Cameras in mobile phones are no longer used just for taking snap shots. The rapid growth of digital image processing has led to its growth of application in mobile phones too. The cameras in mobile phones can now be used to detect visual code markers in an image and eventually access the information embedded to it. A scenario for such an image processing is when one takes an image of the visual code marker next to the advertisement of a movie. With this visual code marker the mobile phone can decode the image and access the backend database to know the local screening time of the movie. Thus for a camera to detect the visual code marker in an image, it needs an implementation of unique algorithms. These algorithms mostly have the four main stages to ultimately retrieve its data. :

The main four stages are pre-processing and segmentation, region analysis, registration and thresholding. All these stages are based upon visual code markers, how they are detected and decoded. Visual code markers are two dimensional bar codes which consists of an 11*11 square comprised of black and white bits. Two guide bars and three guide points are made fixed points for its digital detection. Thus out of 121, 83 contains specific information. These are read from top to bottom, right to left.

The first stage pre-processing and segmentation aims at transforming the captured image to a binary image to clearly identify the key elements of a visual code marker. The captured 640*480 RGB image is converted to a 640*480 binary image highlighting the key elements such as guide bars and fixed corners in the code marker. Next the image is enhanced to reduce its noise and smoothen it by applying morphological open-close filters which produces a grey scale image. After all the processing in the first stage the resulting will be a binary image which identifies the key element of the code marker. The next stage does a region analysis where each key elements of code marker are localized and grouped. The short and long guide bars are identified first, and then with its properties the fixed corner regions are found. These region analyses are made either based on intrinsic properties or geometric relationship between two regions. The registration is for correction for scaling and distortion in the image since it can be taken at a variety of distance and angles. If multiple code markers are present then registration is applied individually for each marker. After obtaining all the bit locations the last stage reads data bits from each grey-scale sub-image. Histogram equalization is applied to the grey-scale image obtain maximum contrast between 1- and 0- valued bits. Bit values are determined by applying threshold at the estimated bit centres. Thus the algorithm is invariant to scaling, rotation and blurring caused due to the device mobility. It is implemented in c and takes approximately 100ms to execute per image using a pentium4 3.40GHz computer.
Download this project in a Pdf format for your reference here: http://goo.gl/Fp6U7

The project which is anticipated to give a huge advancement in technology deals with face detection based on color segmentation followed by template/energy matching. The drive of the project is to detect the presence and absence of face using computers. In EE368 (a graduate level introductory course to the fundamentals of digital image processing) they have given the task of training a system using collection of seven digital image for this face detection purpose to a set of students.

Here as the students face many complexities from deriving the algorithm for the successful execution of the project and to the simple steps to be followed, the first limitation was its time consumption of seven minutes for a single file. The students got catch hold of this concept not in their day one. They primarily started by reviewing all the articles on the topic and came up by trying out the methods that already existed such as neural networks, statistical methods, machine learning algorithms such as SVM,FLD,PLC(such as eigen faces and concept of “face space” as well as recent methodology such as “Maximum Rejection Classification”(MRC).

The students first tried out their hands with mainly two concepts “Eingen faces” and “neural networks”. They planned to have the Eigen faces based front end and neural network based back end. Eigen faces is a facial recognition technology that has set of Eigenvectors used in computer vision problem of human face recognition. But the neural networks were a great hindrance to clearly study the inner working of their system and were even unable to reveal the précised shortcomings in their system which may be rectified if found out. Thus they decided to leave this and thought of taking a different approach based on colour segmentation followed by template/Energy matching.

This approach has shown a better performance taking 80 to 120 seconds to run which relies on its internal down sampling rate applied to the input image and other parameters which can be altered. Its Performance accuracy was approximated to 85% to 100%. With their final parameters, in Dell 1.8 MHz Pentium IV laptop it takes about 100 seconds.
A diverse team of nine students is participating in 2012 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, a global level that welcomes innovative biological system made from standard, interchangeable parts and which is simple to design and build. So don’t think what’s new in this, it happens every year and what the big deal in it. Yes, there is something more this time. But before telling about that, let me furnish you some statistics which can make us realise what a huge advancement is yet to happen through this project!

“Diarrheal” is not a new word to anyone. According to World Health Organization it is the second leading factor for death in children under 5 years, which almost kills 1.5 million children worldwide every year!! Now here is the catch. Students from Arizona state university have thus taken this issue into concern and are working to develop a simple device that detects contaminated drinking water.

Now coming to the project part, let me tell what the project is all about. This team from ASU is planning to develop a user friendly, DNA-based biosensor that can detect major pathogens. The team leaders words for this project is “we are developing a biosensor that can detect pathogenic bacteria such as, Shigella, Salmonella and E. coil that causes diarrhoea ”. And also adds saying “Ideally, you would use our biosensor to check different water supplies in the third world countries to determine whether the water is safe to drink”. This team is working on two designs.

Among them” the first one targets DNA, since each pathogen has different DNA we design a complementary sequences- sequences that match specific DNA. The DNA will be taken out from the sample and check whether it complements the DNA which is probed. If it complements, it is shown in colour response which tells that the water is contaminated.” Says Nisrag patel a molecular bioscience and biotechnology major in school of Life Science.

The second one tests the membranes of the bacteria. While using the device to test water, the water turns blue if certain protein is attached to the bacterial membrane indicating that the water is contaminated. Abinav Markus, a biomedical engineering student of ASU says “the advantage of this design to the previous designs in the field lies in the cheap production of the probes and the enzymatic chain reaction”
When at once this team met Madeline Sands, anthropology major in the university’s school of Human Evolution and Social change, she suggested this idea of low cost biosensor. She who had once travelled to Guatemala as a part of her ASU field experience, conducted community health research where she came to know that contaminated water contributes a serious health problem to a developing country. She says “my time in Guatemala made it clear that having a way to detect contaminated water would lead to further reduction in incidents and morbidity of diarrhoea”

This team will be presenting its device in this October during the iGEM regional competition at Stanford University. The other team members are: Rohit rajan, Ethan Ward, Hyder Hussain, Amanda Ispas and Ellen Qin. Kyile Standage-Beier, a biological science major and pervious iGEM team member, serves as an advisor. If successful they will be at the global competition in November at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This thesis aims at designing reduced size of the antennas elements which when used with an RF transceiver adapts with the radiation pattern and ensures better communication between master and slave mobile computers. In order to obtain a maximum efficiency, the project concentrate only on the antenna elements which is suitable to work in the bandwidth range of 2.45Ghz.the choice of the band is based on the fact that it is an ISM band which does not require permission for performing any experimental tests, another reason is that the antenna can be integrated to work with any standard communication devices that operate in this band such as IEEE802.11b standard and Bluetooth. Another advantage is that the Bluetooth modules and its associated w softwares are available in market by many manufactures at affordable prices so it becomes easy for any final year student to pursue this thesis.
From the last ten years we are being witnessing the rapid development of wireless communication which was possible mainly due to the advancements in the field of digital communication. This led to the transformation of the technology into many fields from military field. Since the digital communication had many advantages like resistance with noise and interference etc and better security with encoding techniques, makes it special unlike its analogue counterpart. These features assisted the rapid growth of the 2nd and 3rd generations of cellular phone systems.
The tremendous success of the cellular voice communication has led to the interest of using the radio communication technologies into other fields like wireless communication. Initially wireless computing was a process of inter linking computer and other devices sans wire and making it to perform all the operations like accessing, storing etc that was originally done by the devices using the wire, for example accessing the internet using a wireless acesspoint in places like hospitals universities etc, for the purpose of providing communication between the computers different part of electromagnetic spectrum can be used for transmission over the air, example Infra red radiations and light frequencies can be used but for using them there must not be any obstacles in between the line of site but this is only possible in indoors within less than 1 meter. laser communication also encounters the same problem even though it can be established over several kilometres, for achieving a non line of site communication we can make use of lower range electromagnetic spectrum namely radio frequencies. An application of a particular radio frequency band depends on specifications of the communication range and the bandwidth of the information-carrying signal. Lower range of radio frequencies is able to cover larger distances. However, this is at the expense of a narrower bandwidth for the signal carrying the message. Which was a disadvantage another shortcoming was the size of the antennas which was required for the launch of the radio signal from RF circuit in to the free space.

For a traditional antenna to work efficiently its size must be half of the free space wavelength so for 1Ghz the antenna must be 15 cms but apparently for microwaves and millimetre waves utilizing more than or above 1Ghz can offer a reduction in the size of the material radiating. The same frequencies can also offer substantial bandwidth for the information-carrying signal. For example, if it is assumed that a radio transducer operates over a 10% bandwidth, a 100MHz BW for a 1GHz carrier frequency system is theoretically obtainable.

The design and usage of the wireless computers needs a specific frequency band available for it. Everybody knows that the Radio Frequency spectrum is not a free commodity and it’s being governed by specific bodies to avoid its interference by irresponsible users. The other reason is that particular frequency bands can be allocated to specific services. Due to the importance of some offered services, a given frequency band, treated as commodity, may be worth of billions of dollars when auctioned by a government to competing bidders (companies).

Everybody knows about kindle Paper white which was an EReader from Amazon that bashed the old black and white EReaders formerly available from Amazon with its high resolution screen and 25% better contrast. The tablets came next. Right away, Amazon raised eyebrows by simultaneously dropping the price of its Kindle Fire while improving the hardware. The Kindle Fire is now just $159 and boasts increased RAM and battery life.

Next was the biggest event of Amazon was its launch of KINDLE FIRE HD in two different sizes 7” and 8.9” worth $199 and $299 respectively. The large-size tablet has an impressive 1,920 x 1,200-pixel resolution while the smaller is 1,280 x 800. Amazon says its new tablets have faster wireless connections than any others thanks to dual-antenna dual-band Wi-Fi that supports MIMO (multiple input/multiple output).

Next Amazon left all of its buyers in surprise by Kindle Fire HD tablet that packs a 4G LTE connection. Saying it was the one feature that could justify a price point of $499, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos went on to reveal that customers could get a year of LTE service for the device for just $50 (although the data is capped at 250 megabytes per month).

Now, why these things were considered as a big deal? Because the kind of competition that Amazon puts in front with that of the other companies is awesome most of its tablets and EReaders proves to be competitve to its rivalries like Google and apple which couldn’t survive in the market with its Google Nexus 7 and apple iPad.

Google improved upon the original Kindle Fire at the same $200 price point with the Nexus 7, Amazon had two countermoves in the revamped standard-def Kindle Fire for $159 and the $199 Kindle Fire HD. On the iPad front, the total cost between a 4G LTE iPad and a 4G LTE Kindle Fire HD is in the hundreds of dollars.

As Bezos said, Amazon is looking to make money off its services, not its hardware, revealing its secret to being able to price all its new toys so low. But it also has the effect of putting its competitors between a rock and a hard place in pricing their tablets — especially since not many have the breadth of services (e.g. Prime Video, Appstore and Cloud Player) that Amazon offers.

We may also think what is so special about Amazon apart from its prices but there are lots to say like The Paperwhite Kindle has the highest-resolution E Ink display currently available, at 212 pixels per inch. It can also measure your reading speed and tell you how much time it’ll take you to finish a book or chapter.

The Kindle Fire HD extends Amazon’s “X-Ray” feature — where you can find more information about subjects in your book — to things like movies and textbooks. You can now also switch from reading to listening as an audio book (say, while you’re jogging), and the Kindle will keep track of your place. There are also new parental controls, letting you do things like set time limits for certain apps, such as video games.

Now finally anybody who is thinking to buy an EReader may wait until till this, fall because apple is releasing another small screen iPad which may change the tablet market once again coz iPads are as popular as the Amazon.

This project is all about converting your smartphone into the remote of your computer wirelessly. There exist several situations where we want to wirelessly and comfortably operate a computer, where the computer screen is projected onto a big screen through a projector or big-screen television, such as classrooms, conference/meeting rooms, mobile, workgroup project environments and modern office environments, and even living rooms This project will eliminate most of the discomforts we experience in places like conference rooms class rooms and in places where presentations are given by projecting computers.

The main idea behind this system is that it makes use of the smartphone as the mouse of the computer being projected though there are several specifically designed devices are available on the market for the purpose of operating computers remotely and wirelessly. Wireless keyboard, uses either Bluetooth or wireless USB mini-receiver plugged into the USB port of computer for the communication between the keyboard and the computer. Some wireless keyboards have a touchpad for controlling the mouse cursor. Wireless presentation controller, allows user to operate his/her computer remotely for PowerPoint presentation through Bluetooth connection. It usually has several buttons, including mouse-left, mouse-right, next slide and previous slide buttons (for PPT presentation), and even a small size rectangle touchpad for moving mouse cursor. However, all those devices have certain drawbacks. Wireless keyboard has limited flexibility and is not Manuscript received June 2, 2012; revised July 1, 2012.

Whereas wireless presentation controller ensures its convenient for the presenter to carry around the place while presenting, which is not in the case of a wireless keyboard, apart from that it also doesn’t allow the presenter to have a complete control of the computer where as this device does have good mobility allow user to have full operation on the computer, such as running a program, moving or closing an application window, etc. Even it has a small touchpad for moving mouse cursor however it is very difficult for the presenter to use it to move the mouse cursor while he/she is walking around.

There is also a draw back with such devices where we can connect only one such device to the computer if suppose the session is an interactive one and the audience also want to connect to the computer to ask question means it’s not possible. This imposes inconvenience when a group of people, such as a project team or a company internal meeting attendees, are having discussion and need to interact with each other through the same computer with its screen projected onto a wall.

The widely used and very popular smart devices, such as iPad, smartphones, PDAs, and smart game controllers, can be the excellent alternatives as computer remote controllers if we develop appropriate apps for them. For example, Yang and Li developed a system to use WiiRemote, Wiimote in short, to remotely operate a computer, where Wiimote communicates with the computer through Bluetooth. B. Koo etc. proposed a framework of using smartphones to control consumer electronics. C. Wingrave and others provided an excellent tutorial on how to use a smart device, Nintendo Wii Remote (Wiimote) in 3D User Interface systems. Generally speaking, smart devices are digital, active, computer networked, and user reconfigurable devices that can operate to some extent autonomously. These devices usually have the many unique characteristics, such as

Small physical size for excellent mobility. They are designed for handholding and carrying around. They are owned and operated by individuals.
Good Human-Computer-Interface. They have a small touch screen, a build-in physical keyboard or soft keyboard, and run a simplified modern operating system with good graphics user interface. Strong network capability, such as Wi-Fi wireless and Bluetooth allowing Internet access.

Here in this project the inventor Chang-bae has used one kind of joint motor to assemble and control the robot toy in various shapes. This toy is vary interesting and effective for our projects because, we students normally have that interest towards the robotics and robots that can change shapes. Adding more to this project details, here this probate includes a plurality of joint mechanism parts which are having ability to assemble and disassemble to various forms, it has a processor with one plurality joint mechanism, for the output part this control signal is connecting to another joint with pre-feed patterns and more such parts.

The main objective of this project is to provide an AI, robotic toy and method of control that would vary the shape of the toy by requesting motions of the joints that are easily changeable and it also concentrates on reducing the number of parts used previously and reduce the time for changing the shape.

Now will you believe me if am going to tell you that yes, people grow fat with growing technology!?! Feeling that am linking two really unrelated things? Fine let me try to convince you with all the points that I have!

It’s now statistically proven that people grow fat with growing technology. According to The Milken institute, an economic thinking tank, about a 10% increase in information and communication technology (ICT) can increase the American population by 1.4% more people wearing shape wears, which can be approximated to around 4.2 million people!

The main factor is the “knowledge-based society” states The Milliken institute according to its survey and adds up “more processed food, spending enormous time in front of screens (TV, computers or playing video games etc.), which of course obviously leads to decreased energy usage, and last but not the least eating of junk foods”.

Let me give you a small visual statistics which proves this issue. Round the globe the obesity rates have up surged higher than the population’s blood sugar. Placing the key Asian countries in the bars shown below is the graph visualizing the growing rate of obesity in a short period of around 6 to 11 years with the era of rise in technology.

Starting with japan, it has an increase of 1.5times more from 2.2 to 3.9 for a period of 8 years span. South Korea is alike japan with 1.7times rise from 2.2 to 3.8 but in period of 11 years. China and India are the worst victims for this. While china has doubled from 2.5 to 5.7, India has almost tripled from 0.7 to 1.9! Now don’t even think in dream from seeing the chart that America is going to be an exception for this case. They have a rate of 33.3% increase in obesity beating all the countries shown above! For the past 2 decades the calories consumption per day has increased to 150-300 calories in U.S.

There are many ways to reduce this obesity like simple walking everyday can save your life from death sometimes! Around 2.8 million adults die due to these obesity or weight related diseases. It accounts to for around $147 billion for medical cost!
So it’s high time for us to realize and be conscious about our diet and health and keep an eye on our country’s obesity rates!

Everybody will like to have their handwriting being recognized by their computers. In this project we are going to see that dream of yours coming true, In this project the engineers have designed and implemented a Handwriting Recognition System using a touch screen from a Palm Pilot which is a second generation PDA device that is m125, a black and white TV and a Mega32 microcontroller.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of specifications regarding the built-in LCD on the Palm Pilot, we were unable to reverse engineer the LCD protocol, however, now we are able to understand how the touch screen works after some careful investigations.

The previous project was highly adaptive, which used sophisticated algorithm, it should be able detect any patterns. But in current project, however, we choose to use a simple algorithm, Nearest Neighbourhood Algorithm which is the first algorithms used to determine a solution to the travelling salesman problem. In it, the salesman starts at a random city and repeatedly visits the nearest city until all have been visited. It quickly yields a short tour, but usually not the optimal one. So we use this algorithm as we have very limited amount of time. Thus far it can only recognize simple characters but it is easily extensible. There is no fundamental difference between recognizing a character and any other kind of patterns using our algorithm.

As far as the source and the origination of the project is concerned, initially it began with automatic speech recognitions in the lab later it was considered as a very bad place for the same purpose since Mega32 is too slow for full-fledged Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. Then they came across Palm PPP a last year project when they were searching for new ideas, it is a Simon game based on a Palm m125 touch screen. They thought it would be fantastic idea to do handwriting recognition like Graffiti. It requires a touch screen, a novel hardware input device and some smart programming, a perfect combination for a detecting handwriting patterns.

Everybody knows chess was a game which originated in India before even 6th century symbolising two kingdoms fighting each other with all the four armies though it’s an interesting game it can’t be played anywhere, to overcome this problem there has been an project proposing to play chess anywhere with anyone in any part of the world with only internet connection.

The project is been named as “remote chess” and as already said it allows you play chess in real time against opponents anywhere in the world so long as there is an internet connection, and all that it requires is a Remote Chess chessboard, a NTSC television, and a computer running Mat lab, since chess is an open domain this project doesn’t have any trademarks associated with it.

The over view of the project can be summarized as the project’s goal was to create a pair of chess boards for playing remote chess. These chessboards had to detect the movement of pieces and transmit data regarding those moves to each other. The transmission is sent using a serial connection which makes use of the serial ports. The range of this connection is extended through a Mat lab script bridging the serial ports of two Computers which are connected to each other over the Internet.

Now to know how this really works is that, for our chess board to function they needed to perform four separate tasks: scan each tile of the board for the presence or absence of a piece, compare this with previous values, communicate with the other board, and communicate with the user.

The user interface of the project, the user’s input is as simple as moving his pieces on the board. Previous final projects have determined that moving pieces automatically is difficult and inaccurate; therefore this project allows the users to move the pieces themselves. The opponent’s moves are shown with a graphical representation on a TV screen. Since the player can see where his opponent has moved pieces by looking at the TV screen, he does not need to have his opponent’s pieces on his board. So once this project get to be implemented practically everyone can gets a chance to play chess anywhere and anytime.

Square up: The credit card readers that plugs into your iPhones or Android mobiles

Now first of all, all the credits go to “square Inc.” which has come up with this very smart apps and device. Has anyone ever thought of having the credit card reader for yourself and making your formal or informal transactions so easy or simple? Am sure everyone would now have murmured “NO”. Fine let’s first see what this square is actually doing!

“Square” is an application which allows its user to accept credit cards and transacts money according to its customers’ need. This square was actually born from the brains of two people “Jim McKelvey”& “Jack Dorsey”.

Shown above is an IPhone with the square card reader plugged to its ear jack making a transaction. This square actually refers to the square card reader that is plugged to the phone. Now how does this all work together? Let’s see.
All that one needs to get started is just an iPhone or iPod touch or an iPod or one of the few android devices that supports this service. Along with it one has to get the card reader device which is of free of cost and the square apps which can be downloaded easily. Having all these ready in hand, one is all set to use the service right away! Yes this doesn’t have any monthly or termination fee.
Coming to how it works your “square” device gets recognized once you plug it into your mobile’s ear jack. Swipe your credit card (make the bar code or the magnetic part face the thicker part of the reader) and once it’s read successfully you can start the transaction. Enter the amount that needs to be transacted and after few authentication processes like signing etc. your amount will be transacted successfully and you’ll be getting intimation for the successful transaction.

Square provides two ways of transaction to its user with different charging fee. Either we can use the device to swipe our card or manually enter the values and proceed. It charges 2.75% for every swiped transaction and 3.50% plus $0.15 for every manually-entered transaction. It accepts all US-issued credit, debit or gift cards that have a Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American express logo on it.
So get started with this cool service by registering yourself with square’s website to get the card reader free!

Title: Transmission of audio by LASER.

This project on transmission of audio signals is very interesting for young engineering students who are in good mind set to develop projects by themselves to improve their practical knowledge. Working on this project of audio transmission will need strong basics in electronics but you need not worry if you are a beginner or amateur.

The paper attached below are brief enough for any engineering student to understand it and work on it.

So we all know that LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation most of the science majors, right from the day they were shown a laser in either classes or somewhere else, will have a attraction towards it. So if you haven't done a project with a laser, use this opportunity to work. We all know that light is now widely used a media of communication at different applications. We know about fiber optics too. where the data is converted into light and feed into one end of a fiber cable and received at the other end.

Download this complete paper about this project here: http://goo.gl/OnrCW

This was one of the very interesting articles that i came across in the recent days in one of the top knowledge spreading website "How stuff works". Being most of our readers/visitors are young engineers whoa re very much interested in technology and computers, I found this piece of news good for a share with our readers.

We all know what are viruses coz they are a nightmare of long time, some of the possible effects of them are the information on a hard drive, tie up traffic on a computer network for hours, turn an innocent machine into a zombie and replicate and send themselves to other computers. This is for someone who has never been a victim of computer viruses, according to Consumer Reports, computer viruses helped contribute to $8.5 billion in consumer losses in 2008. Though Computer viruses are just one kind of online threat, but they're arguably the best known of the bunch.

Computer viruses have been around for many years. In fact, in 1949, a scientist named John von Neumann theorized that a self-replicated program was possible. The computer industry wasn't even a decade old, and already someone had figured out how to disrupt the whole process.

Personalizations of computers were the main reason which led to the development of these viruses in large scale. A doctoral student named Fred Cohen was the first to describe self-replicating programs designed to modify computers as viruses. The name has stuck ever since.

During 1980’s viruses depended on humans for doing the job of spreading to all other computers but after the venture of “hackers” the scenario changed As an hacker would save the virus to disks and then distribute the disks to other people. Today when we think of a computer virus, we usually imagine something that transmits itself via the Internet. It might infect computers through e-mail messages or corrupted Web links. Programs like these can spread much faster than the earliest computer viruses.
We're going to take a look at 10 of the worst computer viruses to cripple a computer system. Let's start with Melissa virus.

10) Melissa:
Let’s trace to the year 1999, during the spring of that year, a man named David L. Smith created a computer virus based on a Microsoft Word macro. He built the virus so that it could spread through e-mail messages. Smith named the virus "Melissa," saying that he named it after an exotic dancer from Florida.
This virus is sent along with the mail and it tempts the person to open it saying that “not to reveal the message to anybody” once the person falls for it will be sent to 50 other people on the contact list of the receiver.
The virus spread rapidly after Smith introduced it on the world. The United States federal government became very interested in Smith's work -- according to statements made by FBI officials to Congress, the Melissa virus "wreaked havoc on government and private sector networks". The increase in e-mail traffic forced some companies to discontinue e-mail programs until the virus was contained.
After a lengthy trial process, Smith lost his case and received a 20-month jail sentence. The court also fined Smith $5,000 and forbade him from accessing computer networks without court authorization. Ultimately, the Melissa virus didn't cripple the Internet, but it was one of the first computer viruses to get the public's attention.
Flavors of Viruses
In this article, we'll look at several different kinds of computer viruses. Here's a quick guide to what we'll see:
• The general term computer virus usually covers programs that modify how a computer works (including damaging the computer) and can self-replicate. A true computer virus requires a host program to run properly -- Melissa used a Word document.
• A worm, on the other hand, doesn't require a host program. It's an application that can replicate itself and send itself through computer networks.
• Trojan horses are programs that claim to do one thing but really do another. Some might damage a victim's hard drive. Others can create a backdoor, allowing a remote user to access the victim's computer system.

9) ILOVEYOU
Once after the internet was saved from “Mellissa” the threat came in the form of worm, there was this virus which was also a standalone program which bored the message called “I love you” to attract people, once it was opened by an Casanova it starts to replicate and create tantrum.
The possible effects on your computer when you accept the proposal would be...
• It copied itself several times and hid the copies in several folders on the victim's hard drive.
• It added new files to the victim's registry keys.
• It replaced several different kinds of files with copies of itself.
• It sent itself through Internet Relay Chat clients as well as e-mail.
• It downloaded a file called WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE from the Internet and executed it. Rather than fix bugs, this program was a password-stealing application that e-mailed secret information to the hacker's e-mail address.

Now for the origin of this virus most of them think that it was created by Onel de Guzman of the Philippines.

8) Klez virus:
Klez gave new dimensions to the entire internet virus that was present at that point of time. It debuted in late 2001, and variations of the virus plagued the Internet for several months. It was a worm that was sent to the victim through an email and it would replicate and send itself to all the people in the contact list of the victim, sometimes it may also disable the scanning process done in the system making the damage irreversible. Some variations of the Klez virus carried other harmful programs that could render a victim's computer inoperable
Like other viruses, it could comb through a victim's address book and send itself to contacts. But it could also take another name from the contact list and place that address in the "From" field in the e-mail client. It's called spoofing -- the e-mail appears to come from one source when it's really coming from somewhere else. Spoofing an e-mail address accomplishes a couple of goals. For one thing, it doesn't do the recipient of the e-mail any good to block the person in the "From" field, since the e-mails are really coming from someone else. A Klez worm programmed to spam people with multiple e-mails could clog an inbox in short order, because the recipients would be unable to tell what the real source of the problem was. Also, the e-mail's recipient might recognize the name in the "From" field and therefore be more receptive to opening.

7) Code red code red II:
This virus came to existence from the summer of year 2001.Both of them started exploiting the os of the machine in which it was running. Mostly machine with windows 2000 and Windows NT were very venerable to this virus. The vulnerability was a buffer overflow problem, which means when a machine running on these operating systems receives more information than its buffers can handle; it starts to overwrite adjacent memory. The original Code Red worm initiated a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the White House. That means all the computers infected with Code Red tried to contact the Web servers at the White House at the same time, overloading the machines.
Any computer that was affected by this virus won’t respond to the owner any longer coz the person who launched this virus would have created a backdoor and would access the system from that. In computing terms, this is called system-level compromise and its bad news for the computer's owner. The person behind the virus can access information from the victim's computer or even use the infected computer to commit crimes. That means the victim not only has to deal with an infected computer, but also may fall under suspicion for crimes he or she didn't commit.
While Windows NT machines were vulnerable to the Code Red worms, the viruses' effect on these machines wasn't as extreme. Web servers running Windows NT might crash more often than normal, but that was about as bad as it got. Compared to the woes experienced by Windows 2000 users, that's not so bad.
Microsoft released software patches that addressed the security vulnerability in Windows 2000 and Windows NT. Once patched, the original worms could no longer infect a Windows 2000 machine; however, the patch didn't remove viruses from infected computers -- victims had to do those themselves.

6) Nimda:
This virus was also launched in the same year its nothing but the word “admin” spelled in reverse. It spread the internet very rapidly becoming the fastest spreading virus at that point of time. In fact, according to TruSecure CTO Peter Tippett, it only took 22 minutes from the moment Nimda hit the Internet to reach the top of the list of reported attacks.
Nimda was mainly intended to damage the internet services though they could infect a PC also. Its main motive was to make the internet traffic to crawl. It would travel through internet using multiple ways like email etc. This helped spread the virus across multiple servers in record time.
The Nimda worm created a backdoor into the victim's operating system. It allowed the person behind the attack to access the same level of functions as whatever account was logged into the machine currently. In other words, if a user with limited privileges activated the worm on a computer, the attacker would also have limited access to the computer's functions. On the other hand, if the victim was the administrator for the machine, the attacker would have full control.
All the system resource became fodder to the Nimda worm and the network system failed more frequently. In effect, the Nimda worm became a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.
Phoning it In
Not all computer viruses focus on computers. Some target other electronic devices. Here's just a small sample of some highly portable viruses:
• CommWarrior attacked smart phones running the Symbian operating system (OS).
• The Skulls Virus also attacked Symbian phones and displayed screens of skulls instead of a home page on the victims' phones.
• RavMonE.exe is a virus that could infect iPod MP3 devices made between Sept. 12, 2006, and Oct. 18, 2006.
• Fox News reported in March 2008 that some electronic gadgets leave the factory with viruses pre-installed -- these viruses attack your computer when you sync the device with your machine .Next, we'll take a look at a virus that affected major networks, including airline computers and bank ATMs.
5: SQL Slammer/Sapphire:
It was late in the year 2003 when an unexpected attack happened on many dbms system because of the SQL virus called sapphire causing several ATM systems to crash, restricting people from 911 services, Continental Airlines had to cancel several flights due to electronic ticketing and check-in errors etc.
By some estimates, the virus caused more than $1 billion in damages before patches and antivirus software caught up to the problem. The progress of Slammer's attack is well documented. Only a few minutes after infecting its first Internet server, the Slammer virus was doubling its number of victims every few seconds. Fifteen minutes after its first attack, the Slammer virus infected nearly half of the servers that act as the pillars of the Internet.
However this virus taught people a valuable lesson that just by using a latest patches or by antivirus software we can’t restrict hackers who are constantly looking for weaknesses in developers. It proved that it’s also necessary to be ready for worst case attacks too.
A Matter of Timing
Some hackers program viruses to sit dormant on a victim's computer only to unleash an attack on a specific date. Here's a quick sample of some famous viruses that had time triggers:
• The Jerusalem virus activated every Friday the 13th to destroy data on the victim computer's hard drive
• The Michelangelo virus activated on March 6, 1992 -- Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475
• The Chernobyl virus activated on April 26, 1999 -- the 13th anniversary of the Chernobyl meltdown disaster
• The Nyxem virus delivered its payload on the third of every month, wiping out files on the victim's computer.

4) MyDoom:
The MyDoom or Novarg virus is another worm that can create a backdoor in the victim computer's operating system. The original MyDoom virus there has been several variants and it had two triggers. One trigger caused the virus to begin a denial of service (DoS) attack starting Feb. 1, 2004. The second trigger commanded the virus to stop distributing itself on Feb. 12, 2004. Even after the virus stopped spreading, the backdoors created during the initial infections remained active.
There was also a second outbreak that happened causing all the search engine companies to grieve. This virus searched the victim’s computer for email addresses as a part of its replication, it would also send a search request to a search engine and use e-mail addresses found in the search results. Eventually, search engines like Google began to receive millions of search requests from corrupted computers. These attacks slowed down search engine services and even caused some to crash.
MyDoom spread through e-mail and peer-to-peer networks. According to the security firm Message Labs, one in every 12 e-mail messages carried the virus at one time. Like the Klez virus, MyDoom could spoof e-mails so that it became very difficult to track the source of the infection.

3) Sasser and Netsky:
This virus is named after the person who created them, usually virus developers escape detection but there are also times when we can trace the origin of the virus one such case was this Sven Jaschan case a 17 yr old who developed two different programs which worked in different ways on the net. But made the security experts believe that they work for the same person.
The Sasser worm attacked computers through a Microsoft Windows vulnerability. Unlike other worms, it didn't spread through e-mail. Instead, once the virus infected a computer, it looked for other vulnerable systems. It contacted those systems and instructed them to download the virus. The virus would scan random IP addresses to find potential victims. The virus also altered the victim's operating system in a way that made it difficult to shut down the computer without cutting off power to the system. This is the story of Sasser virus as far as the Netsky is considered to move through the email over the net as usual. It spoofs e-mail addresses and propagates through a 22,016-byte file attachment. As it spreads, it can cause a denial of service (DoS) attack as systems collapse while trying to handle all the Internet traffic. At one time, security experts at Sophos believed Netsky and its variants accounted for 25 percent of all computer viruses on the Internet.

2) Leap-A/Oompa-A:
Maybe you've seen the ad in Apple's Mac computer marketing campaign where Justin "I'm a Mac" Long consoles John "I'm a PC" Hodgman. Hodgman comes down with a virus and points out that there are more than 100,000 viruses that can strike a computer. Long says that those viruses target PCs, not Mac computers.
But most of the time it’s true because the apple os are protected by a concept called “security through obscurity”. Apple is known for keeping it hardware and software both close there by making this operating system obscure. Traditionally, Macs have been a distant second to PCs in the home computer market. A hacker who creates a virus for the Mac won't hit as many victims as he or she would with a virus for PCs.
But this hasn’t stopped anybody from creating a virus that damages the MAC system; it was tied up with the iChat instant message program and went on clinging to all the other MAC systems on the list. The message contains a corrupted file that appears to be an innocent JPEG image.
The Leap-A virus doesn't cause much harm to computers, but it does show that even a Mac computer can fall prey to malicious software. As Mac computers become more popular, we'll probably see more hackers create customized viruses that could damage files on the computer or snarl network traffic. Hodgman character may yet have his revenge.

1) Strom Worm:
The latest virus on our list is the dreaded Storm Worm. It was late 2006 when computer security experts first identified the worm. The public began to call the virus the Storm Worm because one of the e-mail messages carrying the virus had as its subject "230 dead as storm batters Europe." Antivirus companies call the worm other names. For example, Symantec calls it Peacomm while McAfee refers to it as Nuwar. This might sound confusing, but there's already a 2001 virus called the W32.Storm.Worm. The 2001 virus and the 2006 worm are completely different programs.

The Storm Worm is a Trojan horse program. Its payload is another program, though not always the same one. Some versions of the Storm Worm turn computers into zombies or bots. As computers become infected, they become vulnerable to remote control by the person behind the attack. Some hackers use the Storm Worm to create a botnet and use it to send spam mail across the Internet.
Many versions of the Storm Worm fool the victim into downloading the application through fake links to news stories or videos. The people behind the attacks will often change the subject of the e-mail to reflect current events. For example, just before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, a new version of the worm appeared in e-mails with subjects like "a new deadly catastrophe in China" or "China's most deadly earthquake." The e-mail claimed to link to video and news stories related to the subject, but in reality clicking on the link activated a download of the worm to the victim's computer.

Several news agencies and blogs named the Storm Worm one of the worst virus attacks in years. By July 2007, an official with the security company Postini claimed that the firm detected more than 200 million e-mails carrying links to the Storm Worm during an attack that spanned several days. Fortunately, not every e-mail led to someone downloading the worm.

Although the Storm Worm is widespread, it's not the most difficult virus to detect or remove from a computer system. If you keep your antivirus software up to date and remember to use caution when you receive e-mails from unfamiliar people or see strange links, you'll save yourself some major headaches.

Selective encryption with coverage encryption: Brant L. Candelore

Selective encryption is a technique to save computational complexity or enable interesting new system functionality by only encrypting a portion of a compressed bitstream while still achieving adequate security. This project finds a method to provide selective encryption with coverage encryption. This project deals with A method and apparatus for enabling use of multiple digital rights management scenarios (DRM),where DRM (Digital rights management) is a class of access control technologies that are used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals with the intent to limit the use of digital content and devices after sale.

Unencrypted data representing digital content is examined to identify at least segments of content for DRM encryption. The identified segments of content are duplicated and then encrypted using a first encryption method associated with a first DRM to produce first encrypted segments. Duplicates are encrypted using a second encryption method associated with a second DRM to produce second encrypted segments. At least a portion of segments not selected for DRM encryption are encrypted using a coverage encryption method. The coverage encryption key is encrypted by each of a third and fourth encryption methods associated with the first and second DRMs respectively.

We all know the premium car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz who is a multinational brand. who works on all kinds of automobile like buses, cars, coached and trucks too. Now the company which excels in its research and development has taken its vision to the further that we were watching in the bond movies.

In the even of promotion for its prototype fuel-cell in germany, the company made one of its B-class hatchback invisible! Yes, it made the car invisible! The invisibility cloak which was covering the body of the car was made by employing a dozen of technicians and $263,000 worth of flexible LED fixed of mats covering one side of the car. On the other side the car had a good camera which shot the images and telecasted on the led mats at the right scale. The technology we all watched in "Die another day" and fascinated, here is comes. According to the company the main motto was to show the F-cell hydrogen fuel cell powered cars. which would be producing 0.0 emission to the environment. It produces only water vapor and heat for its emission.

What is this news spoken for: The invisible car, we saw in "Die another day" is coming on streets soon.

What was Benz's intention: Understand the power of "F-cell hydrogen fuel cell powered cars"

Its cool to be fascinated, but its high time to understand and learn more about these. To learn more on these technologies,

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/alternative-fuels/fuel-cell.htm

Title: Fuel efficient and inexpensive automobile.

Vehicles have to be cheap enough so that it’s in the reach of the people apart from that it may also posses features like fuel efficiency, eco friendly etc. This project explains the mechanism in which both the properties can be achieved in a vehicle.

An automotive wheeled vehicle of light weight and improved fuel efficiency has first and second laterally opposed drive wheels mounted upon a stationary axle which is positioned transversely to the direction of vehicle motion, where each drive vehicle is associated with a combustion engine which is separate and independent of each other so that it will provide a controlled forward motion of the vehicle.

As far as the reversed motion of the vehicle is concerned, an electric motor is used to provide a controlled reverse motion. It has two engines one is a primary and other is a secondary. The secondary engine is used to provide an auxiliary support when the primary engine is operating. This project helps in achieving fuel efficiency in a cost efficient way, using the above given mechanism.
Title of this Automobile engineering project: Fuel efficient vehicle with auxiliary cruiser engine.

About this project: Fuel efficiency is a field where every automobile is specializing, though there are many strategies to improve fuel efficiency the process doesn’t seem to end. Now this project talks about the method in which an auxiliary engine is used to enhance fuel efficiency. According to this technology an automotive vehicle having improved fuel economy is equipped with a drive system where this cruiser engine has a primary combustion engine and an auxiliary combustion engine.

The primary combustion engine is used to take the vehicle to its cruising speed or the speed at which the vehicle is fuel efficient to the core. Most of the vehicles are designed to have a maximum performance at this speed. It occurs between ascent and descent phases and is usually the majority of a journey. Cruising changes only at a constant speed, it ends as the vehicle approaches the destination like the descent phase of flight. At this stage once when the cruise speed is achieved the auxiliary engine gets activated.

It starts interacting like an automatic clutch system and powers the vehicle increases or maintains the cruise speed, when the primary engine is disconnected from the system and its speed is slowly decreased.

Here is
good news for all those who love to play endless games on Facebook.

Facebook
is also launching its own app store now to aid its users to find games and apps
of their choice easily online. This app center has already been launched in USA
and has got appreciable responses for the same, it provides services like
pininterest and popular games like draw something and bejeweled.

Facebook
will also recommend apps based on ratings from people who use it and the apps
that their friends are using. Right now this facility is not available for UK
users of Facebook but it promises that it will available to all of its users
soon in few weeks.

The social
network, which now has more than 900 million members, will also sell its own apps
through the store. The act is been considered as a shrewd one by technology
analysts because the App Centre will allow the social network to showcase the
best apps, based on its extensive social data, which allow users to login using
their Facebook details via Connect.

Moreover
Facebook also encourages people to create apps for it in a Paid-For format and
those who create apps solely for Facebook will have to share 30% of its price
with Facebook, but no charge is made while promoting the apps it will simply
list the apps and the place where they are available.

Announcing
“the app center last month”, Facebook engineer Aaron Brady said: “Success
through the App Centre is tied to the quality of an app. We use a variety of
signals, such as user ratings and engagement, to determine if an app is listed
in the App Centre. To help you [developers] monitor user feedback, we are also
introducing a new app ratings metric in Insights to report how users rate your
app over time.

“Well-designed
apps that people enjoy will be prominently displayed. Apps that receive poor
user ratings or don’t meet the quality guidelines won't be listed.”

Each app
will have a star rating, based on Facebook’s social graph, like Apple’s App
Store.

Title: RFID check out at shopping malls.
Departments: ECE, Telecommunication, Communication engineering.
Can be used for: Practical purposes, application in stores, engineering projects.

About the project:
This material is originally from here. This project about development of a new and unique idea. We all have faced this problem in big shopping malls and stores where we all normally go for home needs or clothing. Being consumers, we all must have the experience of standing in long queue for getting our bills paid. ( Yes! i am talking about that same irritating moment.) So, here are two intelligent engineering students Jigar Shah and Kevin Yang. Helping us to change the trend with the help of their engineering and tech skills. They have built an simple yet powerful tool with RFID concept to resolve this problem! claiming that this system will help customers pay their bills just upon arrival to the billing counters, increase in satisfaction quotient and more.

The way today's super markets/ stores and billing counters working is on the barcode scanner. The customer will have to take her products to the counter, where a person will scan the bar codes and do the billings. this is traditional and this old. According to this project the products are scanned and billed with RFID concept! This project utilizes these RFID tags to automate the checkout process by building a system which will read all product's tags signals (RFID) which will be placed in close to the antenna coverage. This will have a very positive impact on the cost management, security and reduce human errors.

Credits: Jigar Shah and Kevin Yang.

Download this project and you
can use this for education purposes: http://goo.gl/CBU3E

3D printing to build robotic dinosaur models

Paleontologists (people who study about prehistoric life) have decided to digitize ancient fossils instead of moulding them using plaster or pickaxes. Drexel university has announced recently that 3D printing will help them to create dinosaurs bones for further study. Researchers hope that models will allow them to study how dinosaurs moved and help create smaller robotic models of massive dinosaurs

Paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara has started doing 3D scans of giant dinosaur bones and, with a collaborator (is building scale models of complete skeletons). The process works by extruding very thin layers of resin or another material to slowly build up an object. A six-inch model of a dinosaur bone takes a few hours to print.
Since the printing process can be repeated in all sizes it will helpful for the researchers to create the models in different sizes for the museums.
Moreover Lacovara an associate professor from the same university has added that the small size models will help them to understand several activities of the dinosaurs like reproducing etc because it will be impossible for them to perform the experiment with a model that weighs in tons.
The Drexel team plans to build robotic models of giant sauropod dinosaurs with artificial muscles and tendons for their tests, drawing on work done on robotic fish. They hope to have a robotic dinosaur limb by the end of this year and a complete replica within two years.

Wonder how spaceships are made.

Have anyone of us thought about how the hell these spaceships are made, that is how this six legged athlete rover takes the shape of an actual working thing, which is huge transition from an engineer’s fantasy to an actual working thing… it involves a lot of creativity, technical knowhow etc. but mostly it involves, It takes the stones to dream up what no one ever thought possible, and the will to bring it to life. The creative force behind all the big thinking hangs out of NASA’s jet propulsion lab where the actual building process

Galactic brainstorm:
The jet propulsion lab has team of people called as the “A-team” which contains people from various and diverse background. This team gathers in a place called “left field” which is very flexible place that is similar to a pre-school and contains a lot of toys. Paired with a Principal Investigator (a.k.a. the main scientist), the A-Team brainstorms ideas to address the priorities of the Decadal Survey. The Decadal Survey, which takes place whenever NASA wants to reassess its research priorities for the next 10 years, compiles a list of dream projects from some of the world's best science minds. The most recent one came out in March of last year, and called for, among other things, a new Mars Sky Crane and a Saturn Ring Observer.

The A team comes with some wild ideas which are proposed to the next level of people called as the Team-X who will decide which idea is possible practically, The decision taken by Team X is really quick and dirty where nearly 30 people are crammed in a single room each one of them takes care of their own specialized area they keep the cost constrains in their mind before announcing the final decision.

Approval Matrix:
When the funding opportunity arises jet propulsion lab has to compete with so many other bodies like other NASA facilities and private companies. If the JPL succeds the the initial desing process takes place.

If JPL wins a contract to build something, it's time for its Mechanical Design Center to get involved. These engineers figure out how to make the concept a reality—what metals will work, what shape a joint should be, etc. Team X comes up with a sort of refined sketch; the MDC makes the CAD drawing where every bolt and beam is precisely represented. It would go something like this:

Scientists: "Get these 10 science instruments to Mars and make sure they're still working when they get there. Also we want to test in more locations than just were we land"
Engineers: "OK, then it should probably have wheels…"
Once the design is done then they have to perform something called as desing review where the team has to submit the project to a group of “greybeards” ie most intelligent people who have being performing this job for a very long time.

Building the Dream
If it passes the Final design review, it's off to the machine shops to make the prototype parts. Then the engineers put the product together and test the crap out of it to make sure it performs as everyone intended. If the prototype works and looks good, then the place best suited to make the part will be selected—either JPL's on-site machine shop or a local one. Nothing is mass produced; everything is a one off (maybe a two off).

The new solar cells from grass

Everybody knows the process called as photosynthesis in which the plant turns sunlight into energy, Mershin has found out a process called “photo system 1” where he has extracted the cells that perform the photosynthesis process. The photo system1 mainly consist of a protein called as chlorophyll.
In essence, Mershin has replaced the layer of silicon in conventional photovoltaic cells with slurry of photosynthesizing molecules. “It’s like an electric nanoforest,” he says.
Cloud computing is going to be one of the best techniques that an enterprise could use in the future. It is a way of providing up gradation to your computer not as a product but as a service. This technique may be used by anyone no matter if it is for your pc or for your business. In this technique a user need not know the physical location and configuration of the system that is providing him services like, data access, storage services, softwares etc. The concept of cloud computing satisfies the perpetual need of IT companies because it doesn’t need any investigations of new things that are developed, licensing of new softwares, training people for those s/w etc but we can simply add on the new features and provide additional capabilities. Learn more about cloud computing
