January 5, 2009 -- The world's tallest building may have started out as the Burj Dubai but was then renamed the Burj Khalifa before debuting yesterday (January 4) to much fanfare. The switch in title is all good, coming about at the 11th-hour to honor Abu Dhabi's leader who bestowed $10 billion to help complete the landmark edifice in the neighboring United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Despite the country's flailing economy, Dubai's new needle-nosed skyscraper should bring plenty of attention and visitor interest to the UAE. This will become even more evident when the Armani hotel debuts at the bottom of this 2,717-foot monster building, hopefully in the near future.

When the designer retreat will open its doors as part of the Burj Khalifa has not been determined, but the hotel is sure to be grand.

And why not?

Nobody designs in such a distinctively attractive way as the Italian fashionista. And no other country can claim a building as tall and majestic as this new symbol for prosperity hopefully making a return to glamorous Dubai, a wonderful place to visit.

December 29, 2009 -- Susan Boyle is in Tokyo today (December 29) to perform on the annual pop reality show called 'Kohaku Uta Gassen'. This trip for the Scottish singing lass to the Land of the Rising Sun is her first --- and a prestigious first at that since Susan Boyle will be singing for perhaps Asia's most popular music program.

The 'Britain’s Got Talent' singer has sold millions of copies of her 'I Dreamed a Dream' Album all over the world, Japan being one of the more popular countries to buy the singing sensation's music. So, since this is Susan Boyle's time to shine, following are some culturally correct tips that may help make the warbler's trip a big success as well as a pleasant experience.

* Whether you are in a business situation or a social setting, be sure to wait for your Japanese counterpart to initiate conversation. Acting this way might mean enduring a long period of silence, which is perfectly acceptable and very much appreciated in Japanese society.

* If you ask a question that should result in a negative answer, you might get a positive one anyway. In my experience, saying "no" is not a very popular way to respond in Japan, so often a person will say "yes" when he or she really means "no." It's confusing but true.

* During a discussion with anyone Japanese, personal questions are often part of the line of questioning. This is not to be taken as rude behavior but rather as a way of expressing keen interest. To deflect any query you consider not for public consumption, simply give a vague response, smiling while you do so.

* Because most menus are not written in English, when dining out it is perfectly acceptable behavior to point at the plastic replica of the dish you wish to order. These very realistic culinary stand- ins will be on prominent display at the restaurant's entrance.

* No matter what you are served and no matter how much you don't want to eat what is in front of you, take a taste. You don't need to consume the entire dish, but if you don't show some willingness your host will likely consider you to be very rude.

* If you are eating noodles, feel free to slurp. Not only is this the polite thing to do, it is encouraged as a way to appreciate better flavor.

* Do not clean your plate to signify you have finished eating. A little food left on the side means you are satiated, whereas the lack of food on your plate means you would like some more.
* If you are drinking, do not drain your glass unless you want another as this is the silent way of asking to be served again. Instead, keep the glass half full even if that means pouring water into the mix to measure up.

* When someone offers you a toast, respond in kind with a toast of your own.

* In many Japanese situations, such as entering someone's home, it is polite to remove your shoes, so be sure to choose your socks carefully. They should always be clean and without holes. To be safe, pack plenty of new pairs when you are planning a trip to Japan.

Travel safe, travel well, travel everywhere: Don't let random acts of terrorism keep us grounded

December 26, 2009 -- BREAKING NEWS: TSA has issued a statement regarding last night's (December 25) terrorism attempt on Northwest Airlines flight 253 (click HERE to read).

As background, just before landing in Detroit with 278 passengers on board, Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, set off an explosive mixture -- reportedly made from powder and liquid -- in an effort to bring down the A330-300 aircraft. Luckily, this terrifying plan failed when Abdulmutallab tried to detonate the device. The alleged terrorist told authorities that he acted on behalf of Al-Quida instruction.

What happened on the NW/Delta aircraft -- originating in Nigeria through Amsterdam and on to Detroit -- is a scary, awful act. As a result, security measures at all airports are being ramped up and much attention is being paid to no-fly lists, no matter what the level assigned to the person being scrutinized.

Meanwhile, like so many others, when learning of the Christmas Day scare, 9/11/2001 immediately came to mind. And like so many others, I felt there was nothing I could do yesterday and there was nothing I could do nine years ago when that horrible terrorism plot brought untoward tragedy.

Steaming and scared, with no way I could help, I did what I do best: I wrote.

I wrote about my personal experience, about how I felt and where I was, and how it affected me (I was on the road when it happened).

I talked to other travelers through my syndicated newspaper column, pleading with them to never stop traveling but to always remember what happened.

So, to take my own advice, I am re-running that column here on Examiner.com. Please give me any feedback as we continue to learn about random acts of terrorism all the time, everywhere, what seems like every day, whether we are at home or on a trip. Thank you.??

?September 13, 2001: Putting business travel out of my mind, I left with my husband and two teenage boys in our Taurus wagon for a road trip to Reno in early September. We played I spy, we sang familiar tunes, we ate lots of junk food and we laughed and bickered about silly things.

Once there, we picked up my Mom and headed straight for the mountains.

Monday night was spent in sheer bliss at a luxury Hyatt resort, surrounded by the Sierra Nevadas and a kind of peacefulness none of us city dwellers can conjure up when we're in the thick of it. Armed with flashlights, the kids walked down to a private beach to look for sea treasures while we the adults reminisced long into the night.

I have not slept so soundly in quite some time, and now I am sure it will be a long time again before I can.

My husband drew me out of a dream and into a nightmare as he made me aware of the horrific happenings in Manhattan the morning of Sept. 11.??Shocked, I snapped on the TV and watched a landmark building I have memorized both from the air and from the ground disintegrate into enormous heaps of crumbled cement and steel.

A die-hard New Yorker who has not had an address there for nearly 20 years, my heart stopped as an address I knew so well was receiving such devastation.

This had to be some sort of movie, a Hollywood tale of destruction. Trying not to watch, but finding it impossible not to, I witnessed replay after replay of passenger jets turned lethal weapons hitting their targets.

When word came that the Pentagon was also prey, and then later that another plane had gone down in Pennsylvania, I an unwilling witness to a succession of incomprehensible crimes that could never be explained.

My computer became my companion as I reached out to my best friend back home, to a dear colleague in New York who works near the Empire State building and to a longtime friend in Washington, D.C.

We compared notes from our vantage points as we worried about each other and all our other loved ones, many of whom we hadn't been able to locate yet.

After an exhausting exchange, we all came to the same conclusion: That this senseless tragedy would not curtail neither our need nor our zest for travel.

In due time it would be business as usual when we would be back in the air, going everywhere for every reason, business and otherwise. We had no doubt that those evil terrorists would neither keep us grounded nor would they ground our spirits - not now, not ever.

December 20, 2009 -- Kultilda Woods, mother of pro golfer Tiger woods, is not happy with her son, according to yesterday's December 19 report from NYDailynews.com.

The elite athlete's Mom lives in Orange County, right across from Tustin Ranch Golf Club, a course Tiger plays when visiting his Mom's gated community.

Speaking of the community, friends and golfers in the Southern California area are supportive of their neighbor Kultilda. Many have addressed the press, reiterating what Tiger's Mom thinks: They are disappointed in the home-town boy.

Meanwhile, Tiger plays Tustin Ranch and so can you. Open to the public, this Ted Robinson-designed, 18-hole, all grass playground for golfers was voted 'The Best Orange County Golf Course 2009' by readers of the newspaper-of-record, the Orange County Register.

A four-star winner of Golf Digest Magazine's 'Places to Play', Tustin Ranch's verdant grounds includes a driving range, pro shop, golf school, and much more.

That said, let's hope we see Tiger Woods out playing Tustin Ranch soon while the pro golfer tries to make amends with his loving Mom Kultilda.

And the accolades continue for this star-packed 3-D film, shot in a slew of celebrated travel locations. Among them are Hawaii's Hamakua Coast, the Kauai rain forest, the Hughes Aircraft plant in El Segundo, and the Down Under city of Wellington, New Zealand.

The extensive 'Avatar' cast includes accomplished actors Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel Moore, Laz Alonso, and Giovanni Ribisi.

'Avatar' opened across the country on December 18.

December 18, 2009 -- The long-awaited 'Avatar' movie bowed today (December 18) in 3-D at the Cinerama Dome after years of anticipation about just what James Cameron spent ten years and $500 million filming.

The awesome, out-of-this-world flick, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver, picked up a bunch of Golden Globe nominations on December 16, signifying that, perhaps, all this time and money was well worth the effort.

Despite the fact that the new film's tagline is "An all new world awaits," James Cameron depended on many now world locations for his memorable movie. Among them are Hawaii's Hamakua Coast, the Kauai rain forest, the Hughes Aircraft plant in El Segundo, and the Down Under city of Wellington, New Zealand.

As for the 3-D aspect, Angelenos are privileged to watch 'Avatar' in three dimension thanks to newly installed XpanD at the high technology-enhanced Cinerama Dome. This is a first for the iconic movie theater, put in place just in time for the blockbuster James Cameron flick -- so see 'Avatar' today in LA in the best possible way.

December 16, 2009 -- Yes, Elvis Presley is in the house -- at the new CityCenter (City Center) Las Vegas. Yesterday (December 16), Priscilla Presley dropped by the glitzy new Nevada complex to launch her late husband's smash Cirque du Soleil tribute show called, appropriately, Viva Elvis (Viva ELVIS).

Taking place in the custom-built, spanking new Elvis Theater at CityCenter's ARIA Resort & Casino -- in the city The King called his second home -- the high octane entertainment is a fushion of dance, acrobatics, and, of course music.

Talk about gobsmacking!

Astounding visuals from this Elvis-worthy extravaganza are sure to leave guests speechless, so I will stop rambling (at least for now) and show you what all this Elvis Presley fuss is all about.

December 14, 2009 -- Young talent Justin Bieber joined fellow singers Usher, Mary J Blige and a host of other artists in Washington, D.C. yesterday (December 13). Their gathering to celebrate Christmas with the First Family took place in the National Museum Building.

Upon arriving in our nation's capital, the 15-year-old Bieber tweeted his excitement for fans, putting up the following on Twitter.com:

'in DC preparing to sing for President OBAMA!! yeah im nervous. if i mess up he might deport me back to Canada. lol'

This golden opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with the President of The United States and the rest of the Obama family was a real thrill for the up-and-coming Canadian singer. Us regular folks may not be offered such a personal visit with our country's top leader any time soon, but we always have the chance to tour the White House (details on this Washington, D.C. travel must by clicking HERE).

Meanwhile, ordinary people like me who can't get into all the nooks and crannies of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but still seek a great view of the White House can do so from The Hay-Adams hotel, situated across the street from where the Obamas live.

As for the special, called 'Christmas in Washington' and taped last night on which Justin Bieber, Mary J. Blige Usher, and many others -- including Michelle and Barack Obama -- performed, the concert airs on TNT December 20 for all to watch. So, stay tuned.

Remembering John Lennon in Liverpool exhibit: Beatles member shot 29 years ago yesterday

December 8, 2009 -- John Lennon, founding member of the Beatles, was shot to death by Mark David Chapman at the entry to his Dakota apartment in New York City 29 years ago yesterday (December 9). Still, heartfelt feelings continue to run high around the world. Yes, sadly, the great musician is gone but not forgotten, especially as experienced in a fine exhibit now showing in Liverpool, England -- John's birthplace.

To see what I mean, when you are in the United Kingdom, do your best to stop by the Beatles Story, situated just off Albert Dock next to the infamous Mersey River.

This ode to John -- as well as Paul, George, and Ringo -- is housed in a modern building where the newest temporary exhibit has been curated by Julian and Cynthia Lennon.

Filled with John's personal possessions and Beatle memorabilia like no other, a recent visit personally introduced me to Lennon's hippie Afghan coat, his memorable Help! cape, and a cool Honda motorcycle John owned. Also on hand were a lot of old photos, some of which are of John when Julian was a baby.

And the coup de gras?

Paul McCartney's handwritten "Hey Jude" recording notes.

December 1, 2009: Once a counseling center for victims of the 9/11 attacks, the Lexington Armory in New York City switched gears tonight (December 1) to became a worldwide runway as Victoria's Secret super models galore. They pranced the venerable venue's hallowed halls while musical acts like Fergie, will.i.am and Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas rocked out. The glitzy show took place last month but, thanks to the magic of television, we were able to take a peek from the small screen this evening on CBS.

Besides being mesmerized by the prize of the evening -- a $3 million harlequin fantasy bra decked out in 2,300 diamonds -- we also caught a glimpse of the historical landmark's many assets.

The vast space started life in 1913 when the whole of the United States was introduced to Modern Art in a seminal exhibition. Then, in 1948, when the roller derby was all the rage, skaters took over, letting the Lexington Armory play host to some 17 matches. During the mid 19th-century, the New York Knicks played basketball on this spot, calling the Lexington Amrory the celebrated basketball team's home court until they moved to Madison Square Garden in 1968.

The cameleon-like building that became a National Historic Landmark in 1966 runs from 25th to 26th strees on Lexington Avenue, hence its name.

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony Dec. 2 in NYC: Expect skating, midtown gridlock

What an amazing sight to see when the holiday season's Rockefeller Center centerpiece, a gigantic Christmas tree, finally flashes on. And what a dismal traffic problem during evening rush hour and beyond that affects this annual holiday event in midtown Manhattan.

The solution: Put something comfortable on your feet because those boots will be made for walking.

Don't expect to find a cab and skip the bus for the subway for this 77th ceremony when the giant Norway spruce (measuring 76 feet tall), comes to life at 7 p.m. sharp (traditionally, serious oglers start arriving in the early afternoon to claim a good viewing spot). The underground will get you as close as possible to this New York City landmark where, when you emerge, you can expect a wildly huge crowd among which to muddle. (Convenient subways stops are either the B/D/F/V to 47-50 Sts/Rockefeller Center or the 6 to 51st/Lexington).

This year, Jane Krakowski ("30 Rock") and Zachary Levi ("Chuck") hold the honor of flipping the switch to light the tree that casts a wonderful hue on the magical off-Fifth Avenue arena. This giant and very fancy pit features the decorated fir as well as the world renowned ice-skating rink.

Gliding around the Rockefeller rink is one of the joys of Christmas no visitor to the Big Apple should leave without trying. And don't worry if you don't take to the ice like Kristi Yamaguchi: Beginners as well as pros are welcomed to skate their stuff on this precious slice of ice.

Yes, 30 Rock rocks and so does the rest of celebrated Rockefeller Center, especially during the holiday season.

Robert Pattinson ditches New Moon and dines at a New York City diner

Soon after the staggering Twilight New Moon numbers started pouring in, Robert Pattinson and pals were spotted at La Esquina restaurant in New York City.

The decadently and rather unexpectantly restored diner draws plenty of attention, even without the presence of New Moon hottie Pattison. A top taqueria, the hipster friendly dining spot gives great eye candy with a goth look -- dripping candalabras, wrought iron gates, and the like in a dungeon style setting.

The stylishly gloomy spot, perfect for a vampire confab, is effected partially because the part of the restaurant where you actually eat is located in the basement. In fact, guests must pass through a rather dowdy kitchen and down a set of stairs to get there.

Speaking of getting there, besides New Moon star Robert Pattinson, other celebrity masticators at La Esquina include George Clooney, Kate Hudson, and Julia Roberts.

Not too shabby.

Neither is the festive food, courtesy food consultant Richard Ampudia of Cafe Habana fame. Included is the expected Mexican fare -- tacos, seviche, and the like -- but done with amazingly high-food-fashion flair.
Fancier fixes are on the carte, most popular of which is the chipotle and guava glazed pork spareribs and served with sweet plantains.

One caveat at La Esquina: This IN spot of the moment is so popular that lines form in the evening even though reservations are required -- and yes, there is a bouncer on hand. No worries: Go for breakfast instead. None of the hassle and all of the fun -- just like going to a Twilight Saga New Moon midweek matinee screening while everyone else is working.

Adam Lambert gets wild in Los Angeles on American Music Awards at Nokia Center

November 22, 2009, Los Angeles, California: Over-the-top entertainer Adam Lambert goes out all as he performs in Los Angeles at the Nokia Center L.A. Live during The American Music Awards (AMAs) broadcast on the ABC television network. Gasps could be hear from the crowd as the American Idol contender took on Tinseltown one more time, this version one for the books.

People from all over the world visited The City of Angels to sit in the audience and cheer for their favorite musical acts at the 37th annual American Music Awards (AMAs). Adam Lambert, for one, didn't disappoint during the closing number.

The former American Idol TV show contestant's preformance was pure showmanship, though some naysayers were shocked by his man-on-man kiss at the end of his flamboyant number at the closing of the show, causing quite a controversy. While the wild choreography raised eyebrows, the number surely entertained, for good or for bad according to the viewer's sensitivies.

Which leads me to wonder:

Given the Britney Spears/Madonna kiss shared during a very memorable MTV Awards show, should this Adam Lambert version be banned? Are we talking double standards here? Only time will tell.

Robert Pattinson hangs up his fangs in New York City while New Moon hits theaters with a vengeance

As movie lines wind around the corner of your favorite theater so fans can see Robert Pattinson and his fang gang on the big screen in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the harried actor stayed away. Instead, he enjoyed some R&R in New York City.

One stop on his low-key Manhattan adventure: Avenue.

Pattinson partied on the downlow with his co-star, Kristen Stewart, at the so-called gastro-lounge (pictured, below), a moniker coined by owner Noah Tepperberg.

His place is THE place in Manhattan to get cozy, listening to tunes while the lights move and strobe and then zone down to mellow late in the evening.

Some say this is a club. I say the bi-level Avenue is more a snazzy conversation pit since, although there is a great DJ, there isn't any dance floor, just a lot of cushy seating.

Food comes by way of bento boxes holding little noshes of waffle frites, Kobe sliders, and pretzel dogs. Cocktails are a bit on the daring side, especially when you order the fruity Belvedere Sex on the Beach, not a common Manhattan drink where Manhattans have been more the style in years past. Then there's the Dom Perignon Bellini, a favorite among regulars.

Reportedly, Pattinson liked the food, drink, and atmosphere at this cherished Chelsea establishment so much so that he stayed there with girlfriend (?) Stewart until 3 a.m. For some of that time, Joan Jett was also on hand, enjoying DJ Mike Nouveau's rock oriented play picks.

One song on the roster: "Common People" by Pulp, a tune to which Pattinson sang along from his seat on the mezzanine, according to Us magazine.

Have you seen The Twilight Saga: New Moon yet? Or, are you going for a second time?

When you do, take a good look at Volterra, resident location for the Robert Pattinson Edward Cullen character and all his blood-sucking buddies when you do.

That's right.

In the Stephenie Meyers's Twight book series, Volterra is the prehistoric town where ancient vampires from the powerful Volturi Royal Coven make their home.

But don't be deceived by the celluloid version. Volturi is a real place: In Italy.

According to The Twilight Saga: New Moon author Stephenie Meyers, who writes on her web site:

I wrote the whole Volturi scene before I'd picked a location for it. For the first time, I was planning to create a fictional city .... I was going to call this place "Volturin," and I knew it needed to be located in Tuscany about an hour or two from Florence—I'd already written the drive from the airport. I'd also already written my descriptions of the plaza and clock tower and Volturi turret. So I pull up a map of Tuscany, trying to decide if Alice should drive north, south, east, or west, and look at that—there is a city named Volterra just about an hour from Florence. So I google image search Volterra, and the very first picture that comes up is the Volterra clock tower. Chills. I called my sister (who'd already read about my fictional Volturin) and told her to go look at Volterra. She freaked, too, because she'd pictured it the same way, too. It was actually a rather creepy moment."

This is the dictionary definition of kismet.

Volterra was the perfect spot. And, like in the Twilight Saga, this Tuscan outpost's history has been long and arduous.

Originally a picturesque place run by the Romans during the 1st century BC, Vulterra became a Bishop's residence during the 5th century, After the 12th century, when the town was deemed an episcopal power, the Florentines took over Volterra. This was horrible for locals, who tried to resist but ultimately lost their foothold. The Florentine republic fell in 1530 and from then on, the powerful Medici family reigned.

On screen in cities everywhere in just two days (November 20), The Twilight Saga: New Moon gang will show off Vancouver like never before.

After all, the vampire movie saw stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Nikki Reed and all the other celluloid bloodsuckers spend plenty of time in the Canadian city while shooting there on location. In New Moon, they studied at David Thompson Secondary School (playing the part of Forks High) and they hung around the Ridge Theater in Kerrisdale.

But when it came to sleeping during the fang gang's Vancouver stay, they did that for real at the swanky Sutton Place Hotel. Besides soaking up the atmosphere in the Burrard Street property's Gerard Lounge, the cult film's cast members also did some unwinding in Sutton Place's Vida Spa. In fact, perhaps, just perhaps, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart -- reportedly romantically attached -- may have enjoyed the latter by indulging in the spa's signature couple's massage. Or not.

Last year, during a 19-day Regent cruise from Auckland to Los Angeles -- by way of Tahiti and the Cook Islands --I went to sleep dreaming about what I was doing: traveling.

But before I drifted off to never never land, I relished the piece of premium chocolate Regent staffers set on my pillow. Then, before I turned off my light, I took the little envelopes that protected these delightful morsels and read what was written there.

Shopping madness in Paris

I was psyched.

My assignment was to research the best hotels and smartest shops in Paris.

What hotel/shopaholic could ask for anything more?

Unfortunately, reality set in not too long after I checked into The Crillion, perhaps Paris's ritziest hotel.

I didn't even wait to unpack; I had my bags sent up to my suite so I would not waste another minute. Within seconds, I was walking to the St. Germain, ready to shop, shop, shop -- all in the interest of research, of course. I checked out each boutique, mentally taking notes about the items that I would buy could I afford to pay for them.

Finally, at Hermes, business was about to become pleasure. I couldn't resist the temptation to buy a gorgeous silk scarf from that famous French company. OK, $300 is a lot to pay for an adornment that ties around your neck -- but how nice it would be to remember Paris every time I wore it and someone admired it.

I lovingly handed my chosen scarf and my gold Visa card to the gleeful saleswoman.

But as she readied my purchase, her smile was suddenly replaced by a scowl. She cut the procedure short. Clutching the Hermes scarf far beyond my reach, she haughtily told me that I had exceeded my credit limit.

I was in shock. Knowing I had a $10,000 limit and rarely used the card, I tried to explain that there must be some mistake. But the saleswoman told me there was no mistake. Turning on her heel, she ignored me as I practically crawled out of the store.

My shopping expedition cut short by sheer embarrassment, I walked back to The Crillion. I had to clear up the matter as soon as possible. Even the sight of my enchanting suite with its marble bath and roaring fireplace could not placate me. A collect call to the States was the only thing on my mind.

That call cleared up my confusion and taught me an important lesson.

It seems that the gold card I used for check-in at the hotel was the same one rejected at the Hermes store. The hotel's policy is to block enough charges to cover double my week's stay -- in this case thousands of dollars -- rendering that credit card useless until I settled with the hotel upon check-out.

To avoid this predicament on future trips, I never leave home without my American Express card (and no preset credit limit) since that way I can use it whenever I check into a hotel, with a second card in reserve for other purchases if need be.

Now all I need is another Paris assignment so I can show up at Hermes for my scarf and the chance to regain a little of the dignity I lost there on my previous visit.

Delving into Dublin, my Irish cultural pursuit

To do Dublin due diligence, take in a typical Irish pub -- someone's local and the place in which a hectic day ends with Irish wit and a bit of beer to wash away lingering worries.

However, if you -- like me -- don't drink daily but want to experience the ambiance and cultural nuances of said Irish pub (translation: rationalize your decision), opt for a Dublin literary tour. These walking excursions lead to establishments once frequented by famous writers like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett. Before entering, accomplished Irish thespians perform short yet perky readings outside each entrance to put you in the mood for that particular drinking den.

Meanwhile, if architecture and art suit, visit The Merrion. This former quartet of Georgian edifices, with their timber sash windows and plain exteriors, has become a fine hotel. But, checking in isn't necessary (though certainly a treat) to get a sense of these now-merged buildings. A seemingly seamless transition from one to the next, each grade one townhouse was carefully restored to effect the original feel of an 18th-century manse.

Next to the rococo plastered lobby, entered by a subtle ramp joining the two rooms and lowering into the next house, is the drawing room. Created by Alice Roden, a local designer and weaver, and done in period colors, Irish fabrics and fine antiques, the lounge effects the look and feel of an exclusive parlor -- but without so much formality that you can't have a good time. So that I did, taking high tea there with friends.

After soaking up my Merrion brew, a glance into the swimming pool, drenched in miles of tiles (photo above), and the hotel's vast 19th- and 20th-century private art collection (one of Ireland's most respected), I strolled around central Dublin. I enjoyed the familiar scenery, thinking that even though I had been to this city many times, like with my hesitance to try the national drink, I had been wary to really delve into Irish life.

So, I did.

And by going through this intense cultural process, I came away with a better understanding of Ireland -- and I had a lot of fun, too.

One way into the groove was by taking a traditional Irish dance class at the Temple Bar Gaelchultur , Dublin's cultural center. I learned from a young hoofer who insisted the most senior in our group (me) try the traditional jig. My performance wasn't magnificent, but I did get through the basic steps.

Another aspect of Ireland that doesn't come in the shape of a building or a monument, but does help immerse you into Irish life, is to learn a bit of Gaelic. I did that too, also at the Temple Bar Gaelchultur by way of a singing lesson from a very patient teacher, ever encouraging despite the fact that our class desecrated traditional Irish songs like nails on a blackboard.

An intrinsically artistic nation, Ireland offers some of its most enjoyable entertainment for free -- or, at the very least, for the cost of a gratuity. This opportunity comes straight from famous Grafton Street. Stop by and listen to a child protégé playing bagpipes or a boy band emulating the Beatles. On this pedestrian-only thoroughfare, buskers are everywhere, trying out acts that run the gamut -- and then some.

Nearby, on any random sidewalk, chalk artists create elaborate works, their masterpieces only to be washed away with the next rain. And so it goes.

New Moon crew catches Germany before opening worldwide November 20, 2009

Robert Pattinson went to Germany with Kristen Stewart. Taylor Lautner (not in vampire mode) went too. So did The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz.

But what did these filmmakers do in Munich except answer questions, sign autographs, and generally get mobbed?

Apparently, not much.

The sought-after, thespians-of-the-moment and their fearless leader stopped by Olympiahalle Muenchen multi-event venue to ramp up the mood for their forthcoming film on November 15. Jet lag was probably part of the program as the Twilight gang finished up their whirlwind European tour that also included London, Paris, and Madrid.

Too bad there wasn't more time on their last stop.

Munich is a glorious German city, with amazing architecture (like like St. Michael's, the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps), a spirited town square/marketpace called Viktualienmarkt, and Europe's best beer gardens (like local fav Schumann's).

But, it was auf wiedersehen to Germany before the Twilight foursome could even get a small bite out of this big city.
