Balotelli undergoes Lasik

MILAN, Italy -- Mario Balotelli will reportedly miss Italy's opening two World Cup qualifiers to undergo Lasik eye surgery. He could also sit out Manchester City's Champions League opener against Real Madrid and his former manager at Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported Saturday that Balotelli will have the procedure Tuesday in his hometown of Brescia. He'll then need to rest for 10 days, ruling him out of Italy's matches with Bulgaria on Friday and Malta four days later.

City visits Madrid on Sept. 18, just 12 days after the surgery. Balotelli is near-sighted and has worn contact lenses for years but the lenses have caused allergies recently and an abscess that led to conjunctivitis, which ruled him out of Italy's friendly with England last month.

Balotelli was initially slated to have the operation immediately after the European Championship, but it was postponed when he went on vacation, the Gazzetta reported.

"He can't delay any longer," Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini told the Gazzetta. "Mario can't handle the contact lenses anymore. He's better now but it could become a bother again at any time."
Balotelli led Italy with three goals when the Azzurri reached the Euro 2012 final in July.

Crystalens as an alternative to Lasik

Carol Hannah she had cataracts, but the 73-year-old didn't know the clouding in her eyes would cause her to accidentally drive out of an alley and in front of an oncoming car.

"There was a car coming from my left and I couldn't see it at first. That's when I knew the cataracts were impeding my vision," Hannah said. "I could tell driving that I was not having full vision in my left eye; that's when I decided to get Crystalens."

Hannah's eye doctor, Dr. Lawrence Minardi, has performed Crystalens implants since March 2005.
Crystalens is an artificial lens implant that can treat both a person's cataracts and presbyopia, the loss of near and intermediate vision.

Introduced in 2003, it is the first and only accommodating intraocular lens approved by the Federal Drug Administration, Bausch & Lomb, developers of the Crystalens, wrote in an email. Nearly 4,000 physicians in the U.S. have implanted several hundreds of thousands of Crystalens, Bausch & Lomb wrote.

Minardi said when he performs cataract surgery he typically replaces the eye's natural lens with a standard IOL. But the Crystalens actually mimics what the natural lens of an eye does, he said. "The standard conventional lens implant can only focus for far away because it doesn't have the ability to accommodate like the natural lens," Minardi explained. "There's no perfect lens implant. Nothing we have manmade is quite as good as the natural lens the good Lord gave us, but the Crystalens is made in such a way that it's closer to the natural lens than the conventional replacement."

For Hannah, who wore glasses since her 50s, not having to put another pair of bifocals on again was the biggest bonus of her surgery.

"The regular lens implant doesn't give you the full vision -- you still have to wear glasses," Hannah said. "To me, Crystalens were worth it because I can read a newspaper without glasses. I can watch TV without glasses."

Former First Lady Gayle Manchin, 65, put on her first pair of glasses at the age of 12. She started wearing contacts as a young adult to help her see at a distance and even tried bifocals as an adult.

When she and husband Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., moved to Washington in 2010, Manchin said she started seeing halos of light around cars' headlights and blurry street signs.

"For me, there was a safety issue involved. I didn't feel comfortable driving. I felt my lack of really good eyesight was preventing me from driving as well as I should be," Gayle Manchin said.

After her mother referred her to Minardi, Manchin and Minardi agreed that Crystalens was the best option for her.

Whilst he will be out for a month, it is expected that he will make a full recovery.

He will probably miss a dozen games and likely to return on December 5th, 2011. George suffered the injury Friday during team practice in Detroit when he was hit by a deflected puck. Sheldon Brookbank will be on enforcer duties in the interim.

Dr Gregg Homer from the United States is trying to get funds to support his claims that laser treatment is capable of changing the colour of brown eyes to blue. The treatment takes just 20 seconds and gradually the pigment will turn blue.

Using certain frequencies, the laser light is only absorbed by the pigment areas of the eye and not the remainder. The procedure is irreversible and has received criticism from professionals in the Vision Care industry that the loss of pigment may lead to glare or even double vision.

Will there be a market for changing the colour of peoples eyes?

A survey of 2,500 in the States by Stroma Medical suggests that 17% of Americans would want the procedure if they knew it was completely safe. The growing demand of coloured contact lenses overseas may also make this procedure financially viable.

We are all concious about how we look to others, especially the opposite sex - is there a need to get rid of even contact lenses now with so much pressure on maintaining our vanity?

In the early 80's glasses were a way of life, perhaps you may have had to wear a patch, the ubiquitous patch wearer in school is remembered by all.

Many UK dating sites ask the question whether you are a glasses wearer or not. Does it matter? and why don't they ask if you have had Lasik?

Does it matter if your date wore glasses at some point in their life, currently wears contacts and if they have had Lasik?

Sites such as the one below do not ask you such questions. Naughty dating sites in the UK probably just don't care.

FDA issues 90 days compliance notice for LASIK false claims

The Food and Drug Administration has issued notice to LASIK professionals this week informing them that they have 90 days to update promotional materials that are making false claims about the safety of the popular Laser Eye Surgery treatment.

"It's about the false claims and not adequately providing consumers with information about the risks associated with the procedure," said Erica Jefferson, FDA spokeswoman [Quote from Health Day]

Laser Eye Surgery does have small risks attached to it such as vision loss, double vision and glare.

Furthermore, people with thin or irregular corneas, eye diseases such as dry eye or glaucoma, or cataracts for example are not good candidates for LASIK.

These changes are welcomed, as it highlights the need for those who are seeking to find a LASIK / Laser Eye Surgeon to not be fooled by false safety claims at consultation. This is a very good thing for the industry, and will be welcomed by potential patients and excellent surgeons.

In the United States it is important to ensure that the physician is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Laser Eye Surgery has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years. The main focus, other than giving the best results is the reduction in discomfort from the intrusive nature of Laser Eye Surgery or LASIK.

Kal Chauhan, a mother of 45, has become the first ever person to have the procedure performed in the UK, providing a remedy for a -11 prescription.

Kal received the treatment at the London Vision Clinic, and according to the Mirror newspaper the procedure left her with "better than 20/20 vision".

The costs of the procedure for Kal were around £4000, however, with the existing Laser Eye Surgery procedures being driven down by competitive marketing, it may be as ReLex becomes more popular and widespread that the prices will be driven down.
