Yes, we are within geometrical shapes. Everywhere there is geometry and the entire world is designed with a geometrical shape. Look at your doors when you enter in your house. This is a rectangle. Look at your house. It is a complex combination of rectangular cube. Look at the window. This is also rectangle, sometimes in combination with a half circle on the top. Now look at the inside of a room. The floor is rectangular, the top is rectangular. Your wall clock is a circle. If you look outside, the moon is a circle or more precisely a round sphere. Same is true with the sun. The sky is like a half of a round sphere. Now it's your turn to become creative and find out more and more geometrical shapes around you.

Who is Kismet?

With the blessings of modern artificial intelligence, now it is possible to design robots that are able to interact with humans in a more meaningful way. The Cog Project conducted in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has shown a new dimension on this issue and Kismet is the outcome of many of the various projects dealing with artificial intelligence. Kismet is a robot who is able to make many social interactions with people. Kismet can show many facial expressions while it tries to interact with the audience. Kismet is designed with a motivational system that is similar to the human system. This system appears to be in a homeostasis condition when the robot is motivated to learn the behaviors which are able to meet the needs.

Conditional reasoning is a term frequently used in Psychology. It is a special type of logical reasoning, which depends on conditional statements. Fluid Intelligence vs. Crystal Intelligence

Many psychologists have assumed that there are many factors of intelligence. Thurstone found seven factors of intelligence. On the other hand, Cattell found 2 factors governing these seven factors of intelligence. These factors he labeled as fluid intelligence and crystal intelligence. Fluid intelligence is a non-learned intelligence that is developed through the interaction with the environment and on the basis of cultural relations, such as reasoning ability to some extent. On the other hand, crystal intelligence is a learned intelligence, the tasks one learns throughout his or her life, such as mathematical ability. According to Cattell, fluid intelligence is essential to gain crystal intelligence.

Intelligence is a critical behavioral quantity which is governed by bio-psycho-sociological factors. Intellect can be defined as a phenomenon that constitutes the power of mind to execute a thinking behavior with reasoning ability for the purpose of gaining knowledge. However, intelligence even today is a very abstract concept and not all psychologists agree to each other.

Intelligence can be of various types. To put it simple, your sister might have an artistic instinct which you don’t have. Again you might have a good player instinct that your sister might not have. So it is really difficult to design any particular scale to measure one's level of intelligence.

With the advancement of the field of genetics, more and more researchers are now taking interest in finding out the genetic base of intelligence. We all know that both genetic factors and environmental factors have a strong influence on intelligence. Quite obviously, this makes intelligence a complex trait. We are not yet able to discover much how the quantity and quality of gene affects intelligence.

Different biogenetic studies suggest that monozygotic twins (MZ) show higher degree of correlation between intelligence and behavioral changes than dizygotic twins (DZ). The correlation between DNA sequence and behavioral difference is causal in natural, since DNA variations may influence the c change in behavioral pattern, but behavioral disparity does not lead to change in DNA sequence. There is still a strong debate, nature vs. nurture, when it comes to many psychological behaviors like intelligence.

Is there Any Relation between Academic Intelligence and Beauty?

Today when I was looking at the picture of Einstein, when he was young, one question came into my mind. Is there any relation between academic intelligence and beauty? As the question strikes my mind, I started looking at different masterpieces. I find most of them have a godly beauty over their faces. On the other hand, if you look at people with low IQ or retarded ones, most of them look like a Mongolian child. I don’t know why this is so. But apparently it seems like that.

So, we can conclude that the Bell's curve can be drawn in the same way as it is drawn to illustrate distribution of intelligence among the population. I am not saying that all beautiful people are intelligent, but what I am trying to affirm is that people with high level of academic intelligence have a god-like facial expression.

Are Intelligent People Lonelier than Average People?

It is said that intelligent people are lonely by nature. But are they lonelier than average people? Many researchers are taking this issue under serious consideration. They try to even discover the root of the problem from the ground of gifted children. George Kaluger and Ruthe Martin are two researchers who have documented a paper called 'The Loneliness of the Gifted Child', in which they have clearly illustrated an interesting point that there is a strong positive correlation between academically gifted and social distance in the classroom, however, not in the elementary level.

To my belief, intelligent people are lonely, because they are not able to easily find out people of intellect at their own level, which causes them not being able to share their own feeling, skills and thoughts. They are unable to find out friends of their own age, of their own mental standards. Quite obviously, this results in inevitable loneliness at their end, from which they can't possibly escape. I can't generalize at this part, as I have only a few evidences in my hand.

Is There Any Correlation between Intelligence and Depression?

Psychology is always one of my favorite subjects. While doing my masters degree in Psychology, I typically take interests in the areas like memory, intelligence and maladaptive behavior. Since then, one question knocked my head down: is there any correlation between depression and intelligence? Well, while many studies have found that there is no significant correlation between intelligence and depression, some studies claim just the opposite. In fact, many of them assert that intelligent people are characteristically depressed. They say that intelligent people tend to be unhappy. I believe it is somewhat true as we see many people with high IQ suffer from a certain degree of depression. But why there is a correlation? Here I would like to quote something from a website called recurrentdepression.com an answer, which I found really interesting. Here it is:

"But what is the ultimate twist on the intellect and depression? Something very surprising. In my research, I have found an extremely high association between intelligence and the likelihood of becoming severely depressed. In fact, a high IQ is a good predictor of depression. Why? Simply because those with higher intelligence are amazingly “creative” with their inner dialogues.

Some of the characteristics of high intelligence are an above-average imagination, superior verbal ability, and advanced analytical skills. This is the perfect recipe for cooking-up very elaborate, and very negative, inner dialogues. And that’s exactly what happens. This helps explain the well-known phenomenon of “tormented geniuses”. Simply, their submission response is often out-of-control. And, despite their genius, they don’t know how to stop it".

Abductive Reasoning and Analogical Reasoning

There are different types of reasoning. Depending on one's own cognitive ability, an apparent individual difference is observed in this domain. In this post, we will discuss about two different types of reasoning – abductive and analogical, which will be followed by other types of reasoning in next posts. Here we go.

Abductive Reasoning

It is also referred to as inference. It affirms that the hypothesis can be best explained with the help of the relevant and evident example. For example, the object or event X is under observation. If Y is true, then X is true, which implies Y might be true.

Analogical Reasoning

The easiest form of abductive reasoning is referred to as analogical reasoning. It implies that if two or more objects or events are somewhat similar in some context, they might be similar in some other contexts too. For example, A and B are similar. If X belongs to A and Y belongs to B, then X and Y are also somewhat similar.

Multiple Intelligence: What Does that Mean?

As proposed by Dr. Howard Gardener in 1983, intelligence is constituted with 8 different factors. They are:

• Logical Mathematical Intelligence

• Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

• Musical Intelligence

• Interpersonal Intelligence

• Intrapersonal Intelligence

• Naturalist Intelligence

So, according to Gardener, we should not take only a single factor under consideration. Many of us have multitude of talents. Sometimes it may be possible that a boy may not be very sharp in his academics, but that does not necessarily means that he is dumb or stupid. It may be quite possible that he is having musical intelligence, if you find him extremely melodious and he loves music from the true core of his heart. Does Birth Order Govern Intelligence Level?

If you take the cross-sectional data, the answer of this question is most probably 'Yes', but the longitudinal data says just the reverse. In the year 1973, Lillian Belmont and Francis Marolla designed a study on the size of the family in relation to birth order and level of intelligence. The study was done on nearly 386, 114 samples. Quite obviously, the study is very complex, so I will advise interested readers to refer the original article.

However, the result of this study sheds light on the following issues –

* Children coming from large family size tend to show poorer intelligence level even when social class variable remains under strict control.

* The first born does better in academics than the later born.

* As much as the size of the family is increased, there is a significant decrease in a particular birth order position.

However, Zajonc, 1976 and De Lint, 1966 show an exception to this study.

Mill (1806 – 1873) Had a Strong Influence over Binet's Work on Human Intelligence

When the Great French Psychologist, Alfred Binet (1857 – 1911) received his degree in law in the year 1878, he started studying science at Sorbonne. Fortunately or unfortunately, he was not somehow happy with his formal schooling system and started studying psychology of his own. Within a little time span, he became absorbed with the theories proposed by John Stuart Mill (1806 – 1873). Mill postulated that the function of human intelligence can be explained with the help of law of associationism. Binet soon understood the drawbacks of the theories proposed by Mill, but throughout his journey Mill had left a great influence all over.

Alfred Binet (1857-1911), The Father of Reasoning Ability Test

The great French Psychologist, Alfred Binet (July 8, 1857 – October 18, 1911) was the first person to be honored for the development of early reasoning ability tests. In the year 1905, he published the first psychometric test for mental ability. At his initial days, Binet was devoted to find out the development of intellectual components among children. This is how his concept of the development of mental age took shape.
