"Media Trial different from Demand for Accountability" - Former Lands Minister Tells Udom's Critics

A former Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has criticized the latest media trial targeting the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

At Press Briefing held over the weekend in Eket, Chief Essien said although the demand for accountability is fundamental, such must however follow legitimate processes.

"At some point, we must differentiate genuine demands for accountability from opportunistic grandstanding. Public officials are, by default, subject to scrutiny by the EFCC, ICPC, and other anti-graft agencies. If there are legitimate grounds for prosecution, due process will take its course. Until then, let us refrain from fueling baseless media trials.

"I have previously criticised Udom Emmanuel, just as I have done with Obong Victor Attah and Chief Godswill Akpabio. My criticisms were never for financial inducement, personal gain, or public appeasement. Rather, they were based on principle."

"Accountability is fundamental, but it must be pursued through legitimate channels. Justice is not served by reckless declarations of guilt in the media to advance a particular agenda", he said.

The former National Assembly Member further accused self-proclaimed crusaders, especially, Fejiro Oliver of plotting sensational media trials to extort money from unsuspecting individuals.

He alleged that Oliver's strategy involves making unfounded allegations and then proceeding with a media trial, even without tangible evidence, an approach, the Elder Statesman noted undermines the legitimate pursuit of accountability and justice.

"The latest drama in the long-standing tradition of sensational media trials, where self-proclaimed crusaders embark on arranged campaigns, luring unsuspecting persons into what ultimately amounts to an elaborate extortion scheme.

"A notable figure in this game is Mr. Fejiro Oliver, whose so-called "anti-corruption" enterprise is based in the United States but curiously set up an African office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom", he added.

He also took a swipe at Senator Ita Enang for aligning himself with Oliver's tactics, advising that Enang should focus more on championing legislative reforms against corruption.

While condemning what he described as ethnic undertones in the pursuit of accountability, Chief Nduese stressed that corruption, accountability, and the rule of law transcend ethnic affiliations.

"Whether one hails from Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, Eket, or any other part of the state, the law remains the law. Those purporting to fight corruption must do so with fairness and objectivity, rather than sowing discord along ethnic lines to manipulate public sentiment", Chief Essien noted.

Some trace the legend of Friday the 13th back to the Last Supper, when the 13th person on the table became the betrayer; others link it to the Knights Templar's downfall which also records the involvement of a 13th bad luck-bearing personage. Even Norse mythology speaks the 13th factor in Loki's betrayal.

Whatever the truth, fallacy or dearth of both, the 13th day on the calender has become synonymous with ill luck, fear, and trepidation. The myriad of superstitions deepen and get worse when the 13th day falls on a Friday!

But what happens when a community dares to defy such myth? What happens when collective spirit and determination collide head-on with superstition? This is the story of Akwa Ibom's Guinness World Record for the Largest Group of Carol Singers executed on Friday, December 13, 2014. It remains a testament to the power of our unity and the triumph of hope over fear that in the face of global superstition, Akwa Ibom children dared to defy the odds.

On Friday, December 13, 2014, at the Uyo Township Stadium, 25,272 young voices from every corner of the state converged to create an unforgettable Guinness World Record for the Largest Group of Carol Singers on the face of the planet.

This monumental achievement not only shattered the myth of Friday the 13th but also epitomized the unyielding spirit of the Akwa Ibom people.

Now as December 2024 approaches, to mark this decade-long milestone, we pay heartfelt tribute to the thousands of Akwa Ibom children who volunteered and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set the new and currently unbroken World Record. While their selflessness and dedication embodied the true essence of the rising Akwa Ibom spirit, their labour of love will forever be etched in the annals of world history.

In a remarkable twist of fate, this year's Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols Festival, the 17th edition, returns to its roots on Friday, December 13, 2024 - the same day that our Guinness World Record was set a decade ago. What a profound opportunity for the current organizers to draw inspiration from the past, inject new ideas, and propel the event to even greater heights!

Let us honour the can-do spirit of our youth, who, against all odds, pulled off this incredible feat. May their triumph inspire future generations to embrace challenges, shatter myths, and shape their own history.

The Conference of Online Publishers in Akwa Ibom State (COOPA), has congratulated the state Governor, Pastor (Dr) Umo Eno, on his award of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration, by the University of Uyo.

In a statement signed by the Chancellor of COOPA, Mr. Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, over the weekend, the group described the Governor's academic accomplishment as a significant milestone that demonstrates his commitment to harnessing knowledge to drive growth and development in Akwa Ibom State.

"As a seasoned businessman, clergy, and management expert, you have consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, driving positive change in various sectors."

"As Governor, you have shown a strong passion for Agricultural, infrastrural and rural development through the ARISE Agenda, which has positively impacted numerous lives."

Political Leader of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, General Paul Isang rtd, has commended Governor Umo Eno

for ensuring that the Model Primary Health Centre, Oboyo Ikot Ita project has become a reality.

General Isang made this commendation in Uyo while fielding questions from newsmen on the heels of the inauguration of the Primary Health Centre by Governor Umo Eno on Monday, 4th November 2024.

According to him, Governor Umo Eno's oft-repeated commitment to Rural Development as enshrined in his ARISE Agenda is no longer a political talk, but a vision that has been executed with the number of rural projects including roads, model Primary Healthcare Centres and Schools that are being inaugurated across the State with Nsit Ibom as a major beneficiary.

Gen. Isang maintained that healthcare will become affordable across the State, and Nsit Ibom people are happy to be benefitting from the spread of life-touching projects.

"Governor Umo Eno is advancing healthcare by constructing fully equipped model Primary Health Centres like we now have in Nsit Ibom and thereby making healthcare accessible and affordable to all across the State," General Isang said.

The elder statesman thanked the Governor for choosing Nsit Ibom Local Government as one of the many project sites he visited personally to inaugurate the project, harping that this also allowed his people to interact with and also have their Governor feel their pulse.

On the yet-to-be-completed Ikot Akpan Abia-Ikot Iko-Ikot Akpaedu-Oboyo Ikot Ita- Obo Atai-Enen Nsit Road, General Isang expressed confidence that Governor Umo Eno would see to the completion and inauguration of the road which he said is not only a major artery linking Nsit Ibom villages to Uyo the capital city and the State Police Headquarters but vital access to the just commissioned Primary Health Centre.

He stressed that Governor Umo Eno has proven that he is indeed determined to complete projects inherited from his predecessor said the road which opens up several villages in Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan and Nsit Ibom Local Government Areas will further consolidate the rural development component of the ARISE Agenda.

The Nsit Ibom Political Leader however pleaded that the State Government should consider establishing a Secondary School in that neighbourhood being a pressing need of the people, which he noted will complement the Educational advancement theme of the ARISE Agenda.

General Isang further explained that the political leadership and entire people of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area are very appreciative of Governor Umo Eno's compassionate approach to governance and assured that, they will continue to accord unwavering support and loyalty to the administration and pray for successful implementation of the ARISE Agenda to its logical conclusion to crown the Golden Era.

He accordingly tasked the good people of Nsit Ibom to reciprocate the good gestures of Governor Umo Eno by identifying with and aligning positively with the ARISE Agenda so that the full benefits of good governance will be maximised by the Council going forward.

The Niger Delta Ex-Agitators Forum has voiced their concerns over a growing trend of political marginalization and injustice within Nigeria’s political system, particularly towards Southern leaders. The forum, representing a group of former agitators from the oil-rich Niger Delta region, decried what they perceive as a systematic effort to undermine Southern leadership in the country.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the forum highlighted a historical pattern of Southern leaders facing political opposition and agitation, citing the presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who was denied a second term due to strong Northern opposition. Now, with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu barely a year old, the forum expressed alarm over renewed calls from Northern groups for his removal. This, they argue, is part of a larger pattern that has destabilized the nation and eroded its unity.

"Despite the significant security challenges and other pressing issues that plagued the administration of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, he remained in power for a two-term tenure of eight years, largely unchallenged," the statement read. The group called for an immediate end to what they described as a "glaring disparity" in the treatment of Southern leaders, insisting that this pattern must be put to an end if the unity and stability of Nigeria are to be preserved.

The forum declared their unequivocal support for President Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope Agenda," describing it as a comprehensive blueprint for addressing the complex challenges facing Nigeria. They praised Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to reforms and development, urging all Nigerians to support his vision for a united and prosperous nation.

Speaking through Ambassador Dr. Alban Paulinus, Chairman, Akwa Ibom Ex-Agitators Forum, the forum also addressed the historical bias against Southern Senate Presidents, listing several past leaders from the South who were either impeached or removed before completing their tenures. They contrasted this with Northern Senate Presidents who served full terms without significant challenges. The recent calls for the impeachment of Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, the current President of the 10th Senate, were seen as a continuation of this troubling trend.

"The Senate Presidency position must be a symbol of national unity, not a weapon of regional domination," the group asserted. They vowed to resist any attempts to impeach Akpabio and insisted that he should be allowed to complete his tenure without distractions.

Addressing political concerns, the forum called for the immediate establishment of a South-South Development Commission, similar to development agencies created in other geopolitical zones of Nigeria. They emphasized that this demand is distinct from the existing Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which serves oil-producing states in multiple regions. The forum urged Senator Akpabio and other federal legislators from the South-South region to expedite the passage of a bill establishing this commission.

The forum called on their brethren from the South-West and South-East regions to join forces in forming a Southern Nigerian Movement. This movement, they proposed, would aim to protect, project, and defend the political, economic, and regional interests of Southern Nigeria. They also extended an invitation to the Middle Belt region to join in addressing the pressing security challenges affecting them.

The press conference concluded with a powerful call to action, urging all Nigerians and the international community to recognize the need for change and justice in Nigeria. "A single stick may smoke, but it will not burn," they said, emphasizing that only through unity can the rights, interests, and future of all Nigerians be secured.

EFCC Must Wade into Breach of Trust and Ethics by AKSG at Ibom Icon Hotel

The business and investment community in Nigeria is reeling from a scandal that has engulfed the Akwa Ibom State Government (AKSG). Dubbed the "Ibom Hotelgate Scandal," this controversy centers around the unlawful termination of a Management Services Agreement with the Icon Group, a reputable Pan-African hotel chain, and the hasty appointment of an inexperienced, newly formed company.

The Icon Group, known for its high standards in hotel management, had been managing the prestigious Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort. In a move that has shocked industry insiders, the AKSG abruptly terminated the agreement with the Icon Group. This action not only breached the contract but also suggested a calculated effort to oust the Icon Group without due process or justification.

In a perplexing twist, the AKSG awarded a new management contract to a company incorporated just three weeks before the termination. This new entity, owned by the former CEO of the Icon Group’s Nigerian subsidiary, lacked any track record in hotel management. The clear conflict of interest and the suspicious timing of this arrangement have raised serious questions about the motivations behind AKSG's decisions.

To conceal its unethical actions, the AKSG engaged in an elaborate cover-up. Despite the termination, the state continued to use the Icon Group’s brand in its marketing and social media platforms, misleading the public into believing that the Icon Group was still managing the hotel. This deception was exposed only after the Icon Group issued a caveat emptor notice, clarifying its dissociation from the hotel.

Further complicating the matter, the AKSG coerced key expatriate personnel from the Icon Group to resign and re-engage with the new management company. This manipulation aimed to maintain the facade of the Icon Group's involvement, while in reality, the group had been forcibly removed and prevented from fulfilling its contractual obligations.

The fallout from the Ibom Hotelgate Scandal has been severe. Investor confidence, crucial for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), has been deeply shaken. The actions of the AKSG have sent a clear message to the international investment community: the state cannot be trusted to honor its commitments or uphold ethical business practices. This erosion of trust is likely to result in a significant decline in FDI, stifling economic growth and development in the region.

Given the severity of the allegations and the potential financial crimes involved, it is imperative that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducts a thorough investigation into the Ibom Hotelgate Scandal. The investigation should focus on:

- The legality of the termination of the management agreement with the Icon Group.

- The circumstances surrounding the awarding of the new management contract to a company owned by the former CEO of the Icon Group’s Nigerian subsidiary.

- Financial irregularities and potential embezzlement of funds in the termination and re-awarding process.

- The continued use of the Icon Group’s brand and the coercion of expatriate staff to maintain a false public image.

The Ibom Hotelgate Scandal is a clarion call for immediate action by the EFCC. The unlawful termination of the Icon Group’s management agreement, the dubious replacement, and the elaborate cover-up highlight a pattern of unethical and potentially criminal behavior by the AKSG. To restore investor confidence and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability, a thorough and impartial investigation is essential.

The EFCC must act swiftly to investigate these allegations and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. Only through decisive action can Akwa Ibom begin to rebuild its reputation as a trustworthy destination for foreign direct investment.

As the dust settles on the Ibom Hotelgate Scandal, the eyes of the international business community remain fixed on Akwa Ibom. The outcome of the EFCC investigation will not only determine the future of the individuals involved but also set a precedent for how business and governance are conducted in Nigeria. Management Contract: AKSG, Icon Group Battle in Court Over 5-Star Hotel

Icon Group Warns AKSG to Maintain Status Quo Ante Until Determination of 3 Pending Lawsuits

Top hospitality outfit Icon Hotels Group has told the Akwa Ibom State Government to maintain the status quo ante on the management of the state’s 5-star hotel until the determination of the three pending suits in different courts in Uyo and Calabar.

In a Caveat Emptor made available to TheMail on Monday, the group stated that it is aware that the state government is currently sourcing a substantive manager for the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort, formerly Le Meridien Hotel.

There are pending cases in the State High Court, Federal High Court, both in Uyo, and the Court of Appeal in Calabar involving both parties.

The court cases are occasioned by an alleged breach of contract on the part of the AKSG, where the government abruptly ended the management contract it signed with Icon Group.

In the Caveat Emptor issued on behalf of Icon Group by its legal representative, Abu Samson Esq. of Abu Samson & Co, 29B Colorado Street, Ministers Hill, Maitama, Abuja, the hospitality outfit warned that anyone or company who intends to show interest in taking over the management of the Ibom Hotels & Golf Resort in a substantive capacity would be doing so at his/her/their own peril.

“It has come to the notice of our client, Icon Hotels & Resort Nigeria Limited, that despite pending court matters challenging the purported termination of the management contract agreement executed between the Akwa Ibom State Government and our client, the Akwa Ibom State Government is actually sourcing a substantive manager for the said hotel while the suit is pending in court.

“Parties and counsel were duly served all court processes, and parties have also taken steps by exchanging pleadings and are presumed to understand the principles of law that they cannot take further steps in negotiating, appointing, and executing another contract with another substantive manager for the hotel until all matters are dispensed with,” the Caveat Emptor reads.

The Christmas season is a time to love, spread joy across the board and put smiles on the faces of people irrespective of their societal status.

It is on this premise that the General Overseer of His Divine Redeemed World Ministries, Onna, Apostle Elijah Jack dressed the faces of some physically challenged persons with smiles and filled their hearts with joy by gifting them with Christmas packages.

He performed this kind gesture during Sunday 17th December Service at His Divine Redeemed World Ministries, Mkpok in Onna.

Apostle Jack, an Onna-born philanthropist cum Apostle, has over the years shown his avowed determination and commitment towards adding value to humanity and to give a sense of belonging to the present-day generation.

While presenting the gifts to the beneficiaries, he charged the congregation on the need to ensure that they try as much as possible to put smiles on someone's face in this Yuletide season irrespective of the size of the gift. He said little things like this attract blessings from God.

The gift items include; bags of rice, cash gifts and table calendars.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Friday Udo Friday thanked Apostle Elijah Jack for allowing God to use him to be a blessing to the physically challenged and the less privileged.

He prayed that God should bless him, his ministry, his household and give him the enablement and strength to continue his good deeds.

In the ministration titled, 'When God is involved', Apostle Elijah Jack told the congregation that there's nothing on earth that is impossible for God to do and that God is an all-knowing and powerful God.

Reading from Luke 7:11-12, he charged members to always put God first and involve God in life and activities, while establishing the fact that the involvement of God brings about the divine attribute that will propel man into his glorious life.

He said that when God is involved in a man's life, he struggles less because God takes charge and makes the impossible to become possible and makes favour to prevail over disfavour and disappointment.

"All we need to survive this turbulent world is to invite God into the affairs of our lives" Apostle Jack said.

CSOs Thumb-down Etekamba Umoren's Appointment as INEC Rep

The congress of Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria has rejected the appointment of Etekamba Umoren as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The controversy surrounding Umoren's nomination stems from his alleged affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

President Bola Tinubu recently appointed Umoren and eight other RECs, with at least four of them having ties to the president and his party.

The CSOs' rejection of Umoren as the INEC REC highlights the concerns about the independence and impartiality of the electoral commission.

CSOs play a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process, and their opposition to Umoren's appointment raises questions about the credibility of future elections in Akwa Ibom State.

A release made available to the Press by the organization cites Section 156(1)(a) and Third Schedule, Part 1, Item F, Paragraph 14(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which outrightly disqualifies any person in partisan politics and card-carrying member of a political party from being appointed into INEC as an electoral umpire.

"That, Mr. Etekamba Umoren is a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State who had also campaigned for the APC during the elections."

"That, the appointment of Mr. Etekamba Umoren will further undermine citizens’ confidence in INEC and increase mistrust in the commission."

"That, the appointment will also jeopardize the trust of other political parties in the commission," the release stated.

The release also states that "as civil society organizations that were part of the struggle for the return to democracy in Nigeria in 1999, we will not allow any undemocratic action that will truncate our hard-earned democracy, which some of our colleagues unfortunately paid the supreme price with their lives."

The CSOs have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw the appointment of Mr. Etekamba Umoren as a Resident Electoral Commissioner in INEC from Akwa Ibom State, in the interest of the public.

"Mr. Etekamba Umoren does not meet the constitutional requirements of being non-partisan as defined by Section 156(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to be appointed as an INEC Commissioner," they said.

Speaking through the Director of the Center For Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN), Otuekong Franklyn Isong, the CSOs said that Mr. Etekamba Umoren is not only a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress but an active politician who had held several political appointments, including as the Secretary to the Government of Akwa Ibom State under the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), before he defected to the ruling APC in Akwa Ibom State on the 8th of August, 2018.

They also added that his last political appointment was the Chief of Staff to Senator Godswill Akpabio when Senator Akpabio was the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Ministry.

CSOs teaming up to call for Umoren's removal include People’s Rights to Life Development Foundation, Vital Partners for Development, Comrade Education Support Associates, Civil Society Network for Development, and Youth & Girls Child Education Network.

Etekamba's appointment has already triggered outrage among Nigerians, with many individuals and groups calling for the withdrawal of the appointment by President Tinubu because Mr. Umoren had openly declared his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The State Coordinator of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Control and Elimination programme, Akwa Ibom State, Dr Aniekeme Uwah JP has commended the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno for establishing the new Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in the state.

The new ministry, which has been mandated to ensure adequate potable water supply in the state with focus on our schools as well as ensuring reduction in open defeacation through the provisions of toilet facilities in various schools are very important components of WASH ( Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), which is a very critical strategy in the control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) especially the Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) or intestinal worms.

STH is a preventive chemotherapy NTDs which is endemic in all the Local Government Areas in the state. The 3 (three) common types are round worm ( ascaris lumbricoides), whip worm( trichuris trichuria) and hook worm( necator americanus or ancylostoma duodenale).

STH has a huge negative impact on maternal and child health. The impact includes anaemia in pregnancy which could lead to Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), Intrauterine Death (IUD) and even maternal death due to severe anaemia.

In the child, it could lead to malnutrition, poor physical development and reduced cognitive functions leading to poor academic performance.

Akwa Ibom State is indeed moving in the right direction under the leadership of Pastor Umo Eno.

BEING THE SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PASTOR UMO ENO, GOVERNOR, AKWA IBOM STATE, AT THE SWEARING IN OF COMMISSIONERS, BANQUET HALL, GOVERNMENT HOUSE, UYO-JULY 27TH, 2023.

PROTOCOL

1. Let me again, congratulate you on your nomination into the State Executive Council, (EXCO) and your successful clearance by the State House of Assembly.

2. Permit me to thank the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Udeme Otong and indeed the Honourable Members of the House, for the expeditious manner they handled the screening and eventual clearance of the Honourable Commissioners-designate, who have now just been sworn in as substantive Commissioners.

3. I have been asked this question severally: “Your Excellency, we had expected to see the injection of new blood into the State EXCO, why are you bringing back the same old blood”?

4. My answer has been standard and direct: You do not abandon your foot soldiers shortly after a successful execution of a major victory. I know these ‘old blood’ very well. We went to the battle to continue good governance together, we were in the trenches together; we swatted away the bullets of vicious attacks together, most of you spent long hours traversing the length and crannies of this State together with me, most of you took political arrows on my behalf.

5. Therefore, it is only fitting, we bring back tested hands with the right experience and who understand the System, to join us, and work for continuation of the peace, growth and transformation of our State in line with our ARISE Agenda and the Roadmap they will soon be presented.

6. Today, as Honourable Commissioners, you have a well-distilled and condensed Roadmap to guide you in the execution of the responsibilities of your office. You may be old blood, but what you have now, is a new Template of Execution and Implementation and you are expected to wholly execute all that is within your areas of responsibility as outlined in the Roadmap. The timelines and the deliverables are well spelt-out. You were brought back to ensure and facilitate continuity and you must justify this trust we have invested in you.

7. My political father used to say something very fundamentally apt, which I want to repeat here: Please do not come to me, to report efforts, bring me results.”

8. Therefore, my dear colleagues, Akwa Ibom people want results; results in ensuring food security through Agricultural revolution we have promised to ignite. Akwa Ibom people are waiting for us to connect the dots in the rural areas, by bringing massive development in those areas and change the narratives and circumstance of our rural dwellers.

9. Akwa Ibom people are looking forward to seeing more expansions in our infrastructure. We owe them the continuous joy of living in a safe and secure state, which informed our decision to create a new Ministry - Ministry of Internal Security, dedicated to ensuring continuous peace and security of lives and property of our people both in the urban and rural areas.

10. This Ministry will continue to collaborate with our security agencies and work towards ensuring the peace we have enjoyed is maintained and deepened, so investors and tourists will continue to make our State their destination of choice. We owe our children the best public funded education possible. Most of us here, are products of public schools, we must continue to invest heavily in both the physical structures and the quality of learning, so our children may be competitive and equipped with the right skills-set

11. Let me state here very firmly: All political appointees must go back and stimulate rural developments in your respective wards and local government councils. That responsibility starts with you! You must work with the people in your respective wards, you must let the people feel the impact of governance. Governance starts at the grassroots, you must be a symbol of government in your local government and ward levels, and must engage your people regularly . We will monitor this closely, so please take this very seriously.

12. This government is determined to expand development in our rural areas, we must grow our people and ignite in them a spirit of hard work and a sense of responsibility. Our youths must be engaged so we can stem a culture of entitlement, without corresponding work, which as you all know, is alien to us, but which, sadly appears to have been internalized by our people. Our people are exceptionally gifted and all we need, is to galvanize them towards productive enterprises.

13. Let me again congratulate the Honorary Special Advisers that were appointed yesterday. I ask you to work collaboratively with them to advance our development. The job and responsibilities of each of the Honourable Commissioners and Special Adviser are well spelt -out in the Roadmap, so I expect you to work harmoniously, so together, we will deliver good governance to our people and prove to the world that indeed, this great State, truly is the Land of Promise

14. The first EXCO, will sit tomorrow morning at 11 am and afterwards, you may enjoy ‘Happy hour’ with people. Congratulations once again, my dear colleagues and God’s speed!

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has formally launched his administration's blueprint, the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda, with a call for reorientation among government functionaries, youths and entire citizenry for its optimal implementation.

Speaking at the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda Formal Launch ceremony, Thursday, at the Ibom Icon Hotel and Golf Resort, the governor said the new governance roadmap comes with a lot of deviation from the normal to ensure delivery of it dividends to the people.

He stressed that approvals for Executive memos will henceforth be earned by situating proposals within the dictate of the ARISE Agenda comprising Agricultural revolution, tourism and environmental management, Rural development, women and youth empowerment, Infrastructural maintenance and advancement, Security management, quality health sector management and education, economic, industrial and social advancement.

Governor Eno thanked former Governors Victor Attah and Udom Emmanuel for buying into his vision and supporting his emergence as governor of the state and particularly appreciated the Chairman of the Ibom Dialogue summit, Senator Udoma Udoma and Professor Barth Nnaji for investing their wealth of experience to aid his administration, while lauding the ingenuity of his Economic Adviser, Dr. Uduak Inam, for developing the elaborate document that communicates his governance vision.

The governor declared the visibly displayed A.R.I.S.E. Agenda insignia as an approved toga for government functionaries and on government souvenirs as indication of commitment to the vision.

Consequently, the governor announced the appointment of Sir Raphael Edem as his Senior Special Assistant on Brand Management and Marketing as well as Barrister Morgan Ekanem as his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties.

He also announced that a Project Monitoring and Technical Review Committee will be constituted to ensure that all government contracts are processed through it to ensure compliance with due process and accountability and cautioned the Committee members against any form of compromise.

In her opening remarks, the Deputy Governor and Planning Committee Chairman for Ibom Dialogue, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi, commended the Governor on the ARISE Agenda which, she said will serve as a guide for the development of the state.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, on his part, commended Governor Eno's ingenuity in the crafting of the ARISE Agenda, describing him as not just a visionary leader but one poised to implement his vision and therefore pledged the cooperation of the State Legislature towards the achievement of the ARISE Agenda.

Unveiling the blueprint, the Economic Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Uduak Inam, said the agenda was borne out of the need to consolidate on the performance of past administrations.

Dr. Inam described the Agenda as the flagship that would drive development effort in the present administration.

In an epochal event that marked the commencement of a new chapter in Akwa Ibom's development, Governor Pastor Umo Eno, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State unveiled the ARISE Agenda, a visionary plan aimed at propelling the state's socio-economic growth and transforming the lives of its citizens.

The launch which served as the culmination of a weeklong series of activities organized by the state government, was graced by prominent figures, including Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, a former minister of budget and national planning, and Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the immediate past governor of the state.

Addressing a diverse audience, Governor Eno expressed his commitment to achieving global best democratic practices in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasized that the ARISE Agenda and its economic blueprints have been holistically crafted to address the challenges faced by the state while fostering sustainable development.

Furthermore, he expressed his support for the creative industry in Akwa Ibom State.

He called on local entertainers to form an umbrella body under the auspices of the "Akwa Ibom Creative Association". The Governor pledged to pay a premium to the development of local content, recognizing the significant contributions of the creative sector to the state's cultural identity and economic potential.

The Governor urged all stakeholders to unite and work together in a concerted effort to achieve the effective actualization of the ARISE Agenda. He emphasized that the success of the agenda relied on the collective contributions and dedication of the people of Akwa Ibom State.

In her opening remarks, the Deputy Governor of the State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi appreciated the Governor for standing out to prove he is a great leader sent by God to usher in a paradigm shift in the governance landscape of the State.

Senator Eyakenyi said Governor Eno has availed Akwa Ibom people with the ARISE Agenda as a guiding principle, especially, key stakeholders on their path towards contributing to the success of the present administration.

Disclosing the key component of The ARISE Agenda, Mrs Uduakobong Inam, the Economic Adviser to the Governor said the initiative is a conceptualised comprehensive framework, anchored on five key pillars, to build upon the achievements of previous administrations and take the state to new heights.

According to Mrs Inam, the primary focus areas include Agricultural Revolution, Rural Development, Infrastructure Maintenance and Advancement, Security Management, and Educational Advancement.

She said through these core pillars, the government seeks to bolster existing economic efforts while fostering a more vibrant, inclusive, diversified, and highly industrialized economy for Akwa Ibom.

This is to be carried out under a group; Akwa Ibom Media Network, headed by a certain Ifiok.

At the meeting, OBA, Ephraim Inyang-Eyen and Sunny Ibout according to our source, who attended the meeting said OBA and his henchmen spoke of their frustrations in not getting the public to support the ambition of the Senator.

They expressed disappointment in the manner Pastor Umo Eno has gained more support, especially in the media and in the court of public opinion and decided that a full- throttle campaign of blackmail and falsehood must be launched against the Governor and Pastor Umo Eno.

“In the next few days, you will see a rash of very laughable and ludicrous blackmail- tinged articles on the social media. It is sad that they would go this low,” the source added.

REP EMMANUEL UKPONG-UDO STAGES FIFTH EMPOWERMENT AND CONSTITUENCY BRIEFING

In fulfillment of his campaign promise of regularly interfacing with his constituents, the member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep Emmanuel Ukpong-udo today staged the fifth phase of Empowerment during a Constituency Briefing. The event which took place at the Methodist Central School, Ikot Odu Ndiya in Ikono LGA had in attendance the political class, the traditional institutional, the clergy, party faithful, women and youth groups as well as teeming supporters of the Federal Lawmaker.

Setting the tone for the event, the Chairman of the Occasion, and head of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Service Commission, Barr. Goddy Umoh, said this was the first time an empowerment of this magnitude was held in the annals of Ikono/Ini. He stressed that on the basis of his superior performance, Rep Ukpong-udo was deserving of a second term in office. He commended Ukpong-udo for his gargantuan strides in 32 months, reiterating that he had made the constituency, the party and the the State at large very proud.

In his address, Rep Emmanuel Ukpong-udo thanked Ikono/Ini people for their support as far, stating that the event was a grassroot and localised event occasioned by the need to render an account of his stewardship to the people. He reiterated that he was committed to ensuring that a life touching project is situated in every ward in the constituency before his first term elapses. The lawmaker admonished the beneficiaries of the empowerment items to make maximal use of them while suing for patience from those yet to benefit. He disclosed that a bigger empowerment event was billed for the fourth and last quarter of the year.

Several goodwill messages poured in for Rep Ukpong-udo from well meaning stakeholders and constituents. CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19) HEALTH PROTECTION REGULATIONS 2021

In the exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Section 4 of the Quarantine Act, Cap. Q2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2010 and all other powers enabling me in that behalf; and in consideration of the urgent need to protect the health and wellbeing of Nigerians in the face of the widespread and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria, I, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hereby make the following Regulations –

PART 1

Restrictions on Gatherings

1. At all gatherings, a physical distance of at least two metres shall be maintained at all times between persons.

2. Notwithstanding the provision of Regulation 1, no gathering of more than 50 persons shall hold in an enclosed space, except for religious purposes, in which case the gathering shall not exceed 50% capacity of the space.

3. All persons in public gatherings, whether in enclosed or open spaces, shall adhere to the provisions of Part 2 of these Regulations.

4. The provisions of these Regulations may be varied by Guidelines and Protocols as may be issued, from time to time, by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 on the recommendation of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

PART 2

Operations of Public Places

Markets (including open markets), Malls, Supermarkets, Shops, Restaurants, Hotels, Event Centres, Gardens, Leisure Parks, Recreation Centres, Motor Parks, Fitness Centres, etc.

5. No person shall be allowed within the premises of a market, mall, supermarket, shop, restaurants, hotels, event centres, gardens, leisure parks, recreation centres, motor parks, fitness centre or any other similar establishment (hereinafter collectively referred to as “establishments”) except:

a. he is wearing a face covering that covers the nose and mouth;

b. he washes his hands or cleaned the hands using hand sanitiser approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC); and

c. his body temperature has been checked. Any person found to have a body temperature above 38 degrees Celsius shall be denied entry and advised to immediately seek medical attention.

6. Every establishment occupier shall make provision for regular hand hygiene for any person coming into the premises during opening hours. This includes a handwashing station with soap and running water, or hand sanitiser approved by NAFDAC.

7. Each establishment occupier is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting his premises.

8. It is the responsibility of the occupier of the establishment to:

a. Enforce the proper use of face covering;

b. Make provision for safe hygiene facilities;

c. Enforce provision of temperature checks prior to entry into the establishment;

d. Enforce provisions and use of face covering within the establishment;

e. Ensure that their customers queue up and are attended to serially while complying with physical distancing measures and avoiding overcrowding; and

f. Generally, ensure compliance with the provisions of these Regulations.

9. Occupiers of establishments are liable for any observed non-compliance by any persons within the premises.

Places of Worship

10. All worshippers and users of places of worship shall comply with the provisions of Parts 1 and 2 of these Regulations.

11. Worshippers shall, where and whenever possible, avoid sharing worship items such as mats, bottles, hymnals, etc.

12. It is the responsibility of the person in charge of a place of worship to ensure compliance with the provisions of these Regulations within the worship centre.

Workplace and Schools

13. All persons entering the premises of a workplace or school shall comply with the provisions of Parts 1 and 2 of these Regulations.

14. It is the responsibility of the person in charge of a workplace or a school to ensure compliance with the provisions of these Regulations within the office or school premises.

Banks

15. All employees, customers and visitors of banks shall comply with the provisions of Parts 1 and 2 of these Regulations.

16. All banks shall comply with the guidelines, mode and scope of operations issued by the Central Bank and Federal Ministry of Finance as it relates to the COVID-19 response.

17. All banks shall develop a schedule for regular cleaning of buttons and surfaces of Mantrap Entrance Doors, ATM machines and other commonly used areas.

Public Transportation Vehicles

18. All operators and passengers of public transportation vehicles (hereinafter referred to as “operators”) shall comply with the provisions of Part 2 of these Regulations.

19. Operators shall ensure adequate spacing in between passengers.

20. Operators shall ensure frequent cleaning and disinfection of parts of the vehicle frequently handled by passengers and drivers such as doors and window handles/buttons, steering wheels and dashboards.

21. Operators shall encourage passengers to frequently perform hand hygiene.

22. All operators of trains, ships and planes shall have an occupational health and infectious diseases preparedness plan, in case an employee or traveller becomes unwell in the course of a journey.

23. It is the responsibility of operators to ensure compliance with the provisions of these Regulations in the course of their operations.

Hostels, Boarding Houses and Detention Centres

24. Managers of Hostels, Boarding Houses, Nursing Homes, Correctional Centres, Remand Homes, Holding Cells, Military Detention Facilities, and such centres for care and custody of persons, shall ensure compliance with the provisions of these Regulations.

25. Managers of such facilities shall ensure that suspected cases of Covid-19 are promptly and appropriately separated from others and are reported to medical officers of the State Ministry of Health for necessary action.

PART 3

Mandatory Compliance with Treatment Protocols

26. The health and safety protocols and guidelines are issued by the PTF on Covid-19 on the recommendation of the NCDC and shall be binding on all persons.

27. Persons confirmed to have tested positive to COVID-19 by an NCDC accredited laboratory, may not refuse isolation and or admission to a designated health establishment for management of the disease.

28. All public secondary and tertiary health facilities shall designate a space or holding bay for the initial triage or assessment of suspected persons with COVID-19 in line with the approved protocol for case management.

29. All public secondary and tertiary health facilities shall establish sample collection centres, where test samples from suspected cases can be collected and transmitted to an accredited testing laboratory in the State.

30. Notwithstanding the provision of Regulation 27, where a person confirmed to have tested positive to the COVID-19 is:

a. Asymptomatic or has mild symptoms; and

b. Proves able to make an alternative isolation arrangement that satisfies protocols issued by the NCDC, as certified by a healthcare provider and assessment by a medical professional;

such person may use such alternative arrangements, including supervised “home-based care,” for self-isolation and adhere strictly to the guidelines, until confirmed by the healthcare provider to be no longer at risk of infecting others with the virus.

PART 4

Offences and Penalties

31. Any person who contravenes the provisions of these Regulations commits an offence.

32. Any person who, without reasonable cause, contravenes a direction given under Parts 1 and 2 of these Regulations commits an offence.

33. Any person who, without reasonable cause, obstructs an authorised official from enforcement of these Regulations commits an offence.

34. An offence under these Regulations is punishable, go with Section 5 of the Quarantine Act.

PART 5

Enforcement and Application

35. Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, and other relevant Local Government, State and Federal Government agencies are hereby directed to enforce the provisions of these Regulations.

36. Any officer of the enforcement agencies who fails, neglects, or refuses to enforce the provisions of these Regulations shall be subject to disciplinary action by the disciplinary body of his respective agency.

37. The provisions of these Regulations shall apply throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

38. State Governors may issue Regulations on further steps as may be considered necessary.

PART 6

Interpretation and Citation

39. In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires:

a. “Offence” means any act, which may constitute a violation of the provisions of these Regulations.

b. “Enforcement Agency” means any law enforcement or security agency vested with the statutory power to investigate and prosecute any person in respect of any of the applicable offences.

c. “Face covering” means a covering of any type (other than a face shield) which covers, fully, a person’s nose and mouth.

d. “gathering(s)” means an assembly or meeting of people.

e. “occupier” means any person who is in current occupation and control of premises either as an owner or lessee.

f. “Public transportation vehicle” means bicycle, motorcycle, tricycle, car, taxi, limousine, bus, train, ship, plane, or any other vehicle of transportation that carries more than one person at a time.

g. “reasonable cause” includes medical emergency, wherein the person in violation forgot to put on face covering, but complied with the directive to do so upon prompting; a natural disaster, wherein persons need to be evacuated into a public space; etc.

40. These Regulations shall take effect immediately and remain in effect until otherwise determined.

41. All other Protocols and Guidelines issued by the PTF, NCDC, and or State Governments, except as expressly provided, shall remain in force.

42. These Regulations may be cited as the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) Health Protection Regulations 2021.

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION STEPS INTO ABAK CHAIRMANSHIP CRISIS

..as Chairmanship aspirant, Hon. Patrick C. Iwok, drags AKISIEC, PDP, to court

Hon. Patrick C. Iwok, a Chairmanship Aspirant from Midim Clan, Abak LGA of Akwa Ibom State, had approached the court in suit number: HU/293/2020, praying the court among others, for an ''order for Interlocutory Injunction'' restraining the PDP from recognising and forwarding the name, EKERETTE ETIM INYANG to the State Independent Electoral Commission AKISIEC, for Chairmanship of Abak LGA in the just-concluded Local Government polls, 2020, pending the hearing and just determination of the substantive suit before the court.

To also be considered is an order for Interlocutory Injunction restraining the 3rd defendant (AKISIEC) from accepting and recognising the name of the 1st defendant (Ekerette Etim Inyang) as the nominated candidate of the 2nd defendant (PDP) for the Chairmanship of the said election.

More so, the aggrieved Aspirant, Hon. Patrick Iwok, had also approached the International Human Rights Commission IHRC, to ventilate the collective grievances of MIDIM CLAN, over the sudden irrational, morally and legally indefensible somersault, as it is not only an affront to the supremacy of the Party's Constitution which recognizes the Rotating and Zoning principles, but also an unwarranted assault on the collective intelligence, sensibility and sensitivities of the people of MIDIM CLAN in Abak LGA who have patiently waited for 21 years for their turn.

Hon. Iwok prayed the International body to ensure that Justice is not only seen to be done to himself and his Clan, but also to uphold the sacrosanctity of the party's Constitution.

IHRC AFRICA REGION HQ IS REVIEWING CASES OF INJUSTICE IN POLITIC

The office of H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure, the IHRC Africa Region HQ Director/Ambassador has taken receipt of the final report stating grievances of political exclusion from the IHRC Coordinator/Special Envoy for the Republic of Somalia, Hussein Mohammed Ali. This final report from Somalia is to be reviewed alongside the other reports from Uganda, Mozambique, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Gabon and Burkina Faso.

There are also a few other detailed reports from other African countries not signed by the IHRC Special Envoys. Hussein Mohammed Ali's report from Somalia raised the issue of a community complaining of injustice for the past 4 years in Hirshabelle State. The rer shabelle community have been denied rights of representation in Hirshabelle State Parliament. While the community, is fully settled in Hiiran and Middle Shabelle Regions, it is still denied and have not been considered for parliamentary representation in Hirshabelle State by the authorities in Somalia. The IHRC Somalia presentation including all the other reports from the African countries and their required reviews will be well emphasized within the relevant committees of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Measures for achieving equitable political representations in order to forestall violence among communities must be a priority of the leadership in African Countries. The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) through the Africa Region HQ of the IHRC is reviewing it's 2020 reports on the issues of competition between ethnic groups leading to the formation of militia groups which seek to be in the mold of freedom fighters and threaten the stability of the nations to get the government to ensure inclusive representation for all communities.

To put that assertion into perspective, the Director/Ambassador of the IHRC Africa Region HQ, H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure elaborated that there is an ever-present crazy competition for political representations and it is usually if not equitably considered leads to cries of marginalization of some sections of the polity. Dr. Ahure highlighted that this creates conflicts in the long run and then the protection of innocent civilians in our African countries becomes a huge task and funds are channeled for the humanitarian crisis. It is therefore better to prevent the conflicts by ensuring that the interests are equitably represented within the political system. The IHRC is also aghast at the edging out of the Midim clan in the election for the Chairmanship of the Abak Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State - Nigeria.

The report received on this indicated that against the recognized zoning formula for peace, justice, and equity, the political leaders in Abak went on to allocate the position to a clan that has over time occupied the seat negating that it is the due turn of the Midim clan in line with the acceptable and equitable arrangement put in place for the Chairmanship election. This is an unjust use of might to oppress a people's right of representation.

Wonders are happening in Nachi, a community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, as mysterious healing water, already named “Orimiri Jordan”, (River Jordan), appears in its territory.

The journalists, who visited the community on Tuesday, report that it has indeed become a Pilgrimage Centre, playing host to people from all parts of Nigeria.

Crowds of people arrive at the site just to dip into the river possessing healing power.

The whole story started on November 2011.

Community sources claim that a Fulani herdsman ran to the community and announced how water covered the place just few minutes after he passed.

“He told us that he passed that place with his herd of cattle and soon after, heard a strange noise; when he turned back, he discovered that a big stream has appeared at the same place he just passed with his cattle.”

The traditional ruler of Nachi community, His Royal Highness, Igwe F.O Onuigbo, Obi II of Nachi, told told the journalists that the mystery River was older than him.

Onuigbo said that in 1940s there was no water at that place, only white sand, but if one wanted to drink, one could scratch the surface of the land – and water would fill one’s hand immediately. Interestingly, commenting on what is all used to be like in the past, he added, that no water would come out for evil people.

Some people say that there used to be a small stream before, but later it disappeared. Still nobody claims to have been aware of the river healing power.

A lot of people gather at the place to test the water in action.

Mr. Daniel, the Okada operator, disclosed that he abandoned his vulcanizing job to benefit from the new business.

He says, “I have a vulcanizing shop at the Nachi Market, but when this new business came, I had to close the shop temporarily so that I can also make money here. I hardly make N1000 a day there in my shop, but since I joined this Okada transport to the Enugu Jordan River, I make no less than N10, 000 every day. One of my friends called my attention to it, and I will forever be grateful to him.”

Healing Powers

Although no instant miracle was recorded throughout the one-hour duration our correspondent spent at the river, sources disclosed that many visitors had testified to all forms of miracles after visiting the place.

People of all ages, with all forms of ailments are being assisted by their relatives and friends to dip themselves into the river.

One man said,

“I heard about people who had difficulties in walking but they got healed after visiting this place; I also heard of people who regained their sight after visiting this place; I am just coming out from the River and I believed that I am free of any form of sickness and challenges”.

Currently hundreds of excited Nigerians are seeking for miraculous solutions to their problems has continued to surge into the River.

Even security agents are not left behind as some of them were seen either with their water cans or aiding their loved ones into the River.

However, the water is expected to also dry up any time in the same mysterious way as it came.

More than 600,000 who die annually from tobacco related diseases are non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke. The world’s leading preventable cause of death claiming the lives of 6 million people each is tobacco use which is a slow, but more often than not, sure killer.

Several efforts have been made since 2012 in this current administration particularly by the President to get a Tobacco Control bill passed.

Most significant is the setup of a three-man ministerial team led by the Hon. Minister of Health and charged with the task of drafting an executive bill.

However, despite public utterances in May & July 2013 both by the President and the Hon. Minister of
Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu assuring on the importance of making Nigeria smoke-free and reducing the smoking prevalence in the country, there is still no law to this effect.

Tobacco Control Nigeria is a policy change and public health campaign project using Social Media to advance tobacco control and support the passage of a comprehensive domestic Tobacco Control (TC) law compliant with the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
(FCTC), to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Uniuyo Crisis: Engineering Students to Pay N10,000; others N7,500

The University of Uyo Governing Council, at its 61st Meeting of September 25, and 26th, 2013 received and considered the report of the Investigation Panel constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of students’ disturbance of June 12, 2013.

The Council directed as follows:
(i) that all students of the University must sign forms of undertaking to be of good behavior before the date of resumption which will be announced in due course. The form of undertaking which must be cosigned by a guarantor can be accessed on the University website www.uniuyo.edu.ng;
(ii) in addition to the above, all Engineering students are required to pay a surcharge of N10,000.00 each while others with the exception of Pre-degree, Sandwich, Part-Time and Post- Graduate students are to pay N7,500.00 each

The city of uyo will stand on still Monday December 9, 2013 as 51 music acts, comedians, actors, dance acts and on air personalities come together to honour His Excellency Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio with a birthday concert as he turns 51.

Speaking with news men, Mr Asteroid Bassey, presenter of Muzik Alive on AKBC TV, who is also the event co-coordinator, revealed that the concert was the entertainment's industry's way of appreciating Gov. Akpabio for uncommonly transforming Akwa Ibom State.

He called for participation and support from all well meaning citizens of the state as well as friends, associates and fans of the amiable Governor.

Slated for Sheer Grace Arena, the 51 artistes for Godswill Akpabio @51 concert will be graced by multiple award winning acts Davido and Kcee of Skelewu and Limpopo fame alongside other renown world class acts.

Mr Bassey also added that the concert will be free for all as there will be no gate takings.

The Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba is expected as the Guest Speaker at the 18th Obong Sampson Udo Etuk lecture series and Excellence Awards of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio billed to hold on Saturday December 7th, 2013 at the International Secretariat and Community Center of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Udo Udoma House along Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.

A release signed by the Chairman, Central Planning Committee of the event, Akparawa James Edet indicates that the theme for this year’s colloquium is ‘’Cultural Pluralism and Federalism: Imperatives for Ethnic Cooperation and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria’’.

The release further stated that the State Governor, His Excellency Sir (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio, will be Special Guest of Honour while the Chairman Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang will be Chairman of the lecture session from 11am to 3pm with the former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzo Kalu built to Chair the Excellence Awards and Gala Night at 7pm.

Also expected at the event are, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who will both double as Special Guest of Honour and will both receive excellence awards for leadership.

The Wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio is to be honoured by the Mboho with an Excellence Award for Philanthropy and Community Service at the event.

The event will also have the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Noble Lady (Barr.) Valerie Ebe, herself a member of Mboho as the Mother of the day.

According to the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Akparawa James Edet, the award for the Governor’s Wife is in recognition of the succour she has given to widows, orphans and other honourable causes/classes of people in the society.

Accordingly, the Mboho has invited Government and political leaders, captains of industry, members of the academic community, civil liberty organizations and other pressure groups as well as the leadership and members of ethnic and socio cultural organizations, youths and women groups, Religious and Traditional fathers and the public to attend the lecture, which will seek to recommend some panacea to the challenges facing Nigeria today.

Meanwhile, Mboho Mkparawa is organizing an essay competition in Ibibio Language on the topic, ‘’Nso ke Ikpi Nam Mbak Usem Nyin Idikpa ke Ederimbot ’’.

The essence of the competition according to Akparawa James Edet is to protect Ibibio language and other positive values of the indigenous culture from extinction.

The Ibibio language essay competition, which is open to all secondary school students in Nigeria and abroad, will hold on Wednesday 27th November, 2013 at the International Secretariat and Community Center of Mboho, Sir Udo Udoma House, along Udo Udoma Avenue in Uyo by noon.
