This 1958 Lone Ranger 40" by 60" poster for Lost City of Gold shows Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger facing us with gun drawn, Jay Silverheels as Tonto on his horse Scout, and assorted scenes and characters from the movie. The poster is marked in the margins, "The Lone Ranger 58-240, Copyright 1958 United Artists Corp., Property of National Screen Service, license for display only in connection with the exhibition of this picture in your theater. The Lone Ranger 58-240." It's printed in color on heavy card stock paper and rolled, not folded.

This Strange Suspense Stories #34 Charlton comic was published in November, 1957. Four of the five stories feature Steve Ditko art. This particular issue is somewhat famous, because one story concerns a ruthless business man, William B. Gaines (same name as EC comics producer). It's listed in near mint at over $500 in our old book, might be more now. This copy isn't near mint, but nice. See details below.

This run of 38 X-Men comics starts with #144 and ends with #190, with 9 issues missing: #146-149, #155, #172, #182, #184 and #188. They were published by Marvel Comics from 1981 to 1985. They're all in fantastic unread condition except for #153 which has a stained top edge and creased bottom right corner.

This science fiction novel Time Enough For Love by Robert A. Heinlein is a Putnam first edition, fourth impression hard cover with original dust jacket in protective vinyl. It was published in 1983. From the dust jacket flaps:

Time Enough For Love is Robert Heinlein's longest novel. It is just as certainly his most ambitious, ranging as it does over twenty-three centuries of history and countless light-years of space. It is a novel set in a time when not only the human population of the galaxy, but the very number of inhabited planets in it can be viewed only in approximations. This vintage Rick O'Shay daily comic art original by Stan Lynde. It was published in 1959 Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, Inc. for publication June 19. Most of Lynde's early strips were destroyed in a fire, so this early original is rare. The three panels each show a scene out on the plains with both Rick and Hipshot in the first panel. There are a few blue pencil notations in the margins and orange stains from rubber cement that attached the Zip-a-Tone shading medium.

This vintage hard cover book Deep Waters was written by William Hope Hodgson, noted for horror stories of the sea. This 1967 Arkham House edition with original dust jacket was limited to 2500 copies. The copy you see here is in excellent shape with a little page edge darkening. The jacket has been in clear plastic since we bought this book new 42 years ago.

This vintage cast iron riveter is marked, "F.H. Smith Mfg. Co., Chicago, USA" on one side and "The Universal, Pat'd June 8, 1905" on the other side. The upper business end turns and is marked, "1, 2, 3" and has a mark like a sideways "T." The old tool can be mounted on a bench with screws, the better to put rivets in leather by pushing the handle down. The handle moves smoothly and easily, good for another million rivets.

This vintage Arkham House original art by Joe Wehrle, Jr. was the frontispiece for The Princess of All Lands by Russell Kirk, published in 1978. Joe hand-drew the lettering and taped it to the original which is drawn on one-ply 100% linen rag Strathmore board. The publishers slathered rubber cement on it and affixed the Arkham House logo and title. The red handwriting notations are for the printer. The original is affixed to a heavier piece of chipboard to keep it from wrinkling.

This vintage Arkham House original cover art by Joe Wehrle, Jr. was the cover for The Princess of All Lands by Russell Kirk, published in 1978. Along with the cover are two color overlays for printing in black and white and two colors. The register marks in two corners helped the printer align all three printing plates. All the lettering is hand-drawn, not machine made.

This pivotal issue of Avengers #4 published by Marvel in March, 1964 features the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America after a long hiatus. This is the original comic, not the Golden Record reprint. Gotta love that classic cover by Jack Kirby. Cast of characters includes Captain America, Giant Man, Thor, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner and The Wasp.

Let's talk about the condition. According to the Overstreet Comic Price Guide, a 6.0 Fine (FN) is:
"An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects." (This copy is flat as a freshly ironed hanky, has a very small crease beside Sub-Mariner, and a 1/4" scuff in the foxing near the spine on the back cover.)

"Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed." (There's a longer crease along the back cover edge that may have happened when it was bundled at the news dealer's.)

"Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases." (No wear, two small Marvel chipping bits gone, see minor creases above.)

"Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity." (None.)

"Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing." (This copy has square corners, foxing stains on both sides of front and back cover, age darkening along edges inside covers.)

"Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present." (None.)

"A minor spine roll is allowed." (None.)

"There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break." (None.)

"Staples may show minor discoloration." (None here--staples are on back of comic, shiny and pristine.)

"Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration." (No staple tears, no rust at all, a few shallow score marks at spine beside Captain America's name.)

"Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness." (These pages are exactly like that.)

"Minor interior tears at the margin may be present." (Only read once, no tears.)

"Centerfold may be loose." (Nice and tight.)

This Lovecraft portrait by Joe Wehrle, Jr., done in black Prismacolor pencil on coquille board, is a re-creation of the stipple ink portrait he did for Lava Mountain Records in 1976. It was published on the back cover of the LP "Adaptation of The Haunter of the Dark." He didn't get the original art back from Lava Mountain, so never had the opportunity to sell this portrait.

This is one of about six Lovecraftian drawings he did for the company, some of which never appeared because the records weren't produced. He also did a Lovecraft portrait for Mirage Press, which appeared on the Mark Owings Revised Lovecraft Bibliography in 1973.

This 1973 copy of The Dark Brotherhood Journal #3 was published by George H. Record who started an organization for fans of Weird Tales magazine, Arkham House books and other macabre fiction and called it The Dark Brotherhood. The name came from an Arkham House book of stories and articles by and about H.P. Lovecraft. After producing a number of newsletters and several of these journals, George Record seemed to disappear and the organization was no more. We think these journals were produced in a very limited quantity because we have a membership roster which only listed 116 persons as members, including some famous-name honorary members. It includes Smith's correspondence with Finlay in 1937 following the death of H.P. Lovecraft. It has great art and photos of Smith with parents and Finlay with his first Weird Tales cover. This silver color metal belt buckle features an ornate background with affixed red, black and silver Harley-Davidson Motorcycles logo in one corner, and a motorcycle in the other corner. The center has a the monogram letters HWW in red and silver. The back has a hook and loop for a 1 1/4" belt. The loop is marked, "Hook-Fast, Reg. U.S. Pat. Off."

I don't know how the letters are attached or if they can be removed without leaving a mark. If you're a Harley fan whose initials are HWW, this is the buckle for you!

This hefty vintage hand-blown clear glass bottle is etched on the front, "Property of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Of DuBois, PA" and on the bottom, "Bottle Made in Czechoslovakia." The metal topper is marked, "Coca-Cola Bottling Co." It weighs nearly four pounds.

The bottle has small flaws typical in old glass. There's a bubble in the bottom rim and two flaws which may have been bubbles at the surface or else they're small chips. It's hard to tell.

There's about a tablespoon of clear liquid inside. I don't see how to dump it out or how to clean the bottle inside. Maybe you do?

This McCall Printed Pattern 200 from 1942 is for Ladies' & Misses' Ensemble, Jacket, Skirt, Blouse, Slacks & Shorts. This is the crisp style Kate Hepburn wore in so many great old movies. The pattern is so old the number only has three digits, the envelope opens at the bottom, the seam allowance is 1/2" and the instructions are all on a single double-fold sheet. Also the sizes have changed a lot since then. They call this size 16, bust 34. They show a series of snaps to close the skirt, shorts and pants if you don't want a zipper.

It looks like someone made a jacket as those pieces have been cut and refolded along the original creases. The rest are sorted and have a straight pin through the blouse pieces and another through the shorts pieces. One jacket piece has a narrow strip torn off for about 4" along the bottom, but it's easy to see where the cut line goes.

The back of the pattern suggests there are instructions in English, French and Spanish, but I only see one sheet and it's in English. Here are the other dimensions for size 16:
Bust 34 ins.
Waist 28 ins.
Hip (7" below natural waistline) 37 ins.
Finished jacket length from back of neck 25 ins.
Fin. slacks length from natural waistline 42 ins.
Fin. skirt length from natural waistline 27 1/2 ins.
Width at lower edge of skirt, about 2 yds.
The envelope has minor wear and small tears. The pattern pieces look very good except for the narrow missing smidgen I mentioned above. The instruction sheet has a slit where the four folds meet at the center.

These six vintage sewing patterns were ordered through the mail from newspaper features. Two of the six envelopes are stamped 1971 and 1972. Two are much earlier, the rest later. One has a top and pants plus a dress, the others are all dresses in women's size 12 1/2 or 12.

The third class postage on the oldest pattern was 2 7/8 cents! For comparison, my man has a Captain Marvel club envelope for 3 cents, mailed in 1951. The postage on the newest pattern was 8.4 cents--still vintage!

The patterns from oldest to newest include:

The envelopes are all in bummy condition, but the patterns look great and the instruction sheets have creases and edge bends.
