Kona Ice truck has hit the streets to cool off Broward County! You can’t miss them when they roll into your neighborhood or event! A new Everglades restoration deal disclosed Monday proposes to clean up water pollution and resolve decades of federal legal fights, with a more than $1.5 billion public price tag. The plan that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on Monday forwarded to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency seeks to correct Florida’s failure to meet water-quality standards in stormwater that flows to the Everglades.

Building new water storage and treatment areas along with other improvements over more than a decade could cost about $880 million, according to the South Florida Water Management District, which leads Everglades restoration for the state.

Broward County Water Preserve Plan

Broward County has proposed a water preserve with the aim of boosting local drinking water supplies, and helping restore the Everglades. The backers of this project hope Congress will agree to this long-planned project later this year. A total of $900 million dollars is required to complete this project, of which $250 million of has already been invested.  The preserve would take up an area that borders Weston, Pembroke Pines, Southwest Ranches, and Miramar

The project requires building two above-ground structures that will cover more than 3,600 acres of installed pumps and water control systems. It calls for the creation of man-made wetlands- that total 800 acres. The preserve will collect storm water, process it and use it to replenish the Everglades.

The water preserve is a long overdue restoration project that was originally part of federal and state plan presented in 2000.  Since then, Congress has approved only one water development act. With the lack of shared funding, the Broward water reserve plan has been waiting for the required contribution to start construction.

 Using storm water, and Everglade water that seeps under the levees in Broward, would help restore the aquifers that provide the County with most of its drinking water. The preserve could also reduce the amount of water taken from Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, now being used to supplement the regional water supply. The proposed plan for the new water preserves could successfully increase drinking water, and create a stronger connection between the Everglades, Weston, and other Western Broward communities.

One year after Fiat stores opened in South Florida, sales of the small sporty car are taking off.

South Florida ranks as a leading U.S. market for the brand, with a Rick Case store in Weston claiming No. 1 in sales nationwide in at least one month, Fiat executives confirmed.

That’s partly because South Florida buyers like imports more than many U.S. regions, dealers agree.
