Fuller Craft Museum, New England’s home for contemporary craft, presents Iron Twenty Ten. On display June 2, 2012 – October 7, 2012. 

Iron Twenty Ten: A Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Blacksmithing offers both the casual viewer and the seasoned metalsmith a comprehensive survey of the finest contemporary blacksmithing in the United States today. The artists in the exhibition are united by a commitment to the highest levels of craft and a point of view that is both distinct and contemporary. 

This show is significant because working with metal had long been overlooked as a craft; and yet, this art form boasts a long and rich history of innovative contemporary practitioners. This glimpse of metalwork in the 21st century also casts an eye toward the future of a vital art form.  Iron Twenty Ten was organized by the National Ornamental Metal Museum, Memphis, Tennessee and is sponsored in part by WGBH.

The work, from an exciting mix of established and emerging artists, was selected by a jury of prominent blacksmiths and scholars, including Anna Fariello, Tom Joyce, Richard Quinnell, and James Wallace. The exhibition demonstrates the variety of forms that contemporary blacksmithing can take, including abstract and representational sculpture, vessels, architectural ironwork, firescreens, furniture, and other functional items. 

Employing both traditional and innovative approaches, the selected work demonstrates the tremendous breadth of ideas and depth of talent found in American blacksmithing today.

Reception

Fuller Craft will celebrate the opening of Iron Twenty Ten, at our summer opening reception, June 3, 2012 at 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Museum. The reception will also celebrate Dan Dailey: Working Method and Living Treasures of North Carolina Craft.  The reception is free for members and free with museum admission for all others.

The new Chelmsford High School Performing Arts Center will host the biennial EMACT (Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theater) festival of performance and competition June 28-30, 2012.  In three-play sessions, eleven theater groups will present a variety of complete, but compressed, plays to showcase their production talent, and for the opportunity to improve their craft. 

Professional adjudicators, Benny Sato Ambush, Annette Procunier, and Spencer Watson will share their expertise in public discussion of the assets, obstacles, ingenuity, professionalism and effectiveness of both the technical and artistic components of each production.  Two outstanding productions will be selected to compete in Regional Competition of AACT (American Association of Community Theater). 

Of special interest is whether the previous festival winner, The Arlekin Players, will again present their offering completely in Russian.  Their 2010 production of “The Bear” continued to win accolades and awards in Regional and National competitions, as well as abroad, on tour in Europe, Russia and America. 

Tickets for each session are $25; full festival pass (4 sessions) $75, and may be purchased at the website www.emact.org or at the door.  Adjudications will be given at the end of each session and are free to attend. Parking is plentiful and access is convenient, just off I-495 in Chelmsford, MA.
