Coca cola And NBC To Go Under Inspection Over Soft Drinks Unfit For Human Consumption

Consumer Protection Council has directed Coca Cola Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian Bottling Company to subject their manufacturing processes to the Council’s inspection for a period of 12 months to ensure compliance with laid down safety standards and regulations or face prosecution.

The directive came as a result of the outcome of a recent investigation by the CPC, which revealed that cans of sprite soft drink manufactured by NBC under the licence of Coca Coca Nigeria Limited, were unfit for human consumption.

The Director General, CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, disclosed this at a press briefing on the ‘Investigation into Violation of Product Quality Standards by the Nigerian Bottling Company and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited’, in Lagos yesterday.

However, in a joint statement signed by Mr.Clem Ugorji Public Affairs & Communications Manager Coca Cola Nigeria Limited and Adeyanju Olomola Head, Public Affairs and Communications, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC) and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited (CCNL) confirmed that the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) recently carried out a product complaint investigation involving both companies in respect of two short filled cans of Sprite.

The statement said that “each organization cooperated with the Council in the course of the investigation and provided the information available to it in varying respects including but not limited to quality assurance, product handling and consumer complaints resolution processes which have been updated over the years. It is regrettable that the Council’s conclusions and recommendations do not appear to have acknowledged the information.

“As responsible organizations, NBC and CCNL take all matters relating to products very seriously and remain committed to maintaining the highest international quality management and food safety standards and certifications. Because consumers are at the heart of everything we do, both organizations also take a responsive approach towards satisfying customers and consumers. Nigerian Bottling Company Limited and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited hold the Council and, indeed, all regulators and stakeholders in high esteem and will continue to work with them to make any necessary improvement.

But the Director General Consumer Protection Council said “The Panel, after five hearings, held between September 2013 and February, 2014 substantiated the allegation of product defect and violation of the Consumer Protection Council Act, though the investigation was premised on two half filled cans of Sprite, it led to a plethora of findings, among which are: that the cans of Sprite are products of the Nigerian Bottling Company under license of Coca Coca Nigeria Limited; that the cans of sprite were defective and had health and safety implications for consumers;

“that Nigerian Bottling Company does not have a detailed written shelf life policy for dealing with expired products; that Nigerian Bottling Company’s grievance resolution policy does not cover instances where the consumer suffers physical injury from consumption, or compensation in instances where Replacement will be inadequate; at Nigerian Bottling Company’s supply chain management does not extend to retailers who the bulk of Nigerian consumers buy their products from; and that Nigerian Bottling Company’s traceability policy fails to’ effectively address the real purpose as the company often relies on information as to the place of purchase of the product. In view of all these, the Council made far reaching recommendations for system change in Nigerian Bottling Company and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited.

“To this effect, it has issued an Order, which gives clear directions for standard compliance in all areas that the companies have been found wanting.

The Order requires Nigerian Bottling Company and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited to: subject their manufacturing process to the Council’s inspection for a period of 12 months to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations; formulate and make available to the Council a Shelf Life Policy within 90 days to facilitate the removal of expired products from the market; review within 90 days their grievance resolution policy to : address compensation for injuries, or compensation in instances where replacement will be inadequate; review their supply chain management policy within 90 days to include retailers in order to minimise the distribution of defective, ‘ non conforming or expired products. review within 90 days their traceability policy to make it easier for the companies to track their products without necessarily requesting purchase information from the consumer.

ANOTHER ATTACK: Several Feared Dead As Gunmen Invade Bama, Borno

It has been reported that gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect attacked Bama, a town 135km from Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

According to Premium Times, the invasion took place in the early hours of Wednesday.

The casualty figure is still unknown.

There has not been yet an official confirmation from the police or the military.

Vanguard has reported earlier today that there was heavy exchange of gunfire between them and security operatives in Bama.

The residents of the state whose relatives in Bama sent distress calls before dawn said the attackers stormed the town at about 4 a.m.‬‬

"Many may have been killed because the attack was launched when the residents were fast asleep," a Maiduguri resident whose relative contacted him from Bama said.‬

On Tuesday, the Presidency stated that the Nigerian armed forces were up to the task of fully containing the Boko Haram "guerrilla warfare".

It also faulted the comments made by Governor of Borno state Kashim Shettima who had said that Boko Haram was better armed that the Nigerian military.

It will also be recalled that one of the latest attack occurred on Saturday when Boko Haram invaded Izghe Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State leaving 146 people dead.

A man got the fright of his life when his car broke down in Canberra and a bogus police officer savagely attacked him, Australia.

Jeremy Marquez, 20, from Lyons drove his shiny Subaru Impreza WRX from Darwin to Canberra where he has moved to study IT at university.

He had only been there a week when he was attacked after driving to friends home late at night.

"The car alarm malfunctioned and shut down the car," he said.

Mr Marquez called the NRMA but almost as soon as he did a random stranger appeared at his window, claiming to be a police officer.

"He said 'get out of the car and hand me your keys and registration papers'," he said.

The man started beating the window, trying to smash it with his fist.

Mr Marquez said that the man didn't have a police uniform on, just a T-shirt and denim shorts.

"He started banging on the window straight away.

It was close to breaking, I thought it would break but it didn't."

Terrified, Mr Mar- quez called the police for help and then told the attacker he'd give him two minutes to run away, and showed him the phone.

But the powerfully-built man kept pounding on the window.

Minutes later three police cars swooped and despite being outnumbered seven to one, the man turned to attack them.

"He ran at the cops and tackled one in the air, and it took two other cops to restrain him," he said.

Mr Marquez said police sprayed his face with capsicum spray but the man kept on attacking them with his eyes closed.

As he tackled the officer his shorts came half off.

"So they ended up spraying on his bum. They sprayed his anus.

They just sprayed it incidentally ... and it stopped him."

Mr Marquez said the capsicum spray on the man's naked bottom seemed to have more effect than when they had sprayed it on the man's face.

A couple who operate a syndicate of buying and selling new born babies at their residence in Urhobo Road, Warri, Delta State are now in police net for allegedly selling a day-old baby girl.

Sources said the Ughelli born midwife, who lives with her husband in her late father’s compound, operates a poorly equipped medicine store which she uses as a base for the inhumane business.

It was further alleged that she does that with the connivance of poor and desperate parents of new born babies and women desperately in need of children.

Luck was said to have ran out on the couple when one of their patients, whose husband was in desperate need of money to buy a tricycle, agreed to sell their new born baby girl without the knowledge of his wife.

As a result, the unsuspecting mother was given a sedative while her new born baby was sold and the money given to her husband.

It was gathered that when she woke up, the woman demanded to see her new born baby girl and was told by her husband that the child died and had been buried.

Suspecting foul play, the mother immediately reported the matter to her relations who stormed the residence of the suspects with some policemen and after serious interrogation by her relations, the midwife was said to have confessed to the crime, saying it had been her stock in trade over the years.

Chinese zoo keepers managed to save the life of a mentally disturbed man after he announced he wanted to improve the lives of caged tigers at a local zoo by offering them his own body to eat.

Yang Jinhai, 27, had posted several online messages about how optimistic he was about starting a new life after getting a job as a security guard in Chengdu in southwest China's Sichuan province.

But he quickly found the job boring and monotonous and moved instead to a job in a printing factory where he also then resigned, saying that he felt there was more to life.

After going to the local zoo he wrote how depressing it was to see the ‘noble and magnificent tigers’ living in such humble surroundings, where they were caged and unable to follow their natural instincts to hunt and kill.

He then announced that he had decided to sacrifice himself in order to provide the Bengal tigers with support.

Eyewitness Feng Lin said: "He climbed up the outside of the cage and jumped inside expecting, I assume, that the tigers would pounce on him.

Instead the two tigers, a male and a female, seemed more nervous than anything else and the female actually ran off."

Rescued: The tiger eventually let Mr Jinhai go and zoo keepers led him to safety

"He then tried to antagonise the tigers by pulling faces at them. Eventually he was attacked by the male where he was cut after being scratched and bitten before he could be rescued by zoo keepers who fired a tranquilliser dart at the male tiger."

They then pulled the man out of the cage. Yang's family told local media Mr Jinhai had been depressed for a long time and said that he had been taken to a home where he was given psychiatric counselling to cope with his problems.

President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that his administration will bequeath to Nigerians, a better Nigeria in all sectors than he met it when he assumed office.

He spoke yesterday at the launching of the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEPED) at Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

According to the President, the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan and the National Enterprise Development Programme will help to fast track the attainment of the goals of ensuring a strong economy and industrial base of the country.

He said the launch of the programmes were “targeted at transforming Nigerian businesses and changing the

lives of the ordinary people. It will accelerate inclusive growth and job creation and save the drain on our reserve caused by importing what we can produce locally.

“The Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan, the National Entreprise Development Programme will also increase the impetus for our national transformation agenda by ushering in a new era of value addition, enterprise development and indusrialisation. I sincerely believe that the Nigerian economy must be developed into one of the most elements of national transformation.

“We have fundamentally reorganised the power sector by privatising 11 distribution and four generating companies and bringing in private sector capital and expertise. We have upgraded faciities within the Nigerian Aviation sector to standards never seen before in this country and we have started rail services that had been dormant for over 20 years.

“Our road network have also received unprecedented attention and improvement in the last three years. It is our expectation that the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan and the National Enterprise Development Programme will be major additions to these landmarks achievements,” the president said.

Describing the NIRP as the “the most ambitious industralisation programme ever pursued by our nation,”President Jonathan said the programme is aimed at accelerating investments in areas where “Nigeria’s comparative and competitive advantages can be better harnessed.”

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Ebonyi State, yesterday, arrested a serial rapist and homosexual, Chibuike Maduka, who allegedly raped four children of different parents at Ndibe in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state.

The man said his mother, Mrs. Idam Augustina Josephine, was responsible for his strange sexual behaviour, as he confessed to have had sexual intercourse with her on several occasions. Now the suspect claims he doesn’t know what usually compel him to have sex with children in the area.

Parading the suspect at the Command headquarters in Abakaliki, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mrs. Ego Echendu, said,

"The suspect confessed to have been having sexual intercourse with the biological mother and we asked to know when it started and he said last year and also claimed that the mother usually encouraged him to sleep with children of tender ages."

Police want to transfer the case to the Ministry of Women Affairs in the state for them to take it from there.

"He sleeps with his own biological mother who is in our custody now; and again he also told us that he is a homosexual, he sleeps with other male friends. From my analysis, I think he has some sought of brain disorder."

According to the information gathered the man started raping young children in 2008.

According to the suspect,

"I’m here because of my mother. She used me for ritual. I don’t know what I’m doing. If I see a little child I will rape her; this act started in 2008; it is not my fault but that of my mother. “I have raped my mother and four children. My father is late. I don’t know myself again."

Meanwhile Maduka's mother denies allegations, insisting that he doesn’t know what was happening to his son.

The race for the vacant position of the Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan hot up on Tuesday with five candidates emerging as leading contenders.

Investigations in Abuja showed that those who had been pencilled in for the post included a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, a former Head of Service to the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye and a former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke.

Others are the Chairman of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. Godknows Igali.

It was also gathered although the President was considering picking the next chief of staff from the South-South, he had not ruled out the possibility of choosing a candidate from the South-West.

Barely 24 hours after Chief Mike Oghiadomhe resigned, the race for his successor became intense on Tuesday.

While a Presidency source said that Jonathan had already zeroed in on Oronsaye before Oghiadomhe’s resignation became public knowledge, another source said Jonathan had not made up his mind on his successor.

The source, who insisted that Oronsaye had been picked, said Jonathan was aware that the news of Oghiadomhe’s exit would naturally attract lobbyists, hence the decision to quickly make up his mind on his successor.

However, an aide of the former head of service, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, said that he was not aware that Oronsaye, who had travelled out of the country, had been contacted by the Presidency.

Meanwhile another Presidency source said,

“I can tell you that the search for the next chief of staff has not been concluded. Although Oronsaye is being mentioned, there are others, who are still being considered. Such people include Dokpesi, Igali and Nwuche.”

It was gathered that some of Jonathan’s confidants were insisting that the post should remain in Edo State. Dokpesi and Oronsaye are from Edo State.

It was, however, learnt that there were others, who felt that the President should shift his attention to other states in the South-South.

Another source said,

“I can also tell you that the President is also considering the South-West that has been complaining of marginalisation.”

MONSTER: Pastor Poured Anointing Oil On Girl's Private Part And Raped 16-Yr-Old To "Cleanse Her From Evil Spirits"

A 16-year-old rape victim on Tuesday told Abuja High Court that the accused pastor poured anointing oil on her and raped her in the name of removing evil spirits inside her.

According to the girl, Basil Princewill of Mountain Mover Fire Ministry Church, Nyanya, in 2012 told her he had a revelation that her foundation was dirty and that her father’s wife was trying to kill her. The pastor reportedly added that Lord told him to perform a quick deliverance on her.

The victim agreed, after which Princewill brought a white handkerchief and a bottle of oil and asked her to remove her clothes.

"He also asked me if I was menstruating and I told him no. He told me that I am possessed with many evil spirits that have stained my blood and it will only take my husband to deliver me and I was not married, he said that he will carry out the cleansing on me," she said.

She further narrated that the pastor led her into his bedroom and asked her to close her eyes, brought his handkerchief and placed it over her head and she became very weak.

She said the accused raped her.

"I cried and begged him to stop but he refused. All I remember is that I fainted and woke up later to see that I was bleeding from my private parts. When he was done, he helped me to wear my clothes and he called Pastor Moses Onuoha and asked him to take me outside and burn the handkerchief," she said.

After everything was over for the girl, Princewill said that "deliverance" would need to be repeated.

"Sometime in December 2012, he sent for me against and told me that the spirits were stubborn and he lured me with alcohol and asked me to go home. After that I discovered that I was pregnant, he took me to Fantanu Head Medical Centre, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, for an abortion."

The terrified victim ran away, but was immediately brought back to the hospital.

"I saw the instruments and I ran out of the hospital (papa) Apostle ran after me and beat me up, saying I want to bring shame to him," she told testified.

She further said that the accused dragged her into the hospital and left a directive that she should not leave the hospital until he comes for her. After the abortion Princewill forbade her to leave the hospital room.

Later the girl's mother took her to the family doctor, who diagnosed that she had a recent abortion.

Baba-Yusuf adjourned the case to Feb. 20, for cross-examination.

EFCC Press Release: EFCC Arraigns Banker For N450 Million Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC, on Tuesday February 11, 2014, arraigned one Akpojiyouwi Grace before Justice Babajide Lawal-Akapo of the Lagos High Court sitting at Ikeja on one count charge bordering on failure to conduct due diligence in financial transactions.

The accused a former employee of Union bank is accused of complicity in the mega scam that rocked the bank early this year when some fraudsters hacked into its data base and pulled out hundreds of millions of naira. Akpojiyouwi allegedly failed to conduct due diligence as the account officer of Dan Kawu Bureau De Change before confirming and authorizing the payment of N450,000,000 (Four Hundred and Fifty Million) to the company.

The charge reads: “Akpojiyouwi Grace on or about the 9th of January, 2013 at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division whilst being an employee of Union Bank Plc failed to exercise due diligence in relation to conduct of financial transactions with one Dan Kawu Bureau De Change by confirming and authorizing payment of the sum of 450,000,000 (Four Hundred and Fifty Million) fraudulently transferred by hacking into Union Bank database (flexcube) and transferring the said sum to Union Bank Plc account of one Dan Kawu Bureau De Change domiciled in Lagos and thereby facilitated the crediting and withdrawal of the said sum by Dan”.

When the charge was read, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Based on the plea of the defendant, the prosecution counsel prayed the court to fix a date for trial and to remand the defendant in prison custody pending trial.

Justice Lawal Akapo adjourned the case to February 19, 2014 for hearing on the bail application and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri maximum prison.

ASUP Strike: Ibadan Polytechnic Students Give Ultimatum

The students of The Polytechnic Ibadan on Tuesday gave the Oyo State government and the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP, a 24-hour ultimatum to resolve their differences and reopen the school or face major student unrest.

The students gave the warning during a peaceful protest staged to condemn the ongoing strike embarked upon by their teachers since October 2013.

Displaying placards with inscriptions criticising the face-off between their lecturers and government, the students marched from the main gate of the campus, through the Sango-UI road and on other major roads within the axis to air their grievances.

Though no major breakdown of law and order was recorded during the protest, the students were accompanied by the Nigerian Police. The protest, however, disrupted vehicular movement for about three hours.

The president of the Students’ Union of the polytechnic, Iyiola Oladimeji, said,

“We can’t continue to tolerate this continuous neglect. They have to resolve whatever is between them and call off this strike. We are tired of staying at home and wasting away. Students are just idling away,” he said.

The action was preemptive of a possibility of extending the protest to Governor’s Office. In his reaction, the state commissioner for Education, Solomon Olaniyonu, blamed the lecturers for the crisis.

“They are not supposed to be on strike. They are not doing what they are supposed to be doing,” he said.

According to him, the government was already looking into the lecturers’ demand and had assured them that the demands would be attended to. However, the chairman of the polytechnic’s chapter of ASUP, Segun Philip, faulted the commissioner’s claim, saying it was the government that had not done what it was supposed to do.

“All our demands have been presented to them and none has been attended to. We have tried all other means to get their attention but they have not worked. So we resolved to embark on that strike since December 2013. There are so many and they have not touched any,” he said.

According to a reliable source, the girl visited the boyfriend identified as Martins at No 46 Old Market Road on the night of Monday, 10th February with the hope of discussing how to spend the Valentine’s Day.

As her beloved was not in the house, she decided to wait and that when he arrived, she queried him to know where he had been. The source further stated that her boyfriend, who was infuriated, attacked her.

Another account, however, stated that Chinonso had first drawn a kitchen knife to attack Martins but was unlucky as he overpowered her, and stabbed her to death.

It has been gathered that the suspect tried to escape from the scene of the murder, but neighbours stopped him.

Mr. Onyechi Ifediora, a resident of Old Market Road, where the suspect lives, who volunteered to speak to the press told DailyPost that the suspect may not have meant to kill his girlfriend as they both love each other.

One of the resident of Old Market Road described the late Chinonso as a beautiful and humble girl who never deserved to die that way.

Local police has confirmed the incident, stressing that the matter has been transferred to state CID, Awka.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday confirmed that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, breached the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007.

The House said the minister breached the Act by failing to attach the details of the budget of the 31 government agencies listed under the law to the 2014 budget currently before the National Assembly.

A six-man advisory committee, which the House set up on Tuesday last week to guide it on whether members should debate the budget or not, laid its report on Tuesday.

The committee noted that Okonjo-Iweala failed to comply with the provision of Section 21(II) of the Act, where she was required to attach the details of the budget of the agencies for consideration by the National Assembly.

Among the agencies, described as “big earners and spenders”, are the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation; Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Port Authority.

The report observed that what the minister attached to the national budget was the “summary” of the budget of the agencies and not the detailed breakdown as required by law.

“As a committee, the documents attached to the budget do not fulfill the requirement of the Act because they contain just the summary. Section 39 of the Act even says a breach of the Act is criminal,” the Chairman of the committee and chairman, House Committee on Rules/Business, Mr. Albert Sam-Tsokwa, told members as he presented the report on Tuesday.

However, the committee further recommended that the budget debate should go on “in national interest” so long as Okonjo-Iweala would have provided the details before the budget was passed.

The committee argued that in spite of the established breach of the Act, the House would not stop the budget debate because it was equally an obligation under Section 81 of the 1999 Constitution for the House to pass the budget of the country.

Sam-Tsokwa spoke further,

“The breach of the Act was by the minister; there was a clear breach and the minister has to properly provide those details in compliance with Section 21 of the Act. It is the conclusion of the committee that the budget debate will go on for national interest while the minister complies with the law.”

Ruling on the report, the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, said the point of order raised by a member of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Emmanuel Jime, was “sustained.”

It was Jime’s point of order that stalled the debate last week, as he had observed that the budget was in breach of the Act. Tambuwal ruled that the report would guide the House as members debated the budget.

The speaker had blamed the rush with which the budget was sent to the National Assembly without the details of the agencies on jostling for political office positions ahead of 2015.

MEND, Okah’s Lawyer Fault Alleged Jailbreak Claims By SA Prison Authorities

Mr. Okah’s lawyer says the alleged jailbreak report was fabricated by the authorities ahead of Mr. Okah’s hearing at the South African Supreme Court of Appeal in March.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, and South African-based lawyer, Idemudia Uriesi, have faulted the report that Henry Okah attempted a jailbreak in that country. Mr. Okah, the leader of MEND, was arrested by the South African Government shortly after Nigeria’s 50th Independence Day Anniversary bombing in Abuja on October, 1 2010.

He was arraigned on charges of international terrorism at the Gauteng High Court; Johannesburg, South Africa. On March 26, 2013, he was found guilty and sentenced to a 24-year jail term at the Newlock Prison, Pretoria. On Monday, the South African prison authorities alleged that Mr. Okah colluded with four other inmates to carry out a jailbreak.

“I can confirm that Okah is one of the five inmates that attempted to escape and whose efforts were foiled,” Manelisi Wolela, spokesman for South Africa’s department of correctional services, had told AFP. But MEND’s spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo and Okah’s lawyer, Mr. Uriesi said the South African authorities lied about the attempted jailbreak.

In separate statements to PREMIUM TIMES, they stated that the alleged jailbreak report was fabricated by the authorities ahead of Mr. Okah’s hearing at the South African Supreme Court of Appeal in March. In a statement signed by Mr. Gbomo, MEND said the alleged jailbreak story is a petty propaganda and a desperate attempt by the South African and Nigerian Governments to scuttle Mr. Okah’s likely victory at the appellate court.

“No right thinking person would believe that the ‘political prisoner’ who was recently granted a leave to appeal his conviction and has a pending lawsuit against the South African Prison Service would connive to escape with common-law prisoners who have nothing to lose.

Henry Okah not only shunned a plea bargain offered by the prosecution for his freedom but opted to go ahead with his trial to clear his name. “He is ready to proceed to the South African Constitutional Court to test the South African judicial system against an obvious setup,” MEND said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Okah’s counsel, Mr. Uriesi in a statement said his client won the leave to appeal both his conviction and sentence in November 28, 2013 and was preparing to appear before the appellate court.

Mr. Iriesi stated, “We meet with Mr. Okah on a weekly basis and can confirm that his current preoccupation is his impending appeal hearing and his ‘other prisoner’s rights.’ “All allegations, insinuations and or rumours of escape or attempted escape by our client from the prison custody are fabrications.

They have no basis in truth or facts; are totally false and consequently, denied. “We and our client have total confidence in the correctness of Mr. Okah’s legal position regarding his appeal against conviction and sentence in the charges and we have no doubt his appeal will be successful.”

However, both MEND and the legal team said they would continue to insist on Mr Okah’s innocence over the attacks for which he was convicted and sentenced by the South African court.

Facebook, which celebrates its 10th anniversary, has 757 million daily active users worldwide. Of those 19% are in the US and Canada, so that's more than 143 million people checking Facebook daily.

The Bible used to be the go-to for statistics about reading, pre-digital age. A 2006 CBS News poll found 15% of US adults read the Bible or other religious texts daily. There are about 267 million adults in the US and Canada. That means about 40 million people reading the Bible daily.

And then there are monthly users - Facebook claims 1.23 billion of them. That's more people than live in any country but China. In fact, Facebook is beyond comparing to nations and is more continental in magnitude. Facebook's monthly user population is larger than six of the seven continents, only behind Asia.

Facebook's monthly user total is about the population of all of North America and Europe combined.
