CUMBERLAND FALLS - Cumberland Falls State Park, Kentucky

Cumberland Falls at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is the largest fall east of the Mississippi River and south of Niagara Falls. It is 125-feet across and 68-feet high.

The mist of Cumberland Falls creates a Moonbow which appears under a bright full moon and a clear sky. This moonbow is the only one in the western hemisphere.

Visit Cumberland State Park's website for dates and times in which the moonbow may be visible.

ACCESSIBILITY: Several trails lead from the parking lot which has plenty of handicapped parking to various viewpoints.

BRANDYWINE FALLS - Cuyahoga Valley Ohio

Brandywine Falls is a National Park located in Cuyahoga Valley, Ohio. Brandywine Creek carved a 65-foot fall that cascades over layers of rock made of shales formed from mud on the sea floor that covered the area 350-400 million years ago into a gorge.

The moss, eastern Hemlocks, and Maple trees grow abundantly among the moistness of the gorge.

Accessibility: An ADA boardwalk leads to an observation deck at the top of the falls. Steps also lead to the bottom observation deck to be face-to-face with the powerful falls.

Handicapped restrooms are located directly off the parking lot.

Handicap parking signs designated for those with handicap placards are next to the restrooms and at the head of several walking trails and biking trails.

The biking trails are paved and worth the walk through scenic woods. Maps of the trails are available at a kiosk near the restrooms.

FALL CREEK FALLS - Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee

The Fall Creek Falls State Park is 26,000 acres making it the largest state park in Tennessee. The park has more than 34 miles of trails, an Inn, 222 campsites and 30 cabins, playgrounds, picnic tables and pavilions, and a golf course. The State Park Environmental Education Center is the Nature Center at Fall Creek Fall offering hands-on environmental education, school programs, and overnight field trips.

Fall Creek Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in eastern United States. Of the four waterfalls within the park, Fall Creek Falls is the only wheelchair accessible falls.Fall Creek Falls is the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains.

WILDCAT FALLS - South Carolina

Wildcat Falls, officially known as Greenville Wayside Park, ia divided into three tiers. All three are fed by Wildcat Branch Creek. The lower section called Wildcat Wayside Falls can been seen right off the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway in Greenville County. The fall drops 30-feet before spilling into a shallow granite pool.

ACCESSIBILITY: No hiking required. Roadside parking is available for all types of vehicles. Wheelchairs can pull right up to the waterfall pool. The fall can be seen from the side of the road; in fact, you don't even need to get out of the car.

If able, a few natural steps on the left side of lower falls leads to Middle Falls. Middle Falls cascades 10-feet. A shelter built in 1930 is located on the side of Middle Falls. The shelter was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp as a resting stop for traveling motorists.

TYPE: Tiered: Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls.

Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps.

DIRECTIONS: Drive 5 miles west from Greenville, SC on US 276. The waterfall is located on the right side of the road. The Wildcat sign is located on the right side of the road too.

AMICALOLA FALLS - Amicalola Falls State Park

Amicalola Fall cascades more than 729 feet (from top to bottom), four times the height of Niagara Falls, making it the tallest southeast. Amicalola Falls is the high-point of Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. The name comes from a Cherokee Indian word meaning "tumbling waters".

A $5.00 parking fee is due upon entry to the park. There are several parking lots, a store, a museum of wildlife in the park, and rangers on-site for any type of state park questions.

ACCESSIBILITY: Overlooks, platforms, bridges, trails, and a 625 step staircase provide spectacular scenery and access to the falls. A .3 mile ADA trail made of recycled tires offers easy entry to a bridge near the upper third of the falls. If you are physically-able, 625 steps span from the base to the top of the falls. Challengers can join the Canyon Climbers Club. Handicap Parking signs designate handicap parking in all parking lots.

An 8.5 mile trail leads to the southern end of the famous 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail.

TOCCOA FALLS - Georgia

Toccoa is a Cherokee word for "beautiful". Located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College campus in north Georgia, the 186-foot high waterfall is one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi. In fact, the fall is taller than Niagara Falls.

ACCESSIBILITY: The falls' access is through the Toccoa Falls gift shop. Open from 8:30am to sundown, the admission is nominal. Ticket prices are $2 for adults, $1 for seniors, and free for children (6 and under) and veterans. The walking path is slightly uphill with small crushed gravel. A golf cart is available to those who need extra assistance to the base of the falls.

TYPE: Plunge: Water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface. The 186- foot vertical fall plunges into a green pool of water. The creek continues to flow throughout the 1,100 acre campus.

DIRECTIONS: At the entrance of the college, stop at the Security booth. The officer will guide you in the correct direction. Follow the small signs to the gift shop parking lot which has several handicap parking spots.

HIGH FALLS - DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

High Falls is one of the 4 major waterfalls in DuPont State Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in Transylvania County on Little River.

The falls gradually flows over 125-feet of wide granite. The water stays on the rock for the entire drop.

Fan: Water spreads horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with bedrock

ACCESSIBILITY: Trails pass four falls, Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, Bridal Falls, and High Falls. Handicap parking is available at High Falls or Hooker Falls. ADA trails lead to the overlook that allows full view of the entire falls and a second view from the covered bridge at the top of the falls. Connected ADA trails pass High Falls and Hooker Falls.

GREAT FALLS NATIONAL PARK - Virginia

The Potomac River falls rapidly over steep jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge.

Great Falls Park is a 800-acre National Park along the Potomac River. The park is riddled with history; first known example of blasting powder used for engineering purposes, the C&O Canal, between 1906 and 1932, the Washington % Old Dominion Railway operated a trolley park at the Falls.

The remains of the 1785 Potomack Canal, the first canal in the United States that used locks to raise and lower boats, which connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers. The C&O Canal Company created the water highway. The C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) Canal towpath was used to ship goods to market.

The lock-keeper house was enlarged to accommodate a hotel and tavern to welcome Washingtonians in the 1870's to natural beauty.

ACCESSIBILITY: The park is open during daylight hours. The parking lot provides 200 spaces as well as handicap parking close to the snacking area and picnic tables.

Restrooms are available a short distance from the parking lot along the path to the lock-keeper house and the Falls.

PALOUSE FALLS - Palouse Falls State Park, Washington

On February 12, 2014, Palouse Falls was deemed the official waterfall of Washington State. Meaning "Falling Water", named by the Palouse Indians, the Falls is located within the Palouse Falls State Park.

FALL TYPE: Lying on the Palouse River, plunge pool type Fall dumps 198 feet into a pool that flows into the Snake River.

INDIAN MYTH: Five giant Wolf brothers with spears fought Big Beaver (who stayed peacefully in its hole in the ground) killed giant Beaver. Mortally wounded, Beaver died thrashing and clawing the rock to gouge out the cliffs. When it died, its heart turned to stone.

ACCESSIBILITY: Trails for hikers lead to the base of the Falls. 0.5 miles of ADA paved paths lead to several overlooks, kiosks full of information about the park and the creation of the canyon, pit toilets, and unsheltered picnic tables.

DIRECTIONS: From Washtucna, drive SW on Main Street for 6.5 miles. Turn onto WA-261S. Follow the signs to Palouse Falls State Park. The highway winds through the country-side for 8.5 miles. You will think you are traveling incorrectly because the area is "open range". The Palouse Falls State Park road is on the left with a clearly marked sign. Travel 2.4 miles on a dirt and gravel road. The parking lot with handicap parking signs and restrooms are at the end of the road.

DOANES FALLS - Royalston, Massachusetts

In the 19th century, Amos Doane owned the land and a four-story tall manufacturing mill of doors, sashes, and blinds that sat on the falls. Later aftser the Doane's mill failed, several mills-grist, saw, pail, and falling-operated successfully on the falls.

WATERFALL TYPE: The waterfalls cascade over boulders, flat granite, and small islands at several points on the Lawrence Brook before plunging into the Tully Lake.

ACCESSIBILITY: Trails lead down both sides of the stream. Two types of trails lead to the upper falls and lower falls. Moderate to strenuous trails lead to viewing points and to the base of the falls; however, trails marked as handicapped with handicapped signs are smooth. The trails lead directly to viewing areas.

Kent Falls is one of the most fabulous waterfalls in the New England states dropping 200 feet in 1/4 mile before flowing into the Housatonic River.

This oldest state park in Connecticut was a gift to the state from the White Memorial Foundation in 1915.

The area is named "Sactacook" after a small Indian tribe that originated in Southwestern Connecticut.

ACCESSIBILITY: Handicap parking signs are at the head of the paved trail that leads through the covered bridge and onto the waterfall. At the base of the fall, a flat stone platform provides a serene view of the fall.

FALLING SPRINGS CREEK - Chambersburg, PA

In the middle of the Civil War rich colonial town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania is a small park call Fort Chambers Park. Falling Spring Creek flows into the Conococheague Creek. Conococheague Creek starts in Chambersburg, and then flows into the Potomac River.

Benjamin Chambers Fort (1756-1760) was a settler's stone house, sawmill, and gristmill surrounded by a stockade.

The old water wheel was part of the original Gristmill.

ACCESSIBILITY: Starting at the parking lots handicap parking sign, paved walkways and bridges cross the springs. Observation areas allow a closer look at the water wheel and waterfall.

MUDDY CREEK FALLS - Swallow Falls State Park, Maryland

Nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland is Swallow Falls State Park. Among the many tall Hemlocks, Maryland's tallest waterfall crashes fifty-three feet. Muddy Creek Falls is on the Youghiogheny (pronounced: Yawk-a-gheny) River and Toliver Creek.

ACCESSIBILITY: Handicap parking is available at the ramp that leads to the fall's overlook platform. Handicap parking and accessible bathrooms are at a parking lot beside the fee booth located at the park entrance.

FEE: The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, as well as weekends in May, September and October $3/person for Maryland residents, $5 for out of state residents. All other times $3/car for Maryland residents, $5/car for out of state residents.

TYPE: Punchbowl - Water descends in a constricted form and then spreads out in a wider pool.

Cascade - Water descends a series of rock steps.

Tidbit: 1,917 acres were donated by John and Robert Garrett of Baltimore to be used as a state forest. Also, in 1918 and again in 1921, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Burroughs and company encamped by Muddy Creek Falls.

DIRECTIONS: Follow Rt. 219 south 19.5 miles to Mayhew Inn Road (2 miles past Deep Creek). Turn right on Mayhew Inn Road, travel 4.5 miles to end of road. At the stop sign turn left onto Oakland Sang Run Road, travel 0.3 miles to first road on the right which will be Swallow Falls Road. Turn right onto Swallow Falls Road and travel 1.3 miles to Swallow Falls State Park.

NIAGARA FALLS - Niagara Falls State Park, New York

DESCRIPTION: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie overflow into Lake Ontario. About 150,000 gallons of water/second floods over the America side of Niagara Falls. The height is 176 feet. Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in America.

Besides the spectacular scenic views of the falls and the experience of the mist at many points in the park or hearing the Fall's roar which makes it nearly impossible to carry on a conversation in a normal voice volume, the park offers dining, Cave of the Winds tour, Legends of
Adventure movie (meet daredevils traversing the Falls), sea life at the Aquarium of Niagara, and boat rides to the bottom of the Falls on "Maid of the Mist", as well as a touring shuttle.

In the late 1860's, a small group of environmentalists founded the Free Niagara movement. The movement wanted the natural beauty of the land surrounding the falls to be protected and remain free to the public. The entire network of paths through the wooded areas and along the banks of Niagara River stays maintained and preserved. Even though the park entrance is free, a $10 parking fee is due upon exiting.

ACCESSIBILITY: Wheelchairs and strollers are available at the welcome center. Level pathways and elevators are available for easy access to anywhere in the park. The trolley and "Maid of the Mist" are accessible for wheelchairs. The 230-foot Observation Deck has elevators to the top overlook and to the base of the falls. Accessible pathways lead to the base of the falls to experience the massive amounts of mist.

DIRECTIONS: After crossing Grand Island Bridge ($1 toll), take exit 21 to Robert Moses Parkway. Continue on the Parkway as it turns into Prospect Street. Follow the signs that direct you to Niagara Falls State Park parking lots.

KANAWHA FALLS - West Virgina

DESCRIPTION: Kanawha Falls is located in an unincorporated community in Fayette County West Virginia. The Falls is on the Kanawha River, 2 miles south of Gauley Bridge.

The Falls are a mere 15 feet high, but very wide.

ACCESSIBILITY: A walking path leads to the old mill that sits on the edge of the Fall. Handicap fishing is available directly off of the parking lot which is positioned in front of the Falls.

TYPE:
Tiered: Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls.

DIRECTIONS: The Falls are right along US60. Drive south on US 60 for 21 miles; one-mile past Gauley Bridge. The red Kanawha Falls sign is well marked on the left; however, during the "rainy" season, you may sidetracked by the small waterfalls on the left of the road (driving south). Be aware, you may fly right by the parking lot to Kanawha Falls.

MINNEOPA STATE PARK - Mankato, Minnesota

MINNEOPA FALLS STATE PARK - Mankato, Minnesota

Minneopa Falls are located inside Minneopa State Park in South Central Minnesota near Mankato and New Ulm. The word "Minneopa" is Dakota language meaning "water falling twice" which explicitly describes the alluring double falls. The upper falls drops 7-10 feet and the lower falls plunges 40 feet into a pool. The Minnesota River and Minneopa Creek flow through the park which are the source of the waterfall.

A $5 day pass is required for entrance into the park. A fee that is well worth the tranquil view and relaxation created by the sound of water spilling over rock formations. The park is open year-round from 8am-10pm.

ACCESSIBILITY: A concrete trail leads directly from the gravel parking lot, past picnic areas with shelters and tables. Shaded areas with picnic tables and grilling areas are available also. The trail leads to a picturesque bridge that crosses the waterfall between the upper and lower fall. Following the path around a bend, a full scenic view of both the double fall and bridge can be seen. Clean bathrooms are available; however, the entrance is a tight squeeze for a wheelchair.

DIRECTIONS: Drive west of Mankato on Highway 60 for 3.5 miles. Watch for the brown State Park sign. Turn right on Highway 68 and drive north for 1.6 miles to the park entrance.

CATARACT FALLS - Cloverdale, Indiana

DESCRIPTION: Cataract Falls, located in a park in Indiana in a town named Cloverdale, Indiana (west central part), is the largest waterfall in Indiana. Two sets of falls on Mill Creek, the upper and lower fall, create a cascading fall that drops 86 feet. The upper fall drops 20 feet and the lower fall approximately a half mile away drops 18 feet.

ACCESSIBILITY: Concrete paths with viewing areas lead directly from the parking lot to the upper falls. Picnic tables, shelters, and bathroom facilities are available at the upper falls. A short drive through the park takes you to a parking lot at the lower falls. There are no accessible paths to the lower falls; however, a grassy area isn't too bumpy for a wheelchair to cross for a closer look.

FEATURE: A 140 foot covered bridge was built at the upper falls in 1876 and was open to traffic until 1988.

FEE: The Cataract Park website stated there is a $5 fee unless you arrive before the park office opened. If so, you may enter the park free of charge. When we went the office looked deserted.

DIRECTIONS: From I-70, drive south on US231 and Bloomington. Watch for signs to Cataract Falls. Turn on Cataract Falls road. Drive 3 miles. Cataract Falls is on the right. A large parking lot is directly off of the road. The park is open sun-up to sundown.

BOND FALLS - Paulding, Michigan

DESCRIPTION: Bond Falls, western U.P. Michigan, is in southern Ontonagon County. It falls over a thick formation of fractured rock. The total fall is approximately 50 feet; located in the middle branch of Ontonagon River.

ACCESSIBILITY: Paved paths lead directly from the parking lot to a large boardwalk that raps from one side of the falls to the opposite side in a half moon shape. Incorporated at six points on the horseshoe, three special viewing areas allow for seating or clear views. Able-bodied people can take steps to the top of the falls.

TYPE: Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps.

DIRECTIONS: In the town of Paulding, Michigan (unincorporated), turn off the main road (45) onto Bond Falls Road. Drive four miles to the Bond Falls sign located on the left side of the road. A $9.00 day fee is required for out of state vehicles upon entrance: payable at the ranger's booth.

Tahquamenon Falls - Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Michigan

Tahquamenon (pronounced like phenomenon) Falls is located in the eastern upper peninsula of Michigan. Tahquamenon River flows into a bay on Lake Superior. It's copper color is caused by tannin from cedar swamps draining into the river.

Accessibility: Paved pathways lead to several viewing areas of the upper falls. Steps lead to the lower falls.

Fall Type: Plunge: Water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface.The fall is 200 feet across with a drop of 48 feet. The Fall is one of the most voluminous waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, with Niagara Falls being the most.

Directions: Follow M-123 north of Newberry, Michigan for approximately 22 miles. The Upper Fall Tahquamenon State Park sign is on the left. The park is located on the right. Out of state vehicles pay a $9.00 day-pass fee or $31.00 year-pass.

THUNDER BAY FALLS GALENA, ILLINOIS

Very little information can be found about this Thunder Bay Falls in Galena, Illinois. Thank goodness for my talkative husband. I have always called him Mayor Bob because he talks to everyone. We were ready to give up on finding a wheelchair accessible waterfall in Illinois until a fellow camper told us about this small town in the northwest corner of Illinois named Galena. We found one person in the town that knew of the waterfall. It is a gorgeous secret.

ACCESSIBILITY: A gravel path leads directly from the parking area. Without help from my husband, the gravel would make maneuvering a wheelchair difficult, but not impossible. Two paths to the front of the Falls; one directly in front of the Fall and one at a higher level in front of the Fall.

TYPE: The Falls is a cascading spillway from Lake Galena.

DIRECTIONS: 7998 W Glen Hollow Rd Galena, IL 61036 Turn off of US 20 onto Glen Hollow Road. Follow that winding road to the parking area. The Falls is located approximately 2 miles on Glen Hollow Road on the right hand side of the road.

Lewis Falls is one of hundreds of waterfalls in Yellowstone National Park, yellowstone.net. 700,000 visitors enter the south entrance gate of Yellowstone. Yellowstone National Park is the oldest USA national park covering 3,472 square miles. We camped at Lewis Lake campground.

ACCESSIBILITY-Sidewalks lead from roadside parking lots on each side of the Lewis River bridge.

TYPE-Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps. The falls height is approximately 30 feet.

Willow Falls - Willow River State Park, Wisconsin

DESCRIPTION: Willow Falls is a 45 foot cascading waterfall located in Willow River State Park northeast of Hudson, Wisconsin.

ACCESSIBILITY: The falls are reachable by several different trails. The trails are accessible; however, they aren't easily accessible. The shortest trail is on a 1/4 mile paved walking path; however, it is a steep trail. The trail we took to the waterfalls was grassy in spots, deep gravel in other spots, then other spots had gouged out muddy areas. My husband and step-son took turns pushing my wheelchair over this terrain. I could have never successfully mastered the feat alone. When leaving the falls, we took the third trail. This trail was about two miles, but, a bit smoother. It was a dirt path, but well-worn because this path was used more frequently by the many people who visited the fall each day. Even though the trails left little-to-be-desired, the nature was worth the travel.

A sturdy bridge traversed the 100-foot wide waterfall. A parking fee is payable upon entering the park.

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS - PROVO, UTAH

DESCRIPTION - Bridal Veil Falls is a 607 foot tall, double cataract fall in Provo Canyon, Utah. Until 2008 the tramway was heralded as the steepest aerial tramway in the world, but the cables were cut. The falls can be seen in several scenes in the 1982 movie Savannah Smiles. A year-round stream of water surges from a narrow point at the top from several springs.

ACCESSIBILITY - Picnic tables are available in the park under shade trees and close to the falls. Paved paths make the short trek to the falls easy and casual. Bikers and skateboarders of all ages use the wide path for exercise as well.
