Cloth diapers. The very words send fear through many a parents' heart - but a lot of what you have been told about cloth diapers is simply not true. Leaky rubber pants, fiddling with diaper pins and origami folds in rectangles of cloth are usually what people have in mind when they think about cloth diapers. Oh, how the world of diapering has changed!

Cloth Diaper Adversaries Market Against PUL and Cloth Diapers
Of course, many of these myths cultivated about cloth are perpetuated by the disposable diaper industry - after all, protecting their percentage of this $7 billion dollar (yeah, that is billion!) market is important to them. According to the Real Diaper Association, 18 billion disposable diapers are tossed out in the US annually. At an average cost of 25 cents each, that is a lot of money and a lot of landfill space. Just one baby will use an average of 6,000-7,000 diapers before they are old enough to potty learn.

PUL Fabric and Cloth Diaper Myths Busted!
Here are some well-known myths about using "real diapers:"
1) They leak! Any diaper that is not changed frequently enough will leak. However, advanced PUL diaper covers and PUL pocket diapers (a diaper that holds an absorbent insert in a special PUL pocket opening) make leaks a rare happening. In fact, most moms tell me that after switching to cloth they see far fewer leaks and "blowouts" than with disposables. Elastic is a great invention!
2) They are difficult to clean! Well, I spend about 30 seconds cleaning a dirty cloth diaper since I use either a flushable diaper liner or a PUL fabric cloth diaper sprayer attached to the toilet to rinse off any mess. My hands don't get dirty and wet PUL diapers go straight in the diaper pail until wash day. Modern fabrics such as PUL are much easier to clean than the rubber diaper covers of old!
3) They are disgusting to wash! It takes me about 6 minutes, three times a week, to dump a load of cloth diapers into the wash and run a cold rinse. I then run a hot wash and a cold rinse again. Ta da! Clean diapers. I don't have to touch them between the diaper pail and time to put them in the dryer. Thanks to the cool, new-fangled innovation of the washing machine, washing reusable diapers is a snap!
4) All that water, electricity and detergent will cost as much as throwaway diapers! Seriously, this argument is flimsy at best. I use a special biodegradable, additive free detergent and it STILL only costs me 10 cents per load. Running three wash and dry cycles a week just does not make a noticable dent in our utility bills. If you are really worried about it, try using a high efficiency machine and line drying your diapers.
5) You can't use PUL cloth diapers away from home. I use a uncomplicated zippered wet bag made with PUL, the same material that protects against leaks on the diaper to keep used cloth diapers in our diaper bag until we get home. It's like camping, you simply pack out what you pack in. Now that my baby is on solids most of the time, I use a flushable liner when we go out. With a biodegradable diaper liner, I can dump any mess in the toilet and I only have to deal with wet dipes later.

PUL Fabric Washable Cloth Diapers are a No Brainer for Modern Parenting
Cloth diapers are so much easier than you have probably heard! You can get started with cloth for a small investment to see if you like them and start saving your family money with every diaper change. I'll warn you though, a lot of parents are soon addicted to finding the cutest diapers for their babies!

Our world continues to deteriorate as natural cataclysms, nuclear power plant issues and general apathy evokes havoc. Today we face a climbing population, and with that there is big time pollution. The best thing for people today is to turn to green living. PUL fabric diapers can help with green living.

PUL Fabric Diapers Can Help Make the World Healthier for Our Younger Generations

Many people do not actually understand what living green is all about. Anything that you do that produces a beneficial effect on the environment is green living, and this includes making a switch to reusable diapers made with PUL. These are things that we must do so that the younger generation will have a healthy earth to live. The ultimate goal for green living is to have the Earth remain in ecological balance. Not only that, but green living cleanses the surroundings by flushing toxins out of the environment. Whats even more is when we make the choice to live green we are choosing to limit the amount of pollutants that go into our air and water supplies. When we decide to live green, our earth will be a better place for everyone and we can maintain it for a very long time.

Cloth Diaper Investment Stimulates Stay at Home Mom Economies and other Economical Benefits

Our world, and more immediately our own societies are struggling to deal with the ecological crisis, global recession and fiscal crisis. Each day money is being spent on convenience items like disposable diapers while crucial issues are being neglected. Disposable diapers certainly have a place in this world, however daily use of this expensive and highly wasteful item is spending money that could be better allocated to other parts of the economy. The initial investment around cloth diapers can seem steep when you buy them all at once. Start small and work your way up to a full stash. It also helps to support a quality WAHM business as they tend to be more green and create less waste.

PUL Fabric is a Reliable and Reusable Resource for Waste Reduction

What steps do we need to take so that we are in the habit of being green? Are we making an attempt to clean up the environment for later generations? Is everyone on the planet doing their best to reduce pollution? Is the number of men and women who live green enough to protect our succeeding generations? PUL fabric for items that can be made to be reused can be one small step toward saying yes to these questions and more.

Like any other fabric, you can buy PUL fabric in a number of different increments. From PUL fabric Wholesale retailers to PUL fabric by-the-yard, to PUL Fabric cuts that come in 20" increments to make diapers. How you buy PUL Fabric for you and your project will really all depend on what you intend to do with it.

Buy PUL fabric Wholesale when you are going to be using the fabric for large projects or if you are buying a supply of the fabric for a business venture. The cost per yard is much less than by the yard. The more PUL that you buy in one purchase the more you save just like any other bulk item.

Buy PUL fabric by the yard for regular jobs and to get more for your money on day to day crafting and diaper sewing. PUL comes 45" wide. With a yard of PUL you could get several small diapers or a few large diapers all out of 1 piece. Even then, there will be scraps left over that you can use for other projects (like waterproof fabric mats to place out of household plants). When you want to maximize your dollars this is a good way to buy PUL material because you can use almost every single inch of the pul material.

Buy PUL Fabric by the "cut" when you are only going to use pul material for diapers, but you also need to consider what size diaper you are going to make. A standard cut of pul material will usually be about 20"x20" and you can get 2 small or newborn diapers or 1 medium or 1 large diaper out of the cut. The downside to this is that any scraps you have left over will not be usable into anything particularly useful, especially when you make a large diaper out of the cut.

Buying PUL material is just like buying other fabrics for your crafts. You really have to consider what it is you are going to do with it so you can plan out your expenses and what you will have left over. Good luck and happy PUL fabric crafting!

Buying PUL Fabric today is so easy to do. From brick and mortar stores such as Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabrics to multiple online retailers such as Neptune Fabrics it is easier than ever to get your hands on some super soft and easy to use PUL. I could go into all of the different ways you can buy PUL... PUL by the yard, PUL Fabric Wholesale, PUL diaper cuts.... but that's not what this post is about. This post is a quick highlight of the top 5 reason why YOU should give PUL a try for your baby, your home or yourself.

5. Buy PUL Fabric because it's better for the environment. It uses less crude oil to manufacture than paper and plastic diapers and encourages proper disposal of human waste instead of these wastes going to our landfills.

4. Buy PUL Fabric because it's colorful, soft, easy to care for PUL Fabric, Easy to sew and makes a statement. There are so many things you can do with PUL. It really is a unique fabric that can be used not only for baby but for mom, dad, big brother, big sister and the home!

3. Buy PUL Fabric because it makes a statement. While cloth diapering has become more common there are still so many others that are still using disposable diapers on a regular basis! Cloth diapers are so easy and PUL Fabric makes them even easier!

2. Buy PUL Fabric to start a conversation. Others will want to know about this PUL Material. What is it? How do you use it? Where can I get it? You can give them all the answers you learn on this site or better yet, give them the link and let them explore themselves!

1. Buy PUL Fabric because you grandmother would have done it if it had been around back then. That's right. Your grandmother used rubber pants that leaked on her children. Had she had access to PUL fabric then she would have used it too and who would want to disgrace their grandmother? Certainly not me!

This is in no way an exhaustive list... I really only wrote it because when I gifted my grandmother some mats that I made out of pul to put under her plants she was completely fascinated. It was so cute to see her reaction and spark her stories of "when your mother was little we used rubber pants!...." stories. So now, even though I know each time I buy PUL fabric for my household crafts (as my kids are both out of diapers!) I know that my purchase is more than good for the environment, it is also good for a story or two from my grandmother.

Sewing with PUL fabric does not have to be hard, although it will take some special considerations as laminated fabric is slippery (like a silk) and tacky (like a rubber) and so not all machines will handle the PUL material well. You will need to purchase a few sewing notions such as a Teflon Presser Foot or wax or tracing paper for sewing. Also, the kind of thread you choose to use will make a big difference when deciding what you are using your pul fabric for.

PUL Material does not slide under regular presser feet. A regular presser foot, like the standard one that comes on all sewing machines will not slide along the laminated side of the pul material, and high tension settings can bunch and rip the pul cloth. Treat this pul material as you would any other delicate cloth. You will need to try and see what works for you based on your pul fabric project. There are a couple of things you can try when sewing with pul fabric:

PUL Fabric needs a lower tension setting on most sewing machines. Laminated knits do stretch, so you will want as little pressure as possible feeding the pul material through the machine. However, you must always keep in mind that the laminate will make the pul fabric very slippery and so you will have to adjust your sewing speed and stitch length and take great care when guiding the fabric through the machine.

PUL Cloth should always be sewn with the polyurethane laminate side down. This way the feed dogs will be gripping the coated side of the fabric and walking it through rather than trying to get the foot to slide along the coated side. There will be times when you are sewing with pul fabric that you will not be able to sew with the polyurethane laminate side down. There are a couple of things I have tried to make this easier. I purchased a Teflon Presser Foot. The Teflon coating acts as a non-stick surface which makes the pul fabric glide under the foot easier (think flipping a pancake in a Teflon coated pan). I have also used strips of tracing paper to cover the pul fabric an sewn the tracing paper directly to the project. The paper tears cleanly away after sewing so no worries there!

PUL Fabric needs to be sewn with 100% polyester thread for best results. The cotton will absorb any moisture and your PUL Material will leak. Always use 100% polyester thread on your PUL fabric projects. 100% polyester thread is more durable than cotton thread and it will not absorb moisture. This will make sure your pul fabric remains 100% leak free and waterproof.

Caring for your PUL Material is as easy as caring for most of your other garments. PUL Fabric is durable enough to handle multiple washings and is safe to dry in the dryer, even on high heat! When caring for your laminated fabrics follows these simple rules:

PUL Fabric should never be washed with harsh chemical detergents Always wash your pul material items in a gentle, mild or "free" detergent. I have used Rockin' Green on my diapers and I LOVE it. You can always add a 1/2 cup of vinegar or baking soda (or both!) if you need to get a stubborn odor out of your cloth diapers. PUL was originally made for the medical industry and was designed to be capable of disinfecting in high temperature water. Instead of adding chemicals to the water, increase the temperature of the wash water. If you can't do that, add a gallon or so of boiling water to the washer when you clean your pul fabric garments. When you buy pul fabric you can be certain you are getting a lasting, hearty and dependable product.

PUL Dries best on high heat That's right. You can dry your PUL on high heat. The temperature of the dryer will never reach a heat high enough to melt the fabric. Again, PUL was designed to be used in hospitals where it is important for the materials to be durable and easy to manage, not to mention easy to clean and disinfect. PUL can also be dried on the clothes line. You will want to spin the fabric in the washer really well or wipe excess moisture from the PUL side of the fabric before line drying to avoid any lingering water which could cause odor problems.

PUL Fabric should never be used with fabric softeners in the wash In terms of chemical enhancers and cleaners, fabric softener falls into this category as well. Well, lets be a little more realistic. It is not recommended that cloth diapers made with pul be used with fabric softener. Other items, ones that won't be coming in contact with a child's skin are fine to use with fabric softener. If you must use a fabric softener in your pul wash, try baking soda. It's a natural fabric softener.

PUL that is stored in a wet bag or closed diaper pail for long periods of time should be washed with baking soda or OxyClean in the wash cycle PUL is a type of plastic. It is porous, especially the breathable kind. PUL will mildew and or grow mold if left wet for long periods of time. The pul will also absorb odor just like any other plastic that is improperly used. When you buy your pul, plan ahead and get a supply of oxidizing cleaning agent to have in your wash room. This will help with odor buildup and clean your pul safely.

PUL fabric that isn't getting clean enough needs more water. From my experience, pul that doesn't seem like it is getting clean enough in the wash doesn't need more chemicals, it needs more water. Consider doing a cold soak, a rinse and spin then a regular wash on hot.

PUL material is such an innovative, versatile and useful fabric. Following these care tips will ensure you will be highly successful and satisfied with your pul fabric sale and creative items.

PUL helps to save millions of disposable diapers from entering our landfills each year. Using cloth diapers and other reusable items made with laminated textiles helps to reduce our use of crude oil in the making of paper and plastic diapers, saves trees and keeps plastic food baggies out of our landfills and waterways.

PUL laminated material is not biodegradablehowever the countless number of other wastes we save by using it far out weighs the few yards of fabric which will eventually wind up in the landfill. Picture a mountain of soiled diapers and a few yards of fabric... the vision alone should be enough to make you stop and think of the striking benefits of using laminated fabric.

Buying PUL Fabric is a smart choice. It's the number 1 cloth diaper material on the market today. There are many things to consider when buying your PUL Material. This article covers a few of the most important things to consider.

PUL Fabric for diapers comes in either 1 mil or 2 mil thicknesses. Both are 100% waterproof and soft enough for use in baby diapers, the only difference is that 2 mil pul is a bit sturdier and feels thicker to the touch. You can make waterproof diaper covers, swim diapers, all-in-one and pocket diapers using a 1 or 2 mil pul fabric. I prefer 1 mil PUL over 2 mil PUL because it is softer. However my daughter, who was a much heavier wetter than my son required diapers made with 2 mil PUL so I had to be sure to buy the thicker material when making her night time diapers.

PUL Fabric has been given the A-OK seal of Children's Product Safety by the CPSIA. When you buy PUL you know that your baby is coming in contact with a material that is tried and tested against some of the toughest American standards for quality and safety.

PUL Fabric is made in America and 100% Latex Free. This is an American-made product that is safe for use by even babies with the most sensitive of skin. It turns out that other more "natural" products can come with a certain level of uncertainty. My daughter, with her sensitive skin is allergic to wool- so using wool covers over her diapers was impossible. Also, in her PUL covers she always felt dry. While wool does resist absorbing moisture it does not block moisture entirely from the inside out like PUL fabric does.

PUL Material is for more than just diapers. I have used PUL Fabric for household projects, clothing and play items. It truly is an affordable, versatile and creative fabric. Some of the ways you can use PUL Material, though I haven't tried them all myself (yet) are:

* Mattress protector for night time toilet learning
* Customized wipes containers that keep wipes moist
* Wet bag for carrying soiled diapers
* Waterproof book cozy to protect books, notebooks and papers from rain and water damage
* Surface protectors for under indoor plant containers
* Kid-size play tents for outdoor play on a rainy day
* Rain gear for all sizes, child to adult
* Portable changing pad for days on the go
* Beach tote for wet water toys, towels and swimwear
* Umbrella for a stroller

PUL Fabric for diapers comes in either 1 mil or 2 mil thicknesses. Both are 100% waterproof and soft enough for use in baby diapers, the only difference is that 2 mil pul is a bit sturdier and feels thicker to the touch. You can make waterproof covers, swim diapers, all-in-one and pocket diapers using a 1 or 2 mil pul fabric.

All childrens clothing is required to be labeled for its "flammable" properties. Either a label that announces that the item has been treated with a flame resistant chemical and is therefore deemed "flame resistant" OR that the article is flammable. Where does this leave the laminated fabrics now used in some of the most highly regarded cloth diapers on the market today?

At last check, none of the diapers that I have seen provide this information. Babies who are cloth diapered often times are put to sleep for the night wearing a cloth diaper made with PUL Fabric. What are the flammable properties of this type of fabric, and is there a safer alternative for night time cloth diapering?

When looking at the continuum of the rate at which fabrics catch fire you start with cottons being the most flammable materials. They catch fire quickly and burn fast. Wool or other animal fibers tend to be naturally fire resistant without the use of flame resistant chemicals and could possibly have some self-extinguishing properties. However, animal fibers are deceiving because what might look like a flame that has been put out could still be smoldering and hence re-ignite without further cause. Polyester fabrics are typically the most fire resistant, however if and when they do catch fire they are extremely dangerous. Polyester is a synthetic and can be made from virtually any man-made material (such as recycled plastic bags in come cases ie: some fleece material) polyester that is on fire often melts as it burns and can sometimes release toxins into the air that are unsafe for breathing.

To date, even name brand cloth diapers such as SmartiPants, GAD, and Fuzzi Bunz diapers are not marked for infant sleepwear. PUL Fabric that make up the outermost waterproof layer on these types of diapers is not treated for flame resistance. Should this deter cloth diapering families from clothing their young children in PUL covers for night time diapering?

Most cloth diaper moms would say no. However other moms who cloth diaper will dress their children in wool covers at night noting that wool is adequately water resistant enough and more breathable.

PUL Fabric remains the leading cloth diaper fabric for diapers. However it is important to know what we are dressing our children in when we tuck them in for the night. The more knowledge we have about the products that come in contact with the children the more educated decisions we can make about what might be the best choices for the entire family.
