Spotify Sunday - My Top Touring Songs of 2013

Hello everyone and welcome to my new feature, 'Spotify Sunday'. Every few weeks I'll be sharing a different themed playlist with you - all theatre based of course - and to kick it off this week here are my top show tunes from some of the productions that are - or will be - heading to a venue near you in the next 12 months. I haven't been getting to London as often as I'd like this year so I find myself relying more and more on touring productions to get my theatre fix, and there are some crackers coming up.

First on the playlist has to be Defying Gravity, the song that I hold responsible for fuelling this little obsessi... em hobby. Wicked starts its debut UK tour in November and I think it's going to be one that gets everyone talking. I am hoping for some cast announcements soon.

You Can't Stop The Beat from the bright and colourful Hairspray is next on the list. After seeing the show last weekend this track has been a firm iPod fav, this is such an upbeat song that is sure to perk you up no matter what mood you're in.

Song number 3 is the heart-wrenching With You from the equally heart-wrenching show, Ghost. I first saw Ghost in London with Rebecca Trehearn as understudy Molly so i'm thrilled she has been cast for the lead role in the tour - she is awesome.

9 to 5 was one of those musicals I went in with no expectations, I was reviewing it for Backstage Pass and to be honest didn't have high hopes. Boy was I proved wrong... I loved it! 'Get Out and Stay Out' was the 11 o'clock number and has such relatable lyrics that I had it downloaded before I was home.

Memory is one of those show tunes that most people have heard, and has achieved a somewhat iconic status over the years. I haven't actually seen Cats before so I can't wait to see this classic musical come to life on stage.

Last but not least the fab Take Me Or Leave Me from my current show of the moment Rent. After seeing the anniversary concert I have gone into full on 'Rent head' mode. There was an announcement on Twitter that the concert may tour again in November... roll on!

You can't stop the beat...

If you fancy a fun and feel-good night out then grab your can of Ultra Clutch and head to the Kings Theatre, because Hairspray is in town. Be prepared to be transported to 1962, a time when big hair was all the rage and the integration between black and white was not.

Set in Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of school girl Tracy Turnblad who dreams of one day being one of the 'nicest kids in town' and appearing on 'The Corny Collins Show' - a show she watches religiously with best friend Penny Pingleton. When a spot opens up Tracy jumps at the chance to audition, sparking a chain of events that's going to change her life for good.

Freya Sutton was the perfect choice for ambitious dreamer Tracy Turnblad. She had so much energy and sang every song with such enthusiasm.

Mark Benson was hilarious as Tracy's mother (and recluse) Edna Turnblad. His lines were delivered with great comedic timing and I particulary enjoyed the joint scenes with Wilbur Turnblad played by Paul Rider.

Special shoutout goes to Sandra Marvin and her take on Motormouth Maybelle. What an impact she made on the audience with her powerhouse voice and sassiness.

Hairspray is one of those shows that has something for everyone. A bright set, colourful costumes and some of the most catchy showtunes. I urge you to catch it while it's still in town.

Measure in love... Rent Review

Last night the 20th Anniversary concert of Rent hit Glasgow and I think it's safe to say it made a lasting impact. Rent is set in East New York and tells the story of struggling artists trying to succeed, love and live each moment like it's their last.

As this was a concert and not a full production the set was simplified with the use of video projection to guide the audience through the story. If i'm honest I did not miss the elaborate sets as I feel this stripped back version allowed the audience to connect more with the characters and let them tell the story.

The casting for this show was just perfect. All of the actors worked well together but stood out when needed. I had some reservations about Kerry Ellis playing Mimi when the casting was first announced but I was pleasantly surprised by her performance. There's no denying she plays the role differently but I feel she really makes it her own and showed a more vulnerable and endearing side to Mimi that is often missed by others.

Another surprise for me was Rory Taylor. I hadn't seen any of ITV's Superstar, so I wasn't sure what to expect but he really nailed the role of musician Roger. His performance evoked a lot of empathy for the character and his voice was so well suited to the part.

Ian Stroughair tugged at every emotion I have playing drag queen and aids sufferer, Angel. From laughing during 'Today For You', to crying as his story unfolds. Stroughair had a great balance, giving a very humorous performance but not glossing over the hard hitting problems Angel faces.

For me the star of the night was Nikki Davis-Jones and her phenomenal portrayal of outrageous and flirtatious Maureen. She had the confidence of this character spot on and her vocals were fierce. She had complete control of the stage and even had the audience mooing along with her during 'Over The Moon'. Whoever was responsible for this casting is a genius.

For me seeing Rent in this style was a real treat. You really get to focus on the music and the fabulous cast. There was a clear connection with the audience and during the final number (Seasons of Love) every person was out of their seats and singing along. I wish it had a longer run as I would have loved to catch it again. Rent has 3 shows left. Grab the last remaining tickets if you can.

If you're looking for a taste of the Big Apple closer to home, then look no further than InsideOut Productions new venture - Broadway In The Bar.

I recently attended the launch at 29 Glasgow and what a fab event it was. Talented singers, some of the best songs from musical theatre, a gorgeous space and a complementary glass of wine- what more could you want?

The show opened with the entire cast singing the upbeat 'Fabulous Baby' from the musical Sister Act. This is a fun, feel-good song which really set the vibe for the rest of the night.

We were then introduced to the first-class cast who were all amazing in their own right and worked so well off of one another.

There was a great mix of songs from well known musicals, such as Wicked, which was represented with a medley covering 4 songs from the show. One of which was No Good Deed, performed by Lauren. I've never actually seen this song performed outwith Wicked before so it was great to see a new take on it. There was also a lot of material I wasn't overly familiar with such as 'Elaborate Lives' from the musical Aida. I love being exposed to new music and finding new shows and I think events like Broadway In The Bar are the perfect way do to that.

A key theme throughout the evening was duets. From Steven and Ben's hilarious performance of the Avenue Q classic 'If You Were Gay' to Leah and Alison belting out 'In His Eyes' from Jekyll and Hyde, there really was something for everyone.

By the last few songs in Act 2 (Flashdance and It's Raining Men) everyone was out of their seats dancing and singing along, which really is a true testament to the cast and creatives.

The next Broadway in the Bar is at the Tron Theatre Glasgow on Sunday 7th of April. Grab your tickets here, this really is a must see show!

I Think I'll Try Defying Gravity- Wicked UK Tour

Ever since it was announced that Wicked was coming north of the border as part of the very first UK tour my various social media sites have turned green. On Facebook I am seeing people who I went to school with raving about it and my Twitter timeline is filled with excitement.

When I think maturely about this 'first world problem' I know that this is all good stuff. It's a good thing that people who don't normally visit theatres are getting excited about going, it's also great that fans who can't get down to London to see it regularly get the chance to experience the show close to home. But the 6 year old only child in me has taken a major huff.

I know this is crazy because Wicked is a world wide phenomenon played in many counties and seen by thousands of people, but I still sometimes think that it's mine all mine. I first saw Wicked at a point in my life where I was really trying to figure out who I was, and I believe the green girl made a lasting impression on the outcome.

So here I sit, currently looking at photos of the cupcakes that are being given out to the first 100 people who buy their tickets. Being horrified at the prices and annoyed at the fact I can get a better seat in London for a cheaper price. And contemplating how ridiculous I am that I had to write this blog in the first place. Life's weird sometimes right?

More like 54 seconds in a lift...

About 3 years ago when I first heard 'Lost In Translations' performed at the Edinburgh Fringe my curiosity about Lift the musical began. I was at the peak of my musical obsession, and had seen a fair amount of shows, but no track grabbed me as much as this one did. Fast forward to February 2013 where I sat in the bar of the Soho Theatre, waiting patiently for the house to open.

It's difficult to sum up what this show is about. I can imagine everyone to take something different away with them, but for me this was about life. Not the Hollywood version we see in movies and read in books, but real life. That part of yourself you don't want anyone to see being laid bare. The story follows 7 characters and is set in the lift at Covent Garden tube station. We see how they interact (or in some cases do not interact) with each other, and what could happen if they only took a minute to realise the possibilites for new connections are endless.

The Soho theatre is the perfect venue for Lift. It's a really intimate space which makes you feel like you are part of the production. The set, while simplistic is very effective, with a lot of the tube movement being created by body movement. There are moveable poles which are used not only as the structure of the lift but also to show a change in scene.

The book (written by Ian Watson) is very modern and relevant with great comedic timing. The characters are written and performed so well that I found myself relating to them all at some point during the show, which is pretty rare. The music (by Craig Adams) is unlike anything I have ever heard before. I already have a post dedicated to the album here with my thoughts in more detail. This is very much an ensemble piece, and it's difficult to single out one performer, but Cynthia Erivo's rendition of 'It's Been a Year' was simply stunning. So believable and raw and left me with a lump in my throat.

It's so refreshing to see something so different being created in theatre. This definitely needs to transfer or tour and I think we need more shows like it.

Glasgow Girls - Review

There are some musicals that you go to see to escape real life, then there are those that make you want to change it. The National Theatre of Scotland's latest production, Glasgow Girls is definitely the latter. Fresh from its run at the Citizens Theatre, the show is currently taking London's East End by storm.

Written by David Greig and directed by Cora Bissett, 'Glasgow Girls' tells the story of 7 girls - Emma, Agnesa, Ewelina, Amal, Jennifer and Roza – from Drumchapel High School, who leap into action when faced with the injustice of Agnesa and her family being ripped from their home in a dawn raid. This sparks a campaign about the treatment of asylum seekers and the moral issues surrounding detention centres in Scotland.

The impressive set made to look like high rise flats is effective and the cast is packed to the brim with talent, who all excel in the physical and emotional demands this show expects. Special mention to Myra McFadyen and Dawn Sievewright for their stand out performances as loveable Red Row resident Noreen and headstrong Glasgow teen Jennifer.

The music - featuring original songs from Cora Bissett, Soom T, Patricia Panther and the Kielty Brothers - is a real treat. From folk music to grime there's something for everyone.
My personal favourites are the harrowing 'Cuff You' and the upbeat 'We're at Home in Glasgow' where I grin from start to end with pride and love for my city.

This is definitely a story that had to be told. It set out to challenge views and opinions - and that it has. This is one of the best shows I have ever seen and I would urge you to catch it before the end of the run.

The Les Mis write up (about 4 years behind everyone else)

I think it's safe to say that the Les Mis movie has taken the world by storm. I can't pick up a magazine, watch a TV programme or even take the bus without seeing some form of advertising. And I, along with the masses, have Les Mis fever.

I am actually ashamed to admit this, but I didn't like the stage production (don't stone me). In fact, up until this month I would have gone as far to say it was one of the worst shows I had ever seen. Theatre is normally my escape from reality. I go to dream, and to be transported into someone else's life for a few hours - for me, this was one big dark, colourless depressing song after another. However after seeing the movie I have such an urge to give the show another try.

For me the movie was nothing short of perfection... well apart from Russell Crowe. I don't feel truly qualified to give a detailed write-up as there are so many super fan reviews out there. I do however want to share my highlights.

Anne Hathaway - Just wow! Her portrayal of Fantine was absolutely flawless. Considering the fact she only had 15 minutes of screen time, I feel she made the biggest impact. 'I Dreamed a Dream' in particular was filled with raw and exposed emotion, rendering it harrowing to watch.
Master of the House- Pairing Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen together was genius. It brought some welcome comic relief, and spotting Kerry Ellis throughout that song was a bonus.
All the scenes at the barricade - I loved all the camaraderie between the students and Eponine's death was so heart breaking - Samantha Barks did a brilliant job.

I would absolutely suggest giving this film a watch. It covers a lot of dark territory but ultimately ends with the theme of hope. Hats off to the cast and creatives - what a fantastic outcome.

Twitter was buzzing yesterday with the long awaited reveal of the cast of Rent being announced. Excitement has been building for the tour of this much loved show for months now, and I was really eager to know who would be cast to play some of the most iconic roles in musical theatre.

Whoever recruited Nikki Davis Jones in this production – I salute you. I have seen her live playing the role of Elphaba twice now, and she was phenomenal. You would have honestly thought she had been doing the part full time. I can’t wait to see how she interprets the role of Maureen.

For some reason the TV show ‘Superstar’ completely missed my radar. So after seeing everyone’s tweets raving about Rory Taylor, I had to have a little YouTube sesh and see for myself. His performances were fantastic on the show and I think he will make a great Roger.

Anyone who knows me will know I am a massive Kerry Ellis fan. I have travelled the country to see her in pretty much every role and having her star in something in my home town is a real treat. When I heard Kerry was going to be cast I assumed she would be playing Maureen, so I thought Mimi was an odd choice. I’m sure she’ll smash it as usual though and I can’t wait to hear her belt out ‘Out Tonight’.

My Favourite Shows Of 2012

With my theatre schedule for 2013 filling up nicely, I wanted to reflect on some of the best theatre shows I have seen lastyear. 2012 was definitely the year for me to broaden my theatre tastes and whilst working with the National Theatre of Scotland I have seen some of the most innovative productions.

Let's start at the very beginning (Sound of Music style)- my first show of 2012 was surprise surprise, 'Wicked'.

My birthday is in February and for the past few years it's been tradition to take a trip to London to see the musical that started this obsession that is theatre. Wicked is my escape from reality and no matter how many different casts I have seen, that inspiring feeling I get when Defying Gravity is performed remains the same.

On that same London trip I had an evening to fill and decided to dayseat for Legally Blonde - best decision ever!! The ticket cost me £10 and the experience of my first time sitting in the front row was priceless.

In 2012 I saw this show 8 times in total including the tour. It has such a feel good, upbeat score and I always left grinning from ear to ear.

Next up is one of most through provoking pieces of theatre I think I have ever seen. The National Theatre of Scotland's production of 'Macbeth'.

I was lucky enough to attend the media call which was such an interesting and brilliant experience. We got to chat to the minds behind the set and the lighting. Interviewing Alan Cumming was a particular highlight. I learned a lot that day.

Last year was also the year I realised that some of the best talent can be found right on my door step. I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring what my local theatres have had to offer. One show that really sticks in my mind was Insideout Productions show 'Company'.

The artistic director - Paul Harper-Swan - was kind enough to let me interview the cast, which was a daunting but fun event. The show was first class and deserved the sell out performances it got.

And last but by no means least, the final production (excluding panto) I saw this year was the phenomenal 'Glasgow Girls'.

This show embodies everything humanity should be about. Friendship, love and community spirit, whilst creating awareness for the hard hitting, heartbreaking subject of dawn raiding. It's transferring to London next month and is definitely a must see.

2012 was such a good year for me theatre wise and I can't wait to see what 2013 has in store.

Shrek The Halls...

I can't actually believe we're now into the first week of December and the Christmas countdown of 2012 has officially begun. The theme of this festive month is definitely giving, and the folks over at Shrek the musical have teamed up with youth homeless charity - Centrepoint to raise some money and awareness for this important cause.

So grab a cup of hot chocolate, sit back and watch this fun version of 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree'

A Powerful Beat...

Last weekend I had the pleasure of seeing the final night of 'The Rhythm of Life' at the Tron - and it didn't half go out with a bang.

As the title suggests this show takes the audience through the trials and tribulations of life by cleverly using the best songs of musical theatre past and present and covering key themes such as love, career, heartbreak and happiness.

The show opens with the Chicago classic 'All That Jazz', which works really well with the intimacy of the Tron's victorian bar.

This is the first glance at the highly talented cast that all bring something a little different to the production.

Musicality winner Donna Hazelton chatted about how winning the Channel 4 show had opened doors for her to have a career in an industry she loved. She spoke of her dream of making it to Broadway, and sang 'Broadway Baby' before blowing the roof off with 'Memories' from Cats.

Leah MacRae was absolutely hilarious, her take on 'Cabaret' had the whole room laughing. She also sang 'Popular' from that oh so famous show Wicked and absolutely nailed it. I definitely think there should be room for a Scottish G(a)linda in the land of Oz.

Steven Alexander's performance of 'Glass Slipper' from Soho Cinders and 'Gethsemene' from Jesus Christ Superstar were effortless. I have seen him perform in a few cabarets now, and he never disappoints.

Joanne Mcguiness brought a fresh and upbeat vibe to the evening. Singing musical favourites, 'The Wizard And I' and 'Somebody To Love' along with a very humorous song I hadn't heard before called 'Blue Hair'.

Morgan Carberry was a double threat, she was the musical director but also performed in the show. She sang - amongst others- the very funny 'Divas Lament' from Spamalot and accompanied the other performers on the piano.

My personal hightlight was the Grease and Les Mis medleys. The great arrangements had one song flowing really well into the next, providing the audience with an element of surprise.

The standing ovation at the end was truely deserved and chat of a tour was definitely on the cards. I'd keep your eyes peeled for this show coming to a theatre near you!

Kerry Ellis- Hippodrome Casino

This week I was back in my favourite city, seeing one of my favourite performers - Kerry Ellis - smash the first of a string of 6 nights at the Hippodrome Casino's Matcham room.

The Matcham room is such a gorgeous, intimate venue. Table seating and mood lighting made for a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff were all super friendly. It's the perfect place to host an event like this.

Supported by singers Jennifer Tierney and Caroline Deverill - who were amazing in their own right - Kerry took to the stage and opened with the popular Adele hit 'Rolling In The Deep'. This was a great crowd pleaser and set the tone for the rest of the night.

We were then treated to a whirlwind musical tour of Kerry's career, when she performed songs from shows that had - as she put it -'changed her life'.

These included 'Who Will Buy' from Oliver, where she told the audience how thrilled she was to play such an iconic role. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' from My Fair Lady, and - one of my personal favourites - ' I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Mis.

The highlight of the evening for me was definitely the Katy Perry medley of 'Teenage Dream' and 'The One That Got Away'. Kerry added such a soulful sound to what is normally a pop style song and really made it her own.

Each night audiences are treated to a guest performer. For the opening night we had the band 'Woman'. I hadn't heard any of their material before but they were fab. They performed 3 songs and were just bursting with energy that had the full room clapping along. Check them out here.

Kerry gave credit to Wicked for helping to kick start her EP and in turn her album, and performed a beautiful arrangement of 'Defying Gravity'.

One of the last songs was 'Edge of Glory', which was a great upbeat sound to round off the night. Kerry seemed so appreciative of everyone involved and could not praise her band and her musical director Craig Adams more.

It was a truly fantastic night and I urge you to try and grab the last remaining tickets!

The Rhythm of Life

Are you - like me - absolutely sick of this Scottish weather and want to do something a bit different?

This show is brought to you by Scotland's innovative entertainment company Insideout Productions, in association with Upstage Theatre Company and is set to be an impressive line up. Paul Harper- Swan - artistic director of Insideout- commented 'It's like a pick 'n' mix of your favourite musical songs'.

With this varied line up you can expect to hear some of the best songs from Musical Theatre past and present. Including Wicked, Les Mis, Cats and many more.

MacRae is joined by a host of talented performers including Musicality winner Donna Hazelton, Steven Alexander, Morgan Carberry, Gregor Firth and Joanne Mcguinness.

Hazelton, best known for winning the role of Mama Morton in the West End hit Chicago said it was a ' treat to sing these amazing songs at the Tron'.

This show is only running for one week, and with tickets selling for the bargain price of £10 - I'd get yours ASAP!

Glasgow at a glance - Doors Open Day, the Kings Theatre

Last weekend Glasgow celebrated 23 years of its successful Doors Open Day event.

This festival is designed to make the hidden gems of Glasgow more accessible . From the buildings, to the history of the people, it's all covered.

With me being a wannabe thespian (or maybe just a drama queen), I jumped at the chance of a backstage tour at the Kings Theatre . I arrived at the theatre bright eyed and bushy tailed, at a time I would not normally see on a Saturday morning, and was met by our tour guide for the day, Ronnie. His knowledge of the theatre was really extensive and he regaled us with facts and stories about the Kings throughout the years.

I'm a regular visitor there, but I never really stop and take in the impressive building that I'm sitting in and it was really interesting to see things from another point of view. I heard of the many ghost sightings that had been reported, saw inside the orchestra pit and - my personal favourite- got to stand on the stage that so many of my idols have stood on before.

The Kings run these tours all year round and if you're a lover of the arts, or really just a lover of interesting buildings , I suggest you book a place - you will not regret it!

Social Media Week Glasgow!!

From the 24th-28th of September Glasgow will be one of the many cities playing

host to all things social media.

Social media week is aimed to 'explore cultural and economic impact of social media'. The mission is to 'help people and organisations connect through collaboration, learning and the sharing of ideas and information'.

Being a social media junkie myself (there's not one SM website I can think of that I don't indulge on a daily basis) I really wanted to be involved in one way or another, so I decided to apply for a volunteer position.My application was accepted and I attended the volunteers event a few days ago. For some reason I was really nervous, meeting new people usually doesn't bother me but I was worried I was going to be overwhelmed and had maybe gotten in over my head... I could not have been more wrong. I was met with Tim and Daniela, the very enthusiastic and encouraging curators for the event, and a table full of like minded people who were ready to jump in (free wine too which is always a bonus).

If you live in and around Glasgow I'd highly recommend having a look at the event schedule and sign yourself up for some events. There's something for everyone and it's a great chance to learn more about the online world if you're interested but don't know where to start.

I'll be blogging more throughout the week but I just wanted to put the word out, I hope to see you at some events :).

The treasure trove that is eBay

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I love to shop. There's something so satisfying about finding the perfect purchase, or finally buying that certain item you've been lusting over for the past while.

However, since moving into my new flat I have seen a shift in my shopping habits - I have become obsessed with buying home items. Now I'm not talking about boring things like appliances. I mean little trinkets and fun pieces to add your stamp to your home.

And the place I find a lot of these little gems... eBay.

I got very excited when I saw a post on one of my favourite blogs - Louise at sprinkleofglitter- about 'eBay treasures' and thought I would share one of mine.

Bird house key holder-

I'll not lie when I say this cute little idea has been a lifesaver for me. I'm a forgetful soul and cant tell you the amount of times I've been frantically looking for my lost keys. The bird attaches to your actual key and by sticking the house to the side of my front door I always remember to marry them up.

I paid around £6 for mine, but have managed to find an ebay store selling them for £1.99 - Bargain!!

Autumn Goodness

As the so called British summer is coming to an end, I'm preparing to welcome my favourite season with open arms. Autumn is by far the most exciting time of the year.

A time where it's acceptable to have nights in curled up on the sofa with hot chocolate and a chunky jumper.

A time to be excited that Christmas is just around the corner, without the stress of actual present buying.

A time to break out your inner kid and dress up for Halloween...

and most importantly a time to embrace change (with the leaves falling and what not).

With this in mind I'm checking off another resolution and starting a night class in forensic psychology. Slightly nervous but mostly excited about learning something new and getting to meet new people.

The Wonderful World of YouTube

Not so long ago I saw YouTube as a great place to watch your favourite music videos, and that really was the extent of it. However, the closer you look you begin to see that it is a bustling community, filled with information on practically any topic you could ever think to search for.
YouTube is such a great concept in the sense that anyone can post content without restrictions (other than copyright of course). And it's really inspiring to see people's channels devolop over their time on the website.

One Youtuber that I have been subscribed to for a while is Alex Day (Nerimon) who is an unsigned musician and song writer. I've watched him build his channel with original songs, witty video blogs and a hilarious read through of a certain vampire themed book. He has even entered the UK charts twice now with the help of his subscribers, which is an amazing achievement.

A more recent find is Louise from 'sprinkleofglitter' . Louise's main theme on her channel is beauty, but there is so much more to this channel than make up. Louise has a knack of seeing everything in a positive light and you could never be in a bad mood after one of her videos. We are given a snippet into her family life, friendships and her reviews on make up products are really honest and hilarious at the same time. You can tell a lot of effort goes into the content that is produced and that she really enjoys what she does. In my opinion there should be a lot more people like Louise in the world. Louise and fellow beauty blogger Zoe now have their own online shop which you can check out here.

These are just a few success stories that have come out of YouTube. In a world where the internet recieves a lot of bad press it is nice to see this great tool being used in positive ways. If you have never had a browse through what YouTube has to offer, I could not recommend it more.

Louise Dearman proves pink goes good with green!

Everyone - myself included - seems to be buzzing about the new Wicked cast change announcement. If you're not familiar with the musical Wicked then get yourself out from under that rock and check out the website here -www.wickedthemusical.co.uk

Louise Dearman - a previous firm G(a)linda favourite - is returning to the land of Oz as my favourite musical theatre character, Elphaba. Louise jumps into the Wicked book of records as the only actress ever to play both lead parts.

When I first heard the news I couldn't make up my mind about it. I loved Louise's interpretation of G(a)linda, but the character is polar opposite to that of Elphaba, so I wasn't really sure how it would fit.

However after a short YouTube sesh looking through a lot of Louise's clips, you can tell straight away she is a chameleon and - sorry to go all Mary Poppins on you - 'practically perfect in every way'. That power house of a voice can belt out 'Defying Gravity' with ease and her stage presence is simply brilliant.

I will definitely be taking a trip down the yellow brick road to witness Miss Dearman smash yet another role.

Glasgow at a Glance - Riverside Museum

Having just completed one of my New Year resolutions - let's gloss over the fact that it's 8 months into the year - I am now in the process of moving in to my very first apartment. That being said, my trips to London will be few and far between while I deal with being an adult and having to pay bills.

I have set myself a mini goal to try and get to know my city better. For some reason I've always had issues with Glasgow - not for any justifiable reason - we have just never bonded and I want to change that.

This new section of my blog will be known as 'Glasgow at a Glance' and will focus on everything this city has to offer.

First up - The Riverside Museum

There's an old saying 'you don't get something for nothing', but in this case you do. The Riverside Museum is an interactive and informative attraction, and the best part... it's free!

For me, the Riverside ticks all the boxes. The open plan space allows the visitor to freely explore the exhibits and be drawn in by interest, rather then having to follow a set route. The variety of themes represented throughout the museum are so diverse, there really is something for everyone.

From taking a walk down cobbled streets...

...to hearing how a visit to the cinema used to be, first hand from people who actually experienced it...

...to a walkthrough of how transport has evolved throughout the years

You could literally spend hours here. There's also a coffee shop with a licensed bar where you can take in the lovely view of the River Clyde .

This has definitely been a great place for me to start and if all the other attractions in Glasgow are as good as this one then I can't wait to jump in.

Katy Perry- PART OF ME MOVIE

This time last week I was a normal Katy Perry fan, who enjoyed her music and liked her a normal amount. After going to see a showing of Katy's new movie 'Part of Me' I have Perry fever.

I'm not really sure what I was expecting from the movie. I thought it would be a fun way to experience her sold out concert that I wasn't lucky enough to get tickets for. I thought it would be interesting to get a glimpse into the life of one of the biggest acts of the moment. I did not for a minute think I would have been laughing, then crying, then relating to the events that were going on in someone's life that I had never met.

'Part of Me' guides us through the highs and lows of Katy Perry's life from the last year. From huge success in her career, to falling in love and importantly, how the music industry can sometime take its toll on people.

Throughout the full movie Katy is honest, endearing and dedicated - not only to her job, but to her fans. Her entourage is filled with people she has known for years and the chemistry they have really shines throughout the film ( in particular, a certain fart sound box scene ).

I think the thing people tend to forget with celebrities - myself included - is that they're just normal people. 'Part of Me' really shows that we all have heartbreak and bad days, but it's how you deal with them that counts.

I would encourage anyone who has ever had a dream to watch this movie. It's such an inspiring tale of how if you have enough passion for something ( and in this case bucket loads of talent ) you will succeed.

On Saturday I took part in something amazing.

Five Minute Theatre is a genius idea thought up by a team of people at the National Theatre of Scotland. The tag line - created by anyone for an audience of everyone - could not sum this event up more.

I witnessed 56 five minute shows, from a range of people, in a range of countries. Some pre recorded, some live in Glasgow, even live shows streamed from a shopping centre in Fife!! It really did feel like the possibilities were limitless.

Being in the NTS head quarters for the day, I got a first hand look as to just how much work goes into a project like this and the office was buzzing with nervous excitement, which was really awesome to be around. Myself and fellow Champion George were asked along to help out with the live chat that would be going on throughout the day. This in itself was a great experience for me, but I got a lot more than I bargained for.

The theme of this particular round of Five Minute Theatre was 'Youth'. I watched people of all ages and backgrounds interpret this theme and what was produced was a selection of relatable, hilarious and thought-provoking pieces from an online community coming together.

Album Review - Scott Alan, Live

When I heard Scott Alan was releasing a new album, I knew instantly it was going to be genius. And that's exactly what 'Live' is, 25 tracks of complete brilliance.

The CD was recorded live from Scott's most recent Birdland concert, and features performances from a host of West End actors and recording artists. As well as the winner of the 'I'm a star' contest Alexander Sage Oyen.

Each and every track from the album is filled with so much emotion and gives the audience a chance to connect with Alan as we get a glimpse into his inner thoughts and feelings.

His style of writing is simply beautiful and the lyrics easily lend themselves to others lives. This is definitely the must have album for all fans of theatre. That being said this roller coaster journey of what life can throw at you should be experienced by everyone.

My favourite track on the album is Never Neverland sung by - my favourite West End Lady - Kerry Ellis. I also love Blessing featuring RJ Helton and I'm a star featuring Natalie Weiss. Basically all the tracks are amazing and could not recommend more that you purchase this album. You can buy the album from Dress Circle here and it is also available for download.

Social Media Call - Macbeth

I was very fortunate enough to attend the social media call for the National Theatre of Scotland's most recent show Macbeth.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with social media calls, it's basically a chance for bloggers and tweeters etc to come along and preview some scenes from the show. There are photo and video opportunities and some time for cast interviews.

I arrived at the theatre just on time - and no more - after a minor train incident (why does Glasgow have a Pollockshaws East and a Pollockshields East- that's not at all confusing) and met with Eve from the NTS and the other people there for the call. We got to chat for a bit which was great, I always love meeting people with the same passions as me and listening to the projects they're involved with.

First on the agenda was a run through of two scenes from the show, we were encouraged to film, take pictures and update our twitters the entire way through. For this part of the day we were joined by the big bad press. This was a little intimidating, comparing their massive cameras to my tiny iphone, but after the first scene I was over that and ended up ducking and diving through tripods to get my shots.

After the scene run-through we were given the opportunity to speak with some of the creative minds behind Macbeth, including the set designer and the star of the show himself Alan Cumming. Everyone we spoke with provided an in-depth insight into how the production came to be with so much pride and enthusiasm.

I am lucky enough to be seeing the show tomorrow with the other NTS Champions, so a full review with my thoughts on the show along with some interview footage and snaps will be up in the next few days.

I think social media calls are a fabulous idea and if you can, I would try and get involved with the next one. It's a unique experience that leaves you feeling totally inspired.
