Barbara Crane is known in the world of art photography as an artist and a teacher but above all as an experimenter. Although she started off as a portrait photographer and some of her early work in Chicago definitely is reminiscent of the Lee Friedlander school of street photography, much of the work on display at her career retrospective at the Amon Carter Museum shows a willingness to try new styles and new technologies. I was fortunate enough to spend a few minutes walking though the galleries with Crane last week where we talked about her work.

One reason I was excited to talk to her was her work with Polaroid in the 1970s and the 1980s. Even though some people may think of the point-and-shoot vacation photos from childhood, but a Polaroid in the hands of an expert like Barbara Crane is a little different thing. “The bright reds and the blues and cyans in the sky are completely different that you get with other cameras,” she said. When I asked her why her Polaroids were better than someone like, say, me. “It’s all about the light.”

In her current work, Crane is embracing digital photography and printing. How many photos will you see in a museum art show that are printed on an inkjet printer like the one below?

Ricki’s got a new self-titled CD out, and Scat is hosting a release party on Saturday night (two shows at 6:30 and 8:30). Also, Ricki and Cary just found out that Scat was selected as one of Down Beat Magazine’s Top 100 Jazz Clubs, joining a list that includes legendary jazz venues like New York City’s Birdland, The Blue Note, The Oak Room at the Algonquin and The Village Vanguard. Not bad for Fort Worth, Texas, eh?

LSIFF Day Three: Let The Right One In

Whatever expectations you might have going into a vampire movie, you at the very least expect it to be scary. In that regard, Let The Right One In doesn’t live up to expectations. However, that doesn’t mean that this Swedish film from director Tomas Alfredson isn’t without splatter, immolation, ritual killings, dismemberment and acid to the face. But other than those details, this Swedish import about a 12-year-old misfit named Oskar has a crush on the 12-year-old vampire-next-door, Eli, is the sweetest little vampire movie you’ll ever see.

Yeah, I know that ’sweet’ and ‘vampire’ don’t usually go together, but this oddly engaging moving really makes you care about the main characters and the end of the movie will leave you cheering … and you really need to see the movie to appreciate the irony of that.

Of course, as I enjoyed a post-movie conversation with James M. Johnston, he was able to confirm my dimestore deconstruction of the movie. Vampire movies are always at some level about sexuality, and the story about Oskar fixation on the androgynous Eli is — at least at some level — a young boy struggling with his sexual identity. “It was a lot more pronounced in the book,” James said.

If you missed the screening at the festival, check it out first chance you get. Or wait for the American version, which is said to already be in development.

Central Market and The Fort Worth Weekly are resuming their “Burgers and Bock” concert series this week. (I can’t find a damn thing on that black hole they call a website, so I’m just going to link to it, and you can give it a go.) One of my favorite local celtic rock bands (OH MAN am I white!), The Killdares, will be the headliner for the annual Paddy O’ Party, this Saturday, the 15th. It must not be that big of a deal, though, since NEITHER website says a damn thing about it.

We probably talked about other things, too, but I’m too tired from following Bernie (and everyone else who went) on “The Official Monday Night Group Ride.” Here’s a tip, kids, for living comfortably after YOU have turned 30. If your idea of exercise is trotting up the 9 stairs between your sub-basement cube and the main office in the slightly-less-basementy part of the building, DON’T try to jump back into fitness with a 20 mile bike ride. Take it from me. I’m still numb in the you-know-where.

Steve-O listened to the Fort Worth Symphony at Carnegie Hall this weekend. He thought it went off well, and so did both the Star-Telegram and the NY Times. (Quick correction: the new piece was a fresh arrangement of a 1999 composition.)

Discussion of the recent events at the Lone Star Film Society, as well as our coverage of the possible effects on the Lone Star Film Festival.
The Stock Show is going on downtown. Pete took some awesome pictures, and the Star-Telegram is providing some excellent coverage. Think of them as the play-by-play and us as the color commentary.
Budget Travel magazine writes up the 25 things they love about Fort Worth, MSNBC picks it up, and while we like some of it, we’re all bothered by the fact that our WORLD-CLASS museums (how many times do we have to say that before people take notice?) come in at number 8.
Steve sat down with Darren Woods, Managing Director of the Fort Worth Opera, to talk about the upcoming season and where he thinks the Opera in Fort Worth is headed. Look for his writeup on that interview later this week. Also, I commit to going to one of the shows with Steve, despite my general avoidance of all things opera.
