Now let’s talk…

See, a little change isn’t so hard, is it? Yes? No? Well, I have a few more questions for you to consider as I’m feeling my way around over here, so let’s start a dialogue on something very near and dear to my heart…

Are you crushing on any trend in particular for spring (one that you can see yourself working into your wardrobe to switch things up a little), or do you firmly believe western fashion shouldn’t change with the rest of the fashion world? Are you resisting change because it’s scary or, like western music, are you ready for it to venture out beyond it’s traditional borders? I’m dying to know…and be brutally honest. No point pussy footing around when you want to stomp and holler…just remember to be kind to each other while you do it

I would love to hear what Spring mani you all are rockin’…

First up is the day look. For me, San Fran involves a TON of walking so your Toms are a smart footwear choice…PLUS floral mixed with philanthropy in San Fran will always be on trend! You’re look will be oozing that hip city-weekend vibe, and I’ve tossed a little country tossed in on the side because girls like us can never leave that at home!

A peplum style top, topped with a denim vest will give you “coverage” in all the right places, while still accentuating a waistline. A big mistake women make is trying to hide under clothes that are too big, thinking they are covering up a problem area. Instead, that method actually accentuates it! Make sure you always have a waist (and I don’t care what size you are this is a must!). I always add a fitted jacket/vest to a flowy top, or make sure I have a long necklace over a tunic to flatten it out a little. And carrying your own shopping tote is always cool in SFO too!

Second up is how to transform those aqua jeans into a fab dinner outfit! The general rules are: kitten heels (you’ll still be walking a lot at night), a blousy top with a great necklace to flatten it out in front (and of course one must wear a “piece of peace” whenever you’re in the city of peace and love), and a fitted jacket over top. I love mixing navy with aqua instead of black! I think it’s a little more sophisticated and then you can sneak some dark denim into the outfit and it’s still evening chic! I’d keep the jewels in the cool metalic tones…silver or pewter so the whole look is pulled together.

Now one last tip for the trip. My fave thrift store in the city is at California and Polk. I’d shop here before I went anywhere else! {Keep your eyes peeled for a dress for the rehearsal dinner?} It’s Out of the Closet and they have some of the BEST 60s 70s vintage pieces I’ve seen. Only bummer is that if it’s in the window, they won’t sell it until they take it out. I’ve been heartbroken more than once by that policy, but the other pieces I’ve found have always more than outweighed that! And did I mention Swan Oyster Depot is right across the street. Barbara is a fabulous seamstress, so naturally she has chosen to make her dress using this BEE-YEW-TEE-FUL 70′s-ish vintage pattern. She’s chosen the lower left variation with a more tailored A-line skirt on it. Again…I DIE! Now I want to go dust off my sewing machine! I think it’s a perfect choice for you Barbara!

She was thinking about making it in turquoise to set off her stunning auburn hair and naturally, being a girl after my own heart, she’s going to wear these gorgeous Old Gringos with her gown.

Since she’s asked about the pairing and her hair, here are my suggestions.

I LOVE the boots and I think that if you’re blessed with auburn hair, you should let it take center stage in the color department. Your boots will also be drawing a lot of attention due to their sheer FABULOUS FACTOR, so both of these combined would lead me toward a softer choice in dress color rather than the turquoise you were considering. Sorry, I love my turquoise as much as any girl, but I think it will be too much given the above.

I’m in love with the silvery blue in your boots, and I think that color against your auburn hair would be a better choice (in this situation). I’m also in love with the LACE trend this spring. So with all of that in mind, I think a soft silvery blue lace over a light weight silk/satin (tone on tone) for your dress would be phenomenal! Combined, the look will be wedding appropriate, on trend, and I think would also be in keeping with your personality if you are careful with your lace selection (not tablecloth-like lace, but how about something a little more modern and intricate?). Here are a couple of visuals to give you the idea (ignoring the sheer factor on these of course), and I personally LOVE the second one because the flowers scream YOU. Maybe you could make a few lace flowers and add them to the skirt section yourself??? Suzie-ShabbyCowgirl Creations to come?

What I also love about this is that after the wedding, you can simply shorten the skirt of the dress, add a denim jacket and some great silver jewels, and toss on those boots to give the whole thing a new life! I know you love repurposing as much as I do so I’m hoping you’ll find this option attractive.

As for the hair, you’ve described yourself as a free spirit, so I think these two options are perfectly done, yet not overly fussy. You could wear it one way to the rehearsal dinner, and the other to the wedding. I think I’d choose the half up-do for the wedding and the side pony for the dinner.

One thing that often bothers me about wedding hair is that the styles chosen are usually not something that most in the wedding party are comfortable with. And because of that, they just seem to walk and hold themselves different than they normally would. Going with a style that suits your personality as much as your face will allow YOU to shine through. I also love that both of these styles are within the capability levels of most everyone. This saves money for being out and about in New Orleans!

Here are her gorgeous new boots! I couldn’t find the exact match for the Polyvore sets, but I think I got pretty close.

So Carrie, here are three easy ways to wear these this spring and summer.

First up, I love white denim for spring and I’ve always been a bit of a boho girl so here’s how I’d insert your boots into my style picks. And YES, I would put the vest over the flowy top. I like doing that as it tones down the “over” flowy look and gives a woman’s body some shape back. It’s just a little trick I use to avoid looking like a big bolt of fabric!

Next up, I love a great fitting pair of dark wash boot-cut jeans. Your boots are gorgeous, but if you want to switch it up a little,  you just play off the caramel/brown tones by wearing them with a flared jean (if you’re tall and brave, I’d go really flared…dare to be different girl!).

And, since I know Carrie lives in Calgary, and that going to the office in full western fashion is acceptable there, I’ve added an office look.

Hate to tell you, but when it comes to fashion, I pony up EVERY time!

So, I took the piece that I was most enthralled with (the skirt) and tried to work it into MY style. To me, this is the secret of bringing the runway into your wardrobe. Don’t try to be a carbon copy…pick one piece and try to add it into YOUR repertoire.

The skirt I found isn’t nearly as intricate (or beautiful) as the one on the runway…but mine was only $19 and for a trendy item, I can live with that! Sometimes reality must prevail, right?

That said, I did possess the pieces to kinda try to copy the look a LITTLE…so here’s MY rendition…

I know, it’s not even Spring yet, but Fashion works that way…constantly keeping a few seasons ahead of what we’re wearing.

Since it’s not Fall yet, why would you care what’s happening on the runway in NYC?

Well, I take it as an opportunity to know what to look for on the sale racks NOW. There’s nothing better than snagging a deal or two that I can stash away until the next season arrives…especially those 80% off the last ticketed price kind that this time of year is famous for!

I also look at it as a way to interpret some of the trends into this current or coming seasons so that my look stays fresh and hopefully I don’t look the same as every other person sitting around in their pjs watching fashion week via live streaming walking down the street!

OK, so enough of that. Here’s what I consider

The BEST of Day 1: BCBG Max Azria !

Just like the moment Angelina showed a little leg on the red carpet, these leather leggings had me the moment I caught a glimpse of skin ! I’ve already scanned the net to see when I can have them…I love how they’re a legging, a stirrup, and give the illusion of a boot, but they’re not any of the above when taken together! I also adore them over the classic pointy-toed pumps, but I’d pop these on over my fave short boots too…just to take them to a sexy, skin-hugging OTK in an instant!

Note that these are paired with length and layers (and if today’s shows are any indication, that’s a theme that runs rampant for F2013). Don’t toss those maxis yet ladies. Add a little peek-a-boo slit on the side (or have your tailor do it) and you’ve got an instant revamp of a staple that just does not want to fade away!

All the patterned and to-die-for feathery fur that was walking down the runway also presents a great opportunity at the SALE RACK right now. Scan for faux versions for an even better price point! And forgive me…but tell me that those leggings in black aren’t HOT…sorry, they’re distracting me

How can you take the Looks from runway to real life?

I’ll use BCBG’s emphasis on long and sheer as an example! I’m not sure how this translates for Fall 2013 without freezing your patewtie off…but I love it none-the-less…plus, the sheer black maxi is something you can find on sale NOW!

I’d pull this look forward for this coming spring and summer, layered over a sweet lace skirt or shorts, like the ones Danielle was talking about on the lace trends post, along with these Ariats (still a fave of mine!). FYI, the detailing on these boots are also bang on-trend with all the laser-cut leather that BCBG Max Azria was showing, so you’ll be wearing them for some time to come!

So, the trick to adding Runway to your wardrobe?

Pick a piece and try to incorporate it into your personal style. Let’s face it, most of us are not 10′ tall Amazons who can pull off the whole look at once. Not to mention the runway does that for effect. It’s theatre that exaggerates the trends so that they stands out against all others. Most of us need to tone it down a little in order to work it into our everyday lives AND be comfortable while we do it!

We are very excited to inform you that Danielle Perkin’s fabulous Blog Western Glamour will soon become part of the UrbanCountryStyle Publishing family, and we couldn’t be more excited by this announcement!
