Winner of the BMF May Motorcycle Show prize draw

Brighton Speed Trials 2013 cancelled

The Brighton and Hove Motor Club is known for organising the world famous Brighton Speed Trials which are held along Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront every year.

It is always an entertaining day out for all ages, especially on a lovely sunny day, as a totally eclectic mixture of vehicles - cars and motorcycles - take their turn to speed over the quarter mile course on the seafront in an attempt to be the fastest!

The event has been running for over 100 years now as it was first held in 1905 and some of the vehicles which enter each year look as though they might have been in the original race! It is in fact the longest running motorsport event in the world!

The Old Fella
The sea defence wall along which the coast road above Madeira Drive now runs, was constructed in 1830-38 to hold back the sea which at that time lapped right up to the cliffs. Today it is a great place to view the Speed Trials from, although it only costs £10 to get into Madeira Drive and wander down to see all the vehicles and racers as they prepare for their turn.
Nothing tops this for atmosphere, and the smell and smoke of the burnouts as the racers heat their tyres up prior to their run and the sound of revving and racing engines is unbeatable.

It is unusual in modern motorsport to be able to get so close to the actual racers and their machines and have a chance to watch them burn off from such close quarters.

Cancelled for 2013
This year the event was scheduled to take place on the 14th of September but it has just been announced that the 2013 event has been cancelled due to safety concerns.

ASCO Honda sidecar at start line 2012

Last year an ASCO Honda sidecar outfit was involved in a crash in which the passenger was killed.

Due to this, the Brighton and Hove Motor Club and the City Safety Advisory Group, which reviews safety for major Brighton&Hove events, have opted not to stage the event this year.
Apparently this is because enquiries into the accident are still on-going and the Coroner has yet to hold an inquest into the sidecarpassenger's sad death.

Roland Brown becomes Telegraph motorcycle correspondent

Roland Brown has taken over at the Telegraph as their new motorcycle correspondent.

Roland has been a full-time motorcycle journalist since 1982, with previous roles including deputy editor of Bike magazine. He went freelance in 1989 and has written about ten books about - you guessed it - motorcycling...

Starting with a moped at the age of sixteen, Roland has been a motorcyclist for a total of thirty-seven years! He even had a motorcycle race career at international level during the 1980s.

About five years ago I bought a recovered Kawasaki ZXR750 H1 from a bike breakers in Chorley for £400. I didn't expect much from the old girl as she looked well and truly battered with stripped wires, broken footrests and just generally in a very sorry state. Got it home and stripped it down, found the headgasket had gone so the engine had to be stripped ready for the head to be skimmed and new gaskets fitted...

Dan Kneen gets back on track at IOMTT

Manxman Dan Kneen has got his season back on track this week with the Marks Bloom Racing rider, sponsored by Wemoto, returning from injury for the Isle of Man TT Races. The 25-year old suffered a broken foot in mid-April at Jurby, which seriously affected his preparations for the International road racing season but, after being forced to miss the North West 200 earlier this month, he duly took his place on the line for the Lightweight practice session on Saturday evening.

Yamaha Factory Racing prepare for 'home' grand prix at Mugello

Yamaha Factory Racing set up for their ‘home’ race in Italy this weekend for the Gran Premio d'Italia at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello near Florence. Nestled deep in the Tuscan hills, the Mugello circuit is just over 300km from the team’s base in Gerno di Lesmo, near Milan. The track is a favourite for both Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, with each scoring multiple victories across classes. Lorenzo can claim one 250cc win, two second place premier class finishes in 2009 and 2010 and the last two consecutive premier class victories in 2011 and 2012.

Bike of the week - Yamaha VMax

In 1985 a motorcycle star was born the Yamaha VMax. It was designed in California by an Englishman called John Reed whose commission from Yamaha was to design the ultimate muscle cruiser. When it appeared in 1985, with a power package based on the Yamaha Venture Royal V-4 Tourer engine, it was greeted with delight by the press and was voted bike of the year and best cruiser of the year to name but a few of the accolades which were showered upon its muscular shoulders.

Friday morning bright an early and four intrepid Wemoto staff set off for the BMF equipped with: banners, flags, balloons, boards of parts, a truly great racing motorcycle with a fantastic pedigree - the Marks Bloom racing GSXR1000 which has graced and raced the Isle of Man TT course since 2004, Wemoto Jerry's magnificent handmade Coccinella moped, a giant tent, some little tents and an empty space where the Lego bricks should have been.

Xavier Simeon podiums in French MotoGP

It was a great race weekend for the Moto2 Belgian rider Xavier Simeon at Le Mans in France. From fifth on the grid, Simeon ran in the top three for the majority of the race. He overhauled Mika Kallio for second position with four laps to go, but was demoted to third when the race was stopped at the end of the twenty-second lap and the result was declared.

He was obviously disappointed to have been dropped back to third place when the red flag flew, but this did not dampen the mood within the squad. He now sits seventh in the Riders’ Championship as the series moves on to Mugello in Italy.

Road racing stars, John McGuinness and Conor Cummins will be the premier attractions of a new motorcycling event set to debut this June. Both men will be battling it out in the TT and Classic TT on the Isle of Man this summer.

‘The Morecambe Missile’ and the Manxman will both be in attendance at The Carole Nash Newark Bike Bonanza, giving visitors a chance to get up close to two giants of the racing world.

Well, I returned from a marvellous day at the Trailworld Offroad School covered head to foot in glory, dust and woodchips, with a modest but meaningful trophy marking my extraordinary and heroic achievements.

Lowes and Yamaha victorious in Monza

Yakhnich Yamaha Motorsport rider Sam Lowes delivered a great victory in a drama filled Monza World Supersport race at the weekend, punctuated by no less than three red flag incidents.

The young British rider had started from pole on his Yamaha YZF-R6, his eighth career pole and third consecutive of the 2013 season. Having fallen as an innocent victim in the first of several major on-track incidents Lowes was able to restart and became the key protagonist in the ten lap sprint that became the last re-start of the Supersport race. Victory had looked in doubt on the penultimate lap as Lowes dropped to fourth, however a stunning pass on the brakes going into the Della Roggia chicane put the Brit ahead of Florian Marino, Lorenzo Zanetti and Riccardo Russo to secure the lead which he held to the line.

This victory moves Lowes firmly into the World Supersport Championship lead with seventy points, sixteen clear of Fabien Foret in second place after four rounds.

Lowes teammate Vladimir Leonov made an impressive recovery from a challenging twenty-first position on the grid to finish well inside the top ten, beating Luca Scassa across the line by two tenths of a second to take seventh at the flag. The Russian worked hard to avoid the numerous track incidents and work his way through the field on each re-start. The result puts Leonov into thirteenth in the standings with twenty-one points.

“Today was a bit different to a normal race day. In the previous starts I was lucky to not get into too much trouble. That race was quite difficult for me, and a very good battle. Thank you very much to my team and to Yamaha who have given me a fantastic bike all season. We’ll see everyone at my home race in Donington and hopefully we can do the same again!”

Morrentino Scores Maiden Superstock 600 Victory

Victory and podium domination also went to Yamaha in the Superstock 600 European Cup race. Team Trasimeno Yamaha rider Nicola Morrentino being the first of four Yamaha YZF-R6s to cross the line, securing his maiden victory in challenging conditions. The race started shortly after a major rainstorm, making Morrentino’s victory even more special, the Italian having ridden nine laps through difficult conditions and a soaking wet track for his win. The win places him in fourth in the standings with thirty-three points, twenty-four behind fellow Yamaha rider and Championship leader Gauthier Duwelz, who finished ninth.

New motorcycle-ride route finder from Carole Nash

There's a new online route finder website out from Carole Nash which has been specifically designed for motorcyclists and details great riding routes through the UK and Ireland. The route start points all appear on the site via Google maps and you basically just click on the map number in the area in which you want to ride and the route will appear. Along with the route plan there will be some tips about it like how hard it is and the mileage so that you can plan your day out.

Huge entry confirmed for IOM Classic TT

The Isle of Man Government, Department of Economic Development has attracted a huge entry for the Classic TT Races, the new motorcycle race meeting which takes place in August this year on the Isle of Man.

Entries for the Classic TT, which forms part of the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, closed on the 3rd May with two of the three main races oversubscribed.
