Beastie Boys Co-Founder Adam Yauch Dead at 48

Adam Yauch, aka MCA, has died after a battle with cancer at age 48 reports Rolling Stone Magazine. The sad news was broken by longtime friend Russell Simmons, who was the mentor and first manager of the rap-rock trio and whose Def Jam label launched their 1984 breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill.

In addition to his career with the Beastie Boys, Yauch was heavily involved in the movement to free Tibet and co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the late Nineties. In 2002, he launched the film production company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

US adds 243,000 Jobs to cut unemployment!

United States unemployment rate

The U.S. labor market continued to add new jobs in January, pushing the unemployment rate to the lowest level in nearly three years, in a sign that the economy is recovering from the worst recession in decades. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said January’s unemployment rate fell to 8.3% from 8.5% in December as the economy added 243,000 jobs, a much better result than the 125,000 to 150,000 jobs that many analysts had been expecting.

The overall trend trend in the report pointed to strengthening momentum in the U.S. economy. The number of unemployed persons fell to 12.8 million, the lowest number since February 2009, which was President Obama’s first full month in office. Professional and business services added 70,000 job, while the manufacturing sector increased by 50,000. The construction sector, meanwhile, added 21,000 new jobs.

A broader measure of unemployment, the so-called U-6 figure, which includes those with part-time jobs, fell to 15.1%, down one-tenth of a point. Even the Labor Dept.’s revisions for previous months contained good news. November’s job growth was revised from 100,000 to 157,000, while December’s figure increased from 200,000 to 203,000.

The better-than-expected results came even as the number of government jobs declined by 14,000. The strong data is sure to be welcomed by the White House, which hopes that a strengthening economy boosts President Obama’s re-election hopes.

Despite the good news, the economy has a long way to go before it reaches a full recovery. Some 12.8 million people are still out of work, and the unemployment rate of 8.3% is nearly twice what’s considered healthy. But the data suggests the labor picture continues to move in the right direction.

If you’re not aware of Kim Dotcom, the man who changed his last name to pay homage to the World Wide Web, we offer you this brief history lesson. Born in Germany, Kim Schmitz (a.ka. King Kimble, a.k.a. King of the Kimpire, a.k.a. The Kim-pin), is a larger-than-life Internet hustler who hauled in money hand-over-fist by creating Megaupload, a site that essentially allows — er, allowed — people to share copyrighted content.

But that’s not all. His flair for the grandiose knew no terrestrial bounds. He loved to race fast cars and he coveted beautiful women — sometimes having them sprawl out on top of his massive, 6′ 7″ frame. His exact size remains somewhat of a mystery — it seems like each reporter uses a different measuring tape. His list of eccentricities goes on.

A megapixel (MP or Mpx) is one million pixels, and is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras or the number of display elements of digital displays. For example, a camera with an array of 2048 × 1536 sensor elements is commonly said to have "3.1 megapixels" (2048 × 1536 = 3,145,728).

Digital cameras use photosensitive electronics, consisting of a large number of single sensor elements, each of which records a measured intensity level. These sensor elements are often called "pixels", even though they only record 1 channel (only red, or green, or blue) of the final color image.

Citing megapixels (MP) is a popular shorthand way to express the resolution of a digital camera in terms of how many millions of individual pixels (picture elements) are present in the image at time of capture.

Note the significance of the phrase ”...at time of capture” in the definition above. Resolution can be occultly increased through interpolation, a process that analyzes actual data and makes intelligent guesses to increase the quantity of information. The number of physical pixels doesn’t change. The camera’s signal processing engine fills in the blanks based on complex mathematical algorithms.

After an image is captured you can change the number of pixels that it contains, sometimes without even realizing it. When we Resample an image we change its pixel dimensions. Upsampling involves adding pixels, while Downsampling requires discarding pixels. Both procedures degrade image quality, sometime significantly. People often do this indiscriminately when resizing images to print them. Below is an extreme example of an image that’s been degraded by Upsampling.

Resolution has a horizontal component and a vertical component. An image that is 1200 pixels tall by 1800 pixels wide contains 1200×1800 or 2,160,000 pixels. That’s about 2-megapixel. One megapixel is not actually one million, although it’s close. 1MP = 1024×1024 = 1,048,576, so we accept with nearly 5% inaccuracy because, well, it really doesn’t matter just as long as everyone counts them and labels them the same way.

Incidentally, an image that measures 1200×1800 is said to have an Aspect Ratio of 2:3, which is the same as a 4×6 inch print.

Many camera specifications show one number for Total Pixels and a lower number for Effective Pixels. The first, larger number indicates how many pixels can be counted on the entire surface area of the CCDor CMOS imager, including the edges that are not used. The second number is the only one that’s meaningful, as it indicates how many are actually recording data.

How many megapixels do you really need? It all depends on what you want to do with the image. Unfortunately, digital cameras are lumped into categories based on the number of megapixels they can capture, and uninformed consumers make erroneous conclusions about image quality based on that single label. Having more pixels does not always mean better images. These images were shot with a humble 3-megapixel camera.How many megapixels do you need?

Having more megapixels can offer some distinct advantages, however. Higher resolution images produce larger prints without loss of quality. If you make 13×19 inch prints, for example, you need all the resolution you can get. The second advantage, one that’s all too often overlooked, is that you can crop smaller portions of a high-res image and still retain high quality.

On the other hand, if you are producing images for a website, or mostly print 8×10 or smaller, a nice 6-to-10 megapixel camera will serve you fine. Like many photographers, however, you may cling to the notion that someday you’ll want to turn your images into gigantic poster-sized prints. In that case, shoot large RAW images now and you won’t regret it laterâ€”that is, unless you run out of hard drive space. Read on.

High resolution comes at a high price. More megapixels mean larger files. Large files make for longer download times and can really fill up a memory card fast. Ditto your hard drive and backup externals. It’s not unmanageable, but you should be prepared.

‘Simpsons’ console version released!

Finally, Konami’s classic game Simpsons hits Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation this month.

There have been many Simpsons-branded video games over the years, from Krusty’s Fun House to the oddly fun Simpsons: Hit & Run, but this is the only one most people remember.
There really isn’t much to it. You choose either Homer, Marge, Lisa or Bart and then rampage around Springfield hitting wave after wave of hired goons over the course of eight levels. The story has something to do with Smithers kidnapping Maggie for Mr. Burns but, as with almost every game of its time, the story really isn’t that important.

The new version includes some fun extras like four-player online cooperative play and access to the Japanese version of the game. There are three modes of play: one with unlimited lives, one with a single life and “Quarters” mode where you have 10 virtual quarters to get through the whole game

When we start learning photography, first let us understand basic jargon's and terms used in and around the industry. let us start with focal length.

Here is an extract from the professional photographer Tom Hill in his blog explaining what is focal length.

The focal length of a lens refers to the actual length of the lens from a point inside its front lens element to the point where it comes to focus -- in our case, that is on the camera sensor -- when the lens is focused at infinity. Modern optical systems and zooms can make this calculation more exacting, but this definition is sufficient to understanding the elementary difference between lenses and how to use them creatively. Focal length is typically expressed in millimeters for modern DSLR lenses.

What we call a "normal" lens is one where the focal length is approximately equal to the diagonal of the sensor plane. On a full-frame (35mm) sensor that would be a 50mm lens. On the smaller APS sized sensor that would be a 35mm lens. All other focal length categories are given relative to what is "normal".
For instance, a wide angle lens is one that is wider that a normal lens, while a telephoto lens is longer than a normal lens.

Wide angle lenses take in a larger visual area that makes them most suitable for wide landscapes, while telephotos act more like telescopes for close-up viewing of distant subjects. These are the obvious, practical reasons for selecting one focal length over another. More importantly, however, are the creative characteristics each focal length has.

If you’re trying to decide which lens to buy, here are some questions that you should answer (on your own) before you decide to go to the camera store.

1. What is your current skill level? Are you a raw beginner or advanced amateur? What are your goals? Do you want to turn pro or just shoot family photos? The advice I would give to someone buying their very first serious camera lens would sometimes be different than it would for someone who’s been at this five years. Pros need lenses with wide (fast apertures) etc.

2. What subjects do you like to photograph? The lens I’d suggest for photographing birds is very different than the one I’d suggest for a food photographer. Some subjects require long lenses (like sports and wildlife.) Other subjects like architecture require very wide lenses.

3. Will you primarily be shooting indoors or outside? If you’re shooting mostly indoors you’ll have to consider a faster lens than if you’ll just be shooting outdoors. Unfortunately, faster lenses cost more. But if you can’t or won’t use flash, super wide apertures are going to be important to you.

4. How much money do you want to spend? Lenses are like most things – you get what you pay for. Knowing how much you want to spend will often have a big influence on what I’d recommend. I personally think the lens is more important than the camera body – in some cases. It’s sort of like stereo equipment. Every genuine expert in that field I’ve spoken with says to spend the money on speakers. Here, I’d suggest spending the money on glass.

5. How long will you keep the lens? If you turn your gear over frequently, it might make sense to go with something less expensive than if you plan to use the lens over the entire length of your career. If you are the kind of person who hangs on to everything you buy, save your pennies and buy the best.

6. How strong are you? Weight (and size) are important factors in lens choice. I know many photographers who were very excited to get a Nikon 200-400 F/4 lens until they actually had to hold it. The thing is a beast. Are you prepared to carry whatever lens(es) you buy? It’s a shame to buy a lens and then not use it because it’s too much of a hassle to carry it.

7. Which is most important? Price, quality, durability? An old businessman taught me a very important lesson early in life. You can have it good, fast or cheap. Pick any two.

Welcome back guys…. If you have been following my blog from lately, you might be already aware about my craziness in photography. Even though my blog contains contents from all topics, photography is one major Topic in those.

Recently i started getting some free time for “extra curricular activities” and decided to start again my adventure with photography. I am seriously following some of the great photographers of the time and like to share my knowledge with you guys.

This series of post are aimed at “amateur” photographers and “more than just amateur” photographers whose are interested in “placing tripod before low light shooting” in other words making their photography basics right.

Take control of your picture-taking and watch your pictures dramatically improve. Become a picture director, not just a passive picture-taker. A picture director takes charge. A picture director picks the location: "Everybody go outside to the backyard." A picture director adds props: "Girls, put on your pink sunglasses." A picture director arranges people: "Now move in close, and lean toward the camera."

Most pictures won't be that involved, but you get the idea: Take charge of your pictures and win your own best picture awards.

The number one flash mistake is taking pictures beyond the flash's range. Why is this a mistake? Because pictures taken beyond the maximum flash range will be too dark. For many cameras, the maximum flash range is less than fifteen feet—about five steps away.

What is your camera's flash range? Look it up in your camera manual. Can't find it? Then don't take a chance. Position yourself so subjects are no farther than ten feet away.

If your subject is smaller than a car, take a step or two closer before taking the picture and zoom in on your subject. Your goal is to fill the picture area with the subject you are photographing. Up close you can reveal telling details, like a sprinkle of freckles or an arched eyebrow.

But don't get too close or your pictures will be blurry. The closest focusing distance for most cameras is about three feet, or about one step away from your camera. If you get closer than the closest focusing distance of your camera (see your manual to be sure), your pictures will be blurry.

German court rejects Samsung's second 3G patent complaint against Apple

It seems patent wars never end. here is the latest from Germany. The Mannheim Regional Court rejected the second of Samsung’s patent infringement claims against Apple. The decision addresses one of Samsung's arguments that Apple's 3G / UMTS technology infringes upon its patents. Judge Andreas Voss officially shot down these claims early this morning, though he didn't offer an immediate reason for his ruling.

As FOSS Patentspoints out, however, these initial decisions against Samsung may be based on the validity of the specific patents themselves, and would therefore have no bearing upon the outcome of the Korean manufacturer's three other claims -- all of which are based upon different 3G / UMTS patents.
In addition, the company is pursuing two lawsuits based on patents not related to 3G standards, including one, apparently, that details a way to type smiley emoticons on a mobile handset..

Julian Assange is starting TV Show

The Australian newspaper reported on Tuesday that the 40-year-old WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is set to interview “key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries from around the world.” The WikiLeaks site said that the show will have a focus on the future, with the theme being “the world tomorrow.” In a statement, Assange said that, “through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it.”

He also added “This is an exciting opportunity to discuss the vision of my guests in a new style of show that examines their philosophies and struggles in a deeper and clearer way than has been done before,”.

Interestingly, even though it’s currently unknown which channels will air the program — and don’t discount the possibility of WikiLeaks broadcasting it online — 10 weekly half-hour episodes are expected to air starting in March. WikiLeaks claims that initial licensing commitments cover more than 600 million viewers.

Sumatran Elephants Extinct in 30 Years?

Environmentalists say the Sumatran elephant could be extinct in the wild within the next three decades unless steps are taken to slow the breakneck pace of deforestation.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature recently listed the animals as "critically endangered," after their numbers dropped to between 2,400 and 2,800 from an estimated 5,000 in 1985

The decline is largely because of destruction of their habitat, with forests all across the Indonesian island of Sumatra clear-cut for timber, palm oil or agricultural plantations.

Carlos Drews of the environmental group WWF says if urgent action is not taken to reverse this trend, "these magnificent animals are likely to go extinct" in less than 30 years.

Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking a picture of someone, hold the camera at the person's eye level to unleash the power of those magnetic gazes and mesmerizing smiles. For children, that means stooping to their level. And your subject need not always stare at the camera. All by itself that eye level angle will create a personal and inviting feeling that pulls you into the picture.

If your subject is not in the center of the picture, you need to lock the focus to create a sharp picture. Most auto-focus cameras focus on whatever is in the center of the picture. But to improve pictures, you will often want to move the subject away from the center of the picture. If you don't want a blurred picture, you'll need to first lock the focus with the subject in the middle and then recompose the picture so the subject is away from the middle.
Usually you can lock the focus in three steps. First, center the subject and press and hold the shutter button halfway down. Second, reposition your camera (while still holding the shutter button) so the subject is away from the center. And third, finish by pressing the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 Coming soon in Europe

Acer held a press event in Germany recently, where it unveiled that the new Iconia should be launched in Europe in April.

Unlike the A700, which has a 10.1 inch display with 1920 x 1200 pixels, the A510 only comes with a 1280 x 800 pixels screen (which still measures 10.1 inches). Other than that, the device features a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, Dolby Mobile sound, two cameras (on the front and on the back, of course), and 16GB of internal memory (but there will probably be 32GB and 64GB versions as well).

Apparently, the tablet will be priced at about €500.

The Acer Iconia Tab A510 will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich from day one. It remains to be seen when (or if) the tablet will be officially released in North America.

That's all the rumor mill's wrought for now, folks, but we'll keep you posted should the news go official.

Next to the subject, the most important part of every picture is the light. It affects the appearance of everything you photograph. On a great-grandmother, bright sunlight from the side can enhance wrinkles. But the soft light of a cloudy day can subdue those same wrinkles.

Don't like the light on your subject? Then move yourself or your subject. For landscapes, try to take pictures early or late in the day when the light is orangish and rakes across the land.

NASA inviting future astronauts

HOUSTON:

Individuals interested in becoming America's future space explorers have until Friday to submit their applications. The deadline to apply for NASA's next astronaut class is Jan. 27.

The agency typically receives as many as 3,500 applicants for each astronaut class. Thus far, NASA has received more than 3,000 applications since November for this class.

"We are excited about the response we have received, and we want to encourage anyone contemplating this dynamic and exciting career to apply," said Peggy Whitson, chief of the Astronaut Office. "We are entering a new phase in human spaceflight with amazing opportunities to live and work in space. We want the best, the brightest and the most talented mix of professionals to join our team."

Those interested in applying for the astronaut corps can submit their applications through the federal government's USAJobs.gov website. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering, science or math and three years of relevant professional experience. Educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade also are encouraged to apply.

NASA expects to announce the final selections in 2013 with initial training to begin that summer.

Sunday Solar Flare

A powerful solar flare called a coronal mass ejection occurred on the sun Sunday night and has sent a burst of radiation in the form of protons toward Earth, possibly fouling up satellite communication and forcing the rerouting of planes near the poles. Even traveling at 1,400 miles per second (2,200 kps), the particles needed a while to cover the 93 million miles (149 million km) that separate the sun from Earth.

The 2005 blast was a lot more powerful — and a lot faster too, with the leading edge of the particle storm hitting us in less than an hour. That’s one reason to expect only mild effects from this blast, but that doesn’t mean there will be no danger. A sudden onslaught of storm-related radiation can potentially disrupt electrical grids, not to mention satellite communication.

The strongest flood of radiation may slide north of Earth, but polar-traveling airplanes will likely reroute to skip the increased radiation and intense communication jamming. NASA notes that “no adverse effects” will fall upon the six astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Along with the possible issues comes potential beauty. The storm of radiation may send the northern lights a touch south (but likely not as far south as Alabama, as seen during an October solar storm), sending off a new wave reaction: floods of new aurora photos from Tuesday evening’s skies.

Centre-stage is a great place for a performer to be. However, the middle of your picture is not the best place for your subject. Bring your picture to life by simply moving your subject away from the middle of your picture. Start by playing tick-tack-toe with subject position. Imagine a tick-tack-toe grid in your viewfinder. Now place your important subject at one of the intersections of lines.
