Our 2010-2011Winter Adult Reading Club: "Discover A Great Author At Your Library" is officially over as of February 28th. We had 69 registrants read 529 books. Way to go, everybody!

We'd like to thank the Friends of the Pasco County Libraries for purchasing our display posters. We'd also like to thank Publix and Panera Bread for their prize donations. The Friends of the New River Library bought us Barnes and Noble gift cards. Stay tuned for our February prize winner announcement.

PCLS Book Discussion Clubs

Interested in sharing your thoughts on a good book, want to exhange ideas, want to meet new people!

The Pasco County Library System has several book clubs throughout the county. Each branch hosts discussion groups at different times throughout the month. Check the calendar of events for locations, dates and times. Not all clubs meet every single month. Contact your branch for book titles. Here is a sampling of meeting times:

Starting on July 16th, 2010, one of our most popular classes returns. Tai Chi for Beginners. Classes will be held on July 16, 23, 30, & August 6, 2010. All programs will be at 11:00 AM. This summer, Pasco County Library System will be hosting a series of networking breakfasts for the business community. If you own a business and are interested in making new contacts and learning more about the resources available to you as a business owner in Pasco County, join us for the business networking breakfast at your local branch library! Agencies represented at the breakfasts include the Small Business Development Center, the Pasco County Economic Development Council, and local Chambers of Commerce, among others.

Attendees are invited to enjoy a light breakfast of bagels, donuts, fruit, juice and coffee provided by the Friends of the Library. The breakfasts will be offered at 8:30 a.m. on the following dates:

Saturday, May 15th is the Hudson Spring Author Fair, from 1 to 3 pm in the Hudson Library. Come and meet our local talent. Get to know them! Maybe buy a book or two! All types of genres will be represented; children's fiction, young adult fiction, history, poetry, and fiction of all kinds. Should be a fun event!

Databases! What are they?

Did you know that libraries have resources other than books, magazines, and the internet? They also have what are called databases. Databases are electronic resources for magazine and journal articles, newspapers, encyclopedias and other reference books, and phone books. Databases even offer information on small engines, marine engines and automobiles. Other databases even offer test prep and career skills help.

The databases for the Pasco County Library System are located under the "Catalog/Research" tab on the libraries homepage. Once you get the drop down box, just click on the link for "Databases." You will then be taken to a page that lists the all of the database categories. Pick a category to search. The computer will then take you to that particular database. Along the way, it will ask for your library card number, so have it handy.

How do databases differ from the web?

Library databases get their information from professionals or experts in the field. Websites can be written by anyone regardless of expertise.*

Library databases contain published works where facts are checked. Website content is not necessarily checked by an expert.*

Library databases are easy to cite in a bibliography and may create the citation for you. Websites often don’t provide the information necessary to create a complete citation.*

Library databases can help you narrow your topic or suggest related subjects. Websites often aren’t organized to support student research needs.*

Library databases are updated frequently and include the date of publication. Websites may not indicate when a page is updated.*

So, check out this handy resource. If you can't find the research you need in a book or on the web, a database may have the answer. Remember, they are citable sources of information.

Florida and the Caribbean: From Ponce de León to Hugo Chavez

Speaker: Paul Dosal

Florida has been an outpost of Caribbean civilizations since 1513, when Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León arrived from Puerto Rico. Through a history of Caribbean products—including rum, cigars, sugar, coffee, and bananas—and a history of Caribbean rulers—including Papa Doc Duvalier, Rafael Trujillo, Fidel Castro, and Hugo Chavez— historian Paul Dosal highlights the political and economic forces that have bound Florida to the Caribbean for more than 500 years.

Paul Dosal is professor of history and executive director of ENLACE (Engaging Latino, African American, and other Communities for Education) at the University of South Florida. As director of ENLACE, Dosal manages a statewide network organized to promote college readiness, access, and success for Latino and African-American students. A third-generation descendant of Cuban immigrants who settled in Ybor City in 1889, he specializes in the history of the modern Caribbean, with particular interests in the history of Cuba and Guatemala. He has published four books and numerous scholarly articles and book reviews.
