EVA - Modification Proposal of Road Access to Pedro Hispano Hospital

In April 2009, EVA - evolutionary architecture, presented to Matosinhos Mayor, Doc. Guilherme Pinto, a proposal to modify the road access of emergency vehicles through Doc. Eduardo Torres Street to Pedro Hispano Hospital, with the objective to solve the delay those vehicles currently experience when accessing the Hospital. The presented proposal suggests the opening of circulation areas in the central tab of Doc. Eduardo Torres Street, a change that implies minimal construction efforts and offers a precious time saving for these emergency vehicles serving the population of the Porto Metropolitan Area.
We presented this proposal with the assumption that we are contributing for everyone's wellbeing, we understand it as our duty as architects and as citizens. This is EVA SOCIAL.

Em Abril de 2009, a EVA - evolutionary architecture, apresentou ao Presidente da Câmara de Matosinhos, Exmo. Sr. Dr. Guilherme Pinto, uma proposta de alteração dos acessos da Rua Dr. Eduardo Torres ao Hospital Pedro Hispano, para os veículos que circulem em situação de emergência, visando resolver a actual situação com que se deparam os mesmos. Deste modo a proposta apresentada propõe a abertura de áreas de circulação na placa central da Rua Dr. Eduardo Torres, implicando um esforço de construção extremamente simples e diminuto, retirando-se deste modo um conjunto de mais-valias preciosas para a cidade de Matosinhos, para a população residente na área Metropolitana do Porto, seus equipamentos e para o Serviço Nacional de Saúde em geral.
No pressuposto de deste modo estarmos a contribuir para o bem-estar de todos, entendemos este contributo como parte do nosso dever profissional e papel cívico. Esta é a EVA SOCIAL.

A EVA - evolutionary architecture foi convidada a apresentar oficialmente o projecto da Casa das Artes da Banda de Música de Vale de Cambra, aquando do Jantar Anual organizado pela mesma, o qual ocorreu a 2 de Maio de 2009, na Quinta do Castelo, freguesia de Castelões.
Nele estiveram presentes a Direcção da Banda de Música, o Presidente da Câmara de Vale de Cambra bem como diversas entidades políticas.

EVA - evolutionary architecture was invited to officially present the Vale de Cambra House of Arts project, at the Annual Dinner organized by Banda de Música Vale de Cambra, which occurred on May 2, 2009 at Quinta do Castelo, Castelões.
It was attended by the Orchestra Directorate, the Mayor of Vale de Cambra and various political entities.

NEWS - Announced the winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award: Oslo Opera House

The project winner for the european union prize for contemporary architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2009 - was Norwegian National New Opera House, Oslo Norway by architecture firm Snøhetta.

The notice of the winner was given Wednesday, 29 May, in Barcelona. The ceremony of delivery of the prize will on the Mies van der Rohe pavillion by Barcelona on 28 May 2009.

O projeto vencedor do prémio da União Europeia para a arquitectura contemporânea - Mies van der Rohe Award 2009 - foi Nova Ópera Nacional norueguesa, Oslo, Noruega da empresa de arquitectura Snøhetta. O anúncio do vencedor foi dada quarta-feira, 29 de Maio, em Barcelona. A cerimônia de entrega do prêmio será no Pavilhão Mies van der Rohe em Barcelona, em 28 de Maio de 2009.

Almeida House project (Construction #1)

Almeida House project went in construction in March, 2008.
At this time, concrete an masonry are finished. Included in this phase are the construction of the ownership limits walls; floor slabs, coverage slabs and concrete side walls; exterior walls in concrete masonry and interior walls in brick masonry.
As you can see in the slideshow below, concluded this phase, the construction starts to demonstrate the idealized architecture project.

O projecto Moradia Almeida iniciou a construção em Março de 2008.
Neste momento a fase de pedreiro encontra-se concluída. Nesta fase inclui-se a construção dos muros limites da propriedade; das lajes de piso, cobertura e paredes laterais em betão armado; das paredes exteriores em alvenaria de betão e das paredes interiores em alvenaria de tijolo.
Como podem ver no "slideshow" em baixo, concluida esta empreitada a obra começa a tomar forma deixando já transparecer o projecto de Arquitectura idealizado.

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe announced the 5 finalists for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2009, one of the most important and prestigious prizes for international architecture. urbArAma (http://www.urbarama.com/) is an online Atlas of Architecture and Human-built Infrastructure. It's a place for architecture lovers to share their passion about architecture and any human-built infrastructure (civil works, parks, interior design, etc.)

urbArAmA makes easy to share ones passion about architecture. Anyone can post their prefered projects and share them with the Community. All projects are geolocated and can include pictures, videos and description data. Projects can be rated, commented and shared by the Community.

urbArAmA is also a tool for architects, engineers and designers to showcase their project portfolio online. To register and link to the most relevant information about any human-built infraestructure across human history.

One of the most interesting features is the architecture world map. Once there you can filter your results to a particular country and region.

Besides using urbArAmA for discovering great architecture projects you can also use it as a marketing tool or even as your own web page. If you’re an architect or engineer, urbArAmA is a great tool to display your project porfolio on the web. It’s easy to use and free. PLACES - "Minas do Pintor"

"Minas do Pintor" are an old mining complex.

Location: Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal

Period of activity: 1875 to 1958, operated by English company, "The Angle-Mimig Peninsular Chemical & C ª, Ld ª.

Products: The extraction was primarily of arsenic, but also wolfram, tin, copper, lead, gold and silver, the mine was located in the "Beiras' metalliferous seam".

Its deactivation occurred without a rehabilitation process, which raises questions about the current environmental quality. (Minas do Pintor: "uma bomba-relógio química"?)

Remnant of the industrial heritage outside major urban centers of Portugal, "Minas do Pintor" are not in the IPPAR's inventory, and unfortunately little remains of the original industrial complex, only the chimney remains. Today is incorporated in a luxurious residential complex.

Localização: Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal

Período de actividade: 1875 a 1958, explorada pela companhia inglesa, “The Angle-Peninsular Mimig & Chemical Cª, Ldª".

Produtos: extraía-se essencialmente arsénio, mas também tunsténio (volfrâmio), estanho, cobre, chumbo, ouro e prata, é uma das minas situadas no "filão metalífero das Beiras"

Sua desactivação decorreu sem qualquer processo de reabilitação, o que levanta algumas questões sobre a qualidade ambiental actual. (Minas do Pintor: "uma bomba-relógio química"?)

Resquício do património industrial fora dos grandes centros urbanos de Portugal, não consta no inventário do IPPAR e infelizmente pouco resta do complexo industrial, até ao momento permanecem d pé apenas as chaminés. Actualmente esta incorporado num loteamento residencial de luxo.

NEWS - RIBA Stirling Prize 2008

The winner of RIBA Stirling Prize 2008 it's the "Accordia" by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Alison Brooks Architects and Maccreanor Lavington.

According to the prize judges: ""Accordia" is high density housing at its very best, demonstrating that volume house-builders can deliver high quality architecture – and that as a result they can improve their own bottom line."

The winner was announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize Dinner at the Arena and Convention Centre in Liverpool on 11 October.

The six shortlisted buildings for 2008 were:

BUILDINGS - Camouflaging a Beast

The new Ikea Store at Matosinhos, Portugal, is a gigantic beast with 36600 square metres, being one of the biggest Ikea stores in the world.
This 36600 square meters of massive building are decomposed in 6.500 square meters of Showroom, 9300 sqare meters of Self Service Store, 7200 square meters of Service Areas, a 750 people restaurant and 2300 parking places.

It's scary...or not!

What really interests me in all this, it's that in the building entrance, Ikea managed to camouflage all this from it's customers! When you enter the building, you get you are in an shopping area, but not an 36600 square meters shopping area! It's even comfortable: with rolling slopes so you don't have to walk a lot; the restaurant area in a mezzanine; the wood ceiling; and 3 "floating" glass cubes decorated with different house scenarios made with Ikea's furniture.

The Numbers of The Beast (a.k.a. Curiosities):
- Ikea has 237 stores across 34 countries
- Ikea plans to open more 24 stores during 2007
- Ikea's catalogue is the largest publication in the world overcoming even the Bible, with a circulation of 175 millions just in 2007 catalogue
- During 2006 Ikea received 458 millions customers

And the RIBA Stirling Prize 2007 Winner is the Museum of Modern Literature, by David Chipperfield Architects in Marbach am Neckar, Germany!

Although in almost all online public polls the winner was the Casa da Música by a great advantage, the RIBA Stirling Prize 2007 Jury choice was the Museum of Modern Literature.

Once again Portugal’s name is among nominees for an architecture prize. This time it’s the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Our “representation” is not made by an architect, we are being “represented” by a building: Casa da Música, by OMA.

The RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist for 2007 was announced on 26 July 2007, the six nominees are:

- America’s Cup Building, by David Chipperfield Architects in Valencia, Spain
- Casa da Música, by OMA in Porto, Portugal
- Dresden Station Redevelopment, by Foster + Partners in Dresden, Germany
- Museum of Modern Literature, by David Chipperfield Architects in Marbach am Neckar, Germany
- The Savill Building, by Glenn Howells Architects in Windsor, England
- Young Vic Theatre, by Haworth Tompkins in London, England
