WHY IT RATES: If you’ve ever been to Las Vegas you know that being in the sportsbook on an NFL Sunday or the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament or the Kentucky Derby is pretty darn cool. Westgate knows that too, which is why it made these improvements to its Superbook. – Rich Thomaselli, TravelPulse Senior Editor

Themed destination resort developer Westgate Resorts has teamed with rp Visual Solutions and Christie to build what the companies say is “the world’s largest LED Video wall” inside the Westgate Superbook at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, according to an announcement from Christie.

Working with HB Communications, rpV and Christie created an enormous curved array measuring 20 feet tall and 220 feet wide and comprising 1,640 2.5-millimeter Christie Velvet LED tiles and boasting more than 65 million pixels.

The video wall spans the length of the world’s largest sports book in an effort to create a stadium-like experience in which every seat in the newly renovated Westgate Superbook is a “front-row” experience.

Along with the construction of the screen, the Westgate Superbook includes more than 300 relaxation lounger chairs and a 100-foot-long curved bar that conforms to the shape of the screen.

“This is a game-changer for our property and a game-changer for the industry,” Westgate COO Mark Waltrip said in an article on Covers.com. “We’re going to set a very high bar for what a sportsbook should look and feel like.”
Amenities include:

* 4,488 square foot HD video screens – measuring in at 240 feet wide and 20 feet tall, it is the world’s largest indoor LED video wall and the highest resolution screens in Las Vegas for the ultimate viewing experience.

* 19 wagering windows

* Newly-constructed private booths available for parties and corporate get-togethers.

* All-new, fully-stocked bar to go along with cocktail service and convenient food options at the SuperBook® Deli.

* Interactive Player Terminals wagering – Players have the convenience of betting from their own seats, as well as access to track pools and even video replays of past races.

* Expanded betting menu, including “Over/Under Season Wins,” “Games of the Year,” “To Win a Golf Major,” “Props,” extensive first and second half wagering and more. “In-progress” wagering on marquee games and wagering on soccer leagues from around the world are also available.

* Players who relish the races can enjoy them on 32” LED touch screens, with power outlets and USB ports available at each individual seat. Qualified race players can also enjoy the upgraded VIP section.

* The Ultimate Fan Cave, where sports fans can enjoy their favorite events in a custom-built room that would fulfill any sports fans’ fantasy. The Ultimate Fan Cave is a smoke-free environment offering three giant 120” HD screens with the capability of showing 12 HD events simultaneously.

“To say it’s large is a giant understatement,” said Randy Pagnan, owner and principal at rpV. “When we were approached by HB Communications to fabricate this mounting structure for this project, we began the process of how to architecturally integrate this large, curved video wall structure into a reality. After designing came the task of how to install and deploy this configuration on-site. Partnering with HB and Christie to design this project is a huge honor. We knew that we had to exceed their expectations as well as Westgate’s to make this one-of-a kind fan experience a huge success.”

Siegel helped cut ribbon at new and expanded SuperBook

David Siegel is the perfect example of the difference between 80 years old and 80 years young.

The owner and CEO of Westgate Resorts helped cut the ribbon last week at the “official” opening of the new and expanded SuperBook, hailed by some as “the ninth wonder of the world.”

Well, Steve Wonder fans might challenge. So might followers of Wonder Woman, the makers of Wonder Bread and, of course, Robin, the Boy Wonder. But that’s for social media to debate. We as bettors are excited to see a race and sportsbook now worthy of the name Super with the very best in big screen hi-def TV’s, VIP seating and expanded floor space.

“I am not done yet,” Siegel told me after the press conference when all the commotion died down. “I want a first class place, top and bottom. I am spending a lot of money, but we will get it back. Gaming revenue is up.”

The next major project is a major overhaul of the deli, which has been in need of one for years.

“Every time we open a wall we get a surprise,” Siegel said. “The property is 45 years old. We could find bodies and dead horses.”

He was just kidding. Folks are so sensitive these days. Anyway, the plan is for a whole new food concept emphasizing higher quality and quicker service.

“We should be finished by the summer, we move fast,” Siegel said. “People don’t want to wait in line. Our board of directors makes instant decisions. That’s because the board is me.”

That’s not being arrogant, merely stressing he is hands-on as far as anything going on at the resort long famed for having Elvis living on the penthouse floor in the days when this venue off Paradise Road was known as the International.

“We upgraded our casino, adding the international bar and a new convention area,” Siegel said. “We brought in our award winning Edge steakhouse from Utah. All this was done without having to lay off any of our employees.”

That was a promise Siegel made when he took over the property that was known as LVH and prior to that Las Vegas Hilton. Morale was at an all-time low and many workers confided in me they were very concerned about where the resort was headed.

And with good reason. Westgate is in the same area as the Riviera, Sahara, Stardust and the never completed Fontainebleau. All dust in the wind or soon will be. Now morale at Westgate has never been higher.

“This is the largest and friendliest of the 28 properties Westgate operates around the country,” Siegel said. “We’re lucky to have Jay Kornegay running our book. I am really proud of what we have accomplished here.”
One more major hurdle Siegel wants to address is the lack of a big-time headliner to fill his showroom.

“We had Manilow and Liberace (through the years) and getting the right combo of entertainment here is still being worked on,” Siegel said. “We haven’t hit the jackpot (Suzanne Somers was a miss), though able to bring in Sexxy, the Prince tribute and Dirk Arthur. We want people in the casino and I am working every day to see that this happens.”

Encore: The Atlantis book in Reno recently released its over/under season win totals for major league baseball. And the list is quite conservative. The Giants top the chart at 90. The Braves are at the bottom at 65. I believe 95 wins is certainly possible for a number of teams. We’ll get into that later. It’s just nice to see baseball back just a few weeks before the exhibition season begins.

Review from Forbes Travel Guide

Edge Steakhouse in Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino wasn’t around to have played a role in the town’s Rat Pack heyday, but you would never know it from the fine service and throw-back atmosphere.

The Spot

While the flashy center and south Strip, with their miniature approximations of France, Italy and New York, do solid work as billboards for those destinations, it’s the north end of the Strip and downtown that do the heavy lifting for the notion of Old Las Vegas. Although the Sahara has yielded to the SLS, and the Hilton has been supplanted by Westgate, resist the urge to pass them up for newer notions. You might be overlooking fresh new concepts on hallowed grounds.

The Approach

Edge Steakhouse opened in July 2015 in the former Burger Bistro footprint. At 3,270 square feet and located across the way from Benihana, the Vegas steakhouse seats nearly 200, and features an intimate bar, an octagonal main dining room, a secondary dining room and two private rooms. Housed within one of the private dining rooms is a portion of Edge’s extensive wine library — more than 450 selections, including Premier Grand Cru Château Margaux, Latour, Haut-Brion and Napa Valley favorites, such as Screaming Eagle, but also by-the-glass darlings such as the Prisoner Wine Company. The full menu of modern steakhouse fare, as well as an abbreviated menu, are available in the bar and lounge area, which is warmly lit by red and clear crystal chandeliers.

The Bar

In the wood-paneled bar and lounge there is a communal table for eight, two bistro-height tables and six seats at the bar. Go all in on a bottle or pair by-the-glass wines with each course. If cocktails are the object, inquire what’s aging in the diminutive barrel. Behind the bottles, a large silver-framed flat-screen TV is tuned to the main event of the moment, and behind that sits a tiled mosaic that breaks up the dark wood. Elsewhere Klimt, Renoir, Van Gogh and other masters’ prints dot the walls — who says there’s no culture in Las Vegas?

The Food

It’s easy to imagine Edge’s main dining room as a place to power-dine. Here, all eyes are on the centermost table, which is flanked by decorative columns. The Vegas restaurant’s guests run the gamut from CEOs and sports executives to conventioneers and moon-eyed couples. As this is a steakhouse, beef — specifically Snake River Farms American and Miyazaki Japanese wagyu, and Niman Ranch prime — is the obvious choice. But first come the house-baked popovers: hollow, chewy skins that instantly melt a ramekin of whipped butter. Like a certain famed doughnut, you’ll want to catch them fresh from the oven. A zingy Caesar salad can be prepared tableside for parties of two or more, and the Edge Salad, with butter lettuce, avocado and grilled asparagus, comes topped in a flurry of housemade fingerling potato chips.

While steak is the focus here, it’s not the only option. Even the humble roasted chicken — Mary’s Chicken, for those who know, in dark demi glace — is served in Le Creuset bakeware with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus and mushrooms in pan jus. Whether you choose the spotlight or the shadows, service is a mixture of formal and friendly, but never strays into casual. Management is present, but never obsequious.

The Deal

Edge comes to Las Vegas by way of tony Park City, Utah, where it’s an Old Town staple (and a Forbes Travel Guide Recommended winner). It’s already hitting its stride in Vegas. The Edge staff confirms that during big conventions held at this partial timeshare hotel with 300 timeshare villas and 1,200 remodeled Signature Rooms, when the steakhouse’s doors open at 5 p.m., the place can fill up by 5:05 p.m. So make reservations or arrive early if you prefer not to live on the edge.

From Las Vegas Weekly review by Brock Radke, January 20, 2016

The iconic casino-hotel property that most people still identify as the Las Vegas Hilton was certainly in need of a makeover when timeshare mogul David Siegel bought it in 2014 and began transforming it into Westgate Las Vegas.

No dimension of its offerings needed to be refreshed as badly as its food, and those necessary changes have been made. Sure, its highest-profile restaurant, the unbelievably still-alive Benihana, remains, but Westgate has perked up its dining stable with Fresco Italiano, Rikki Tiki Sushi, Silk Road Asian Bistro, and the charmingly classic casino coffee shop Sid’s Cafe. But the undeniable champion of this culinary overhaul is Edge Steakhouse, a transplant from the Westgate Park City Resort in Utah.

When it was the Hilton, and then LVH, this building was forever trapped in the ’80s and ’90s. Frankly, as Westgate, it still is. But when you’re eating at Edge, you’ll realize that’s not a bad thing. That’s because while the decor still brings that vibe—white tablecloths, wood floors, cheesy pillars and chandeliers in the middle of the dining room—the menu, directed by chef de cuisine Steve Young, is updated and ideal, and the service, dictated by general manager Shaun Morales, simply sparkles.

Edge steaks are towering hunks of charred prime beef served on stark white plates with maitre’d hotel butter and a clove of garlic. Upgrade from the filet with the Manhattan sirloin ($57), flavorful and rich, or splurge on the Gold Label eye of ribeye ($78), marbled and juicy. Edge also serves the coveted Japanese A5 Wagyu for beef nerds and a 32-ounce bone-in porterhouse ($125 including two sides) for those interested in a shareable slab.

Other dishes are steakhouse standards with subtle, refreshing twists. The Silk Road shrimp appetizer ($18) does the Nobu spicy-creamy thing, while the prawn cocktail ($30) comes with chunky tomato cocktail sauce and Meyer lemon foam. Porcini mushroom soup ($14) with black truffle and goat cheese is a lovely winter indulgence, and Edge handles tableside preparation deftly with a classic Caesar salad for two or more ($16).

The current seafood highlight is Alaskan black cod done cioppino-style ($35) with clams and mussels in a broth rich with fennel. Of course, you can always add a Maine lobster tail, shrimp scampi or king crab Oscar-style to your steak. The side dishes ($12) don’t disappoint, ranging from black truffle mac and cheese with Irish cheddar, Gruyère and veal demi-glace to Brussels sprouts with sweet potato and Thai chili. If you’ve ever considered making a tapas-style meal out of steakhouse sides, this is a good place to test the theory, possibly incorporating lobster risotto or roasted mushrooms with Sherry vinegar and Boursin cheese.

Westgate will never be compared to the Strip’s elite resorts, and it doesn’t want to be. It’s a Vegas spot for our millions of Average Joe visitors, and Edge is the steakhouse equivalent. It’s a fine-dining experience with comparable prices where you get what you pay for—terrific food and total satisfaction.
