Boy was this Ge refrigerator unpleasant to work on. There was a lot of trash and ice all over the place. As you can see the evaporator is unusually iced up which required us to replace a faulty component. We finished the job and our Boise customer is very happy!

Suds in Dishwasher

As a seasoned appliance repair engineer in Boise I see many different problems with appliances. Some are difficult to identify because there many things need to be looked at – aside from potential faulty components. In this appliance repair service call an intermittent water leak was the problem. When I say intermittent I mean about 3 months ion between occurrences.

In the first visit the dishwasher was cycled numerous times and inspected fully. No leaks were evident – not one drop. The second “leaking dishwasher” call was three months later at the same house. After inspecting for water leaks and cycling the dishwasher repeatedly no leaks were found. We then looked inside dishwasher and saw detergent SUDS. These suds were still evident inside dishwasher after numerous test cycles without adding dishwasher detergent.

Detergent suds are cause by one thing and one thing only – the addition of the wrong type of soap, liquid or handsoap, into the tub. This can be caused by cross contamination such as soaking pots and pans in the sink with liquid soap and then putting them into the dishwasher.

Suds cause water leaks by seeping out the door and through the float switch orifice.

Refrigerator Defrost Thermostat

Hello, my name is Rich and I am the owner-operator of Western Appliance Services. We do our repair work mainly in Boise, Meridian, and Eagle Idaho however, we do repair visits in Star and Kuna.

This picture shows what a defrost thermostat looks like. It’s the part with the two wires coming from it, one pink and the other orange. This part is what is installed on all refrigerators and its purpose is to prevent the evaporator heating element from getting stuck in the ON state. If that happens, it could be a fire hazard. As with many things sometimes they fail. The result of that failure is in the background.

The frost that has accumulated on the refrigerators evaporator is the direct result of the defrost thermostat going bad. Most refrigerators are set to go into a defrost mode every eight hours to prevent the buildup we see here. When the defrost thermostat is bad it does not allow electrical current to the heater element. When there is no automatic defrost then the frost will choke off air flow to the fresh food section of the refrigerator. This is something we see every couple of month. Things that can Damage to your Washer’s Drain Pump

This damaged drain pump is the result of an Allen wrench getting stuck in the pumps impeller. You wouldn’t think a wrench would wind up in a washer would you? Ha ha, Yes, it’s one of many items I find when disassembling appliances due to malfunctioning parts. I find .22 bullets, keys, necklaces, bracelets, etc -the list goes on. I don’t think there will every be an invention to keep these items from getting inside a washing-machine’s internal workings but there IS one thing that DOES work – check clothes pockets for items before loading them in your two-thousand dollar washer :-).
This washer drain pump has seen better days. The white part of the pump is called the impeller and as you can see it has one of the three blades broken and a chunk taken out of it’s base. The best Maytag Washer ever built!!

This is a picture of a Maytag front-load washing machine built in the 1990's. It's one of the first front load washer designs that came to market and is one of the most dependable and desired washers in Boise Idaho and throughout United States.
There are many many of the washer owners who prefer to keep these washers alive and to squeeze every inch of life that's left out of them, and for good cause. The sheet metal is thick, the chassis is robust, the electronics are dependable and the main bearing last for years and years. There are not many things that go wrong with these but occasionally the will need to be repaired.
A repair is not cheap but compared to the cost of a newer washer, that may need to be repaired after 3-4 years, if your lucky, fixing these washers is very practical.
I, personally, have owned this same model of washer for 20 years and it needed one repair in that 20 year span. Try to get that dependability in a washer now? It won't happen. Most of the new appliances, if your lucky, will last about 7 years. Well, I think we all now the quality of appliances built and imported into the United States - Quality is lacking. Dryer Blowing Thermal Fuse

I worked on a dryer today in Boise. The dryer had a bad thermal fuse and the heat that was generated from the heater element was not being circulated in the drum and ducting sufficiently enough to prevent the dryer from overheating. Here was the culprit. This lint buildup in the ducting was restricting the air flow about 70 percent -enough to cause overheating.
Dryers should be cleaned out periodically. If this is not practical then a good indication of a problem is when you clothes are taking a longer time to dry. The pictures that I'm showing here is of a used dryer that was sold locally here in Boise. The company that sold the dryer had removed all of the safety thermostat wiring to prevent the thermostats from "blowing" due to an overheat condition and thus avert a irate call back to the shop for them to "fix the dryer you sold us.

Folks, these safety thermostats are there for a reason and they are VERY important. If your house vent is restricted it will cause the dryer to overheat. These thermostats are meant to blow and thus prevent a overheat condition and avert a potential fire. They will also prevent a over-current condition which is shown in one of the photos. When wires burn like this the electricity should be shut down by the very components that this company had bypassed.

This Boise company has been warned to quit what they are doing. I have seen at least five of these dryers and I inform my customers that the dryer is junk and I will not take the responsibility of fixing a unsafe dryer. We do not want to have a house burn down and have anything be attributed to our company, Western Appliance. Please be aware folks!

Refrigerator Safety Thermostat

This little booger is called a bi-metal or thermostat. It consists of two different metals fused together with different expansion characteristics when cold. This causes the metal to bend to create a switch contact.

These are installed on most refrigerator evaporators to make sure the refrigerator does not overheat during the defrost cycle.

Whirlpool dishwasher not cleaning good

This is what happens when kids load the dishwasher. :-). When your not looking, sometimes kids will get away with what they can and not rinse dishes like they are suppose to. In this instance we see a straw, toothpick, and other assorted articles. These items stick out like a sore thumb so we know there was no rinsing involved. Ha.

Fire in owyhees

Here is a view of the "soda" fire here in Idaho. It is still burning and it is almost contained. I am sorry for all the ranchers who lost so many of their cattle. These cattle were burned alive -terrible. Thousands of acres were burned. The land will recover.

GE refrigerator defrost operation

This is a good video on how the defrost heater works on a GE Refrigerator. You can see by the pic how intense the heat is. This heat is what defrosts the ice buildup on the evaporator coils. Regular defrost operation lasts approximately 20 minutes and occurs every 8-10 hours. If you hear a "sizzling" sound coming from the inside of your freezer, this is what you are hearing. Dishwasher "clean" light blinking

Dryer with no airflow
