Iiiiiiiiiiit’s finals time!!! Yes, the junior rep regular season is finished for 2015, and we have a black and white casualty unfortunately. Our SG Ball team came up with three wins this season, which wasn’t enough to see them through to the finals. However, our Harold Matts boys are storming ahead, finishing in fourth position. This weekend, at Pepper Stadium (Or Penrith Park, for those of us who remember a time when it was Lang Park, Shark Park and the SFS), your Allied Express Magpies will face Parramatta in the first qualifying final at 1pm. The winner goes straight through to the Grand Final Qualifier, and gets a week off, while the loser backs up in a sudden death match next week.

With our senior Magpies having a week off courtesy of the split round, only one Magpie team will fly this weekend, so get out to Penrith on Saturday to see the boys have a sushi lunch of diced eel!

Match Reports Round Eight Junior Reps, Round Four Sydney Shield and RMC

South Sydney were red hot at a soggy Campbelltown last Saturday, thumping Wests 46-4 in the Harold Matthews.

Handling errors aplenty marred the opening of the game, but Wests held on long enough to send the ball wide off a dropout, Nathan Patolo touching down in the left corner for a 4-0 lead after eight minutes.

Souths hit back at the halfway mark of the first stanza, some lateral attack moving the Magpie defence around before Daniel Fifita went through the meat of the pack to reach out alongside the posts for a 6-4 lead courtesy of the kick from Mawene Hiroti.

Wests were dominating proceedings, but the third try went to the visitors, a lucky ricochet off a Gus Garzaniti kick allowing Mawene Hiroti to capitalise after Souths went 100 metres in two plays, the Bunnies ahead 12-4 ten minutes out from halftime.

Souths registered their third just before the interval, Malla Chan-Foon going over after Souths spread the ball in good field position after a poor Magpies turnover. Hiroti nailed the touchline kick, the Rabbitohs going to halftime with an 18-4 break.

The second half could not have started worse for Wests, putting down the kick-off and giving Souths a scrum, from which Mawene Hiroti crashed over on the left flank before converting to make the score 24-4.

Momentum had swung violently after the break to Souths, and they quickly scored again, Campbell Graham put away off an inside ball from Josh Cook, Hiroti unable to add to the 28-4 lead.

Wests could not keep a handle on the ball, Souths pouncing by going wide and, although Wests came up with the cover tackle, Dean Hawkins strolled through off the ensuing play to extend the lead to 34-4 with 18 minutes still to play.

Wests defence was struggling under the mountain of dropped ball, and Josh Cook took full toll, going through the ruck almost untouched to score. Hiroti added the extras and the visitors broke 40 with ten minutes remaining.

Wests could not take a trick, a right spread going to ground, Jonny Mitsias on hand to scoop up the scraps and race 80 metres to touch down for Souths’ eighth try , the Rabbits running out 46-4 winners.

A dominant first half was enough to get Souths home 30-20 against a spirited Western Suburbs last weekend at Campbelltown in the SG Ball competition.

Souths were in first after a physical opening four minutes, Dylan O’Connor strolling through a hole opened up by a neat decoy play. Siosifas Talakai split the uprights perfectly, and Souths were away 6-0.

Souths quickly doubled their lead, Emre Guler spinning through some soft defence after an offload from Siosifas Talakai, who converted the try for a 12-0 lead.

It was all red and green, handling errors cruelling the Magpie attack and defence, as Gabe Hamlin crashed over after two neat offloads for an 18-0 lead.

Wests needed to score next to stay in the contest, and they did just that, Elijah Mannah in adjacent to the uprights and, courtesy of Hosea Leuea’s conversion, the score was back to 18-6.

South Sydney hit back to undercut the black and white momentum, Dylan O’Connor sneaking out of one tackle before carrying three Magpies over the line in an incredible show of strength. The kick, from almost bang on the touchline, was dead straight from Siosifas Talakai, Souths taking their 24-6 lead to the break.

Wests came out firing after the break and struck first, a kick through from Toa Mata’afa allowing Jye Brooker to dribble ahead and score for the Magpies to reduce the deficit to 24-10, Hosea Leuea slicing the kick.

Wests were holding their own against the aggressive Souths pack, and took advantage after a knock on, Hosea Leuea scoring out wide after a nice shimmy and go, although he couldn’t convert his own try, Souths ahead by ten with as many minutes remaining.

Wests made it a grandstand finish with four minutes remaining, Hosea Leuea breaking through before kicking wide and putting on a sixpence for Jye Brooker to mark and claim his second of the day, Leuea’s coversion making it 24-20 Souths.

However, the Bunnies would not be denied, Henry Fuimaono crashing over with Wests attempting the steal. Talakai threw it over from in front, Souths prevailing 30-20.

Western Suburbs and Asquith played out a 26-26 draw last weekend in the Sydney Shield at Campbelltown, a result that left Asquith ruing a poor day of goalkicking, while Wests were frustrated at letting in two late tries.

A tough and grinding opening ensured first points took a while to come, Nathan Hourigan pouncing to intercept an Asquith pass and race 40 metres to open Wests’ account for the afternoon, Tyson Tie Tie adding the extra for a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.

Asquith hit straight back, Ben Mooney sliding a grubber in behind the line for Meli Katia to fly through and touch down despite the close attention of Wests fullback Falcon Peni, Brad Horder unable to draw scores level.

Asquith continued to explore with the football and found paydirt 12 minutes from the interval, Luke McDonald playing the role of trombone in the violin section as the front rower crashed over one in from the wing, Brad Horder again off line, leaving the score at 8-6, which Asquith carried to halftime in a drab, grinding game of football.

Asquith, aided by a couple of penalties on touchjudge advice, opened the second half scoring with a try to Meli Katia after Wests failed to shut down the overlap. Brad Horder was having an unhappy day with the boot, missing his third consecutive shot at goal.

Wests were quick to respond, Esan Masters shoving, propping and bouncing his way past five Asquith defenders to touch down. Tyson Tie Tie was having a much better day than Brad Horder, the scores locked at 12 after 54 minutes.

Wests doubled down, a bomb from the next set off the kick-off seeing Falcon Peni swoop to clean up the spill from Asquith and Wests suddenly found themselves in front 16-12.

Asquith went to water with Wests’ kicking game, even straight forward punts being put down, this one allowing Simona Ene to notch his first of 2015, Tyson Tie Tie’s kick sailing wide to leave Wests eight points clear.

Asquith needed to score to stay in touch and did so, Luke Hanson crossing out wide from a nice long ball courtesy of Ben Mooney. Brad Horder couldn’t buy one, his touchline attempot striking the upright on this occasion, Wests with a 20-16 lead entering the final 15 minutes.

With Asquith looking to push up and get the ball back to go on the attack, Tyson Tie Tie slipped a little grubber in behind the Asquith defence, Peter Ta’auso swooping to score, Tie Tie extending the lead to 26-16, but it was short lived as a short kick off saw Asquith get the ball back, Jackson Williams going over to bring the score back to 26-20, Asquith finding no luck with a new kicker in Sam Buttel.

Shae Jarvis ensured the crowd held their collective breath as he scored from dummy half just inside the siren. Sam Buttel converted from close range, the final score an underwhelming 26-26.

Asquith have defeated Western Suburbs 28-10 in a spiteful Ron Massey Cup match marred by five sin binnings and a woeful refereeing display that left both sides fuming.

Asquith opened the scoring after just five minutes, the greasy surface seeing Wests lose the ball, Jaco Marketo burrowing over from dummy half on the ensuing set. Jamie Ingram nailed the touchline conversion beautifully, Asquith ahead 6-0.

Asquith doubled up from the kickoff, some flimsy Wests defence seeing a break through the middle, Mick Pearsall backing up to go around under the posts and Asquith were ahead 12-0 after eight minutes.

Twice Western Suburbs had tries disallowed for being in front of the kicker, much to the chagrin of the local crowd, before Mick Pearsall notched his second try off a slick backline move and an 18-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Wests finally got on the board after half an hour, a loose ball finding its way to John Sila, who beat his opposite number before heading back inside and beating two more in going over. Shannon Gallant was unable to add the extras, Asquith maintaining their lead by 18-4 through to halftime.

Wests were first on the baord in the second half, Shannon Gallant slicing through to score adjacent to the posts before converting his own try to reduce Asquith’s lead to eight.

Referee Josh McGowan quickly lost control of the game, a brawl seeing two Wests players and one from Asquith dispatched, the ten metres quickly becoming five, Asquith taking advantage with Mick Pearsall grabbing his third for a 24-10 lead at the halfway point of the second stanza.

With the teams level at 11 each after Asquith lost another player to the bin, the visitors found space on the left, Jaco Marketo racing in for his second of the day after a penalty for a late challenge, Jamie Ingram’s kick unsuccessful, leaving the final score at 28-10.

We have a huge day at Campbelltown, with four games coming your way, including a black and white-out!! At 10:30am, your Harold Matthews boys will look to bounce back with a win over South Sydney. The Bunnies need to win to stay in the final hunt, while a black and white triumph will guarantee finals football for our Magpies!

That situation will be very much reversed in the SG Ball fixture, starting at midday. Wests are desperately looking for a win to stay alive, while Souths can all but lock up a semi final start with a win.

At 1:30pm, your Sydney Shield Magpies will look to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss last week, with either us or Asquith to register first points for 2015.

Rounding out the day at 3pm is the Ron Massey Cup. Asquith have three wins from as many starts in 2015, and THE REAL Magpies will look to end that streak on the back of captain courageous Shannon ‘Mighty Mouse’ Gallant.

The finals race is hotting up in the junior rep competitions, and our SG Ball team is hanging tough, looking to break back into the top eight this weekend, while our Harold Matthews boys are looking to consolidate a top four position. This week, they face the competition leaders (Yes, both grades) in the Balmain Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. The Matts will get underway at 11:30am with the SG Ball kicking off at 1pm. On Sunday, your Sydney Shield team will travel into Silvertail territory to face the Belrose Eagles at Lionel Watts Reserve, Belrose, kick off at 3pm. Your RMC boys have the bye, which will give a great opportunity for our goalkicking fullback extraordinaire, Shannon Gallant, to give some coaching to the next generation of Magpie talent, who seemed like they wanted in last weekend!

Our Harold Matthews boys backed up with another strong performance against Western Sydney Academy prevailing 40-12. The Magpies started slowly and

after just 2 minutes of play the Academy side got first points courtesy of a well-placed cross field kick. Down early on the scoreboard the Magpies Gus Garzaniti found

some pin point accuracy of his own with a neat grubber kick through for Billy Omerod who managed to get his fingertips to the ball centimetres from the dead ball line. The

kick was pushed wide and the Magpies trailed 6-4. The match turned into a bit of an arm wrestle as both sides payed respect to the wet conditions, that was until in form

Magpies halfback Ailand Pihema produced a brilliant left foot step to slice through the defence and find James Tautaiolefua screaming up on his outside to cross the line.

Full of running, the Magpies marched up field and forced a repeat set through another well placed kick from Gus Garzaniti. Only a few tackles on and Alex

Potifara was able to crash over the Academy try line with a well-timed run. Gus Garzaniti took over the kicking duties and extended the Magpies lead to 14-6. With not

long remaining in the first half, man of the moment Gus Garzaniti swooped on a Western Sydney drop ball to race 35 meters to the try line. Garzaniti converting his own

try pushed the Magpies out to a 20-6 lead. With only minutes left on the clock, the Magpies turned over possession and allowed the Western Sydney side to secure a late

try courtesy of another well placed kick. The half time score ending 20-12 in the Magpies favour. The Magpies only took five minutes to register points in the second half

with a slick inside ball from Ailand Pihema allowing big Denzel Tavui to crash over. Gus Garzaniti again providing the extras. With the Magpies leading 26-6, errors started

to creep into both sides. That was until a sweeping backline movement set the platform for Magpies winger Billy Omerod to show good speed and strength to beat his

opposite man and touch down in the corner for his second of the morning. Garzaniti pushed his attempt at goal wide leaving the Magpies with a healthy lead of 30-6 with

less than 10 minutes remaining. With the match now out of reach for the Western Sydney side, the Magpies demonstrated a relentless attitude and were rewarded with

two late tries to Hyrum William-Polotu and Zane Rifai. The final score, Magpies 40 Western Sydney Academy 12.

With plenty on the line for both sides in the SG Ball contest, it was the Western Sydney Academy side that dug deep to come out on top beating the Magpies

25-18 in ordinary conditions. In what was a scrappy start to the game the Magpies registered first points through a strong courtesy of Toa Mata’afa. Hosea Leuea

successful with his conversion attempt to put the Magpies ahead 6-0 after 5 minutes. Only a few minutes later the Magpies were able to go back to back after the Western

Sydney side were unable to cleanly get hold of a well placed grubber kick, Ray Stone on the spot to pick up the spilt lollies and plant the ball down under the posts. Leuea

made no mistake with the conversion pushing the magpies out to a 12-0 lead. A string of errors from the Magpies opened the door for their opposition and they took their

opportunity with both hands crashing over near the posts to claw back the margin to just 6 points half way through the first half. Unfortunately the errors continued from

the Magpies and some hard and direct running from the big Western Sydney pack allowed them to lock the scores up 6 minutes from the break. The Western Sydney side

applied plenty of pressure in the final 5 minutes and after finding no way through the Magpies defence they were happy to settle for a field goal to give them a slight edge

going into the break. Half time score Wests 12 Western Sydney 13.

The Western Sydney side started where they left off and only took 3 minutes to register their first points of the second half. Again some simple hard and direct

running proving to be too much to handle for some mediocre Magpies defence. The conversion attempt a simple one and the Academy side extending their lead to 7

points. The Magpies were able to keep themselves in the contest via a strong charge from Prop Taniela Paseka who grounded the ball next to the upright. Leuea making

no mistake with the conversion and making it a 1 point ball game. Unfortunately for the Magpies the trend continued with a number of unforced errors inviting their

opposition down field and with 15 minutes remaining the Western Sydney side were able to score the simplest of tries from dummy half. Faultless with their attempts at

goal all morning, the Academy side edged to a 25-18 lead. The final 10 minutes of play turned into a scrappy affair which saw Western Sydney produce some desperate

defence to stay on top at the final whistle. Final Score Wests 18 Western Sydney 25

Hills District made it two from two for both themselves and Wests in winning 48-24 last Saturday at Campbelltown.

Hills District took less tha two minutes to register first points, James Boustani slipping a short ball to Diamond Charlie, who had too much momentum for a desperate Mason Cerruto, for a 6-0 lead courtesy of James Boustani's conversion.

Hills struck again on ten minutes, James Boustani grubbering pack to the posts and catching Wests off guard, Daniel Mahoney touching down and extending the lead to 12-0.

Things were looking grim once again for Wests, Scott Hiogan crossing after being put through a hole a mile wide and, after James Boustani's conversion, Hills were out to 18-0 after 15 minutes.

Wests registered their first points after 21 minutes, a grubber in behind the Hills line grounded inches inside the dead ball by Mason Cerruto. Blake Lazarus nailed the kick from close range, reducing Hills' lead to 12.

Wests kept probing and found more success in behind Hills' line, Blake Lazarus beating a rush to touch down and, after converting his own try, Wests were back to within six points with eight until the interval.

Wests' momentum was quickly snuffed out, Scott Hogan bursting through a whole and going around Mason Cerruto to go 50 metres and put Hills back out by 22-12.

Wests had the last say in the first stanza, though, an offload finding Mason Cerruto, who created a hole from nothing to scoot 30 metres and score under the posts to put Wests within four points at halftime, Lazarus successful with the kick.

Hills were first to register points after halftime, Edric Holmes showing too much speed for his opponents in going around and over the line. WIth a successful conversion in front by James Boustani, Hills had their ten point lead back four minutes into the second half.

Wests were struggling under a mounting penalty count against them, and Scott Hogan took advantage of a tiring defence to claim his third by twisting his way over the line for a 32-18 lead.

Wests could do nothing about the next Hills try, from the following set, as a horror bounce left Mason Cerruto stranded, James Boustani backing up on the inside for a Scott Hogan offload. Boustani converted his own try and, with 26 minutes remaining, the Bulls were charging away at 38-18.

Wests were battling a tidal wave of possession but found a whole in some gap-riddled Hills defence, Ben Mitchell crossing to make the score 38-24 with ten minutes to play.

Wests were determined to force an error, but the aggression in defence led to a lack of focus, James Boustani chipping and regathering before putting Bevan De Vries away and Hills ahead 44-24.

Hills finished off the scoring, Ashley Johnson crossing out wide for a 48-24 win.

It wasn't a memorable one, but Wests coach Nathan Waters secured his first victory in the ROn Massey Cup with a 24-14 defeat of Concord-Burwood.

Wests registered first points after 11 minutes, Dwayne Lemafa bustling all the way to the line from 15 metres out. Shannon Gallant converted for a 6-0 lead.

Ajay Vaivaka struck back for Concord after 17 minutes, burrowing over from dummy half after a repeat set. Kane Gillies locked it up at six with the conversion.

Concord hit the lead on 28 minutes, Tori Tuiletufuga stepping inside the cover defence to slam the ball down theatrically for a 10-6 lead, Gillies' kick away to the right.

The second half began with fireworks, Tom Morrison and Jordan Abouhaidar both sent to the sin bin after Morrison unloaded with several right hands.

Once play had settled down, Concord began to apply consistent pressure, and this pressure came up with points as Alofi Mataele strolled over in the corner off a long floating ball from Alex Zarounas for a 14-6 lead, Gillies hooking the conversion attempt wide.

Wests found a way to break out of the grind with a booming 40-20 from Veiru Mapesone and, from the ensuing set, Sama Sauvao stormed over from a wonderful ball, slightly held up, from Wayde Dunley. Gallant was successful with the conversion, ensuring a grandstand finish at 14-12 with 14 minutes remaining.

Wests struck again quickly, taking the lead off a seemingly innocuous kick from David Harris. Fortunately for Wests, Sam Latu spilt the ball, Harris on hand to clean up for a try and, after Gallant's kick, an 18-14 lead.

Concord went probing for an equalizer, but instead Wests sealed the match as Concord sought to jam in, spreading it right for John Sila, who stood Sam Latu up magnificently before coming around under the posts for Gallant to convert and secure a 24-14 victory.

his weekend your junior Magpies will face the Western Sydney Academy in a match which could determine the possibility of a top four finish in the Harold Matts, and any finals footy at all for our SG Ball boys. Kick off for the Harold Matts is at 9:30am and the Ball will start at 11am, with both games being played at patrician Brothers College Blacktown, located at 100 Flushcombe Road.

Meanwhile, at Campbelltown, your senior Magpies will be looking to atone for a couple of rusty performances in round one. At 1:30pm, our Sydney Shield guys will face off against the Hills District Bulls and at 3pm, Concord-Burwood will shape up against our Ron Massey Cup team. There's time to get to both grounds Magpie fans, so let's hear you loud and proud this weekend!

Wests Tigers vs Dragons at Campbelltown

Wests Tigers will look to make it back-to-back wins to start the year when they take on the St. George-Illawarra Dragons on Monday night football.

Jason Taylor’s side irked out a tough 19-18 win over the Gold Coast Titans to kick start the year at Cbus Super Stadium, and will return to Campbelltown Sports Stadium for their first home game of 2015 desperate to open the year with two wins — a feat not achieved by the Club since the start of the 2008 season and only twice since 2000.

Their opponents will be the Benji Marshall led-Dragons — a team coming off a tough 12-4 loss to the Melbourne Storm last week and now without two of their key representative personnel in fullback Josh Dugan and forward Ben Creagh. Yet with Marshall, who returns to the ground where he made his debut for the first time since leaving Wests Tigers, and Gareth Widdop in the halves, Paul McGregor’s side are certainly still capable of causing some problems.

They may have taken their foot off the pedal in the second half, but Wests were still dominant in a 52-4 smashing of SWSAS in the Harold Matthews last weekend at Camden.

Wests had all the running early and crossed after three minutes, Hyrum William-Polutu going through some soft defence to register a 4-0 lead, James Tautailalefua missing the kick.

Wests were made it ten in ten minutes, Rua Ngati burrowing over from close range after a strong run from Hyrum William-Polutu, James Tautailalefua on target at the secone attempt.

The Magpies were quickly in again, A wide kick marked by Billy Omerod, who stepped inside a desperate defence to touch down for a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes, the kick sailing wide.

It was quickly becoming a training run for the black and whites, Rua Ngati going again from dummy half for his second, although he needed a great deal of strength to force his way through four defenders. James Tautailalefua nailed the kick, and Wests led 20-0 after 20 minutes.

Te Academy's defence was falling to pieces, and Denzel Tavui did it easy to stroll through for Wests and, with James Tauatilalefua on target, a 26-0 lead for the black and whites five minutes before the break.

Wests weren't done, though, and after an injury delay, the Academy opened up for Gus Garzaniti after a dummy half run, James Tautailalefua sending Wests to halftime ahead 32-0.

Wests took just four minutes to score first points of the second half, Ailand Davis-Pihema stepping inside the cover after a left swing and a 36-0 lead after James Tautailalefua swung the kick away.

The Academy finally found their way through, a kick from Etuale Toa rebounding fortuitously for Shondre Lee-Silva to score. Rodney Small hit the upright, the Academy unable to reduce the 36-4 margin with 18 minutes to play.

Wests were struggling for a penalty but not for tries, James Tautailalefua showing blistering speed to go 70 metres on a left shift before converting his own try for a 42-4 Magpie lead with 13 minutes to play.

Wests started to grind through the last ten minutes but still found a way to the line, Denzel Tavui pushing through some soft defence for a 46-4 advantage.

Wests signed off in style, Nathan Patolo slicing through the SWSAS defence to go 60 metres and breaking the half century in the process, Gus Garzaniti's kick seeing Wests run out 52-4 victors.

Wests prevailed 40-10 over the West Coast last weekend in an SG Ball clash that never reached any great heights.

Wests looked dangerous early, but opened the scoring off a lucky break, a grubber kick dropped seeing Harrison Coskerie getting through. Hosea Leuea was on target with the kick, Wests ahead 6-0 after just five minutes.

Wests immediately added to their advtantage, Netane Masima doing wonderfully to touch down off a grubber inside the dead ball line and a 12-0 lead courtesy of Hosea Leuea's conversion.

The Coast showed some promising signs down their right side and capitalised halfway through the first half, Siailoa Faafua slicing through the Magpies defence to touch, down halving the deficit with Ryan Crocker's outstanding sideline conversion.

Wests struck back by shutting down a promising raid, Joseph Faalavaau picking off the pass and going 80 metres to score for an 18-6 lead after Leuea's conversion.

Wests were focussing on the ruck for their dominance, PJ Leifi bustling 20 metres through tackle after tackle to score and extending the Magpies' advantage to 24-6 with Hosea Leuea adding the extras, the typing of your reporter getting under the skin of Magpies coach Josh White as much as he did in the 90s with opposition players!

The second half got off to a swimming start, Taniela Paseka touching down after two minutes from a Toa Mataafa break. With Hosea Leuea online, Wests jumped away to a 30-6 lead.

Wests started to play some average football, but found space down the right through Jye Brooker, who sent a bullet back inside for Toa Mataafa to score under the posts and, thanks to Hosea Leuea, extend the lead to 36-6 with 20 minutes remaining.

Wests were unable to hold the ball or maintain their discipline, allowing the Pirates to set up a right side raid with six minutes remaining, Juna Chase on the end of the sweep. Ryan Crocker was unable to convert, the Magpies ahead 36-10.

Wests weren't done though, aan overlap on the left flank seeing Joseph Faalavaau going over in the corner. Hosea Leuea was unsuccessful with the conversion, the Magpies prevailing 40-10.

Western Suburbs started the Sydney Shield season with a very disappointing performance in going 64-4 to a rampant Cabramatta at Kirkham Park.

Two Blues centre Luke Simpson had a field day, claiming a hat trick of tries and slotting four goals for a personal tally of 20 points.

Simpson started the carnage in the eighth minute, picking off a Magpie pass and racing 80 metres to touch down under the posts, converting his own try for an early 6-0 advantage.

Caine Henry notched one off the restart and Cabramatta quickly got out to a 10-0 lead before Wests' defence showed some Magpie muscle.

The muscle only lasted fourteen minutes, though, Winston Asotasi crossing out wide before Sam Tawamacala scored again from the restart, blowing the Two Blues out to a 22-0 advantage before Caine Henry added another to send Cabra to the sheds with a 26-0 lead.

Wests needed to be first to score after the break, but Cabra registered first points through Tifa Iuta five minutes into the second stanza for a 32-0 lead, Luke Simpson converting from adjacent to the uprights.

Simpson was on the scoresheet again after some slick passing through the middle for a 36-0 advantage with half an hour remaining.

Ricky Piggott found the line for Cabramatta after the Two Blues ran it on the last before Western Suburbs finally found their way over the line, George Azzi burrowing over from dummy half.

Piggott was in the action again for Cabramatta shoetly after Wests' only try, producing a delightful chip and regather which summed up just how much Cabramatta had the ball on a string throughout the match.

Cabra's last three tries were shared amongst Luke Simpson, who terrorised the Magpies' left hand defence, Jeremy Safi and Sam Tawamacala, the Two Blues finishing with twelve tries in a performance which will have other Sydney Shield teams quaking at facing the Two Blues, while Wests boss Daniel Beardshaw will have plenty of work to do with his charges.

Wests opened their account with a disappointing 44-22 loss against Cabramatta at Kirkham Oval in the Ron Massey Cup last Saturday.

Cabramatta opened the scoring on 12 minutes, Jack Nobel spinning through some strong tackles and showing immense power to touch down for a 6-0 lead with Grayson Goodwin converting the try.

Cabra repeated the dose from the restart after setting up off a long break, Mitchell Simpson powering over. Goodwin added the extras, Cabramatta ahead 12-0 after 17 minutes.

Both sides were fighting hard through the middle, but it was Wests who needed to score next and they did so, Dwayne Lemafa fighting his way over the line when he had no right to do so. Shannon Gallant split the uprights, and Wests halved the margin eight minutes before the interval.

With one try quickly came a second for Wests, Shannon Gallant bursting through off an inside ball from Wayde Dunley to go over without a Cabramatta defender in sight save for the fullback. Gallant converted his own try for good measure, locking the scores at 12.

Vieru Mapesone spilt the restart, though, and from the scrum, a left swing saw Cameron Eyles take advatnage of the overlap to scoot over in the corner. Goodwin failed to convert, Cabramatta going to the sheds ahead 16-12.

Cabramatta opened the scoring after the break, Adrian Haangana being sent straight up the middle of the ruck after the Magpie markers had split. The try, plus Goodwin's kick, took the Cabramatta lead to 22-12 after 54 minutes.

Wests were looking likely to respond just three minutes later, but a wayward kick found Grayson Goodwin, who shrugged off the tackle and went 90 metres to score, Shannon Gallant up in the chasing line. Goodwin was unsuccessful with the conversion.

Wests were falling away in defence, Saxon Gray breaking through the line before sending Jake Jackson on his way, Cabramatta breaking away to lead 32-12.

The floodgates were open, the Two Blues going through the middle from the restart, Josh Davis backing up to cross under the posts.

Wests were only going to find the Cabramatta line with a kick, and that's exactly what happened, Wayde Dunley hoisting a kick wide which was batted back twice, Phillip Brombal ending up with the scraps to go over for the home side. Shannon Gallant was unable to convert from out wide, Cabramatta maintaining a 38-16 advantage with seven minutes to play.

Wests came home with a wet sail, Sama Sauvao touching down from a neat Vieru Mapesone grubber kick and, with Shannon Gallant on song, the Magpies got back to 38-22.

Cabramatta finished off the scoring, though, Max Nappa scoring a soft try through some brittle Magpie defence. Corey Brown slotted the kick, Cabramatta going home with the win by 44-22.

He's had many nicknames over the years, but simply mention 'Tommy' to any league fan and they will instantly know who you are talking about. Raudonikis was a Magpie institution from 1969-79. Epitomising the 'Fibros' era of the club Tommy had plenty of skill, but it was his toughness and unmatched will to win that made him a hero at Lidcombe and feared by opponents. Virtually unchallenged for the Australian No. 7 jersey for a decade Raudonikis played 201 First Grade games for the Magpies and returned to coach the club in 1995-1999.

A 10-1 penalty count against them couldn't stop a black and white rout at TG Milner last Sunday, Wests running in six tries to down Norths 34-16 in the Harold Matthews with the score flattering the home side.

Not more than a minute had passed before Wests had the opening chance to score, however the final pass off a glorious right swing was ruled forward, Billy Omerod denied opening points.

In a seesawing contest which saw both sides given plenty of pointscoring chances, it was perhaps fitting that Wests opened the scoring with nothing on, Ailand Davis-Pihema stepping his way through brilliantly to touch down out wide. The kicking position didn't faze James Tautailalefua, though, with the touchjudges not moving as Wests went ahead 6-0 after 19 minutes.

Wests were in again just three minutes later, a scrum giving James Tautailalefua room to move and he absolutely flew by the Bears defence to race 75 metres for a 12-0 lead which Wests took to the break, despite a valiant final effort from Keeley Bowen.

The Bears started the second stanza full of running in attack, but their defence looked brittle, and never moreso than when Denzel Tavui forced his way through from five metres out to score off an inside ball from Maurice Faaae and, with James Tautailalefua successful with the kick, Wests lead 18-0 after seven minutes of the second half.

Norths finally registered their first points twelve minutes into the second, a succession of questionable penalties allowing Keeley Bowen to go over to reduce the margin to 18-4 after Jeremy Trunzo-Braga failed to convert.

Norths failed to complete from the kick off and Maurice Faaae was held up on the ensuing set. However, Gus Garzaniti rectified that from the play the ball, strolling through some almost non-existent Bears defence to bag the fourth of the morning for Wests and a 22-4 lead with the kick sailing wide.

Norths' defence was falling apart and, after several damaging runs, James Tautailalefua was put away by Ailand Davis-Pihema, Tautailalefua going 30 metres under the posts and converting his own try to take the score out to 28-4.

There was still eight minutes remaining when Wests cracked 30, Christian Urso dummying through the line before offloading to James Tautailalefua for his third try of the day and, with the conversion successful, Wests were away at 34-4.

With some desperately one-sided refereeing, Norths had to register a second try after Rua Ngati was sin-binned, and they did through Bailey Fisher, Fisher sliding through next to the uprights and, courtesy of Jeremy Trunzo-Braga's conversion, reduced the margin to 34-10 and, from the restart, going the distance with some hot potato. Keeley Bowen finished off the move, Trunzo-Braga converted but it was too little too late, Wests running out 34-16 winners.

Western Suburbs needed to summon all their reserves of determination to get past a plucky North Sydney 32-10 in the SG Ball last weekend.

Seven minutes had elapsed before Wests opened the scoring, a glorious offload from Taniela Paseka sending Letini Mesina over. Hosea Leuea slotted the kick from in front and Wests led 6-0 early.

The Bears returned serve on the quarter hour though, Josh Saunders showing enormous skill and strength to reach out and plant the ball inside the cornerpost on a slippery surface despite the attention of four Magpies. A touchline conversion from Jake Toby raised the rafters at TG Milner and locked the score at 6-6.

Both sides showed plenty of enterprise, however it was Wests who struck next, ironically via a barging run from Lenny Suani, who had just enough in the tank to get to the line with five Bears hanging off him, Hosea Leuea adding the extras to take back Wests' half-dozen advantage with ten minutes before halftime.

Norths were seeking to go to the sheds down by six in what would have been a good result after the first half, but it wasn't to be, Harrison Coskerie bursting clear and putting Jamen Johnson away, Johnson swerving in, out, in and away as he mesmerised the Bears' cover to touch down. Hosea Leuea sent the Magpies into the sheds with an 18-6 break.

It took 20 minutes of the second half for the halftime score to be broken, and it was Wests who cracked under the pressure first, a long ball almost being intercepted but then spilling for Sebastian Tuipoletu, who dove theatrically over in the left corner. Jake Toby was off target with the kick, but Norths had breathed new life into the game regardless at 18-10.

Norths were starting to find their rhythm and momentum, but it was crushed mercilessly with ten minutes to go, Hosea Leuea intercepting Jake Toby's long ball to score against the run of play and, with Leuea converting his on try, Wests could breathe again at 24-10.

No sooner had Wests halted the Bears' momentum, but they secured the points after an incisive break from Letini Mesina allowed Hosea Leuea to spread right, Tom Mata'afa stepping inside the scrambling defence to touch down for a 28-10 lead with six minutes remaining, Hosea Leuea hitting the post.

Wests iced the cake in the final minute, Letini Mesina popping a delightful short ball on for Jamen Johnson to grab his second with a scything run and, with Hosea Leuea pushing the kick wide, Wests ran out convincing 32-10 winners.

Wests bravely went down in the Harold Matthews to Manly 26-14 at Brookvale last Saturday.

Manly were first on the board after seven minutes to lead 6-0, after capitalising on a repeat set, Jesse Allan strolling over on the left flank after a series of overlaps caught Wests tired, Cooper Johns raising the flags.

Manly added to their lead after 19 minutes, Manly again taking advantage of sustained pressure, Max Lehmann forcing his way over. Cooper Johns couldn't add to the score on this occasion, the Eagles up 10-0.

Wests registered their first points in response right on the interval, Denzel Tavui crashing through. James Tautailalefua was unable to convert, Manly taking a 10-4 lead to oranges.

It was just like the old days to start the second half, Manly taking advatage of some "generous" refereeing to get across the line, Livingstone Chee-Kam forcing his way through the black and white defence after 36 minutes, Cooper Johns hooking the kick wide to leave the score at 14-4.

The Fibros were quick to hit back, Rua Ngati burrowing over from dummy half after a Manly knock-on to reduce the deficit to 14-10 after James Tautailalefua split the uprights.

Manly hit straight back, Sam Verrills going over from dummy half after a dropped pass that incensed the black and white faith as the referee waved play on. Johns finally got his radar back on line, the Eagles ahead 20-10 with 14 minutes to go.

Manly quickly added to their tally, a neat offload allowing Sam Verrills to grab his second of the day alongside the posts for a 26-10 lead after Johns converted.

Wests refused to go away, Ben Seufale going over from dummy half after a strong charge from Rua Ngati. James Tautailalefua pushed the rushed kick wide, buit it was too little too late, Manly running out 26-14 winners.

It was a tough day at the office for Wests' SG Ball side, as Manly piled on nine tries to run out 48-0 winners.

It took until halfway through the first half of an absorbing contest for first points to be registered, Jaiden Tarrant crashing over from close range for the home side, Bailey Shiach-Wise making it a 6-0 lead.

Manly doubled up from the restart, Bill Bainbridge backing up to score under the posts off a soft break. Shiach-Wise was on song from in front for a 12-0 Manly lead after 20 minutes.

Manly were turning it into a procession, a second man ball allowing Luke Polselli to stroll through over the line on the right side for a 16-0 lead, Shiach-Wise offline wth the kick.

Number four for Manly came to Ezera Chee-Kam, a glorious inside ball sending Polselli clear before a passing chain allowd Chee-Kam to touch down in the corner, Manly ahead 20-0 after the conversion attempt was pulled wide.

Wests' right side was crumbling, Brad Parker putting Ezera Chee-Kam away for his second and a 26-0 lead at halftime with the kick.

It took just fie minutes of the second half for Manly to break 30, Brad Parker crossing after the Magpie line got tangled up, Shiach-Wise extending the lead to 32-0.

Manly marched downfield from the kick-off and hoisted a bomb, Cody Abrahams on hand to clean up the spill and grab a try. Shiach-Wise was on target to put Manly up 38-0.

The home side broke 40 after 50 minutes, a grubber in behind the line pinballing around before Brad Parker claimed his second try and a 42-0 lead, Shiach-Wise unsiccessful with the conversion attempt.

It took a while, but Manly struck again with six minutes remaining, a booming 40-20 setting up some quality field position and Luke Polselli grabbing his second from a second man ball. Shiach-Wise slotted the two, the Eagles cruising to a 48-0 win.

Wests made it two from two to start 2015 as they downed the Central Coast 22-20 in a tough Harold Matthews contest at Campbelltown.

The visitors were the first on the board, a dubious penalty creating some field position for Sam Paul to utilise with an incisive run and, from the ensuing ruck, Tom Kati went over in the corner after a quick passing move. With Jake Slee’s boot off target, the Centurions were up 4-0 after 10 minutes.

Wests struck back after 18 minutes, a bustling run from Lucas Castle reaping dividends through the middle of the ruck, the Magpies up 6-4 courtesy of James Tautailofua’s conversion.

Wests’ lead lasted all of four minutes, however, as a handling error gave Central Coast possession 20 metres from the Magpie’s line, a neat wrap around involving

Chase Patridge seeing Harry Wilson touch down on the left wing. Jake Slee was far more accurate second time around, the Coast up 10-6 in sight of the interval.

Wests repeated their handling error and Central Coast repeated the left side try with four minutes until the break, Michael Kirwan going over on this occasion. Jake Slee could not add to the tally, the Coast going to the sheds ahead 14-6.

The second half began horribly for the Coast with the kick off going to ground and Wests took full advantage, Bob Faamita going over out wide, bringing the Magpies back to 14-10 as James Tautailofua was unsuccessful with the kick.

Wests sought to attack the Coast on the flanks and were successful through the centres, Saatchi Brown showing neat footwork to step over the line and, ten minutes into the second half, Wests led 16-14 courtesy of the conversion from James Tautailofua.

The Magpies were dominating second half proceedings, and Ailano Pihema cut the Coast defence to shreds to touch down with eight minutes remaining. James Tautailofua extended the lead 22-14 from ten metres in from touch, the Magpies looking good value for their second half effort.

The Coast would not go away, and they finished the scoring for the day, Sam Paul swooping on a loose ball to scoot 85 metres to touch down under the posts. Jake Slee converted, but it was to no avail, the siren sounding a mere 10 seconds later as Wests ran out victors 22-20.

The Central Coast left it too late to mount a comeback as Wests prevailed 28-26 at Campbelltown in round two of the SG Ball competition.

Wests took little time to establish their forward dominance, PJ Leifi barging down through the Centurions line to score on four minuites and, with Daniel Roberts on song, the Magpies led 6-0.

Central Coast needed to go wide to make any impression and they did so, Kiah Cooper touching down on the left after going through a considerable hole, the gap remaining at two after Matt Downey pulled the kick across the uprights.

Central Coast struck next after some enterprising work on the last tackle saw the Centurions run rather than kick, Jake Hardman crawling over the line after being brought down but not held by the cover. Matt Downey slotted the extras on this occasion, the Centurions up 10-6 after 23 minutes.

Wests returned serve with eight minutes before halftime off the back of a delightful solo effort from Hosea Leuea, whose footwork was Thurston-esque in slicing through. Daniel Roberts converted for a 12-10 lead to the home side.

Wests struck quickly again as Jake Scott was given an offload and the Centurions defence parted like the red sea, Scott going over untouched and suddenly, with Daniel Roberts converting, Wests led 18-10.

It was turning into a carve-up as Wests posted their fourth, Hans Taala strolling through the Coast defence next to the posts. Daniel Roberts’ kick made it 24-10 at the break.

13 minutes had elapsed before the scorers were troubled, Lachlan Gallegos going over for the Coast from dummy half after a long break from Scott Drinkwater. Matt Downey’s kick went wide though, Wests maintaining their 24-14 advantage.

Wests got their break back, though, after 52 minutes, as Justice Utatao went over in the north-eastern corner after a sweeping right spread. Daniel Roberts was offline from the touchline, the Magpies leading 28-14.

The Coast weren’t letting the Magpies get away though, Scott Drinkwater showing a huge step to go over under the posts to reduce the gap to 28-20 after Matt Downey’s conversion with 12 minutes remaining.

Matt Downey made it a grandstand finish after he touched down under the posts and, converting his own try, reduced the margin to 28-26 with four minutes to play but the Magpies hung on for a close win.

Tomorrow your Magpies will face Hills District and Concord-Burwood in a trial double header at Norford Park, Sefton. Sydney Shield will kick off at 10am, with the Ron Massey Cup commencing at 11:30am.

Blacktown Trial Match Review

On Saturday the 14^th of February the Wests Magpies Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield teams played a combined trial against Blacktown Workers. This was the first hit out for 2015, with a lot of new faces on show, Blacktown already having a trial against Wenty the previous week.

The first three 20 minutes showed some good signs with the last two becoming a little messy, as most trials do. There were some solid efforts in defence on the day and the boys showed that they are willing to put their bodies on the line and take pride in their defence and tryline. We defended well for most parts of the game but like all teams in their first trial found out that we still have some areas we really need to improve on. Back rowers Tom Morrison, Sama Sauvao, and David Harris already showed good work rates with tackle counts in the mid to high twenties and doing their fair share of hit ups.

In attack we got to see some new players to the club, who showed good speed and footwork with both centres, Nathan Hourigan and Phillip Brombal, scoring runaway tries. James Goring helped the forwards out with some solid scoots coming out of our own half and earning some quick play the balls. We did well getting out of trouble but let ourselves down at times by making errors on the second and third tackles, allowing Blacktown off the hook.

Our attack in their half showed some good signs, Wayde Dunley setting up two tries with Jimmy Laulilii and Jacob Nansen running good leads off Wayde.

We still need some work in our set up when we are attacking the opposition try line but as combinations improve we should see this come along with the rest of our game.

For our first hit out the Magpies showed some promising signs but as we all know will need to work hard and continue to improve in all areas to be a threat at the end of the season. However, looking good for now.

Western Suburbs commenced their 2015 Harold Matthews campaign with a blistering 32-4 demolition of St. George at Kogarah.

A physical opening from the red V saw Wests attempt an offload which was knocked down in the tackle by the home side and, from the ensuing scrum, Sam Rembridge cut the Dragons D open to race 90 metres to open the scoring at 6-0 to the visitors after four minutes courtesy of the conversion to James Tautailalefua.

A strong set from the kick off created space on the right, and the redV became the red l l as James Tautailalefua strolled through untouched out wide. Tautailalefua pulled the conversion wide, the Magpies up 10-0 inside 7 minutes.

Forward passes dominated the next ten minutes until Wests found space on the left, James Tautailalefua showing too much speed for the covering defence in a 70 metre dash to the line before converting his own try for a 16-0 advantage after 20 minutes.

Saints had no answer to the man mountains in the Magpie pack and, exhausted on the back of two penalties, the Dragons switched off, Rua Ngati diving over from a quick tap from two metres, Wests taking their 20-0 to half time after James Tautailalefua hit the upright.

The Dragons needed to be first on the board after the interval and did so, Mitchell Clift muscling his way through the middle of the ruck to grab four, but not six, as his kick struck metal after two minutes of the second stanza.

Wests made amends at the 40 minute mark, though, Ray Ngati sneaking under everyone to burrow in. Tautailalefua split the sticks and Wests regained their halftime adavantage and then some, ahead 26-4 with 20 minutes to go.

Thankfully there was no ground announcer on duty, because they would have been having nightmares watching the James Tautailalefua show, as the Magpies custodian sliced through off a scrum win to go 90 metres to touch down under the posts and claim his trick and, with a conversion thrown in for good measure, a 32-4 break for Wests with 14 minutes remaining on the clock.

Wests nearly signed off with another one, but Maurice Faaae couldn’t keep the ball under control as he crossed the line, the Magpies taking the two points by 32-4.

St. George dominated a physical game against Wests, coming out 32-16 victors at Kogarah.

Wests opened the scoring with a nice piece of numerical symmetry, number eleven PJ Leifi crossing on the right side after as many minutes off a short out ball. Daniel Roberts was unsuccessful with the kick, the Magpies up 4-0.

St. George were finding the bigger black and white pack too much to handle, and a simple short ball on to the chest of Julius Lavaao was too much for the Dragons, Lavaao barging over adjacent to the posts for a 10-0 lead after 23 minutes courtesy of Daniel Roberts.

The red V finally found their way to the line after 31 minutes, a series of angle passes finally ending with Jai Doolan streaking in under the uprights, the Dragons’ deficit reduced to four after Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga slotted from in front.

The Dragons struck immediately, a bomb allowed to bounce by Wests and Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga snapping up the crumbs to dart over before converting his own try to give St. George an unlikely 12-10 lead at half time.

St. George picked up where they left off in the second half, and after five minutes, Jayden El-Jalkh snuck through the centre of the ruck to touch down and, with Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga’s kick successful, the Dragons were out to 18-10.

The natives began to grow restless as both sides turned up the physicality, but it was Wests who kept their heads, Tom Angel showing incredible strength to go through five Dragons in 15 metres to touch down. Daniel Roberts added the extras, and the Magpies were back to within two points after 57 minutes.

The Dragons, though, refused to allow the Magpies any leeway, Jai Doolan burrowing over after a quick play the ball caught Wests too slow to get back. Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga failed to convert, however, the Dragons only getting back to a six point break with 16 minutes remaining.

The Dragons kicking game was something to behold, a midfield bomb falling perfectly in between converging Magpie defenders but not before Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga marked the ball and popped it back, Ben Cassell showing too much speed to get to the corner first. Aufaga-Toomaga pushed the kick wide again, but the red and white started to look comfortable at 26-16 with ten to go.

The Dragons put the game to bed with three minutes to go, Eddie Faalua catching a tiring Wests defence off guard and pushing over the line. Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga nailed the conversion, the Dragons running out 32-16 victors.

This Saturday sees three grades going around for the Magpies, with the Junior Reps facing St. George at Kogarah's Win Jubilee Oval. The Harold Matthews will kick off proceedings at 10am before the SG Ball boys show their stuff at 11-30.

Then it is time to head up King George's Road and down the M4 for the first Ron Massey Cup trial of 2015, as your Magpies face off against Blacktown Workers at Mitchell High School, Keyworth Drive, Blacktown, with the action getting underway at 2-30pm.
