You will never believe what happened today. It was a bit slack so I was out back on a break. Jenny comes down to me and says there’s a girl in the shop requesting you for a wash and blow dry, I come out front and who is stood there only Imelda! The boss was there at the counter talking to her or I would have refused to do it. So I bring her over, start to wash her hair (took every ounce of strength not to drown her!) and when I am combing out her hair she says all cheery like that me, you, Trudy and her should have a girls night out – that it’s been ‘TOO LONG’. I did actually clock her with the brush at that point and told her when pigs fly!

She had left and all before I realised that she doesn’t know that Trudy has left the country! I thought you were going to tell her? Does Brian even know?

Your father won’t budge on this. He just can’t look at you right now. Maybe with time it will pass, but this time girlie you crossed a line. Did you honestly think that everything would be ok after you stole and moved in with your sister’s, your twin sister’s boyfriend?

Growing up you always where the more silly of you two. I thought you would grow out of it. I thought you would grow up. Maybe I was too soft on you. But right now you have to take responsibility for what you have done. You have destroyed your sister and broken this family apart. I don’t know where we’ll all go from here.

I just hope it’s all been worth it.

Mary Mooney said something to me yesterday and I hope for your sake it’s not true. Once a cheater, always a cheater – if Brian could do it on Trudy he could do it on you.

What did you really expect? Did you really think that Trudy and I would break up, we would move in together and it would all be happy families? Trudy and I where together for 5 years and of course that meant something! If you need to tell yourself that it didn’t, well then delude yourself; but I did love her and she did love me.

Look I’m not proud of the way things happened between us. I knew from the start I should never have allowed anything to happen until I ended things with Trudy, even then it would have been difficult. The whole thing is a big mess; we’re just going to have to weather this storm and hope that at some point things become a little better.

To be honest I didn’t expect it to be this bad, then again I didn’t think. I never thought that your family would take it so badly. But that again I never really factored your family into it. I’m ashamed now. They were always so good to me. If we work hard maybe we can have some sort of relationship with them going forward.

For now we HAVE to keep our heads down and hope for the best. Leave them be for awhile. And no I haven’t spoken to Trudy at all. She emailed me to say she had cancelled the lease on the apartment and that I have until the end of the month to get my things out. She’s arranged for professional cleaners to clean the place up and I’ve agreed to pay the bill. I assume she is back at your parent’s house?

Hey girlies!

I am so sorry I haven’t been in touch! It’s just been a total mad week here! First off, as you can see, I still have my same email address! (With no cap on personal emails here!!)

Aw girls it’s amazing here; from the moment I left it was like stepping into another world. First Class – can you imagine, I travelled First Class! The champagne and all was free! AND you could have fitted a Ryanair plane in the loo!

Danny, remember Danny? I worked with Danny when the delegation was over from New York a couple of weeks ago; anyways Danny met me at the airport, in a LIMO!! I know!! (P.s. I have my own now, well not me own, my own, but like a limo to use, for work of course – but I travel in a limo!!) So Danny takes me to where I’m staying; I live in a hotel! Well in an apartment in a hotel. Danny said that if I would prefer to live in an apartment block that she can sort it out for me in a week or two, but that I’ll probably find this handier as the hours can be long and the hotel can cook and clean for me so I don’t have to worry about that. Which believe me is a GOD SEND, because the job is demanding! Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but it’s pretty much 24/7. I’m Mr. Garmin’s PA!!

It’s be a whirlwind week of learning all about him and what he does and what I do to ensure he does what he supposed to do. The man is so busy, which makes me so busy that I joked to him the other day that I need a PA and he said hire one! I’m interviewing next week – can you believe it, I’m going to have a PA too!

But enough about me, what’s going on over there with you two? Shelia I can’t believe the Doctor still doesn’t know what is wrong with you… have you gotten a second opinion, should I be worried? Are you ok?

When are you going to LA Shelly? And how on earth did that come about? Can you stop off here on your way over or back? If would be so good to see you!!

Before I head I just wanted to say thanks, for all your help and support. I’m trying not to think about it here, I came here for a break from it and its working. It’s almost like that part of my life never existed. I know it’s probably not a smart way of dealing with it, running away, but it’s my way of dealing with it and its working right now. I know I will have to face it at some point but I just can’t, Brian cheating was one thing, but with… well with you know who is just an entirely other thing. I feel betrayed on so many levels I just can’t comprehend it right now.

Don’t worry I’ve been in touch with mum and dad. They’ve been great too and Mark bless him, he’s phoned me every right, his mobile bill will be enormous!

I’m missing you both, but I know I’m in the right place right now.

Kids,

I feel we’re like ships that are passing in the night at the moment I hardly see you both. I was going to make a nice roast for dinner tonight; I thought we could all sit around the table and have a nice family dinner. Well for the four of us at least.

I spoke to Trudy just now, she is training in her new PA, Yolanda I think she said her name was. She sounds black – can I say that in an email? You don’t think Trudy is dating someone do you? Not that that is a bad thing, it’s just she has mentioned this Danny person a lot and I got wondering if maybe a little romance was brewing? Has she said anything to either of you, I know she probably told you to keep it to yourselves, it’s just I’m worried about her. She’s never really lived this far from home before and I can never seem to get a handle on this time difference thing. I woke her up twice last night (well her last night) trying to have a chat. Maybe you could bring me home a clock from the shop Mark and I could set it to New York time, then I’ll know. Better make it a 24 hour one so I don’t get confused. Yes, that’s a good idea, at least then I’ll know what she is at and I’ll feel a little better about her being so far away.

Well I better head to the shops and get the dinner in. It will be ready at 7pm.

You’ll never believe who came into the shop today! Brian!! I actually saw him parked across the road this morning when I was opening up, he must have been there for about two hours before he came in I reckon. Dad was serving someone when he came in and didn’t see him straight away. He looked awful, like he hadn’t slept in days. He walked right up to Dad and asked if he could have a word. Dad looked like he was going to throw a heap of copper piping at in but all of a sudden his face softened and he opened the door to the office.

I half expected Dad to come out a few minutes later brandishing a bloody hatchet or something but after about 20 minutes the door opened, Brian shook dad’s hand and left. Dad hasn’t said a word since. I’m out at training tonight but see if you can find anything out from mum.

It’s ironic really Shelia, when you think about it, if Imelda hadn’t done what she did I wouldn’t be here, or have any of this. The old Trudy, before all this, wouldn’t even have imagined this was all possible. I was so happy to be with Brian, I really thought we would be married within the year. I was even thinking about doing that Photography Course at the community college. I thought I could be a part time photographer while we raised a family.

I’m still so hurt by it all. I thought Brian loved me. I thought I knew him. The sad thing is, and possibly the saddest is that I’m not really surprised that Imelda is the other woman. I know she would never admit it, but she always wanted Brian from the start. Not that I am trying to defend him, but I don’t think he stood a chance once she had decided that she wanted him. Do you get what I am saying? I hope, more for his sake, then hers, that it works out. I really don’t think, if he is the Brian I knew at all, that he realises what he has gotten himself in to and that makes me feel sorry for him.

Being away has allowed me to see a lot of things clearly. Imelda is a spoilt brat. I never saw that before. And I really don’t know how she is because I don’t think mum and dad treated any of us any differently and you, me and Mark turned out just fine. Maybe she was just a bad egg, although, technically, being her identical twin sister wouldn’t that make a bad egg too?

Part of me thinks that now Imelda has gotten what she wants or at least what she thinks she wants she’ll grow tired and kick Brian to the curb. I know some people should say it’s what he deserves, but really he doesn’t, no-one does. I suppose time will time.

I got a similar email too. I don’t know what to think. She seems to be taking it exceptionally well. Very level headed. I’ve been kinda cautious about what I’m saying to her, about relationships – incase this is all just some amazing power she is wielding when writing emails. I’m going to stop off in New York for 2 days on my way back, am so excited to see her, but a little apprehensive too. Things have been going great with Ross! Well as good as a long distance relationship can go. I know I always say I’m in love, but this time I genuinely think it’s the real deal! I really want to tell Trudy but I think it’s too soon after Brian for her. I’ll see how things are when I’m with her.

I think you’re all wise about saying nothing more to her about Imelda and Brian. (It still sounds so wrong, doesn’t it?) She hasn’t asked me a dickie about them and I haven’t mentioned them to her at all. I hear what you are all saying about someone telling her in person, but I really don’t know if I could be the one to tell her that Brian and Imelda are getting married, what do your mum and dad say?

My Valentine's Day Challenge to my husband!

Call me old fashioned but I think Valentine's Day is one for the ladies... were a man should treat her right and really flex his romantic muscles, am I alone? Of course that is all fine and dandy if your man is romantic... or has a romantic bone in his body! Mine does not.

I know I have shared with you before that he injured me before proposing, because {he felt} the evening {of burnt pizza and mindless TV} was too romantic and I would know what was coming. {So he pushed me off the couch into a piece of furniture and amidst my snot filled tears proposed ~ romantic and very attractive I know!}

Last year he just plain forgot about valentines day. Not a card or bunch of flowers insight... I even bought {for him to give to me} my own box of chocolates.

This year, I took matters into my own hands and set him a challenge! With consequences!

This year I have set him the challenge of creating the most romantic day of my life {so far} that will be scored by me and a panel of judges. To keep things fair the panel of judges includes two of my friends and two of his and of course me.

He will be scored out of ten in each of the following {by each of us}:

Originality
Delivery
Effort
Romance
Thoughtfulness

And he must get over 225 to have succeed his challenge.

The forfeit...

Aw, this makes me smile, purely because of the hilarity and evilness of it :)

My hubby, the actor, must get his chest waxed, on St. Patrick's Day, have it recorded andput the recording up on his Actor YouTube channel for 1 calendar year!

To be honest Sis I’ve been thinking something is not right for some time.

Even still I can’t imagine that even Imelda would stoop so low. Is Rachelle sure they are definitely the same earrings? Like aren’t all diamond earrings the same? We’ll need to be really sure before we say anything to Trudy. I know it’s pointless asking this but have you tried talking to Imelda?

Maybe I should invite Brian out for a beer and get the lay of the land. Like if he is going to propose he might say something, you know, man to man. At least then we can be reassured, like if he is going to propose to Trudy he is hardly carrying on behind her back?

Girls,

Brian found the wedding magazine I had bought (I know, it was a moment of weakness!). I came home last night and it was on the bed. He must have come home during the day for a nap because the sheets were all tossed. I’m sure I had it stuffed at the back of the drawer but come to think of it I was reading it last night, it could have just slipped down by the side of the dresser. What should I do??

Like this could be a good thing? He could think; Yes! We’re both on the same page and pop the question soon. Or he could think I’m a little obsessed and it could put him off. I was thinking, if he makes a big (bad) deal out of it I will just say I bought it cause it has a section on Asian Honeymoons and I was thinking we could head to Asia on our holidays this year? It’s not entirely true I want to go to South America but Asia would be nice too. What do yas think? You’ve both been awful quiet since the housewarming, everything ok?

What a 24 hours! After you left Trudy’s last night Mark arrived with Mum and Dad. Dad was in the van with him when we called and was on the phone to Mum before Mark could stop him – loudspeaker has its disadvantages!

All hell broke loose once they arrived. I was about to call Imelda to tell her what had happened and to say we were all with Trudy incase she got into a fit about not being included and Mark stopped me. He left on a hunch and drove to Imelda’s, Brian answered the door, Mark decked him and broke his nose and Imelda called the Gardai. After 6 hours in a cell they let him go with a caution. Mum of course fainted when she heard Mark had been arrested and hit her head on the coffee table on the way down so she and dad ended up in A&E. She is recovering now at home with 6 stitches and holding court with the neighbours.

I still can’t believe you were right all along.

Trudy is still not talking. I managed to get her to eat something and take a shower but that was about it.

Dad went over to Imelda’s; well I suppose Imelda and Brian’s early this morning. He had to threaten to leave her out of the will before she would let him in. Brian didn’t say much. Dad said he seemed embarrassed. Imelda was her usual self righteous self. She even told Dad that Trudy didn’t deserve Brian, that she had never really wanted him. Dad came home in tears. He doesn’t understand how anyone, let alone twin sisters could end up like this, I can’t believe it either. He told Imelda he is ashamed and embarrassed by her and that she wasn’t welcome in his house. Not that she listened as who do you think turned up on the door about 5 hours later? - Imelda! I had just nipped home to pack a bag, so that I could stay with Trudy, and I opened the door, thinking it was Mrs. Mooney from next door with a barn barck and there she is as bold as brass. Dad charged down the stairs and pushed her back out the door. To the outside world I am sure the whole episode looked quite comical. Me standing their open mouth, Dad rushing forth and Mum tittering on the edge of her chair for a better look, (she nearly up ended her good tea set). Imelda stomped off screaming blue murder and blaming Trudy and Dad slammed the door for good measure. There are several curtains twitching on Coleman Crescent at the moment I can tell you!

As best I can figure out the following happened; mum being mum took it as gospel that Brian was proposing once Trudy had mentioned it. (She had even booked La Villa Rosa for their engagement party for the first Saturday in August!). When Trudy texted mum to say she wouldn’t be calling by, that she couldn’t talk and would phone in the morning, mum took it that the deed had been done and she and Dad opened the champers and started celebrating. When Dad walked into the shop and told Mark that Brian had popped the question, he saw no reason to question it and duly rang me!

What really happened was; Trudy met Brian at the restaurant, all through the meal he was really nice, if a little distant. He ordered all her favourite foods for her and she put his unusual mood down to nerves. She just returned from the loo and desert had been served when he started; ‘Truds I don’t know how to do this, so I am just going to do it like a band aid – real quick. I’m breaking up with you. There is someone else. I’ll be moving out in the morning.’ It took her a few minutes to realise what it was he was saying. THEN he says, ‘I don’t want a scene. I’ve booked you a taxi its outside. The bill is paid.’ And he left. It took me most of the night to get that much out of her.

My heart breaks for her. I’ve arranged a couple of days off for her. I said there had been a death in the family, which believe me, if Dad and Mark had their ways there very possibly would be. I know this is possibly bad but we haven’t told her Imelda is the other woman. We just don’t know how to. She did come by the apartment earlier with Brian to collect his things, thankfully Trudy was asleep, I through them out. I’m taking Trudy home for a couple of days for Brian to clear his things out.

What saddens me the most is that Imelda really doesn’t believe she has done anything wrong or is at fault. I don’t know exactly how long any of this is going on, or what exactly has been going on until now, but really your sister’s, your twin sisters boyfriend of 5 years? I’m just disgusted.

I know, I’m worried about her too, but really, what did you expect? She’s just had her heart crushed and served to her in a very expensive restaurant. What’s worst still is she doesn’t know the half of it. I think we should tell her tonight that Imelda is the other woman. That’s possible going to hit her the hardest and each day we leave it the more she comes to terms with what the bastard has done, I don’t want her to have healed, even a little, only to have to start all over again.

I have a little more of the sordid story. Imelda came to see dad again. She seems more put out that he is not talking to here then what she has done to her sister. He refused to speak to her at first and then said to her that he would consider allowing her back in the house if she was open and honest with him and answered five questions he had. She refused for awhile and they appeared to be at stalemate but Dad didn’t back down. (I think I now know where she gets her stubbornness from.)

Apparently this whole sordid affair has been going on for 8 months; at least that’s when they took it up a notch (her words not mine). Dad didn’t ask her what that meant but knowing Imelda that’s probably when they started sleeping together. Dad seemed to lose his resolve a bit then but pressed on to ask her one more question; did Imelda see marriage for her and Brian in the future. Imelda just laughed. Dad looked crestfallen and left the shop. Imelda ran after him but he ignored her, totally, it was actually surreal. She came back into the shop and asked me what was going on. It took all of my resolve not to deck her too. If I never lay eyes on her again it will be too soon.

Am going to pick up some comedy DVDs on my way home to watch with Trudy, could you sort the nibbles?

Writing The Meaning of Purple Tulips was a life goal and dream of mine. For as long as I can remember, every January I would write on my list of New Years Resolutions: Write a book.

For years I could never figure out why I didn't accomplish it, until one day I realized I would have to actually sit down, open a word document and start typing. I did just that on September 9th 2009.

It took me almost {but not quite} 3 years to finish, edit, rework, cut in half and start again and edit ALOT more, before I actually published The Meaning of Purple Tulips on July 4th 2012.

It was an amazing feeling!

Then when I sold my first copy I didn't think it would get any better.

Of course, then my first review came in and I thought that was the best feeling in the world!

But yesterday, Sunday, February 10th 2013 I received word that I had made it on to my publishing company's best sellers list... ECSTASY!

Thank you, thank you to each and every one of you, who have supported, read, reviewed and shared my book. I couldn't have done it without you all but there are two very special people that really deserve a big thank you.

One is my dear, dear friend Aoife Black, she was the very first person to read my book in its very early stages, she was the one who encouraged me all the way. In fact she is the one who suggested and encouraged me to consider self publishing and sent me article after article on the topic. She is the one I dedicated this book too.

And second, to my darling husband, James, thank you so, so much for reading my book { I would say about 11 times or so} for editing it, for helping me and for being my own personal spelling person. I couldn't have done it without you either.

I wrote this, or started writing this book, about 2 and a half years ago, currently its unfinished, in total there are about 9 Chapters. Because it is so different, I wanted to share it with you all and see what you think.

This is unedited and unfinished.

The story focuses on Trudy Toomey, her family and all their lives, unfolding before you over a series of emails between them all. Those involved in the story have the uncanny ability to jump the gun and get things wrong... like us all...

Or maybe that’s the fact that he is my best mate’s boyfriend! (he he). He really was charming from the start. Remember how Trudy really wasn’t all that interested in him; we all thought she was mad. Even Imelda’s eyes seemed to widen when he came in the room.

I wonder how he’ll do it. I hope it’s romantic. I wonder will he take her away, or do it here. I hope he doesn’t do it in their apartment. I never really liked the place. It just seems so ‘crowded’ or something. Maybe I should give him some hints, what do you think?

Well Girls,

What a hoot! Imelda’s friends ‘en mass’ are definitely ‘interesting’. Where they all for real, or do people actually act like that? Like I know Imelda is ‘unique’ but they just took the biscuit! It took me every ounce of control to keep a straight face half the time. Did Imelda really invite the guy from their post room and then make him serve people? Mark said she actually said to him, ‘Why else did you think you where coming?’

I know she is our sister, and only for the fact that you are her twin Trudy and the spit out of mum’s mouth I would swear that she was a milk man, or a post man job (sorry couldn’t help myself – sides are splitting here!).

You ok now Rachelle? It was a shame you had to leave early; I hope you don’t have what I have. It’s a nasty bug! You really missed a hilarious night! In the end the infamous Beau never made it. His delayed flight turned to a cancelled flight. He did call, a couple of times, a drunk Imelda even put him on loud speaker, he was echoy though and hard to hear him – he sounded Irish though – I think, didn’t he Trud? I actually think that Mark was more upset he didn’t make it than Imelda was! In fact he got so annoyed that his flight was cancelled he demanded to see some photos, it got a bit awkward for awhile until Brian told him to relax. We left shortly after that, too much Imelda is… well… just too much!

I’m worried. Brian is still acting strange! Should I be worried? Obviously I am, but well maybe it’s just a guy thing? What do you think? I can’t get it out of my mind, it’s a niggle that something is different… or changed. Not necessarily a bad niggle. Just a niggle. I asked Shelia what she thought at the weekend (we went to mum’s for Sunday dinner) and she said he was acting normal. Imelda, was of course her helpful self and told me to dump the loser, that if after 5 years he hadn’t produced a ring that I had more to be worried about than just a niggle! (Am still convinced she is adopted).

Fancy heading out on Thursday? Can I come in for a quick blow dry beforehand?

I best head; I’ve been so up in the clouds recently that I’m sure I am going to get fired for not doing any work. That and ever since Ms Marshall got promoted to Head of Housekeeping she has been lording it over me and watching my every move. I’m convinced she is reading my emails.

I found it! The little black box that is. Before you ask, I wasn’t searching like you both suggested I do! I was putting away some winter jumpers at the back of the wardrobe and hit off a box, it tumbled to the floor and out fell a little bag and the box rolled out of it. It rolled under the chest of drawers. I didn’t open it. I thought about. Believe me. I sat on the bed for an age just staring at it. But I couldn’t bring myself to open it. What if it’s awful, like I hate it, what do I do then, I’ll be on edge the entire time wondering when he is going to do it. Can you say to someone, I HATE my engagement ring? Like is that grounds for divorce before you are even married? But then I told myself, calm down, Brian has good taste. Remember that bracelet and that chain he bought me? And ALL the clothes? So I told myself that it will be GORGEOUS, and not to look cause I’ll spoil the surprise! I also found some holiday brochures too… ones for Europe, I think he plans on doing it on a weekend away – how romantic is that!!

Are you sure Imelda was actually talking to a guy? Where the words ‘I love you’ actually used? I can’t imagine her in a relationship longer than a week – in fact has she ever been in a relationship longer than a week?

You’ll never guess who emailed me! Ross! I was so surprised! I knew he was going on to London before heading back home and I had kinda totally forgotten about him, I have even been out for a drink with a guy called Ben, he started working next door. Nice guy, but maybe just a bit too nice for me, anyways, I log in this morning and there it was an email from Ross. He said he had only landed in the door at home and the first thing he did was email me – maybe I am still in love?!

Dear Kids,

This is your mother, I just wanted to say a big Thank You for the wonderful party you and your father threw me! I had such a blast, and while I am not happy that everyone now knows that I’m 55 I am thrilled with the big night and fuss that was made of me.

No I haven’t met him. He never collects her from the house, which I thought was odd, but he is very generous – always sending her flowers. In fact he bought her a lovely pair of diamond earrings there during the week, some sort of anniversary I think she said it was. Oh and they are off to some European city for the weekend, Prague I think – he is taking her for her birthday!

Today I am taking a sick day, well sick afternoon.

I am self-employed and dont think I've taken a proper sick day in over 5 years. You know the type of sick day I am talking about? The type where you switch off, focus on getting better, sleep and watch mindless TV.

For me, the self-employed, a sick day constitutes working in my PJs with a basin/wet facecloth/smothered in vic in the home office not accomplishing anything and getting sicker. Or scenario two: sitting on the couch, laptop beside me, watching TV AND making a list of all I need to do in the house ( now that my eye is off work (momentarily) ). And then I start on the 'house list', cause my 'sick days' are the only time Ill have to do it. ;)

So you see, sick days just arent a 'luxury' I take!

Fastforward until today, or maybe the start of the week. I was excited to get back to work Monday, I have big big plans for 2013 and I wanted to begin. But, to my horror, I woke up sick! I battled on... Achieved nothing (or very little) and so find myself wrapped in a fluffy bathrobe and soft throw on the couch, laptopless (im tying this on my phone), watching mindless TV actually being sick!

(Am sure writing this post, albeit a personal post, probably constitutes work of some description) I am off to 'be sick' now!

Kitchen Renovation: The 'Tiling' Project

We've hated our kitchen since we moved in, seven years ago, but really done nothing with it. Budget strapped but bored we decided that now ( our Christmas break ) is the perfect time to start (what was to be) a small reno project.

We've not had a splashback for sometime and our kitchen has always been colourless and a little souless. Inspired by a conversation with our next door neighbour and her wallpaper splashback and my ever growing stack of magazines, that I cannot throw out, I decided to turn them into 'tiles'.

What do you think?

Of course our new splashback only highlighted the other aspects of the kitchen we hate so our cabinets and countertops will be painted, a trim and under cabinet lights added and our handles will be replaced! AND we're hoping to do all this for €100 (Stay tuned for updates)

Of course I enjoy a good party or night out as much as the next person, but 'partying' cause you have to... its alot of pressure and many say it doesnt live up to their expectations.

Personally its a night I enjoy. There is no magic but there is something almost as exciting in the air... endless possibilities.

How long have you been writing?

To answer this question properly, I feel I have to give you some background about both my personal history and the writing process itself, so please bear with me here.

I was born into a semi-rural family farm in North County Dublin, Ireland. My upbringing was characteristic of the

Ireland

of the time, with a solid and loving family unit that was steeped in the traditional values that were then typical.

One notable element of our family life that I remember to this day was the hard-fought debates every weekend, where no subject was taboo, and as teenagers of course we often took a contrarian view to our parents’ traditional beliefs simply because we were, well, teenagers! I received a good education, and was destined to be a farmer for life, working with my now-deceased Dad on the family farm, mostly growing potatoes (how Irish can you get?!).

But when I was in my early twenties, I had a serious accident on the farm, breaking both legs quite badly (I was less than impressed when a succession of surgeons told me how lucky I was to have survived the fall!). But this was one of my big learning experiences – as I lay for weeks in a hospital bed, in severe pain and fear, I saw patient after patient moving through the orthopaedic ward. And it slowly dawned on me that the surgeons were right – I was lucky! I was alive. I was not paralysed. I would (eventually) be able to walk again.

Lesson #1 – No matter how bad it gets, it could be worse (and probably is, for someone not too far away).
And so I had to quit the manual labour of farming and move to an office job. I set up an IT business with my then wife, and we had a family – three of the most incredible young adults when I look at them today. We eventually sold the business and got 9-5 jobs, and life rolled on relatively uneventfully. Unfortunately, the marriage then ended, and that was another time of pain and hurt for all involved. But as we all struggled to cope with a difficult situation, I slowly learned another lesson, though it may have taken me a long time to hear it clearly.

Lesson #2 – We can survive, no matter how damaged we are. Things can get better. There is always hope.
It was during that difficult time that I began searching for another purpose in my life. I am a parent, which I consider to be one of the highest callings, and that gives me value and fulfilment. I was working in a desk job, which in truth gave me no real satisfaction, being a means to an end (paying the mortgage!), rather than an end in itself. And as I flailed about looking for a new reason for my existence, it came to me like a bolt out of the blue. It wasn’t a gradual dawning; it was that famed “Eureka” moment. I sat in my car in rush hour traffic on the M50 on the way to work one morning in late 2004, wondering “What am I going to do?” And the answer arrived in a single instant, fully formed “I am going to write a book”. The idea was fully formed, but if I’m honest, I was doubtful. What? Write a book? Who, me? How?

Many people feel that they have a book in them, if they could only write. At different events, I have had people beyond measure say to me “That’s amazing, that you wrote a book. I wish I could do that.”.

Lesson #3 – Anyone can write a book. You don’t even have to be very good at spelling or vocabulary or anything like that – those elements can be addressed by a good editor. The essence of any book is its story, and anyone can tell a story. If you want to write a book, I say to you … “Go for it”. Sit down, and whether you handwrite it or type it, just start writing. See what happens. In the hope that it might be of some support and guidance to you, allow me to tell you the story of how I wrote my first story, Laura’s Legacy.

So, I had the Eureka moment in 2004 – I’m going to write a book. In some ways, the process is a complete mystery to me. I know after eight years of writing that to write new material (as opposed to editing something I’ve already written), I need to get away. I don’t need peace and quiet, but I do need to be away from my usual environment, preferably for at least a month each time. I think my mind needs to clear itself of all the humdrum day-to-day trivia of office job, commuting, housework, paying the household bills, etc.

Once I get away, I sit down at my laptop (I have to type, because my handwriting is atrociously bad!) and start typing. I don’t know where the story comes from – once I clear my mind and relax, the story simply arises. When I start typing, depending on what is happening at that point in the story, I might or might not have a vague idea of what is about to happen. Nevertheless, I am regularly surprised by the twists and turns that the story takes, despite being the person writing the story.

And that is why I say if you want to write a book, go for it. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to write, if you don’t know how to start the story. Just sit down, clear your mind and relax, and start writing. If it takes a few false starts, there’s no harm in that. At least you are writing.

So my creative writing was done in blocks, when I could get at least a few weeks away from work and home, usually abroad. That inevitably meant that there were long pauses between writing phases, and Laura’s Legacy took me probably four years to write, although the actual time spent writing was probably closer to four months. When I had it written, I read and re-read it, correcting all the typing mistakes, polishing the wording, fine-tuning the story wherever I felt it was needed. Then I got some close family and friends to proof-read it for me, relying on them for honest feedback. After that, I hired an editor to professionally edit it, and the editing process, in stops and starts, probably took another year or more before I decided that I now had the finished product ready for publication by 2010!

I then sent the manuscript to literary agents in

and the

Some of them sent back very nice letters, saying it was an excellent book and well-written, but that it didn’t quite fit the type of literature that they represented (in other words, they very nicely said “NO”!). The others didn’t reply. And so I decided to publish my masterpiece independently. I engaged Choice Publishing in Drogheda, Ireland, and the book was officially launched in 2010. And I thought the writing and editing and publishing were hard!!!

Lesson #4 - For an independently-published novel, the hard work really begins the day you launch it. I held a series of Regional Launches around

Ireland

and in London, to get media interest and coverage. With the support of family and friends, I got good local coverage, and I have sold (so far) about one thousand copies of Laura’s Legacy, which I’m told is exceptional for an independently-published novel in

Ireland

. But I haven’t given up the day-job just yet!

I started writing Amy’s Amazon in Autumn of 2010, and wrote the bulk of it in three phases over two years, wile on different trips to Spain and Australia. Editing began in Autumn 2012, and has just finished in December. It will go to the publisher in early January 2013, with the Launch date planned for March 2013 J

Who has most influenced or inspired your writing?

I want to truly connect with people through my writing, and I hope that our heroine’s journey will help you on your journey through life. I write to fulfil my personal goal of helping people, with gentle suggestions as to how we might be able to make our own lives happier and more fulfilling, as well as submitting proposals for your consideration on how we can evolve our society to a more just and equitable way of living.

When I decided that I want to write in this vein, I had to take an honest hard look at myself. I’m no guru, no saint. I have made many mistakes, and I’m sure I continue to do so. I am not an expert in philosophy or any of the sciences. And so I wondered, what could possibly give me the right to throw out these ideas on how we might better live our lives? And yet, I believe I have learned a few things during my life thus far in this world. I have suffered, as have most of us, both physically and emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. And as is often the case, I think it is in suffering that we can most clearly see the lessons that life is laying before us, which we can accept or reject as we choose. I think I have largely taken these lessons on board, though I am by means perfect at executing them and putting them into practice!

And so I decided to write in the fictional genre, so that it is hopefully easier for people to peruse these ideas without feeling that there is any preaching going on. I don’t mind if people agree or disagree with the notions presented – for me, the important thing is that we are at least asking ourselves these questions, and considering the alterative answers, which are often unique to each person. It was this desire to write about the important questions of life, combined with the decision to do so in a fictional setting, which led me to Thrillosophy.

I used writer’s privilege to coin this new word, a combination of Thriller and Philosophy. I was surprised to find an entry in Wikipedia for “Philosophical Fiction”, which is defined as “works of fiction in which a significant proportion of the work is devoted to a discussion of the sort of questions normally addressed in discursive philosophy”; but I would be honoured to be counted amongst the literary giants noted in that article as having written Philosophical Fiction; though some of my influences such as Paolo Coelho and Mitch Albom are surprisingly absent from the list.

Other influences on the philosophical side range from people as diverse as Plata and Augustine to Deepak Chopra, The Upanishads, Eckhart Tolle and Oriah Mountain Dreamer. On the thriller side, my single biggest influence was undoubtedly Robert Ludlum, whose books I devoured as a teenager.

What is your most favourite book and why?

It’s so hard to pick a single book! If you had to take a journey from doubt and confusion to find a clearer and better place, I would say these three, in this order:

1.     How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, by DaleCarnegie
2.     The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman VincentPeale
3.     The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle

Stephen Hawking’s more recent works are fascinating, blurring the boundaries between what is and is not possible, pointing to hard scientific evidence that alternative realities and universes may indeed exist!

As a young teenager, I read The Killing Anniversaryby Ian St. James, which taught me that there are always two sides to a story, and even when you disagree with someone’s point of view, you should still seek to understand how they came to that point of view.

On the fantasy side, I always loved The Lord of theRings, long before it was mainstream, and also The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson.

And on the thriller side, again long before it was mooted as a movie, The Bourne Identity was my favourite book by Robert Ludlum, my favourite thriller writer.

What is the worst book you have ever read and why?

I honestly can’t answer this one! I have started some books and not finished them, but I usually assume that’s because I’m not in the right frame of mind for that book at that time. I would hesitate to be overly critical of anyone’s creative work – for example, I sometimes look at paintings that are worth a small fortune, and think to myself that any one of my kids could have done a better job when they were pre-schoolers, so what do I know?

What are you currently working on?

I have just finished the editing of my second book, Amy’s Amazon, due for release in March 2013. In this new book, three years have passed since the end of Laura’s Legacy, and Laura has changed her name to Amy Williams. She has been hiding from her deadly enemy in the Amazon, where she has started to fight to save the rainforest.

corporations descend from trying to frustrate her environmental activism to attempted murder, eventually joining forces with her nemesis in their efforts. Amy and her comrades are in constant danger, being hunted by malevolent forces who will stop at nothing in their attempts to kill her. Amy senses that fighting for the Amazon will cost the life of at least one loved one, and she wrestles with the moral choice of saving the Amazon while risking the lives of other people. Amy’s Amazon is a breakneck page-turner as we race to an uncertain outcome.

As the tension ratchets skywards, the reader considers questions about the true nature of the environment and the possibly unlimited potential of the human being. An alternative view of the natural world and our place in it is considered. There are views on sustainable living that cover the spectrum from the individual to corporations to society as a whole. Readers will (I hope!) find themselves reassessing their view of the environment, and rethinking how they interact with the natural world and with each other.

I am currently doing the cover design, and the book will go to the publisher in early January for a planned Launch date of March 2013.

What is your favourite genre to read and to write?

I read anything and everything, when I can get the time. From old westerns (anyone out there remember J.T. Edson?) to thrillers to drama to fantasy to philosophy to biographies, and on and on it goes. But probably the most constant genre over the past three or four decades has been science fiction. I loved Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke in particular – their stories pushed the boundaries of possibility, mixing fiction with a real understanding of science. Many of their stories also involved challenging moral and / or philosophical choices and decisions for both individuals and societies.

What tips would you give readers when choosing a book?

Pick mine, pick mine!!!!!

But seriously, I think the most important thing is actually to vary your reading. Similar to trying to get your daily news from different sources, I think it is good for our minds and our hearts to read different genres, from fiction to non-fiction. And of course, nothing beats the recommendation of a close friend, as they know us best.

What tip would you give authors when promoting their books?

Get ready for a slog.

A lot is dependant on time, and if you know anyone who has ever worked in the media, they are now your best friend!!! A good website is a must – www.anthonywhelan.ie was my attempt for my first book, but it is currently being rebuilt from scratch, with a full e-commerce solution – I believe this is a must. You have to be able to sell your own book, in paper and electronic format, from your own website.

I think your mindset as you begin has to be that if you break-even financially on the venture, then that is a huge success! Very few authors can make a full-time living from their writing, and even fewer become the J.K. Rowlings of this world. Social Media is a must for spreading the word, and you have to cajole everyone you know to spread the word about your book.

You need to be prepared to put a lot of time into it. Social Media, Blog, media, bookshops – they all need time and attention. Having said all that scary stuff, there are few greater joys in the world as an author than to walk into a bookshop and see your books on the shelf J

In the movie of your {most recent} book who would play your characters? {Please give us the name of the book and the name of the character each actor would play}

I’ll beg to defer this question, as I’m terrible at remembering names of actors. Other than writing do you have any other passions/ hobby's or jobs?

To be honest, not really. Having said that, while I wouldn’t describe them as a hobby or a job, the single most important thing in my life is my kids. I am fortunate to have three children who are a pride and joy, and trying to be as good a father as they deserve is hugely important to me.

What's your dream?

I have many dreams, as do we all. I dream of having a happy, fulfilling life, where I contribute to the world around me and do my little bit to make it a better place. I dream that my three children will continue to grow and develop as they have through their childhood and teenage years – good, responsible, caring and loving people.

But in the context of this Blog, my dream is to be a full-time writer. Not to be wildly successful, that’s irrelevant really. But to be able to write full-time, to be able to dedicate myself in my working life to helping people through my writing, that would be incredible. Tell us something few know about you?

I don’t believe in secrets, so I don’t tend to keep information about myself to myself, so I’m trying to think of something for this section. How about this – when I was in my late teens, I was a terrible driver. I drove far too fast, and was lucky to escape a number of road accidents without serious injury. I am deeply thankful today that my carelessness during those years didn’t have much more tragic consequences – for me but especially for other road users. So please, all drivers – be careful out there!

If you could write a book with any famous author, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Oh, this is a hard one. I don’t think I can pick a single one – it would have to be a collaborative effort.
I would have Robert Ludlum at the table, for his mastery of suspense and intrigue.

Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke would be there for their imagination and their detailed creations of alternative worlds and societies.

Stephen Hawking would be in the science seat, pushing us to consider new possibilities and alternative realities.

The triumvirate of Paolo Coelho, Mitch Albom and Eckhart Tolle would be there for their wisdom and guidance.

And in between endless debates, cups of tea and late nights, we would craft a story filled with wisdom and guidance for individuals and societies alike!

Have you any big writing plans for 2013?

Yep, as you’ll have gathered by now! I plan to launch Amy’s Amazon, and then start working on the last book in the trilogy. It will be called either “Robbie’s Revolution” or “Robbie’s Revelation”, I’m not sure yet – it depends on how the story evolves. It will follow the same character out of the Amazon, into the next phase of her growth and learning. While the first book, Laura’s Legacy, focussed on her personal development and relationship with herself, (with lessons that we can all apply to our own lives); the second book focuses on our relationship with the environment. The third book will complete the picture by looking at our relationships with each other – i.e. society. The first two books mentioned economic and political structures, but the third book will focus much more clearly on these, and on how we organise our modern societies. The same heroine will be central, and I’m excited to start writing the third book as soon as possible, so that I can find out what happens to her next.

What is the best review of your work you've received to date?

I’ll mention two. One reader in Dundalk worked with me for a number of years, and bought the first book, Laura’s Legacy, when I published it. Her feedback was

“"I really enjoyed the book … got a great message out of the book … no point in worrying about the past, no point in worrying about the future, the only thing you can impact is the present, trying my best to live by that, and enjoy life to the full … well done, looking forward to book 2”,

which was really important to me as the whole point of the Thrillosophy books is to entertain whilst also giving readers food for thought – when I feel that people can apply some of these thoughts to their own lives to make a difference in their day-to-day existence, then that is incredible feedback for me.

The other instance was when I was in a pub with friends, and there were people there that I didn’t know. One of the girls started talking about this absolutely incredible book she read, and how she had given it to someone who was in a difficult place at the time, because she felt the book could really help that person. She praised this book with unlimited appreciation, and told us all that we should go our and buy it. When someone asked her for the name of this fantastic book, she said “Laura’s Legacy” – I burst into spontaneous tears, as it was the first time that I had received feedback from someone who didn’t know me before reading the book, and still didn’t know who I was as she talked to me about the book. Pure magic.

Is there anything else you would like to share or tell us?

As I have said above, writing is my dream. But it’s a very crowded marketplace out there, and it’s incredibly difficult to cut through the noise and make a sufficient impression that would allow an author to write as a full-time living. How long have you been writing?

I have been writing my whole life.

It is my creative outlet… some people cook, some draw, and some sing (you don’t want to see me do any of those things)… I write. It’s only been the last couple of years that I have done it with the intent of pursuing this as a career.

Who has most influenced or inspired your writing?

My kids, they remind me of the magic in the world, and the wonder in simple things. They re-teach me some long forgotten lessons, and in reincorporating those in my life, I am inspired to fulfill my dreams and my stories.

What is your most favourite book and why?

There are so many great ones… I have to go way back and say, Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” This is a book that I can and have read over and over to myself, and my kids. It is a book to learn from, to cherish, and to grow with.

What is the worst book you have ever read and why?

Ohhh… that is a toughie. I think I’ll play it safe here and say my college text books.

What is your favourite genre to read and to write?

I love fantasy & fairytales. There’s just something that pulls me to the romance of the princesses, the adventures from the dashing knights, and damsels in distress, the mystery and intrigue of the wizards, and magic.

What tip would you give authors when promoting their books?

Stick with it… keep the momentum going and be realistic with your goals. I am firm believer in consistency creating success.

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing since I figured out how to hold a pencil.

Professionally, I've been writing for less than a year. I've had a few blogs over the years and even wrote for Examiner for a while, but I sat down and wrote my first novel just this past summer. It was published in October.Okay, that's not entirely true. I wrote, by hand, a novel back in my twenties and it was awful. Complete rubbish. So I don't really count that attempt.

Who has most influenced or inspired your writing?

I have an aunt that is a published writer so I would say some of my inspiration comes from her, just that she had the courage to pursue it. As far as influences, I believe for me, it's rather broad. The act of falling in love with a book, feeling connected to the characters, being absorbed in someone else's world, and the intense pleasure that comes from that through the written word is inspirational for me. If I can create that kind of feeling for someone, well... nothing would please me more.

What is your most favourite book and why?

That's a tough one. There have been many over the years that sucked me in.

Can I name a fiction one and a non fiction one?

For non fiction, I'll say Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. Her descriptions were so detailed. In one scene she describes a bean soup she was eating, by the time I was done reading it, I felt I could actually taste that soup.

For fiction, I guess its more historical fiction, The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. It's written as though Cleopatra is telling her own story. Magical.

What is the worst book you have ever read and why?

I usually won't finish a book I don't like, even though I try very much. I also try very hard not to bash other books, just because of author karma. If I don't like it, I don't comment. But in general, what I don't like is an underdeveloped plot, word choices that require a dictionary near by, or ridiculous plot points that require too much suspension of reality. Some fantasy is fine, of course, it's partly why we read, but it can veer towards nonsense at times.

What are you currently working on?

I just finished writing the manuscript for book two in my trilogy. It's sitting now with test readers and then it will be off to editing. I plan to start book three in the spring, and have it published by summer. I have an idea brewing around in my head for a pseudo memoir about getting your mojo back after 40.

What is your favourite genre to read and to write?

I like to read travel essays about Italy. I am borderline obsessed with anything Italian and really love being pulled into a well written account of living there. I write contemporary romance that some have classified as erotic fiction, although that's not how I classify it. Odd that I write that genre but don't regularly read it. I have read some of the more popular romance books recently though, market research, I suppose.

What tips would you give readers when choosing a book?

Be open minded! Many good books out there are not in book stores and don't have big marketing budgets behind them. Listen to what your friends are reading, explore the internet for up and coming authors, and while you may read reviews online, be aware that everyone's opinion is subjective

What tip would you give authors when promoting their books?

Spend time cultivating relationships with your readers and other authors. Join supportive communities, like Master Koda, and get involved. Reciprocate any kindness or promotional efforts others help you with. Tell everyone you meet you are an author and have something with your book info on it to hand out. Be visible in social media but make your interactions meaningful. I chat with readers on my Facebook page almost daily. They've taken the time to come and like the page, I want them to know how much I appreciate them. I'm still learning a lot but promotions and such can be a good way to engage readers too.

In the movie of your {most recent} book who would play your characters? {Please give us the name of the book and the name of the character each actor would play}

The first book in my trilogy is called, Turn Towards the Sun. I think my two main characters, Enzo Milano and Ava Bradshaw, would be cast by currently unknown actors. I've been playing around on my Pinterest page with "casting" my characters so if you really want to see what I have in mind, you can stop by there. I secretly hope that someday these books will be a movie.

Other than writing do you have any other passions/ hobby's or jobs?

I have a day job and of course my dream is to make a full time living being a writer. I have most definitely found my passion in writing and I'm very excited about where it will take me in the future.

What's your dream?

Make enough money writing that I can pay off all my bills, buy a villa in Tuscany, and get invited to be interviewed by someone famous, Barbara Walters or Katie Couric, perhaps. I'm only slightly kidding.

Tell us something few know about you?

I'm a pretty open book but some things that are sort of interesting I guess, are that I speak fluent Italian (my husband is from there), I'm a certified life coach and holistic nutritionist, and I would much rather by books that shoes anyday.

Have you any big writing plans for 2013?

Yep, publish book two in the trilogy, then write and publish book three. By this time next year, I hope to be starting on my pseudo memoir or whatever else strikes my fancy by then.

What is the best review of your work you've received to date?

Many of my readers compare my book to Fifty Shades of Grey in terms of the handsome, controlling billionaire and the sweet, loving woman that sweeps him off his feet, even though the content is quite different.

The best review to me was from Amazon:

"Who needs Christian Grey, when you can have Enzo Milano."

With the massive success and compelling nature of FSoG, the fact that someone put my character up to that level was a huge compliment.

Is there anything else you would like to share or tell us?

Yes, I would just like to say that if you like an author or a book, tell everyone! Share website links, buy the book as gifts, engage with the author, especially independent authors. Everyone might not agree with me on this, but I write, not just for myself, but for the entertainment value of readers. There's nothing more heartwarming than to hear your enthusiasm about a book or character and to know you shared that feeling with your friends and family.

How long have you been writing?

I began writing in elementary school but I've been writing seriously for about 8 years. One day I'll get good at it!

Who has most influenced or inspired your writing?

Without a doubt, the person who's most inspired me is my wife. She is a performer and does it 100% for the love of what she does. She really helps me remember why I do what I do.

What is your most favourite book and why?

That is a tough question. There are so many books I love for so many different reasons, it's tough to pick one. If I have to throw all of them in a hat and pick just one, I'm going to go with "Speaker for the Dead" by Orson Scott Card. It's sci-fi, but the ideas in it are so original and the story is so character-based, it's not what most people would expect science fiction to be.

What is the worst book you have ever read and why?

I can't say I've ever read a worst book, because if it's no good, I don't finish it. There are dents in my walls where I've thrown books against them in displeasure (a habit I'm trying to break now that I have an eReader).

What are you currently working on?

I am editing the second and third books in my Khirro's Journey epic fantasy trilogy (book 2 will be out in Jan.), continuing work on the first draft of my third Icarus Fell urban fantasy (my NaNoWriMo project), planning a stand alone fantasy that is my next book and researching for some erotica I'm going to write under a pen name (researching erotica? Sounds interesting, doesn't it?).

What is your favourite genre to read and to write?

Speculative fiction. I love sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Most of what I've written so far is various sub-genres of fantasy, but there is always a horror element and I see some sci-fi in my future.

What tips would you give readers when choosing a book?

If it's a physical book, don't just look at the cover and read the blurb. Open it, flip through the pages to see what they look like (too many big blocks of words without a break?), read the first page or two, read some pages in the middle. Same with an eBook...read blurbs and browse reviews, but always take the time to read the sample.

What tip would you give authors when promoting their books?

Don't stop. It's tedious and feels like it's taking you away from what you'd rather be doing, but it is necessary. And have a plan, don't just randomly tweet purchase links, put together an actual marketing plan and stick to it.

Other than writing do you have any other passions/ hobby's or jobs?

My wife and I own a production company together, so we spend a bit of time planning and producing shows in our area, plus we're branching off in other areas. My passion outside of writing is my family.

What's your dream?

Probably not much different than other writers: I want enough best selling books and enough money in the bank that I can write without worry. And I'd like to travel, experience other places and cultures so they can become part of my books.

Tell us something few know about you?

I hate green peas.Even the smell of them cooking makes me feel ill.

If you could write a book with any famous author, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Ray Bradbury.

Do I really need to explain it? The man was brilliant. When you can write a sentence that goes on for a page and a half and the reader doesn't even notice it happened, you're pretty good at what you do. I want me some of that...a truly literary genre writer that didn't turn his back on his genre fans.

Have you any big writing plans for 2013?

Publishes many novels. With where I'm currently at, I think getting four more out will be easy, so I'm going to aim for seven novels published in 2013.

What is the best review of your work you've received to date?

I've had a few really good ones, but my favourite line form a review was for my first Icarus Fell novel, On Unfaithful Wings:

"Not just my favourite Kindle book of the year,

but one of my favourite books ever."

I feel gooshy inside every time I read it (at least once a day).

Is there anything else you would like to share or tell us?

I am so thankful to other writers like yourself as well as my amazing readers. Being a self-published, independent author is a lot more work than just writing a novel and it is the support of others that makes the burden easier to bear.

Very excited to share with you this Author Spotlight on fellow Independent Author Cody L. Martin. Cody has been kind enough to answer my quick fire questions and to share some personal and professional insights with us.

Name: Cody L. Martin

How long have you been writing?

Off and on for about sixteen years.

I wrote my first full-length screenplay in high school. After that, I began to write more of them; starting out as fanfics for TV shows I liked, then moving on to original works. About four years ago, I decided to write shorts stories as taking a break from screenplays. When I decided to become an independent author, I turned one of my original screenplays into my first novel. Adventure Hunters is the result.

Who has most influenced or inspired your writing?

Stephen King.

He is the author I read the most and his book On Writing is pretty much my writing Bible. The way he writes characters, using their voice in the POVs, it’s amazing. In a roundabout way, George Lucas and Steve Jobs, since they brought about technology that has let anyone become an author. Also, screenwriter Syd Field and his book Screenplay. I learned about structure and outlining from his book. It’s been invaluable.

What is your most favourite book and why?

That’s a tough one but the the book that sprung to mind first was The Cold Moon by Jeffery Deaver. He’s a master of plot twists and The Watchmaker was such a neat villain.

What are you currently working on?

The Super School Uniform.

In it, a Japanese middle high school students gains an alien suit that gives her superpowers. She must stop an alien race from transforming the Earth into a copy of their homeworld. It’s been harder to write than I expected but I will finish it. I’ve included cultural notes based on my experiences as a junior high assistant English teacher in Japan, I’m hoping the readers will gain a little insight into the school system and culture.

What is your favourite genre to read and to write?

Action and science-fiction.

I actually watch more movies than read, so I try to write novels that would match a movie I’d want to watch. I like these genres because they are such escapisms. When I read or watch a movie, I don’t want to be reminded about how bad the real-world is. I want to get away, away to worlds and characters that are bigger than life.

What tips would you give readers when choosing a book?

With an ebook, download the sample. That’s why they are there. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, especially sci-fi and fantasy. There are some gorgeous covers on bad books. As well as bad covers on good books. Read the first few chapters, skip to a few pages in the middle.

What tip would you give authors when promoting their books?

Get help! Hahaha. I’m not good at promoting, so I’m glad to have a support group like Master Koda on Facebook.

Other than writing do you have any other passions/ hobby's or jobs?

My current job is teaching at an English cram school in Japan. I really like it. As for any other passions, probably music from Hello! Project, an umbrella name for different artists under the same company. Artists include Morning Musume (my all-time favorite singers), Berryz Kobou, and C-ute. Watching movies as well and spending as much time as I can with my wife Yoko (which, sadly, isn’t nearly enough).

What's your dream?

To become a full-time writer. If I could get paid enough to do it all the time, I’d quit my job and write. With each book I’m trying to be better and better.

If you could write a book with any famous author, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

My first impulse was to say Stephen King since he’s my favorite writer, but I’m a huge fan of Jeffery Deaver as well. He’s a master at plots and he outlines and plans his stories, as do I. I think I’d learn a lot about structuring and outlining by working with him.

Have you any big writing plans for 2013?

I’ll just be happy to get my second book published.

What is the best review of your work you've received to date?

None. I don’t have any reviews of Adventure Hunters (hint, hint, to all you reading this post).

Is there anything else you would like to share or tell us?

Support independent authors. (I don’t like the word indies). Leave reviews, ratings, comments, anything. The publishing industry is changing and whatever we can do to increase the quality of our work, we will do. But we can’t do it without readers letting us know what works and what doesn’t.

We're big on family traditions in our family and christmas is no exception.

For us, as a family, christmas begins on the 8th. This is the day when we meet in town for breakfast, do a spot of shopping then its home for mulled wine, carols and of course to decorate the Christmas tree!

Giving Thanks.

How important is it to you to say thanks?

Today my mum and I received lovely gifts, in thanks, for taking a blind friend to and from our craft group. The gifts were simple, but hugely thoughtful. My mum got annoyed at the gift because the lovely woman in question doesn't have much and my mother's opinion is that she shouldn't be 'spending' her money on us.

I see her point, but its my experience, that the giving of thanks is far more rewarding and beneficial than the 'keeping of the cost of the gift'.

When did this happen?

Tonight I watched TV with my mobile, laptop and the iPad on standby... when did this happen?!

My mobile is practically my third arm. I reach for it as soon as I wake, sneeze, breath, blink and even head to the loo.

On Sunday we had a '12 hour mobile free day' ... just to spend some 'quality time' together... next time we'll have to include the laptops and iPads too :)

Actually now that I think about it perhaps Im not so much digitally obsessed but digitally relient!!

Oh to be a full time writer!

Oh to be a full time anything right now! Life has definitely gotten in the way these past few weeks and maybe months. { And no, the irony is not lost on me! }.

Some of you will know that I have a ' day job '. Although perhaps saying I have 'day jobs' is better... and more accurate... short answer I am an Enterprenuer, long answer? I am:

And just plain 'auld me... and believe me, all of this has gotten in the way of everything. :)

I had plans for November, big plans.
I was going to write most of my next book 'Danger; Nettled in a baby's breath.
I was going to get my house organised and cleaned.
I was going to plan for 2013... instead... well instead, none of that happened.

Instead I became a tour operator and planner. My house became a B&B. I became an instant { short-term } Mummy, shoulder to cry on, a chauffeur and life putter on holder... would I change it? Probably not. Would I alter it? Definitely.

I never thought rankings could or would be this exciting. But I suppose as a writer, having spent all those weeks and months locked up typing away you want your baby to come out of the starting gates and win win win...

Ok, I know its not a dog or a horse, but you get the analogy. I write for the love of words and stories and of course to enthrall, excite and delight a reader. So over the past few weeks and months as The Meaning of Purple of Tulips as climbed various ranks on Amazon and Kindle I've decided to share them with you all.

So today... today I am delighted to announce that The Meaning of Purple Tulips has hit Number 9 on Amazon Kindle in the Infertility section!!

So what is the book about?

Faye Winters is a woman with a coloured past and a future fraught with tough decisions.

We meet her as the ‘love of her life’, Nathan [Nate] Locke, flings aside their 5 year relationship just as they begin to plan their wedding. Distraught she throws herself into a tirade of pointless relationships until she meets Brandon Donohue. Falling blindly in love again she sets herself up for fall after fall with this selfish American journalist. I’m thrilled to have been invited to contribute some thoughts on writing to What Blá Did Next; thanks very much Bláithín!

In this vein, for today’s guest post I thought I would blog about my own experiences in crafting my first novel, The Consistency of Parchment. More specifically (and hopefully not too presumptuously) I’d like to offer a few pointers that I now realize had served me fairly well in completing my book.

1) Research your topic

I firmly believe in the value of getting well situated in the topic that you’re planning to write about. With The Consistency of Parchment I had set out to create a novel based partly in modern-day Eastern Europe, with all its attendant political and social history. In order to credibly do so, I spent a lot of time researching the character of Communist rule in this region over the decades from the mid-twentieth century onwards. I had spent some time in Budapest in 2003, which gave me a good foundation from which to explore some of these issues. However, I also did a lot of archival research, collecting any and all manner of book, pamphlet, monograph, and other published document that would help me better understand the setting that I presumed to capture in my fiction.

While I certainly don’t profess any degree of real expertise on this topic, I do feel as though this legwork gave me a much better sense for how to position the story in its broader context. If nothing else, deep research gives you a certain amount of authorial confidence, which helps to see you through the difficult portions of the storytelling task that may follow.

2) Create an outline – and feel free to ignore it subsequently

I’m a consummate list-maker; I tend to sketch out even the most mundane tasks in exacting detail before I commit to action. When it came time to begin writing my book, then, I felt compelled to prepare very precise chapter-by-chapter outlines that would guide the upcoming grunt work. This exercise was certainly helpful, but more so for the mental discipline that it forced upon me than for the actual tangible results that it yielded.

I needed that broad framework to jumpstart my writing. Once I’d started, though, I felt perfectly free to deviate from the outline that I had spent so much time generating in the first place. It can be hard to abandon (or at least significantly alter) a huge chunk of work that you’ve spent so much time getting just right. In my experience, though, on the few occasions when I’ve done so the entire process seems to flow much more naturally as a result.

3) Write blindly

This point is closely related to the previous one. Once you have your outline in place and are either filling it in or have thrown it over in a fit of reckless (but warranted) abandon, write blindly – that is, with a minimum of revision and self-censoring. For me, this is probably the hardest piece of advice to follow. As a writer, I like to think that every word I commit to the page has been carefully weighed and judged eminently appropriate for the need at hand, and so it’s hard for me to let myself be carried away by the creative process. On those rare occasions when I’ve felt as though some particularly insightful prose might be within my reach, though, this controlling tendency does me more harm than good.

In general, I’ve come to believe that there’s a lot to be said for trusting your first instinct and making sure that you get the words out onto the page in the first place. The editing can come later – which brings me to point number four:

4) Edit mercilessly

Once I had the rough first draft of my novel completed, the first thing I did (after the requisite self-congratulation and back-patting) was to drop the manuscript into a drawer and try to ignore it for a few weeks. When I came back to my copy with a more measured opinion of the book, I edited it savagely and without remorse. Sentences or even whole paragraphs were excised, description was added to some chapters and stripped out of others, and grammar was tightened up considerably. This was tough, unforgiving work, but ultimately it provided me with a much improved – and more readable – piece of fiction.

5) Avoid checklists

As a final piece of advice, I would encourage you to be wary of anyone (myself included) who professes to distill the craft of writing into a seemingly simple checklist of steps. Writing is a hard slog, and as authors we all develop our own techniques to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety that grips us all too frequently in the course of our work. You may find some ideas here that pay off exceedingly well for you. On the other hand, some of the points I’ve suggested will be much less relevant. The important thing to realize, I think, is that there’s no best way of writing your masterpiece. Try some of these tips on for size, but hold them loosely … Be ready to let them go if inspiration seems to be pulling you in an altogether different direction.
