I bought a 500GB mybook about a year ago. I have 3 mybooks 2 500GB and 1TB). So far, one of the 500GB drives has developed a fault and I cannot access anymore. I have also 4 Buffalo 1TB drives which are FAR FAR superior in data transfer and reliablity. I bought one of these drives and was very dissapointed when it lost power during data transfer the second time it was used. Initially it accepted over 300Gb of data transfer with no problems and quite quickly to boot. Once it died it could not be restarted so I have no way of knowing whether the drive itself failed or just the power supply that it came with.I was not impressed with the quality to say the least! Great product at a great price. No problem using it. I got rid of all the free trial software which got in the way. I use it as an external drive not only for my computer but for my XBox 360 and it's perfect BUT for XBox you must us FAT32 filing system not NTFS. Well it's done the job for me. No faults so far, although I see some people start hitting issues after a month or so. Will keep you posted.

Would be 5 stars, but using it with a Mac requires a formatting procedure to be followed - not difficult, but still not perfect. My Western Digital Passport spare drive hasn't let me down in the last 2 years, so optimistic for this one. An excellent product that sits quietly on the corner of my desk. Just plug in and go, although I admit I did reformat it to NTFS and got rid of all pre-installed stuff on it.

The only time I remember its there is by the two glowing blue lights on the front. Otherwise its just an addtional driver letter in Windows Explorer where I dump stuff... lots of stuff! It also switches on/off with computer.

I've backed up all my code projects, images, documents and even a complete backup of my computer on there and it still has plenty of space left on it.

So far this external drive does exactly what it says on the tin. It has a small foot print and read/write times are perfectly adequate for home use. It's also looks good.

I have bought two of these to date and would certainly consider this item again if storage becomes an issue. I use one as a network drive at home and the other to archive data. It does what it does perfectly well, without much noise or heat. It operates speedily with nice blue light on the front for those who like pretty bits of hardware.
One thing I believe to be missing is an on/off switch. Although this is certainly not essential as it has a standby mode after a period of inactivity.
This drive has a lot of BYTE for your buck, which i think is important. And with Western Digital you can certainly trust the name. This external HDD is a great product, and works well. It's not as small as some of the 1TB drives available, but in my case that doesn't matter, as super-portability wasn't one of my criteria. Works well with Windows and Mac OS X (in fact, I've partitioned it so I can use two thirds of it for Time Machine backups and the rest for media storage).

After having purchased many external HD drive of varying sizes in the past, the 1TB Western Digital 'My Book' has proven to be the most reliable, quiet and sleek units I have purchased so far.

The drive comes formatted as FAT32, so before you do anything else, I would recommend reformatting the drive as NTFS if you are intending to store large images, video or your music collection on it. With the drive being 1TB, you'll need to leave quite a while for the reformat to take place (mine was still going through the process 2 hours after kicking it off). If you are intending to connect it directly to your xbox360, you'll need to leave it formatted as FAT32 as the xbox can't read NTFS file systems (apparently).

The casing looks pretty cool and doesn't give off anywhere near as much heat as my other external HD's I've purchased in the past. There is no fan fitted so the drive is quiet while it's sitting dormant.

The drive powers up and down with your PC,so you can leave it connected all the time. There is no power switch on the unit itself.

If you are not accessing or writing files to the drive, the unit will go dormant to save on power. It normally takes a few seconds for the drive to spin up. This can be quite frustrating at times, but certainly no different from experiences with other external HD's.

After nearly filling my Seagate 320Gb external hard drive with my Time Machine backups, I decided that I needed a larger hard drive. After reading mixed reviews of this product, I was a little unsure whether to take the plunge, but went ahead.

After copying all my data from one drive to this one, I hid this unit behind the desk. It is very quiet in operation and fast too. The great thing about it now is that my Mac keeps backing up data every day and there is no hassle. When I power down my computer, the drive also turns off. When i switch the computer back on, the drive comes on. All silently and all in the background, exactly as a backup drive should be. I have backups going back to February 2008 as well as 24 films backed up and I still have 440Gb free.

As JacJack says, if you have a MAc, format the drive first in a better file system. This will not only be faster but more reliable.
