Newlywed Canadian trapped in 'hellhole' Dominican jail

A newlywed Ontario bride is frantically trying to free her husband and his cousin from a Dominican Republic jail "hellhole"— and she says she's left doing it with next to no help from the Canadian government.
“I was with Nick maybe eight hours before they took him from me,” Stacey Vernon, 31, told CBC News in Hamilton. “It's awful. We saved every penny to make this a wonderful experience and now we can't even look at our wedding photos.”
Nick Miele, 34, and his 18-year-old cousin Ben Costantini, both of Stoney Creek, Ont., have been behind bars since the early morning hours of May 28 — just hours after Miele and Vernon said “I do” at the Bahia Principe Esmeralda resort in Punta Cana.
Miele is facing months in jail after a fight erupted on his wedding night that his bride says he had no part in.

The trouble started in the 24-hour buffet line around 2:30 a.m., after the reception had wound down. Vernon was in line with one of her friends. “We were talking about the nacho cheese and how they must water it down — and the next thing I knew I was bashed into the buffet table.”
A fight had broken out between two men not in the wedding party, and they fell into Vernon while she was waiting in line. She hit her head on the glass above the buffet and had the wind knocked out of her when she hit the floor. But the men didn't stop fighting.
“I had bruises all over the place because I was getting kicked and punched with them on top of me.”
Her new husband hauled the men off her and got her to safety, getting some blood on him in the process. One of the men violently assaulted the other, she says, before jumping the resort fence. Resort staff carted off the injured man.
Vernon's wedding party stayed to give statements to the police, and Miele and Constantini were arrested, she says.

im guessing that the pc in Ottawa and nb don't want to be in power anymore. after all the scandals and transparency (not) , where the heck has are money gone we have lost how many jobs with more debt something just does not add up...

our health care need re enforced not dropped, and the fracking not to many people want it if there going to jail over protesting.....

im very surprised the government is not going around with personal body guards in also surprised no one has tried an attempt someones life at point if someone is dying of something the government wont help with the inexpensive drug.....

maybe if a politician gets taken out there might be a thought in there head next time they pass a bill?????

i might vote green peace this time, liberals screwed us last time the pcs screwed us this time ndp screwed nova scotia why not give someone never in office the chance??

Health Canada blocks dying patients from access to drug

Two lung disease specialists are accusing Health Canada of shortening some patients' lives, by denying them access to an inexpensive, relatively harmless drug not sold in Canada.
“I am appalled and angry that a federal agency that we fund through our taxes would deny Canadian citizens who are dying of a treatable, infectious disease potentially life-saving medication,” said Dr. David Forrest, of Nanaimo, B.C.
In previous years, Health Canada granted several patients special access to the drug, called clofazimine. The doctors said that approach has suddenly changed, for no good reason.

“We had a process in place that was working, for 20 years or so, and now all of a sudden we’re running up against a brick wall,” said Dr. Stephen Field, from Calgary.

Drug is last option

The patients have a bacterial lung infection called Mycobacterium avium complex, known as MAC, but are ‘multi-drug resistant.’
"It’s a very uncomfortable way to slowly pass away," said Field.

One of Forrest’s patients, Dean Robertson, has been treated with several drugs since 2010, but none worked. Forrest wants to give him clofazimine — which has been widely used for leprosy — to treat his lung disease.
“If I don’t get this drug I am going to possibly die from this infection,” said Robertson, who was forced to stop working because of his illness.
Clofazimine is widely available in developing countries, but is not approved for sale in the U.S. or Canada, because the drug company Novartis hasn’t applied for approval.
Forrest said clofazimine has worked very well for one of his other patients with MAC, who was given special approval to get the drug by Health Canada earlier.
Robertson said it's his last option. “I’m 57 but I feel like I am 90. It’s just I can’t walk or stand very long. The fatigue is unbelievable.”
He said another drug he tried caused him to lose his sight, temporarily, which forced him to stop taking it.
“I went blind. I woke up one morning … and my vision was gone.”

at 10:29 AM ETThis isn't the only time this has happened. There is a very common and cheap drug out there, that completely cures some forms of cancer in a relatively short time period. The pharma companies will not allow this form of use for the drug because it was not created for this purpose and has not been tested for this use, and the pharma companies refuse to do that testing because they will not make any money off of the drug, especially as they don't hold the patten to the drug. They want us to use the very expensive, multi-drug approach to cancer, with minimal success, so that they can make the maximum profit from those drugs, which may have to have a second course to put the disease into remission.

When are people going to wake up to realize that no one cares about them and their problems unless they can make some kind of profit from it? Its the way our world now works....

After two years of study and discussion, the federal government has finalized new rules for medical marijuana and granted a reprieve to pharmacists who opposed the rules in their draft form.
Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq rolled out the regulations today for formal publication in the Canada Gazette on Wednesday.
Under the new regime, the government will no longer produce or distribute medical pot and medical marijuana users will no longer be allowed to grow the product at home.
Health Canada said since the medical marijuana program was introduced in 2001, it has expanded to 30,000 people from the original 500 authorized to use the product.
"This rapid increase has had unintended consequences for public health, safety and security as a result of allowing individuals to produce marijuana in their homes," the department said in a news release.
"Under the new regulations, production will no longer take place in homes and municipal zoning laws will need to be respected, which will further enhance public safety."
Under the new regulations, the government will allow patients to buy prescribed amounts only from licensed growers who will be required to meet strict conditions.

Yeah, right. My husband tried to get it from an authorized dealer for his chronic and constant pain. It would have cost us almost $900 a month. This is a case of extreme stupidity. We have never smoked nor have we done drugs but not allowing someone access to something like this is ludicrous. I notice there is never anything said about alcohol. Green Party backs non-violent anti-shale gas protests

Green party Leader David Coon is defending actions of anti-shale gas protesters this week, who blocked a truck owned by a contractor hired by SWN Resources Canada and disrupted the company's plans to carry out seismic testing.
SWN Resources has run into resistance from some protesters in Kent County as it prepares to conduct seismic testing in eastern New Brunswick.
Coon said the Green party is against violence but supports other actions to stop seismic testing in New Brunswick.

"Actions have absolutely got to be non-violent and that's where we draw the line. Non-violent civil disobedience has a long and storied history in Canada and around the world,” Coon said.

New Brunswick’s unemployment rate dropped to 10.5 per cent in May as the economy added 3,700 jobs, according to Statistics Canada.
The jobless rate dropped to 10.5 per cent from 10.9 per cent in April, which is the 10th consecutive month the unemployment has been stuck in double digits.
There were 351,700 jobs in the province last month compared to 348,000 in April. The rise in jobs was fuelled mainly by part-time work. An additional 2,600 part-time jobs were created in May and 1,100 people landed full-time jobs.
The province's economic picture may look impressive compared to April, but New Brunswick has 4,500 fewer jobs than May 2012.
New Brunswick’s job growth in May came as Canada generated 95,000 jobs in the same period, its best job creation month since 2002.
The unemployment rate in New Brunswick’s two largest cities increased in the last month, however.
The unemployment rate in Moncton stood at 6.9 per cent in May compared to 6.7 per cent in April. Meanwhile, Saint John’s jobless rate increased to 10.2 per cent from 9.2 per cent in April.
The unemployment rate was also stuck above 10 per cent in three of five economic regions in the province.
The Campbellton-Miramichi region’s jobless figure was 19.7 per cent in May compared to 19.1 per cent a year ago.
Edmundston-Woodstock had an unemployment rate of 12.3 per cent, which was largely unchanged since the same time last year, and Saint John-St. Stephen’s unemployment rate was 11.2 per cent, which is up from 9.6 per cent in May 2012.
Moncton-Richibucto’s unemployment rate stood at 9.5 per cent in May, an increase over the same month last year when the rate was 8.2 per cent.
The lowest unemployment rate in the province was found in the capital region. The jobless figure in Fredericton-Oromocto was 7.5 per cent in May compared to 7.3 per cent in May 2012.

X-ray technician suspended for refusing hepatitis vaccine

Some people in Doaktown are fighting the suspension of the community's X-ray technician, who refused to get a hepatitis B vaccination.
Janet Hughes says she previously accepted mandatory vaccines for measles, tetanus and whooping cough.
But she refused the hepatitis B injection because she believes she was infected with hepatitis C when she was younger and feared the vaccine might cause a negative reaction.
New Brunswick's Horizon Health Network suspended her without pay three months ago.
Hughes contends it's a human rights issue.
"I've been in the X-ray business for 48 years. And now all of a sudden they tell me I'm a burden, or a health risk or something? It just doesn't make sense," she said

Shale gas industry could provide needed jobs, economist says

An economic consultant in Moncton says shale gas development may be something a lot of New Brunswickers oppose, but with unemployment hitting 20 per cent of people in the northeastern part of the province, it has to be considered.
David Campbell says unless major projects are found, people will have to continue leaving New Brunswick to find work.
"We have a number of opportunities in the mining sector, in oil and gas, and I know these are controversial sectors, but on the other hand, they hold tremendous potential for job creation, good wages and good economic benefits from these jobs," he said.
"And I think government has to take seriously the opportunities in mining and particularly in the area of shale gas development."
Campbell says it's not just important for people living in northeastern New Brunswick.

Could generate more than $7B

Energy Minister Craig Leonard has said it's too soon to speculate how many jobs the shale gas industry could create in the province because so much about the industry is still up in the air.
The Conference Board of Canada has estimated natural gas production will create 129,000 jobs per year across the country, but New Brunswick was not part of that outlook because exploration and development regulations were still in the works.

The headline calls him an "economist", but he is not an economist (ie someone with a higher degree in economics). According to his bio, which is easy to find on the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce website, he has an MBA from Liberty University [yes, crackpot Jerry Falwell's 'university' in Virginia] and "has completed economic development-related coursework at the University of Waterloo and the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government", whatever that means.

Two Fredericton High School students are pushing the Department of Education to back off of a plan to scrap an advanced mathematics course.
Seschu Iyengar, a Grade 11 student, and William Gertler, a Grade 12 student, say they are upset about the provincial government’s decision to eliminate the high-level class.
The special class allows students to work at a faster pace and finish three math courses in two semesters.
Iyengar said students were not given “fair warning” about the program being dropped. He said he was one of about 50 students who wanted to enroll in the program next year.
Students at Fredericton High School found out recently the provincial government had eliminated an advanced mathematics course. (CBC)
“The Department of Education has now cancelled that program and they haven’t been incredibly clear about the reasoning,” he said.
“But they have now cancelled the program and are starting to follow a larger policy of taking out programs like this, more advanced courses.”

Gertler said the students taking this course are among the top-performing students in the school and the course has an average mark of 94 per cent.

at 12:41 PM ETI graduated from FHS in 2007 and UNB in 2012. I can count on one hand the number of classes/teachers I had that ACTUALLY prepared me for university. This advanced math course (in the hands of a very, very capable physics teacher, I might add) is at the top of my list.

It is the only course in the entire curriculum that is deliberately structured to challenge its students like a first year university math class. The invaluable role of such a class should be obvious to the Education Minister.

Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) representative Norma Robinson said they're worried about recent layoffs and don't want any more cuts to the front line workers.

Later, inside the legislature, Alward told reporters he wasn't bothered by the protesters being so angry.
He said it's not fun to be yelled at, but he considers it important.
"I've had a chance to visit other places that don't have that same respect for rights, for human rights, that Canadians do. That's something that I value, so I would never shy away from it," he said.
"They weren't very happy and they wanted things to stay the same. Unfortunately, the world around us isn't staying the same. It's changing very quickly."
Alward said some of the cuts have allowed the government to divert money to reduce wait times for some surgeries, which he contends proves cutting in some areas can improve health services.
The wait for an electrocardiogram, for example, has been cut to one week from 20 weeks, he said.

Its the only major driver of healthcare costs which is why the Feds needs to anty up their share according to *AGE* not simply per capita. Specifically at least by calculating people over age 65 and attribute at least 80% of revenues on that population. The province also has to budget according to aging. If we have more people over age 65 we should have more budgeted towards them than young healthy people for whatever services they consume.

The gov isnt being honest here. It will reduce access to care and services if it cuts any deeper. Whining we pay 160$ more per patient per year in a disparate population vs a concentrated city is also not an honest assessment. Its to be expected that we will need more institutions that are far apart. This is a province not a city.

In my opinion this does not save the healthcare system money it costs...severances, higher salaries etc...

The money saved could be used to help people and potentially save lives.

A provincial politician pointed me to a Fraser Institute study that gave a cost analysts of nearly $100,000,000 annually for French integration and support in NB. I was also told that given the way that tax dollars are entrenched into the systems that government does not and cannot provide a total cost of bilingualism, that the costs could very well be much higher than $100,000,000. Basically the bureaucrats continue to take tax dollars, pour them into this bilingual waste can and not one politician can give NBers a concrete sum of money that is used to basically give bilingual services to less than 10% of the provinces unilingual French. Total irresponsible and possibly illegal as government is not being honest and derelict in its duty to the public. Call, write or visit your MLA today. Do not take no for an answer and demand that he/she take you seriously.

RCMP arrest 3 anti-shale gas protesters in Kent County

The RCMP say officers arrested three of roughly 100 protesters who attended an anti-shale gas rally near Saint Paul.

The protesters blocked seismic testing trucks from advancing, held up anti-shale gas signs and there was traditional First Nations drumming and singing.

Doubts about ability to enforce

NDP Leader Dominic Cardy, however, is skeptical.
"We have serious doubts about the government's will and means to enforce them," he said in a statement.
The province has a "sad history" of Conservative and Liberal governments failing to enforce their own conditions, said Cardy.
"The Conservatives broke their own rules on wetlands protection and they joined hands with the Liberals in investing in tobacco companies to fund public pensions," he said.
Cardy is also concerned the new rules may only apply to new oil and gas developments, not the existing 24 wells across the province.
Two or three companies are planning exploratory work this year, with some test wells possible in the next couple of years, according to the environment minister.
The next step for the government will be to release royalty rates — what companies will have to pay to the government for the gas they extract

NB Power will be raising power rates for all of its residential and industrial customers by two per cent on Oct. 1, the company announced on Monday.
The rate increase ends the three-year rate freeze instituted by the Alward government following the 2010 election.
NB Power is permitted to hike electricity rates by two per cent annually for the next two years without being forced to defend its rates in front of the Energy and Utilities Board. That provision was included in the new Electricity Act, which is being debated in the legislative assembly.
“Even with the positive financial results of the past few years, this rate increase is required to address the impact of rising fuel costs, and to contribute to our goal of reducing the debt of the corporation by $1 billion over the next 10 years,” said Gaëtan Thomas, NB Power’s president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

Drivers digging deeper to pay gas taxes

New Brunswick drivers are paying an extra 18 per cent more in gas taxes compared to three years ago, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
The national organization released a new report showing how much money provincial governments are collecting in gasoline taxes.
Kevin Lacey, the Atlantic director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said working families are paying more money each time they head to the pumps.
“As families hit the road for summer vacations, they will have to dig a little deeper to pay the taxman,” Lacey said in a statement.
In the report released on Monday, the federation said an average New Brunswick driver is paying $624.99 in gas taxes each year, up from $528.20 in 2010.
The New Brunswick government estimates it will collect $243 million in gasoline and motive fuel taxes in 2013-14.

Our tax dollars are being siphoned like gas out of those programs to fund the new, upgraded, useless legislation known as bilingualism. The enhanced legislation is fuelled by those who hold the power of our government. Just about every senior government position is held by a francophone pumping the life out of NB. Bilingualism costs $2.4 billion a year, with $868 million of that spent by the provinces (and rest spent by Ottawa). This is where a tank of money is going. NBers are experiencing an emptying our young workers and their families migrating to jobs outside the province and yet this government like the last is fully focused on the bilingual gauge of NB, ensuring it too does not empty. Sadly, we may have nothing but bilingual fumes left in NB as every public service job and many private sector businesses are forced to adapt to new language laws. Signage will be required in both languages and government will take one step deeper into our lives. This isn't about language, this is about absolute rule in the disguise of duality.

Why does a community of 100 people have to change for 20 people who happen to move to town in order to access work in a nearby city? Government is entrenching language deeper into our lives, so much so that it borders oppression.

As gas prices raise, those with government automobiles and a gas card are laughing all the way to the bank. It's costing the Gov't more $$ for their "fleets" such as NB power trucks, delivery, gov't employees travel and expenses. They claim that they are bringing in over $200 million from this tax revenue, but their own costs are exponentially higher. It would save everyone money if they decreased the tax, lowered the cost of fuel and delivery, but implemented a $4 road toll coming and going at the Edmundston exchange. Not only would they collect $, they would employ people. Business operating within NB would find a cost savings and subsequently make this province more attractive corporately.

Health Canada plans to no longer allow individuals to grow marijuana for medical use, with all approved grow operations instead being produced by larger industrial growers.
Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said the agency is moving to eliminate personal grow-ops that will not require inspection.
"We are moving forward in looking at medical marijuana in terms of how any other prescription drug is accessed," the minister said.
More than 15,000 people are licensed to grow medical marijuana in Canada, but Health Canada has no record of staff ever inspecting any of the growers, CBC News has learned.
Burlington resident John Fattore has ankylosing spondylitis, a disease that causes inflammation of the joints between the spinal bones.
It has destroyed his feet and makes him experience immense pain. He spent years bedridden, taking OxyContin and Percocet to ease the pain.
"It will kill him," said his wife Brenda of the disease.
By chance, Brenda met Hamilton's Derek Pedro, a Health Canada designated medical marijuana grower and user, at a doctor's office. He recommended her husband try it.

The changes are part of "phase 2" of the government's overhaul of the family reunification category of immigration. New applications for the program have been on hold since 2011 in order to cut down on a massive backlog that resulted in wait times of eight years.
Kenney said applications will resume Jan. 1, 2014, and will be limited to 5,000 per year. The applications will still take years to process because of the ongoing backlog. By the end of the year, the backlog is estimated to be around 80,000 applications.

Kenney said that about 25,000 parents and grandparents will be admitted as permanent residents in 2013 and he expects that level to continue in coming years.
Kenney said the number of older immigrants allowed into Canada must be limited because of the burden they place on the health-care system and other social resources. A set of grandparents could cost the system $400,000, he noted.
"We want to permit a responsible degree of family reunification at the amount we can afford," he said.

at 3:56 PM ETI fully support controlled immigration, and I don't support the CPC or agree with Jason Kenney very often, but I think he's right on the money here. People who can support themselves and their extended families through either their own income or via taxation should be welcome, however those who would take advantage of state generosity without any means of support should remain in their home country. They are not immigrants so much as refugees, and therefore should apply as such.

at 4:00 PM ETIf a family wants to stay together, then don't come to Canada unless you are wealthy enough to pay for everybody. Why should taxpayers subsidize non-taxpaying people's health and welfare? Personally, I don't think anyone over 50 should be allowed to immigrate to Canada. It costs way too much and there's no benefit to the nation. why should Canadians be forced to compete for health services and old age home spaces with people who didn't contribute anything to the country? It is time for a revolution over this issue.

like i said before anyone who knows how to fraud the system will, and if your in a place of power you will x2 and they need to remove themselves from this place, but wait if they frauded there country they would not have the common sense to step down!!!

The audits conducted on the living and travel expenses claimed by three senators reveal some surprising information about how much they co-operated with the auditors, and what exactly they claimed.
A Senate sub-committee ordered senators Mike Duffy, Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau to repay tens of thousands of dollars after an independent auditor, Deloitte, examined their expenses and travel.
Duffy has already repaid $90,000, and Senator David Tkachuk, who heads the committee that produced the reports, said Thursday that Duffy's case is "closed."
After receiving the audits, the Senate committee found that the three senators' primary residences were in Ottawa, and not in the places outside the capital where they said they lived to be eligible to charge expenses for accommodation near Parliament Hill.
The Deloitte audits were made public Thursday. Here's some of what they revealed:

Co-operation with auditors

Conservative Senator Mike Duffy did not co-operate with Deloitte auditors. He did not provide any documentation. Deloitte had to piece together Duffy's whereabouts using records for his Senate-issued cellphone and Senate-issued American Express corporate credit card
Both Independent Senator Patrick Brazeau and Liberal Senator Mac Harb provided Deloitte with copies of their bank account statements, income tax returns and, in Harb's case, credit card statements. Brazeau does not have any personal credit cards.
Brazeau and Harb also provided either lease or mortgage documents about the homes they claimed were their primary residences.

Travel claims

The Senate allows 55 cents per kilometre for road trips.
Harb charged $11,000 for trips between Ottawa and a home in Westmeath, 145 kilometres from Ottawa.
Brazeau charged $2,800 for trips to and from Maniwaki, 135 kilometres from Ottawa, although Deloitte agrees there were 25 trips for which Brazeau did not claim expenses.
Duffy's trips to P.E.I were by plane and Deloitte does not provide details. Deloitte does note that in the summer Duffy drove to P.E.I. and back and charged driving expenses. The amount isn't specified, but a round trip between P.E.I. and Ottawa is more than 3,000 kilometres.

Accommodation

The Senate pays about $30 per day for senators to stay in secondary residences they might own in Ottawa, if their primary residence is somewhere else.
Duffy charged $15,000 for the suburban Ottawa home he purchased before he was appointed a senator.
Harb charged $15,000 because of the house in Westmeath, Ont., that he bought in 2010. He’s been a senator since 2003, and lived in Ottawa before he moved to Westmeath, just outside Pembroke, Ont.
Brazeau charged $31,000 for leasing a house in Gatineau, Que. Senators can choose to rent, or stay in a hotel, but unlike hotel bills, both rental and private home costs can be charged every day of the year because the accommodation must be available for the senator to use at any time.

If you have nothing to hide you cooperate with auditors not stonewall them. at 5:44 PM ETThere are two reasons Duffy would refuse to cooperate with Deloitte's audit by providing documentation: (a) he didn't keep any records (which is suggestive in itself) or (b) the records would indicate that he had claimed expenses to which he was not entitled. They may even have brought to light fraudulent claims that we're not yet aware of. Duffy's lawyer's attempt to mitigate his clients lack of cooperation by claiming he had offered to meet with Deloitte is a smoke screen. Whether Duffy met with Deloitte or not he could still have supplied documentation of his activities. He chose not to.

Also by refusing to cooperate he has forced Deloitte to try to piece together his whereabouts using his Senate cell phone and corporate credit card records. Its likely that this made Deloitte's investigation more difficult and thus lengthier. Naturally taxpayers are on the hook for the investigation and the report.
