In slippery conditions at the Gabba, West Coast went in hoping to seal a top 4 position and first Qualifying clash against Collingwood at the MCG in 2 weeks time.

Brisbane weren't about to let West Coast get there easily, dominating the opening passages of the game and kicking the first 2 goals. However, West Coast were able to reply with 4 of the next 5 goals to go into the first change ahead by 4 points.

Brisbane were able to wrestle back control in the second quarter kicking 3 goals and keeping West Coast goalless.

They continued where they left off in the 3rd quarter, kicking the first 2 goals to take them out to a 29 point lead.midway through. West Coast were able to steady the ship with the next 3 goals including a freakish buzzer beating snap goal by Ashton Hams from the pocket to wittle the margin down to only 2 points in Brisbane's favour.

West Coast hit the front after Quinten Lynch kicked the opening goal of the last quarter, but a quick reply from Sam Sheldon saw the margin back in Brisbane's favour. 3 consecutive goals to the Eagles followed and looked to have the game under control, but Aaron Cornelius goal against the run of play gave some hope to the home team. However, West Coast held their composure and were able to finish the job, winners by 8 points.

My Eagles Votes

5 – Chris Masten – kicked 3 valuable goals and worked hard throughout the game in both directions, in particular shining in the second half – 31 disposals, 16 contested possessions, 7 tackles, 3 goals 1 behind.

4 – Luke Shuey – once again very effective around the stoppages, he was the cleanest midfielder on the night – 20 disposals, 13 contested possessions, 8 clearances, 5 I50s, 7 tackle, 5 1%ers, 1 goal, 1 goal assist

3 – Nic Naitanui – his ruckwork was outstanding on occasions, won plenty of contested football and was one of the few players that was clean with his handling and use of the ball – 15 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 23 hitouts, 5 clearances, 7 1%ers

2 – Scott Selwood – an effective clearance winner, his hardness around the ball was valuable – 21 disposals, 5 clearances, 8 tackles, 1 behind

1 – Matt Priddis - wasn’t pretty and at times was sloppy, but worked tirelessly to force the ball forward - 25 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 5 marks, 6 clearances, 9 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s, 6 tackles, 1 goal, 2 goal assists

My 'Brownlow' Votes

3 - Tom Rockliff - was the Lion's key midfield player in a hardworking performance - 30 disposals, 17 contested posssesions, 10 clearances, 13 tackles, 7 1%ers, 2 goals 1 behind.

Key Players

Simon Black

Brisbane's most highly credentialed midfielder is still going strong at 32, with his disposal numbers even up slightly from last year.He would be the most likely candidate to face a tag from Scott Selwood.

Luke Power

Brisbane's only other remaining member from their triple premiership years, normally performs well against West Coast. His disposals are down from previous years, but he is hitting the scoreboard more frequently this year, averaging a goal per game He is most likely to go head to head with Andrew Embley, if not tagged, which would be an intriguing match-up.

Tom Rockliff

Finds a prolific amount of the football, his 27.8 disposals per game has him ranked 8th in the league for disposals per game this season, impressive for a 3rd year player - just as importantly he managed to hit the scoreboard well last week with 2 goals and 1 goal assist to add amongst his 30 disposals - likely to go head to head against Luke Shuey, who although doesn't quite get the same disposals numbers, has a large impact with what gets has translating to goals and scoring opportunities for others, Brisbane will need a similar strong performance from him this week if they are to challenge West Coast.

Matt Leuenberger

The lean mobile Leuenberger who models himself on one of his direct opponents this week, has been good this season, particularly the past 2 weeks with strong games against Gold Coast (19 disposals, 8 marks, 42 hitouts, 2 goals, 1 goal assist) and Collignwood (24 disposals, 7 marks 33 hitouts). He faces a ruckman's toughest assignment in footy at the moment going up against Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.

Daniel Rich

The powerful, long kicking midfielder was the substitute last week, but should get a full game in his second game back from injury this week. His left foot is always a threat of busting even the best zone open so he can't be given too latitude. If in the midfield he could find himself opposed to Andrew Gaff who will test his weak aerobic capacity or if played forward he might get some attention from the returning Pat McGinnity.

Prediction

A bottom 4 vs a top 4 team should produce an obvious and clear result regardless of location, but Brisbane have been much improved in the last 3 weeks with a narrow 5 point loss to Adelaide, a 62 point win over local rivals, Gold Coast and an 18 point loss to reigning premiers and current top of the ladder, Collingwood, at the MCG. I think they'll put up a decent fight for part of the game, but in the end I expect West Coast to be too good.

West Coast by 35 points.

Essendon started well in the first going goal for goal with West Coast (one thanks to an interchange infringement), but West Coast controlled proceedings for the rest of the term with their forward press, before a late goal to David Zaharakis brought Essendon some hope with the margin only 9 points in West Coast's favour.

In the second quarter, both teams were sloppy with their skills and had difficulty kicking the ball through the big sticks, with the first goal coming 17 minutes in to Dean Cox. However, Essendon replied quickly and had a good run of momentum kicking the next 2 as well as another buzzer beater, this time for Stewart Crameri, which gave the visitors a single point lead at the main break.

West Coast dominated the 3rd quarter early with their forward press at it's best during the game, but 4 consecutive behinds didn't translate well to the scoreboard before Kennedy finally converted accurately and Scott Selwood not to soon afterwards. Essendon replied quickly as they had done throughout the game, with 2 consecutive goals, but a concussion to captain Jobe Watson, who was ruled out of the game, restricted their bench to only 2 (Andrew Welsh was injured earlier in the game where their substitute, Nathan Lovett Murray, was activated) and from there onwards West Coast dominated with 12 of the next 14 goals to run out clear 57 point winners.

My Eagles Votes

5 - Luke Shuey - very good across the entire game with his prolific clearance winning and important involvement in the team's run and spread from congestion - 23 disposals, 13 contested possessions, 11 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal, 2 behninds 1 goal assist

4 - Daniel Kerr - got the ball early but was a bit down on his usual effectiveness, however that changed in the second half where he was as dynamic and excellent as ever with his inside work at stoppages and also in kicking and setting up important goals - 25 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 2 goals

3 - Josh Kennedy - worked hard throughout the game in providing the focal point for the midfield with a good scoreboard return - 19 disposals, 9 marks (2 contested, 3 inside 50), 6 inside 50, 7 1%ers, 4 goals, 3 behinds, 2 goal assists

2 - Scott Selwood - tough job of being opposed to Watson for 3 quarters and matched him for impact with his work inside the contest - 23 disposals, 16 contested possessions, 6 clearances, 8 tackles, 1 goal, 1 behind

1 - Nic Naitanui - quite first half, but impacted the contest well in the second half with his ruck/clearance work - 10 disposals, 1 contested mark ,26 hitouts, 5 clearances, 5 1%ers, 1 goal

My Brownlow Votes

Link

Key Players

Jobe Watson

Arguably Essendon's most important player given their lack of strong bodied, prolific contested ball and clearance winning players in the midfield, their captain is IMO the most vital cog in their engine. Scott Selwood seems his most likely opponent as he faces one of his most challenging assignments of the year.

Patrick Ryder

After copping some criticism for his efforts mid-season Ryder has turned his form around. He has been in good form the last 2 weeks in particular where he has been Essendon's first ruck with Hille spending most his time forward and it is likely he will play the same role this week with the big task of facing the Cox/Naitanui duo (Naitanui playing his 50th game this week) - it is important for Essendon's chances that he at least breaks even in the ruck knocks and exerts plenty of positive influence around the ground.

Brent Stanton

The hard running outside midfielder has shown some strong form in the last 3 weeks amassing 94 disposals in the last 3 weeks including 39 disposals, 11 marks and 2 goals 1 behind last week. On the long, narrow Subiaco Oval his run will be important. It is likely he will face a head to head battle with either Andrew Embley or Andrew Gaff.

David Zaharakis

A close friend of Luke Shuey's, Zaharakis has been a strong performer since his arrival at AFL. He is very good at finding space out the back of the zone and kicking running goals from around the 50m mark. When Essendon get it through the zone, he is one to watch out for as his finishing skills on the run are typically very good. He will likely go head to head with either Andrew Embley or Andrew Gaff when he plays midfield and perhaps Beau Waters when he plays forward.

Prediction

The Bombers are in the midst of a good run of form in their quest for September action. If this game was in Melbourne they would probably go in favourites, but a poor away record particularly Subiaco has been a weakness for them for many seasons and I expect their lean interstate record to continue in what should be a quite a good contest.

West Coast by 25 points

Looking at all the statistics apart from the score, you would've expected Melbourne to be leading at the first change, but poor disposal was their showstopper as West Coast were able to punish their mistakes and lead by 12 points.

A dominant second quarter by West Coast put Melbourne on the ropes with the lead extending out to 47 points at the main break.

West Coast's cursed 3rd quarter run continued as the Dees were able to close the gap to 32 points and give themselves a sneaky chance going into the last, however some missed opportunities could've narrowed the large half time margin closer.

The last quarter was bereft of goals until Cox's the 15 minute mark and a lack of fight from Melbourne allowed West Coast seal the win by 48 points.

My Eagles Votes

5 - Andrew Gaff - hard running and neat disposal again stood out in a consistent 4 quarter game - 33 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal assist

4 - Andrew Embley - his hard running forward of the ball created many scoring opportunties for West Coast, particularly during the dominant patch in Q2 - 25 disposals, 1 goal 2 behinds, 1 goal assist

3 - Scott Selwood - kept Scully to a lowly game, whilst impact himself at the contest - 15 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 5 clearances, 12 tackles, 1 goal

2 - Will Schofield - was solid in defence and provided good attacking rebound run - 18 disposals

1 - Luke Shuey - shutdown late in the game for precautionary reasons, but impacted well with his clearance work and run early - 16 disposals, 6 inside 50s, 0 goals 2 behinds, 1 goal assist

My Brownlow Votes

3 - Andrew Gaff - see above

2 - Andrew Embley - see above

1 - Jeremy Howe - was the Dees only consistent shining light throughout the game - 18 disposals, 10 marks (5 contested), 3 goals 1 behind.

Richmond challenged the naysayers battling hard in the first quarter with their clean ball movement and quick forward entries from centre square stoppages keeping them in the game, the margin only 7 points in West Coast's favour at quarter time.

A dominant second quarter display by Nic Naitanui helped West Coast extend their lead to 34 by the main break.

West Coast looked as if they'd put their 3rd quarter woes behind them as the margin extended to 45 points with 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd, but Richmond were able to kick the last 3 goals of the term to wittle the margin down to 27 points and with some handy momentum heading into the last.

However a strong last quarter display led by rising star contender, Luke Shuey, saw West Coast home as they kicked 5 unanswered goals - the final margin 57 points.

My Eagles Votes

5 - Luke Shuey - a strong 4 quarter all-round midfield performance including a powerful last quarter effort to stave off a Richmond comeback - 30 disposals, 12 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 6 I50s, 7 tackles, 1 goal 2 behinds, 1 goal assist

4 - Daniel Kerr - provided his trademark combo of grunt and class in tight when the game was up for grabs - 34 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 8 clearances

3 - Nic Naitanui - an injury curtailed him in the last quarter, but a dominant 2nd quarter performance which included a massive 4 contested marks and 2 goals 1 behind was much needed after Richmond's solid start to the game and Dean Cox's injury - 14 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 5 marks (5 contested), 16 hitouts, 5 clearances, 5 free kicks for, 2 goals, 1 behind

2 - Brad Ebert - took some strong grabs, won important contests and hit the scoreboard with 4 goals and 1 goal assist...couldn't ask for much more - 21 disposals, 6 marks (2 contested), 4 goals 1 behind, 1 goal assist

1 - Mark Nicoski - good 4 quarter performance as a forward pocket kicking accurately with 6 opportunist goals and providing strong defensive pressure - 14 disposals, 5 inside 50s, 6 tackles, 6 goals

Honourable mentions to Jack Darling, Andrew Gaff, Quinten Lynch and Scott Selwood for their performances.

My 'Brownlow' votes

3 - Luke Shuey - see above

2 - Daniel Kerr - see above

1 - Nic Naitanui - see above

Sydney started of fastest with 2 goals before West Coast had even hit the scoreboard, but the quarter ended up finishing on level terms thanks a couple of goals to Quinten Lynch and a goal moments before the quarter time siren from a ruck stoppage by Nic Naitanui.

Sydney again scored the opening two goals of the second quarter before West Coast replied with one of their own - the scores finished 7 points in Sydney’s advantage at the main break.

The early quarter dominance of the Swans continued in the third with another two unanswered goals before West Coast staged a strong fight back kicking the last 4 goals of the term to go into the final quarter with a 1 goal lead.

Luke Shuey’s goal in the opening minute was an ideal start to the last quarter for West Coast, but Sydney stayed in the contest going goal for goal for the next 2, before finishing West Coast off with the last 4 goals of the game consecutively to go home 2 goal winners.

My Eagles Votes

5 – Dean Cox - another strong ruck/midfield performance with good effect when forward. Won the HMAS Medal for BOG – 20 disposals, 12 contested possessions, 5 marks (2 contested), 2 goals 38 hitouts –

4 – Quentin Lynch – 11 disposals, 6 marks (3 contested), 4 goals, 1

3 – Nic Naitanui – 14 disposals, 10 contested possessions, 5 tackles, 7 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 goal

2 – Scott Selwood – performed an effective tagging job on the in-form ROK – 18 disposals, 6 tackles

1 - Jack Darling – 14 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, 1 goal assist – provided a strong marking target at half forward and once again very good defensive pressure that should of been rewarded on at least one occasion

My 'Brownlow' Votes

3 – Adam Goodes – a strong all-round performance where he featured in the both the forward half as a marking target and midfield in the last quarter, where he produced a vintage display to help Sydney to the win – 21 disposals, 7 marks (4 contested), 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 3 goals, 2 behinds, 1 goal assist

2 – Dean Cox – see above

1 – Kieran Jack – held Daniel Kerr to very little and was influential around the stoppages – 23 disposals, 12 tackles, 6 clearances, 10 contested possessions, 1 goal assist

Key Players

West Coast

Luke Shuey – despite only playing 6 games prior to this season he has led the Eagles midfield so far this season with 2 impressive all-round games where he has won hard ball and clearances, found space and pushed forward to kick goals, particularly last week where he was close to best on ground. An even bigger performance will be required this week with a much more seasoned and stronger bodied midfield on the opposing side

Josh Kennedy – with Mark LeCras out it becomes important he continues to show the leadership in the forward half of the ground that he did last week. West Coast’s defensive forward pressure has been very impressive in the opening few games, particularly last week thanks to his efforts setting a great example in the early stages of the game.

Daniel Kerr – he had a mixed game last week – his first AFL game for almost a year, but looked to have got rid of most of the cobwebs as the game progressed. He is likely to face close attention again this week from Kieran Jack, who unlike most taggers can really hurt you going the other way, so he better be prepared to work hard both ways.

Sydney

Adam Goodes – one of the most decorated players in the game with 2 Brownlow’s and B&F’s and 3 AA’s, spending more time at half forward last season and during the early stages of this season, he is always a potential threat to any opposition with his game-breaking abilities.

Ryan O’Keefe – he secured the 3 Brownlow votes the last time these 2 teams met with 27 disposals despite West Coast trying a number of opponents on him. He has started off this season in fine form with 31 and 27 disposal games to open his account. Perhaps Pat McGinnity will be given the big job of attempting to nullify him.

Shane Mumford – he’s faced with the mammoth task of taking on the best ruck duo in the league without any significant support. If Sydney are to win the midfield battle it is important he exerts his physicality in the ruck and pushes forward with good effect to make both Cox and Naitanui more accountable.

Prediction

West Coast/Sydney encounters have traditionally been very close with a few exceptions, such as last year’s 52 point win to Sydney. This year the teams seem much more evenly matched with many of West Coast’s experienced players in excellent form and a number of young players following their lead – keep a defibrillator and a shot of adrenalin close by because I think this one’s going to be a close one.

West Coast by 4 points.

West Coast started very promisingly and were the dominant team in the first quarter with 10 scoring shots to 5, however inaccuracy prevented them from building a substantial lead with only a 10 point buffer separating the teams.

2 early goals in the second quarter for West Coast put a struggling Port Adelaide on the ropes, but they were able to hit back quickly kicking the next goal and 3 of the next 4 goals to reduce the margin to less than a goal. However West Coast repeated the dose kicking another 3 to Port’s 1 in the last 10 minutes of the quarter to extend their first quarter advantage a further 9 points for a 19 point lead at half time.

Port’s had less scoring shots than West Coast in the 3rd quarter (6 to 9), but their superior accuracy allowed them to convert 5 to goals, whilst West Coast only converted 3 to goals, and whittle the margin down to 12 points.

An early goal to Travis Boak to begin the last quarter and signs looked ominous for West Coast as Port reduced the margin to less than a goal, however they never managed to get beyond that point, as West Coast who had led all day secured a well deserved 18 point win kicking 4 goals to 2 for the remainder of the quarter.

My Eagles votes

5 – Andrew Embley – at his best on a wing, backing up last weeks performance with even better one this week – 32 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 11 marks, 5 inside 50s, 4 goals

4 – Luke Shuey – very impressive - provided plenty of grunt and power from the contests and stoppages whilst pushing forward with great effect too - in particularly put up an excellent last quarter performance to get West Coast over the line – 27 disposals, 16 contested possessions, 6 clearances, 10 inside 50s, 3 goals

3 – Dean Cox – dominated the ruck with Naitanui whilst providing good presence around the ground – 21 disposals, 5 marks (2 contested), 5 clearances, 6 1%ers,

2 – Josh Kennedy – provided a strong leadership and presence in the forward half. Was particularly inspirational early with some excellent run-down tackles setting the tone for the day – 14 disposals, 5 marks (2 contested), 5 inside 50s, 3 goals

1 – Matt Rosa – a very solid link-up game with good defensive pressure – 25 disposals, 8 inside 50s, 6 tackles, 6 1%ers, 1 goal

My 'Brownlow' votes

2 – Luke Shuey (WCE) – see above

The first quarter was one of two halves with North Melbourne controlling the early proceedings with quick, clean ball movement from half back through the centre of the ground helping them reach a 3 goal to 0 lead by the 13 minute mark. West Coast hit back with 3 consecutive goals of their own helped by a number of North Melbourne disposal errors in defence created by the strong forward press, before North Melbourne kicked a late goal through Liam Anthony to go into the first change with a 3 point advantage.

West Coast gained an early ascendancy in the second quarter with back to back goals before North Melbourne replied with 2 of their own. Jack Darling’s first AFL goal in 22 minute mark helped give the home side a 5 point lead going into the main break.

West Coast kicked the first goal of the 3rd quarter however it ended tragically with the goalkicker, West Coast’s 2010 Best and Fairest winner Mark LeCras, going down with what looked to be a serious groin (adductor) strain that could put him on the sidelines for a long stretch. The team’s momentum was someone thwarted and North Melbourne were able to outscore West Coast, 4 goals to 2 for the rest of the quarter to put themselves up by a 4 points going into the last change.

West Coast quickly recaptured the lead with 3 unanswered goals before North Melbourne gave one last kick, fighting back with 2 quick goals. However it wasn’t to be for the injury depleted North Melbourne outfit, with Luke Shuey slamming the door shut and kicking the sealer at the 26 minute mark before West Coast pushed numbers into defence to clog the game up and ensure victory.

My Eagles Votes

5 – Dean Cox – he capitalised on the North Melbourne’s lack of ruck power with a dominating 29 disposals, 8 marks, 29 hitouts, 2 goals 1 behind, with his outstanding ground coverage allowing him to have an influence in midfield, defence and up forward . He also showed great commitment to continue to play on in Q4 despite being limited by cramp and was still able to exert some influence on the play.

4 – Adam Selwood –significantly quelled the dangerous Brent Harvey’s influence on the game restricting him to just 11 disposals, 3 marks and 1 goal, whilst also picking up 17 disposals and 6 clearances himself.

3 – Andrew Embley – wound back the clock with a strong 4 quarter performance on a wing – 28 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal and 2 goal assists.

2 – Luke Shuey – wasn’t at his cleanest, but was persistent around the stoppages and contests in forcing the ball forward. Also kicked the match sealing goal – 19 disposals, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50s 1 goal, 2 goal assists

1 – Mark Nicoski – impressed in a new half forward role, pushing forward of the ball very effectively to create a scoring avenue – 21 dipsosals , 10 contested possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 2 goals, 5 behinds, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal assist

My Brownlow Votes

3 – Dean Cox (WCE) – see above

The last 6 premiership winning sides from 2005-2010 have had an average of 4 rookie listed players in their GF team - Collingwood 2010 had the most with 7 players recruited by them via the rookie drafted and Geelong 2007 & 2009 the least with only 2 players recruited by them via the rookie draft.

In the past 3 All-Australian Teams (2008, 2009, 2010) former rookie-listed players have made up 11/66 spots offered (17%) with 8 different players, in comparison:

Picks 1-10 have made up 20/66 (30%)
Picks 11-20 have made up 5/66 (7.6%)
Picks 21-30 have made up 3/66 (4.5%)
Pick 31-PSD have made up 20/66 (30%)
Pre-draft selections have made up 8/66 (12%)

...not too bad for a bunch of ‘left-overs’

Here is a mix of key information and personal opinion on our club's 4 newest recruits:

Pre-Season Draft Selection 2 – Blayne Wilson (Peel Thunder)

As per expected since his addition to our training list a couple of weeks ago.

Blayne Wilson is a somewhat similar story to Jack Darling - a player that has been potentially undervalued due to recruiter’s perceptions of future potential and doubt vs production (what he’s actually achieved so far).

He was a very good in 2008 and 2009 at under 16 and under 18 level, respectively, earning All-Australian honours in both years championships (impressively in 2009 as a bottom-aged player).

Blayne Wilson takes a mark vs Vic Country

He also earnt a scholarship in 2009 for the AIS-AFL academy and made his WAFL League debut for Peel Thunder playing 4 games averaging 13 disposals and 4 marks.

He was eligible in 2009 to be pre-listed as one of Gold Coast’s 12x 17 year old recruits and although he was strongly considered, in the end he just missed out.

In 2010 he wasn’t as impressive at the U18 Championships but still quite good averaging 18 disposals and 5 marks per game at 78% disposal efficiency.

He produced similar WAFL League numbers averaging 13 disposals and 5 marks from 7 games.

He is an excellent reader of the play, and is considered one of the best kicks and decision makers in this year’s draft producing elite numbers.

The concern is that he lacks athleticism (pace, agility and endurance) for his role, isn’t in good enough condition physically and can only play one position (medium general defender).

It has been reported he has struggled with OP – so perhaps the athleticism criticism is unwarranted and the hope is, that once he can get over he can improve it to a higher level that meets or exceeds AFL standards.

He is some chance to debut in his first AFL season given his experience, but the number one priority will be getting him into a fit condition.

Rookie Selection 10 – Tim Houlihan (West Coast)

A bit of last minute creative list management was needed to free-up one more list pace so we could use selection 28 in the National Draft.

It seems the club did the right thing by him in honouring their intention to keep him at the club, selecting him with the first selection in the rookie draft, after not having much luck with a serious foot injury derailing his 2010 season.

He had a good finish to the 2009 AFL season averaging 23 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles and 1 score per game as well as polling a single Brownlow vote from 7 games.

As an outside midfielder he has very good pace and endurance, but needs to continue work on improving his kicking accuracy which he has made good progress doing so at the club.

Rookie Selection – 27 – Anton Hamp (Claremont)

Anton Hamp is one of the quiet achievers of this year’s draft.

He played WAFL colts for much of this year producing respectable numbers of 14 disposals, 4 marks and 2 goals per game.

Anton Hamp

He was named in the WA U18 squad this year, but only played 1 game in the 2010 U18 Championships series where he was largely anonymous.

It seems his testing at the AFL National Combine definitely helped improve his standing – with a standing VJ of 71cm, running VJ of 80cm, 20m time of 2.91s, agility of 8.38s, repeat sprint test of 24.30s, beep test of 13.10 and 3km of 11.12 – all standing out as very good or better.

He is well regarded for his off-field approach and is considered a very intelligent and respectable young man.

As a slim built key forward prospect, it’s very unlikely Hamp will push for AFL games in his first season – if he can gain a consistent spot in Claremont’s League team that would be a great achievement in itself for him.

Interestingly, from the interview with Trevor Woodhouse on the West Coast Eagles Official Website post-draft, it seems the clubs preference was to recruit Tim Milera here – the Port Adelaide Magpie’s small forward who was chosen by Adelaide with rookie selection 14 in the end – but it didn’t eventuate as they anticipated and the club was happy to secure Hamp who was next on their list.

Rookie Selection 44 – Jeremy McGovern (Claremont)

Another Claremont boy and another key position prospect for the club.

I actually know very little about him so I’m going purely off reports here...

He is originally from South Albany and the son of former Sydney and Fremantle player Andrew McGovern.

He wasn’t named in the WA U18 squad, but has played colts for Claremont this year, averaging 10.5 disposals, 3.6 marks and 17.4 hitouts from 17 games. Although these statistics indicate he has spent considerable time in the ruck, at 194cm he’s unlikely to be competitive at AFL and the club accordingly sees him as a tall forward prospect .

Comments from Trevor Woodhouse indicate the club is willing to give him time to develop at the lower levels (3 years?) – similar to Hamp, if he can gain a consistent spot in Claremont’s League team next year that would be fine first season for him.

Overall

1 medium defender, 1 outside midfielder and 2 key position forwards was the positional mix we ended up with.

We got Tim Houlihan back and he has showed so far in his brief career that he can be a handy player at AFL and we also acquired Blayne Wilson who has been training with us for a couple of weeks and has performed at a good level through his underage career that belies his late selection in the order.

To many people’s disappointment we didn’t end up with a crumbing small forward, although it sounds like we did try to acquire one with Tim Milera high up on our list. That said we do have some prospects we’ve recruited in recent year that can play that role in Hams who has played the role well at AFL so far and Broome, Weedon and Neates who could potentially do so in the future.

Personally, I was hoping to see at least one fresh faced 20-24 year old player from a state league competition recruited like we did with the Ashton Hams and Andrew Strijk recruits last year - I like the idea of using the rookie draft to primarily select well performed state league players that can put immediate pressure on the playing group for spots in the team or undervalued U18 players with senior state league level experience rather than raw project players that haven’t played at any levels higher than colts – that’s my own philosophy for the rookie recruiting in a nutshell...

All the best to the new recruits!

*Whilst they occurred in 2010 Draft Period and the 2010 calendar year for some reason yesterday's drafts are officially called the 2011 AFL Pre-Season Draft and 2011 AFL Rookie Draft – don’t ask me why!

For those that have been in cricket or perhaps festive mode and not keeping recent football happenings, Ash Hansen’s de-listing freed up a main list spot which will be filled with our first and only pick in the PSD.

So who are the best prospects available? Who is being mentioned as likely possibilities? Who will we consider?

Well, there’s been strong suggestion that we will add Tim Houlihan, who many thought was unlucky to be de-listed, back to the list with either our first PSD selection or our first rookie draft selection.

We were linked to Rhys Cooyou, a lightning fast small flanker, in the National draft at selection 29, although that may just have been pure fluff talk.

Tyler Chalwell, the athletic tall utility from East Fremantle’s colts side has excited many a youtube recruiter with his highlights package is a fan favourite and his selection would appease many.

West Perth colt’s pacy, strong tackling small forward flank Jordan Eades has had a similar effect on the fans and to a lesser extent Hayden Yarran, another small forward, from the same colts team.

Having not see any colts football this year I can’t comment on the merits of selecting any of those players, but I have seen the entire 2010 U18 Championships series and my top 5 ‘best-fit for us’ state U18 players that were overlooked in the 2010 AFL National Draft would be:

Justin Monaco

Strong bodied tall hybrid defender from East Fremantle colts and represented WA at the U18 Championships this year

His reading of the play, run and carry and ball are all positive features of his play.

The concern is his concentration lapses and loose checking at times.

Nathan Batley

Lightning quick small rebounding defender from that represented SA at the 2010 U18 Championships.

His line-breaking and ball use were both positive features of his game.

Question mark over his defensive game

Tom Schneider

Hard working small midfielder/half forward that represented Vic Metro at U18 championships

His reading of the play, work-rate and neat ball use were all features

The main concern is over his lack of pace as a small player.

He is also the brother of St Kilda’s Adam Schneider.

Sam Gray

Smart small midfielder/half forward

Very good contested ball winner, team ethic and general smarts

Main concerns is over his lack of height

Blayne Wilson

Smart half back general

Very good kick on both sides and a high class play reader

The main concern is over his lack of all-round athleticism

I also like Northern Knights and Vic Metro’s Darcy Barden a lot as a player (I had him in my top 40 U18 players), but with Jack Darling’s recruit he wouldn’t add much to the squad...

I am a big fan of ‘mature aged’ prospects (20-25 year old state league players) – there have been a number that have offered good immediate ROI in the last few years at AFL (obviously the test is whether they can sustain it over the longer term compared to the younger players) – including the likes of Andrew Strijk, Callum Wilson and Ashton Hams for us who’ve all been upgraded to the rookie list and Michael Barlow, Greg Broughton, Ben Howlett, Kyle Hardingham, Alex Silvagni for opposition clubs.

Blayne Wilson handballs vs Vic Metro

Having not watched significant amounts of WAFL/SANFL/VFL this year I have to go on other’s calls, but some of the mature aged players that have been talked up by watchers include:

From the WAFL the guys that have been discussed as potential rookie recruits have been:

Caleb Shadbolt (West Perth) – hard running medium utility flank that has been compared to Paul Duffield by his coach

Nathan Phillips (South Fremantle) – skilful medium midfielder/forward that won South Fremantle’s B&F despite going down with a knee injury mid-season.

Jarrod Ninyette (Claremont) – slippery small utility flank that was part of Claremont’s GF losing team

Kane Mitchell (Claremont) – tough, hard working small utility part of Claremont’s GF losing team

Ian Richardson (Claremont) – clever small forward that has been on the radar for the past 3 years and also part of Claremont’s GF losing team.

Chad Jones (Claremont) – remember him? Goal kicking tall lead up full forward that topped the WAFL’s goal kicking this year

Ryan Brabazon (Claremont) – pacy small midfielder that used to be on Sydney’s list

Kiefer Yu (Claremont) – skilful small midfielder that played a few games for Claremont before injury struck.

James Thompson (Claremont) – remember him? Athletic key defender that was part of Claremont’s losing GF team

Clint Garlett (Claremont) – smart small midfielder that was previously with the AIS academy and part of WA’s U18 squad last year

Aaron Sweet (East Perth) – hard running medium defender that was part of the 2007 WA U18 squad

From the SANFL I’ve heard Jonathan Giles, Nick Lower and Brayden O’Hara mentioned on numerous occasions.

From the VFL the names that consistently get mentioned are Myles Sewell, Ed Curnow, Michael Hibberd, Cam Pederson, Anton Woods, Matthew Little and Mitch Keddell.

Finally the AFL rejects – yay!

There are quite decent ones this year IMO – moreso than the usual – full list of them here:

Apart from Bachar Houli who has his heart set on Richmond and John Anthony who seems destined to go to Fremantle - the 2 I think are particularly good fits for us are Jarrad Blight and Rhys O’Keeffe

Jarrad Blight, I discussed him in my trade week preview – I had him in my top 20 U18 players pre-draft in 2008 and Colin Wisbey had him 11th IIRC.

Rhys O’Keeffe, who is a football smart, hard running medium utility flank that uses the ball neatly with good kicking penetration.

He was drafted at pick 67 to Carlton in 2008 and I rated him in my top 30 U18 players that year as did a number of others.

Unfortunately for him, he has been very much down on luck with injury over the last 2 years and has struggled to get on the park – if he passes our medical, I wouldn’t mind trumping Carlton who I think are looking to re-draft him onto their rookie list.

Ashley Hansen - 2006 AFL Grand Final

As per expected to open up a main list spot that will be filled in the 2010 AFL Pre-Season Draft.

Whilst he won’t be remembered as a club great – despite struggling with injury issues throughout his time at the club, he had a very solid career at West Coast playing ? games, kicking ? goals, and was an important member of the 2006 AFL premiership winning side as a lead up half forward.

If he isn’t picked up by another club in the upcoming drafts – then I wish him all the best to him for his life post-football...

It will be interesting to see whether he continues to play WAFL, is given an off-field role with the club in some capacity or perhaps finds a role in the media.
