Fact: Posting quality content is a great way to improve your search engine rankings. Quality content helps you to develop the high reputation that puts your web pages at the top of search results. The success of your site depends on many factors and posting to your blog on a regular basis is one of them. It not only keeps you connected to your clients, but helps to improve your search engine rankings.

Here’s a quick tip:

Capture the reader’s attention with a clever title. Be certain that any content you write for your blog will be of interest to your target audience. It is important to stand out from the crowd. If you are writing about topics that have been covered extensively, or less than interesting, don’t expect your blog to get many visitors.

Capture search traffic and increase your search engine rankings with blog posts and how-to articles. Posting keyword-optimized blog posts is key! Each blog article should target a well-chosen keyword phrase. Choose keywords that people are actually searching for. They are not always what you think they are! Keyword research is critical in this case. It is important to choose keywords with a high search volume and not too many competing pages, to yield potential website traffic.

Keyword placement is critical for real results

After you choose 12-15 keyword phrases, narrow down your top 3-5. Place your main keyword in the title of your post. The title is the heading that people will see in web search results. Next, use your main keyword phrase and few others in a descriptive headline describing the content of your post (about 10-12 words).

For Example:

The main keyword phrase for this example is “best Christmas gift”. The title of the post should be constructed around that. For example “How to Choose The Best Christmas Gift for your Wife” or “How to Find The Best Christmas Gift”.

The next step is to optimize your post description for maximum search traffic results. Your post description plays an important role in have people to click your link and go to your post. Use this area to write a compelling summary of your post.

Lastly, write an article body using your secondary keywords to optimize your post. Distribute your main keyword phrases approximately once or twice every 100 words. Make sure that your article sounds natural and not like the keywords were randomly placed.

That’s it! Post often to attract new visitors and to keep connected with your clients.

For example: “Are you thinking of the best Christmas gift ideas for your husband or wife? Discover great ideas for the perfect gift at a great price.”

Guaranteed SEO could be completely real and totally legitimate when it’s interpreted as pay-for-performance SEO. Think about it – you don’t have to pay for any unsuccessful SEO campaigns. Wouldn’t that be cool? Before you get too excited, read on. This article will unveil you the 3 layers of guarantee of SEO services and you will learn how to get them without falling into traps.

Is Guaranteed SEO possible?

Let’s demystify the guarantees, identify the catches, avoid scammers and more.

Perhaps it’s not your first time reading about Guaranteed SEO or similar phrases, which have been flying around for quite a while. This buzzword creates almost as much confusion as it does curiosity. Over-used yet seldom-delivered, many business owners become jaded, especially those who have been burned a few times. So before Guaranteed SEO becomes truly cliché, let’s examine what in the world the guarantees actually are and on what they are founded. You may be surprised how many layers of guarantees are out there, and what you can expect from each.

Guarantee…Yeah, I’ve heard this before, why can’t someone put their money where their mouth is and get me on the top of google, i would gladly pay for that!

Let’s start with common skeptical questions.

1) “I’d love to be ranked in the first page of Google. But … can they really do it?”

Interpretation: “Few people know exactly how Google ranks websites. Only the large companies can afford to rank at the top. How can they possibly guarantee the first page result for my website? Is it a scam? Or are they just trying to lure me in and then charge me a fortune?”

Answer: Demand a pay-for-performance guarantee – or don’t sign. This is the essential layer of guarantee.

First of all, Google’s goal remains delivering the most relevant search results to ordinary users. Although Google’s algorithm is not open to public, its ranking formula is. All legitimate SEO firms who follow the ranking formula actually help Google reinforce the formula and thus achieve its goal.

However, SEO used to be a pay-and-pray service, with no guarantee whatsoever. The market was sheer chaos. Anyone dropping a little jargon could claim expertise, charging customers premium prices for basic services. Guaranteed SEO solves this problem, providing customers true protection.

When people hear promises like “1st page of Google … or it’s free”, their skepticism is founded on a misunderstanding. It simply means the company does NOT charge for unsuccessful SEO campaigns – what pay-for-performance all about. If an SEO firm suggests that they can place ANY website in the first page of Google, you can bet they are scammers.

The devil is in the details, you definitely want to find out what is covered by guarantees. For instance, how many keywords, often in percentage terms, are guaranteed to place the target website in the 1st page of Google? Typically you see the guarantee ranges from 40% to as high as 90%. Of course, the higher percentage the better (and often pricier).

More importantly, you should find out the quality of the keywords. Many SEO firms would suggest that you avoid the high competition keywords and find the ones overlooked by your competitors. This is, for lack of better word, worthless. Who CANNOT deliver a guarantee on weak keywords? Such suggestions only highlights the weakness of the SEO firm. To maximize your return on investment and capture the best converting traffic, you should always select the keywords that are of high competition, high relevance (to your business), and high search volume. After all, these are the ones your customers/audience would search when they are in the buying mode.

Never be fooled by those who show you only their own website ranking in Google under some “SEO” strings. This only shows the capability of the firm in one category. In the SEO business, results talk. Ranking customers’ (NOT the SEO firm’s) websites on the 1st page of Google is the only result that matters. In fact, some top SEO firms never rank their own websites because they don’t want their competitors to track through and discover what resources have been leveraged to deliver the incredible results.

2) “How long can I stay in the first page of Google?”

Interpretation: “Yeah, I know you might be able to push my website to the first page of Google initially, but I want to stay there indefinitely. I don’t want to pay forever for a one-day first page result.”

Answer: Obtain an ongoing guarantee. This is the second layer of guarantee, also the most valuable guarantee in the SEO business.

Let’s face it – everybody in the same industry or categories fight for those precious 10 spots on Google’s first page. You can safely bet that, in competitive markets, all the websites in the first page of Google are backed by some SEO experts. In other words, staying in the first page is an ongoing campaign to outperform those poor souls on the 2nd and 3rd page. Only the most confident, competent SEO firms provide an ongoing guarantee, especially on competitive categories and competitive keywords. Such firms are rare.

3) “Are they legitimate?”

Interpretation: “Do these guys use dirty tricks or spam Google? I don’t want my website to be blacklisted by Google – my reputation and business would be ruined.”

Answer: To deal with this issue, demand a legitimacy guarantee. This is the third and final layer of guarantee.

Technically, since Google is not the government, we should not use the word “legal” or “illegal” here. Nevertheless, Google zealously enforces its rules on SEO and, in fact, has a dedicated anti-spamming department to uncover and penalize those who violate them.

In the SEO industry, the terms white and black hat are used referring to legitimate and illegitimate measures. According to Wikipedia, white hat measures include backlinks development in credible websites and blogs, while black hat measures mainly count keyword stuffing, cloaked webpages and link farms.

Almost every year, Google does a major cleanup to remove the rankings of thousands of websites resulting from black hat SEO. The most recent one happened in February 2011, affecting an incredible 14% of Google indexed websites. Even such giants as JC Penny and BMW were caught and penalized by Google (see http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/business/13search.html).

There are a few ways you can easily identify if an SEO firm uses white or black hat measures to improve its customers’ organic ranking:

a) Make sure the firm has been established for more than two years. Most black hat companies are fly-by-night operations, establishing new business names to cover their illegitimate past.

b) Find out how long the firm’s customers have been ranked on the first page of Google. If the customers’ rankings were upped via black hat measures, the ranking typically won’t last six months.

c) Ask the firm if they provide any sort of ongoing guarantee. This is the Achilles’ heel of all black hat firms. Sooner or later, the rankings pushed up by black hat measures will be removed by Google for good. (Note: Many legitimate SEO firms with a proven record of business do NOT offer an ongoing guarantee, either. It only means they are NOT in the pay-for-performance business model yet.)

Remember:

1. Pay-for-performance guarantee is necessary but insufficient. To achieve the best business results (leads and sales), the guarantee has to be on the keywords that are of high competition, high relevance (to your business), and high search volume.

2. Ongoing pay-for-performance guarantee is the most valuable guarantee. You might have to pay more, but it’s worthwhile. Otherwise, a 6 or 12 month contract might cost you dearly for ranking in the first page only in the first month or two.

3. A legitimacy guarantee is fundamental to everything else. White hat SEO is relatively slow. For low to moderate competition categories, 1 to 2 months are needed to rank most of the keywords to the first page. For high competition categories, 3 months at least might be required. Better safe than sorry – you don’t want to hire a black hat guy who promises you instant results (2 to 3 weeks or so) only to find your well-designed site blacklisted by Google three months later, do you?

Now, with all three guarantees in place, can a successful SEO campaign guarantee you business success? Not necessarily. Google is powerful, yet it is not your ATM.

Imagine all the right keywords have ranked your website in the first page of Google, ask yourself “Now what?” Have your business fundamentals in place. Be prepared before your glorious moment comes.
Twitter Me This

I started blogging a few years ago and only recently started writing a weekly column for a local newspaper. It goes without saying that I must engage my readers to keep my gig. Although, and almost more important, are receiving page hits and consistent hits, week after week after week.

Did you know there is only one thing that differentiates a blogger and a columnist?

Since becoming a columnist it was imperative that I created a new Twitter account to attract a more versatile audience, different than those following my blog. Consequently, the world of # (hashtags), RTs (retweets), DM (direct messages) FF (friend follow) and many other symbols were foreign and intimidating.

Prior to creating my new Twitter account I simply followed people that A) I found interesting and B) their Twitter name informed me of our shared interest in the single most important detail of my blog. My tweets were specifically targeted towards those tweeters but I rarely retweeted because I didn’t understand the benefit. All things considered, I was pretty satisfied with the growth and quality of my twitter community. However, it wasn’t growing fast enough.

Gaining Twitter followers isn’t complicated but first you must understand the six basic Twitter tools and then you should utilize the tools to build and maintain a flourishing community that is well informed and engaged. Engaging your community will bring more followers aka Tweeeples.

# (hashtags) – created by using the # symbol in front of a word. As Twitter explains, a hashtags “is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages”

RT (retweet) – is used when a user shares another tweeters post verbatim simultaneously crediting the original tweeter. A retweet appears as RT @[username] followed by the tweet.

DM (direct message) – a message up to 140 character’s that only the user it was sent to can see.

#FF (follow Friday) – a hashtag used by tweeters to help their fellow tweeples to gain more followers.

Shorthand – abbreviated words and symbols created to communicate in 140 characters or less. For example @westongraphics we r So-Cal’s #1 web-design co. since ’89

Tiny Url – is a web service that provides short aliases for redirection of long link. For example http://www.westongraphicsinternet.com/social-media/making-the-most-of-social-media = http://tiny.cc/ti36b

Should you make the most of the above-mentioned tools you will see an increase within your Twitter community. Although we cannot guarantee you will generate a large amount of tweeters we can guarantee that the more you put into your Tweets, the more you will get out of Twitter, altogether.

The distinction of developing consistent social media habits vs not taking advantage of free marketing = less profit. The fundamental distinction between a blogger and a columnist…a blogger blogs while a columnist earns money – creating revenue for their employer.

We cannot emphasize the importance of social media enough – that coupled with a fantastic web presence designed by WGi!

Social Media is not just one entity it is multi layered and interconnected. Each social network stands on its own as a social networking tool, linking them will maximize their ability to reach a larger audience making it much more effective.

Like it or hate it you cannot ignore the impact that social media networks can have on your business, without utilizing one another they aren’t as effective. Since social media is still relatively new, there are few industry-standard ways to monitor or measure any of it. Though they say it takes a village to raise a family we say it takes awareness to market your brand and with little know-how, you can use social media as your #1 marketing tool to deliver a new level of leads, recommendations and gain sales.

Driving business using social media can be a complex and diligent process, but it doesn’t have to be as there are companies out there that specialize in helping large organizations to create consistent branding and imaging across social mediums. Yet, even if you’re a small business the key is relative and enables you to compete in the larger markets – to have something for your audience once they get there is the key. You aren’t going to close a deal in 140 characters and people aren’t going to find enough information on your Facebook page to decide to purchase from you or the larger companies. So, if you utilize your web site and blog as hubs to feed information about your products, you can notify people and draw them in to interesting features through your social media channels, i.e., Tumblr and RSS feeds.

Monitoring and responding to conversations about your brand can be an important part of your marketing strategy as well. Once a brand is established, it’s not difficult to run searches in a number of mediums. Google searches and monitoring will find folks talking about you on LinkedIn or Facebook. And Twitter has a very elaborate search, using hashtags (the way they categorize things for example, #westongraphicsinternet) and usernames. Creating a channel for real customer service, publicly responding to both positive and negative feedback shows your clients that you really do care. Social Media isn’t any different from the “real world” in that respect. Yet, there’s always the “take the high road” approach, too.

Social Media now reaches the majority of Americans 12+, with 52% having a profile on one or more social networks. This figure is driven largely by Facebook, which is now used by over 51% of Americans 12+.

Twitter is as familiar to Americans as Facebook (with 92% and 93% familiarity, respectively); however, Twitter usage stands at 85 of Americans 12+. Approximately 46% of Americans 12+ now checks their social media site and services several times a day.

These statistics do not lie – a social presence gives your online brand the credibility to attract clients by engaging your audience, making yourself available and demonstrating experience. Yet, be that as it may, we cannot stress enough that you must use the social media tools continually and consistently to ensure staying power with your customers and to perpetuate new business.

* Statistics taken from The Social Habit is a new study conducted by Edison Research and Arbitron, and is derived from the 19th Edison/Arbitron Internet and Multimedia Research Series, one of the longest-running studies of consumer adoption of the Internet, new media and other technologies in existence

Color matters! For you personally and for your website visitors. In fact, it matters more than you think!

Growing up I was real trouble maker, just like any normal kid I suppose. Inevitably, I was summoned by my father to get the “Marine Corp” belt. The belt was out in the garage, you know, the unfinished, exposed wood part of the garage before we used to make a garage a bedroom for our cars. Hanging on a rusty bent nail, pounded into a 2×4, was the Marine Corp Belt. The buckle was worn out brass, very utilitarian in design and the actual belt was well warn leather. This belt was in World War II on my father’s waist, and now it was about to be on my butt…and I had to go get it! As it turns out, my father never hit me with it, he would fold it in half and snap it only as he could do. The shrill from that snap would send the dog running one direction and me the other!

What does this have to do with color?

Quite simple, I’ve never been a big fan of brass colors and warn-out leather colors! Get it now? Color moves us. You can show me a painting of the highest price and beauty; if it is brassy and leathery in color I will say…naaaaaaaaaa, not so much! Color really does matter and we take it quite seriously when we build a website. We often show first comps in black and white, so that the client can see the overall composition and layout without having the color get in the way. Color is poignant, it really does moves us!

So, how do you arrive at a color scheme for your website? Which colors work together and which do not? There are a few interesting ways to develop a color palette for your site. One involves using a nice photograph, as is the case to the right, Mother Nature.

Take this picture on the right for example. I took this recent on a trip to Morro Bay California. The color is fabulous. This moves me and a get some amazing comments from others that see it. What if we wanted to use this color theme for a website? How would we develop a palette from this picture? Would it be acceptable for a therapists website, a dentists website, a photographers website, a financial website?

There is a psychology to color and you should be aware of this psychology when developing your site. Here are a few comments with regards to some popular colors.*

Black

Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black.

White

Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility.

Red

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.

The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Blue

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Green

Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in “green rooms” to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.

Yellow

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

Purple

The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.

Brown

Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. And my dads Marine Corp Belt! Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.

Red may not be the most appropriate color scheme for a trauma psychologist for obvious reasons, toned down cool and calming colors would be. The point here is important, think of your audience too! Think of what emotions will be touched when they see your site and the colors presented.

Back to our picture of Morro Bay.

Let’s take this picture and extract the color to build our site color palette. In this example, I be the owner of a photo studio and we feel that this picture represents out office color theme and would be a wonderful base for our site. The first step is to pull out meaningful colors from the image. You can see that we have circled a few areas that we would like to use the color. With these colors extracted we can build a color strip that we will use for various elements of the website. Background, text titles, sidebar background, header, footer color…all together will make a beautiful theme.

Take a look at the color chip that is developed from the image. Now we can use these colors for the various elements and build a site color palette that emulates the image that we started with. This can be used for all aspects of our business. Corporate identity, office design, marketing collateral, etc. This is marketing 101 and out of the scope of this article, but know that a uniform look and feel across all visual communication is so important.

What is I don’t have a nice picture but I know what colors move me?

Recently one of our clients wanted to create a site with a custom color theme that suited her desires and would be appropriate for a Therapist site. I talked to her about her color preferences and what colors she felt would move her patients. We settled on “beiges, blues, and greens in water color style”. Below you will see the color strip we created and an actual page from the clients website.

As you can see we used all aspects of the color theme on the final site. Other pages included more color integration, the final outcome was a design that delighted the client.

Parting words

Color does matter! Color is equal in importance to other site elements such as design layout, navigation logic, and of course good content. The sum of these parts makes a whole website. Consider each element with great care, your audience and your bottom line will thank you for it!
