“Growing Up Weston” the new documentary depicting three generations of Westons, will premiere at the 60th Birthday Celebration of Kim Weston, grandson of Edward, son of Cole and nephew of Brett Weston — the first family of photography OF California whose landmark work has been recognized internationally.

Award-winning Writer/Director Isaac Artenstein captures Kim Weston at Wildcat Hill, near Point Lobos, where Kim’s grandfather Edward lived and created some of the most iconic work in 20th Century photography. Kim lives there now with his wife Gina and son Zachary, photographing, teaching and heading the Weston Scholarship, which supported the production of this documentary.

In “Growing Up Weston” we visit the lovingly preserved family home, and step into Edward’s darkroom, where Kim shows how his grandfather used only a contact printer, a light bulb and a kitchen timer to create his highly sought after masterpieces. Kim also demonstrates his own printing techniques in his own darkroom in Wildcat, where he also holds photography workshops, lectures and special presentations year-round.

“Growing Up Weston” is a celebration of a family of artists, their work, and an invitation to audiences to experience life with passion and purpose.

As of 2012, The Weston Scholarship has awarded 157 scholarships totaling $57,950 dollars!

We are thrilled with the continued success of the scholarship and the ability to continually offer more scholarships each year to local photography students in The Monterey County.

The 2013 competition is right around the corner and we can’t wait to add to the growing number of scholarships already provided through the scholarship.

Important Information.
Make sure not to leave any information out!

1. Ten mounted/matted prints in a portfolio box/case
2. Completed application signed by your photography instructor
3. Proof of school registration for the school year of 2012/2013
4. Artist’s statement – A one page typed written statement about the submitted work. The statement can include information about the photographs, the importance of the medium to the student, and any future plans that may include studying or practicing photography.

Weston Scholarship Judging at Monterey Peninsula College

IMPORTANT DATES

Friday April 26, 2013

The deadline for submission of the portfolio and support materials is Friday April 26. The work must be delivered to the MPC photography lab IC105 from 3 – 4 PM by the above deadline in order to be considered for the competition.

April 27-28, 2013

Judging will occur the weekend of April 27-28, and the winners will be notified that weekend as well.
We will be contacting you by phone and by email so please check your email during this time.

May 1 – May 31, 2013

There will be a public exhibition of the winners at the Marjorie Evans Gallery, which is located at The Sunset Center in Carmel.

Wednesday May 8, 2013 – Award Ceremony 6-7pm

The award ceremony and opening will be held at the Marjorie Evans Gallery on Wednesday May 8. Winners must pick up their portfolios at the reception.
Check in to get your name tag so we know that you have arrived.

Thursday May 2, 2013 4-6pm

Non-winner’s must pick up their portfolios on Thursday May 2 between the hours of 4-6pm (or arrange to have someone pick it up for you). A Weston Scholarship representative will be available for portfolio reviews to help suggest how to set new goals for next year’s contest.

JUDGING

The portfolios will be judged by a panel of respected local artists and educators. Judging is based on uniqueness, clarity, consistency of vision, and the quality of a finished print. (printing, mounting and spotting)

Weston Scholarship gave away 24 Photography Scholarships this year. The awards totaling $10,200 were given on May 8, 2012 at The Weston Scholarship Awards Ceremony & Exhibition at the Marjorie Evans Gallery, 9th and San Carlos at The Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel CA. The show is up until May 31, 2012. We hope you get a chance to see the show in person.

This year’s photographs, the 2012 Scholarship Portfolio Winners and photographs from the 2012 Weston Scholarship Awards Ceremony and Exhibition are up on the site. Congratulations to all of the Scholarship Awardees. This years contest was amazing with 102 Photography Portfolios entered. The work was amazing and very difficult to judge. It was a very close contest. Thank you to all that participated this year!

Roman Loranc a fine art landscape photographer from the MT Shasta CA area helped judge this years contest and WS gave a $2000 award in his name. He was very inspired with the number of portfolios that were submitted and the quality of the photographs. WS will continue working with Roman Loranc on other fundraising projects.

The 2012 Weston Scholarship Portfolio Contest has begun! Over 100 portfolios were submitted to the Monterey Peninsula College darkroom today!! Tomorrow we will be judging. A loyal supporter of The Weston Scholarship, Roman Loranc will be in town to help judge our contest this year. Its so exciting!
