However, it is more or less only symbolic as US advsiors will keep on working in Iraq as well as US forces will patrol the cities along with the Iraqi forces.

It is a coincidence that this very day Iraq has auctioned off some of the country’s largest oil fields to companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron and British Petroleum. Is it not a reminder of the real motives for the 2003 invasion? The invasion resulted in deaths of over one million Iraqis and 4,634 American and other Western troops. The Iraq war was, and continues to be, an imperialist war waged by the American ruling elite for control of oil and geo-strategic advantage.

As written by James Cogan

In an apt analogy, Larry Goldstein of the US-based Energy Policy Research Foundation told the New York Times last week: “Asking why oil companies are interested in Iraq is like asking why robbers rob banks—because that’s where the money is.” Iraq’s total oil reserves are estimated to be at least 115 billion barrels. Its reserves of natural gas are at least 3.36 billion cubic metres.

Millions of people around the world understood in 2003 that the claims of the Bush administration and its international allies about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and links to terrorism were threadbare lies promulgated to justify the plunder of the country’s oil wealth. The claim by the Obama White House that it is continuing the occupation to consolidate “Iraqi democracy” is also a lie.

One can hope that this day will mark a new beginning of Iraq’s history and will bring long awaited political, financial and social stability.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has condemned the head-to-toe cover as a symbol of subjugation rather than the Muslim faith.

While addressing the lawmakers in a major plicy speech, he said:

We cannot accept to have in our country women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity. That is not the idea that the French republic has of women’s dignity. The burka is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience. It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic.

Sarkozy told a special session of parliament he was in favour of holding an inquiry sought by some French lawmakers into whether Muslim women who cover themselves fully in public undermine French secularism and women’s rights. But the president added “we must not fight the wrong battle, in the republic the Muslim religion must be respected as much as other religions.”

The inquiry proposal has won support from politicians on the left and right, but France’s official Muslim council accused lawmakers of wasting time on a fringe phenomenon. The head of the French Council for the Muslim Religion (CFCM), Mohammed Moussaoui, said:

To raise the subject like this, via a parliamentary committee, is a way of stigmatising Islam and the Muslims of France.

If women cover themselves that is not a sign of dignity, however, if they don’t wear any clothes at all that is sign of dignity of French secular society. I beleive that moderation on both side is the answer to this problem. Muslims who beleive that not covering themselves head-to-toe in burka is against relegion then they have the option to go to the countries where they can practice this cultural tradition. At the same time I would expect from the French president to not make this minor matter an issue of national interest.

The Guardians Council, the electoral watchdog, said it has received a total of 646 complaints of irregularities in the conduct of the poll from Mr Mousavi and the other two defeated candidates and was investigating these complaints. It said it had invited the trio to set out their grievances on Saturday, with a decision on Sunday about any possible recount in the June 12 election which returned incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Mr Mousavi himself joined the crowds, most of whom were dressed in black as a mark of mourning for demonstrators killed in clashes during the protests which had been banned by the authorities. State radio has reported seven deaths since the protests began. The protesters carried pictures of Mr Mousavi and placards bearing slogans such as ‘We have not had people killed to compromise and accept a doctored ballot box’.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he would consider a partial recount after Mr Ahmadinejad’s defeated challengers lodged formal complaints of vote-rigging. But Mr Mousavi is insisting that the result of what he has described as a ‘fraud’ be annulled and a new vote called.

One more game and this World Cup is ours. In the big games we do well and now I think we will win this. We can take our chances and we can win the World Cup.

We are slow starters, we arrived late, didn’t have a lot of practice sessions so there was no pressure on us. Suddenly we are in a good position. Afridi is always a match-winner for us. Today he was batting three and he turned it on for Pakistan, it’s all about his commitment but also about our teamwork.

The maverick batsman Shahid said:

It was our last chance to make the final. If you are batting and bowling obviously it’s good. I am very happy to see my team in the final, that’s what I wanted and what I said to him (Younus) - to send me in either at number three or as an opener and he did. I really enjoyed my batting but also the bowling and fielding.

Pakistan successfully defended 149-4 to restrict the favoured Proteas to 142-5 before a jam packed Trent Bridge stadium. Pakistan, runners-up to India in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa two years ago, await the winners of Friday’s semi-final between Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Sunday’s final at Lord’s.

Celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has donated $1,000,000 to a United Nation’s refugee agency to help Pakistanis displaced by fighting between pakistani army and Taliban militants. Angelina Jolie has visited Pakistan three times to witness United Nations relief operations since becoming a ‘goodwill ambassador’ for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001.
Most Pakistanis forced from their homes are living in government buildings or with host families, but more than 260,000 of them are in camps run by UNHCR.
