T-Mobile informs customers of security breach with a credit application processor

T-Mobile has released a statement regarding a security breach with one of its credit application processors, Experian, that saw the records of 15 million customers compromised over a two-year period.

T-Mobile has released a statement about the security breach of Experian, a company that T-Mobile uses to process its credit applications. CEO John Legere says that an investigation has revealed that the records of 15 million people were acquired by a third party between September 1, 2013 and September 16, 2015. This includes those who required a credit check for service or device financing.

Now that it has been a few days and folks have mostly gotten over the initial shock of not only the Priv by BlackBerry name but also the fact that BlackBerry will officially be releasing an Android-powered handset, I wanted to go ahead and sort of revisit a question we raised previously. Back in June, we asked CrackBerry readers 'Would you buy an Android-based BlackBerry?' and at the time, the answer was pretty telling with 53.95% stating that if it was wasn't running BlackBerry 10 they didn't want it while 21.55% voted that they'd love to see BlackBerry hardware coupled with the Android ecosystem.

Misfit Wearables has had some great success in the wearable tech space. Its first product, Shine, is an activity tracker with fashion appeal. The product, according to CEO Sonny Vu, wasn’t even taken seriously by the company until its massive success on Indiegogo. Before they launched the Indiegogo page, Sonny wasn’t entirely sure why people were buying activity trackers and whether or not it was a passing fad. More than $800,000 later, Shine was crowdfunded and on its way to production. This product also kickstarted the company into the wearable industry, and led it to get a much better understanding of the wearable space and where it’s going. This was the focus of Sonny Vu’s talk at Web Summit 2014.

Printearth is making the 3D printer revolution biodegradable

Printearth is an Ottawa based startup which specializes in manufacturing 100% biodegradable plastic filaments for 3D printers. Plastic filament is essentially the ink for 3D printers since it’s melted and applied in thin layers by the printer to produce physical objects. The current industry standards are either petroleum based plastics or PLA. Even though PLA is a bioplastic, it’s only compostable in commercial composters.

The Ritot smartwatch is an interesting product that looks like something right out of the movie In Time with Justin Timberlake. It seems a lot of people also love the idea, as the Ritot has raised over $300,000, well in excess its initial goal of $50,000.

Judging from the information on the Indiegogo, there’s some major technical challenges the company claims to have solved, but won’t actually show how or demonstrate they’ve solved them. In fact, they make some bold claims while showing blatant Photoshops of stock photography.

Doug Soltys is the former Editor in Chief of BlackBerryCool as well as a former employee of BlackBerry as its Blog Manager. Today, he spoke on CBC’s The National to discuss the partnership between Apple and IBM.

It’s an interesting discussion as everyone wants to know how this partnership will affect BlackBerry. While Apple doesn’t have the ultra-high security needed for government and defense, those clients may pale in significance to the clients that IBM may lure to Apple with its enterprise app offerings. Also, it’s worth noting that IBM has 430,000 employees and Apple shipped 50x what BlackBerry shipped in Q4 2013. It’s an uphill battle for sure.

Matthias Marquardt of the famed Emacberry has released a classic BlackBerry app, GPSLogger II, for BlackBerry 10 by first porting it to Android. It’s great to see the Android app play work out as some developers from the legacy OS would otherwise have been left out.

GPSLogger II is a straightforward app that tracks your physical movement over time. The app records information including your location, elevation and speed, as well as some other data. GPSLogger II is great because it’s vague enough that it can serve a myriad of purposes. If you’re an avid skier, athlete or someone into the Quantified Self, you’re bound to appreciate the simplicity and data that the app provides.

This week, the White House hosted its first Maker Faire and announced that Americans need “to be makers of things, not just consumers of things.” While we have always had engineers, hobbyists and tinkers, the maker movement is taking off. Reasons for the recent maker community growth is likely due to economies of scale reducing hardware costs, software becoming more versatile, and recent innovations like 3D printers.
