Last month in the course of one weekend our local rescues stepped in and saved 53 dogs and cats from a bad situation.

Taking in that many animals at one time is a strain on already tight resources. Please show your support by joining us at the Bradley Woods Pavilion, North Olmsted. The walk will start at the Pavilion and follow the path around the pond.

The cook out will follow at the Pavilion or at the picnic tables nearby. We will have hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and everything else you would expect at an all American cook out as well as treats for the pups!
We will also have a Chinese Raffle for some great prizes.Partners with Paws has pledged to match what we raise with a donation of their own so let’s show our support for our local rescue groups!

K-9 Massage, Giving Your Dog A New Leash on Life.

Dr. Michael Fox, noted veterinarian and author, states in his book, The
Healing Touch, that pet massage is “…an essential of health care, like
grooming, feeding and exercise.” Linda McKenna, owner of Pet Kneads Canine Massage in Sheffield Lake, couldn’t agree more. In 2003, after working as a Social Worker for 25 years in various medical settings, she took a leap of
faith and made a decision to pursue a profession as a canine massage
practitioner. “If someone truly follows their heart it’s bound to lead them to their  passion and purpose in life. I am a firm believer in giving back since
I’ve enjoyed so many blessings in life. One of those blessings has been the
gift of sharing my home with a variety of dogs over the years who generously
offered the gift of unconditional love day in and out. I view doing canine
massage as a privilege and labor of love.” Linda assists dogs in their
process of self-healing, whether they be companion, show, agility, service, or
therapy animals.

Canine massage is a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free form of care that
helps to maintain and extend the length and quality of a dog’s life. Contrary
to some people’s beliefs, it is much more than petting or play; it is a
deliberate and focused technique of touching a dog. Each massage is tailored to meet your dog’s specific needs and each stroke is controlled in its
pressure, direction and purpose. The most basic animal sense of touch increases trust and bonding, as well as provides physical and emotional comfort and  well-being. Massage does the same type of things for dogs that it does for humans: increases circulation, flexibility, strength and muscle tone which, in turn, relieves pain and promotes relaxation.

Massage has a positive influence on both the physical and psychological
well-being of dogs of all ages and conditions. Its benefits include reduced
pain of muscles and joints from arthritis, hip dysplasia and other chronic
or degenerative problems, naturally, by warming, stretching, and relaxing
the affected area(s). Specific techniques can assist in releasing muscle
tenderness and spasms and increase range of motion all the while improving
immune function by removing toxins that build up within the body. If your dog
has experienced an injury or surgery, massage can help to speed up the
recovery process. When one part of the body is not functioning properly, it
forces other parts to work harder to compensate. Your dog’s entire body needs to be addressed in order to more thoroughly correct the problem.

Both human and animal bodies have self-healing mechanisms. Occasionally,
these mechanisms need assistance to get things moving and balanced again. If you notice that your dog is not moving as easily, limping, having trouble
going up or down stairs or appears sore/stiff following exercise then it
would be appropriate to contact a canine massage practitioner (after first
consulting with your veterinarian to rule out any medical problems). Massage  is never a substitute for veterinary care, it is complementary to both traditional and holistic treatment.

Just as humans, dogs are emotional creatures. They have thoughts, feelings
and experience pain, loneliness and anxiety. Canine massage can affect
issues related to fear, anxiety or any stressful period of adjustment such as
a new home, boarding situation or the addition/loss of a family member or
pet. It also provides comfort and care to dogs and their owners coping with
end of life situations. Some people may decide they just want to pamper
their pets with a little TLC. A relaxing massage is a wonderful way to do this
and return some of the undying love they receive on a daily basis from
their canine companion! Owners can also be taught massage techniques to
perform on their dogs, especially if they are dealing with a chronic medical
condition that needs attention on a frequent basis.

After reading this essay, I wanted to share it with everyone because it answers the question of how massage improves quality of life for dogs beautifully. Snack on, our pup pals….!

We are really blessed to have such wonderful parks to enjoy with our dogs. Summer has officially begun (Hooray), and you may be thinking of heading out to the hiking trails with your best friend.  There are a few things to think about before you hit the trails to make sure that both you and your pup have a great experience.
The first thing to ask yourself is whether you and your dog are in shape for long hikes. Did you keep an active lifestyle all winter? Or did you hibernate? If your winter sport involves the couch and TV remote, plan to start with short walks on level ground and gradually build up to longer more strenuous trails.
Once you are ready to hike, make sure the park you are headed to allows dogs on the walking and hiking trails. While most of the Metroparks do there a a few exceptions, and some parks restrict dogs to certain trails.  Don’t forget to bring the poop bags, and also be keenly aware of the surfaces you will be walking on. Blacktop can heat up in the sun and burn your dogs paws. Gravel can cause abrasions to foot pads. Keep an eye on your dog and watch for any limping or change in gait. Musher’s Secret is an organic wax made to protect paws from rough conditions. Regular use prevents rough dry paw pads. We carry Musher’s in store.

The next thing you need to know is whether your hiking/walking destination has water available. If you are sure it does, a collapsible bowl is perfect for your pup to get a drink…..oh, and don’t forget water for yourself of course. (ha) 

If there isn’t water available plan to carry water with you, and always take more than you think you will need. Plan your walk or hike so you turn around when you reach the halfway point of your water supply. Try not to let your dog drink from ponds or streams along the way. A good rule to live by is if you wouldn’t drink the water don’t let your dog drink it either. Pesticides and other chemicals from lawn runoff could be in there along with parasites from animal feces. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Keep your dog on a leash at all times. Even if you are confident in your recall training a leash is a must! The Metroparks require dogs to be leashed at all times. If your dog takes off after a deer or rabbit he or she might not find their way back to you. Most of the parks are bordered by busy roads, which spells out disaster if your pup gets keyed in and focused on chasing the deer he saw.

Also, did you know that tick season is in full swing… and there is a higher tick population than usual this year. Several area vets have commented to us they are seeing ticks on dogs that use chemical flea and tick treatment. We have several types of all natural spray repellents available, using one on your dog prior to heading out to the park is a good idea!  Make sure you check your dog and yourself for ticks when you get home.

These few thoughts about planning a safe and enjoyable hike will keep you and your best friend moving all summer long.
