DENIM LUXE

You may not know this, but after the age of 19 I started hating jeans. Mostly because around 19, I discovered that once you regularly shaved your legs, dresses were amazing to wear. Oh, the freedom! And also because grown-up jeans that fit grown-up me cost grown-up money. And I would rather wear a plethora of $15 dresses than search the far corners of the world for $85 jeans.

But, luckily for kind-of-grown-up me, these were only $19 from Old Navy and they feel awesome, thanks to 1% spandex. I've never been a fan of the Laguna Beach casual feel of light wash denim or denim with *gasp* holes. I mean, I am from New York, and we're nothing if not fancy. So, naturally, I fancied it up with faux fur, jewels and bright ass orange lipstick. A little casual luxe on a crisp fall day, dahhhhlliing.

AUTUMNAL TRUTHS

Ah, yes, fall is here. Leaves are turning, the temperature is slowly but surely dropping and we're all practically breathing pumpkin spice flavored air. These are all autumnal truths and feel very routine, except for that this year the pumpkin spiced air I'm breathing is in North Carolina and not Georgia. I'm living in a whole new state right now, you guys!

My job has moved me to their newest location in the heart of Charlotte, N.C. and I'm still adjusting. I feel like I'm betraying my northern roots by having two southern cities under my belt, but so far I find Charlotte to be very charming.

Since I have no relations here (my man-friend helped me move, but he'll be gone soon so I'm sad), the highlight of my day is getting dressed and oh my god, that sounds horribly sad. You know, I'm not gonna think too deep on that one before I get all up in my feelings. Let's talk clothes!

This get up was me trying to welcome a crisp fall day, but as the case goes in the good ol' south it was still 80-something degrees. I didn't mind the undesirable temperature because I got a bunch of compliments, including some kind words from the gals at the Kate Spade store, and like, duh I live for compliments. LIVE FOR THEM. I'm a needy millennial. What can I say?

Some quick details: This skirt was $5 from Goodwill and it's amazing. It was a size too big, so I used the bow that was supposed to tied at the side as a belt. Now it looks like a much trendier paper bag skirt. So clever, right? Geniuuussss!

DIY: GLITTER IS ART, OKAY!

I'd love to say that I'm an innovatively crafty DIY-er, but I'm not. I don't spend hours thinking of the next great DIY project. I don't spend hours is Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I can't sew and I can't paint and I'm not jumping to learn how. But, by god, what I can do is throw glitter on things!

Evident by this project, I truly believe that glitter makes all things magical. I just so happened to have a few sheets of this magical paper left over from a crafty display project for my boutique's storefront. Instead of scrapping it (umm, who throws away glitter?!) I kept it and vowed to make some more magic with it.

After a few weeks of doubting that I would actually do something with the paper, an idea finally came to me. What if I make pretty shapes out this paper? And then, what if I put it in a pretty frame?! Framed glitter art! I didn't come up with any clever names for it. Sorry.

I will admit, I messed up on the first try. It was going to be some kind of abstract row of glitter lined up asymmetrically. Just know, it failed. After that disappointment I settled on what I knew: bows and words. And I'd like to think that what I ended with is pretty durn cute.

WHAT'S IN MY PURSE

Finding a purse is no easy task, right ladies? It has to compliment your wardrobe (all of it) and it needs to be functional for your lifestyle, which honestly can change from day to day. But once we find it, oh once we find it, it's heaven. Then you have to decide what you're going to lug in it. All day long, you will be attached to it, and it to you. This is no small decision, or at least for me it wasn't. So, here I present to you "What's In My Purse."

THE PURSE

After hours of searching on eBay, I settled on this baby. It doesn't have a fancy label, but that wasn't number one on my list. You see, I do not judge by the brand of the bag, but by the content of its character and this one had all of the characteristics I was looking for: a fun statement color, a structured shape, gold hardware and the extra strap. One day when I'm a real grown-up, I'll splurge on that great investment purse that'll last for years, but for right now this gem is perfect for me.

THE CONTENTS

Until I dumped all of this out onto my desk, I had no idea how much stuff I really had in my bag. Honestly speaking though, 18-year old Audrey and Audrey now has learned a few things about packing a purse. Most of everything I have serves a real purpose. I don't just throw things in my bag for the hell of it. I have tasks to complete and what I carry reflects that. Gah, I'm such a grown up. See below for proof.

1. Agenda: Up until a week ago, I was drawing a calendar in notebook #3 to plan. It was nonsense, so I went to Target and found the cutest gold-foiled striped agenda and I am a better person for it.

2. Notebook: I use this notebook for a to-do list of everything work related. It keeps tasks separated so I don't get overwhelmed.

3. Spiral Notebook: I used this one as a catch-all, but now it's for my personal to-do lists -- my life separate from work.

4. Pencil Case: To keep my pens from rolling around and getting caught in the crevices of the abyss that is my purse, I went to Forever 21 and got this perfect pouch.

5. Wallet: Girls just wanna have funds, am I right? It's pretty self-explanitory - I keeps my monies here! Shout out to my bestie for this birthday gift!

6. Mints: No one wants to be caught with ghastly dragon breath, so I pop these after lunch. Minty fresh!

7. Lotion: I am not a fan of dry skin or ashiness, so whenever Bath & Body Works has a sale on their mini lotions I stock up and throw one in each of my purses.

8. Coupons: I am no crazy coupon lady, but I hold on to a good deal when I can. Plus, if you have to eat fast-food, Capitan D's is a great alternative to a greasy burger.

9. Tissue: You never know when things'll get messy, so I always keep some kind of napkins or tissue on hand. That, I learned from my momma.

10. Cosmetic Pouch: This Coach wristlet was gift from my boss and while it's too small to use alone, it's a great way to secure my makeup. I always keep make-up basics in case I'm running late and don't get to do my full on face at home. I can finish up on the go with these: mascara, eyeliner/shadow duo and lip-gloss.

11. Book: If I can, I like to put the iPhone down, step away from a glowing screen and read. I keep this with me just in case I get a chance to crack it open. As of now, I only have six more chapters. Go me!

DREAMING IN GRAY

Well, I think that pretty much explains it. I want one, and I'm sort of proud of myself for it. Wanting something so classic and clean makes me feel very grown up. I'm having a hard time finding just the right one (at just the right price *cough* American Apparel why are you asking me to pay $20 for this ), though.

I've fantasized about the outfits I could wear with the heather-gray-shirt-of-my-dreams and this is the closest I could get to making them come to life. This should satiate my desire for one until I can make this happen on my body forreals. And I am determined to make this happen, forreals.

GIRLY

This was the first look that started cooking up in my head, mostly because I already have all of these things in my closet (no top/no purse). The tulle skirt is clearly asking for a Carrie moment and who am I to say no? I like to think that because these shades of pink aren't so Barbie, it still maintains a cool vibe.

CHIC

Maybe it's the gold, or maybe it's the tortoise shell shades (double points for a cat-eye), but this outfit just makes me think "yes, yes dear. I AM that rich." Also, it's summer time and shorts have to be worn at some point in time, so why not a bright, punchy pair with this hypothetical outfit?

COOL
So, if I had to describe my style "cool" or "badass" would not be words I'd use -- which is why I want to try this out. This is the wildcard! If I ever do manage to make this outfit happen, I want you to know that you won't be able to tell me nothin' (because I am cool and above the opinions of others, a la Angelina Jolie).

I think it's safe to start regularly shaving our legs now, isn't it ladies? I mean, as I type this, it is 84° and sunny -- I couldn't feel better.

And I'm on a roll. Yesterday was a pretty good day too, for many reasons, but mostly because it was free ice cream day at Haagen Dazs! And also because, despite a nine-hour back-breaking shift at work, I felt lovely!

Someone tell my why these shoes are not advertised as the best god-damn shoes ever ever ever!? Okay, so these are clearly made in the likeness of Keds classics, but only cost me $6 (and to low cost manufacturing I am eternally grateful). I could buy a pair of these for every day of the week and not feel the emptiness of my wallet.

It is in my nature to be opposed to tennis shoes, probably because it is in my nature to avoid anything slightly athletic (don't make me sweat, please). But I'd seen these styled in a very clean and classic (dare I say, preppy?) way that I'd wanted to try.

With equal parts comfort and classic cool, it turns out that I love it. I didn't feel like a hobo, which is how I normally feel in tennis shoes. I just felt very airy, how a great Spring day should make you feel. And given the opportunity to go all the way and pair it with a swing skirt and, duh, classic stripes, well, I might as well've been playing tennis. Wait, this is what people wear to play tennis right?

My old-fashioned Caribbean mother tried to instill the value of looking like something when you may have nothing (we were in between nothing and something) in me at an early age.

"People don't see how much money you have, they just see you, so look presentable," she would tell a clueless 10 year-old me. Under her watchful eyes, my uniform was always pressed and my shoes were always agleam.

And then I grew up and out and away. And now I have a very lovely couch in my room that is mostly used as a second closet. Now, preparing outfits in advance is a luxury. I have to have the time (or an increased care level that day) for it to happen, and it doesn't often happen.

This means I'm usually found 20 minutes before an occasion scrambling pieces off of my couch, ripping tags off of unworn potentials and swearing at myself. And what you see here is the outcome.

I had a wonderful Sunday off and was summoned by my male companion. I had four hours to get ready, 7/8ths of which went to watching Canadian teen dramas on Netflix (Instant Star, anyone? You, in the back?).

The last 1/8 went to sliding into this. A glorified t-shirt, pretending to be a dress, featuring "I'm-really-cool-can't-you-tell" cut outs, a second skin cardigan and flats --- easy like a (lazy and ill-prepared for) Sunday morning.

A wise man once said, "if you're thinkin' of being my baby, it doesn't matter if you're black or white," but what happens when you're thinking of an outfit? What if you want that outfit to be BOTH black AND white?

And then, what if you're like me and you can't just take black and white alone? What if you want to throw some burgundy/oxblood/wine (or whatever they're calling that color) up in there? These are legitimate concerns regarding this issue.

This black and white monochromatic-ness has evaded me for the longest, mostly because when I was going through my teenage all-black-everything phase I was asked, quite often, if I only wore black because I thought it made me look skinnier.

That old adage had nothing to do with it, though. Black made me feel grown-up and gave me an attitude boost. But I stopped wearing it because of society's rules! And, also because, you know, I really do like being a walking rainbow.

I wore a variation of this outfit in the past week and I felt like Angelina Jolie circa Billy Bob Thornton (let us never forget the tattoo) all day long. Lucky for me, monochrome is a Spring "thing" this year, so my desire to wear black is making a timely comeback.

*Sidenote: I am questioning my internal style clock for its desire to wear black in the middle of one of the sunniest seasons. Why internal style clock? Why?!

Let's be clear about this purse. I appreciate the aesthetic of the Celine Boston tote,but as it stands, I cannot afford one. That said, I don't find it necessary to punish myself by not having a cute purse, dammit. I found a respectable look-a-like. It looks close enough to Celine's to please me, but still is not an exact duplicate, thus, not making it a cheap knock-off. And there we have it. See my "judge me if you dare" face below.

A WALK IN THE GARDEN

It was Spring for about a weekend in Georgia, and accordingly my legs sprouted roses. I've accepted the cyclical arrival of floral patterns, embraced it even.

This go around, neon technicolor floral is everywhere and I can't for the life of me latch onto it. It's like an acid trip met a few blooms and now we have a trend. I.DON'T.GET.IT. I mean, I get it, I just don't feel it. Which is fine, because I don't have to like every hot new thing that pops up. Imagine what our lives (and closets) would be if we did that? Oy vey.

What I am feeling is the softer side of the garden.What caught me were the muted tones, pastels to be accurately trendy, because it would go with a lot of what I already owned. What made me almost turn away were the fact that they were jeans.

You never know how much of a contortionist you are until you have to wiggle into a tight, woman-hugging pair of jeans -- and my goal in life is not to be a contortionist. But one of my goals was to find a great pair of floral jeans, so for the sake of a dream I wiggled to and fro until (hallelujah, thank the god of botany) I found what you see below.

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

It took me three days after taking these pictures to really figure out what to do with them. I'm even having a hard time trying to figure out what to type right now.

So that my brain doesn't explode because of a blog post, I'll just keep it simple (until a later date when I can work through my thoughts and form big girl sentences): look at my outfit, girl! I am fine, fresh, fierce and I got it on lock.

Dressing up for me doesn't stop when the blogging does. I think it's safe for me to add boutique girl to my list of about-me adjectives and because of that wonderful title, dressing up is as routine for me as...well, going to work. I consider that a perk of the job. With all that said, you should know that this was a workday outfit.

Inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year, Emerald, (and the fact that I got this skirt for free ninety-nine from my job) I floated around all day in this ensemble. When I say float, I mean it. The movement of this skirt makes me feel like I'm gliding on water as the magnificent mythical creature I was born to be.

And, I mean, who doesn't want to feel like a magnificent mythical creature?

COUNTY FARE

The county fair's a come to town! I don't have much to be overly excited about these days, so something as down-home as the county fair is the highlight of my life. I was embarassingly giddy.

Being lured in by the flashing lights and a remixed version of Ginuwine's "Pony" (that alone should've warned me), the first ride I went for was something called the Musik Express. I kept sliding around in my seat and imagining that I'd be catapulted out to my death if I didn't hold on to the safety bar for dear life. But it was fun!

After that rattling experience I stuck to the traditional rides: the ferris wheel and the carousel. I look forward to those the most because they carry the classic spirit of the fair. I almost convinced myself that I was at an old carnival swishing around in this vintage-cut swing skirt. It's a go-to of mine, especially when I want to feel like I jumped out of the 50's.What can I say? I have a soft spot for swishy skirts & old-fashioned anything.

BECAUSE I'M HAPPY

I swear I'm a happy person, I swear it. Don't be misled by the chronic bitchface. I was pretty happy here. Happy that I was attempting a post, happy that I was getting to wear my utilitarian jacket and happy that I didn't have to go into work until noon. It's the little things, isn't it?

What I'm not happy about is the fact that fall is less that two weeks away and I am still sweating in even the lightest of jackets.

I am impatiently awaiting cool, yet sunny, 70° weather. I want to make use of all of my cardigans. My tights, scarves and boots are collecting dust. That's 3/4 of my closet that's out of commission because of this southern weather!

In protest of the sun I am retiring all of my summer attire. This is the last I will wear of my shorts and I'm saying goodbye to coral (the color that defined my summer). That'll show you to overstay your welcome, Summer!

THE TALE OF THE TWO RED SKIRTS

Even on my day off from retail, I get thrown back into retail. I'm not complaining though, as today I was able to go to a thrift boutique in Atlanta I'd been wanting to go to for the longest.

I'm so happy someone decided that wearing dead people's clothes was a trend, because it saves me money. It's also a greener alternative to buying new clothes that children in China get paid ¢15/hr. to make using the earth's limited materials. You see kids, thrifting makes you a good person and saves the environment.

Although my initial plan was to stay home and watch Girls illegally, my gal-pal from Ohio told me she was leaving in three weeks and that we had to have some city action before she left. I obliged and to the city we went.

At Sherane's Vintage Closet we were greeted by sweet shopgirls and my new best friend, a fiercely sequined mannequin. Here is where I was faced with the question of which red skirt would be the right red skirt? Today I realized I buy the same thing over and over again. I pick up things that are in the same family all while saying, "I want to try something different!"

My new best friend was in good company, vintage Diane von Furstenberg & more sequins.

So, after a 20 minute debate of which red skirt would be the red skirt, I chose the one with the most color and accepted that I always get what I always get because I know it works.

And then we had muhfreakin' cupcakes at Camicakes! In case you didn't know, the way to a woman's anything is through cupcakes. You want my social security number? Give me a red velvet cupcake and you've got a deal!

21 & SOME CHANGE

Summer is usually a two-month period I like to reserve for changes that can only be made with an increase in time. Some of these self-imposed changes actually get put into effect and some of them sputter out miserably. To witness my sputterings & successes see below.

Success #1: Jasmine (yes, from Aladdin) Hair *see above

The easiest change to accomplish and possibly the most superficial is the change to mah hur. What I refer to as the Princess Jasmine part has always made me look...awkward, but I have mastered it (with the help with extensions). It's just a fun, simple change that makes me look decidedly more "ethnic", as in what race is she again?

Success #2: Grown-Up Store Shopping

The second in my superficial attempts at summer changes is going to stores other than my staple mall haunts (F21and H&M). My boss preaches the J. Crew gospel so I decided to visit despite the non-college-student-budget-friendly prices. I was apprehensive but lucked onto this bracelet which is apparently a popular little gem. The result: A lingering "I'm too fancy for y'all" feeling.

Failure #1: The Dog Days Are Over

You remember when I said I would die if I didn't get a dog? Well, I didn't die and I got a dog. Meet Lulu, my precious dog, or my former precious dog. No, I didn't kill a dog! Geesh. Long story short, I had her for a week and felt incredibly guilty that she stayed at home alone all day. She needed a whole family that would love & entertain her and I was only one pathetic person. I just didn't have the time so I found her a family to give her a whole load of love and then some. I still feel like a pathetic person, though.

Lesson time: Don't get a dog unless it's just as lazy as you are, and chances are it won't be.

Success #3: I Too Can Read, As Well

I'm reading books and such y'all! Nothing terribly scholastic, but all very entertaining. The only downer is that I've been trying to read them all at the same time, so I haven't completed any of them. Although, in my book, five half-read books count for something.

Success # 4/Failure #2: Drinking Is/Isn't Fun After You're 21

The minute I turned 21 I took full advantage of my cash & ID. Now just about every restaurant I go to I order a drink. I swear I'm not an alcoholic (although Karen Walker is my hero), but hot damn, it just feels right to order a pretty drink with dinner. Damn the media and their influence telling me that drinking makes me fancy! I think I need a drink, and you probably do too after all of this.

A LOT OF ORANGE & A LITTLE NEON

Serving up "sit-like-an-Indian" realness! Kindergarten was a great time, wasn't it? Aside from this iconic sitting pose, it was the peak or creativity for many. Crayola was my best friend, but luckily, with this neon resurgence, I can channel crayola creativity once more.

You see, this is a pretty classic prep outfit that everyone has: a button up and navy shorts (high waist if you're nasty). What I have done, with a dose of my crayola creativity is add a lot of little color. Shoes, necklace and belt, all from Fiore Boutique (my job, also where this post was shot), make me feel a little less boring when wearing this.

When all fails, Roy G. Biv your way through summer! Yes, I know neon is not a part of the rainbow, but it should be. Nature...get on that.

DON'T COME FOR ME

Yes gawd, I am alive and have access to a computer and internet. All these facts aside, I haven't blogged in over half of a year. But it's okay, you all couldn't have missed me too much. Right? Right!? What I'm doing here is fishing for you to say that your quality of life was dramatically decreased because you couldn't view photos of me wearing clothes.

Just kidding squirrelfriends! I'm not even going to try to play catch-up because you will fall asleep instantaneously. I've just been busy being a grown-a** woman and such and so forth! You know how that is.

But what you see in front of you in an ensemble that I wore to work today. I currently work at the cutest place in the history of ever, Fiore Boutique, which allows me to be unnecessarily dressy on a day to day basis. And because I am no longer rushing to school in between working, I can blog again. Oh happy day!

What I am posing awkwardly in below is what I call H2TF21 Couture hunty! Head to Toe Forever 21! I know they get a lot of flack as a "fashion" store, but I love it, no matter how much shade it gets. That said, this is a cute outfit. Just cute. Like a litter of fluffy, adorable puppies. Did I mention I'm on the hunt for a puppy? It's consumed my life, I will die within the next month if I do not get one.

In any case, cute is fine and easy to accomplish, but wars aren't started over just cute and I can't wait to start a war.

The season of football in Athens is upon us. UGA kicked their season off and I don't really care, why am I talking about this. The only reason I care is because in the aftermath of all of the Dawg hooplah, I went to visit my friend again. There was nothing but left over paraphernalia from the game, a few stragglers enjoying Sunday brunch, and for the cool kids, froyo. Frozen yogurt, oh yeah.

This is also the season for boots and jackets and all other fall wear. Well, we're almost there but I've already been wearing these Wanted boots like crazy. They sent them to me over the summer and since then they've been burning a hole in my closet. I was anxious to bust em' out. And bust em' out I did. They're not bad to walk in either.
