INTERVIEW: JAMB Approved Low Cut-Off Mark For Varsity Admission To Appease Owners Of Private Universities—ASUU President

2020-06-19T12:47:00.002-07:00

When we keep proliferating institutions that we don't plan to fund, we compound the problem of public education and it seems like we don't have the interest of the people at heart.

Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), speaks with SaharaReporters on the decision of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which recently approved 160 and 140 as the cut-off marks for 2020/2021 public and private university admissions, among other issues.

The approval of 160 as the cut-off mark for 2020/2021 university admissions has attracted criticisms, what led to the reduction of this cut-off mark?
They decided after they met with the leadership of universities in Nigeria.

The leadership consists of vice-chancellors and registrars. From our knowledge of the system, we believe that no public university in Nigeria would willingly admit anybody below 160 (UTME score) but as for private universities, they need low cut-off marks to attract students.

You would have seen that even though we have over 70 private universities in Nigeria, they still have less than five per cent of the students’ population. What that means for them is that they will run out of business if they do not attract more students. That is why we have been advocating that the focus should be on the public university; by addressing quality education in Nigeria.

This would ensure that the children of the poor do not drop out of the education system.

Private universities, essentially, are established to meet the needs of the elites. When you look at the structure of those universities, hardly will you see the children of the poor admitted there.

The children of the poor are not there; the children of the elites are there and they can do anything to ensure that they keep them in business. Private universities are essentially business centres and that is why you get all kinds of reports coming from there.

Maybe you can name one or two that have managed toscale the hurdles of toeing the line of quality but we have our reservations about them. More importantly, if the Nigerian government should do what we ask of them, if they should meet our demand to fix public universities in Nigeria today; I can assure you that private universities will fizzle out.

It is because of that fear that JAMB must bend backwards to accommodate their interest. That low cut-off mark is to appease owners of private universities, not public ones.

Do Nigerian universities have the facility and capacity to admit more students due to the reduced cut-off mark?

It is not about the lack of facilities that hinder universities from admitting more students. It is simply a problem of the government not living up to expectations. The government is establishing more universities every day; two universities of transportation were established and the Army university in Biu. The National Assembly is pushing that they have campuses in every geo-political zone.

What we need are not necessarily new universities but an expansion, renovation of the existing ones, stocking their libraries and equipping their laboratories such that we can have state-of-the-art facilities to train 21st-century graduates.

But when the government is busy proliferating universities that they do not have the plan to fund, they are compounding the problems.

The 12 universities established by the Goodluck Jonathan administration are like crisis centres now, less than 10 years after they were created.

Why would the government establish universities that they don't have plans to fund? In other climes, when you establish a new university, you would have something like a five-year plan to develop the university, but that hardly happens here. Once they create a new university by fiat, they will turn to TETFUND to get money for the take-off. The 12 new universities established by the Jonathan administration, took money from TETFUND.

When we keep proliferating institutions that we don't plan to fund, we compound the problem of public education and it seems like we don't have the interest of the people at heart.

What are the other issues that have not been addressed?

Our politicians in Nigeria have turned universities into constituency projects that they have to take back to their constituencies. They are talking about campuses for Army University, the Navy-University is coming up, and the Air Force University is in the pipeline as well.

At the end of the day, they will also have campuses. Lawmakers at the National Assembly who are moving the motion for having them in each geo-political zone want the campuses to be located in their villages. That is the level of recklessness with the circle of politicians in Nigeria.

They don't have the interest of the system at the heart otherwise what we are witnessing today in Nigeria's public university system should not be happening. They are turning universities into nursery and primary schools such that somebody can just wake up today and say, “I want to have one in this neighbourhood.”

We have to place an embargo on establishing new tertiary institutions and come back to our agreement that they will re-fertilize existing public universities with a total of N1.3tn.

If the government had kept faith with our agreement with them in 2013 that they will inject funds into universities in Nigeria, by now, we would have seen a significant turnaround. Our laboratories would be able to respond to emergencies as we have seen with COVID-19.

Our hostels are accommodating 12 instead of 4 and students are sleeping in shifts. We found that chemistry laboratories are using kerosene stoves instead of burners and they fetch water to the laboratories. You can imagine the kind of results that will come out from such a laboratory.

What should be done?

The best thing for the government to do is to declare a state of emergency on the Nigerian education system, particularly on university education because that is the crowning glory of education. From university education, you will begin to see cascading effects and it would rub on lower levels.

That is the best way to guarantee the future of education in the country otherwise, we would continue to dance in the circle of ignorance and we will be producing graduates that we cannot vouch for.

A highly recognized Woman at the Top: Astounding Womanhood of Kay Ovia

2020-06-19T11:39:00.000-07:00

JIM OVIA(right side) AND KAY OVIA(left side)

The name Jim Ovia certainly rings a bell for every man and his dog.
The founder and chairman of Zenith Bank has been in the limelight for so long; he has all but attained iconic status. The name Kay Ovia, on the other hand, rings a bell to few. And the amazing wife of the Zenith Bank supremo wouldn’t have it any other way.

She could be forgiven for riding her husband’s coattails to garner some reflected fame but Kay is cut from more authentic cloth.

She blends grace with reserve, magnificence with taciturnity. She is hardly likely to shun a well-meaning invitation. But, having arrived garbled in all the accouterments as befits someone of her status, she is never going to try to be the center of attention or belle of the ball.

She does not traffic in public admiration and has no use for hired vuvuzelas. It does not matter that she is married to Jim Ovia, one of the biggest power brokers in the banking sector. She is her own person and plies her own trade, away from the blinding glare of cameras fishing for gossip.

Kay is the chairman of the board of directors of Cyberspace Limited, a leading software engineering company in Lagos. She also holds forth at Quantum Markets Limited, where she is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. She is an alumnus of Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) where she holds an MBA degree in Management.

Her love for humanity knows no bounds and she spares no expense to translate this into impactful action. She has floated several initiatives to transform
the lives of the youth, especially the underprivileged ones. She is the initiator of the Star Rising Talent Hunt for children and young people. Her stated motive is to unearth gems that might otherwise forever remain undiscovered due to deprivation.

Despite her unassuming nature, Kay cannot quite avoid the limelight. She doesn’t speak much but her actions sing her praises louder than she could ever have.

2020-06-11T12:47:00.002-07:00

Fans of Afrobeat superstar, Wizkid can’t take it anymore as they hit the street, protesting for the album to be released with immediate effect.

It’s been a long time since the singer promised his fans of a new album titled “Made In Lagos”. News of the album has kept fans awake all day and night in other to miss the link when it is released.

It is starting to look like a mirage as the singer hasn’t updated his fans on the supposed album. Quite a number of them have lost hope and may probably switch camps as the singer has already fallen below the pecking order in music business per billboard’s calculations.

Some fans who can’t take it anymore have hit the street of Nigeria to protest on Wizkid’s decision to keep them in the dark about the forthcoming album. One angry protestor was seen with a placard with the inscription “Wizkid drop the already”!

Juice Wrld: US rapper dies aged 21 'after seizure at airport'

2019-12-09T00:39:00.000-08:00

Juice Wrld, real name Jarad Anthony Higgins, was considered to be a rising star of rap music

Juice Wrld, a US rapper who shot to fame on music streaming platforms, has died at the age of 21.

Celebrity news website TMZ said he died after suffering a seizure at Chicago's Midway airport on Sunday morning.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the cause was unknown.

Juice Wrld, real name Jarad Anthony Higgins, was best-known for his viral 2018 hit Lucid Dreams. Mental health, mortality and drug use were common themes in his music.

His record label, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, said Juice Wrld was an "exceptional human being" who "made a profound impact on the world in such a short period of time".

Chicago police told the BBC a 21-year-old man suffered a medical emergency at around 02:00 local time (08:00 GMT) and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Chicago Sun Times there were "no signs of foul play" and it was unclear whether drugs played a role in his death.

Who was Juice Wrld?

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1998, Juice Wrld was raised by his single mother, described as a religious and conservative woman who forbade him from listening to hip hop.

He started rapping in high school, using online music streaming platform SoundCloud to upload and promote his music.

Juice Wrld went on to release his debut full-length EP, 999, on the platform in 2017, garnering him attention from fellow Chicago-based artists such as G Herbo and Lil Bibby.

Juice Wrld shot to fame in 2018, when hit single Lucid Dreams reached number two in the charts

The rapper rose to fame in 2018, when hit singles All Girls Are the Same and Lucid Dreams, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, drew the attention of music fans and record labels.

More plaudits followed the release of his first studio album, Goodbye & Good Riddance, in 2018, cementing him as one of the rising stars of US rap.

In early 2018, he was signed by Interscope Records, landing a record deal reported to be worth more than $3m (£2.2m). He topped the Billboard chart this year with his second album Death Race for Love.

Juice Wrld celebrated his 21st birthday last week

In one of his songs, Juice Wrld rapped about the short lives of artists, saying "all the legends seem to die out".

The song, titled Legends, was dedicated to two late rappers, 20-year-old XXXTentacion and 21-year-old Lil Peep, who died in 2018 and 2017, respectively.

In the song Juice Wrld rapped: "What's the 27 Club? We ain't making it past 21. I been going through paranoia."

Juice Wrld had celebrated his 21st birthday last week. In a tweet, he said it was "one of his best" birthdays yet.

Grime artist Ransom FA spoke to the BBC about the challenges of breaking into the music industry

His music has been described as emo rap, a genre that draws influences from hip hop and alternative rock.

In a four-star review of his second album, music publication NME said the rapper "makes songs that stick, his vocal dissonance capturing what it feels like to be young and in pain, and feeling a sense of indifference towards authority figures".

In a 2018 interview with the New York Times, Juice Wrld opened up about his use of cannabis and Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication.

"I smoke weed, and every now and then I slip up and do something that's poor judgment," he told the paper.

In other interviews, he has been candid about his use of lean, a liquid concoction containing prescription-strength cough syrup and soft drinks. In another of his songs, titled Empty, he references lean, saying it solves problems.

Who has paid tribute?

In a statement, Juice Wrld's record label said he was "a gentle soul whose creativity knew no bounds", adding: "To lose someone so kind and so close to our hearts is devastating."

In a tweet, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding, who collaborated with Juice Wrld on her 2019 single Hate Me, described the rapper as "such a sweet soul" who had "so much further to go".

Chicago-based artist Chance the Rapper paid a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing: "Millions of people, not just in Chicago but around the world are hurting because of this and don't know what to make of it."

"Wow, I cannot believe this. Rip my brother juice world," tweeted fellow rapper Lil Yachty.

US rapper Lil Nas X, also writing on Twitter, said it is "so sad how often this is happening lately to young talented rising artists".

Hip hop artist HaHa Davis wrote on Twitter: "Heartbroken @JuiceWorlddd I love you bro."

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott might be back together as friends notice ‘Nice vibes’

2019-10-22T11:27:00.000-07:00

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott broke up earlier this month but they may already be back together, according to friends who say ‘nothing much has changed’ between them.

Back together like they never split (Picture: FilmMagic)

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star confirmed she had split from the SICKOMODE rapper at the beginning of October after more than two years together.

It appears to have been an amicable split as they’ve been spotted together spending time with their one-year-old daughter Stormi, while Travis has commented on one of Kylie’s Instagram posts.

So it’s no surprise that friends are convinced they’re back together.

A source told E! News: ‘Kylie and Travis are doing very well. Everyone thinks they are [getting] back together or already are.

‘They haven’t made anything official but it doesn’t seem like much has changed. They love being together with Stormi and are happy doing that. Travis has been around the last few days and things are going well. There are very positive vibes between them.

’ Last week, Kylie, 22, and Travis, 28, were seen at a pumpkin patch together with Stormi making for the perfect family outing.

It was the first time the pair had been pictured together since the split and they reportedly plan on meeting up again to spend Halloween with Stormi.

‘They will do something together as a family. All the littlest cousins will be together at some point in their costumes. They will have candy at home and a little party. They also may go to a few houses in their community too,’ the source claimed.

Kylie confirmed their break-up in a series of tweets after it was claimed she had visited her ex-boyfriend Tyga just days after.

The cosmetics mogul said: ‘The internet makes everything 100 times more dramatic than what it really is. There was no “2am date with Tyga”. You see me drop two of my friends off at a studio that he happened to be at.

‘Travis and i are on great terms and our main focus right now is Stormi our friendship and our daughter is priority [sic].

’ Following the split, it was reported that Kylie had asked pals to set her up with a new date as she finds it difficult to meet new men.

She added bride, groom, ribbon and prayer emojis. Chart-topping rapper Minaj, known for hits including Super Bass and Anaconda, said in August she intended to get married within 90 days.

Super model Winnie Harlow was among those congratulating the couple, commenting: “So happy for you Mrs Bride you deserve all the happiness in the world.”

Minaj, 36, and Petty, 41, reportedly started dating last year and became Instagram official in December.

Their relationship proved controversial after it emerged Petty was convicted of attempted rape in 1995 and later spent seven years in prison for manslaughter.

Minaj has previously dated rappers Drake and Meek Mill.

Fans-paid-90-Kylie-Jenner-ex-boyfriend-Tyga-perform-Australia-played-15-minutes

2019-10-21T04:50:00.000-07:00

It's a wrap! Hundreds of fans are left outraged after paying $90 to see Kylie Jenner's ex-boyfriend Tyga perform at a Wollongong pub - only for him to play for 15 minutes before walking out

Hundreds of fans were left outraged after paying up to $90 to see Kylie Jenner's ex-boyfriend Tyga perform live, only for him to play for 15 minutes.

The rapper is currently touring Australia and New Zealand, and stopped off in Wollongong, south of Sydney, for a sold out show on Sunday.

The highly-anticipated event at Towradgi Beach Hotel and Waves sold out weeks in advance.

Hundreds of people are furious after paying up to $90 to see Kylie Jenner's ex-boyfriend and rapper Tyga perform live, only for him to play for 15 minutes

The event kicked off at 6pm while the rapper was expected to go onstage at 11.15pm.

Fans paid up to $90 each for the event but were forced to listen to other DJs for four hours before before Tyga eventually started performing at 11.45pm.

Fans were left outraged and many people felt ripped off.

Emily-Jayne Jackson was furious after the lights turned on and the rapper began to say goodbye to people.

'He started to high-five people before walking off the stage,' the 20-year-old told Daily Mail Australia.

'The lights turned on when he was still performing and I was like what's going on?'

Ms Jackson said as soon as the clock hit midnight police officers walked in as the crowd chanted for him to perform another song.

'Police walked in and then Tyga was high-fiving people and the lights turned on and everyone was ushered out,' Ms Jackson said.

Fans paid up to $90 each for the event but were forced to listen to other DJs for four hours before before Tyga eventually started performing at 11.45pm

Some attendees have demanded refunds, claiming they did not get their money's worth.

'$80 to listen to DJs play the same damn songs for more than four hours and have him only play for like 15 minutes? I want a damn refund,' one woman said.

'The poster only said Tyga, it didn't mention a DJ playing for five hours before hand, otherwise no one would have showed up until 10pm,' another said.

'They made out like it was all going to be Tyga and to only get 15 mins of him, for that price, is f***ed.'

The sub-promoter for the event told Daily Mail Australia that they purchased the show through entertainment agency Lucky Urbn, who had the responsibility of handling the logistics of the show and getting Tyga to the venue.

Other fans have taken to social media demanding refunds from Kylie Jenner's ex-boyfriend (pictured together), with many claiming they did not get their moneys worth

'I’d like to apologise to everyone who came to the show and say that it’s out of our control,' he said.

'I understand people may have felt unhappy or underwhelmed, we did everything to provide a memorable experience and his team let everyone down.'

'Last night’s show is not a representation of how I run by business, and I am appalled this has happened to his hardworking fans.'

Tyga is currently touring New Zealand and Australia, jetting back to New Zealand for a performance at Hip Hop in the Park in Tauranga, New Zealand.

He will then jet back to Australia for a performance at Sydney's Hordern Pavillion on Thursday October 24 and a show on Friday at Melbourne's Margaret Court Arena.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Tyga's representatives for comment.

Stranger Catches An iPhone On A Roller Coaster, Wows The Internet!
Ninjas with reflexes quick as lightning live among us. Well, sort of. New Zealander Samuel Kempf proved to all of us that the human body is amazing. When he was on a roller coaster in Barcelona, Spain, he saw a falling iPhone and he grabbed it as it was hurtling through the air.

Samuel uploaded the video on YouTube and got more than 1.71 million views in less than two days! That’s way more than I could count to. Also, more than 580 people commented on the video, most of them praising the man for his superhuman feat of dexterity.

“I was in Spain at Port Aventura on the Shambhala ride and saw the person a few rows ahead drop their iPhone X. Long story short I caught it. This roller coaster is moving at over 130km/h… was once Europe’s tallest and fastest coaster.. only recently beaten,” Samuel wrote in the description beneath his YouTube video.

How to Remove Hurdles to Writing for Students with ADHD

2019-09-06T09:20:00.000-07:00

Half of all kids with ADHD struggle with writing, which can make every assignment — from straightforward worksheets to full-length essays — feel like torture. Boost your child’s skills with these 18 strategies for school and home.

Studies suggest that more than half of children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD) struggle with writing. These students may have an overflow of creative ideas, but often struggle when it comes to getting these ideas onto paper.

Children with ADHD have a hard time getting started — and following through — on writing assignments because they have difficulty picking essay topics, locating appropriate resources, holding and manipulating information in their memory, organizing and sequencing the material, and getting it down on paper — all before they forget what they wanted to say.

But these hurdles don’t have to stop them from writing. Discuss the following ADHD writing strategies with your child’s teacher so you can work together to ease the difficulties attention deficit children have with writing.

Solutions in the Classroom: Guide the Writing Process

—Set up a note system. Ask the student to write her notes about a topic on individual sticky notes. She can then group the notes together that feature similar ideas so she’ll be able to easily identify the major concepts of the subject from the groupings.

—Start small and build skills. Ask students with ADHD to write a paragraph consisting of only two or three sentences. As their skills improve, the students can start writing several paragraphs at a time.—Demonstrate essay writing. With the use of an overhead projector, write a paragraph or an entire essay in front of the class, explaining what you are doing at each step. Students can assist you by contributing sentences as you go. Students with ADHD are often visual learners, and tend to do better when they see the teacher work on a task.

—Give writing prompts. Students with ADHD usually don’t generate as many essay ideas as their peers. Help the children with ADHD increase their options for essay assignments by collecting materials that s—Explain the editing process. Students with ADHD have a hard time writing to length and often produce essays that are too short and lacking in details. Explain how the use of adjectives and adverbs can enhance their composition. Show them how to use a —Grade limited essay elements. To encourage writing mastery and avoid overwhelming students, grade only one or two elements at any given time. For example, “This week, I’m grading subject-verb agreement in sentences.” Tighter grading focus channels students’ attention to one or two writing concepts at a time.

Solutions at Home
—Encourage journals. Have your child write down his thoughts about outings to the movies, visits with relatives, or trips to museums. Add some fun to the activity by asking your child to e-mail you his thoughts or text-message you from his cell phone.

—Assist with essay topic selection. Children with ADHD have difficulty narrowing down choices and making decisions. Help your student by listening to all of his ideas and writing down three or four of his strongest topics on cards. Next, review the ideas with him and have him eliminate each topic, one by one – until only the winner is left.

—Brainstorm. Once the topic is identified, ask him for all the ideas he thinks might be related to it. Write the ideas on sticky notes, so he can cluster them together into groupings that will later become paragraphs. He can also cut and paste the ideas into a logical sequence on the computer.thesaurus, too.

Timulate choices. Read a poem, tell a story, show pictures in magazines, newspapers, or books.

Solutions in the Classroom: Use Accommodations Where Necessary
—Allow enough time. Students with ADHD, especially those with the inattentive subtype, may take longer to process information and should receive extended time to complete assignments.

—Don’t grade early work. Sensitive students are discouraged by negative feedback as they are developing their writing skills. Wait until the paper is finished before assigning it a grade.

—Don’t deduct points for poor handwriting or bad grammar. Unless an assignment is specifically measuring handwriting and grammar skills, when a child is working hard to remember and communicate, let some things slide.

—Use a graphic organizer. A graphic organizer organizes material visually in order to help with memory recall. Distribute pre-printed blank essay forms that students with ADHD can fill in, so they’ll reserve their efforts for the most important task — writing the essay.
If the student is still struggling to get started, help him by sitting down and talking about the assignment with him. Review his notes from the brainstorming session and ask, “What are some ways you could write the first sentence?” If he doesn’t have an answer, say, “Here’s an idea. How would you write that in your own words?”

—Encourage colorful description. Students with ADHD often have difficulty “dressing up” their written words. Help them add adjectives and use stronger, more active verbs in sentences.

—Stock up on books, movies, games. These materials will introduce new vocabulary words and stimulate thinking. Explore these with your child and ask him questions about them to solicit his views.

—Be your child’s “scribe.” Before your child loses his idea for the great American novel, or for his next English assignment, have him dictate his thoughts to you as you write them out by hand or type them into the computer. As his skills improve over time, he’ll need less of your involvement in this process.

—Go digital. Children with ADHD often write slower than their classmates. Encourage your child to start the writing process on a computer. This way, she’ll keep her work organized and won’t misplace her essay before it’s finished. Also, by working on the computer she can easily rearrange the order of sentences and paragraphs in a second draft.

—Remind your child to proofread. Let your child know that he’ll be able to catch errors if he proofreads his rough draft before handing it in.
