Holgates Holiday Parks

Now every week's a holiday at top parks group Lake District lovers can for the first time enjoy year-round holidays in South Cumbria following a council decision to allow a 12-months opening season for Holgates Holiday Parks.

Planners on South Lakeland District Council this week (29 September) gave the greenlight to the award-winning business to welcome guests all year round on three of itssix parks.

Until now, Silverdale Holiday Park and Far Arnside Holiday Park - both near Arnside- were required to close for six weeks during November and December.

A third park in the family-owned group, Silver Ridge Holiday Park in Hale near Milnthorpe, was forced to close for six weeks in December and January.

Now owners of the 630 caravan holiday homes and lodges on the three parks will beable to visit any time, and Silverdale Holiday Park's 70 touring pitches will also stay open all year.

According to company managing director Michael Holgate, the council's decision will provide a valuable boost to the area's tourism economy at a traditionally leaner,time of year:

Tourist board figures, said Michael, suggest that the extra opening weeks on thethree parks will produce an additional £160,000 of visitor spending per annum:

"Almost all of this cash will be fed directly into other local businesses in SouthCumbria, from shops and cafes to restaurants and visitor attractions," he said.

"Like our company, many of these enterprises are dependent on tourism for theirsurvival, and the extra income is sure to be welcomed at a time when visitors are often thinner on the ground.

"If this also helps to put the jobs these businesses sustain on a more securefooting, or even create new work opportunities, then that will be another benefit ofthis move.

"For our part, it will allow us to convert a number of seasonal jobs into full-timepositions, meaning that fewer staff will have employment gaps during the year,"added Michael.

He said that this had been an excellent trading year for the Holgates group whichwas started by his family just over fifty years ago in Silverdale as a single site for caravans and tents.

"Holiday patterns have changed dramatically over the years, and today we are lookingat a big increase in shorter breaks spread throughout the four seasons," saidMichael.

"That's why this decision to allow twelve-months opening is entirely consistent withwhat present-day holidaymakers expect - and can now find here in Cumbria.

"The council's economic development unit have been entirely supportive of our plans,and quick to acknowledge the economic and employment benefits they will bring," hecommented.

A number of parks in the Holgates group have won awards from national and regionalbodies for the quality of their facilities, and also their environmental achievements.

Silverdale Holiday Park was named by the AA as its 2011 park of the year, beatingover 3000 other UK parks to the prestigious title.

Holgates parks have also been praised by world-famous conservationist David Bellamyfor their many different initiatives which help to protect the natural world.

If you own a Caravan or Motorhome then you should be thinking about using a cover to keep it protected when not in use.

Brittany, the westernmost province of France, has long attracted holiday makers, particularly from Britain. Choosing a Sleeping Bag for Camping!

Camping, hiking and adventuring is a popular pastime for many thousands of people in the UK, and for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, it is almost certain that at some point in your life you will require the use of a Sleeping Bag.

Sleeping bags come in all shapes and sizes, and they vary in quality depending on where and when you'll be using it. There are high tech sleeping bags for use in extreme weather conditions and of course, more primitive styles which would be more suited to amateur campers.

If you're likely to be camping in warmer climes then lightweight compact sleeping bags are ideal, whereas if you're trekking to the North Pole you'll need a hi-spec professional sleeping bag which you can be cocooned within to keep the frost bite out.

There are various makes which cater for both summer and winter such as 'Coleman', ''Gelert' and 'Highlander', there are a vast array of sleeping bag brands to choose from on the market and you generally get what you pay for.

Things To Consider

Depending on when and where you will be using a sleeping bag you may consider the following criteria:

* Size & Shape - You need to consider your height and size, being stuck inside something which restricts your movement can be very uncomfortable. A mummy style bag may offer the most warmth, but if you're using the sleeping bag inside or in warm conditions a semi rectangular bag will offer far more movement inside and will be less claustrophobic.

* Storage - Will it need to be small and compact with a pouch for travelling light? Or will it be used in-doors where weight or packing away are not so important.

* Season Grade - Sleeping Bags are rated by season and degrees Celsius, it is always important to check with the supplier which will be most suitable for your need. As a rough guide: 1 will be for summers months (around 5 degrees Celsius), 2 will be for spring into summer (0 degrees Celsius), 3 will be for spring right through to autumn (around -5 degrees Celsius), 4 will be for winter (around -10 degrees Celsius) and 5 is rated for expeditions in colder climates (around -15 degrees Celsius).

* Outer Lining - Will it be used inside or outside, maybe in harsh weather conditions? Down sleeping bags are usually more expensive than synthetic sleeping bags and generally last longer, however, these would not be ideal for wet or damp conditions. For wet or damp conditions the ultralight shell fabrics are more suitable as they often possess a durable water-repellent coating.

* Inner Lining & Insulation - Will you require something that is light and breathable for really warm climates, or are you camping somewhere really cold where you will need to be cocooned inside? If you will be in dry but cold conditions then down sleeping bags are effective, they possess a high weight to warmth ratio (down insulation is measured by one ounce per cubic inch with 900 being the around the highest). For machine washable and damp resistant sleeping bags, those with synthetic insulation work best.

* Hood - Will your sleeping bag need a hood for really cold weather or to keep insects out? Other related features may be draft collars and draft tubes behind the zip, combined, these all act as effective draft insulators.

It is worth asking about sleeping bag accessories too, such as sleeping bag heaters for emergency situations, mats to help cushion the ground and insulate from cold beneath, travel pillows for comfort and sleeping bag liners for extra insulation in really cold weather.

We had a great show and received so much interest. Thank you so much for supporting us and coming to visit us on our stand.

The VW Campervan slippers could of been sold 2,000 times over and I think that next year we need to ask Animal to sponsor us and sell the slippers there.

We are going to sell key rings and broches as VW Campers, Caravans and Tents on the website in the next few months so please keep an eye out for these in our shop.

Olympic Games tickets will go on sale on Tuesday 15 March 2011, and Paralympic Games tickets will go on sale on Friday 9 September 2011.
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) will be working with the organisation Tickets For Troops as part of its Ticketshare scheme to provide up to 10,000 tickets for servicemen and women and their families.

The London 2012 Ticketshare scheme was launched last month and will see proceeds from the Prestige ticketing programme to donate tickets to worthy causes.

News of the link-up with Tickets for Troops follows confirmation that school children across the UK will receive tickets via the London 2012 Get Set education programme.

National Trust Camping Sites, Caravan parks and Properties

The National Trust have over 50 camping or touring sites located on National Trust land covering some of the most beautiful areas of the UK and are a great for exploring the National trust properties or walking. They have four lake side sites at the Lake District National Park, ideal for hiking and cycling, with exceptional views of the mountains and fells.

In the South West there are Costal Campsites in Devon and Cornwall take in the breathtaking costal walks of the surrounding coastlines showing off beautiful wildlife and beaches. Or for those who prefer a bit of glamour to your camping why not try out the wooden Camping Pods.

You will find that some of our sites welcome dogs and some are leased to the Caravan Club. Some National Trust areas allow (Wild Camping) as an example in the Lake District, but as a norm most National Trust areas do not allow this so please check before pitching your tent or caravan.

Safarai Tents

These are a must in the UK wanting to see these on all our parks as a glamping experience.

They are a version of the old Army safari Tents some are glamped up but others are as they were many years ago.

They have wooden floors, showers, toilets bunk beds so much room for all the family.

They are normally on small stilts. Some have even been put on water. They really are amazing.

A few scattered overgrown tourers in a field. A standpipe and, if you are lucky, a toilet and a shower or two. Not a description of your park, obviously, but it might have been just a few decades ago! Sometimes when I visit holiday parks, there is a fading photo on the wall depicting the early days. Managers and park owners are proud to remember their roots, perhaps starting with grandad or their parents. But they are also rightly pleased with the way things have developed, what they have achieved. How did we get from that ad hoc situation to what we have now... impressive infrastructure, expensive features, facilities galore and people luxuriating in static units or lovely lodges with more mod cons than at home?

It’s been a long journey, as those who have been running holiday parks (formerly called caravan sites) for any length of time will know. A route with much outlay on the way, putting in water, electricity and sewage, upgrading those facilities, providing improved access roads and parking, you know the rest. Hard decisions have been made as to what facilities to provide, depending on your target customer. Parks have over the years fallen into groupings ranging from the quiet retreat type with no added facilities and features, to the all-singing, all-dancing, often coastal, parks with entertainment, restaurants, bars and much more.

No matter where you fall in that range, you will always be thinking of the next development. At times and in some of the troughs of the economy, mere survival is the name of the game. However parks always have to look to the future beyond this year’s bottom line, to be ready for growth when it comes. Parks change hands and new owners have new ideas and often new finance. Where to target that finance is often a taxing question. A million is not a big figure in a holiday park, but it might be hard-won, and so asks to be spent carefully and appropriately. If you are juggling with smaller sums as many are, it is equally important that you make the developments which will grow your park into what you want it to be.

Wherever you fit in the spectrum of parks, you will want to achieve the best balance of investment and return, of realistic workloads and satisfied customers.

What have existing and potential holiday lodge or park home owners come to expect? There is not one answer to this question, as you will know. Except that all owners will want to feel happy and relaxed in their own major investment, and that is not down to how much you spend on your park, but the atmosphere you create. Parks which have the longest-standing residents are not necessarily those which have had the most lavished on them. However ease of access and parking, the right blend of facilities, all contribute to that sense of well-being.

Expectations include a clear and fair licence agreement. An approachable management and staff, who act promptly when there are problems. Friendly faces around the site. Beyond that, what people want varies tremendously. As I visit holiday parks in particular, I find lodge and holiday home owners often fiercely protective of one rule or other of their park. An example is those who are on parks where no-one is allowed to let out their unit. Residents say they are glad of this, as it means there is a control on who stays there, adding to the sense of community where everyone knows each other. On the other hand, on parks where letting is allowed, owners are often grateful that they can recoup some of the considerable expense put into buying their unit, and paying ground rent etc. Since you can’t please everyone, it is better not to try! But to attract the type of owner who wants your sort of park, and make it the best it can be of its kind.

At one time, those about to alight on a holiday park in their chosen area might have been just grateful to have a pitch for their unit. Now that expense dictates that they need to be in it for the long haul, they have many more questions. Good and clear answers to these, may mean you get the new resident. People expect to understand, perhaps more than in previous decades, what will be expected of them in return for their custom, and what plans the park has or has not for development and maybe expansion.

There is a move towards parks with few facilities, as illustrated by new lodge parks which are springing up around the country, and often have no bar or restaurant, and nothing else. Others have one or two well-chosen acitivites like a golf course or swimming pool, a pitch and putt or bowling green. Potential owners often cite peace and quiet as their main aim in buying a holiday home of whatever kind. Residential parks tend to have fewer facilities anyway, though they sometimes find it would be good to add a communal room at least, to create a sense of community.

Because there are so many local and regional variations, it would be foolish to try to generalise too much, or even to predict or describe trends. Tentatively I would say that as expectations have risen in terms of the interiors of holiday and homes, to the point where many are dripping with spec, so many owners have come to assume that lighting, roads and infrastructure will also be top notch. Some individual parks have struggled to keep up with this demand. However I would contend that there is also still a place for the more modest but well-kept park with simple roads and few features – and a lower ground rent.

As to the future, it is even more unpredictable in this industry. Signs are however that there will be an increasing emphasis on respect for the environment, as there is at home. A challenge for parks will be to ride with this wave, choose the best products and save themselves and their customers money in the long run.
