Bollywood Actor Salman Khan acquitted in deadly 13-year-old hit-and-run case

An Indian high court overturned Bollywood actor Salman Khan's conviction in a 13-year-old hit-and-run case, thereby scrapping a lower court's sentence of five years in jail.

Khan 49, who was accused of driving drunk in 2002 and ramming into a group of homeless people sleeping on a city sidewalk, killing one and injuring four was found guilty of culpable homicide by a Mumbai criminal court in May 2015.

On Thursday, Justice A. R. Joshi ruled that the testimony of the state's star witness was not "wholly reliable", and that the prosecution had not been able to prove that Khan was drunk at the time of the accident. Khan therefore has been acquitted. Prosecutors said they had not decided whether to challenge verdict.

Anonymous is an internet based collective who claim to hack computers and computer networks to defend internet freedom, human rights and freedom of information.

Anonymous does not have a leader or controlling group, but operates as a loose collective who share similar ideals and aims.

The poet and memoirist Maya Angelou died on May 28th, at the age of eighty-six. A civil-rights activist and a professor at Wake Forest University, Angelou—born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri—was the author of works including “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and received awards including the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

A Chinese woman Peng Waimei, who has kept her son locked in a cage for more than 40 years has appealed for someone to help look after him after she dies.

Peng Weiqing, 48, has been in the cage in his mother's home in the city of Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, since the age of six. Peng Waimei, says that she did it to protect Weiqing.

Waimei and her late husband locked their son away and have fed him through the bars ever since after a series of health problems as a child. When Weiqing was still a baby he suffered a high fever, which left him brain-damaged.

Waimei said: 'He can't control himself. 'When he was young, quite often he would cut himself with a knife and glass debris.'Even when walking, he could suddenly fall down and hit his face and make it bleed. 'He must know me, although he may not know the meaning of "mother". He is my 48-year-old child.

Waimei fears for her son when she dies and hopes to find someone to take care of him. More photos..

Black Man, Kash Delano Register Wrongly Convicted Released After 34 Years In Prison!

In 1979, Brenda Anderson testified that a young man with whom she had gone to high school shot her elderly neighbor to death. Thirty-four years later, Anderson’s sister Sharon took the stand and said the account, which helped send the young man to prison, was a lie.

On Thursday, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sided with Sharon Anderson and threw out the conviction of Kash Delano Register, who maintained his innocence during more than three decades as inmate No. C11693, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Register took his first steps of freedom just after 4:30 p.m. Friday. The 53-year-old exonerated inmate was transported from a Northern California jail to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, where he left a free man, CBS Los Angeles reports.

“It was just an emotional feeling that just came out of nowhere,” Register said. “Finally, after 34 years.”
His release followed a Thursday ruling in which a judge overturned Register’s murder conviction in connection with the 1979 fatal shooting of a 78-year-old man in West Los Angeles.

“I lost my eyesight for a minute. I couldn’t see. I was so rejoiced,” Register’s mother said. “I couldn’t believe what I’d heard. That he had his freedom back.”

His freedom is due in part to Keith Chandler, a former inmate at Folsom State Prison and prison library clerk. Thirteen years ago, Register asked for Chandler’s advice.

“‘I need your help with the parole board,’” Chandler recalled Register saying. “‘I want to know how to explain to the board that I’m not crazy when I say I’m innocent,’ because he was being repeatedly denied parole.”

When Chandler was released from prison, he wrote a petition to get a judge to appoint Register an attorney.
Register ended up with a team of attorneys and students from Loyola Law School’s Project for the Innocent.

They presented a new case, including testimony from Sheila Vanderkam, the estranged sister of one of the original key witnesses, who said she knew her sister lied during her testimony in Register’s trial

Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related "guising" or "trunk-or-treating"), attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Western countries that embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century are Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand.

Nigerians Blocked Indian Road for Over 4 Hours in Protest of a Dead Colleague [PHOTOS]

Nigerians and other African nationals numbering about 200 blocked the National Highway 17 on the outskirts of Goa capital in India today in protest of the death of a yet-to-be identified Nigerian.

According to reports, the incident happened when a gang descended at Parra where many Nigerians stay - in four and two wheeler vehicles and attacked a group of Nigerians with weapons. Some of the Nigerians were on bikes when they were attacked. One was hit with a dagger severally that he breathed his last, while five others were injured in the attack before the assailants fled from the scene.

Other Nigerians, who rushed to the spot on hearing about the ghastly murder, refused the police to take the body for post mortem demanding that the assailtants be arrested first.

“The body was being taken to the Goa Medical College morgue in an ambulance when a mob of Africans stopped it and pulled the corpse out at Porvorim,” a police official said. After removing the body from the van, the protesters dropped the corpse on the road demanding justice to be done – this led to huge traffic jam on the outskirts of the Goa capital.

Meanwhile, as the situation turned volatile, two companies of police personnel were rushed to the spot and some of the protesters were arrested.

Ejiogu Benjamin a Nigerian, sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug-smuggling

Ejiogu Benjamin Ikechukwu, a Nigerian who was arrested in 2012 for smuggling more than 3.4 kilograms of methamphetamine from Thailand into Vietnam, has been sentenced to death by a Ho Chi Minh City court.

The court, which sat in Vietnam early this week, observed that Ikechukwu committed a crime, which is considered “extremely serious” in the country.Ikechukwu was arrested on June 23, 2012 by customs officials at Tan Son Nhat International Airport with the drugs, which were hidden inside 16 metal cylinders and a laptop adapter.

He confessed that he was transporting the cylinders and adapter for a man named Onyekachi, who is still at large. This man told him that someone would find him to receive the consignment.

Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Death is stipulated as a punishment for those convicted of smuggling more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine. It is also the maximum penalty for those found guilty of producing or selling 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics.

Death penalty statistics are not released in Vietnam but the punishment is handed down most frequently to those convicted of murder or drug-trafficking. There are currently 586 people on death row in the country.

A 35-year-old woman has told how she has never felt sexually attracted to men or women. Julie Sondra Decker from Tampa, Florida, revealed that she started describing herself as 'nonsexual' at the age of 15 and when she became aware of the term 'asexual', she changed it. The outgoing blonde says that she's had more offers of sex than she 'wants to count' over the years but, 'without the feelings that usually go with that sort of thing, it's kind of gross.

The writer, who lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment, states that she is not interested in dating or pursuing a domestic partner. 'I have very close friendships but don't want a significant other. I don't want to find another asexual to be roommates with. 'As far as I can tell I'll be happy being single my whole life.' In a YouTube video, Miss Decker says that as a young teenager she kissed and cuddled both boys and girls. But she concluded: 'I never found anything that floated my boat.' She says that her family were convinced that she was a 'closet lesbian'.

Before she went to college her mother even took her to the doctors because she wasn't expressing 'normal' interest in the opposite sex. Given the all-clear she carried on with her studies, graduating from the University of Florida in 2000 with a degree in elementary education and psychology. She said despite there being more awareness about asexuality today, it still remains largely misunderstood. She's had male friends try and 'fix' her by kissing her against her will and many insist that she will 'wake up one day'.

Since opening up about being asexual on the internet, via YouTube and her blog, Miss Decker says that she’s received death threats and been told by several commentators that she just needs a 'good raping.''When people hear that you're asexual, some take that as a challenge,' she told the Huffington Post. 'We are perceived as not being fully human because sexual attraction and sexual relationships are seen as something alive, healthy people do. 'They think that you really want sex but just don't know it yet. For people who perform corrective rape, they believe that they're just waking us up and that we'll thank them for it later.'

Miss Decker says that asexuality presents itself in many forms. Some people, while lacking sexual attraction to any gender, may engage in purely romantic relationships. However, she defines herself as 'aromantic', meaning she does not have any romantic feelings either. Professor Bogaert, an associate professor at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, suggests in his book Understanding Asexuality, that around one per cent of the world's population - 70million people - are 'asexual. He believes that this demographic are 'under-studied' and that they can feel excluded from our 'very sexualised culture'.

Experts say a certain number of asexuals may have always existed but are only now starting to 'come out' as society becomes more liberal. To her ‘haters’, Miss Decker concludes: 'I'm not damaged, lonely or in need of a conversion because I'm not interested [in sex].' She hopes to raise awareness about asexuality through her writing and public speaking. '[I want] people who feel similarly to know they're not alone.'

Tenant Abducts, Impregnates Landlord's Daughter!

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 37-year-old man, Ajibola Idowu, for allegedly kidnapping the daughter of his landlord for three years. The suspect was also said to have forcefully impregnated the victim, Modupe Brown, during captivity. The police told PUNCH Metro that after Brown had given birth to the child, Ajibola refused to allow the child access to immunisation. As a result, the child was said to have contracted polio disease and subsequently became crippled. Details after the break

Lagos Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, told PUNCH Metro that Ajibola, was arrested along with his mother, Ebun, who allegedly conspired with him to commit the act. He said, “Brown, a 400 level student of Business Administration at the Lagos State University, was kidnapped by Ajibola who kept her in captivity with his family for “three years between 2010 and 2013.

“On September 19, 2013, policemen from Area E Command, went to the Sagamu area of Ogun State to rescue the victim and also arrested the mother of the abductor, who watched over the victim. Ajibola was later arrested in the Idumota area of Lagos Island.

“During the three years, Ajibola kept Brown in three locations -Oshogbo, Osun State, where she spent six months; Bariga, Lagos, where she spent six months; and Sagamu, Ogun State, where she spent about two years. “Ajibola forcefully impregnated Brown while in captivity. She delivered a baby girl, who later became deformed as a result of Ajibola’s refusal to have the baby immunised against the Polio virus.”

While speaking with our correspondent, Brown described her ordeal in the hands of her abductor as a journey through the valley of the shadow of death. She said she was abducted at her father’s house in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State. She said, “I can’t even remember how he kidnapped me. All I know is that he held me captive for three years. It’s as if I was under a spell. Even when I was going to give birth, he did not allow me to go to a hospital. The baby was delivered at home and he was the one giving me medication.

“Even one day, when state officials came to the area to immunise children, he said he would not allow the child to be immunised, saying the drugs had been poisoned. Once, when I tried to leave, he threatened to kill me.” PUNCH Metro learnt that during her time in captivity, the victim’s parents, who are retired civil servants, searched hospitals, mortuaries, police stations and churches for her all to no avail.

The victim’s father, Idowu Brown, said he had no clue that Ajibola was the abductor. He said, “I never knew it was Ajibola that kidnapped my daughter. He was my tenant for six years and greeted me every day. We even used to share jokes. He was aware that I had been looking “for my daughter for three years but he never said anything.

“When we could not find her, I reported the matter at FESTAC Police Division. It was in September this year that we heard from our daughter for the first time. She told us that she was in Sagamu and my wife went there. “There we met Ajibola’s mother. That was how we found out that he (tenant) was the one behind the whole thing.”

The suspects however denied abducting the landlord’s daughter. Ajibola’s mother claimed her son and Brown were lovers, who decided to elope, maintaining that the case was not an abduction.

She said, “They were lovers. I never got involved in their matter until the child was born. I went to stay with them for about seven months to take care of the child, who was very ill. A few months after I left, they moved in with me at my three-bedroom house at Sagamu because they had been evicted.

“Ajibola was not staying with us because his business was in Lagos but I was with Brown “most of the time. Many times, I would ask her about her parents and when I could meet them but she kept on giving silly excuses until the day her mother came to my house with policemen.”

Ajibola, who is into satellite dish installation, said the plan to elope was hatched by Brown who paid N200, 000 into his bank account. The money was said to have been meant for her school project. He said he could not understand why she would make such allegations against him.

“I did not kidnap her; we were lovers and decided to elope. Even when she was at my house, she used to make calls to her relatives telling them that she was alright,” he said.

Reports reaching us indicate that a plane crash has occurred at the Lagos airport. A witness said the crash occurred at the local wing of the airport close to the section were JET-A1, plane fuel, is stored. Sources say the light plane, was carrying the body of the late former governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Agagu and some family members.

Fire service officials were seen evacuating the occupants of the plane. It is not yet clear the number of casualties from the crash. The spokesman of the Nigeria aviation agencies, Yakubu Datti, asked for more time to get details of the incident. More photos after the cut...

Fashola Unveils West Africa’s Tallest Hotel In Lagos

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos unveiled the tallest hotel in West Africa, Intercontinental Lagos, built at a cost of N30 billion. The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria is a 23-storey building containing 358 rooms and 37 suites and a Presidential suite. The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by the Milan Group.

Unveiling the 5-star hotel, Fashola said the edifice would surely boost the hospitality and tourism industry in the state, while urging other entrepreneurs to look inward and invest their money in hotels and public utilities such as roads.

Fashola at the official opening of Intercontinental Hotel in Lagos. According to him, the unveiling of the hotel represented the increasing brands of hotels making Nigeria their choice destinations, saying that the tourism industry would be boosted by the new edifice.

“The tourism business is the major sector that creates jobs but sadly, this sector faces lots of challenges across the continent. The Lagos State Government is committed to providing the enabling environment,” he said.

Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha said the hotel would change the landscape of Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in the state. He disclosed that Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed on 31 March, 2004 while it took two years to complete the design work before the conceptualisation of the project began.

He stated that the Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Wema Bank were supportive of the project.
Valechha disclosed the building of the hotel cost over N30 billion while 650 jobs were created for Nigerians.
Regional General Manager, IHG, Africa, Karl Hala said the hotel is the leading hotel in Nigeria, saying the group had 170 Intercontinental Hotels in 60 countries of the world.

He described the unveiling of the hotel in Lagos as a significant milestone in the hospitality industry, adding that the group also had 20 Intercontinental Hotels in Africa and that the hotel was the only 5-star hotel in Nigeria. Chief Executive Officer, Design Group, Bayo Odunlami said it took lots of challenging moment in the design and conceptualization of the project, saying he was happy that the group overcame the hurdles.
