CUBE: «There is no conspiracy, nobody is
in charge, big brother is not watching you.»
Well, this is not entirely true…

We are all part of the system. But there are a few people – the metaphorical (and actual?) 1% – that have much more control over the steering wheel of the ship. And it happens to be that those people are not the people with the big picture in mind but the greedy, angry, scared people. Scared of loosing control. Because if you are too greedy and not responsible, there is reason to be scared.
On the other hand there are still too many people that don't care. That are blind, numb, too poor or believe in idiot compassion or are boomeritis slaves. But a big part of the people lately began to wake up… and those people, those 99%, started to occupy the ship's bridge now.

The first step out of the misery is to take radically responsibility for one's own life and actions. Not closing your eyes anymore but waking up and trying to see the big picture. The second step is to not rest silent anymore but to step forward and look for others that take responsibility. Then you start acting up, occupying the important material and mind spaces. Being the 99%, then you redistribute the power corresponding to how responsible people are and how much one can actually grab the big picture, how much people get done instead of talking and making empty promises and how much people are looking actively for good solutions instead of blocking them and how educated people are instead of if they have accidentally found oil in there territory.

The negative way to describe it has been done already in 1997 in the scene of the motion picture «Cube» where our situation was described pretty exactly out of a negative point of view:

The characters contemplate why they're in the cube and what its purpose is.

The following scene is out of the movie «300», the last fight of the Spartans. To take it as a role model literally would be a foolish thing I believe. The messenger can never be the principal target. To punish a messenger for merely transmitting a message is naive. To bring your queen in even greater danger by your behavior is not very wise. The film is soaked by a strong SDi (definition in german/definition in english) red energy. To follow a dogmatic law, ‹wanderer, if you come to Sparta, report thither that you have seen me lying here, as the law commanded›, an inflexible law without reflexion into fatality instead of finding creative solutions is pathetic and plain stupid. And the showing of this film does not in any way mean, I endorse hate against persians, in contrary: our culture owes a whole lot to the persian culture (and vice versa)!

But there is another way to read the following takes. A metaphorical one. Leonidas thinks and sees very clearly. The messenger is not merely a messenger, he threatens Leonidas in front of his queen with his own words. He tries to violate Sparta before the battle has begun. Politricks… He tries to violate Leonidas psychologically threatening to rape him and his people if they don't submit. He seems nice at first, but his fake acting becomes obvious very quickly. Leonidas does not let himself be seduced by the snakes whisper. He analyzes correctly and responds authentically and truthfully. If you cannot change a situation and the situation is grim, face it! Take it! Get whatever you can out of it. Never believe politicians words. Believe their deeds. How many politicians hold on to their promises given in their election campaigns? Well, that should set the precedent for their payment later on. Not their preliminary words. Not words at all should be awarded. Only actions. Especially with politicians.

Blocher is back. Vier Jahre nach seiner Abwahl am 12. September 2007 als Bundesrat ist Christoph Blocher wieder zurück auf dem nationalen, politischen Parkett. Im Kanton Zürich kandidiert er sowohl für National- als auch Ständerat.

Was uns zu der wichtigen Frage bringt: Wieso wurde Blocher schon wieder so erfolgreich und überwältigend abgewählt? Ist das schon wieder vergessen gegangen? Wissen wir es überhaupt so genau? Lag es vielleicht an seinem selbstlosen Einsatz, seiner unermüdlichen Arbeit und seiner charismatischen Präsenz als Nationalrat wie in einem früheren Beitrag dargestellt?

Oder liegt es vielleicht daran, dass er sehr viel Arbeit hat und sich eher um andere Geschäfte kümmern muss(te) wie zum Beispiel Zünder Lieferungen für Panzerabwehrwaffen durch die Ems-Patvag AG nach Brasilien oder von Airbag-Zündern – die sich laut Hersteller Webpage auch für Minen eignen – nach Singapur?

Oder dass nachtragende Leute sich an damals erinnern, als er gute Kontakte zum Apartheid Regime pflegte, dass Blocher mit seinem Asa-Bulletin tatkräftig unterstütze? Oder in der Geschichte der Ems Chemie auch die Anstellung von Ex-Nazis historisch verbürgt ist. Aber das kann fast nicht sein, denn das darf ja keiner öffentlich schreiben. Und nicht drauf hinweisen. Zumindest nicht in den grossen Medien… Und das ist ja auch alter Käse. Heute gibt es keinen Zusammenhang mehr zwischen rechtsaussen Politik beziehungsweise Ansichten und der SVP und Blocher, naaaain…

Oder sein mangel hafter Umgang bei bedeutenden Interessenkonflikten? Zum Beispiel, wenn es um Waffenexport-Entscheidungen geht wie Explosivzünder Lieferungen der Patvag oder Sprengstoff-Komponenten der Schweizerischen Sprengstofffabrik AG, eines Spin-off Unternehmens der Ems Chemie?

Oder lag es eher daran, dass er sich nicht in eine Konkordanz fügen konnte? Dass er regelmässig aus dem Bundesratskollegium ausscherte? Oder dass er als Bundesrat sehr, sehr mässig wahr?

Wir erinnern uns: Kurz vor der verdienten Ruhepause wurde Blocher mit Schimpf und Schande abgewählt. Die Hintergründe hat das Schweizer Fernsehen in einem sehr guten DOK-Film festgehalten:

sondern mindestens genauso spannend wie ein Krimi:

Aber wer weiss… Persönlich finde ich schon, Blocher hat zu oft zu krasse
Führer Allüren. Und die Wortwahl habe ich hier sehr bewusst, sehr genau
gewählt. Demgegenüber ist Viktor dann also doch viel lustiger:

In meinen Beiträgen Sexfilme (1) und Sexfilme (2) habe ich schon über Filme berichtet, die meines Erachtens auf eine gesunde Weise mit Sex umgehen. Inzwischen habe ich noch zwei weitere erotische Filme gefunden, die mir gefallen: Die Träumer von Bernardo Bertolucci und Swimming Pool von François Ozon. Auch diese beiden Filme dienen schlecht als Porno. Dennoch warten sie beide neben einer guten Story mit viel Erotik auf, die diese Bezeichnung verdient.

Die Träumer (Bernardo Bertolucci)

Der US-amerikanische Student Matthew, der im Paris des Jahres 1968 noch niemanden kennt, begegnet vor der Cinémathèque française dem französischen Geschwisterpaar Isabelle und Théo. Als deren Eltern in den Urlaub fahren, verfügen sie über die Wohnung und laden Matthew ein, zu ihnen zu ziehen. Die kinoverrückte Gruppe besucht Vorführungen in der Cinémathèque, bis diese wegen studentischer Unruhen eingestellt werden. Während die Proteste sich steigern, verlassen die drei kaum noch ihre Wohnung. Das Trio genießt stattdessen das Zusammensein, spielt Filmszenen nach, und allmählich entwickelt sich zwischen ihnen auch eine erotische Spannung…

Swimming Pool (François Ozon)

Sarah Morton ist Schriftstellerin in England, schreibt Krimis und ist mit ihrem Leben nicht sehr zufrieden. Sie nimmt dankend eine Einladung ihres Verlegers und Freundes an, zu seiner abgelegenen Villa in Frankreich zu fahren, um dort allein an ihrem neuen Roman zu schreiben.

Überraschenderweise trifft am zweiten Tag die junge Frau Julie ein. Sarah ist empört, weil sie gehofft hatte, Ruhe zu finden. Julie gibt sich als Tochter von Sarahs Verleger aus.

Of course, the following statements have nothing to do with journalism. Least with ‹professional› or even ‹scientific› journalism. They do not only misrepresent the truth in one way or the other, they are partially outright lies. There was not even a basic factcheck of most of those papers it seems, just copying their fellow journals… Can you detect the errors in the following quotes?

The above quotes sadly illustrate the catastrophic shape of much of our old mainstream media. They prove what we suspected for a long time already: our old mainstream media are dead. What we see here is not journalism much less ‹scientific journalism›. Instead of focussing on the really important things and news they continue dirty smearing and scream about less important sidetracks.

wrapped in blankets and laid in a pickup bed to be taken for burial. A State
Department cable obtained by WikiLeaks quotes the U.N. investigator of
extrajudicial killings as saying an autopsy showed the residents of the
house had been handcuffed and shot in the head, including children under
the age of 5. McClatchy obtained the photo from a resident when the

But why would they write such unreflected rubbish? Even well known newspapers like The Guardian, The Huffington Post or Wired join in to that fairytale saga… The answer is simple: fear. Fear of Wikileaks. Of Wikileaks' perfectly working concept. While most of the printed newspapers struggle to survive, Wikileaks delivers top sustainable information, knowledge and news. For free nota bene. And not only survives but strives, handling several ongoing law suits while continuing to rock the headlines of the worlds most renowned journals.
It's pure jaleousy in the face of extinction. Extinction of the news world and our 'old mainstream media' as we knew them. Welcome to the world of new media.

Having this said let's put some facts in more proportionate perspective shall we:

Who lost control of the cables?

The answer lies in the question: who do the cables belong to? Who generated them and who controlled them and who prevented them from being disseminated in public? This simple question clears the view on the truth in an amazing way. Truth being defined as ‹the tenthousand things as they are› (in contrast to single perspectives on the truth). So, it was not Wikileaks that lost control of the cables in the first place, it was the American government. They not only failed to protect their data and the individuals mentioned in that data but also to control the procedures of handling this data in secret. Wikileaks in contrary did want to publish the cables from the beginning on.
What is true however is, that Wikileaks wanted to publish the cables in a responsible way without endangering innocent individuals that were dragged into that matter without good reason. But Wikileaks also clearly stated that it did intend to reveal the names of persons that are in the public interest or of persons or groups that acted in a clearly illegal or reckless way (Wikileaks in a tweet clearly condemned what it called ‹cable cooking›). In that regard Wikileaks would have prefered the publishing of only the redacted cables. But if forced to choose between a nonredacted publication and no publication at all Wikileaks might have chosen the publication of the non redacted cables, who knows?

How does David Leigh know? It is highly improbable that this is true as the

file was hours before floating around the internet and Cryptome.org had published

the file z.gpg as well as the password for everybody to see.

Did Wikileaks ‹accidentally› release ‹dangerous› unredacted cables?
Wikileaks just did what reason dictates in such a situation: the unredacted cables suddenly began to spread wildly and widely in the internet. So it was nothing but common sense to publish them for all to download and review instead of having them controlled by just some hundred unknown individuals first. So the publication was by no means ‹accidental› but well considered and even democratically voted for. It can be suggested that they were also not very dangerous for any individuals anymore as the concerned have been warned long ago by the American government. In the end only history will show. Until now nobody has proven hurt or even killed by the sole fact of the publication of the cables. This stands in very sharp contrast to 40'000 civilian (!) dead in the iraq war.

The unredacted cables were published in public long before
Wikileaks decided to do it. For example here on PirateBay
on the 6th of February 2011.

Or here on Cryptome with all the explanations you needed on
first September 2011, quite a few days before Wikileaks
released them themselves!

Did Wikileaks knowingly publish the unredacted cables file z.gpg in question?

No. They gave this file to one or several media partners of theirs. Some of those media ‹partners› further disseminated that file against the will of Wikileaks and also in betrayal of the trust that Wikileaks put in them. The Guardianistas for example gave the complete unredacted cable file to the New York Times.

And another person had the unredacted cable file it seems: Daniel Domscheit-Berg who left WikiLeaks taking the contents of the WikiLeaks server with them, which included the encrypted file. In December a part of the data Domscheit-Berg had taken with him was returned to Wikileaks. The journal Wired explains: «Wikileaks supporters subsequently released an archive of the data that Domscheit-Berg had returned, as a public service to provide readers with access to everything WikiLeaks had previously published. But among the documents was the encrypted file containing the cables.»
It seems for safety reasons usually the unredacted cable file was copied and encrypted with a new password. That way each of the media partners had only one password different from the password of the original file and all other media's passwords. If that file or the password would appear in public, Wikileaks would know which organisation leaked the file. Now the one minor thing that can be reproached to Wikileaks is that Julian Assange gave the Guardian access to the original file encrypted with the original password. However in itself this is no problem yet. As long as only one organisation has this file and Wikileaks were able to proove that its own file was never leaked or disseminated it still is obvious which media partner leaked the file. ~~If Wikileaks can proove that its own file was never spread then the organisation responsible for the publication of the z.gpg file is The Guardian.~~ But as the Guardian at this point of time had already given that original file to others it was already out there and it is probably impossible to prove through who the file was publicly published in the end, WikiLeaks, the Guardian, the New York Times or even another entity like for example journalist Heather Brooks who gave a second copy (with the same password?) of the file to the Guardian.

Is Wikileaks responsable for the publication of the password of the public z.gpg file?

As far as I know Wikileaks has never published any password for any encrypted files publicly. Rumors have it that Julian Assange gave the password to David Leigh of the Guardian one day as one of their media partners. Fact is however, that David Leigh and Luke Harding published the password in question: «ACollectionOfDiplomaticHistorySince_1966_ToThe_PresentDay#» together with the subheading «Assange's 58-character password» in their book «Wikileaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy» not only in the body text, no, but as a chapter heading in full effect. Here is a copy of the page I'm talking about:

In the follow up David Leigh and the Guardian justified themselves: «In a statement included in its news story on the documents' release, the Guardian denied that any information included in the book led to the documents' release.» (cnet) Well, maybe not to the ‹documents' release› but to the release of its decryption key which is even more harmful! Doesn't the misleading wordplay of the above statement resemble a helpless lie of an 8 year old boy justifying an unreflected, stupid prank? Except you would take David Leigh for a grown up. Well, ‹grown up› doesn't necessarily have to be the same as ‹mature› as we all know.
«Another Guardian journalist (Luke Harding) — who once worked for WikiLeaks — said that Assange was to blame, alleging that the 40-year-old Australian had recycled an old password when he republished the encrypted data later.» (DailyMail) Mmh. Maybe ‹recycling› an old password is not best practice but it has by far not the same consequences as publishing that password openly in a book while describing it as such. And if you say Assange «republished the encrypted data later» do you mean by that Mr. Assange himself published not for the first time the complete file with the unredacted cables openly in the internet for everybody to see or download before you (the Guardian) gave the encrypted file plus password to the New York Times and others? Do you have proof for that claim? Or is it what it looks like: Just a plain stupid remark without any proof whatsoever. So what kind of comment is that, Mr. Harding? A little bit like an 8 year old boy justifying an unreflected, stupid prank, isn't it?

But Julian Assange hits the nail on its head in a tweet on the Wikileaks account:

Welcome to the death of our old mainstream media

Quite conscious of probably feeding the trolls, let me express my concerns in form of some questions to the old mainstream media: Are you really convinced that a product – however cheap it is produced, however speedy it is produced, however shiny it looks and thick it presents itself – is worth anything if it is empty of (relevant) content? Do you really believe that «scientific journalism» is some futuristic, hippy freak idea totally unrelated to our present times? Can you still uphold that Wikileaks brought nothing new but some hilarious, funny stories about some unimportant celebrities? Do you still feel that people love to buy your newspapers for a lot of money while (maybe?) thinking that Wikileaks is too stupid to ask money for their publications? Might it be that people are too stupid to recognize your smears, your personal vendettas, your pity subservience to the politically and economically powerful, pushing Wikileaks stories to the back of your pages and spelling http://www.wikileaks.org not correctly once throughout your whole newspaper? Could it be, that you are not scared by all this at all but in contrary: welcome it? Welcome your own doom as a kind of necrophilic relief? As a kind of salvation?

One thing its for sure after seeing following video: In prison a person like Bradley Manning is a complete waste for humanity. Putting Bradley Manning into custody instead of supporting him as a human being would be a serious, ferocious crime of our society.
Bradley Manning is attested a more than average intelligence by seemingly very intelligent people. Bradley Manning has an excellent computer knowledge. Bradley Manning has high ethics, is good-hearted, empathetic and last but not least: Bradley Manning has manners. Those are exactly the human beings we need right now! Continuing to mistreat this young man and even worse: putting him into prison, where he sure would be one of the first being mass-raped, is one of the scariest attests of humanity's grave illness leading ultimately to the danger of it's own extinction. And it's also up to you to not let this last sentence become a (self-fulfilling) prophecy.

The Danger of Censoring Child Pornography

Child pornography is not always bad. Large-scale censorship and sexual abuse of children however are. They are highly unethical and should both be taken care of. In this essay I will explain some serious problems with censorship taking the example of child pornography.

TorrentFreak describes itself as a «place where ‹breaking news›, ‹BitTorrent› and ‹copyright› collide». They strongly advocate the file sharing protocol ‹BitTorrent› and other peer-to-peer technologies and question censorship and certain types of copyright protection.

In their article they reproach the copyright industry to advocate large-scale online censorship by deliberately abusing childporn’s bad image. And this not because they have primarily ethical concerns about child abuse (but rather financial gains in mind?). And by expanding censorship in a second step to file sharing they are about to try – through the ‹backdoor› so to speak – to prevent illegal file sharing and pirating which is their real goal.

Now there is no question that BitTorrent has already proven to be an excellent tool for file sharing. And file sharing by itself is nothing unethical. In contrary, it is a great tool for knowledge exchange, resource economics and crowdsourcing for example. However the copyright industry observes with fury, that there is not only legal sharing but to a certain extend also sharing of copyrighted and pirated material.

The huge problem is that the introduction of large-scale censorship brings a lot of serious problems with it. One being that the abuse of children for porn is definitely not solved in the least. Therefore the strategy of the copyright industry is dangerous on different levels. This essay does not deny that there is some problematic file sharing of copyrighted material. But it tries to explain in simple terms why large-scale censorship of child pornography does not solve the problem but introduces much more serious problems on a whole new level…

THE UNDENIABLE FACTS

There exist pedophiles. This is a fact we can and will not change. Ever. Being pedophile also is not a crime. It is no crime to have a certain sexual preference. Sexually abusing children on the other hand is a very ferocious crime. It’s of utmost importance to keep those two things apart.

Another fact is: as long as there are pedophiles there will most probably be a demand for child pornography. And where a demand is, there is usually also a supply. Data can be exchanged in a lot of ways. And not all have to be exchanges over the internet. You could for example directly swap self burned compact discs or USB-Sticks or even harddiscs and whole servers for that matter. One could also create bluetooth or wireless networks for special purposes. Imagine closed wireless hot spots in places where pedophiles meet. Or create and promote a website amongst pedophiles that publishes each month a random, artificial codeword standing for ‹childporn›, for example ‹Cauliflowerblossoms›. And then you could publish encrypted childporn under the codename «Cauliflowerblossoms» and every pedophile would easily find it no matter how strong your internet filters are. «Circumventing censorship» results in 6’200’000 hits on Google. «Circumventing internet filters» yields 2’000’000 hits. Probably you could also go with an anonymizer tool to servers in foreign jurisdictions, order your films online and let them be sent by snailmail. You see, one has not to be a specialist in the field of bypassing censorship. There exist most probably dozens of ways to exchange files avoiding internet filters…

It becomes quickly painfully obvious that large-scale censorship would punish a lot of netizens because of the misbehavior of only a few criminals. It’s purpose would be pretty much what has been described by some people as a kind of ‹blindfold› that enables the normal internet user to ignore childporn while the childporn market would continue to flourish… Censorship would support the ignorance of child abuse without preventing it!

As censorship and internet filters can easily be circumvented it appears safe to conclude that they will not make the childporn market disappear either. Just the distribution channels would change. What strategy then would effectively help preventing children from being sexually abused? How would we have to apply a possible strategy to actually work? And what should we do with people that still engage in improper behavior?

WHAT STRATEGY THEN WOULD EFFECTIVELY HELP PREVENTING CHILDREN FROM BEING SEXUALLY ABUSED?
Strategies against child abuse would obviously have to deal with two major problem areas: The abuse of children by pedophiles and the abuse of children by the porn industry.

But the pure demonization of pedophiles as it is happening right now will most probably not keep children from being abused. Why? Because even the most severe prosecution and punishment won’t override our natural, strong sexual drive. The sexual instinct is – much the same as our survival instinct – one of men’s strongest compulsions.

The best solution would most probably be to replace children through actors or avatars. In real as well as in virtual life. And as the health and wellbeing of kids has preference over the image, that sex with children is (correctly seen as) abnormal, this could be a valid solution.

What means ‹replacing children through actors or avatars›? It could mean for example that there is an official offer of prostitutes, telemarketers etc. dressing and or behaving like children as a professional service to pedophiles. At this point let’s repeat again, that this makes only sense in the overall context with the best safety for children in mind as the overriding argument for ‹sick› behavior!

Child pornography could also be drawn as sexually explicit comics and animations. This is the case with japanese hentai, 18-kin, seijin manga and ero anime. Or it could be animated in 3D modeling programs the way the films ‹Toy Story› or ‹Final Fantasy› were. There could even be children residents created in virtual worlds like Linden Lab’s ‹Second Life› or other metaverses that enable a live interaction between two characters.

Important with the above mentioned strategy is to realize that this rather simple idea solves a quite complex problem leading to a win-win-win situation. It would not only be of a big advantage for children but also for pedophiles and even the commercial porn industry!

HOW WOULD WE HAVE TO APPLY A POSSIBLE STRATEGY TO ACTUALLY WORK
Of course an essay like this one can only serve as an initiate inspiration but in no way as a detailed strategy paper. There would have several steps to be taken before this strategy can work properly in full effect. Steps for example like spreading, explaining and evaluating the idea, developing a detailed action plan, conducting scientific studies, educating all parties involved and changing the legal framework. And also precautions to rule out a backfiring of the strategy. Interesting would be if the chance of actually acting out sexual fantasies in real life increases or lowers after consumption of virtual porn or if the showing of child pornography to young children could be abused to convince them to engage in similar behavior. How to prevent those scenarios and other details can be worked out by the respective professionals. One should definitely not have naive expectations. A realistic, critical view on the strategy is necessary and does not declassify it, in contrary, it validates it!

This being said, the above described strategy should probably be based on four simultaneous actions: prevention, education, care and repression.

FOUR PILLARS: PREVENTION, EDUCATION, CARE AND REPRESSION
No doubt, a great deal of pressure could be taken off of pedophiles by providing valid possibilities to legally live their sexuality. This pressure release could psychologically be used to advertise legal, easily accessible distribution channels by word-of-mouth recommendation in private, discrete ways not too disturbing to the general public. One such channel could – ironically – be a special peer-to-peer network for pedophiles based on BitTorrent in which they could trade, exchange, advertise and order ‹legal child pornography› meaning child pornography not involving any real children in its production. This kind of pornography should not only be internationally legalized as an accompanying measure but actively advertised amongst pedophile circles. The effect would likely be a substancial part of the child porn industry switching from risky, low turnover ‹real child› porn to risk-free high turnover ‹avatar child porn› production with quickly increasing turnover because of significantly lower security, production and distribution cost.

Beside the legalizing of ‹artificial› child pornography all other known supports and treatments to help pedophiles should be kept alive: Cognitive behavioral therapy («relapse prevention»), behavioral interventions, pharmacological interventions…

But what should happen to pedophiles and porn industry that continue abusing children for their aims? Here comes our fourth strategic pillar into play: repression. Of course also negative motivation is a legit and strong way to convince all parties to engage in more lawful than unlawful action. That’s why draconian extradition laws and penalties should be imposed on all people still engaging in producing, distributing or buying ‹real child› porn in combination with the other measures mentioned above. For the success of the overall strategy it is very important to understand that all measures have to be realized in the right spot at the right time.

EPILOG. FOR ALL YOU INSPIRED...
People propagating the idea of this essay should go about very careful and delicately. For opposition it is all too easy to single out one argument of the solution and make it look like a real evil minded program.

Still, very similar strategies have already been proven to work like for example in drug politics. Why shouldn’t it work here, too? Hopefully with the result of an augmented quality of life for pedophiles and last but not least an enhanced safety of our children and their children. <<<

Abuse of children and pornography are not only both topics that are very private and taboo but also very contrary to each other: one is about extreme suffering, one about extreme pleasure. For reasons of piety and respect, the following video and picture were not incorporated into the above essay.

The following film is not drawn in the conventional way. The figures are animated. No real actors ever played in this film. No real adults. No real children. Just animation. It illustrates what can be done, how realistic figures and movements can be rendered today. The porn industry is no small industry. Pedophiles could be a fresh client segment. I don't say this in a condescending way, in contrary. It could and should be a win-win-win situation: Pedophiles get porn to be at least partially capable of living their sexual preference, the industry gets new business and by also raising repression quite a bit, children – and this is the most important part and has therefore to be strongly insured and secured – get safety from harm. Panic on the streets of London.

I’m huddled in the front room with some shell-shocked friends, watching my city burn. The BBC is interchanging footage of blazing cars and running street battles in Hackney, of police horses lining up in Lewisham, of roiling infernos that were once shops and houses in Croydon and in Peckham. Last night, Enfield, Walthamstow, Brixton and Wood Green were looted; there have been hundreds of arrests and dozens of serious injuries, and it will be a miracle if nobody dies tonight. This is the third consecutive night of rioting in London, and the disorder has now spread to Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol and Birmingham. Politicians and police officers who only hours ago were making stony-faced statements about criminality are now simply begging the young people of Britain’s inner cities to go home. Britain is a tinderbox, and on Friday, somebody lit a match. How the hell did this happen? And what are we going to do now?

In the scramble to comprehend the riots, every single commentator has opened with a ritual condemnation of the violence, as if it were in any doubt that arson, muggings and lootings are ugly occurrences. That much should be obvious to anyone who is watching Croydon burn down on the BBC right now. David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, called the disorder 'mindless, mindless'. Nick Clegg denounced it as 'needless, opportunistic theft and violence'. Speaking from his Tuscan holiday villa, Prime Minister David Cameron – who has finally decided to return home to take charge - declared simply that the social unrest searing through the poorest boroughs in the country was "utterly unacceptable." The violence on the streets is being dismissed as ‘pure criminality,’ as the work of a ‘violent minority’, as ‘opportunism.’ This is madly insufficient. It is no way to talk about viral civil unrest. Angry young people with nothing to do and little to lose are turning on their own communities, and they cannot be stopped, and they know it. Tonight, in one of the greatest cities in the world, society is ripping itself apart.

Violence is rarely mindless. The politics of a burning building, a smashed-in shop or a young man shot by police may be obscured even to those who lit the rags or fired the gun, but the politics are there. Unquestionably there is far, far more to these riots than the death of Mark Duggan, whose shooting sparked off the unrest on Saturday, when two police cars were set alight after a five-hour vigil at Tottenham police station. A peaceful protest over the death of a man at police hands, in a community where locals have been given every reason to mistrust the forces of law and order, is one sort of political statement. Raiding shops for technology and trainers that cost ten times as much as the benefits you’re no longer entitled to is another. A co-ordinated, viral wave of civil unrest across the poorest boroughs of Britain, with young people coming from across the capital and the country to battle the police, is another.

Months of conjecture will follow these riots. Already, the internet is teeming with racist vitriol and wild speculation. The truth is that very few people know why this is happening. They don’t know, because they were not watching these communities. Nobody has been watching Tottenham since the television cameras drifted away after the Broadwater Farm riots of 1985. Most of the people who will be writing, speaking and pontificating about the disorder this weekend have absolutely no idea what it is like to grow up in a community where there are no jobs, no space to live or move, and the police are on the streets stopping-and-searching you as you come home from school. The people who do will be waking up this week in the sure and certain knowledge that after decades of being ignored and marginalised and harassed by the police, after months of seeing any conceivable hope of a better future confiscated, they are finally on the news. In one NBC report, a young man in Tottenham was asked if rioting really achieved anything:

"Yes", said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?"

"Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."
Eavesdropping from among the onlookers, I looked around. A dozen TV crews and newspaper reporters interviewing the young men everywhere.

There are communities all over the country that nobody paid attention to unless there had recently been a riot or a murdered child. Well, they’re paying attention now.

Tonight in London, social order and the rule of law have broken down entirely. The city has been brought to a standstill; it is not safe to go out onto the streets, and where I am in Holloway, the violence is coming closer. As I write, the looting and arson attacks have spread to at least fifty different areas across the UK, including dozens in London, and communities are now turning on each other, with the Guardian reporting on rival gangs forming battle lines. It has become clear to the disenfranchised young people of Britain, who feel that they have no stake in society and nothing to lose, that they can do what they like tonight, and the police are utterly unable to stop them. That is what riots are all about.

Riots are about power, and they are about catharsis. They are not about poor parenting, or youth services being cut, or any of the other snap explanations that media pundits have been trotting out: structural inequalities, as a friend of mine remarked today, are not solved by a few pool tables. People riot because it makes them feel powerful, even if only for a night. People riot because they have spent their whole lives being told that they are good for nothing, and they realise that together they can do anything – literally, anything at all. People to whom respect has never been shown riot because they feel they have little reason to show respect themselves, and it spreads like fire on a warm summer night. And now people have lost their homes, and the country is tearing itself apart.

Noone expected this. The so-called leaders who have taken three solid days to return from their foreign holidays to a country in flames did not anticipate this. The people running Britain had absolutely no clue how desperate things had become. They thought that after thirty years of soaring inequality, in the middle of a recession, they could take away the last little things that gave people hope, the benefits, the jobs, the possibility of higher education, the support structures, and nothing would happen. They were wrong. And now my city is burning, and it will continue to burn until we stop the blanket condemnations and blind conjecture and try to understand just what has brought viral civil unrest to Britain. Let me give you a hint: it ain’t Twitter.

I’m stuck in the house, now, with rioting going on just down the road in Chalk Farm. Ealing and Clapham and Dalston are being trashed. Journalists are being mugged and beaten in the streets, and the riot cops are in retreat where they have appeared at all. Police stations are being set alight all over the country. This morning, as the smoke begins to clear, those of us who can sleep will wake up to a country in chaos. We will wake up to fear, and to racism, and to condemnation on left and right, none of which will stop this happening again, as the prospect of a second stock market clash teeters terrifyingly at the bottom of the news reports. Now is the time when we make our choices. Now is the time when we decide whether to descend into hate, or to put prejudice aside and work together. Now is the time when we decide what sort of country it is that we want to live in. Follow the #riotcleanup hashtag on Twitter. And take care of one another. <<<

Everyone and no one wants to save the world

When the world extended to one's surrounding hills and mountains and over them was only legend, saving the world was approchable and a natural activity to all of independent character.

You do not need to justify the possession of these noble instincts. Such attributes are normally distributed. You have a constellation of these attributes and that makes you who you are. Recognise that the substantial ones are invariant.

You must satisfy your invariant instincts or you will be at odds with your own character. It is only when we are not at odds with our basic makeup that we can find life meaningful.

Julian Assange way, way back in time…

To exercise your instinct for saving the world, requires saving what you perceive to be the world.

Being modern, educated and wordly, the world you perceive is immense and this is disempowering compared to the valley world of your ancestors where your feelings were forged and where saving 10 people saved 10% of the "world"'s population.

Here lays the difficulty in actualising your character. Your perception is of a world so vast that that you can not envisage your actions making a meaningful difference.

People try to fool themselves and others into believing that one can ``think globally and act locally', however to anyone with a sense of proportion (not most people, btw) thinking globaly makes acting locally seem to be a marginal activity. It's not setting the world to rights.

To meaningfully interact with the world, you have to either constrain your perception of what it is back to valley proportions by eschewing all global information (most of us here have engaged on just the opposite course which is what has provoked this discussion), losing your sense of perspective, or start seriously engaging with the modern perception of the world.

That latter path can be hard to find, because it is only satisfied by creating ideas or inventions that have a global impact. Perhaps I have found one, and there's others out there, but for most people of your character a combination of eschewing knowledge of those parts of the world they can't change, and robust engagement with the parts they can is probably optimal.

Also the ONE is just a channel, a medium, between the worlds. Uniting them as one.

Life reloaded. Can no ONE safe the world?
We all – also you – self-actualize time and time again. It's called 'maturity'.

Do not be concerned about when one is to do good, who defines good, etc. Act in the way you do because to do otherwise would to be at odds would to be at odds with yourself. Being on a path true to your character carries with it a state of flow, where the thoughts about your next step come upon waking, unbidden, but welcome.

I support similarly minded people, not because they are moral agents, but because they have common cause with my own feelings and dreams. <<<

A: Sie haben Hans Fehr zusammengeschlagen auf dem Weg zur Albisgüetli-Tagung...

D: *leicht ironisch* Waaas? Auf offener Strasse so richtig Gewalt angetan?

A: Wart, hier steht: «verprügelt» beziehungsweise «leicht an der Stirn verletzt»...

D: Cool.

A: Äh, wie bitte??

D: Ich sagte: Cool! Von mir aus hätten sie ihm 187 mal die Stahlkappe ins Gesicht rammen können.

A: Sag mal, spinnst du jetzt komplett?

D: Wieso? War es denn nicht Christopherus der sagte: «Drohungen gehören zur Politik» und seien «in den 80er Jahren noch schlimmer gewesen als heute»?

A: *sichtlich verärgert* Ja, aber Drohungen sind das eine, Gewaltanwendung das andere. Fehr wurde ganz praktisch verprügelt! Du solltest als reifer Erwachsener eigentlich dazu aufrufen, Drohungen und Gewalt in einer zivilisierten Gesellschaft zu unterlassen!

D: *mit verstellter stimme* Das kannst du vergessen. Diese Leute sind nicht aus meinen Kreisen. Deshalb kann ich sie auch nicht zu etwas aufrufen. *grinst hämisch*

A: Bist du jetzt völlig übergeschnappt oder was? Das waren linksautonome Radikale.

D: Soso, die Linken und die Netten sind plötzlich nicht mehr so nett? *lacht*

A: Mal echt, Diaboli, so kenne ich dich gar nicht. Ich finde das, was du da rauslässt ziemlich primitiv und erschreckend.

D: *dreht sich mit ernster miene zu advocatus* Weisst du was, mein Lieber, was ich grade
sagte meine ich todernst! Wer Wind sät wird Sturm ernten. Und die SVP hat sehr fleissig gesät! Entweder man ist konsequent und authentisch – oder man ist unglaubwürdig. Willkürlich die Meinung zu ändern ist nicht nur Verrat am eigenen Wort, sondern auch an seinen Jüngern und Wählern.
Sind es nicht gerade Bullies wie Fehr, Mörgeli und Heer, die oft einen längst nicht mehr zeitge- mässen Sozialdarwinismus befürworten? Ein Casparlitheater sozusagen von ‹andersgläubigen Armeeangehören› über ‹Kreationismus› bis zum ‹Neonazi-Marsch auf Bern›? Aber Achtung: ‹wortlos akzeptieren› heisst nach unseren Gesellschaftskonventionen ‹befürworten›.
Nein, ich hoffe, Fehr getraut sich am Albisgüetli-Öbigli ab jetzt nur noch durch den Hintereingang ins Schützenhaus!

A: *aufgeregt* Bist du jetzt völlig übergeschnappt oder was? Wenn Du so denkst und redest bist du keinen Deut besser als die, über die du dich beschwerst.

D: *mit fester stimme* Nein, im Gegenteil. Ich hatte auch einen Moment bis ich es begriffen habe:

Bei Inkonsequenz muss man konsequenterweise inkonsequent sein. Oder etwas einfacher for- muliert: Wenn ich hohe Werte wie Menschenrechte, Gewaltlosigkeit, Demokratie und sozialen Frieden vertrete wäre ich inkonsequent, wenn ich genau die Leute machen lasse, die diese Werte untergraben.

Das bedeutet nicht, dass man selber wieder zum Barbar werden muss mit Gewalt und Todesstrafe... Aber Bürger, die unsere hohen, gesellschaftlichen Werte verraten gehören sozial, kulturell und möglicherweise auch materiell zurechtgestutzt. Und zwar rapide und effizient. Leute auf dem nationalen oder gar internationalen Parkett sowieso.

A: Weisst du was, ich hoffe, die Herren der SVP verklagen dich wegen Verleumdung und Ehrverletzung.

D: Ich habe das Gefühl, Advocatus, auch du gehörst zu den Linken und Netten. Hier also noch zwei Gedanken an denen du gnagen kannst. Erstens: Meinst du, dass in Zukunft mehr Frauen in den oberen SVP-Etagen auftauchen weil sich ein paar mutige Damen gestern für Fehr eingesetzt haben und ihn womöglich vor Schlimmerem bewahrt haben? Ich glaube nicht!
Und hier noch einer: Stelle dir vor, Fehr wäre rollstuhlreif geschlagen worden. Meinst du, er würde dann alle Werte der Zürcher SVP immer noch so rigoros vertreten wie er das bis anhin getan hat? Ich bezweifle es. Wobei, ich bezweifle auch, dass ihr – du und Herr Fehr – euch wahr- haft in die Lage eines Behinderten hineinversetzen könnt. Und das obwohl das Schicksal jeden von uns, jeden – auch unverschuldet – täglich zum Invaliden machen könnte!
