Reflection:

Today’s readings form a unified spiritual and theological vision. The Christian life is participation in God’s eternal mystery, lived through faithful stewardship, sustained by the springs of salvation, and manifested in the unity of the Body of Christ.

In Ephesians, Paul reveals the mystery once hidden throughout the ages but now made known in Christ: that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same Body, and copartners in the promise of salvation. This revelation is not merely doctrinal; it is cosmic. Paul declares that through the Church, the manifold wisdom of God is made known even to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places.

The Church, therefore, is not merely a human institution. It is a manifestation of God’s eternal plan, a visible sign of a mystery that transcends history and reveals humanity’s ultimate destiny in Christ. The unity of Jew and Gentile is not simply a social arrangement but a revelation of God’s purpose to gather humanity into one Body. What once appeared divided is brought into communion through the grace of Christ.

Paul’s humility is equally significant. He recognizes his unworthiness and acknowledges that his ministry is the result of grace rather than personal merit. The mystery is so great that no one can claim it as an achievement. Grace is a gift, and ministry is participation in God’s work. Paul does not present himself as the source of the message but as a servant entrusted with the privilege of proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Christ.

This challenges us to examine how we understand our own gifts, responsibilities, and spiritual lives. Whatever wisdom, ability, opportunity, or responsibility we possess is not simply something to claim as our own. It is something entrusted to us for a purpose greater than ourselves. Grace does not merely make us feel spiritually uplifted; it invites us to participate in God’s eternal plan through the concrete realities of our lives.

Then the Responsorial Psalm brings this cosmic vision into the interior life of the believer. Isaiah proclaims that God is our strength, our song, and our salvation. We draw water with joy from the springs of salvation because the Holy One is in our midst.

Salvation is not an abstract theological concept. It becomes a lived reality through confidence in God, the renewal of hope, the courage to persevere, and the joy that comes from knowing that we do not face life alone. The springs of salvation remind us that our spiritual lives must continually draw from the source of grace rather than depend exclusively on our own strength.

We cannot faithfully serve others if we continually attempt to operate from interior depletion. We need to return to the source of our strength, allowing God to renew our minds, purify our intentions, and restore our capacity to love. The believer who receives salvation is also called to become a witness to it, making God’s works known among the peoples.

The Church, therefore, is both a manifestation of God’s wisdom and a fountain of salvation. Through her, the mystery of Christ is proclaimed, the faithful are nourished by grace, and the world is invited into communion with God.

The Gospel takes this understanding of grace and brings it into the realm of responsibility. Jesus teaches us to remain vigilant through the image of a householder who must be prepared for the unexpected arrival of a thief. He then speaks of a steward entrusted with the responsibility of caring for the household.

The central issue is not whether the steward can predict the master’s return. It is whether he remains faithful to the responsibility entrusted to him.

Christian vigilance is not anxiety about the future. It is a way of living in the present. We remain awake spiritually by aligning our actions with the will of God, recognizing that our lives are not simply private possessions but entrusted realities.

The faithful steward understands that his position is not an opportunity for domination or self-indulgence. His responsibility is to care for the household, provide what is needed, and serve those entrusted to him. The unfaithful steward, by contrast, abuses his authority, neglects his duties, and behaves as though the master will never return.

This distinction has profound implications for Christian life. The gifts and positions entrusted to us are not intended merely for our personal advancement. They carry responsibilities toward others. Whether in the family, the workplace, the Church, or society, our faithfulness becomes visible in how we treat those who depend on us.

Negligence is therefore more than a failure to complete a task. It can represent a failure to recognize the meaning of the responsibility entrusted to us. When we use our position for selfish purposes, neglect the vulnerable, or abuse the trust of others, we contradict the very purpose for which our gifts were given.

Jesus concludes with a principle that brings the entire message into focus: to whom much is given, much will be required.

This statement is often understood simply as a warning that greater privileges bring greater obligations. But its theological depth goes further. Grace is not merely assistance; it is entrustment. God gives us His Word, His wisdom, His salvation, and the opportunity to participate in His work. These gifts invite a response.

The more we have received, the more we are called to allow those gifts to bear fruit. Greater knowledge calls for greater fidelity. Greater authority calls for greater responsibility. Greater opportunity calls for greater service. Spiritual maturity is not measured merely by what we know, possess, or have experienced, but by how faithfully we respond to what has been entrusted to us.

Responsibility is not simply a burden. It is also a form of dignity. To be entrusted with something meaningful is to be invited into a purpose beyond ourselves. Judgment reveals whether we have embraced that responsibility or turned away from it.

All three readings converge on this truth: the Christian life is a participation in God’s eternal mystery. Paul shows us the mystery revealed through Christ and manifested in the Church. Isaiah shows us the joy and strength that flow from the springs of salvation. Jesus shows us how this grace must become visible through faithful stewardship.

The mystery is proclaimed, salvation is received, and responsibility is exercised. These are not separate dimensions of Christian life but interconnected expressions of one vocation.

Today’s readings invite us to examine our own lives. Are we conscious of the gifts and responsibilities entrusted to us? Do we draw from the springs of salvation, or do we attempt to carry everything through our own strength? Are we spiritually awake, living in a manner consistent with the faith we profess, or have we become complacent because we assume that accountability can always be postponed?

We are called to live as faithful stewards, recognizing that our work, relationships, abilities, and spiritual lives are entrusted realities. We are called to draw continually from the grace of God rather than operate from depletion. We are called to remain vigilant, not through fear, but through a conscious awareness of our identity and vocation in Christ.

Ultimately, Christian vigilance is not merely about being prepared for an unexpected event. It is about becoming the kind of people who are already living in accordance with the Master’s will when He comes.

May our lives reveal the manifold wisdom of God through unity, charity, humility, and fidelity. May we draw joyfully from the springs of salvation and recognize that every gift we receive carries an invitation to serve. And may we remain faithful stewards of the grace entrusted to us, understanding that the One who gives us much also calls us to respond with love.

This is the heart of Christian vigilance: not fear of the thief, but faithful readiness for the Master.

Reflection

The Mass today's readings help us look at two gifts that the Lord has given us. First, the gift of life. When we begin reading the Bible, we see that God is creating. The first teaching we receive is that God created us to have a relationship with Him. In the Book of Genesis, we see God's creation.

In fact, when we got up this morning, the first gift we received from the Lord was a brand-new day.

God gives us life so that we may have a relationship with Him. It is always interesting when we talk about living in the present, because the present itself is a gift. Every day we have is a gift from God. The first thing we must acknowledge is that our very life is a gift God gives us.

The second gift we see in today's readings is the gift of redemption, the gift of salvation. God created us to be in a relationship with Him.

Then we find the story of Adam and Eve in the garden. God tells them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, warning them that they will die if they do. The devil comes onto the scene and asks, “What did God say?” They explain that God told them not to eat from that tree, otherwise they would die. The devil responds, “You are not going to die. You will be just like God.”

To be just like God? That does not sound like a bad proposition. So they ate from the tree, and what God had said came to fruition. Death came upon them.

Because of that original sin, humanity fell into sin and death. What is fascinating is that in the first reading in Genesis, God promises to send a Savior. That is remarkable. God does not need us. He is complete within Himself, but He desires a relationship with us.

God created us for a relationship. We broke that relationship, but God still wanted us to be united with Him. Therefore, God promised to send us a Savior.

We know that God loved the world so much that He sent His only begotten Son. Jesus became a man like us in all things except sin. He paid the price of our salvation by going to the Cross and offering Himself for us. He died, was buried, and on the third day rose bodily from the dead, demonstrating His victory over the powers of sin and death.

As the first reading from Ephesians tells us, our salvation is a gift.

We do not earn it. We do not deserve it. It is a pure gift that God has given us. What we must do is receive that gift.

Think of it this way: the Lord says, “Here is salvation.” We must open our hands to receive it. We can think of those two hands as representing the Lord's commandments: love God and love your neighbor.

By living this way of life, we receive the gift of salvation. Salvation is offered to us because of what Jesus has done. Our response is to accept that gift by living a life of love for God and love for our neighbor.

Let us return to today's Gospel. The man has a great harvest, but what does he do? He says, “I have so much food that my barns are not big enough. I have to build larger barns. Then I can sit, eat, drink, and be merry.”

He is doing the opposite of receiving the gift of salvation. We might think he would be thankful to God for his abundance, but he does not give a single thought to thanking God for his gifts. We might also expect him to share his abundance with those around him who are in need.

Instead, he focuses entirely on himself. He is not living a life of loving God and loving his neighbor. His possessions have become the center of his life, and he fails to recognize that his blessings come from God.

The parable reminds us that material abundance cannot guarantee the future. The rich man has plans for many years, but he does not control the length of his life. His possessions cannot save him, and his wealth cannot secure his eternal destiny.

Jesus calls us to become rich in what matters to God.

When we look at today's Scripture readings, we see that God is abundant in His blessings toward us. It is good for us to pause every day and give thanks to God for the many gifts and blessings we have received: the gift of life and the gift of salvation.

We can respond to these gifts by living according to God's way, loving Him, loving our neighbors, sharing what we have, and remaining faithful as we continue our journey toward the Kingdom.

May we never take the gift of life for granted or become so attached to material possessions that we forget the God who gives us everything. Instead, may our lives reflect gratitude, generosity, faith, and love.

“Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

Reflection

Today’s readings invite us to reflect on who ultimately owns our hearts.

In the Gospel, the Pharisees and Herodians try to trap Jesus with a political question: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” Jesus refuses to be trapped. Holding up the coin, He asks whose image is on it. When they answer, “Caesar’s,” He replies:

“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Matthew 22:21)

Many people interpret this passage as separating faith from everyday life. The meditation challenges that misunderstanding. Jesus is not teaching that religion belongs in church while business, government, healthcare, or public life operate by different moral rules. Rather, He teaches that we have obligations both as citizens and as disciples.

The coin bears Caesar’s image, so it belongs to Caesar. But we bear God’s image. From creation and through Baptism, we belong to God. Therefore, while we honor legitimate civic responsibilities, our ultimate allegiance is to the Lord.

The first reading reinforces this truth. Through the prophet Isaiah, God speaks to Cyrus, a pagan king:

“I am the LORD and there is no other.”

Even Cyrus received his authority from God. Power, influence, leadership, intelligence, and success are gifts entrusted by God. No ruler, nation, employer, or institution stands above Him.

St. Paul, in the second reading, reminds the Thessalonians that their faith is not merely words, but a lived reality marked by faith, love, and enduring hope. Christianity must be visible in everyday actions.

Today’s Gospel asks us to examine our lives. Are we the same Christians at work as we are in church? Do we practice honesty when no one is watching? Do we fulfill our responsibilities faithfully? Does our faith shape how we treat others? Do we recognize that everything we have comes from God?

For those of us in healthcare, we can live this Gospel by treating every patient as someone made in God’s image, serving with integrity even during busy shifts, documenting truthfully and accurately, showing compassion to difficult patients and families, and bringing Christ’s love into every interaction.

In this way, we give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar through faithful professional service, while giving to God what belongs to God through lives rooted in faith and charity.

Reflection

In today's first reading, St. Paul prays that the "eyes of your hearts" may be enlightened so that we may understand the hope to which God has called us. He reminds us that the same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in those who believe.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples not to be afraid to acknowledge Him before others. He promises that the Holy Spirit will help them when they face trials, opposition, or moments when they must defend their faith.

These readings fit beautifully with the memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, an early bishop who courageously professed Christ even while being led to martyrdom. His life reminds us that faith is not merely something we believe privately. It is something we live publicly through our words, actions, and trust in God.

Many of us worry about the future, our health, our families, our work, or the burdens we carry each day. Yet St. Paul calls us to focus on hope. The Lord has already conquered sin and death. The same Christ who reigns above all powers and authorities walks beside us in every challenge we face.

Today, Let's ask God to enlighten our hearts. Pray for the courage to witness to Christ through kindness, patience, honesty, and compassion. We may never face martyrdom like St. Ignatius, but every day presents opportunities to choose Christ over fear, faith over doubt, and hope over discouragement.

Gospel: (Luke 12:1–7)

Reflection

It is one of those Gospels where Jesus gives warning to the Pharisees and even called them hypocrites. They can pretend. But they can pretend for all they care and want, but not for long and not forever. Their hypocrisy will be exposed.

Jesus tells them, “Everything now covered up will be uncovered. And everything now hidden will be made clear. Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. And what you have whispered in hidden places will be proclaimed from the housetops.”

They will be exposed, and their hypocrisy brought to light. We cannot keep secrets with God. He knows us through and through and will expose us. Let us not live double standards, because the shame and disgrace will be ours when we shall finally be exposed, when all our hidden, shady lives in the dark will be brought to daylight.

And this is exactly how some people behave with their friends. They claim to be friends. They relate with you. But later, you discover that truly they were not your friends. Hypocrites! It is only later that you will discover that they were only pretending to be friends. They sugarcoated their words and claimed to like you, but perhaps it was because of the benefits that they had from you as their so called friend. FINO, friend in name only.

Unfortunately, we pretend to human beings and think that we can pretend to God as well. For God, darkness is as bright as the day. Psalm 139:12. So, we cannot hide anything from him.

Let us be open and transparent to God. Tell him, confess to him all our sins without hiding anything, for he knows us. Even if you were to go down into the depths of the grave, God is there. Even if you were to be in the darkest night, God is there. He sees everything. He knows us. We cannot hide from him. We cannot pretend to God, ever.

It is a warning and, at the same time, an exhortation for us and not just the Pharisees in the Bible. There is no need to live a life of double standards. Do not live a pretentious life because we want to win favors.

Let us pray for that grace not to live a pretentious life, a life of a hypocrite. Be honest with God and with others. Be honest with our lives. When we make mistakes, ask God for pardon and strength, rather than pretend to be what we are not.

Reflection:

Today’s readings form a unified spiritual message: authentic discipleship requires interior transformation, not merely external performance. The Christian life is not about appearing holy before others but allowing God to transform the heart so that our thoughts, desires, attitudes, and actions reflect His presence within us.

In his Letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul describes the struggle between the flesh and the Spirit. He is not simply listing individual sins; he is revealing two opposing ways of living. The works of the flesh emerge when our lives become disconnected from God and are governed by disordered desires. They manifest themselves through rivalry, jealousy, uncontrolled impulses, anger, selfish ambition, fractured relationships, spiritual emptiness, and an excessive attachment to pleasure or power. These forces gradually draw us away from communion with God and from the love we are called to share with one another.

Paul’s warning is not merely a condemnation of human weakness. It is also a spiritual diagnosis. When the flesh dominates our decisions, we become increasingly governed by our impulses, wounded pride, resentment, and desire for recognition. We may continue to appear successful, respectable, or even religious, while our interior lives become restless and disordered. We can follow external rules and still remain far from the transformation God desires for us.

In contrast, Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities are not simply virtues we perform to impress others. They are the fruits that emerge as we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us. Love becomes less possessive and more self-giving. Joy becomes less dependent on circumstances. Peace becomes more deeply rooted than the temporary comfort of a trouble-free life. Patience becomes more than the suppression of frustration. Kindness extends beyond the people we naturally prefer. Generosity becomes less calculated, faithfulness less conditional, gentleness no longer mistaken for weakness, and self-control something deeper than mere repression.

The fruit of the Spirit reveals a heart being gradually reordered by God. This transformation does not mean that we never experience temptation, anger, fear, or disappointment. It means that these experiences no longer have to dictate our behavior. Through grace, we learn to respond differently. We become less controlled by our impulses and more capable of choosing what is good, even when doing so is difficult.

Paul concludes by reminding us that if we live in the Spirit, we must also walk in the Spirit. In other words, our interior transformation must become visible in our daily lives. It must influence how we speak, how we treat others, how we respond to conflict, how we use our resources, how we exercise authority, and how we behave when nobody is watching. The Spirit who transforms the heart must also shape our conduct.

The Psalm deepens this message through the image of a tree planted beside flowing water. The righteous person is like a tree that is rooted, nourished, stable, fruitful, and enduring. Such a person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. This meditation is not merely an occasional religious exercise; it is a habitual turning of the heart and mind toward God's truth. The Word of God gradually shapes our understanding, corrects our desires, strengthens our judgment, and teaches us how to live.

A tree does not produce fruit simply because it tries harder. It produces fruit because it is alive, properly rooted, and continually nourished. In the same way, spiritual fruitfulness does not arise from external effort alone. It grows from our relationship with God. When we remain rooted in His Word and open to His grace, our lives gradually begin to reflect the nourishment we receive.

The psalm contrasts the tree with chaff, which the wind drives away. Chaff has no deep roots, no stability, and no lasting substance. It is easily scattered because it is not firmly grounded. Spiritually, this image describes a life that is constantly carried by changing circumstances, public opinion, emotional impulses, and the demands of the world. A person without interior rootedness may appear strong when life is favorable but become easily destabilized when suffering, disappointment, temptation, or uncertainty arrives.

The contrast is not intended to encourage pride or the belief that we are morally superior to others. It calls us to examine the foundation upon which we are building our lives. Are we rooted in God, or are we being carried from one influence to another? Are our decisions shaped by truth, prayer, and wisdom, or are we continually reacting to whatever happens around us? The question is not simply whether we are producing visible results, but whether our lives are being nourished by the right source.

In the Gospel, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scholars of the law because their religious priorities have become distorted. His criticism is not that religious observance, careful attention to the law, or the practice of tithing is inherently wrong. The problem is that external precision has become disconnected from the more fundamental demands of justice, mercy, compassion, humility, and love of God.

They are careful about the smallest details of religious obligation, yet they neglect the deeper responsibilities that should give those obligations their meaning. They focus on appearances, recognition, and compliance while failing to cultivate the interior disposition that authentic worship requires.

Jesus exposes the danger of a religion that becomes more concerned with looking righteous than with becoming righteous. It is possible to observe religious practices while remaining indifferent to another person's suffering. It is possible to speak about God's commandments while treating others unjustly. It is possible to demand holiness from other people while refusing to examine our own hearts.

The image Jesus uses of unseen graves is especially powerful. A grave may appear harmless or even beautiful on the surface, yet conceal death beneath it. In the same way, a person may appear outwardly respectable, disciplined, and religious while harboring pride, bitterness, hypocrisy, or a lack of love within. The exterior may communicate spiritual life while the interior remains unresponsive to God's transforming grace.

This warning applies not only to religious leaders but to all of us. We must be careful not to confuse reputation with character, religious knowledge with wisdom, public devotion with private integrity, or external compliance with genuine conversion. The important question is not simply what others see when they look at us, but what God sees within us.

Jesus also challenges the scholars of the law because they impose burdens on others without being willing to help carry those burdens themselves. This reveals a form of spiritual arrogance in which rules become instruments of control rather than expressions of truth and love. Instead of helping people draw closer to God, religious authority becomes another weight placed upon those who are already struggling.

Authentic discipleship must therefore be accompanied by humility and compassion. We cannot sincerely proclaim the mercy of God while refusing to show mercy. We cannot speak about love while remaining indifferent to injustice. We cannot demand that others carry burdens while refusing to offer them assistance. Truth must be joined to charity, and religious authority must be exercised in a way that serves rather than crushes others.

Taken together, today’s readings reveal a coherent spiritual path. Saint Paul teaches us about interior transformation through the Holy Spirit. Psalm 1 teaches us about the importance of remaining deeply rooted in God's Word. The Alleluia reminds us that discipleship begins with hearing the voice of Christ and continues through following Him. The Gospel warns us against hypocrisy and calls us to unite religious observance with justice, mercy, compassion, and love.

These readings remind us that genuine holiness begins within but cannot remain hidden within. The heart that is transformed by God must eventually express that transformation through our relationships, responsibilities, decisions, and treatment of others. Interior faith and exterior conduct belong together. A life rooted in God should gradually bear the fruit of God's presence.

We must therefore ask ourselves whether we are becoming more loving, more patient, more merciful, more faithful, and more self-controlled. Are we allowing God's Word to shape our judgment? Do we listen to Christ when His teaching challenges our pride or demands that we change? Are our religious practices helping us become more compassionate, or have we become satisfied with appearances? Do we offer others the same patience and mercy that we hope to receive from God?

The goal is not to create an impressive religious image. It is to become people whose lives genuinely reflect the presence of Christ. We may not transform overnight, and we will continue to struggle with weakness and temptation. Yet, through prayer, the Word of God, the sacraments, repentance, and cooperation with the Holy Spirit, we can continue to grow in holiness.

Let us allow our roots to grow deep in God. Let His Word nourish our minds and hearts. Let the Holy Spirit produce genuine fruit in our lives. Let us listen to the voice of Christ and follow Him, not merely when His teaching is convenient, but also when it challenges us to abandon pride, forgive an offense, practice justice, show mercy, or serve someone who cannot repay us.

Above all, let us seek the integrity that Jesus calls us to embrace: a life in which our private character corresponds to our public witness, our religious practices are accompanied by love, and our faith becomes visible through the way we treat others.

Let our roots go deep, let our fruit be genuine, and let our interior lives match our exterior witness. May the Holy Spirit transform what the world cannot see so that, through our words and actions, others may recognize the life of Christ within us.

Reflection:

Several times in the Gospels, Jesus reminds us that what is inside matters more than what is outside. He uses this example about the washing of the cup and how the Pharisee was being critical because Jesus didn't first wash before dinner. Now, we know the importance of being clean and sanitary, but that's not the point here.

He just invited the Son of God into his home. Maybe he didn't recognize him for who he was. But at least he knew that this Jesus from Nazareth was a great preacher, teacher, and miracle worker. This was a holy man! And all he could do was be fixated on the fact that he didn't observe this tradition of washing before sitting down at the table.

Why didn't he notice the good in Jesus, that he had been doing throughout Judea and Galilee? Why didn't he just praise him for being such a great person? Why didn't he just count his blessings for Jesus accepting his invitation to come to his home?

No. He had to be critical and focus on this one little thing. So, what was more important? The fact that Jesus was the Son of God, or that he didn't wash before sitting down at the table?

But let's not be too critical of this Pharisee, because this is exactly how judgmental we can be at times.

We can look at people and say alot about their appearances. We do it all the time. And basically, we should not judge a book by its cover, right? Look at the inside. Look at the inside, the good hearts of people. And good hearts can be found in people of different races, languages, nationalities, cultures, and lifestyles.

How often do we do this?

What does it mean to have clean hands? They should have looked at Jesus, these Pharisees, and said, "He has clean hands, because clean hands are not gained by soap and water."

So, let's learn that lesson from Jesus Christ in our interactions with people. Let's realize that goodness can be found in all sorts of people, no matter how they dress, no matter how they talk, no matter how they walk, whether or not they observe our particular customs of washing our hands.

Look for the good. Jesus always tried to see the good in others. What a shame that this Pharisee couldn't just see the good in Jesus, who was all good, who was the Son of God, come to lead us from darkness into light, from death into life.

Let's not be judgmental. Let's not judge a book by its cover. Let's look inside and recognize always the good.

Oh, I know, the bad can stare us in the face. It's always there. We're not blind.

We should always look for the good in all. Because that should always outweigh any bad.

Reflection:

Today's Gospel presents us with a brief exchange that contains a profound lesson about faith, discipleship, and the meaning of true blessedness.

While Jesus is teaching, a woman from the crowd raises her voice in admiration of His mother: “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Her words express a natural human response. What greater honor could there be than to give birth to the One who speaks with divine wisdom, performs mighty works, and reveals the Kingdom of God?

Yet Jesus responds by directing our attention beyond the physical relationship of motherhood to a deeper spiritual reality: “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

Jesus is not diminishing His mother. On the contrary, He reveals the very foundation of her greatness. Mary is blessed not merely because she carried the Son of God in her womb, but because she received God's word in faith, surrendered herself to His will, and remained faithful to her vocation.

The woman in the crowd recognizes the privilege of being Jesus' mother. Jesus invites everyone to recognize that the blessing of belonging to God's family is offered to all who receive His word and live by it.

This distinction is essential. Christianity is not simply admiration for Jesus, familiarity with religious language, or participation in external religious practices. It is a relationship with God that transforms the whole person. To hear God's word is to allow His truth to enter our minds, challenge our assumptions, purify our desires, and direct our decisions. To observe His word is to translate that truth into a life of obedience, mercy, justice, humility, and love.

We can listen to the Scriptures every day and still refuse to let them change us. We can speak eloquently about forgiveness while holding tightly to resentment. We can profess our belief in human dignity while treating people according to their social status, wealth, education, or usefulness to us. We can pray for peace while feeding the hostility that destroys peace in our homes and communities.

The question, therefore, is not simply whether we have heard the word of God. It is whether the word of God has taken root in us.

Mary: The Model of Faithful Discipleship

The Blessed Virgin Mary provides the clearest example of what Jesus means.

At the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel announces God's plan, Mary does not possess a complete understanding of everything that will follow. She does not receive a detailed explanation of every suffering, uncertainty, or sacrifice that will accompany her vocation. Nevertheless, she responds in faith: “May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Her response is not passive resignation. It is a free and trusting surrender to the will of God. Mary places her life at the service of a divine purpose that exceeds her own understanding.

At Cana, she directs the servants toward her Son with the instruction, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). These words express the essence of authentic Marian devotion. Mary does not draw disciples away from Christ; she directs them toward Him. Her own life teaches us to listen to the Lord and act upon His word.

At the foot of the Cross, Mary remains faithful even when the fulfillment of God's promise appears shrouded in suffering. She does not abandon her Son when His mission leads to humiliation and death. Her discipleship demonstrates that faith is not merely enthusiasm when life is favorable. It is fidelity when the road becomes painful and God's purposes are difficult to understand.

Mary's blessedness, therefore, is inseparable from her faith. She hears, believes, obeys, perseveres, and remains united to her Son.

We are called to imitate that faithfulness. We may not understand everything God permits in our lives, but we can continue to trust Him. We may encounter disappointment, illness, financial hardship, rejection, or the consequences of other people's decisions. We may pray without receiving the answer we desire. Yet the word of God invites us to remain faithful, knowing that our lives are held within a providence greater than our present circumstances.

Faith Makes Us Children of God

The First Reading from Saint Paul's Letter to the Galatians deepens this understanding of Christian identity.

Saint Paul declares that through faith we are children of God in Christ Jesus. Through Baptism, we have been clothed with Christ, and the divisions that separate people in the world do not determine their standing within the family of God.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free person; there is not male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Saint Paul is not claiming that every human distinction disappears or that every person has identical responsibilities. He is proclaiming something more fundamental: no ethnic identity, social position, or human status gives anyone a superior claim to salvation in Christ. All who belong to Christ are heirs according to God's promise.

This has profound implications for how we treat one another.

We cannot claim to belong to Christ while regarding another person as less worthy of dignity because of poverty, nationality, occupation, education, or social standing. We cannot celebrate our own salvation while remaining indifferent to the suffering of others. Nor can we reduce the Church to a community of people who share the same background, interests, or social advantages.

In Christ, we are brought into a family whose foundation is divine grace.

Our identity as God's children is not a reward we earn through social prestige or personal accomplishment. It is a gift received through faith and Baptism. Yet this gift carries a responsibility: we must allow our lives to reflect the One in whom we have been baptized.

To be clothed with Christ means that our conduct must increasingly resemble His. We are called to His humility, His compassion, His courage in speaking the truth, His concern for the forgotten, and His willingness to serve rather than dominate.

Christian equality is not merely a slogan. It must become visible in the way we welcome strangers, care for the sick, defend the vulnerable, forgive those who offend us, and recognize the dignity of people who cannot offer us anything in return.

Hearing the Word Requires Conversion

Jesus' statement also challenges us to examine the difference between religious knowledge and genuine conversion.

Knowledge is important. We must learn the Scriptures, understand the teachings of the Church, and form our consciences according to the truth. But knowledge becomes spiritually fruitful when it shapes our choices.

Consider the parable of the sower in Matthew 13:1–23. The seed is good, but the soil differs. Some seed falls on the path, some on rocky ground, some among thorns, and some on rich soil.

The word of God can encounter similar conditions within us.

At times, our hearts become hardened by pride. At other times, we receive the Gospel enthusiastically but abandon it when following Christ becomes costly. Sometimes our spiritual lives are crowded by anxiety, ambition, resentment, material concerns, or the desire for human approval. The word is heard, but it struggles to bear fruit.

The rich soil represents the heart that receives the word, understands it, and bears fruit.

This is the kind of heart we must ask God to cultivate within us. We need humility to accept correction, patience to persevere, courage to change, and grace to begin again when we fall.

True conversion is not a single emotional moment. It is the continuing work of allowing God to transform our minds and hearts. It means examining our habits, acknowledging our sins, seeking reconciliation, and making concrete changes in how we live.

When the Gospel calls us to forgive, we must begin the difficult work of forgiveness. When it calls us to generosity, we must open our hands. When it calls us to truth, we must abandon deception. When it calls us to love our enemies, we must resist the temptation to allow hatred to determine our conduct.

We will not accomplish this perfectly through our own strength. We need the grace of Christ, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the nourishment of the Eucharist, the healing of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the support of the Christian community.

The purpose of hearing God's word is not merely to become more informed about holiness. It is to become holy through God's grace.

This reflection today reminds us that our lives must express what our lips profess. This calls to mind Jesus' teaching about the final judgment in Matthew 25:31–46, where the Son of Man identifies Himself with the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned.

The decisive question is not whether we possessed religious language, social recognition, or a reputation for goodness. It is whether our lives bore the fruit of love.

We must be careful, however, not to misunderstand this teaching as though salvation were simply a matter of accumulating good deeds. We are saved by the grace of God through Christ, not by placing God in our debt. But the grace that saves us is not fruitless. Living faith expresses itself through love, and the love we receive from God must become visible in our relationships and actions.

We cannot separate our relationship with Christ from our responsibility toward our neighbor. The person who hears the word of God is called to become a doer of that word.

This is particularly important when nobody is watching. It is easy to appear generous when generosity brings praise. It is easy to speak about integrity when honesty costs us nothing. The deeper test comes when doing what is right requires sacrifice, when forgiveness feels undeserved, when serving others interrupts our plans, or when truth threatens our reputation.

These moments reveal whether the Gospel has moved beyond our lips and entered our hearts.

We should not approach the final judgment with presumption, imagining that outward religious observance automatically guarantees holiness. Nor should we despair, as though our failures place us beyond God's mercy. We must live with both seriousness and hope: seriousness because our choices matter, and hope because God's grace continually calls us to repentance and new life.

The goal is that, through Christ's mercy, we may one day hear the words we long for: “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

Today's celebration also invites us to pray for peace: in our hearts, our homes, our families, our Church, our society, and the whole world.

Peace begins with God, but it must take flesh in our daily lives. We cannot pray sincerely for peace while deliberately nurturing contempt, spreading falsehoods, refusing reconciliation, or treating disagreement as a reason to deny another person's dignity.

Peace does not mean indifference to injustice or silence in the face of wrongdoing. Genuine peace rests upon truth, justice, mercy, and the recognition of the dignity of every human person.

Mary, honored by the Church as Queen of Peace, directs us toward Christ, the Prince of Peace. Her example teaches us to trust God's word and cooperate with His grace even when the world around us is troubled.

We should pray for those who have fallen away from the faith, for people suffering from loneliness and isolation, for the sick and those who care for them, for families experiencing division, and for all who have died. But our prayer must also move us to action wherever God gives us the opportunity to serve.

A visit to someone who is isolated, a word of encouragement to someone who has lost hope, a willingness to reconcile with a family member, or an act of compassion toward a stranger can become a concrete expression of the Gospel.

We do not need to perform extraordinary deeds to become faithful disciples. We need to respond faithfully to the opportunities for love that God places before us each day.

The Gospel leaves us with a question that reaches into the deepest part of our Christian lives: Are we merely hearing the word of God, or are we allowing it to transform us?

Mary shows us the way. She receives God's word with faith, surrenders to His will, and remains faithful to her Son. Saint Paul reminds us that through Baptism we have been clothed with Christ and made heirs according to God's promise. Jesus calls us to demonstrate this identity through lives of obedience, mercy, and love.

Let us therefore ask for the grace to become people whose faith is more than words, whose prayer leads to conversion, whose knowledge produces wisdom, and whose love becomes visible in service.

May we welcome God's word into the depths of our hearts. May we allow it to challenge our pride, heal our divisions, purify our intentions, and strengthen our commitment to Christ.

Through the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we learn to hear the word of God and observe it, so that our lives may glorify Christ and help others encounter His saving love.

Reflection

In today's Gospel, Jesus performs a work of liberation by driving out a demon, yet some people accuse Him of acting through Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Others demand a sign from heaven. Instead of recognizing the work of God before their eyes, they question the very source of Christ's authority.

This reveals a profound spiritual danger: the human heart can become so resistant to the truth that it interprets God's work as evil. The problem is no longer a lack of evidence but a refusal to receive what the evidence reveals. When pride, prejudice, and fear govern our judgment, even a work of mercy can become an occasion for accusation.

Jesus responds with a question that exposes the absurdity of their reasoning: if Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? His argument leads to the central proclamation of the Gospel: “But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.”

The expression “the finger of God” points to divine power at work in human history. What Jesus accomplishes is not merely the removal of an affliction. It is a sign that God's reign is breaking into a world wounded by sin, oppression, and spiritual bondage. In Christ, God is not standing at a distance from our misery. He has entered our condition to liberate us and restore us to communion with Himself.

Jesus then describes a strong man guarding his palace. His possessions remain secure until someone stronger comes, overcomes him, removes his armor, and distributes his spoils. The image reveals the true identity of Jesus' mission. He is the stronger one who confronts the powers that hold humanity captive. He does not negotiate with evil as an equal. He comes to overthrow its dominion.

The victory of Christ, however, must not be reduced to a spectacle of supernatural power. The deepest captivity of humanity is our estrangement from God, expressed in sin, disordered desires, pride, hatred, and the refusal to love. Christ comes to rescue us from these chains and restore our freedom to live as children of God.

This brings us to the difficult warning at the end of the Gospel. Jesus speaks of an unclean spirit that leaves a person, only to return and find the house swept clean and put in order. It then brings seven spirits more wicked than itself, and the person's final condition becomes worse than the first.

This warning teaches us that freedom from evil is not complete unless it becomes a life filled with God.

It is possible to abandon a destructive habit without developing the virtue that must replace it. We can remove bitterness without learning forgiveness, abandon dishonesty without embracing truth, and withdraw from sinful behavior without cultivating prayer, humility, and charity. An empty space in the heart does not automatically become a dwelling place for God.

The Christian life, therefore, is not merely a project of removing what is wrong. It is a lifelong transformation through grace. We must allow the Holy Spirit to form Christ within us. Prayer must become a relationship rather than a routine. Repentance must lead to conversion. Knowledge of the Gospel must become obedience to the Gospel.

By virtue of our Baptism, we are all called to be missionaries. This mission is not reserved for priests, religious, or those who travel to distant lands. It belongs to the entire Church. We are called to make Jesus known through the truth of our words, the integrity of our conduct, the patience of our love, and the generosity of our service.

Consider the first disciples. Andrew encountered Jesus and brought his brother Peter to Him. Philip brought Nathanael. The Samaritan woman encountered Christ at the well and returned to her community to tell them about Him. Mary Magdalene announced to the disciples that she had seen the risen Lord.

Their witness demonstrates something essential about evangelization: an encounter with Christ naturally creates a desire to share Him with others. We do not proclaim Christ merely because we have memorized religious teachings. We proclaim Him because we have come to recognize Him as the One who gives meaning to our lives, forgives our sins, heals our wounds, and opens the way to eternal life.

Our mission begins in ordinary circumstances. We can make Christ known through the way we treat our families, care for the sick, serve the vulnerable, speak about those who are absent, and respond to people who cannot repay our kindness. We can proclaim the Gospel without forcing others to listen, because a life shaped by Christ becomes a witness that invites others to encounter Him.

Yet Jesus also confronts us with a decision: “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”

These words challenge the temptation to remain indefinitely neutral about Christ. Faith is not simply admiration for Jesus or agreement with selected teachings. It calls for a personal response expressed through obedience, perseverance, and love. We cannot claim to gather with Christ while deliberately participating in what destroys the dignity of our neighbor or contradicts the truth we profess.

This does not mean that Christians never struggle, fall, or experience doubt. It means that when we fall, we must return to the Lord through repentance and grace. The difference between a heart that is being renewed and one that is becoming hardened is not that the former never sins, but that it continues to surrender to God's transforming mercy.

The First Reading from Galatians deepens this message. Saint Paul reminds us that Abraham was blessed through faith and that, through Jesus Christ, the blessing promised to Abraham extends to the Gentiles. Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Our salvation, therefore, is not something we can manufacture through our own achievements. We cannot place God in our debt or purchase His grace by accumulating good deeds. We are redeemed through the saving work of Christ, and we receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Genuine faith, in turn, transforms how we live. Good works do not replace grace; they become its fruit in a life surrendered to God.

The Cross stands at the center of this mystery. Christ enters the depths of our fallen condition and bears the curse so that we may receive the blessing. The One who is stronger than the powers of evil conquers not through hatred but through the self-giving love of God. His Resurrection reveals that sin and death do not have the final word.

Let us ask ourselves: Is my heart merely swept clean, or is it being filled with the presence of God? Am I satisfied with avoiding wrongdoing, or am I actively growing in holiness? Do my words and actions draw people toward Christ, or do they create obstacles to the Gospel?

The Lord calls us to more than an outward appearance of goodness. He calls us to conversion of heart, a living faith, and a love that bears fruit in service.

Know Christ. Love Christ. Serve Christ. Bring others to Christ.

May the Holy Spirit dwell within us, strengthen us against evil, and form us into faithful disciples. May our lives become living testimonies to the truth that the Kingdom of God has come upon us in Jesus Christ.

Reflection:

Prayer is not about persuading God to care. God already loves us completely. Persistent prayer deepens our trust and helps us align our hearts with His will. Sometimes the answer comes quickly; sometimes it comes through patience and growth. God's greatest gift is always His presence through the Holy Spirit.

That is why the central message of today's readings is the relationship between faith, prayer, and the Holy Spirit.

Faith

St. Paul teaches that the Christian life begins and grows through faith.

"The righteous one shall live by faith." (Romans 1:17)

Faith is a gift received at Baptism and nourished throughout life.

Prayer

Jesus teaches persistence in prayer.

"Pray without ceasing." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Prayer strengthens our relationship with God just as communication strengthens human relationships. Through prayer, we learn to trust that God hears us and knows what we need.

The Holy Spirit

The Father responds to our prayers by giving us the Holy Spirit.

"The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything." (John 14:26)

The Spirit grants wisdom, courage, peace, and strength for daily Christian living.

The Eucharist

The Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life.

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever." (John 6:51)

Through Holy Communion, Christ nourishes us so that we can be His presence in the world.

Faith

"For we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Reflection:

Today, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, sometimes called Victory and the Church places before us two profoundly connected realities: the necessity of prayer and the necessity of living the Gospel we pray.

The disciples do not ask Jesus, “Lord, teach us how to preach.” They do not first ask, “Lord, teach us how to perform miracles.” They ask something much more fundamental:

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

That request reveals something essential about Christianity. Prayer is not an accessory to the Christian life. Prayer is not something we do only when we have problems. Prayer is not simply an emergency telephone call to God. Prayer is the relationship through which our entire Christian life is ordered toward God.

Jesus responds by giving them the Our Father.

“Father, hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us. And do not subject us to the final test.”

The prayer begins not with ourselves, but with God.

Father.

Before we ask for bread, forgiveness, protection, or anything else, Jesus teaches us to recognize whom we are addressing. God is Father. His name is holy. His Kingdom is what we desire. His will, rather than ours, is the ultimate good.

Only then do we ask for our daily bread.

And that word daily is important.

Jesus does not teach us to demand from God a complete map of our future. He teaches us to receive today's grace. Give us this day what we need. Give us the strength for today. Give us the grace for today's struggle. Give us the bread that sustains our bodies and, ultimately, the Bread of Life that sustains our souls.

Then comes forgiveness.

“Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us.”

Prayer cannot remain merely words on our lips. The prayer we speak must become the life we live.

This is where the first reading becomes particularly important.

Saint Paul confronts Saint Peter because Peter's behavior was no longer consistent with the truth of the Gospel. Peter knew the Gospel. Peter had preached the Gospel. Peter had received extraordinary grace. Yet his actions, influenced by fear of others, were contradicting what he professed.

That should make us examine ourselves.

It is possible to pray the Rosary and still harbor resentment.

It is possible to recite the Our Father while refusing to forgive.

It is also possible to kneel in church and then behave differently when we leave.

It is possible to have religious practices without allowing those practices to transform our hearts.

The purpose of prayer is not simply to increase the number of prayers we have said. The purpose of prayer is to unite us to God so profoundly that our lives begin to conform to what we pray.

This is precisely why the Rosary is so powerful when prayed properly.

The Rosary is not magic.

It is not a charm.

It is not something we wear around our neck as though the beads themselves possess supernatural power. The beads are not a talisman. The Rosary is a prayer.

And at the center of the Rosary is not Mary apart from Christ.

Christ is at the center.

The Hail Mary itself is profoundly biblical. The opening words come from the Archangel Gabriel's greeting to Mary:

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”

The next portion comes from Elizabeth:

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

And the prayer directs us toward Jesus:

“Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.”

When we pray the Rosary, therefore, we repeatedly place the name of Jesus upon our lips while contemplating the mysteries of his life.

We contemplate his Incarnation.

His Passion.

His Death.

His Resurrection.

His Ascension.

The coming of the Holy Spirit.

And the glory to which he calls his people.

Mary's role is to lead us more deeply into the mystery of her Son.

That is why the Rosary should never become a mechanical repetition disconnected from the Gospel. We are not simply counting Hail Marys. We are contemplating Christ with Mary.

The Rosary trains the Christian heart to remain with Jesus.

And perhaps that is one reason daily prayer is so necessary.

We live in a world of extraordinary noise. There is constant information, constant entertainment, constant stimulation, constant opinion. We can spend an entire day hearing the voices of other people and almost no time listening to God.

Prayer interrupts that noise.

The Rosary gives us a rhythm.

The repetition of the Hail Mary quiets the mind and directs our attention toward Christ. The mysteries give our meditation a biblical foundation. The decades become a school of discipleship.

We learn from the Joyful Mysteries that God enters ordinary human life.

We learn from the Sorrowful Mysteries that suffering does not mean God has abandoned us.

We learn from the Glorious Mysteries that death does not have the final word.

And we learn from the Luminous Mysteries that Christ is the Light of the world.

The Rosary therefore becomes more than a prayer we say.

It becomes a way of seeing.

We begin to see our own lives through the mysteries of Christ.

When we suffer, we remember Christ in his Passion.

When we experience joy, we remember his Resurrection.

When we feel uncertain about the future, we remember that God is leading history toward his Kingdom.

When we encounter temptation, we remember that grace is stronger than sin.

When we experience death, we remember that Christ has conquered death.

The Church's tradition of the Rosary developed over centuries, but its spiritual heart is remarkably simple: pray, contemplate, and remain with Christ.

And October gives us a beautiful opportunity to renew this practice.

But we should not make the mistake of praying the Rosary only because it is October.

Make it a habit beyond a month.

Not because God needs to hear a certain number of prayers from us before he will love us.

He already loves us.

We pray because we need God.

We pray because our hearts become disordered when they are separated from him.

We pray because we forget.

We pray because we become distracted.

We pray because we become anxious.

We pray because we become proud.

We pray because we need to return again and again to the truth that God is Father and that our lives belong to him.

And Mary teaches us how to do this.

At Cana, Mary says, “Do whatever he tells you.”

That is essentially the entire Christian life.

Listen to Jesus. Trust Jesus. Do what Jesus says.

The Rosary should therefore lead us not merely to finish five decades but to become more obedient to Christ.

If we pray, “forgive us our sins,” we must become people who forgive.

If we pray, “your Kingdom come,” we must allow God's Kingdom to govern our lives.

If we pray, “give us this day our daily bread,” we must learn dependence upon God rather than imagining that we are completely self-sufficient.

If we pray, “do not subject us to the final test,” we must take temptation seriously and seek God's grace when we are weak.

And if we pray, “Father,” then we must live as children who trust their Father.

Today, then, let us not simply ask whether we own a Rosary.

Let us ask whether we actually pray it.

Let us not merely wear the beads.

Let us use them.

Let us not treat the Rosary as a decoration.

Let us make it a school of prayer.

And let us not merely say prayers with our lips.

Let us allow those prayers to become visible in the way we live.

Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, lead us to your Son.

Teach us to pray as he taught us to pray.

Teach us to treasure the Word of God.

Teach us to remain faithful when we suffer.

Teach us to repent when we sin.

Teach us to forgive when we are wounded.

Teach us to trust when we cannot see what lies ahead.

And above all, teach us to say with our lives what we say with our lips:

Father, hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done.

Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us.

Our Lady of Victory, pray for us 🙏

Reflection:

The encounter between Jesus, Martha, and Mary is one of those Gospel passages that can be uncomfortable precisely because it is so familiar. Many of us recognize ourselves in Martha. We are so busy. We are serving. We are carrying responsibilities. We are trying to make sure everything gets done. And sometimes, when we look around, it can seem as though someone else is simply sitting there while we do all the work.

But Jesus does something very important here: He does not condemn Martha's service.

Martha is not doing something evil. She welcomes Jesus into her home. She serves him. She works for him. Her service is good. Her problem is not that she serves; her problem is that her service has become burdened by anxiety.

Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.”

Mary has chosen the “better part.”

The distinction is profound. Martha gives something to Jesus. Mary first receives something from Jesus.

And that is the heart of Christian discipleship.

We naturally think that our relationship with God is primarily about what we do for him: how much we pray, how much we serve, how much we sacrifice, how much we accomplish, how much we give. All of those things matter. But Christianity begins somewhere deeper.

Before we do anything for God, God has already done something for us.

Before we love him, he loves us.

Before we serve him, he gives himself to us.

Before we offer ourselves to him, he offers himself to us.

This is why Mary's posture is so important. She sits at the feet of Jesus and listens. She receives his word. She allows herself to be loved and taught before rushing out to accomplish something.

And that is difficult for many of us.

Sometimes we have become so accustomed to being useful that we forget how to simply receive. We may even feel uncomfortable allowing another person to care for us. We think, “I don't want to be a burden. I don't want someone to have to serve me. I should be the one doing something.”

But love does not merely give. Love also receives.

If we cannot receive love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness, our service can eventually become anxious, resentful, or self-centered. We may continue doing good things, but inwardly we begin keeping score: I am doing all this. Why isn't anyone helping me? Why doesn't anyone appreciate me?

Martha's anxiety reveals what happens when service becomes disconnected from communion with Christ.

Jesus is therefore not telling Martha to stop serving. He is teaching her where her service must begin.

Receive first. Serve second.

That principle reaches all the way into the sacramental life of the Church.

We come to the Eucharist not primarily to demonstrate what we can do for God. We come because God gives himself to us. At the altar, Christ gives us his Body and Blood. He nourishes us with his own life. He forgives, transforms, strengthens, and sends us forth.

Our Christian service should flow from that encounter.

We do not serve in order to make God love us.

We serve because God has already loved us.

The first reading gives us another extraordinary example of this reality. Saint Paul describes the person he once was: a persecutor of the Church, someone who tried to destroy the very faith he would later proclaim.

Yet God called him.

The man who once persecuted the Church became one of its greatest Apostles.

That is grace.

Paul's life reminds us that God does not simply take people who are already perfect and put them to work. God transforms sinners and makes them instruments of his grace.

Then the Responsorial Psalm says:

“You have probed me, and you know me.”

God knows us more deeply than we know ourselves. He knows our activity, our anxiety, our wounds, our ambitions, our fears, our failures, and our desires. He knows the person we have been and the person he is calling us to become.

That is why we do not have to spend our lives proving ourselves to God.

He already knows us.

And more importantly, he still calls us.

Mary sits at the feet of Jesus because she understands, at least in this moment, that the most important thing is not what she can accomplish for him but what she can receive from him.

Eventually, however, Mary will have to rise from those feet.

And Martha will have to continue serving.

The Christian life needs both contemplation and action, receiving and giving, prayer and service.

But the order matters.

We receive Christ so that we can give Christ.

We allow his grace to enter us so that his mercy can pass through us to others.

We allow him to heal us so that we can become instruments of healing.

We allow him to love us so that we can learn to love others.

This is why Jesus says that Mary has chosen the better part. She has chosen the one thing from which everything else must flow: Christ himself.

So perhaps the question for us today is not simply, “Am I serving enough?”

Perhaps the deeper question is:

Am I allowing myself to be served by Christ?

Am I making room to sit at his feet?

Am I listening to his Word?

Am I receiving his mercy?

Am I allowing the Eucharist to nourish me?

Am I permitting God to love me before I rush out to prove my worth through activity?

Because if we forget this, even good things can become burdens.

But when we begin with Christ, our service changes.

We no longer serve because we are anxious.

We serve because we are grateful.

We no longer serve because we need recognition.

We serve because we have received love.

We no longer serve because we are trying to earn something from God.

For there is indeed only one thing necessary.

Jesus Christ himself.

Reflection:

“Who is my neighbor?”

The answer depends on who you ask.

A dictionary definition will tell us that a neighbor is someone who lives next door or near. But Jesus said whoever is in need is our neighbor.

In today’s parable, the Samaritan helped a man who was in need, whereas the priest and the Levite did not. The reason why the priest and the Levite did not help the injured man was due to fear of ritual impurity and fear of danger. They chose religious rules over human compassion.

The Samaritan, on the other hand, helped the injured man because he felt deep compassion for him.

He chose to act as a true neighbor, regardless of the animosity that existed between Samaritans and the Jewish people.

Loving someone and showing compassion requires taking a risk, opening oneself up to vulnerability.

When do we feel most vulnerable?

I find it difficult revealing the sources of my insecurities, pains, and fears to someone. Showing our wounds or our weakness to someone can be one of the most humbling things we can do. And it can make us feel very vulnerable.

The word vulnerability comes from the Latin vulnerare, which means to wound, injure, or harm.

When we are wounded, we instinctively cover up our wounds.

The only people we will show our wounds to are people we trust absolutely and they are very few if any.

Children would run to their mom and dad, show them their wounds, and cry.

Another person to whom we would reveal our wounds is a trusted medical professional, who can treat us and help us heal.

Jesus is our Divine Physician, who is capable of healing all of our wounds.

Often, instead of revealing and entrusting our wounds to Christ, we cover them up.

Instead of running to God, we may run to self-soothing behaviors and turn to our addictions.

I think we need to remind ourselves daily that Jesus willingly chose to suffer for us.

And the wounds that He suffered for us became the source of our healing.

In the words of the prophet Isaiah:

“He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. Upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his wounds we are healed.”

When Jesus appeared to His disciples after He rose from the dead, He still had His scars.

I am sure that one of the first things the disciples noticed were His scars.

There doubting Thomas said:

“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails, and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

So when Jesus returned, Jesus revealed His wounds and asked Thomas to touch them and see that it was Him.

Through those scars, Thomas’ doubt was healed, and he returned to faith.

Jesus did not hide His wounds.

He revealed them.

The wounds that appeared to be signs of defeat became signs of victory.

The scars became witnesses to the love that had been poured out for humanity.

May we all be good neighbors to all in need.

St. Francis of Assisi: Rebuild My Church

Today at Mass, the priest reminded us of something striking: St. Francis of Assisi is almost never celebrated on a Sunday, yet today the Church made an exception. That alone is a quiet sign of how important his witness remains for our time.

Most people remember St. Francis for his love of animals and nature, but that is only the surface. Before he loved creation, he loved Christ crucified. His tenderness toward creatures flowed from a much deeper conversion, a heart seized by Jesus Christ.

Francis was born into a wealthy merchant family in Assisi. His life was comfortable, admired, and full of prospects. But one day, while praying before the crucifix in the small, deteriorating church of San Damiano, he heard Christ speak to him: “Francis, go and repair my Church, which, as you see, is falling into ruin.”

At first, Francis understood these words literally. He found a dilapidated little church and physically rebuilt it, stone by stone, using his own money and even begging for materials. But the deeper meaning of Christ’s call extended far beyond walls and roofs. The Lord was calling Francis to become an instrument of renewal within His Church, to help restore what had become wounded, neglected, and spiritually weakened.

Eight hundred years ago, the Church faced serious challenges: moral failures, abuses of power, worldly ambition, and spiritual lukewarmness. Francis did not respond by placing himself above the Church or by abandoning her. He responded through radical conversion and fidelity to Christ.

He renounced his inheritance and surrendered the security and privileges of his former life. In a dramatic public act before the Bishop of Assisi, Francis stripped himself of his earthly possessions and even returned the clothes that belonged to his father. He embraced a life of radical poverty, declaring that from that moment forward he had only “Our Father who is in heaven.”

From that poverty, God raised up a giant of faith.

Millions have come closer to Christ because of St. Francis, through his simplicity, his love for the poor, his humility, his fidelity to the Church, and his burning love for Jesus Christ, especially Christ crucified and Christ present in the Eucharist.

That is what it truly means to “rebuild His Church.” It is not merely about repairing buildings. It is about allowing Christ to rebuild hearts, families, communities, and the credibility of Christian witness in the world.

And this is where the life of St. Francis speaks so powerfully to our own age.

We live in a time of scandal, confusion, division, materialism, and wounded trust. It can be tempting to respond with anger, to point outward, condemn others, or demand that everyone else change. But Francis reminds us that authentic renewal begins much closer to home.

It begins with conversion.

Before asking Christ to rebuild His Church through others, we must allow Him to rebuild us. Before demanding holiness from the Church, we must ask whether Christ is making us holy. Before condemning the darkness around us, we must allow the light of Christ to expose and heal the darkness within our own hearts.

Francis did not rebuild the Church by becoming powerful. He rebuilt through poverty, humility, obedience, love, and complete surrender to Christ. He became small so that Christ could become great in him.

And perhaps that is one of the great lessons of St. Francis for the Church today: Christ does not need us to save His Church. He asks us to let Him save us and then to become instruments of His grace.

The Church belongs to Christ. She is His Body. And when she is wounded, the answer is not to abandon Christ or His Church, but to return more deeply to the One who founded her.

St. Francis understood this.

He looked upon the crucified Christ, heard the Lord's call, and gave Him everything.

Today, the same Christ calls us.

“Rebuild my Church.”

Perhaps He is not first asking us to rebuild something outside ourselves.

Perhaps He is asking us to let Him rebuild our hearts.

St. Francis of Assisi, lover of Christ poor and crucified, faithful son of the Church, intercede for us. Teach us to love Jesus more deeply, to embrace humility and conversion, to serve the poor, to remain faithful to His Church, and to let Christ rebuild His Church beginning with our own hearts.

Reflection

Today's readings ask a simple but piercing question:

What fruit is my life producing?

In Isaiah's vineyard song, God lovingly prepares everything necessary for growth. He clears the ground, plants choice vines, builds protection, and provides every opportunity for success. Yet the vineyard yields wild grapes instead of good fruit.

The message is not only for ancient Israel. God has also provided us with countless blessings: faith, family, opportunities, talents, sacraments, and daily mercies. The Lord patiently cultivates our hearts. The question is whether our lives produce the fruits He seeks:

Love instead of bitterness
Mercy instead of judgment
Faith instead of fear
Justice instead of selfishness
Gratitude instead of complaint.

In the Gospel, Jesus expands the vineyard image. The tenants act as if the vineyard belongs to them and reject the servants and son sent by the owner. [bible.usccb.org]

How often do we do the same? We can treat God's gifts as our possessions rather than His. We can ignore His voice when it challenges our comfort. Yet God continually sends His Son to call us back.

The second reading provides the remedy. Instead of anxiety, bring everything to God in prayer. Instead of dwelling on fear, focus on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. Then the peace of God will guard our hearts. [bible.usccb.org]

Breakthroughs often begin not when circumstances change, but when our hearts return to the Gardener.

Thank You, Lord, for planting me in Your vineyard and caring for me with such patience and love. Forgive me for the times I have failed to bear good fruit. Remove whatever prevents me from growing closer to You.

Teach me to trust You instead of giving in to anxiety. Fill my mind and heart with what is true, good, and holy. May my life produce the fruits of faith, love, mercy, obedience, and gratitude.

Lord Jesus, the rejected Stone who became the Cornerstone, build my life upon You. Let everything I do today give glory to Your Holy Mighty name.

Reflection:

The seventy-two disciples return filled with joy after their mission. Jesus reminds them that the greatest blessing is not their success or power, but their relationship with God. True joy comes from belonging to Him (God). Like the disciples, we may face struggles and opposition, yet God gives us victory when we place our trust in Him.

From the first reading, God transforms suffering into blessing, fear into joy, and trials into testimony for Job.

Job suffered immensely yet remained faithful. The disciples encountered challenges yet returned rejoicing. Both readings reveal the same truth: What God begins, He completes. When prayers seem delayed, when burdens feel heavy, or when life appears unfair, God asks us to trust His timing. Our crosses can become ladders that bring us closer to Him.

Reflection:

The Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is not merely a sentimental reminder that an unseen being is watching over us. It points toward something much deeper: the mystery of divine providence and the way God chooses to govern and care for His creation.

The guardian angel stands at the intersection of heaven and earth, between God's providential care and our human freedom.

In Exodus 23, God does not merely send a helper. He sends an angel who carries His authority, His judgment, and His mission. The angel is not God, yet God speaks of His authority residing in the angel.

God says:

“My authority resides in him.”

“He will not forgive your sin.”

“If you heed his voice… I will be an enemy to your enemies.”

This reveals a profound truth: God's governance is mediated.

God chooses to involve pure spirits in His providential care of humanity.

Our guardian angels, therefore, is not simply a sentimental religious idea. He is a delegated instrument of divine providence, a personal envoy of God's care assigned to accompany our lives.

Psalm 91 tells us:

“The Lord has put angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.”

Notice that the angel guards you in your ways.

The angel does not eliminate your journey.

The angel does not eliminate your freedom.

The angel protects you as you walk.

This is part of the mystery of divine providence: God can guide without destroying human freedom.

Angels protect without overriding our ability to choose. They guide, illuminate, warn, and assist, but they do not turn us into machines.

Your guardian angel therefore stands at the mysterious meeting point between divine providence and human freedom.

The Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels ultimately directs our eyes beyond the angel to the God who sends the angel.

The angel is not the destination.

God is.

And the angel's ministry is to help lead us there.

Reflection:

The question put before Jesus by the disciples is deceptively simple:

“Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

They are asking a question about rank, importance, recognition, and position. They want to know who stands highest in God's kingdom. But Jesus does something startling. He does not identify a powerful person, a scholar, a religious authority, a successful leader, or someone whose accomplishments are widely known.

He calls a child.

He places the child in their midst.

And then He says:

“Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

This is not a command to become childish. It is a command to become childlike before God.

The distinction is profound.

Childishness can mean selfishness, impulsiveness, and dependence upon one's own desires. But the child Jesus places before the disciples represents something entirely different: humility, receptivity, trust, dependence, and the willingness to receive rather than to dominate.

The kingdom of God cannot be conquered by human ambition.

It must be received.

The Christian life therefore does not begin with our achievement. It begins with God's grace.

We do not climb our way into God's love.

We receive it.

We do not make ourselves worthy of being loved by God.

We discover that we are already being pursued by divine love.

The great temptation of the spiritual life is to think that holiness must always look extraordinary. We imagine that becoming holy requires some enormous sacrifice, some dramatic mission, some heroic public accomplishment that everyone will recognize.

A small act of patience can become an act of charity.

A hidden sacrifice can become an offering to God.

Forgiving someone who has hurt us can become an act of holiness.

Doing our work faithfully when nobody notices can become prayer.

Accepting an inconvenience without resentment can become an act of love.

Remaining faithful when we receive no recognition can become an offering.

The little thing becomes great when it is filled with love.

This is precisely why the Gospel's language of becoming little is so demanding. It attacks our desire to be noticed.

We want to be first.

Jesus asks us to become humble.

We want recognition.

Jesus teaches us hidden faithfulness.

We want control.

Jesus asks us to trust.

We want to know that our efforts will succeed.

Jesus asks us to remain faithful even when we cannot see the outcome.

God reveals Himself as the One who comforts His children.

That image tells us something essential about Christian spirituality.

Before we become workers for God, we must become children of God.

Before we can give, we must learn to receive.

Before we can carry others, we must allow God to carry us.

Before we can become strong for everyone else, we must acknowledge our own dependence upon Him.

This is not weakness.

It is the beginning of supernatural strength.

The world often teaches us that dependence is weakness and self-sufficiency is strength.

Not because we understand everything.

The child does not understand or possess everything.

The child receives.

The child trusts.

The child knows that life depends upon another.

And Jesus tells us that this is precisely the disposition necessary for entrance into the kingdom.

There is another important dimension to this Gospel.

Jesus says:

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.”

The little ones matter to God.

The unnoticed matter to God.

The weak matter to God.

The forgotten matter to God.

The person who receives little recognition matters to God.

The person whose contribution seems insignificant matters to God.

The person who feels invisible is not invisible to God.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful lessons of Saint Thérèse whose feast day is today.

Her life was short.

She did not travel the world.

She did not establish a vast institution.

She did not accomplish what the world would normally classify as greatness.

Yet the Church recognizes her as a Doctor of the Church because her hidden life revealed something enormous about the nature of Christian holiness.

She teaches us the science of love.

And the science is simple, but it is not easy:

God loves us first.

We receive that love.

We trust that love.

We allow that love to transform us.

And then we give that love away.

This changes the way we should look at today.

Perhaps today God is not asking us to accomplish something spectacular.

Perhaps He is asking us to love the person directly in front of us.

Perhaps He is asking us to be patient.

Perhaps He is asking us to forgive.

Perhaps He is asking us to stop seeking recognition.

Perhaps He is asking us to perform some ordinary duty faithfully.

Perhaps He is asking us to surrender an anxiety that we have been carrying.

Perhaps He is asking us simply to trust Him.

The kingdom of heaven is not built merely through spectacular moments.

It is built through countless hidden acts of love.

Thérèse understood this.

St. Thérèse, pray for us.

Reflection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is on the road to Jerusalem with His disciples. They know that Jerusalem is not merely another destination. It is the place where suffering, rejection, and ultimately the Cross await Him. Just before this passage, Jesus had already told His disciples that “the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” The journey to Jerusalem is a journey toward sacrifice.

As people approach Jesus and express a desire to follow Him, He challenges them to understand what true discipleship requires. In essence, He is saying: “Before you follow me, count the cost. Count the cost and then come and follow me.” There is always a cost to being a disciple of Christ. Following the Lord is not simply a matter of convenience or emotion. It requires commitment, sacrifice, and perseverance.

Yet why do we continue to say, “Yes, Lord, I will follow You”? We do so because of the promise He has made to us: “I am with you always, until the end of the age.” This is our hope. This is our confidence. We never walk alone. The same Jesus who calls us also accompanies us.

Still, the Christian life is not without challenges. There are trials, sacrifices, disappointments, and even persecutions. Yet the response of the faithful remains the same: “I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back. No turning back.” Whatever the difficulty, whatever the cost, Christ remains worthy of our trust and our fidelity.

In the Gospel, Jesus encounters three different people, and through them He reveals three great obstacles to discipleship. The first man represents our attachment to comfort and security. We want to follow Christ, but we also want guarantees and a comfortable life. The second man represents attachment to earthly obligations and personal plans. We want to follow Christ, but only after we have taken care of everything else. The third man represents attachment to the past. We want to follow Christ, but our hearts continue to look back at what we are being called to leave behind.

These three people are not merely figures from a Gospel story. They represent the struggle within every human heart. We all want Christ, but we also want comfort. We want Christ, but after we finish our own plans. We want Christ, but we still find ourselves glancing backward toward old attachments, old habits, and old securities.

Jesus teaches us that half-hearted discipleship is not enough. The Kingdom of God demands a whole heart, a complete surrender, and a steadfast gaze fixed on Him. The disciple who continually looks back cannot move forward with confidence in the path God has prepared.

And yet, amid this demanding call, there is immense consolation. Jesus does not ask us to walk this road alone. He remains with us until the end of time. He strengthens us when we are weak, forgives us when we fail, and encourages us when the journey becomes difficult.

Therefore, let us renew our commitment today. Let us follow Christ without excuses, without delay, and without looking back. Trusting in His presence and anchored in His promise, may we continue forward with courage, faith, and hope.

Jesus is with us until the end of time.
