This vintage cast iron riveter is marked, "F.H. Smith Mfg. Co., Chicago, USA" on one side and "The Universal, Pat'd June 8, 1905" on the other side. The upper business end turns and is marked, "1, 2, 3" and has a mark like a sideways "T." The old tool can be mounted on a bench with screws, the better to put rivets in leather by pushing the handle down. The handle moves smoothly and easily, good for another million rivets.

This vintage Arkham House original art by Joe Wehrle, Jr. was the frontispiece for The Princess of All Lands by Russell Kirk, published in 1978. Joe hand-drew the lettering and taped it to the original which is drawn on one-ply 100% linen rag Strathmore board. The publishers slathered rubber cement on it and affixed the Arkham House logo and title. The red handwriting notations are for the printer. The original is affixed to a heavier piece of chipboard to keep it from wrinkling.

This vintage Arkham House original cover art by Joe Wehrle, Jr. was the cover for The Princess of All Lands by Russell Kirk, published in 1978. Along with the cover are two color overlays for printing in black and white and two colors. The register marks in two corners helped the printer align all three printing plates. All the lettering is hand-drawn, not machine made.

This pivotal issue of Avengers #4 published by Marvel in March, 1964 features the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America after a long hiatus. This is the original comic, not the Golden Record reprint. Gotta love that classic cover by Jack Kirby. Cast of characters includes Captain America, Giant Man, Thor, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner and The Wasp.

Let's talk about the condition. According to the Overstreet Comic Price Guide, a 6.0 Fine (FN) is:
"An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects." (This copy is flat as a freshly ironed hanky, has a very small crease beside Sub-Mariner, and a 1/4" scuff in the foxing near the spine on the back cover.)

"Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed." (There's a longer crease along the back cover edge that may have happened when it was bundled at the news dealer's.)

"Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases." (No wear, two small Marvel chipping bits gone, see minor creases above.)

"Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity." (None.)

"Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing." (This copy has square corners, foxing stains on both sides of front and back cover, age darkening along edges inside covers.)

"Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present." (None.)

"A minor spine roll is allowed." (None.)

"There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break." (None.)

"Staples may show minor discoloration." (None here--staples are on back of comic, shiny and pristine.)

"Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration." (No staple tears, no rust at all, a few shallow score marks at spine beside Captain America's name.)

"Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness." (These pages are exactly like that.)

"Minor interior tears at the margin may be present." (Only read once, no tears.)

"Centerfold may be loose." (Nice and tight.)

This Lovecraft portrait by Joe Wehrle, Jr., done in black Prismacolor pencil on coquille board, is a re-creation of the stipple ink portrait he did for Lava Mountain Records in 1976. It was published on the back cover of the LP "Adaptation of The Haunter of the Dark." He didn't get the original art back from Lava Mountain, so never had the opportunity to sell this portrait.

This is one of about six Lovecraftian drawings he did for the company, some of which never appeared because the records weren't produced. He also did a Lovecraft portrait for Mirage Press, which appeared on the Mark Owings Revised Lovecraft Bibliography in 1973.

This 1973 copy of The Dark Brotherhood Journal #3 was published by George H. Record who started an organization for fans of Weird Tales magazine, Arkham House books and other macabre fiction and called it The Dark Brotherhood. The name came from an Arkham House book of stories and articles by and about H.P. Lovecraft. After producing a number of newsletters and several of these journals, George Record seemed to disappear and the organization was no more. We think these journals were produced in a very limited quantity because we have a membership roster which only listed 116 persons as members, including some famous-name honorary members. This silver color metal belt buckle features an ornate background with affixed red, black and silver Harley-Davidson Motorcycles logo in one corner, and a motorcycle in the other corner. The center has a the monogram letters HWW in red and silver. The back has a hook and loop for a 1 1/4" belt. The loop is marked, "Hook-Fast, Reg. U.S. Pat. Off."

I don't know how the letters are attached or if they can be removed without leaving a mark. If you're a Harley fan whose initials are HWW, this is the buckle for you!

This hefty vintage hand-blown clear glass bottle is etched on the front, "Property of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Of DuBois, PA" and on the bottom, "Bottle Made in Czechoslovakia." The metal topper is marked, "Coca-Cola Bottling Co." It weighs nearly four pounds.

The bottle has small flaws typical in old glass. There's a bubble in the bottom rim and two flaws which may have been bubbles at the surface or else they're small chips. It's hard to tell.

There's about a tablespoon of clear liquid inside. I don't see how to dump it out or how to clean the bottle inside. Maybe you do?

This McCall Printed Pattern 200 from 1942 is for Ladies' & Misses' Ensemble, Jacket, Skirt, Blouse, Slacks & Shorts. This is the crisp style Kate Hepburn wore in so many great old movies. The pattern is so old the number only has three digits, the envelope opens at the bottom, the seam allowance is 1/2" and the instructions are all on a single double-fold sheet. Also the sizes have changed a lot since then. They call this size 16, bust 34. They show a series of snaps to close the skirt, shorts and pants if you don't want a zipper.

It looks like someone made a jacket as those pieces have been cut and refolded along the original creases. The rest are sorted and have a straight pin through the blouse pieces and another through the shorts pieces. One jacket piece has a narrow strip torn off for about 4" along the bottom, but it's easy to see where the cut line goes.

The back of the pattern suggests there are instructions in English, French and Spanish, but I only see one sheet and it's in English. Here are the other dimensions for size 16:
Bust 34 ins.
Waist 28 ins.
Hip (7" below natural waistline) 37 ins.
Finished jacket length from back of neck 25 ins.
Fin. slacks length from natural waistline 42 ins.
Fin. skirt length from natural waistline 27 1/2 ins.
Width at lower edge of skirt, about 2 yds.
The envelope has minor wear and small tears. The pattern pieces look very good except for the narrow missing smidgen I mentioned above. The instruction sheet has a slit where the four folds meet at the center.

These six vintage sewing patterns were ordered through the mail from newspaper features. Two of the six envelopes are stamped 1971 and 1972. Two are much earlier, the rest later. One has a top and pants plus a dress, the others are all dresses in women's size 12 1/2 or 12.

The third class postage on the oldest pattern was 2 7/8 cents! For comparison, my man has a Captain Marvel club envelope for 3 cents, mailed in 1951. The postage on the newest pattern was 8.4 cents--still vintage!

The patterns from oldest to newest include:
Mary Dunbar sheath dress with V-neck, short sleeves or sleeveless, tie belt, #8122, size 12 1/2, unused

The envelopes are all in bummy condition, but the patterns look great and the instruction sheets have creases and edge bends.

This trio of three-masted sailing ships have wooden hulls and masts, fabric sails, plastic rigging, and either plastic or wooden crow's nests. The Pinta, Sea Witch, and Constitution models measure about fourteen inches long and about twelve inches high. They're small enough to sail across your shelf or mantle.

They are in very good condition except for dust, minor paint chips and such. The stains on the Constitution's gauze sails appear deliberate. The Constitution has guns below decks. The Sea Witch has a figurehead and a lifeboat. The Pinta has wooden crow's nests.

This vintage DC comic Batman #62, Dec. 1950-Jan. 1951 features Catwoman. The cover says, "Catwoman Returns! Batman's Feline Foe in a Daring New Role! Exposing for the First Time 'The Secret Life of the Catwoman!'" The comic looks pretty good now, but you should have seen it before professional artist Joe Wehrle, Jr. restored it. We present pictures of the process. Don't look if you've a tendency to faint at dismemberment. You've been warned.

The trouble with the comic was it had masses of tape at the spine where a lot of the paper was missing. Joe removed the tape, patched the missing places with similar paper stock, and drew and painted in the missing areas of cover art. We don't have the materials and equipment that a professional restoration lab has, but the comic looks mountains better!

He also replaced a small round piece of the text in the last story as you can see in one of the photos. The cover is now tightly stapled onto the comic as it was originally. We're not professional graders, but we would say the present condition is an apparent good.

This huge plastic Mattel toy from 1976 is almost complete with original box. The box says, "Space: 1999 Eagle 1 Spaceship. Over 2 1/2 feet long! With 3 characters from Moon Base Alpha! Mattel No. 9548. For Ages Over 3."

The back of the box lists all the original parts of the set (we note what's missing in parentheses):
2 1/2 ft. Space Vehicle & living quarters with detachable command & engine modules
Plus 3 TV characters from Moon Base Alpha: Commander Koenig, Dr. Russell and Prof. Bergman. (One man is missing. We have Barbara Bain and the upper half of the professor.) Characters are poseable, stand 3" tall, wear space suits with helmets. Set includes labels & complete assembly instructions. (Instructions are gone, all labels have been applied and one has come off.)

One of the four small rockets on the underside is missing. There are yellow stains, apparently from the aging glue. This Selmer Bundy B-flat clarinet comes complete with Bundy case, three reeds, cork grease, ligature, rack and cleaning pad. The serial number is 156655. It's gently used, with parts that connect with a nice snug fit. The bell is marked, "Bundy, Resonite, The Selmer Company, U.S.A." It has a Bundy mouthpiece.

The clarinet has lots of fingerprints as if it's lightly smeared with cork grease and could use a detailed cleaning.

Look what we found between the pages of an old magazine. This vintage Topps trading card bubble gum wrapper features a screened photo image of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and the words, "Raiders of the Lost Ark." It's marked, "TM:© Lucasfilm, Ltd. (LFL) 1981. All Rights Reserved." There's a Bazooka gum ad on one edge, the ingredients list and such on the other. It's nice and flat from years between the pages.

This tissue-thin gum wrapper is in excellent condition with faint marks where it once was folded around the trading card and gum, and has minor stains on the back. The marks on the front show up better in the scan than in real life.

This vintage video camera is a 1962 Bolex 8 mm Video Camera made by Paillard in Switzerland, serial number 948312. The lens was made in France and is a SOM Berthiot Pan-Cinor 8-40mm f/1.9 zoom lens. There is film in the camera. The red-brown leather case was made in England.

I have no idea how to operate it. I'm able to focus the split screen easily. If you want to know if the motor works, tell me what settings to make and what buttons to push.

It appears to be in very good condition. The ASA selector dial is cracked. It has a lens cap, lens hood, but no rubber eye cup. I don't see the hand crank the site mentions and I don't see how to open the spot where it should go.

It in basically very nice condition with excellent gloss. There's a careful cover repair at the coat of the man in the orange hat. No tape was used, just glue and similar paper stock. The lower right corner has a crease.

100 EMBROIDERY FLOSS Assorted Lot, Most New, Plus Cards - eBay (item 310119342979 end time Feb-01-09 20:07:18 PST)

This lot of embroidery floss has 44 assorted colors, plus 10 skeins of black, 12 skeins of white and 32 cards of floss, plus 19 empty cards. They include Beachwood, DN (made in Mexico), Belding Lily and DMC cotton flosses. I haven't done cross stitch in so long, I forgot I had these supplies. Can you use them?

Each skein holds 8.75 or 9 yards of 6-strand cotton embroidery floss. Most of the skeins are unused, some of the cards are lightly used. Three skeins have some sparkle: one skein of 101 black, two skeins of 13 blue. I tossed in a few partially used skeins, so the total is 100. The floss wound onto cards have the color number written on the cards.

This lot of six sequential copies of the British weekly comic Lion were published in January and February, 1965. The front cover is in color, the rest black and white. They are full of adventure strips aimed at boys: Robot Archie, The Hand of Zar, Zip Nolan and many, many others. Several issues have a no-smoking tip from different British sports heroes.

They're 44 years old! They have some foxing and tape repairs where the leading edges were torn during mailing. One issue has bug holes in the bottom margins.
