Nearly 150 people filled the gracious residence built by Dr. Frederic Stanwood in 1916, at 323 Washington Street (adjacent to the Cliff Road ramp next to the Hills post office), to commemorate the re-birth of the still-dignified yet formerly weary and threadbare building. But it was in fact a double celebration, because this night the guests had also come to launch the re-imagining of the Wellesley Historical Society. It had taken 13 years, $2.7 million, and six Society presidents to transform the doctor’s neglected home/office into the enticingly envisioned Wellesley History and Exhibit Center. While paying respectful honor to the treasures of the town’s past, the building is also designed to be, in the present, the shared community hub for the story of our town, and to play a leadership role in the community’s future life as Wellesley’s townwide cultural center. Years ago, back when my kids were teens, I penned a piece for this magazine about a tradition my family had every year just after Thanksgiving. Before we’d even set foot out the door to search for a Christmas tree, we’d bundle up, arm ourselves with thermoses full of hot chocolate, plus a few pairs of clippers and giant canvas tote bags, and trod out together into the wooded backyard in Wellesley.

As a team, we’d search out pieces of nature that could be turned into festive Christmas decorations—pine boughs, red berries, birch branches, and anything else that could be wrangled into sculptural decorations. Then, together, we’d make an enormous mess in the kitchen, workshop-style, creating multiple types of decor—indoor and outdoor. For the next month, we’d marvel at our handiwork, as our masterpieces sat in multiple spots around the house: on the mantle, in holiday planters, and on table centers.

Wellesley resident Dr. Rakesh K. Jain was recently honored with the 2025 AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research. Dr. Jain is the director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Andrew Werk Cook Professor of Radiation Oncology (Tumor Biology) at Harvard Medical School. He was recognized for his lifelong achievements and pioneering contributions that have transformed the scientific understanding of the tumor microenvironment and its role in cancer progression and treatment.
