NIGERIA IN ANOTHER SHOW OF SHAME

The smooth conduct of the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Abuja was yesterday disrupted for more than 30 minutes following power outage at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel plant, which sparked a melee as the audience thought a terror attack was under way.

The development forced some dignitaries, including the United States (U.S.) Envoy to Nigeria, Ambassador Terence P. McCulley, to hurriedly flee the hotel despite being scheduled to address the media at the end of the session, which was cut short by the power outage.

President Goodluck Jonathan had declared the summit open with a speech and had left the venue before the power cut.

However, the hotel’s Public Relations Manager, Sola Adeyemo, attributed the outage to “a very high voltage” from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) forcing the hotel’s power generator to switch off.

But by the time power was restored some dignitaries, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lamido Sanusi, who were discussants at the interrupted session were gone.

The discussions however resumed after much persuasion of delegates who later gained their composure and used the blackout period to help themselves to snacks and tea served at the fountain arena outside the congress hall.

Can you cast your mind back to when you started?

Yes. Whenever I see an upcoming artistes, I just say to myself that he or she is trying. But one can’t really compare now to when we started. Then, most Nigerian TV and radio stations don’t play Nigerian music or support musicians.

But now, everyone of them is keying into what we do and it makes it really easier. Then, we had to come to Lagos because we wanted to be big in the industry. But now, an artiste could be anywhere and still make it big in the industry.

So how tough was it for you guys when you started?

It was so tough that we had to think of how to combine schooling with music. We had to think of our parents, how to hussle and where we came from. Generally, it was tough and that’s why we’re not surprised at where we are and what we have today.

Although some fans and friends may see our success story as a big deal, the truth is that success has become part of us and we do whatever our fans want. But it wasn’t so easy in the beginning

So how do you relax?

We invite friends, watch movies, play soccer, swim and hang out with babes. But there’s hardly any weekend that we don’t have one concert or the other. So we hardly rest at weekends unless when we have shows in Lagos.

Do you live a normal life?

No way. We can’t even take a stroll on our street without people screaming our names. My normal life included receiving my friends and hanging out with them on the streets. But we can’t do that anymore because people won’t just let us be.

Our normal lives are gone, seriously. We like Akara (beans cake) but we can no longer stroll out to buy Akara anymore. Even if we’re in the car and we need something, our P.A would be the one to get it. We miss our freedom.

There was a time our brother told us to support some youths we see playing football on the streets. So we bought kits and others stuff.
One day, we paid them a surprise visit while they were playing and introduced ourselves, gave them our support and told them that we’d like to play with them once in a while.

And it has really helped us because we go there to play on Sundays. But we’re more careful not be get injured. And we miss going out to eateries and local joints like the Mama-put.

So how then do you get to eat food prepared by the Mama put?
We send someone to do so. If it were in those days, we’d go there and point at what we want to eat. The problem is, when we send someone to do the buying, they wouldn’t know what we’d prefer.

I do R‘n’B; I do highlife. But I’m more of an R‘n’B singer. The dreadlocks are a result of a style I used to do with it. After some time, I decided to change it. This is my new look.

After you released One in a Million a few years back, you disappeared. What happened?

After One in a Million, I had about three videos. They all enjoyed massive airplay. My new single is coming out very soon. We’re running a promo already.

Penultimate Saturday, 18th June 2011, one of Nigeria’s celebrated A-List actresses was caught in the act with foreign-based singer, Wyclef Jean.

The venue was the Grand Marquee on the grounds of the Lagos Preparatory Shool, 36 Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos and the occasion was the inaugural edition of the Foundation To Future Charity and Fundraising Ball of the Lagos Preparatory School.

On the bandstand were several artistes, prominent among them was one-time Haitian Presidential aspirant and singer, Wyclef Jean who gave a superlative performance alongside other major acts both foreign and Nigeria based.
After the cocktail party, live auction, dinner and performances from Wyclef Jean, American R’n’B singer, Alexander O’ Neal alongside major acts from Nigeria, the show came to an end.

The very grand affair was witnessed by dignitaries which also had showbiz stars both from the movie and music sector. As to be expected, they all waited behind to mingle, network and broker one or two deals with the American acts.

While this was going on, one very popular female music promoter had other plans for the act, unknown to the others, she had already set machinery in motion for a female companion for the American act. This we hear is her stock in trade which she gets big bucks from apart from music promotion she’s also good at.

Those who know her well know she has pimped several celebrity babes for well-known international showbiz stars and this explains why the babes all flock around her. So to satisfy this very talented foreign act, she had to give him no other person than one of our very best and beautiful actresses who readily played along, knowing the financial reward and international connections she will get from the romp.

So thinking they were very discreet about it, they lodged right there at the big lodge within the venue of the show where a suite was already in place for the singer and they were locked up together all night.

The acrimony between two leading musicians, Michael Ugochukwu, a.k.a Ruggedman and Akande Abolore also known as 9ice, has taken a turn for the worse, with Ruggedman boasting that “9ice is my boy. He met his wife through me.”

9ice’s estranged wife, Toni Payne, is at the centre of the strained relationship between the erstwhile best friends.

Just as the acrimony between Ruggedman and 9ice was ebbing, the former again stirred the hornet’s nest in a new Yomba TV programme called Gbamu Gbanu.

Speaking in Yoruba language on a television programme Gbamu Gbamu, which will hit the screens on African Magic Yoruba on DSTV by 1 July 2011, Ruggedman said that 9ice had his first major break when he brought him on stage at a Nigerian Breweries show held at Mothelan’, Opebi, Ikeja. about six years ago.

He said that at the show, he introduced Toni Pyne to him and that was how they started, adding, “I don’t know that it is a crime to introduce someone to a woman. I wouldn’t have done that.”

Ruggedy Baba, as Ruggedman is also called by friends and fans, said when the story was making the rounds, he was waiting for 9ice to debunk it and since he failed to do so, he decided to state his own side, declaring, “he is a boy I trained by taking him to shows and that was what gave birth to the song, Opomulero.”

Gbenga Adeyinka, the brain behind the television programme, a top comedian and master of ceremonies, said Gbamu Gbamu, which has different segments like jokes, mock news and interviews, among others, is a way of bringing out his talent to show that he can also present a Yoruba programme.

He added that top comedians like Ali Baba, Omo Baba, Tee A and others will feature in the weekly programme.

Bigiano Survives Car Accident

Nigerian singer Bigiano probably would still be on his knees right now. Why you ask? Well, the entertainment industry would have lost yet another talented act as the former Triple B singer was reportedly involved in an auto-mobile accident which almost claimed his life on Monday, May 30, 2011.

The Punch reports that Bigiano who was returning from Oyo state Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s inauguration, was riding back to Lagos with an aide when a trailer swerved into their vehicle’s lane just after the Shagamu junction.

In an attempt to avoid the on-coming trailer and avert a head-on collision, he made a sharp turn and bumped into a ditch. Before he regained control of the vehicle, Bigiano says he found his car under the trailer and seconds later, in a near-by bush.

Nobody was severely injured. The airbag helped cushion the impact, says Bigiano.

‘It was a close shave honestly, the car is beyond repairs, but I thank God I am still alive’, Bigiano told Shina Oyetayo of The Punch Newspaper.
