A Family Update

I have decided, in the absence of my husband, to make a post for him. Unfortunately for you all, I am neither smart nor witty so this will be a mere list of all the "new" things happening in our family. For those of you who have not heard, I am pregnant with baby number 4 (or maybe 4 and 5, I have always wanted twins, but I suppose life is crazy enough now already) due in October. Adding to our chaos are Titus and Zoë, our 10 week old Siberian Husky pups. To say they are cute would be an understatement. They are beautiful and quite active. A wonderful addition to our family and we are all loving them. We continue to work on our house. An 1850's New Englander with a lot of potential. To say it is a fixer upper would also be an understatement. We have been blessed in so many ways, I could not begin to list them all. We are so thankful for God's faithfulness.

The Motorcycle

As promised here are a few pictures of my new, to me, 1977 Honda CB550F. I picked it up a few of months ago. I'd never riden a motorcycle before so I got a permit and taught myself how to ride on this thing. After about a month I took the test to get the license and passed! I love it! I love riding it! As you can see I put new handle bars on. There are a few more things I'd like to do to it before I'm done. The first pic was from the ad I bought it through. The other two I took. It's been a long while...

I'm back, at least for a little while. I wanted to show you all the results of my new (to me at least) camera. It's a Maymia RB67 Pro. The negatives or slides it produces are 6cm x 7cm, huge. The color photos you see are scans of my first roll of slide film. The B+W are scans of a negative film. The developer scanned them for me, not the best quality as you can see by all the little flecks on the photos, but good enough to see them. The actual slides and negatives are astounding!

No pictures or videos today, I'm actually going to write something...Crazy I know.
Well, personally I've never really used the NIV translation of the Bible. I've never liked the philosophy used in the translation. Instead of striving to come as close as possible to a "word for word" translation from the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts (such as the ESV, NASB, NKJV, KJV...). The NIV is more of a "thought for thought" translation, or what is called " "Dynamic Equivalent", with the aim at making it easy to read and understand for the modern reader. The translators of the NIV have taken this one step further.
Last night I was driving home from NH listening to Dr. James Dobson the host of Focus on the Family: family.org. He had a guest on the show, Wayne Grudem a Research Professor of Bible and Theology at Phoenix Seminary. Grudem is the author of the new book The TNIV and the Gender-Neutral Bible Controversy. The "TNIV" is the newest translation of the NIV Bible,"Today's New International Version". There is a huge controversy over this new translation. According to Grudem there have been over 3,000 male oriented words replaced with what the TNIV translators call "gender-accurate" words(read "gender-neutral"). The male oriented words father, son, brother, he, him, and his have, in many cases been replaced with more "gender-inclusive" words. For example
Matthew 4:4
ESV: "'Man shall not live by bread alone,...'"
TNIV: "'People do not live on bread alone,...'".
Matthew 4:19
ESV: "'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'"
TNIV: "'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.'".
This is just scary if you ask me. These are the words of Christ. Why are we changing them?
Here are a few more examples
Romans 10:14
ESV: "But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?"
TNIV: "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?"
Acts 7:20
ESV: "'At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God's sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house,...'"
TNIV: "'At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his parents' home.'"
How about this one
Mark 6:4
ESV: "'A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.'"
TNIV: "'Only in their own towns, among their relatives and in their own homes are prophets without honor.'"
There are many more examples at sheperdchurch.org. Not all verses on that website refer to the gender issue, but the majority do.

So what do you all think? Is this taking dynamic equivalence too far? If this is acceptable now, what changes to the Scripture will be accepted in the future? With over 3,000 small changes how is anybody who picks up a copy of the TNIV supposed know what the original text said? Now I know that no translation is perfect, and that no English bible can perfectly translate what the original manuscripts said, but blatantly changing the meaning of words(that you know how to translate) for whatever reason you may have is just wrong. I suggest to all Christians...learn Greek and Hebrew! This is the best way to know what the Bible says. I highly recommend it. I plan on learning as soon as I can. But until I can write my own translation I'll stick with a word for word translation.

A little movie today

This little movie is called Trip to Wal-mart. I made it couple of years ago (when we still had the Wrangler...I miss it.) It's more a movie about Andy, he's the only one in the family that doesn't mind a camera in his face.
It's a bit over 9MB so if you have dial-up you may have to be patient, sorry. The compression makes the video a little choppy and the audio sound like it's in a can. oh well!

This is a series of photos I took of my sisters new (to her) spinning wheel. They were taken in very low light at a high iso. That's why they are so grainy... but I think it adds to the charm. (it seems that my blog is turning into another knitting blog. I will not allow that.)

I hate to do it but I can now only allow approved members to comment on this blog. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this I just can't keep up with all the deleting of comments I've been doing. If you feel any inclination to be a member just shoot me an email(emmaus777@earthlink.net). I don't think it will be too much of a bother since I don't really generate a lot of conversation to begin with.

Also, I plan on trying to post a least one photo per week. Maybe one day I'll get to one photo per day but right know I just don't think that will be practical. I would love to hear any comments, critical or otherwise about my photography. I feel that forcing myself to show people my photography will help me focus a bit more. I'm going up to NH tonight so I'll ry to put my first official "Pic of the Week" up when I get back.
