Westwood SAT Scores Highest in Region

The entire graduating class members of Westwood Class of 2016 are all away at college now, but we are still talking about their accomplishments on campus. This class of soon-to-be business owners, doctors, engineers, teachers, accountants, farmers, nurses, lawyers and community leaders exceeded both the Georgia and National Averages on their SAT scores.

The Class of 2016 achieved an average of 1568 of a possible 2400 on verbal, math and writing. Mac Collins led his class and the entire county as the STAR Student with the highest SAT in Mitchell County scoring an impressive 2110. The Georgia average is 1450, which lags behind the national SAT average score of 1490. One notable difference at Westwood is that all students are required to take the SAT, not just the top students. An average of the top 10 Westwood graduates last year is 1734. The highest SAT score in the state is Gwinnett Math, Science & Technology High School with a score of 1834.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution recently prepared a database comparing SAT scores of all the public high schools in Georgia. Why would you want to know what other schools were scoring? Parents care about a high school’s average SAT score because higher SAT scores can indicate a better quality of education and a better quality of student at that school. The SAT measures academic ability gained from your educational experience. Simply, the better the quality of education you receive, the better you’ll perform on the SAT. Additionally, your SAT score is affected by how much you prepare for the test.

Westwood’s high average SAT score in an indication that their students are more invested in their education and committed to getting into a four-year college. These students study and spend more time preparing to take the SAT. Westwood faculty members provide SAT test prep utilizing Kahn Academy curriculum to provide practice testing to improve student’s test scores.

Attending the college of a student’s choice is becoming more and more competitive. Colleges have more stringent criteria for admission with one of those being a higher SAT or ACT score. Parents care about a higher SAT because it increases their child’s ability to be accepted into the college of his/her own choice, and also increases the possibility of potential scholarship money. Education of your child is a parent’s choice. When you choose to send your child to a high school with a higher average SAT score and more rigorous academic program, they’ll likely be surrounded by other hard-working students and determined, dedicated teachers, and thus receive a higher quality of education. That is certainly the norm at Westwood, as the Class of 2017 has already exceeded this year’s scores with an average of 1674 on their SAT tests during their Junior year. “Westwood’s long-standing tradition of excellence continues as the primary focus remains on offering a quality, college-preparatory curriculum in a Christian environment” according to Headmaster Ross Worsham. Wildcat Fitness Uniforms for Sale

These are NOT mandatory PE uniforms. They are quick drying and will be comfortable. The shirts can also be worn to school each day. The photographer from Tifton is coming on July 21st to take pictures for the Sports Program. Our first home game is the day after school starts, so we are backing the pictures up one week so that we can get it finished. The times will be as follows:

Rescheduled Baseball Games

The 4:00 varsity home game with Southland originally scheduled for March 4 is now rescheduled for April 25 at 4:30.

The 4:30 varsity home game with Deerfield originally scheduled for March 18 is now rescheduled for home on April 12 (the original away date to play Deerfield). We will play a doubleheader beginning at 4:00.

There is a lot of excitement on campus about our girls Lady Basketball team heading to the state semi finals this Friday at the Mercer University Coliseum. Here's your latest news. SPREAD THE WORD!

Friday at 1pm, line Broad Street. Cheer on our Lady Cats Basketball team as they head to Macon to the State Semifinals Friday. We are asking our community to wish the players good luck and send them off to Macon in style by lining Broad Street Friday at 1:00. Bring your signs and pom poms and cheer them on as they head to Macon. Help us spread the word and GO LADY CATS!
Early Dismissal Grades 7-12. We are dismissing school at 2pm for grades 7-12. Lots of fans and families are heading to Macon. Wear orange and head up to Macon.
State Semifinal Ballgame. The Lady Wildcats play the Heritage School at 5:30 in the Mercer University basketball arena. Be there early, get a seat and GET LOUD 'cause we're PROUD. GO LADY CATS! ALL THE WAY TO STATE!!!! WE WANT IT!

Boys play Valwood on Friday at 5:30 at Darton.
Girls play Deerfield on Friday at 7:00 at Darton.

Westwood Hosting Region Basketball Tonight

Just a reminder that Westwood will host Region Basketball games tonight, Tuesday, February 16th. Prices are $6.00 for students and $8.00 for adults. Only GISA passes will be accepted at the gate as per region policy. Times are 4:30, 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm.

Westwood boys will play the 7:30 pm game Terrell Academy. Everyone come out and support the Cats!

Shotgun Team 2nd in State! Congratulations

The Wildcat Shotgun team competed for state this weekend and won second place.

Individual winners include:

Fourth Place at State

These students won fourth place in the state competition yesterday. All-State Acting Awards were given to Cheater and Muggs, Matthew Tucker and Dru Ford. Polly Pepper, Sydney Lamberth was awarded All-State Honorable Mention.

We're so proud of our whole drama club, the cast of the One Act Play and Literary Coach Azalee Vereen! We're proud of you!

White Christmas Items Being Collected for 2015

It is that time of year again. We're collecting items school-wide to make food boxes for some in our community who need it most. Each class is assigned to bring items. Please help out by sending your items into the school to your child's homeroom teacher during December.

Today, Thursday November 19, we had a dress down day to raise money for the Mitchell County Food Bank. (Hats off to Mrs. Gail Williams and the Y Club.) Many classes have packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and Backpacks for children in Appalachia.

Remember that the Tuesday we return, December 1, we'll have a schoolwide dress down day to support Thornton West. Please send $2 or more to help the family.

Merry Christmas to friends and family! Remember that Jesus is the reason for the season!
