MTN LFDW; Focus- Sunny Rose

The 29th of October was the last for the MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2011, may i point out that it was indeed an eye-opening one (though i did not attend but have been following with the various medias, kindly forgive!), as the pictures of different designs paraded on the runway came across...oh boy! what creativity and talent abound with the designers! However one collection that indeed caught my discerning eye was that of the couture label SUNNY ROSE by Maureen Okogwu.

Maureen Okogwu, the 35year old-creative mind behind the couture label SUNNY ROSE who also loves deep sea diving and whose definition of style is timeless elegance is a Msc degree holder from the European University in Montreux in Switzerland. Hails from the Delta region of Nigeria and has been an international model for over 10 years- spotted by a modelling agent while having dinner in Lausanne in Switzerland...may i mention she's a niece to the former first lady of Nigeria, the late Mrs Maryam Babangida.

Maureen kicked off her label Sunny Rose in 2006 though she started with accessories and handbags, she now has one of her icons -Oprah Winfrey, possessing one of her bags and hopes Michelle Obama, who is her second, will follow suit soon.

A major trend for fall 2011/12 and also one very evident and claiming itself “a-to-reckon with” fashion trend in the spring/summer 2011/12. The tartan trend better known for being a symbol of Scotland’s rich heritage but popularly referred to as “plaid” in North America is one trend that is standing undisputed- may I mention that it’s not just integrated into the Scottish culture but also in that of Nigerian history- our own dear “Ghana must go” bags.

It is advisable to go for tartan fashion in pieces such as jackets, skirts, bags and shoes. Tartan trousers almost look disastrous and it has the ability to make one look like a clown-

The spring / summer 2012 men’s collection have been shown on the catwalks around the world and we have oohed! aahed! And done the “no thanks, we’ll pass”. I believe the nitty gritty behind every fashion fad and trend is to add or upgrade one’s style sense and move one farther into the fashion of the future- you know that period when we men will start dressing like robots...lol. Not to get too carried away however, there are some very stylish, future-pointing directions in the 2012 showcased-fashion on many a-designer catwalks. Gucci for one had the sartorial in colours of light and dark grays, white, black and navy while the more casual leather jackets were in red and burgundy- a cool prediction for glam colours come Olympic 2012. Truth is, I could go on telling you about the spring/summer 2012 men’s collection, but I do think it’s just going to be golden words falling on gold ears- it gets in, absorbed but eventually gets lost, to make sure the new trends and the revamped ones get well incorporated in your wardrobes, I have picked two style icons whose timeless style speaks what every style-savvy man should be.

KANYE WEST

Rapper, singer, record producer and DW fashion brand designer. Mr. West is known for his well-informed style. He admits he loves riding the line between luxury and casual when it comes to fashion- very evident in the way he mixes his assembles. So timeless is his style, one can say he’s been wearing the spring/summer 2012 even before it came on the catwalks

Ways to incorporate the style of Kanye into yours

1. Lanvin seersucker jacket-an essential item of Kanye’s style. it says everything Mr West is- riding the line between casual and luxury.

2. Gray T-shirt; versatile and goes well with most jacket colours.

3. Dolce & Gabbana ,The One fragrance; a smell I recommend for men who love their smell to match a charming personality.

4. Full-18K-Gold-Gold-Dial-Rolex perpetual men’s watch; Never undermine the mark of class a gold watch can add to one’s look, not to mention it being a Rolex.

5. Black jeans; as timeless as blue jeans is, a black jeans has got its place too. Get a good pair.

6. Brown jeans belt.

7. Topman’s brown loafers.

2. White t-shirt; known for its language of “fresh and clean” . make sure you get one of very high quality.

3. Gold wrist bangle; if you follow Mr West closely, you will know he’s a lover of the element. Wear yours in a more minimalistic manner.

4. Leather men’s wrist accessory; rave of the moment, the equivalent for the ladies arm party.

5. Black dress pants; this helps you ride the line between casual and luxury perfectly when paired with the white t-shirt.

6. Louis Vuitton belt; just in case you don’t know, Mr. West is also the Louis Vuitton Don, so it only makes sense to go LV on your belt.

7. Commes des Garcon pefume ; just in case you are wondering what perfume does the DW fashion label designer wears, the answer is- Mr. West is a lover of scents, so he stocks a lot, but the Comme des Garcon perfume is one of his favourites.

8. Christian Louboutin Tasselimo loafers for men; so wicked a shoe, it bites!

DAREY ART ALADE

Recording artist, music producer, TV/Radio personality and philantrophist.

Darey, a man of style and classic elegance, believes style should be comfortable irrespective of whether it’s in trend or not. With three albums to his credit and the fourth one “Darey” gaining massive acclaim by the day, the Ba-Ni-Kidi star’s definition of a stylish man is one who understands his body and dresses to fit. Mr. Alade’s personal style can be described as fusing old and new to birth something manly-beautiful but quirky.

WAYS TO ADAPT DAREY’S STYLE INTO YOURS.

1. The waistcoat: reminiscent of the old Italian way of life, the waistcoat is an item to Darey. Get in neutral colours.

2. The shirt: any shirt of good reputable manufacture will do, however pay attention to patterns that will suit you- that’s one style advice Mr. Alade will always give you.

3. Bow ties: this particular one is by David Hart& Co. Darey is a lover of accessories as such, though he prefers those by UK based Ghanian designer- Ozwald Boateng.

4. The wrist watch: Diesel-Mens-Black-SBA-Oversized-Ana-Digi-Black-and-Silver-Dial-Watch. Versatile enough for both day and evening wear.

5. The evening pants: spells elegance and class coupled with opulence.

6. The fragrance: Miller Harris Vertiver Bourbon for men- clean, fresh and sexy.

7. The Patent shoes: Darey is an aficionado of shoes especially patent ones.

1. The aviator sunglasses: don’t be deceived – it’s either aviators or is not. Classic design of sunglasses they are. Try any by Carrera or Ray-ban.

2. The white shirt: Darey loves high-collar neck shirts which happen to come out very good when worn with a blazer/jacket. Hawes and Curtis design high collar neck shirts in their Hurst and York ranges.

3. The black corduroy blazer: there’s something about corduroy that can be elegant atimes despite it being a hard-wear.

4. The pocket square or dress handkerchief: Darey’s favorite accessory if I can speak for him. My advice is to get one in gold with blue details for this particular ensemble and make sure it’s silk.

5. The watch: just in case you don’t know, Mr Alade loves the G-shock watch. Very suitable for the man that moves his arm around a lot.

6. The black belt with big buckle: to adapt Darey’s style proper, you going to need to get a belt like this with a big fanciful buckle to wear with your jeans.

7. The jeans: The Ba-ni-kidi star is reported to have said he would never wear the skinny jeans, it could be slim or straight or bootcut but definitely not skinny….well the talented singer really does know his style. This one by Vivienne westwood for men.

8. The fragrance: : Bleu de Chanel- woody aromatic fragrance for the man who defies convention, and resists the ordinary every day, finding satisfaction in the unexpected. Describes as fresh, clean and profoundly sensual- I think it just might be time to let “her” start blaming it on your scent rather than the alcohol.

9. The shoes: did I mention that Darey loves Patent shoes? Well here it is again, Darey loves patent shoes….so do I!

A man's base elements- 10 elements of the season to be in your AMATRIX-wardobe or else you toast!

A man's wardrobe never really changes...season in, season out- we wear our pants, shirt and jacket combo even if some designer attempts to break out of the mould and parades the Scottish-inspired kilt or other form of men's skirt on his runway for the season- it turns out he alone wears it, which is only fair since he alone designed it. Though we are more interesting in terms of colours now- part thanks to Paul Smith, who fought hard for years like an anti-government activist fighting for colours; to have our minds changed against the monochrome we men are so comfortable with.
Now, guys under the cover of being metrosexual, wear all from pink, red, orange to cerulean-blue, all back to pink again...a trend i prefer to tread softly (*looking back to check my progress*, i havent taken more than a tiny weeny step- a pair of purple loafers is my wildest stray into the colour spectrum craze, but i ll rather stay that way...cheers..lol).

however if i am considering adding cool super items to my wardrobe this fall, it is these TEN. Here s my list of what i feel every man between the age of 18-35yrs got to have this season for the ULTIMATE inclination towards overt-sexy...it's shaken, not stirred baby!

1.The Biker Jacket

some believe the ladies love a biker man...they say he can give that feel of a super power machine running under your legs..hmm! i still believe it is the jacket that holds all the power though, so if you ride a super fast bike and dont have the jacket, dont be disappointed if you dont hold appeal with the ladies...you can ride a bike to an event, but how you gonna tell the ladies in the hall you v got the biker man charm...maybe you will just have to carry your bike with you to the hall too..lol! GET A JACKET and dont be a jack-ass!

2.The denim jacket

it s that element that s capable of giving that rough-sexiness to your look. you can layer with it as Kanye puts it, wear under your pea- coat or simply throw over your tee. A must-have item

3. The white tee shirt.

white spells fresh and clean..when it's a tee shirt..it oozes sexiness...in my opinion

4.Linda Farrow Eye wear.

average price is about 240 dollars a piece, i admit it's quite pricey but i can't deny they are a spectacle to the eye...and i mean that literally and metaphorically...

5. The sand coloured pants

No need mentioning these are very suitable for casual themed affairs.

6. The wrist watch

A very important aspect of dressing up to a man of style. It's a must to smell right for the occasion...yes, it is! I really do not do the latest fragrance thingy...i just go by the smell that *scatter my senses in a highree way"..lol. anyways here are my top picks

...and now for the last but not the least in any way...this one that qualifies for a TEN is not " a thing" that stays in your wardrobe or belong there. Like NEYO said, " if i am a star, then she's the sky"
she belongs in your heart..

So to have a beauty with brains hold you as hers, pray God helps find you one as such of these...It's always a God-given gift... no man is complete without a woman!

The forties is known for its glamour. super glamour i call it and that's because it's the era of pearls and the pencil skirt- the sexiest form of skirt a woman can adorn. The forties fashion is believed to still hold allure till today, thanks to the forced simplicity on designers as to what they could design and what they could not. why the strict rules u may ask, the 1940's is also known as the war-decade as it was the time of the world war 2. Materials needed to make clothes were needed for manufacture of military supplies as well, hence the rationing and dis-allowance of frivolities at design.

The forties fashion was also characterised by extravagant hairstyling and the very famous red-lipstick

Adrogynous Fashion; chic up in men's fashion this fall!

Androgyny defined as having the characteristics of both sexes, once again has found its way into top fashionable trends this season. Androgyny, also known as “boy meets girl” fashion was first apparent in the early 40’s, to help women with more practical clothing post war as their busy working lives then demanded.

Here are ensembles put together by me to wake you up to the new 2011/2012 androgynous fashion. In all of these ensembles, I have tried incorporating subtle feminine pieces into each look- this is to vamp up the sexiness attached to the whole trend the more, what was I thinking? Well, if a chic must ride a fast bike, she might as well just do so in a pair of Louboutin and super-sexy shorts!


Styling option 1: Perfect for the office, that is if you do not have strict uniform codes. The blue chiffon shirt softens the overtly masculine look men’s wear ensemble could atimes have. Swap the yellow print silk scarf for the blue pocket square in the jacket to totally pull this look off.

Styling option 2: Red carpet worthy, cinema- friendly! I call this particular look men’s fashion gone “viva glam”. Maybe there’s some truth to the saying after all “What a man can do….”!

Styling option 3: Simplicity meets understated elegance! Very chic and versatile.

Black is great and it s unarguably a classic in every woman's wardrobe, but then there should always be an alternative, do you not think so? This season, jewel tones like sapphire blue, amethyst purple, ruby red, citrine yellow, garnet red, emerald green,and topaz yellow clothes are so much hot on trend and the very good thing about them asides being a great alternative to black, is that they look good on almost everyone....let me not forget to mention that, you can wear them both day and night too...pretty nice, dont you ladies think?

Darey, a R'n'B artiste from Nigeria( recently crowned king of r n b in Nigeria by CITY PEOPLE MAGAZINE) getting widely recognised internationaly- presently on tour in UK to promote his first international single release..."THE WAY YOU ARE", is someone that knows his style...and knows it well . Here i present you pictures and video of his appearance at the Alicia Keys Black Ball ( well plus some extras too..), for his SEEMINGLY TIMELESS style. I found out that he was wearing a JAMES HILMAN

suit- a designer who just recently admitted to getting inspiration from crude oil and the distillation process surrounding it as he believes it is such a driving source of life for the human race...i agree with him on that....and with darey's suit.. i strongly cast my vote for him. The shirt is said to be a Nico Didona ... a label know for it's production of directional, cutting edge, quality garments using innovative tailoring techniques with attention to detail.

...and his shoes...i didnt forget!..the icing on the cake.. shoes are by TED BAKER..i love the shoes myself. Note: patent shoes are very suitable for evenings, yes you can wear them for other occassions..even to the office if the rule of your employers dress code is not against them..that is!

Men's guide to style this spring/summer ...(focus "Pomp and Circumstance" by Alexander McQueen)

Here i bring you a a simplified version of Men's style for spring/summer 2011, not in style nor elegance ( those are still very much in check) but in cost and probably "vanity"... i mean why would one spend about 500 pounds on a pair of trousers if its not vanity. Anyway, after going through what most designers have proposed suitable for men to wear this summer, I have finally picked on the "Pomp and Circumstance" s/s 2011 Alexander McQueen collection- the first menswear collection under the artistic ability of SARAH BURTON (if the name rings a bell, you probably right, as she designed Kate Middleton's dress for the royal wedding..the bride now royal wife that is).

The collection showcases England according to Alexander Mcqueen and it boasts cutting edge design and innovative fabric technology...but here i am focusing on achieving these elegant looks on a very much smaller budget and most importantly adding a sense of individuality to each outfit. points to note includes; *looks do not have to be copied 100% as that would wipe out any trace of your individuality, making you a mere form of advert for the designer ..(more to come)

Now with this particular look, i am going basic on this.. i am re-inventing this in black and white instead of the hue its originally presented on the catwalk...however, if you ll prefer the grey/concrete hues for yours, all you need to do is get your items in same style i ll be presenting you (that s if you like it) but in your preferred colours.

This look is one that is quite easy to adopt but one that might require bespoke service of a good tailor. So, take a cue from the designer (yes, we v been doing that, i know..lol) and make a splendid jacket in damask..same gold as shown on runway and pair with...

....white formal shirt

...+ woven tan belt

....+ black pants...

...and finish off with tan leather shoes... for more touch of individuality..you can add a pocket square in red

In the world of finance+motivation speakers, you often hear them say "you dont need money to make money"-what i think? i think not! you definately need money+good thinking to make money. Same can be said of fashion, when it s often said by some fashionistas that one doesnt need money to look good-what i think again? Crap in this case! let's face it You need money if you want to look good, not to mention to" look you!" if you think looking cheap is you, pls let me know.

So, it can be quite unpractical preaching fashion to a geek-convert and not talking about making money and sustaining it.

As far as i m concerned, when it comes to fashion and the way it deals with people, there are three elements involved

-personal style

-a sense of fashion

-sophistication; this is where money comes in, you might have style and a very good sense of fashion, but without money, you can't achieve sophistication...hoo ha!

Let me spell out sophistication to you, it s "ultimate simplicity" it is the difference btw some chunky sports watch and a movado, it lives btw a toothless grin and a heart-melting smile,some ebook reader and an Ipad,
simply the difference btw beer and wine, grass and grace, as different as spoon and fork!

True! 2009 was around and it’s gone now. It nevertheless did not fail to leave fashionable prints and stylish trails behind that seem to transcend time and influence lifestyles in the year to cap a decade of fashion.

2009 was a year of the gladiators, and truly they came in different sizes and skillful designs, invading the fashion coliseum…at least in Nigeria! Adored by the trendy at hearts, adorned by the Spartans at feet.silver gladiator sandals

How it’s getting better
The gladiator sandal now has the gladiator high heeled boot version.

Ways to wear this-

Wear with a great pair of skinny jeans tucked in.
Wear on a skirt short enough not to overlap the ends of the boots-let there be space for skin between boots and the hem of the skirt.
Wear on a pair of biker-shorts/rolled up shorts long enough to cover just the end of the boot.
