Congratulations to Wendy & Lisa on Their ASCAP Honor!

Today, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced that Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman will be the recipients of the very first ASCAP Shirley Walker Award!

As is stated in ASCAP's announcement:

The Shirley Walker Award honors those whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music. Shirley Walker, an ASCAP member, was the first prominent female film and TV composer. As the first female composer to get a solo score credit on a major Hollywood motion picture, she is remembered as a pioneer for women in the film industry.

"Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are two of the finest composers working in film and TV music," said ASCAP Vice President of Film & TV/Visual Media Shawn LeMone. "Their music sets new standards for excellence, and their achievements have inspired a generation of female composers looking to follow their lead. I can think of no more deserving recipients of ASCAP's very first Shirley Walker Award."

This award couldn't go to better and more influential composers! Since their first composing gig (Dangerous Minds) to their current Television work (The Witches of East End), Lisa and Wendy have inspired and encouraged both women and a new generation of musicians to consider the art of movie and television composition.

The award ceremony will be held June 25th, 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, for us fans (who would love to be there), the ceremony is by invitation only. Hopefully, ASCAP will either provide video or a great description of the ceremony.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS to the dynamic duo! This is an award that is well-deserved and couldn't go to more talented musicians.

Wendy & Lisa are Honored at Score! (Video Included)

Sorry! It's been a while since there has been a good Wendy & Lisa News post, but the ladies have been pretty quiet (they are probably doing something cool like 'working' and 'living life'. lol).

However, the dynamic duo were recently honored at a first-time, sold-out event called "Score!" As the Hollywood Reporter says, Score! is the brainchild of TV Academy Music Peer Group Governor Michael A. Levine who envisioned a concert in which a 67-piece orchestra and a 40-voice LA chorus would perform some of TV music's greatest compositions. The event, sponsored by The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, was held May 21st at UCLA's Royce Hall.

Both Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin were in the audience to see their work from Heroes, Touch, Carnivale, and Nurse Jackie conducted by the very talented Suzie Katayama (who played stings along with Lisa's brother, David Coleman, on Purple Rain's "Take Me With You", "Baby I'm A Star", and "Purple Rain". Ms. Katayama also did work on Madonna's Ray of Light album and has worked with many other great performers).

The "Score!" event is yet another reminder (besides their Emmy) of how talented both Lisa & Wendy truly are. In a field heavily dominated by men, they demonstrate the breadth, talent, and work ethic that women can posses and combine these ideals to reach the highest echelons of television composing. As a woman, they will always be an inspiration to me (and, if I had an ounce of musical ability, they would be even greater roll models).

Thanks to the ladies' great manager, we can witness their very cool honor!

Congratulations to Wendy & Lisa on the Renewal of 'Witches of East End'!

Wendy & Lisa, the dynamic scoring duo, are the composers for the brand new show, Witches of East End, currently airing on cable’s Lifetime Channel. Lifetime has announced that Witches will return, next year, for its second season.

According to the New York Post, Witches of East End “is averaging 3 million viewers and 1.7 million viewers in the key adults 18-49 and 25-54 demos…. The drama’s first season finale airs Dec. 15.”

The new season of Witches is set to premiere in 2014 with 13 new episodes.

In case you don’t know, Wendy & Lisa have been the television composers for the shows “Touch”, “Nurse Jackie”, “Prime Suspect”, “Mercy”, “Heroes”, “Bionic Woman”, “Crossing Jordan”, and “Snoops”.

Are you saddened by having to wait until Fall for anothe episode Touch? Well, you can re-live the opening sequence *anytime* you want to! Thankfully, the ladies were allowed to release the Touch Theme on iTunes! It features 2 slightly different versions: 1) Girls Brothers Mix and 2) Battle Tapes Mix. The Girls Brothers Mix features a few more instruments than the show opener. In addition, some of you who answered Lisa's call for sining numbers (a while back, Lisa asked fans to call in and sing 1....10 in the same tune as the alphabet) just might hear yourselves at the end of The Girls Brothers Mix. Very cool!!!!

Watch Fox's New Series "Touch" and Listen to Wendy & Lisa!

Tonight, Thursday, March 15th, Fox (Network) will be re-airing the premier episode of "Touch". In case you are un-aware, Touch is composed by the ever-talented Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin!

Written and created by Tim Kring (who also worked with Wendy & Lisa on "Crossing Jordan" and "Heroes"), Touch is about 11 year-old Jake (David Mazouz) who neither communicates nor appears to understand much of what is going on around him. His father, Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland), tries desperately to form a bond with his son without any apparent success. Through a series of events, Bohm realizes that his son recognizes much more than anyone realizes. The young Jake tries desperately to get his father to perform specific actions which will impact people around the world in a domino effect.

Touch is insightful, interesting, and complex. What seems like completely unrelated people and events, from around the world, become woven together to make a tapestry of suspense and adventure.

If not for the great writing, watch Touch for the great score!

Touch will begin its 'regular' schedule next week, Thursday, March 22nd at 9pm (EST).

Watch The Premier of Wendy & Lisa’s Newest Scoring Adventure, “Prime Suspect”!

Tonight, on NBC, you can watch the premier of “Prime Suspect”. According to the show’s website "Prime Suspect takes a look inside a New York City homicide department. The series stars Maria Bello ("A History of Violence") as tough-as-nails NYPD homicide Detective Jane Timoney, an outsider who has just transferred to a new squad where her new colleagues already dislike her.” The show is based on a “critically acclaimed” UK television series of the same name.

I have seen the show’s commercials and it looks very interesting (if you are into police dramas). Aside from the interesting plot, however, you will be able to listen to none other than Wendy & Lisa performing the score! Lately, they have been hard at work composing the score for each episode and I can’t wait to hear what they have in store for Prime Suspect. The show appears to definitely have a different feel from Heroes, Nurse Jackie, Carnivale, Crossing Jordan, and even Snoops, so it will be interesting to see what they come with to help tell a story that appears to be more ‘gritty’ than their past television series.

Prime Suspect will air Thursdays on NBC. Be sure to check your local television listings for the time!

Lisa Coleman Appears in "Put The Needle On The Record"!

As reported from Wendy & Lisa’s Official website, Lisa Coleman was interviewed for a new book called PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD. According to Amazon, “Put The Needle on The Record is pop culture historian Matthew Chojnacki's definitive guide to 7- and 12-inch vinyl single artwork from the '80s." Wendy & Lisa have their own page in the book, containing the "Satisfaction" 12" single artwork + Lisa's commentary. The author, Matthew, also included a great quote from Lisa on a page pertaining to Grace Jones!

Not only do you get additional insight from Lisa, but 20% of the author’s royalties from Put the Needle on the Record will be donated to the Keep a Child Alive foundation, which provides first class AIDS care, treatment, surrounding support, and food for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

Wendy & Lisa’s “Snapshots” Provides A Beautiful Picture Into Their Musical Past

Wendy & Lisa have a new EP called “Snapshots”. The EP is a compilation of music that they have created during the past 15-20 years, but was never released for one reason or another. The music provides an intimate view into Wendy & Lisa’s musical creativity when it is unbounded by big record company limitations, worries of music sales, and expectations of others. Snapshots provides a little something for everybody; the rockers, the dancers, and the mellow.

Perfect Stranger

The first track proves that Wendy & Lisa can make a hit in any genre that they can desire; from the gospel “I Think It Was December”, to the funky “Are You My Baby”, to this rock-infused “Perfect Stranger”. As the liner notes explain, this song was written to be the theme song for the 90s television show “Snoops”. Although a Blondie song beat the ladies out for the title theme, “Perfect Stranger” as well as Wendy Melvoin did actually make it onto the show (see the 10-minute mark in Snoops Part 1 for Wendy performing Perfect Stranger and watch Snoops Part 2 for the second half of the program). The song is fun, reminiscent of 80s punk rock, and has the near-risqué lyrics to go with it: “I’m reaching in inside of you, you can feel it, I’m gonna make it hotter and hotter” (although the last lyrics could be “harder and harder”). However, the punk-rock, guitar infused Perfect Stranger proves that Wendy & Lisa can master any sound that they set their minds to.

Time

The EP then completely changes course and presents us with the dreamy, funky, instrumental “Time”. The song begins with a rush of upbeat strings and keyboards but unexpectedly turns to a funky guitar riff. The song continues to alternate between the dreamlike strings/keyboards and funky guitar riff to give you the best of both musical worlds in the same song.

Water To The Wave

The EP then moves on to one of my new all-time, favorite Wendy & Lisa songs, “Water To The Wave” (WTTW) with lyrics written by Lisa Coleman. It is a shame that the song never made it onto the Soul Food soundtrack (as told in the liner notes) so that we could have enjoyed this incredibly beautiful song much sooner. Part love-song, part romantic lullaby, WTTW takes the listener on an auditory journey through the elements: “I would trade the stars for you, paint the sunrise on the moon, romanced by your every move, I’m like water to the wave” and “Like the waves that move the sea, it’s your love that carries me.” Lisa’s beautiful piano playing along with Wendy’s equally beautiful vocals carries the listener on a wonderful voyage through love and tranquility. As beautiful as the first 3:12 is, however, the last minute-and-a-half is exceptional. A drum machine coupled with Lisa’s ethereal playing definitely changes the song into an experimental sound that I would find hard to believe anyone saw coming. Like “Time”, it’s a song built upon another song except, this time, a surreal almost funky groove replaces the lullaby love song. From the first time hearing this song, it instantly became one of my Wendy & Lisa favorites.

Rosalyn

Rosalyn switches the tempo of the EP once again and we return to an upbeat dance groove. The track features funky guitar riffs that are a signature of Wendy’s playing. The song almost sounds as if it could have been the title theme for some cool action drama. According to the liner notes, the song was purposely put together using a wide range of sounds. The result is a groovy, electro-ish dance groove. Mix plenty of percussion, a hip guitar riff on top of a rock guitar melody, along with a myriad of different cool keyboard sounds, and you have “Rosalyn”. This song is sure to get some part of your body moving.

Rock Song

The next musical snapshot comes in the form of a rock song appropriately titled “Rock Song”. One of the amazing gifts of Wendy & Lisa is to make you feel comfortable with a song and, when you least expect it, completely switch it up to something different. This ability is truly one of their hallmarks and is evident on “Rock Song”. The song begins with some light, mellow keyboarding played by Lisa. Then, just when you think you’ve got a feel for the song, Wendy enters with an awesome heavy guitar riff. As you are rocking along with her, before you know it, the song switches back to its mellow side. Back and forth, the song alternates: mellow, rock, mellow, rock, always keeping your ears on its toes wondering what you will hear next. Wend & Lisa’s ability to not only appeal to your auditory senses but to also keep you intellectually invested in their music, by completely changing the song’s sounds, melodies, and tempo, is a testament to their talent and adeptness as skilled musicians.

Lemon Chiffon

Like “Water To The Wave”, “Lemon Chiffon” quickly became one of my favorite Wendy & Lisa tracks. Co-written with Chris Bruce, around the time of Girl Bros, “Lemon Chiffon” reminds me of the kind of song that I would love to hear while taking a stroll on a beautiful beach with a full sunset in the background or a walk on a relaxing rainy Spring day. It is slow, soft, and serene with no surprises. The mellow melody is achieved through minimalist drumming, acoustic guitar, and keyboarding that makes sure not to dominate the song. Towards the end of this beautiful song, however, the organ-sounding keyboards play a more prominent role sounding heavenly and celestial. “Lemon Chiffon” with its calming beauty is a perfect way to end this EP. If you are ever stressed or angry, play this song! I can’t imagine that you will be the same person afterwards. This is definitely the kind of beautiful music that can soothe even the most savage of beasts. “Lemon Chiffon” is truly beauty in its auditive form.

Snapshots gives us a beautiful picture of the musical imagination of Wendy & Lisa. They state that it is their most personal album thus far. We are lucky that they decided to share these wonderful musical masterpieces instead of keeping them locked in a vault in some un-disclosed location.

As with their last album, White Flags of Winter Chimneys, this EP is a completely ‘do it yourself’ venture. Wendy & Lisa (along with their great manager) is responsible for producing, releasing, and distributing Snapshots. In addition to the great music, the EP will be released with other great products. According to their website (Wendy & Lisa Official Website), the EP will be released along with limited canvas prints and a hard-cover book. As with their last album, I am sure that there will be autographed copies available along with several cool bundles for us to choose from.

So, if you are a Wendy & Lisa fan or just a fan of well-made alternative music, make SURE to get yourself a copy of Snapshots! It truly presents a beautiful picture of Wendy & Lisa’s amazing musical talent!

Wendy & Lisa have posted on their website that the new EP, entitled "SNAPSHOTS", is in manufacture! In addition to the EP it sounds like additional goodies will be available like 'limited canvas prints' and 'hard cover books'. They are still being mum on what these items will be, but I am sure that we will find out when everything is finished soon! It will be great to hear more music from the talented ladies!!!

Wendy & Lisa participated in this year's TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Palm Springs. While there, Wendy & Lisa, along with Jill Sobule and other musicians spent 4 days writing a song and creating a video! The music was written while on board the famous John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.

New Wendy & Lisa App Hints At New Album!

As mentioned in the last post, the new Wendy & Lisa iPhone App is awesome and is a must have for fans! Not only does the app provide plenty of different features (music, photos, Facebook/Twitter integration, videos, etc.), the app appears to offer some exclusive news (for the keen reader). In the second post, on the “Fan Wall”, someone asked whether Wendy & Lisa will be working on another album. Wendy & Lisa’s manager replied that “[t]he answer is YES. We’ve already started”. That is EXCITING news! There is no word yet on how much of the album is finished or when the ladies started, but I am sure that we will be hearing additional news in the future! Receiving great news like this makes the App definitely worth getting. Given that the app is FREE, there is really no reason not to get it (except that you don’t have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch)! I hear that they will be releasing more exclusive news via the app in the future, so stay tuned and get the cool App!

Wendy & Lisa's "Fruit At The Bottom" To Be Re-Released!

On February 21, 2011, Cherry Pop Records will re-release Wendy & Lisa's sophomore album "Fruit At The Bottom". This release is an upgrade to the prior re-release in 2006 by Wounded Bird Records. As in the Wounded Bird release, this release will feature remixes of Lolly Lolly, Are You My Baby?, and Satisfaction. In addition, a b-side ("Happy Birthday") will also be included. However, what makes this release un-like any other (including the Wounded Bird release) is the inclusion of "Hip Hop Love"; a never before released track by Wendy & Lisa. Therefore, if you are a Wendy & Lisa collector, this re-release is definitely an album to get!

Girl Bros Radio is back and has found a new home! Girl Bros Radio will air this Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 at 6pm (PST). The show will be a 3-hour auditory extravaganza featuring a bit of Lisa's MusicLab, a bit of DJ Wendy, and a whole lot of great music! In addition to the great music and conversation, you will also be able to chat with the ladies and fellow listeners.
