Time has past with such speed since I last posted, and many changes have occurred.
My grand-daughter was married last July. The wedding was beautiful,because she is beautiful.

Then very sadly, my son Eddie,Edward, who was living in Austria had passed away.I had not seen him in many years. But we did have the opportunity to talk via Skype for the last 3 years.

As if life refused to come to a peaceful, healing rest, the youngest son whom I've lived with since 2007, accepted a new place of employment that took us all the way from Warren, Ohio to Colchester, CT. But the move did not take place in one giant leap. The house in Warren sold in two days, and we had 30 days to move out.
My son came to CT. to begin his new position, my daughter-in-law followed shortly after and they moved in with my son's in-laws. I moved in with my oldest daughter in Hiram, OH.

In the meanwhile, I had supervised all the packing of my paintings that would be moved and kept in storage till my son and daughter-in-law found another house in CT.
My beloved silk scarves I decided to take with me to Hiram. OH. And I am glad I did, because while biding my time there, I sold a silk scarf!!

My son and wife finally found a lovely home in Colchester, CT. They came to get me, the end of June. The place is quite large. I have all my silk dyes, along with the wooden frames I use to hook the blank silk scarves to, and dye.

Then I sold the lovely yellow hand designed panda silk scarf after I arrived in CT.

I have not created any new hand designed silk scarves. I guess I am still settling into my new place. However, I am working on a painting of hummingbird mother and her brand new brood.

Also, in between the changes in my life, I received the news the other day, that my Marine grandson, Zack-man(my endearing name for him) has been promoted to Corporal.
I often think of some of the words from this song taken from

Beautiful Things Come In Small Packages(The House Wren)

She's small but mighty! And yes, her color is a drab brown, the wren is not as sprightly colored as some other birds, but oh, this little powerhouse has captured not only my heart but scads of time just listening to, and watching her.
    I first encountered this tiny super-bird many years ago. My daughter and I were sitting in the backyard by the picnic table. She stopped our conversation and asked me, nodding her head in the direction of a bluebird house and said," What kind of bird is that Mom? She seems so smart?" At the time I had no idea what specie of bird this was,but she was busy working at fitting a long twig into the bird house. She tried it length wise, finding this did not work, then she turned it sideways and fed it through the tiny hole without another hitch. " And people tend to think that they are the only ones with intelligence." I replied.
       This little brown bird with a perky uplifted tail caught my attention and I spent the rest of the summer trying to determine the species and to learn more about her. I observed her(him really) finish the nest and then sound the news that she was looking for a mate. Using a high pitched incessant chirping I noticed many interested parties showing.    Interestingly, the birdhouse was situated next to where I parked my car in the driveway. I'd pull in
and park about a foot away from the house. The wren would pop out of the hole, give a few scolding chirps, then flip her trail up at me, and re-enter the nest in the birdhouse.. Once she got used to our set up, she would pop out see that it was me and then she'd go about her business.

   It wasn't till the middle of the summer that I learned she was a wren. If you don't mind , I like to refer to the wren as a she, even though I read years later , that the male finds the nest and sets it up. He then courts the female wrens in the area until the right lady looks the nest over and approves and moves in. Take a breath. Then when he mates with her, he fly's off to another nest and mates with another female. So this hunk of male bird can have many off-spring. But, he also seems to find the energy and time to help feed his off spring and protect the nest.
    I watched in mid to late summer, the baby birds perch at the hole in the birdhouse, while mother, father, and seemingly uncles and aunts in the area would perch on the branches outside of the birdhouse and chirp encouragingly to the fledglings. Sometimes if they were ready they'd fly to a nearby branch,when they were not yet ready, they'd shiver at the doorway and turn back to the safety of the nest.
   I did not realize that wrens were very possessive of their original home sites until one day late in April and after a chickadee had set up housekeeping, the wren returned and returned with a vengeance! The wren popped into the birdhouse, then came out to the opening with eggshell pieces in her beak. She basically spit it out onto the ground,went back in and repeated the process until the house was empty of the chickadee's eggs. She then flew off gathering dry grass and refurbished the nest to her/his liking. In the meantime I watched as the chickadee returned, popped into the hole then came out and sat in the opening with what I perceived to be a sad bewildered look on her face. Soon the tenacious wren returned and scolded the chickadee away;I was amazed and a bit sad for the chickadee.
   I moved to my son's home in "2006". I sorely missed the wren. My daughter-in-law bought a wren house and hung it in a tree by the side of the driveway where I now park my car. Last spring '2012' a wren visited the house but evidently found it not suitable and set up nesting somewhere else.
" What do you think is wrong with the house?"asked my daughter-in-law. I had given this a lot of thought. " I think if you turn the house facing our front porch and driveway, next spring we'll have a 'wrenter'.
   Spring of 2013 rolled around, and I listened with anticipation: I heard nothing. No sound of the vibrant incessant chirping of a wren. Then one day my daughter-in-law ran into the house and with an excited voice announced, "She's back!"

I went outside , and yup, there she was gathering twigs and chirping as she went about her/his work--- So turning the birdhouse around to face our porch was the right thing to do.
   Every late afternoon this summer we went outside, sat on the porch swing watching her coming and going gathering insects. I loved listening to her bubbling chirping. Think I'm crazy if you must, but I would call to her when I sat on the porch, and soon she'd fly out of her house right to a bush in front of the porch,she'd cock her head give me a look then fly off to find more insects for the babies.
    Talk about a tenacious bird. One day while standing by the kitchen window watching a chipmunk make his way up a bird-feeder to perch himself near and partake of a suet block, she flew from her house to dive bomb him till he scampered down and skittered away.

   About the third week in August she had raised her second clutch of babies. I went outside to call to her in the late afternoon, but heard and saw nothing. I walked up close to the birdhouse and noticed a twig placed crossways in the open hole of the birdhouse. She had left for the winter and blocked the entrance with a twig: Apparently she plans on returning come next spring.And I will sigh, welcome back the House Wren.

Always saying, " This is the last time!"``by MysticSilks

Each time I finish creating a series of silk scarves,I swear by the powers that be,that "This is the last time!" I'm getting too old for this 'stuff'." Then something happens; some idea pops into my head,or someone asks me if I could create an image on a silk scarf and I'm at it again.

    This time around,a customer asked me if I could create another silk scarf with the astrological image of a 'Pisces':That's the fish sign for those of you who may have never heard of the signs of the Zodiac. "What Pisces scarf are you talking about?"I asked her. For the life of me, I could not recall ever creating one. Well,she sent me a photo of the scarf I had indeed created way back when.I wrote back to her and told her that I had not hand designed any more of those scarves.
   You guessed it. All of a sudden I got the bright idea of creating not one silk scarf with the astrological sign, but biting of a huge chunk of a labor of love(i.e., work) and hand designing all twelve of the signs.
May I add at this point, that I would agree with statement that all artists are a bit 'crazy','nuts',' not rowing with both oars in the water'. And, that is because when we get an idea for a new creation, we loose thought of all the labor intensive work that it entails. It's like childbirth,we forget the hours of pain we were in with the last birth, and go for the gusto again!
    I began to search online for stencils of the signs of the Zodiac. I found a set of 6 online. The description stated that the signs were six inches. Wrong! I discovered after ordering from the UK,to add insult to injury,that one stencil had six signs, that stencil was six inches!! They had to send me two with six signs on each, costing double postage(airmail). You can imagine my dismay when I opened each package and finding that each sign was only 3 inches!! I contacted them,(that's when I discovered the stencils came from London). Sure they'd let me return them. Cost me $12.00 for S&H,they wouldn't send me a return label,plus a $2.50 international charge on my credit card!! Thanks for allowing me to vent and verbalize my frustration. I guess I am still not that internet savvy when buying things on the internet.
             OK, deep breath. God is good! I continued my search and blessed be, I happened upon a site that had the exact size stencils I needed, and more blessing abounded, they offered the observer(me) to download the stencils and use them! I downloaded all twelve. Then I laminated each one, to protect it from whatever I splashed, poured, or wrote on them!

          I also did research on the colors for each astrological sign, then ordered the dyes,and blank silk scarves. I alerted the family that certain areas of the house would be a bit disarrayed til I finished. It always bothers my son when he finds my long straight pins on the floor. I don't do it intentionally,really.
   I said to myself,"Klaire, you're going to practice staying in the present moment,just like the Eckhart Tolle book"A New Earth" advises.You are not going to give a thought on how much work you have taken on, and how long you will be at this, till you complete not six scarves,as I usually do, but twelve! And, that's how I reached the completion of this series of twelve silk astrological signs of the Zodiac!!

Semper Fidelis`Semper Fi``Always Faithful

Do you believe in destiny:The sense or feeling that a life has been fated for what their purpose in life will be even before they arrived in this world? I do.

Zach, my grandson,was always challenging life,even at the tender age of 3..His Mom, my daughter, would call me from Georgia to catch me up on how the family was doing and what Zach's newest adventure was.

"I don't understand the boy, "His Mom would say,"today I found him standing on a red fire ant hill. Those ants were crawling up his legs biting the heck out of him and he just stood there.I finally ran out to drag him off the hill." Another time I was chatting with her, and she related that Zach,now around 6years old, had climbed the neighbor's cyclone fence, had tumbled over. When she went searching for him, she found him with a huge Akita guard dog standing over him. Those dogs are noted as guard dogs and not fond of strangers. My hair was growing grayer after hearing some of her stories.

I must have collected those stories and tucked them away for later in Zach's life,and when his family had moved back to Ohio, when at the age 22 he had made up his mind that he was joining the United States Marine Corps. I was a bit taken back by his decision. "Why not join the Navy,the Air force,? How about the Coast Guard? Marine boot camp is very tough to get through."

"I know,"he replied decisively. He had met a fella at the local health club, and Zach discovered that this fella was going to join the Marines. He did a lot of internet research, talked to a Marine recruiter, and began hanging out with a bunch of guys that were going in.

The recruiter worked with Zach, coaching him on the physical requirements that it would take to make it through boot camp on Parris Island. He worked out every day, began to curb his appetite of fast foods,and to include healthy foods. He came over 2-3 times a week to swim in his Uncle's pool, building his breathing endurance. I would get in the pool to keep him company, and we'd talk about how tough and demanding his drill instructors would be. I said,"Zach,"you're going to handle the stuff they are going to put you through by knowing they're going to try and break you down both physically, but more so psychologically. It's head-game stuff Zach." "I know,"Zach replied.

It all came back to me,Zach's early beginnings; his confronting fearful things with an equanimity which surpassed his young age;like he had purpose behind what we considered painful experiences.I consoled his worried Mom. " He's made this decision. You know damn well, there is nothing you could ever talk him into or out of once he's made up his mind. Recall all the things he purposefully got into when he was young." She finally agreed the Marines were for Zach, and Zach was for the Marines! I did understand what Kim felt as a Mom. I went through those same feelings of separation when my youngest son, William went to the Coast Guard Academy in New London Conn. I was so sad, that after returning home, I had his sister Kim put his clothes in his bedroom. I just couldn't bring myself to deal with the huge void. God, the things that Mom's go through!

On October 22,2012 Zach at age 22 years left for Parris Island boot camp. He flew from Cleveland to Savannah Georgia and was bused the remainer of the way. No drill instructors were on the bus, and he states, the ride was quiet;no one was chatting it up. Just thinking,just wondering what they had gotten themselves into. When at 1AM they finally arrived, he felt dead tired--he had not really slept well for 48 hours. And for awhile it was all down hill.
When the bus pulled beyond the gates of Parris Island to the unloading area, a drill instructor boarded the bus. He laid out the rules. " Button your shirts to the neck! Tuck your shirts in your pants! No talking! You answer with a Yes Sir, No sir! Do you understand?" YES SIR, came the new recruits reply.
They were told to all line up with their feet placed in the painted yellow footsteps of previous Marines from ages and wars ago. Those are honor footsteps a symbol of other young men who had joined the Marines, who had fought and given their lives for this country,The United States of America. Then Zach told me they were given the "Welcome to Parris Island"speech. After they were told to call their parent/s ,tell them they had made it safely:That was the last call, the last time they would hear from home till 13 weeks, and a different and changed man had come to pass..

I asked Zach after he had graduated and was back home for a 10 day leave, what his most difficult experience was. "Being neat and orderly,making my 'rack'/ bed precisely the way the Drll Instructors had ordered us to. wanted it done all at a fast pace. I was never concerned as to whether I'd pass all the physical regimes they demanded of us;the pull ups, the sit ups;carrying 100lbs of gear on a long hike. That never worried me,it was keeping my'rack' and living area perfect and up to snuff."
"Had you ever given a thought to quitting,or giving up?"
"Yea," he lowered his head,"but that was after the 1st 2 days. I was so tired physically and emotionally. But I never , nor did anyone else give voice to how they felt after those first few days. We just kept on keeping on."

His platoon, won the Honor's Platoon Medal for passing with excellence all requirements of the Marine boot camp. Zach is proud of that.
"What was your most memorable experience Zach?"
"Well,"He looked thoughtfully at me,"Besides the graduation, I'd have to say passing the 'crucible'. The crucible," he went on,^{" is a rigorous 54 hour exercise encompassing everything a recruit has learned in the 13 weeks of training. There are no cooked meals served. We ate MRE's(meals ready to eat)or boxed meals. We had walked 40 miles,our feet were blistered and sore. We had no sleep. But we kept each other's moral and spirits up. We kept going knowing that when we made it through this last test, that we really had made it!}

We hiked back and were told to line up in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial where we then received the Marine emblem;the Eagle,the globe,and anchor. Then we went to the mess hall and were given "the warrior's meal"which consisted of almost anything you'd love to eat, and we had plenty of time to eat, too. There was no wolfing this meal down!!"

The second most memorable event was, of course, when I saw my family on graduation day.
I saw the proud smiles on their faces. Uncle Bill and Aunt TJ, drove my Mom and sister to Parris Island to attend my graduation!

This photo was taken at Uncle Bill's and Aunt TJ's home after Sunday church. That's Sasha,their Akita dog. Sasha doesn't give her affections easily and in some cases with people not at all. But she loves her Zach man!
Zach wanted me to add, that he appreciated everything his drill instructors taught him---They were fair, and they cared about the new recruits.

I may just punk out and spend the day on a Robin Cook marathon CD day--I am enthralled and totally addicted to his captivating stories:Think I should call Dr. Phil for help? Maybe he'll send me to one of his camps for people with addictive behaviors---I would not mind as long as i can listen to robin Cook CD's stories;but that would defeat the purpose of going to therapy,huh?

A Treasure From Long Ago`by MysticSilks

A few week ago, I was sorting through an old box of memorabilia looking for photos that I had tossed into the box with the future goal of putting them into albums. I did get the new albums and began the long process of sorting and organizing.

As I was sorting I came upon a canvas folded in fourths;a hell of a thing to do to a painted canvas I thought. I began to unfold it carefully, and discovered it was a paint-by-number. I looked at the signatures and date listed at the right bottom side of the canvas.There was my name, my brother's, and last my Mother's with the date of 7/19/1953.

1953: Fifty- nine years old ! The painting was a street scene in Paris. From the style of clothing , I am guessing maybe from the early 1940's.

I sat holding that painted canvas, and the years melted away back to that hot summer of 1953.
I think my brother and I had been bored with staying inside due to the extreme heat of that summer. We had a nice finished basement, that was at least ten to fifteen degrees cooler than the upper part of the house: In those days, the early 50's, air-conditioned houses were only a dream of the future.
Mom went out shopping one day, and as always I was helping to put away the groceries that she purchased. I noticed a long package wrapped in brown paper at the end of the table.

" What's that , Mom,?" I asked. " Never mind. You just finish with your chores then I'll show you." I could feel the excitement growing inside me. The country was still rebounding from the depression, and people held that poorness inside them, so that seldom were the times during those days, that nice surprises occurred.

I completed my chores, then Mom grabbed the package and headed for the downstairs, she said,
" Follow me." I ran after her following her down the stairs careful not to run her over in my enthusiasm to see what that package held.
She placed the package on the table and removed the box from inside. I saw the title " Paris in the Summer" written on the box, and under it, paint-by-number.

Mom opened the box removed the canvas and on it were what seemed liked thousand of little numbers inside blank images. Sometimes certain numbers repeated themselves , and there were some that had maybe a few numbers that were duplicated. I was confused and backed away from the table.
   " Where are you going ?" Mom asked. " You know numbers and me don't' get along well, Mom."
" Oh, get back here you goofus ." She scolded with a hint of laughter in her voice. " You do not have to add them or subtract them. See these small cups with paint inside? See the number marked above them? You simply use the numbered paint in the same number marked on the canvas."
I heaved a huge sigh of relief and moved close to the table again.

" Sit down here beside me. And I'll start you off and show you how to do this." I moved in closer than a hug, but not so close as to bump her arm: This was serious work, I thought.

The kit came with oil paints, a small bottle of turpentine, two paint brushes with very fine bristles, and about a dozen toothpicks.

" What are the toothpicks for?"
"Watch, I'll show you. When you open the oil paints, see the oil floating on top of the paint. You use the toothpick to gently stir and blend the oil into the paint."

I watched as she stirred the small blue cup of paint.
Then she said, " You must do this every time you begin to paint. And you must remember to use the same toothpick in the same color that you first use it in."
Then she picked up the brush, looked for the number that matched on the canvas and began to paint it in with the corn-flower blue. I was mesmerized!

" Now, after you finish using that color. See this bottle, she picked up the bottle of turpentine. You dip the brush in and clean the color off. Here's a rag to use to make sure the brush comes clean.
You do this each time you start a new color.Understand? " I nodded.

   Mom, got up from the chair and motioned for me to sit in her place. I sat down shaking with excitement. I gazed at the canvas, then back at the oil colors. " I like the red." I turned to look for her approval. " Then use it," she replied. I opened the lid on the small cup, and carefully stirred the oil into the red paint. I picked up the brush, ever so gently dipping just the tip into the paint, then began to apply the paint to the corresponding number on the canvas.
Some where in my cloud of joy, I heard Mom climbing back up the stairs. How long I worked on the painting that day, I don't remember. Maybe, till I heard Mom call me to help set the dinner table.
My brother Jim's name is on that painting. I think he wondered what was keeping me so occupied downstairs and wonder down to ease his curiosity. He might have asked me, if he could try to paint some. I, feeling quite possessive, must have given him the very strictest of instructions, and hovered close by to make sure he followed them. I'm not sure he   felt the same excitement that I had, because he soon left the table, and I can't recall him coming back to paint again.

Also, because so many years have passed, I can't remember how long it took to finish the painting. I know I relished each new painted image as it appeared. And when the scene was completed maybe a month or so later, I remember Mom saying that I had done a fine job. " And when it dries, Sis, it will be yours."
Some how through all these years it sat there in that box. I asked my son, what he thought I should do with it? " Well, for sure , don't leave it folded up in a box. get it mounted."

A week later I found myself in an art gallery, and for the cost of $75.00, much , much more than the original paint-by-number kit had cost, I had it done.

Mother's Day Plantings~ Mysticsilks

On Mother's Day we celebrated by purchasing flats of flowers and planting them in the garden pots around the house.
The first four photos are of the garden pots in the backyard.
We planted Inpatients, sunshine yellow pansies, petunias,and various other plants we thought would add beauty to the yard.
Now, the nice thing about these plants are, they will last far into the summer and fall s long as I remember to pinch back the dead ones.
I feel like it is truly spring after I get the flowers in their summer urns!

Six New Silk Satin Neck Scarves~By MysticSilks

I finally finished those 6 new silk scarves, and posted them in my etsy shop.
It's the first time I tried designing on a 15x72 inch silk satin.
To begin with that's a lot of area to cover with designs, and to dye the background:Getting in and out of the designs with specific dye colors is a challenge, then to keep up with dying the background before the areas already covered dry.
Then there's the photographing. Trying to get the entire scarf into the photo is another challenge. So in essence one could say this is an intense labor of love--:)

Creating Wearable Art on Silk~ By Mysticsilks

I tell myself after creating each new series of silk scarves, that this is my last one. But then the creative muses stir within me and I am back to designing new pieces.
With the six new scarves, there are two that are quite different in size. Instead of the usual 12x 60inch silk satin I decided to try working with the 15 x 70 inch silk satin: And what a challenge that presented.

First I had to alter the size of the wood frame: I extended it in length by a foot. And I discovered with the larger size scarves, you can not connect two together on the frame to dye. The reason, with the extra width, it is difficult to do detailed work, such as seen in the Ocean scene silk scarf.
I am showing the photos of the beginning steps to both the Butterflies scarf(which is shown after it is completely dyed, and the Ocean scene beginnings and after it is half completed with dyes.
I will continue to photograph the progress of the remaining four scarves from the first stages of designing, to the dying process.
Then after steaming all six to set the dyes deep into the fibers of the silk, I will show the finished product in the next blog.

Seeing 'Red' ~ by Mysticsilks

My daughter needed to get rid of her worn out van with its 130,000 miles of traveling rough roads. I had a PT Cruiser which I had only cruised up to ,4000 plus miles--in other words , it was hardly broken in. However I have a back that allows for only adjustable comfort seats, and that PT did not have it.
My son wanted to know why I wanted the PT Cruiser in the 1st place. I told him it reminded me of my Uncle Andy's car from the mid 40's;nostalgia and nothing more had a hand in purchasing that car.

Now, let it be known before we go on with this story, I HATE to buy cars. I think it is one of the biggest wastes on money that there is. In that you lose $3,000 the minute you sign your name and drive off the car lot! And that car salesmen are trained to double talk you, place 'reel them in ads' with prices and deals you can't ignore, only to tell you that the ad expired,or that car was a basic( a basic what I wonder?) Anyway you're not going to buy that car that was in the ad for $15,599---just not happening.
In fact the salesman told me after I mentioned the ad, "what ad"? I replied, I had just seen in in this last weeks paper. Well, he couldn't remember, and it was then I knew we were all in for the long haul of negotiations:Hours, and days of negotiations.

I went home after the 1st day and mixed an energy drink. Next day I went in, and again told him the price I wanted to pay;in fact I found the ad with the 'bargain price, and showed it to him.
"Hmmm,", was his response and he promptly left me sitting in my chair for the hundredth time to go yadda, yadda with his sales manager, and to show him the ad.
I think after the 101th time of this 'go ask the sales manager' I finally said, " Why don't you have the sales-manager come to this table ,and the three of us can hammer out the details?"
He simply chuckled and went again to confer with his sales manager.

In the meanwhile my grandson and I looked at colors of the vehicle I was interested in.
I thought maybe a silver, or grey, or even a crystal blue color.
" Na," Zach offers, " your too alive gram for those pale colors why don't you get the deep cherry red.?"
You're right Zach, why not get a lively color, I thought. And that's just what I did.
Now, to add the finishing touches to this buying of a new car, my son came in to do a bit of man-to-man negotiations with the sales-manager.
An additional bumper to bumper extended 5 year warranty was requested. The sale-manager agreed.

Next ,they were going to put out a search for the car that I wanted and would call me when it came in.
Next day I got the call, and went in to buy the car, do the paper work while they were detailing the car( washing, vacuuming the inside, and full wax job). I took a walk back to the service area , and it was a beauty!
Went back to the finance manager , he was processing the paper work while we joked back and forth. Soon we were done, I took the keys , the paper work and headed home.
A bit later after the dealership closed I took apart the paper work to gather the info I would need for car insurance. I noticed on the documents , that it stated I had purchased a blue Dodge Avenger.
I grabbed the paper work and went out to the living room to show my son.
" Did I buy the wrong car Bill?" I showed him the papers. He laughed. " No, you bought a deep cherry red Chrysler 200: Better call them in the morning."

I called them next morning and told them I was coming in to get my Avenger,which thoroughly confused the sales-manager until I told him what transpired.
So we got the paper work straightened out. The finance manager said, it was an 'honest mistake'.
I said it was OK, but not really. If I had been stopped by the police the night I brought the car home, and he had asked for my registration paper, I would have given him the blue Avenger registration. I am sure he would have said," follow me lady we're headed for the station so you can explain this."
I shudder to think of what could have happened.
OK, it's a beauty, I call her " Red"
But, I HATE buying new cars.

OK, back to topic of kite flying.

Sometimes I have to do something other than design silk scarves, and I've been saying that soon I wanted to get outside in this incredibly great weather
( can't ever remember a March with May/June like temps). Well, yesterday there was a nice stiff breeze blowing. Several days back I had brought my kite upstairs and set it beside the desk to remind me to keep the promise to myself.
I picked up my kite and headed outside.

The ground was saturated with the last few days and nights of rain, so it wasn't feeling solid, nor stable beneath my feet. The winds were fickle with on and off again gusts of wind. The kite would sail up then head nose down toward earth. My son and grandson were outside playing basketball, and must have noticed I was having a challenge on my hands. " Need help, ?", my son asked.
"Yea, sure," I replied. He spent about twenty minutes with the kite sailing up and nose diving. Finally he suggested we go up to the high-school baseball field, where it was more open to the winds.
My grandson went downstairs and brought up another kite, and more string.

I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story. It had been seven years I had held a kite string and sailed a kite;It was fun!

Granny Goofs, and You Gain! ~By MysticSilks

It's been awhile since I've blogged about anything. I usually like to have something new, and or different to share with folks: This blog is definitely about the new and different !
About a month ago I ordered some blank scarves to design and dye. I ordered the 30x30 inch size thinking this would make for a most versatile silk scarf, as one could arrange or rearrange the material to suit what best appeals to them,i.e; wrap about the head and neck,or tie just around the neck;at any rate there's the length and width of material to play with.
As my hands are not as steady as they once were,I find it too much of a challenge to draw an image onto the silk scarves. Yet, I did not want to simply run dye across the scarves and call it a done deal. So, my daughter and I went out one of the last chilly snowy days for 6 hours looking for stencils(appealing stencils);we found not one thing meeting the criteria for appealing.

I was quite disappointed, and my back ached from all that walking. I decided to try amazon.com for stencils. In my search I found four books of all kinds of images, from zoo animals, to horses,flowers, butterflies, fish:I apprehensively ordered the books of stencils, not knowing exactly their size, nor quality.
Well, when they arrived I could hardly believe my good fortune;they were the right size for using on a silk scarf, plus the quality was excellent!
Humph, I thought to myself, and I spent 6 hours looking in the stores and malls. The theme" Let your fingers do the walking " went humming through my mind.

I washed any silk worm residue from the eight scarves, rinsed then ironed them.
I then tacked the scarves to a foam core board. Previous to that I had traced the selected images on tracing paper which I would place under the silk scarf to use as a pattern. I placed these traced images under the silk on the foam-core board, then began to use tinted resists to draw the images onto the silk. As I worked I was chatting with my grand-daughter who was home on spring break from medical school:In other words I wasn't being fully focused on what I was doing.
OK, the images were drawn on all eight scarves, I tacked them to the studio wood frame in preparation for dying. I dyed two scarves at a time, let them dry overnight, then tacked two more, till all eight scarves were dyed. On the 5th day I wrapped them in sheets of paper, then rolled the packaged scarves onto the wire cylinder and tied the package to secure it to the cylinder to prevent the packaged scarves from slipping into the water while steaming:God forbid!

The six day I set up my steamer, waited for the water to steam, then placed the rolled scarf package onto the riser in the steam pot; This keeps the scarves out of the water, and just allows the steam to penetrate the scarves. I set the timer for two hours. But I ran up and down the steps 10-12 times to make sure everything was safely steaming.
Steaming time was up,I carefully removed the steaming scarf package, snipped the ties that held the scarves on the cylinder, unrolled each scarf. I draped the scarves over chairs to allow them to air dry overnight. Next day they were all washed in a gentle sudsy bath, rinsed dozens of times, then ironed.
Next day as I began to get ready to take photos of them on my mannequin head prop.

As I draped the scarves in different positions to get the best shot, I notice to my most horrific awareness that all the images were inverted! In other words instead of drawing the images facing outward , away from the designer, I drew them facing me.
This affect will cause the observer who looks at the scarf while being worn, to cock their heads sideways, or upside down to get the proper view!!
That my friends is the reason for the title" Granny Goofs: Your Gain" As a result these scarves which would have a $40.00 price tag will now be almost given away for $25.00.

I wish not to take anything from winter. In fact when it gets close to Christmas, I am all for Ho, Hoing, and merrily ringing bells while dashing through tropical sands, oops, snow.

During the end of November, I began a spring painting;seems like fall had just ended,and I was wistfully looking forward to spring. So I painted a spring garden scene:
I love a garden filled with hyacinth, golden daffodils, and red tulips. In this painting I added an old apple tree just beginning to get its leaves.

Now, don't think me related to the green Grinch or anything such as that. Last Saturday, I hunted up my handed down through the generations gingerbread recipe.
This is a complex culinary concoction. The wet ingredients consisting of molasses, applesauce,brown sugar, butter, are brought to a boil then simmered for 5 minutes.
After letting it cool, you add this to dry ingredients of flour, ginger, cloves(ground),cinnamon, and dash of baking soda. You have to cover it and let stand in the fridge over night, or you wouldn't be able to handle the dough. But, if you have an acquaintance or family member you are not fond of you can let that important piece of info out of the written recipe. It'll be weeks before they get the goo off their hands, to be able to call you and ask what they missed in the recipe--Oh, am I a scamp or what?
OK, the next day you dust the area you're rolling the dough out with flour,cut your gingerbread men out, (have to have a gingerbread cookie cutter). Now you can also make lady gingerbread by only pressing the upper part of the cookie cutter, then use a sharp knife to cut an upside down triangle where the legs of the boys would have been.
It then looks like the bottom of a dress: Mind you , not a flirty mod dress, but the old fashion dress of days gone by.

For The Holiday Season`Five New Silk Scarves: By MysticSilks

Every time I am in the midst of creating a new selection of silk scarves,after spending hours on my feet hand dying the silk, I swear to myself, this is the last time.
But the process does not start with the dying,it really begins with the designing of what pattern I want seen on the silk.
With this selection of new silk scarves, I drew templates for each scarf.

The first one was the pattern I call Stained Glass Silk( that'is the scarf in the upper left side. .......... After I drew the template/s( and this applies to all the scarves shown today) I placed waxy tracing paper over the template. I did this to prevent the water based resist( the liquid I use to draw the pattern onto the silk) from sticking to and runing the template/s.

You can look at the templates and tell which scarf it was used for.

The silk scarf next to" Stained Glass on Silk", is "The Cosmos". I did not use a template for this one.--:)

The Third scarf on the left is " Pinwheels". The template for that one is right above the finished scarf.

The next one " Sunshine and Lollipops" and for some reasons you can see two templates used for that scarf.--:)

Then last but not least is "And all That Jazz". You can see its template right below the scarf.

I never seem to be able to upload my photos to my liking on blogger.com. And I have too much 'attention deficit disorder' to read in depth on how to upload photos, or to at least re-arrange photois once uploaded.

After the patterns were all drawn on the scarves,and the scarves were then pinned to my wooden dying frames,I began the process of doing just that, dying.Now, I want to share with you, That after I began dying " Stained Glass on Silk" I could have bitten my bottem lip off! Placing different colored dyes in each block, or space on that scarf took 3 hours of standing on my feet, on a cement floor. Whew!

But, it turned out so unique and beautiful, like giving birth, I had to say it was all worth it.

Just as an added thought, and it has not one thing to do with creating silk scarves. But have you ever wondered at how many times you handle an item you buy at the grocery store before you even pick it up to use it?

Eight times!! I counted this morning after coming home with the groceries.

MysticSilks Has Gone Bonanza!

Hi all.
Just wanted to let the world(friends) know that MysticSilks has taken a leap of luck, faith;whatever you call taking a chance and joined another online selling site, called Bonanza.
I saw a link on etsy in the forums, but it wasn't called Bonanza, it was called 1000markets.com. I clicked on that link and was taken to a place called Bonanza. I clicked my tongue, and clicked out of that place, still hell-bent on finding 1000markets.
Well after doing this procedure several times, I stopped and read that 1000markets sold out to Bonanza. OMG! OK, so I read through their set-up process and decided to join.

I'm going to see if I gain any more sales there. etsy has changed so many things, and the competition with folks from China who are now selling mass produced silk scarves on etsy, perhaps people are bypassing my shop. Who knows?

Happy Feet Goes Silent~By MysticSilks

Remember Happy Feet , the emperor penguin, who washed up on a New Zealand beach in June with his belly full of sand. He was treated at Wellington's Zoo, and then released back into the ocean after his recuperation. He was fitted with a tracking device but has not been heard from in awhile since his release into the ocean:His tracking system has gone silent.
What really took place?

Well, Happy Feet was the Johnathan Livingston Seagull of the penguins. He knew that his chances of survival in the Arctic Ocean were near to nil. After all he had seen his mother, father, brothers and sisters, and probably some cousins get swallowed by Orca whales, or Great White sharks;penguins were on the daily menu for those big boys!
Happy Feet decided he wanted a different fate. He made up his mind to jump into the ocean and swim in a different direction , away from where his carnivorous enemies lived. He figured if he could beach himself in a place where humans would see him---well, they'd take pity on him and find a nice zoo in which to place him.

Humans are not always so smart. Yes, they did rescue him. Yes, they did nurse him back to health. Then what did they do? They tossed him back into an environment that could prove most disastrous to his well-being.

And, I think since they can no longer track Happy Feet, it might just mean that he ended up as dinner. So much for trying to find a different way of life.

But, nice try Happy Feet, nice try!

Remembering 9/11```By MysticSilks

It's September 9th, 2011: Ten years after the Twin Towers were attacked by an Islamic terrorist group; the towers went down and 3, 000 people were exterminated. Then the attack on the Pentagon, and the third attack plane headed for the White House taken down by a bunch of Oh ,so brave and unique Americans causing it to crash in Pennsylvania before it reached Washington. Then USA and other countries sent troops to Iran, and again Afghanistan. Having troops there were going to make us safer.
We've had military troops in those countries going on ten years now.
However, all this week and especially today I am listening to reports from our security advisers that we could be attacked this weekend by the terrorists use of bombs in subways, or tunnels: So once again we are on high alert. These terrorists supposedly made their way into the USA in August.
Why do we let these people into our country? During the war with Japan back in the 40's, we made sure any one who looked suspect was rounded up and put into interment camps. Yes, it was a shame that people who meant us no harm were also included in the round-up. WE didn't want to take any chances for attacks on the mainland, Hawaii was enough!

But it appears that the Islamic terrorists have no problem gaining entry in this country.

I think we should have a set-up for any admission into this country where the person/s who wish to enter this country have to give a written statement as to the reason for their visit, and also a contact address,phone number of where they can be reached.
Or in order to enter this country one has to wear a chip that will show where this person is no matter where they travel. They can only stay for a limited time and must check in with security officers daily via phone.

I really feel sad that we have to have armed security guards at every subway , at every major football game, in every airport to thwart any potential attack: Our lives have been changed so drastically by the threat of terrorists attacks, I wonder how we can still call this country "The Land Of the Free?" when we appear to walk in fear.
And I wonder will we ever feel the total freedom we once experienced in this great country called America?

United States in Debt. How Did That Happen?```MysticSilks

I was born right after the Great Depression. My Mother never forgot how it felt to be poor.She knew how to live and feed a family of five on meager food scraps; no such thing as eating out, and we never turned our noses up at left overs. Mom knew how to budget.
I grew up and managed a family of six on a limited income. If we wanted something, we saved for it;we lived on a budget. Why doesn't our government know how to live on a budget? Why is it, that the men and women we elected never take a pay cut, never have a freeze on their salaries? And in fact they continue to vote for increases in their salaries? Why is it that the Senate and Congressional representatives of 'we the people' live high on the hog, and have no idea what it is to live on a budget?
Is it because they have an unlimited income, the tax revenues of the American people?
How is it, that the President freezes Social Security for two years in a row, and he uses Air Force 1 like it was a local taxi service to the tune of a million smackeroos for each trip. His family fly's on vacation at the expense of 'we the people': I can't recall the last time my family had a vacation.
It seems like Washington , D.C. is the land of Oz. Everyone there lives in a world away from 'reality'---and we the people pay for their delusional thinking.
We, the average citizen work our butts off, and struggle from paycheck to paycheck, if we're fortunate enough to have a job. It's not 'our 'mismanagement of money that causes this country to be on the brink of financial default: It is the fault of those we've elected to run this country.

It's time for a new form of government, a real government that is truly 'a government for the people and by the people'.

Disgruntled On Etsy~~MysticSilks

I was browsing the etsy forums this morning to see if there were any new changes coming up. I posted again to bring the thread alive, about etsy allowing feedback comments for buyers to be resurrected again. It does appear to be a lopsided system, when only the comments left for sellers are able to be viewed, but not comments left for buyers.
I am leaving the boosting up again of the thread regarding a petition for 'fine art' artists.
If you've read my previous blog you'll see what I am writing about.

I ran across another etsy customer, a seller, who is quite disgruntled and she wrote some valid comments in her post: I was impressed, so I requested her permission to copy and paste it here to share.
This is the question she posted:

I personally disagreed in this posted thread, that we are not members. Members of anything have a vote, have a say in the policies and procedures of an organization.

This does not take place on etsy . We are customers. We pay a listing fee, then pay a commission to etsy for any sales.

Yelling, swearing and freaking out...

It's not going to happen, I have no yelling IN me at this point.
I think I've made myself free to speak lately because I JUST don't care if I'm muted or not. Heck, I'm doing better elsewhere, and soon I'll be selling in yet another location. So I don't even care if my shop is brickwalled anymore.

That's a sad thing to say, because I *used* to be ETSY's biggest cheerleader, I accepted that they were new, trying something no one had done before, and doing it better than ebay.... I knew there were flaws.

But recently the flaws and cracks have gotten so big, because there's too much new stuff in too short a time. the OLD problems have never been actually fixed... So the old problems continue to get worse as "new shiny but not really useful" get rolled out.

Old problems continue as the clicks between point A (thumbnail of item) to point B (page for the item) were increased. click on a shops icon and you land on the profile (at least for awhile I haven't kept up with that.) If people are saying: "i'm SHOPPING, I want to see the SHOP first, I'll go to the profile IF I want to..." no one cares.

So when features we desperately need are not working right after 4-5 years of us asking for them to be fixed, and we keep seeing new useless, and buggy features either being buggy or being abused... we're told to shut up.

When the MEDIA got hold of the privacy issue, Etsy's "fix" was to break the feedback system so that it's now easily used as an extortion tool on sellers.
The real privacy problem is STILL there and still not fixed and no one seems to care.
We've begged for a fully functional search since I signed up here 5 years ago, we've been begging for a direct phone number to get customer service we still can't directly, easily call Etsy, a function that SHOULD be in place with any business from the get go. If the business is serving clients globally that businesses needs to be able to be contacted BY PHONE 24/7/363 ... and if the business is global it needs to have that phone line available from the time it opens it's doors. A customer who can't get their log in to work can't contact you via chat.

I think it's way too late for ETSY to fix their spreading reputation as a buggy site with random rule enforcement....

I think it's way to late for ETSY to win back my trust.

When we've said "We need this problem/bug to be fixed" and get a reply that translates to "we'll get around to it eventually"

we feel like we're just employees with a boss that doesn't care, or worse "just the temp" or "just the intern", rather than customers/clients who rely on the services to support our businesses.

I I started selling on etsy.com in 2007. At that time etsy was sort of new and growing everyday. Etsy admins, those in charge of the online selling site, would listen to their sellers, essentially etsy's customers.
Etsy, seemed to want to build a quality online site, that sold handmade creations like; jewelry, handbags,quilts,fashion items,etc.,.I use the etc., only because to try and name everything that is sold on etsy would take up an unbelievable amount of space in this blog post.
Back in 2007 they(etsy) wanted to know what the sellers wanted and what they thought would help their shops and items gain exposure on etsy. and the vast internet.
I create and sell silk scarves. In addition I also create and sell fine art in the form of silk paintings, acrylic paintings, and an occasional oil painting. or water-color.
I have been actively involved with other etsy fine art artists in encouraging etsy to add a fine art category: So many other online selling sites have a fine art category. It's really not rocket science!

We had been promised back in 2009, that they(etsy) had hired a taxonomist who was going to put together all that was required to add a fine art category, and in fact many of the fine art artists were asked for their input, which was generously given to the taxonomist. We waited, and we waited, and waited some more for a fine art category to be added to etsy's search.

We started a petition : We believe that the artists who took the time to sign our petition would love to see these changes take place.

That petition has 872 signatures requesting more exposure for fine art on etsy, such as a fine art category.
In the meanwhile etsy has added more bells , whistles, giddgets, and gadgets, circles, and what-nots, that it makes your head spin! But not a word about adding a fine art category.

There's a new CEO, Chad. We're hoping that maybe Chad enjoys fine art , and will begin the process of adding a fine art category.

It sure would be great!

Silk Head Candy(Silk Head Scarves)``Mysticsilks

This is the last four of the ten in my "Silk Head Candy series." I found I am going to have to retake some of the photos before posting on etsy.com.
I noticed while uploading the photos that ll the front views showed the scar in my 'prop girls' head. Not sure how that happened. But she did travel to many art fairs with me sometime ago, and with everything being stored in the van , and the carrying of a display tent, plus chair, paintings, and scarves, it's a wonder my scarves and painting remained whole and untouched.
So, I am thinking that's why 'prop girl' has the scar.
So I am waiting for the house to clear out again, to where I can focus with clarity on taking new photos.

Silk Head Candy(Silk Head Scarves)``Mysticsilks

I've downloaded three more of the series of ten " Silk Head Candy" silk head scarves.
For those having experienced just one of the side affects of chemotherapy, the loss of one's hair, the desire to feel pretty and feminine is strong! These scarves are mostly for you!

After I washed and rinsed each scarf a dozen or more times to remove excess dye, I ironed them.
And, while I was setting up the ironing board, an inspiration came to me: Put a drop of the 'Holy Water' from the Lourdes , on each scarf before you iron it.
Now, the story behind this 'holy water' is a mystery to me, in that it has lasted for 15 + years Some friends went to France and visited "Lourdes", the place that Mary, the Mother of Jesus visited many years ago. It was told, that she had blessed the water with healing properties.
Well these friends brought back a tiny vile of that water---by all rights the amount that was in that vile should have evaporated. But it hasn't, and so a drop of it went on each scarf.
My hope is that it blesses each person who wears a scarf.

There are four more scarves to post and I hope to do that tomorrow!
