Photography teacher, Cole Thompson from Stevenson High in Pebble Beach CA brought his class over for their yearly visit.
Kim showed the house and darkroom, talked a bit about his family history. We then went into the gallery and viewed Black and White Photography made traditionally in the darkroom. Kim showed his painted photographs and his grandfather Edward Weston’s work. We also talked about this years 2012 Scholarship!

Kevin Bransfield from Monterey Peninsula College brought his photography class over for a visit. Among the photography students were 3 prior Weston Scholarship winners! Kim showed Edward Weston’s darkroom, the house, his own darkroom and studio. He showed prints and made a digital negative. Thanks Kevin for bringing your group out! Great group!

Society for Photographic Education

Thanks to artist and photography instructor Claire Lerner, Society for Photographic Education attended a Weston Scholarship fundraiser at Wildcat Hill home of Gina and Kim Weston. Here we toured the home and darkroom of Edward Weston, viewed black and white fine art photographs, learned about Edward Weston and viewed “Remembering Edward Weston”. Its a fun video because there is footage of our living room when Edward lived here. It’s pretty special feeling when you see it. Knowing you are in the same house where he worked and lived for so many years. It was fun to meet so many teachers. We had so much in common. Thanks for coming SPE!

Monterey Museum of Art Docents

On October 12, 2011, Deborah Stern scheduled a Weston Scholarship fundraising tour for the docents from the Monterey Museum of Art. They wanted to learn more about the Weston Legacy and Edward Weston. We gave them a tour of the house, darkroom, showed prints and then we watched “Remembering Edward Weston”. It was a nice afternoon and we met a lot of new faces. The previous show at the Museum was “Edward Weston: American Photographer” This exhibition was organized from major museum and private collections and will feature vintage prints of Weston’s most famous and admired photographs along with rare images not widely exhibited. Hope you got to see it!

“Thank you so much for your wonderful tour yesterday. All of us had a wonderful time and appreciated all the time you took to explain the home, Edward’s life and his photographic experiences. It really helped fill in information about Edward and the family that we had not known in the past. We also enjoyed seeing the work that Kim is doing now. In all, it was an inspirational day that none of us will ever forget.

Fall Classes at Monterey Peninsula College

Fall Classes have started at the Monterey Peninsula College. After fighting to save the photography program we want to be sure that every class fills up. There is still room left in Greg Mettler’s “Black & White” “Film & Darkrooom” class on Saturday’s from 9am-4pm.
Class starts next Saturday August 27th.

2012 Weston Scholarship News

I will be updating the site with next years scholarship dates soon. It will be the same time frame. Portfolios will be due at the end of April 2012 and the awards ceremony and exhibition will be at the Marjorie Evans Gallery during the month of May.
Here is a photo of Reed Farrington, Kim Weston and our son Zach. They hung the 2011 Scholarship show. Actually Reed Farrington is on our board and has helped judge the show since 2005, He has also helped hang and take down the show for the past 4 years at the Marjorie Evans Gallery. Its been great to have him on “board” Thanks Reed!

2011 Stevenson High School Visit

Every year Cole Thompson brings his class here to Wildcat Hill. I can say this is one of the reasons that Kim and I started the Weston Scholarship. Here are some photos from his last visit.

2011 Weston Scholarship Fundraisers

Last month Gin, the photo blog diva arranged 3 fundraisers for the Weston Scholarship. Kim gave the “Growing Up Weston” lecture 3 times in 2 weeks! We set up a projector and showed the power point slide show in his studio. Then the groups came up and Kim showed Edward Weston, Brett Weston and his own photographs.

In the past month Kim has given his talk to over 100 attendees! The first presentation was at CSUMB, then the Independent Photographers Group, the ImageMakers, Carmel’s Padre Trails Camera Club, here at the house at our “A Day with Kim Weston Workshop” and then we got invited to show it at Stevenson High’s Symposium Art Day. So maybe that is more than 100 people that now know a little more about the lives of the Weston family.
Kim said he is retiring that talk. Looking forward to the new lecture and slide show!

Stevenson High Visits Edward Weston’s Home

Cole Thompson brought his Stevenson High Photography Class to Wildcat Hill last week.This is the beginning of our “season” for visitors. We love to have the students come, to learn a little bit of photographic history – especially one that is right in their own backyard.

They get to see some amazing photographs, ones that you might only have a chance to see in an upscale gallery or museum. We get to hear what projects they are working on. We love the energy and enthusiasm these kids bring with them. And it gives them a chance to see some of the prior Weston Scholarship winning photographs, we hope some of them will enter their portfolios this year.
