FUND RAISING WORKSHOP SCHEDULES

Offering another series of workshops for funding your community projects

Is your organization struggling to fund community projects? Are you worried about funding in these uncertain times? WSU Stevens County Extension Office is excited to announce a program that can help you find and write grants, fundraise, and mobilize community resources. “The first series of these workshops were an outstanding success – and we had a waiting list, so will be offering it again in two locations – Colville and Springdale. These educational workshops and intensive coaching sessions are for Stevens County nonprofit community organizations.” Debra Kollock, Stevens County Extension Director explains.

All workshops will be from 10:00 AM – Noon

Classes cost $10 per session and deadline to register is one week prior to the event. The classes do fill up quickly, so register as soon as you know you want to come. Your registration form and payment will reserve your place in the class. Register by sending your registration form (on attached flyer) and fee to WSU Stevens County Extension, 986 S Main, Suite D, Colville WA 99114.

These classes are designed for anyone associated with a nonprofit organization in the area that is ready to be actively involved in fundraising for the organization. They are not appropriate for business owners.

Gael Treesiwin, Grant and Fund Development Coach will coordinate the program with Krisan LeHew, WSU Horizons Community Coach. Gael is a seasoned trainer with over 25 years of experience helping organizations raise money. She is an AmeriCorps VISTA sponsored by Rural Resources Community Action working for the WSU Stevens County Extension office. Gael was a school teacher at the Evergreen School K-8 in Gifford WA and worked in social services in the tri-county area from 1973-1982. Since then she has provided leadership, fund development and capacity building for private, public, and nonprofit organizations around the country. “I am excited about this program because it is a chance for me to put a lifetime of experience to use helping a community I love,” Gael states. “People new to fundraising will get the skills and support to obtain grants and develop sustainable funding. Experienced fund raisers will learn new ways to use what they already know.

Hello Stevens County Asset Builders,

It's been a while since we've last met but I know you've been busy with your different projects. I'd like to meet with all of you to talk about what activities you've been involved with and what kind of projects we might want to take on this year. We also have some funding to send some of you to the Washington State Asset Building Conference in June.

Most of you responded to the Doodle that Monday, April 11th from 4:30-6:00 would be the best day to meet. We'll have the meeting at the newly remodeled community meeting space in Chewelah called the Livingroom. The address is W 101 Lincoln Ave. across the street from the middle school.

Please R.S.V.P. to me so that I can plan to have enough snacks. It will be important to have at least 2 people represent each Horizon Community.

Assets for Independence Announces Grant Application Deadlines and Spring Webinar Series for Prospective Grantees

The Assets for Independence (AFI) Resource Center invites all non-profit organizations, qualified state and local governments, community development credit unions, community development financial institutions, and other community-based organizations to apply for AFI grants this year. The 2011 grant application deadlines are: March 31, 2011 and May 25, 2011.

The AFI program provides funding to eligible organizations to provide Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) and related supportive services for qualified individuals in their area. Each participant opens an account and receives matched funding from the federal government and another source. The funds can be used for furthering education, purchasing a home, or starting a business. To date, nearly 80,000 families participating in AFI-funded projects across the nation have used their IDA savings to acquire a long-term asset and are on their way to long-term economic success. In addition to the IDAs, typical grantees also provide participants with money management training, assistance resolving credit and debit issues, and other supports.

Webinar Series for Prospective AFI Grantees

The AFI Resource Center will host a spring webinar series for prospective grantees and project partners in March through May 2011. The series include several webinars featuring an overview of the AFI program and application process; suggestions for developing strong projects; and strategies for building partnerships with community organizations for bigger impact. You will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive question and answer calls to receive answers regarding your specific project design questions.

New Gold Line bus service begins Sept. 8
Travel Washington’s Spokane-to-Kettle Falls bus line fills a gap

SPOKANE — Starting Wednesday, people in northeastern Washington will have a new option for travel between communities and major transportation hubs and on to just about anywhere else. The Gold Line will connect people in an area that hasn’t seen public transit service in decades.

With service set to begin Sept. 8, the Gold Line will be WSDOT’s latest Travel Washington intercity bus route. It will connect people from Spokane to Kettle falls along US 395, a 93-mile route with eight stops, including Spokane International Airport, Deer Park, Loon Lake, Chewelah, Addy and Arden.

“We’re excited to offer this new public transit service to communities in northeastern Washington, many of which have few if any options other than asking someone to drive them for getting to a bus station or an airport,” said WSDOT Intercity Program Manager Steve Abernathy. “The Gold Line fills a much-needed gap in our statewide public transportation network.”

The Gold Line is named after the region’s rich history of gold mining and industry.

The new service will include two round trips daily with one-way fares ranging $5-$25. Gold Line tickets will be available for purchase Wednesday at ticket office locations in:

• Spokane – Spokane Intermodal, 221 First Ave. at the Amtrak or Greyhound counters

• Chewelah – Chewelah Chamber of Commerce, 214 E Main Ave.

• Colville – Rural Resources Community Action, 956 S Main St.

• Kettle Falls – Kettle Falls Chamber of Commerce, Information Center, 425 W 3rd Ave.

Tickets will also be available for purchase online at: www.gold-line.us.

Travel Washington uses Federal Transit Administration funds and local matching funds from Greyhound Bus Lines to develop rural intercity bus routes. The Gold Line will be the program’s fourth route, joining other successful transit services, including:

• The Grape Line with stops between Walla Walla and Pasco since December 2007

• The Dungeness Line, connecting the Olympic Peninsula with Edmonds, Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport since September 2008

• The Apple Line with stops along its 160-mile route from Omak, through Wenatchee and on to Ellensburg since October 2008

Valley Community Fair Web Page!

The Valley Community Fair now has a web page. valleycommunityfair.tripod.com/ We are still tweaking it here and there as well as adding new info up until fair time. It contains everything the fair book has as well as registration forms, vet check slips, parade registration, coloring contest page and vendor applications ready to download. The Fair Association is also looking for items/services to donate towards the ticket (formerly button) drawing. We can also use all the volunteer help we can get. For information, donations or to volunteer, contact Theresa Carr @ 937-2635 or come to our monthly meetings on the first Monday of the month @ 6:30pm in the Grange building in Valley. The Fair is always the 2nd Saturday in August, August 14th!!

April 10: A NEWSTART Northeast Washington Recreation and Tourism Vision Workshop was held at the Chewelah Civic Center, Chewelah, WA

The workshop featured information sharing, dialogue, and other activities to enhance understanding of local recreation and tourism trends, needs, and opportunities. Participants developed themes, discussed opportunities, and defined roles locals can play in the delivery of a recreation and tourism vision. By working together on a common vision, communities in northeast Washington are combining efforts to maximize benefits from recreation and tourism.
This workshop was sponsored by the Northeast Washington Sustainable Tourism and Recreation Team (NEWSTART), partnering with Horizon communities, with representatives from Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens County.

Rural Reflections Summit Photos!

The Rural Reflections Summit held March 19-20th was a great instructional workshop to help rural areas gain knowledge and resources to enrich their communities.
Several workshops were taught to show rural communities how to bring more tourism as well as job opportunities to their home towns. A great time was had by those who attended this 2 day workshop. Horizons went all out to provide great instructors, food and entertainment as each community gleaned needed resources to take home with them. Much networking was also obtained with other communities along with great ideas from all. Join Horizons today to help Valley incorporate the many ideas that will help lift our town our of poverty.
Wenatchee High School's "Mariachi" band traveled to Moses Lake Saturday night to provide great entertainment for those who remained after dinner. It was a great time for all who were previleged to see this talent.

VIP MEETING – MARCH 9, 2010

Vice-President Traci Hatch opened the meeting in the absence of Leanne Perin. Members present were Rita Morris, Esther Koch, Shirley Kimball, Jackie Franks, Les & Jane Iverson, Alfred Reiner and Barbara Lael Reiner, Teresa Crane, Betty Holloway, Glenda Noggles, Robin Znetko from Loon Lake Motel and Kathlene Knight from Loon Lake and Krisan LeHew. While we introduced ourselves to the new guests Esther Koch ran home to print more photos for our Moses Lake Poster.

Teresa Crane volunteered to print our needed 3 X 5 cards to display at Moses Lake. They will show: Valley In Progress “VIP”, P O Box 111, Valley, WA, 99181 plus valleyinprogress@gmail.com and President Leanne Perin, Vice President Traci Hatch and Treasurer Jane Iverson’s phone numbers.

We were reminded of the Colors Workshop Training Tuesday, March 16th at the Valley Grange from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Presently there are about 25 people signed up for this workshop.

Treasurer Jane Iverson announced that we received our first $1,500 from Horizons and that we need to open a VIP bank account. After some discussion a motion was made by Betty Holloway and seconded by Teresa Crane to have President Leanne Perin, Vice President Traci Hatch and Treasurer Jane Iverson as our VIP signers on the bank account. Each check will require 2 signatures. The motion to open a bank account at Chewelah’s American West Bank was made by Betty Holloway and seconded by Les Iverson since American West has been very supportive of Horizon projects and communities. This motion passed by majority.

Krisan reported that grants were obtained for the WSU Horizons Program for the year so she can continue to work with us for which we are all greatful.

The Huckleberry will be discussed and planned at a later meeting leaving more time to complete our poster.

The 1023 form to request our 501c3 status needs to be filled out and submitted. Jane, Krisan, Jackie, Betty & Glenda have some experience in completing these forms and will be available to help, but it was decided to bring in Scott from WSU Extensions to help get this form properly completed and ready for the boards approval.

The Tourism Workshop was very enlightening and well attended by our people. Jane Iverson took extensive notes and has a few copies to share with those who were unable to attend.

We were Reminded about an upcoming Grant Writing and Fund Raising workshop to be held Friday, April 2 at Chewelah Peak Learning Center from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Those interested in attending were encouraged to sign up with Krisan.

Community problems of drugs and alcohol along with a review of the Top 10 Issues of concern from our Community were discussed. Also the progress we have seen since we started the Horizons training was discussed along with numerous improvements around town. Areas still needing improvement were cleaning up litter/garbage and more signs to direct travelers into Valley for services. A new mode of transportation through our community is in the planning in the near future, running from Kettle Falls to Spokane.

We then adjourned to work on our Community Poster for the Moses Lake Conference. After some coordinating and arranging, it was decided more supplies were needed to make it look nice. Some photos would be reprinted and some colored paper for backgrounds was needed. Several volunteered to meet at the Valley Café to finish the poster this Friday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m.

Regional Tourism Workshop Hugh Success!

The Horizon workshop held March 5th at the Chewelah Civic center was well attended. Nearly 100 people from various counties attended but about 90% came from Stevens Co. The workshop provided great ideas and tools for recruiting tourism to our region. The Key note speaker was Judy Walden, a specialist in rural tourism development. George Sharp from the WA. Dept. of Commerce also presented many ideas for bringing people to our region listing what kinds of things tourists are looking for. A great lunch was enjoyed by all who attended and several drawings were held for wonderful gift baskets. The Valley VIP's were especially encouraged as everything presented in the workshop confirmed & encompassed our vision for a "Huckleberry Fest". We are encouraged that a Huckleberry Fest could be a hugh success in bringing tourism to our community. We would also need to make some of those items always available at local businesses so people will come to know Valley, WA is known for wonderful and unique gifts made from huckleberries.

Dear AAUW Members, Horizons Members and Friends:

The Colville Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Colville Horizons are very happy to be sponsoring a Women’s Health Forum next Thursday, February 25, 2010, 6:00 pm at the Rendezvous Theater in the Colville Community College. The Women’s Health Forum is a biannual event that is free of charge and open to the general public.

A panel of four local physicians will be discussing current issues concerning the health of women. This year’s panelists will be: Jenna Collins, who will discuss bio-identical hormones, Leslie Waters, who will discuss the recent controversy surrounding the timing and frequency of screening exams, Angela Ball, and Theresa Zilka. (Note: Dr. Gary Baldwin, who had previously been scheduled to attend, had to cancel.) Each panelist will have 10-15 minutes to discuss a topic of her choosing. Panelist will then have the opportunity to answer written questions submitted by audience members.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this exciting and informative event. Also, please spread the word to other interested women!

VIP Meeting Notes - February 16th

VIP’s met in Springdale prior to Dr. Donna Beegle Video. Those present were President Leanne Perin, VP Traci Hatch, Treasurer Jane Iverson, Communications Esther Koch, Treasurer Glenda Noggles as well as board members Teresa Crane, Alfred Reiner, Jackie Franks, Helen Hubbs, Les Iverson, Betty Holloway and WSU Ext. Leader Krisan LeHew.

Glenda announced that the Valley Food Pantry will be operating separately from the VIP’s and have filed for their own State UBI, Federal ENI and are in the process of filing the 501c3. They learned in the process of getting established if they operate under VIP all control (decision making and money) would be handled by VIP’s, which was not the desired result for change.

Debra from WSU Extension Office emphasized upcoming workshops such as the Grant Writing session 4/5/10 at Chewelah Peak Learning Center and Tourism Conference in Chewelah 3/5/10.

Traci Hatch reported she is stuck on filing for the EIN and will be getting help to get this completed. She also reported Valley In Progress has an e-mail address valleyinprogress@gmail.com

A Super video with Dr. Donna Beegle was enjoyed by those present. She was talking about working with folks in poverty and giving them the tools and challenges they need to succeed and climb or develop the desire to climb out of poverty.

A short meeting with the Springdale COG’s then followed to brainstorm possible community projects that could bring the communities together. Nothing definite was developed. It was noted that Rita Morris (Valley Fuel) is brainstorming the use of their white building for a Farmers Market and nearby organic garden.

We were reminded that March 5th is the Tourism Workshop at Chewelah Civic Center.

We were informed that the government has big demands on local growers and farmers regarding the safe handling of foods and that people need to be educated regarding the safety requirements.

Georgia from Springdale decorates the Depot each month and encouraged us to come join their Wednesday Senior potluck from 12:00 to 4:00 each week. They also play bingo and have prizes. Thursdays they have a game of 10,000 Dice (good family fun game). Traci Hatch announced that there is a BUNCO game at the Valley Café the 2nd Thursday of each month. Further details can be obtained at the Valley Café. Also, Springdale has a “Saturday Night Dinner and Movie” for which all are welcome.

Krisan reminded us that she needs photos for her slide show of Valley improvements.

Jackie Franks told us that Springdale & Valley need K-3 year size underwear and long pants, gloves and tennis shoes for school situations.

KYRS 92.3 is a new radio station in our area and will have a tower on Stranger Peak. It will cover Northeast Washington News and local events.

Debra announced that the WSU President would be in Colville for a day in June and wants a presentation on Horizon’s activities and projects.

Krisan told us the Colors Training was available in March and it was decided that it would be at the Grange with Food Pantry workers participating. The exact date to be determined soon.

VIP Meeting notes Feb. 2, 2010

VALLEY IN PROGRESS MEETING - FEBRUARY 2, 2010 AT 5:00 p.m. at Valley Café

Those Present were: President Leanne Perin; VP Traci Hatch; Sec. Glenda Noggles; Treas. Jane Iverson, Communications Esther Koch; Board Members Betty Holloway, Alfred Reiner, Teresa Crane, Les Iverson; as well as Rita Morris, Laura Fjelstad, Shirley Kimball, Krisan LeHew, and Helen Hubbs.

The minutes from the January 18, 2010 VIP meeting were reviewed and it was noted that our vote to approve the Articles of Incorporation and By Laws had been omitted from the meeting minutes.

Krisan reminded us of upcoming events:

2/16/10 VIP Meeting with COGS at Springdale Depot, 4:00 p.m., Bring a sack lunch. Speaker via
Video will be Donna Beagle talking about generational poverty and teaching kids in crisis poverty. We will also be brainstorming with COGS about possibly working together on upcoming community events.

3/5/10 Tourism Workshop at Chewelah Civic Center from 8:00 to 4:30 p.m.

3/19 & 20/10 Rural Reflections Summit: Building a Stronger Washington at Big Bend Community College, Moses Lake. Valley In Progress will be graduated from the Horizon Program at this meeting and qualify for our seed money to build a better community. Those representing VIP will be Esther Koch, Laura Fjelstad, Teresa Crane, Helen Hubbs, Traci Hatch, Leanne Perin and Glenda Noggles.

Our Certificate from the Secretary of State showing our UBI Number which is the start of making the VIP’s an
official 501C3, Non-Profit Organization was presented.

Our Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws were reviewed item by item to be sure everything was exactly as
needed. There was some discussion about the number of hours required for voting Members each month.
Krisan will check the rules and be sure it is correct.

Jane Brown was elected as Treasurer. Prior treasurer, Glenda Noggles will soon be serving as the Treasurer for
the newly formed Valley Food Pantry which will be operated by the Valley Community and as a part of
Valley In Progress.

The need to have a Web site was discussed and tabled to the next meeting.

Please delete the Kistenmacher e-mail address on the address list handed out at this meeting as it is not correct.

The newly formed Valley Food Pantry will need to present their organizations plans with the VIP’s in order to
operate as an official part of Valley In Progress. Board Members will be notified of this meeting in the next few
days as the Valley Food Pantry will finalize their organizations operating procedures at a meeting Monday,
February 8th and will need final approval from the VIP Board to operate as a branch of VIP.

We were reminded of our next meeting at the Springdale Depot 2/16/10 and to remember to bring a sack lunch,
after which the meeting was adjourned.

Women’s Health Forum Set for February 25

The Colville Branch, American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Colville Horizons will sponsor a Women’s Health Forum, Thursday, February 25, at 6:00 pm at the Institute for Extended Learning’s Rendezvous Theater, 985. S. Elm, Colville. This free biannual event is open to the public, and both men and women are invited to attend.

According to Sandy Moore, PhD, President, Colville Branch, AAUW, this year’s Forum will feature a panel of local physicians who will address current women’s health issues. Slated panelists and their topics include Jenna Collins, D.O., on bio-identical hormones, Leslie Waters, M.D., on the controversy surrounding timing and frequency of women’s screening examinations, and Gary Baldwin, M.D., on gynecological issues. Panelists will make brief presentations and then answer questions submitted by the audience.

“Colville Horizons is delighted to partner with AAUW in presenting this exciting and informative event,” said Sue Poe, CFP, Horizons chair. “Our organization is committed to combating poverty and we believe that prosperity begins with good health for all.”

Krisan & Traci have put together the needed information to file for VIP as a Corporation. However, there a few items that we as a group need to complete and or decide on so we need to meet Tuesday, February 2nd at 5:00 p.m. at the Valley Store.

Good News we have completed the online filing and have obtained our UBI Number which entitles us to operate as a non-profit organization.
