Here's my latest self published title TEMPTED BY TWO, a steamy hot menage erotic romance set a sleepy, old world English village. On holiday, heroine Katie meets Marcus Dane, a handsome artist who she's admired for a long time, and quickly becomes involved in an intense three way affair with him, and with his equally gorgeous lover, Owen.

This is a brand new, never before published novella and it's been huge fun to write. I had such a great time writing my first menage novella, POWER OF THREE, and I was keen to do another threesome story. I also wanted to write something set in the sort of traditional village setting that I love from watching my favourite Miss Marple stories on the telly. It's a nod to the famous and very clever detecting old lady that the village Katie visits is called Little Marplethorpe... I also indulged myself hugely with the 'hero templates' I used. My two big crushes at the moment are Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, and Simon Baker as The Mentalist, Patrick Jane, so these two yummy actors 'play' Marcus Dane and Owen Foster respectively.

I've made a new cover for my erotic BDSM short, NAUGHTY THOUGHTS. I very much liked my old cover for this title, but after listening to the thoughts and advice of a bunch of smart self publishers, all of whom are far bigger sellers than I am, I realized I ought to try something a bit more eye-catching...

So, what do you think? I think it's fun and saucy and does suggest the 'naughty thoughts' that the heroine Vickie has, the BDSM fantasies she indulges in when she's making love with her man, Terrence. Luckily for her, Terrence is a perceptive fellow... and a dominant... so pretty soon he's making her dreams into reality.

What's new with me...

First of all, many apologies for the very sporadic blogging. I'm getting more and more hopeless at keeping up with my blog in my old age...

So, what's been happening?

My main news is that I'm writing again for my most long standing and best loved publisher, Black Lace. Perhaps in the light of recent publishing developments [50 Shades, what else?] this iconic line of erotica for women and erotic romance is relaunching in September, and as well as writing something new for the line, I have a couple, thus far, of Black Lace Classic reprints scheduled. THE STRANGER will be out this September and THE DEVIL INSIDE, next September [the latter was going to be out in Jan '13, but that's been changed]. Black Lace will have a new cover 'look', which I know is going to be utterly fabulous and the cover image guy for THE STRANGER is absolutely scrumptious. Not quite as gorgeous as the wonderful Paul McGann, on whom my Paul was modelled, but definitely easy on the eye. I'll be revealing covers as soon as I receive the final versions. In the meantime here's a lovely piccie of *my* Paul... ;)

Yum! And he even wears the outfit too.

There's also another very exciting Black Lace 'thing' that I'm waiting for a few more details of before I start plugging it. Won't be too long though... definitely by August.

But it's not just reprints. I'm working on a new title, even as we speak. This one's called THE ACCIDENTAL CALL GIRL, and in it, as you might gather from the title, the heroine Lizzie Aitchison gets mistaken for an escort in the bar of a posh hotel, and decides to play a long with the misconception because the 'punter', one John Smith [yes, really] is an absolute dish. Initially only intending to play 'the game' for one delicious interlude, Lizzie, masquerading as 'Bettie', finds herself mesmerised by the handsome and dominant Mr Smith, and as he only seems to want a temporary companion, she continues with her masquerade as a high class hooker. For just the one very special and extremely kinky client.

Needless to say, I'm having enormous fun with this one, and have already written about 20K words so far.

I've also recently been working on an erotic romance novella called TEMPTED BY TWO. This one's a ménage a trois story, about Katie, who's taking a country holiday in order to reassess her life, and who becomes involved with famous and charismatic artist Marcus Dane, and his handsome manager, muse and lover, Owen. I'm hoping this story might be available in a couple of weeks or so.

There's a load of other stuff going on, but lastly, here are two important snippets of news for right now!

It's come to my attention that it's not always possible to find all my books at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and other Amazon sites... even though the books are available to purchase there!

The problem occurs when someone tries to search for my titles via the Home page, using the 'All' tab in the search box. Using that method brings a nice list of Portia titles... but no Spice Briefs!!!! And some of my titles from Black Lace, Total-e-Bound don't show up either. :(

However, if you search for my titles with 'Books' selected in the search box tab, or you search from the Books page, it's a different story, and lo and behold there are my Spice Briefs titles and more of my Black Lace novels etc too.

Historical romance novelist? Moi?

Here's my first full length historical romance novel - IN THE FLESH. It's had a weird road to publishing... it was going to be an erotica/erotic romance title, for Harlequin Spice, but when that line was closed, the book was moved over to the HQN line, and now it's listed as historical romance. For anyone that wonders, though, it's still the *same* book and it's just as hot! Luckily, it was always a traditional romantic love story too, with a journey towards a happily ever after ending, so it fit right into it's new home very nicely... despite an inordinate amount of bonking and other sexual shenanigans between it's stunningly beautiful covers. :)

It's due out in an ebook form on 1st April [some would say that's very apt when it's something I've written... LOL] in the epub format from venues like eHarlequin, Barnes and Noble, All Romance eBooks and Diesel eBooks.

A Kindle ebook will surely appear before long, but I suspect it won't be before 1st May. If I had my way, all editions would come out simultaneously all over the world on the same day, so everybody who wants a book can buy it in whatever form they like best. But alas, publishing doesn't work like that.

Rebecca's Tale

Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While I don't think that Rebecca's Tale is quite the great classic that its literary source is, I enjoyed it very much on a second reading, possibly more than the first time. It's certainly a page turner in the way Rebecca is, and it's also just as full of unreliable narrators interpreting stories, at second hand, that were unreliable start with!

Having read it I still don't know if Rebecca was a Jezebel or a woman multiply wronged... although it does seem to me that she might have been a combination of both, and more, and had become the former because of the latter. And I certainly come out of this book disliking Maxim de Winter even more than ever, although somehow I feel more pity for the second Mrs de Winter.

Just like the original novel, Rebecca's Tale has that power, for me, of seeming like a *true* story, and that's got to be a measure of its quality.

Rebecca's tale is elusive, frustrating and poignant. Much like the original...

Rebecca - book review

I think this was probably my third time of reading Rebecca, and each reading has been a different experience. I'm sure I remember that in the first two readings I was very much 'on the side' of the Second Mrs de Winter... but this time around has been quite different.

On third reading, I suddenly find myself deeply impatient with the unnamed narrator, and have formed an active loathing for Maxim. I'm sure they're both accurate products of their time, their ages, and their classes... but still. I can't be doing with milksop women and arrogant, self-serving, insensitive men. I'm not one for brooding tragic heroes who take their woes out on those around them. And even though Mrs de Winter does grow a backbone in the end, it's only to support her husband, who suddenly seems to lose his. And there's something vaguely repellent about her smug anticipation of a future life with him at Manderley, even though she *knows* he's a murderer.

Having said all that... my strong responses to Rebecca only serve to show what an exceptional, indeed, what a truly great book it is. The writing is so strong and vivid and compelling, and to feel the way I do about it can only be because I'm perceiving it as *real*! And when writing/reading fiction you can't really get any better than that.

It's not a romance, as I once thought in my less seasoned younger days. It's barely even a romantic suspense. It's far more a dark, subversive and very unsettling psychological mystery and character study. And all the more for the great enigma at the very centre of it, Rebecca herself. Maxim says what a venal character she is... but then, he's biased, isn't he?

See, I'm talking about it as if it's real again... LOL

No doubt I will probably read Rebecca again some time. Wonder what I'll think of it then?

Here's the lowdown:

Middle management executive Victoria Renard works for a large insurance firm that has just been bought out by the mysterious and reclusive business tycoon F.W. Shanley the Third. Vicki and her colleagues are all concerned about their future, in the wake of the takeover, and into this tension fraught situation, walks devilishly attractive freelance photographer Red Webster on assignment to take photos for a new company profile.

Vicki finds Red attractive but his sexy teasing rubs her the wrong way. Red in turn is turned on by Vicki's feisty, challenging personality and her undeniable beauty. He also senses a kindred spirit, a woman who shares his sexual preference for BDSM pleasure, and his hopes are confirmed when he discovers her reading a copy of "The Story of O" on her Kindle.

Unknown to Vicki and her fellow employees, though, Red Webster and Frederick Webster Shanley are one and the same person, as the unconventional businessman likes to investigate his new acquisitions from the inside, and get to know his workforce without them knowing it's him. Free of the boss/employee dynamic, Red is able to woo and seduce Vicki on equal terms, first in a kinky encounter in the company gym, and later during a long, hedonistic weekend at a very beautiful, luxurious and risqué hotel.
