one such tool, and Overture is another. One of the better tools is Digital Point which shows keyword results between two different keyword tools. Choose the keyword with the highest amount of searches, this is the term most people use when searching for your topic.

I Found a Keyword, Now What?:

Now that you know what keyword or phrase is most popular for your topic, you'll want to use it to create useful content. Write a post that makes sense and try and use the keyword in the title and several times throughout the post. This will optimize your content for the search engines, and hopefully, help you rank high so others visit your blog.

Think anyone can blog? Think again! While it's true that anyone can start a blog and throw one into cyberspace, the fact is very few people can successfully pull it off. If you want to truly make it as a blogger, you need to have several things. I'm not talking laptops and software, indeed those are important. Most of what you need to become a successful blogger can't be found in stores, or even blogs about blogging.

1. Passion for Your Topic
If you choose a topic you love, your passion will show through. If you choose a topic you don't know much about only because of the high paying keywords, that will be apparent as well.

2. Creativity
You're going to need to update your blog, at the very least, several times a week. A successful blogger is creative enough to come up with fresh, engaging content every time.

3. A Good Idea
Not the same idea as everyone else. Not a copycat of someone else's blog. But your own unique, good idea. If you want to make it as a blogger, you have to have great content and a fresh idea.

4. A Good Work Ethic
If you think blogging is just writing a quick five minute post and forgetting about it until next time, you couldn't be more wrong. You're going to spend hours on your blog designing it, writing it, promoting it and more. Most bloggers spend two to five hours on each blog every day.

StumbleUpon or Digg?

So, you have a great new post, one you feel others will surely appreciate. How will you call attention to it, StumbleUpon or Digg? Both have the potential to send huge amounts of traffic your way, but is one better than the other?

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a very cool social networking and bookmarking site. The premise is simple, install the toolbar, click the icon to surf, and give the thumbs up sign to the blogs and websites you like. Submitting your blog in this manner will enter it into the StumbleUpon queue. Now other Stumblers might come upon your blog through their own surfing.

The more Stumblers giving your blog the thumbs up, the more traffic you will receive. Many sites and blogs receive thousands of stumbles in a single day thanks to member approval.

The thing to remember is that large bursts of traffic can be short lived. While you might see flowing traffic from StumbleUpon for a good week or two, after that you might get only a stumble or two here or there. The good news is that you more than likely landed a few new regular readers. Super Stumbles might not happen often, but there's a good chance you'll continue to receive traffic from StumbleUpon weeks after submitting your blog.

Digg

Digg is a whole other ballgame. Like StumbleUpon, it's a simple premise. You submit your article or blog post to Digg in hopes of other "Diggers" voting on it. If you're lucky you'll get a few dozen Diggs. It's not easy to get huge amounts of Diggs, and even more difficult to get your article on the front page. If you do, your traffic will sky rocket to amazing levels.

Digg traffic doesn't last long, however. If you receive lots of Diggs, you might see traffic for a few days. If you only get a Digg or two, you'll probably only see that many visitors. Unlike StumbleUpon, where your blog may continue to turn up when Stumblers surf weeks later, with Digg, the more time that passes, they less likely it is for someone to come upon your post.
Which is best for your blog?

Both Digg and StumbleUpon have their pros and cons. If you can submit to both, by all means do so. You're sure to get some traffic as a result. You have a better result of being Stumbled than Dugg. Since StumbleUpon allows Stumblers to visit random sites, the chance of someone landing on your blog is a lot higher than if they were to find it on Digg. Unless you're in the top couple of pages, most people won't know you exist.

Test them both out to see what works best for you. Both Diggers and Stumblers love to share great content. Give them something to talk about and submit to both.

Having read the blogs of many successful bloggers I have tried to analyze what are the strategies they follow to take their blog to the top of the blogosphere. What makes the A-list bloggers tick? What are the characteristics which make the successful blog stand out?

I have classified the strategies followed by highly effective bloggers under four main types..............

CREATE A BLOG

The first step is to create a blog as obviously you cannot have a successful blog without going through the agony and ecstasy of creation.

1. Choosing a subject : If you want to blog successfully you have to choose a subject close to your heart. A subject which you should be passionate about. This has two advantages. One you will never get bored and stop posting to your blog. Secondly since you are passionate about the subject you will probably already have a large amount of information on the subject and - as the heart rules the head - are actively involved in finding more about it. It will also help a lot if you are blogging about your career and area of expertise. It will help even more if you choose to provide solutions to common problems in your blog. This is better than having an opinion blog full of rants and raves unless you are already a top-notch journalist with an existing audience.

2. Choosing a Blogging Platform : If you are a beginner go for the free options like Blogger.com or Wordpress until you get in a rhythm. If you are undecided consult the Ultimate Blogger-Wordpress Comparison Guide before making your decision.

3. Choosing a Domain Name and Hosting : Until you become set try out your skills on a Blogger or Wordpress domain. After reaching perfection you can transfer to a well thought out and keyword researched domain name. Blogger gives free hosting to go along with that so you only have to shell out a small sum for the domain name. You do not have to worry about bandwidth or space. 5. Optimizing your Blog : This forms an important part after creating your blog as you want your blog to appear on the first page of the search results returned by the search engines. This is also known as Search Engine Optimization.
