I'm SO proud of my students' writing! They really are doing so great. I almost get teary eyed thinking about it and then I remember that even though they are ready for 2nd grade (and that makes me sad for them to not be in my class anymore).... summer break is almost here and I'm READY for that! ;)

Yes it's the end of the year and YES we are still writing, learning, and meeting standards in the CCSS!

We are just about finished reading Charlotte's Web for our read-a-loud and my kiddos are OBSESSED! They love it so much, that 3 of them checked it out of the library so they could re-read it. :) So cute! As we've been reading, we've been talking a lot about the different characters. I have been using Abby's Charlotte's Web unit a lot, too (that's where the picture cards came from)!

Then, I had my students decide out of Charlotte or Wilber, who was their favorite character. This was a *TOUGH* decision for many students! They wrote about that character and why they were their favorite (opinion and informative). Then, they made a simple paper-plate craft.

My hubby says I look "sexy". Um.. that's sweet and no you can't get out of doing the dishes just for saying that. ;)

9 Days Left...

Here's an end-of-year memory book I've been working on for my 5th graders. It will be great to use as a mini yearbook and a way for students to reflect and remember the all the things we've learned this year!

This is a 12 page document that has been formatted into a pamphlet style in order to save on paper costs. (I don't know about you, but our school is majorly low on paper right now!) When copied on both sides, and folded down the middle, this book will only use 3 pieces of paper per student.

Instagram Apps

With the success of Teacher Talk Tuesday (#teachertalktuesday on Instagram), I thought I'd show you a few of my favorite apps to make my pictures unique Instagram!

First up... you want to know how to do this?

It's one of my favorite apps called BubbleFrame. You can even add words to your pictures, if you'd like! There are also a lot of cute backgrounds to use.

Many of you wanted to be able to show a few pictures in one Instagram post, like this:

I use the app Frametastic, but really there are tons of great apps for this one!

Sometimes, photos I take on my phone, don't quite crop or fit like I want them to, so I use Whitagram. It's a great app, too!

Whitagram basically adds a white (or colored) border to your pictures to make them crop properly.

Rockin' Math Review Centers {Kindergarten CCSS Aligned}

Unfortunately our students know this too. My students came to school this week with a b-a-d case of summer fever!! While discussing said summer fever with my co-workers, I mentioned something about wanting my students to behave the way they know they should even when I wasn't looking.

And thus this poster was created...

Reviewing the WHOLE Common Core Math!

YES! That is just what we will do the last 2-3 weeks of school (review the whole CCSS math)! Because we don't have official standardized testing in 1st grade, I like to review the last 2 weeks of school to help my students remember what we learned and to get them ready for 2nd grade.

Here's what I've done (and it's taken me soooooooooo long to do- I even cried TWICE!!!!)... I have made a review center game for EVERY STANDARD in the 1st grade Common Core Math (some games cover multiple standards). I know... I am CRAZY! But, my students needed some fun ways to review and so I have been working on this for WEEKS. This would also be a GREAT review for your 2nd graders at the beginning of next year.

Mother's Day Writing Project {And Gift!}

Something about Mother's Day always seems to stress me out. As a teacher, I'm always searching for the perfect gift for my students to make for their own moms. This year I am super excited because I finally have a project that I think students and moms are going to love!

If you're looking for a fun and new Mother's Day gift idea, this heart-shaped book is a perfect option because it is a super cute and easy way to let your students' moms know how much they are loved. Also, this activity ties perfectly into the Common Core ELA writing standards for opinion writing!

There are 5 different cover choices. I included 2 different color combos, as well as 2 colored-ink saving options. The black and white outline can be printed onto scrapbook paper.

TGI...Saturday!

We had a super fun Saturday today!!

We met up with Lindsey {aka The Teacher Wife} and had a fabulous little lunch date at The Cheesecake Factory.

We also *had* to do some shopping while we were at the mall.

We all had fun at the buy-one-get-one-half-off sale at Francesca's.

And Natalie got some perfume and makeup at Sephora.

Overall, it was a great day! We loved chatting about all things blog related.

We're glad we all live so close together.

{We live within one hour of each other!}

Did you know...

We {Rachelle and Natalie} were sorority sisters in college!

We also did student government together!

We do not teach at the same school.

We live and teach about 20 minutes away from each other.

We've been blogging together for two and a half years.

We either email, text, or message each other {almost} every night.

We love getting together as often as possible.

Seeds and Plants GALORE!

This week was full of lots of science fun!!! We integrated some writing into this week, while learning about seeds!

This week we've watched lots of BrainPOP Jr. videos. Seriously.... if your school doesn't have a BrainPOP subscription, they totally should (It includes BrainPop, BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP ESL)! They are great to use to introduce or reinforce any topic. And the best part???? If you have a subscription, you can view all the videos on your iPad and it has the subtitles. So, I can use it for Listen to Reading during Daily 5.

We talked about how seeds spread and we read this book. I laugh every time I read the title. It just sounds so SCANDALOUS! :)

National Poetry Month

April might be halfway over already, but you still have time to celebrate National Poetry Month. My Poetry Pack is a perfect way to help you get started on teaching poetry!

It will walk your students trough 11 different types of poetry showing descriptions and examples of each.

At the end, students can collect all their poems in their own little poetry book.

And, before I go, I have a super sweet story to tell you all. My students have been working on their poems for a little while now and we've had many conversations about how poetry is great way to let your emotions out.

Yesterday morning when my students came to class they were all telling me about the tragedy in Boston. One of my 5th graders raised her hand and said, "Remember how you said that poetry is a good way to let people know how you feel? Well, can we write poems about how we feel about Boston?"

Such a sweet thought and great way for students to express their feelings of grief and sadness towards all those affected in Monday's bombings. Just another reason why I love my 5th graders. :)

iPad Teacher Club: Management

I thought I'd share a little song I teach my students when we first get the ipads out at the beginning of the year! Maybe you can use it. I also use Heidisongs great rules poster that you can find {here}.

If you have a student who is really struggling with following the expectations and NOTHING seems to work? What about a Technology Treat (aka... iPad time!)?

This behavior contract allows the student to earn stickers and once the chart is filled out, they can play the learning game on the ipad for 5-10 minutes. It WORKS!

My favorite app for them to play during this time is the Teach Me app. It is a paid app but it's SO worth it! I bought the 1st grade version and it's a bit too easy for my kiddos, but is great for my kiddos that need a great deal of intervention. Look into buying a grade above what you teach.

We are thrilled to share our *newish* blog design with you all. We wanted to keep our look the same, but add a few professional looking touches.

New Blogging Friends

I got to travel to California for my spring break and had such a fabulous time taking my two little kids to Disneyland for the first time! It was an incredible trip and I'm so sad that it's already over.

While in Anaheim, I got to meet up with one of our sweet blog followers, Stacey from Ray of Kindergarten Sunshine.

Stacey lives in Anaheim and teaches kindergarten at one of the inner city schools in LA. When she heard I was visiting the area, she invited me out to get some ice cream. We went to Joe's Italian Ice and had a wonderful time and ate some yummy galati. We spent the night talking about teaching, blogging, and Teachers Pay Teachers. We also found out we have a lot in common and continued talking about babies, church, and even fun things like cute iPhone covers.

(This cute girl let us try a bunch of the yummy flavors and then came out to take our picture.)

I just love the blogging world and love how it connects teachers from different parts of the country. Learning about different teaching styles, sharing curriculum ideas, and talking about student success is such a wonderful part of this teacher-blogging world and I'm so happy that I can be a part of it!!

(This picture is just too cute for me not to share. This is my adorable, almost-3-year-old, Camden. He LOVED Disneyland... can you tell?!)

Now... where should I vacation next?

Writing Conferences

So, my sweet friend Carmen asked if I had blogged about my writing conferences and I realized that I NEEDED to do that! So, this one is for you, Carmen!

Because I do Daily 5, I like to check their writing folders once a week and have a writing conference with my students. You might do something like this for writer's workshop. I'm doing guided reading during Daily 5, so I don't have writing conferences right then. I have writing conferences during their morning work (which is journals in my classroom), I meet with 5 students each day (2 minutes each). I like to do it QUICK and make their writing conference more about celebrating their writing than telling them what to work on.

Here's a pretend example of what the sheet looks like:

So.. basically my students write during work on writing and when they are finished, they put their finished page in the side of their 2-pocket folder that says "finished" (then they start a new one). If the bell rings before they finish, they stick it in the side pocket that says "unfinished".

Easy-Peasy-Lemon-Squeezy! When I'm ready to have a writing conference with them, I call them to my back table during morning work and I quickly read their pages. I remind them what goal they should have been working on and I make a new goal with them. I ALWAYS celebrate lots and lots. I really want to build confident writers!

Field Trip {Writing}

Yep! This is happening.... tomorrow! We are going on a field trip to a children's museum here in Salt Lake.

Yep. That's our schedule tomorrow! :)

My students are *BEYOND* excited. :) I know that when we get back to school tomorrow afternoon, they will want to tell me all about their favorite part... so I made this little writing activity.

This writing activity will be in the shape of a bus when you're all done!

There are 6 different writing inserts and each come with primary (handwriting) lines and regular lines.

iPad Tip - Guided Access

One of my co-workers taught me an iPad trick that has been SUPER helpful! It's called 'Guided Access' and prevents your students from exiting the educational app you want them to work on and going into other non-education apps.

Here's how it works:

This has been extreeeeemely helpful when letting my toddler play on my iPad and will also be very helpful for my students. My personal iPad is my classroom iPad, so I really don't want my students going into all my things or trying to buy something from my Amazon Wishlist (...or do I?!).

And Then I Brought a Rabbit to School...

AND IT WAS SO FUN! If you read my post from the other day, you'll know that we've been researching rabbits all week and at the end of the week, I wanted to bring in a bunny! Believe me... my student teacher and I were SUPER nervous about this little Bunny Foo Foo hopping around our classroom, but it was seriously a blast!

First, I put my students in groups so that they could research rabbits and fill out their graphic organizer:

The next day, we read lots of books about rabbits and we did a shared writing and wrote an informational piece together as a class:

Day #3, they took everything that they had learned and wrote their own informational writing:

Next, they made their cute paper-plate rabbits and I hung them up in the hall:

And there you have it! Every ONE of my students will be asking their parents for a pet rabbit! YIKES!

Rabbit Research for the Common Core

We are researching rabbits this week (all week) and guess what?!?!? I found someone to bring in a pet rabbit on Wednesday to surprise my students. I AM SO EXCITED! They are seriously going to scream (but hopefully not...because I don't want to scare the bunny). We are fitting in some major informational writing this week and that makes our Common Core hearts happy, happy, happy! (But don't worry, if you don't want to research rabbits, I've included blank sheets so you can research any animal!)

Spring Fever? NO WAY!

I'm doing this in my classroom again this year and it works like a CHARM!

Are your kiddos feeling the spring fever or are you the one going stir crazy!?

This management tip is used on our 1st grade team but will work in any classroom.

It's great for ~~springtime~~ spring fever.

You need 2 Easter baskets and plastic Easter eggs (you need double the amount of eggs as you have students...so if you have 25 students, you need 50 plastic Easter eggs). Can anyone say Dollar Tree?

In basket #1, you fill the eggs with the students' names (one name in each egg). In the other basket, you fill the eggs with strips of papers that have prize names on them.

Randomly throughout the day/week, pick a student to come and pick an egg out of the name basket. They open up the egg and read the name {or you can pick from the basket instead of having a student do it-I just like to involve everyone}. If that student is on task they get to pick an egg from the prize basket (If they are not on task, you just quietly put the egg back and the students know that someone that was picked was not on task). Here is a list of the prizes I giveaway. Some of them might not be applicable to you, but you can just leave those out.

Fancy Words and I'm No Cara Carroll

In the Language Standard of the Common Core (specifically the vocabulary and acquisition use), our students should be expanding their vocabulary!
So, last year I decided to use Fancy Words to introduce synonyms and the use of fancy vocabulary words. My students this year just loved it so much! They've been using their fancy words SO much lately. I'm almost sick of hearing the words humungous, spectacular, fantastic, and superb. :) Almost.

Of course, we start off reading Fancy Nancy to introduce Fancy Words (and we continue reading different Fancy Nancy books all week). Here are some fun things we did all week to work on our vocabulary acquisition (that's a fancy word for learning big words). P.S. that is a STEAL of a deal on a Fancy Nancy big book!

Believe me... I'm no CARA CARROLL (have you seen this girl's anchor charts? To die for!). I cannot make a cute anchor chart to save.my.life. Cara, can you give me some lessons????

After the book, we did a little craftivity. We took the words that we learned and made wands with them (of course I called them wizard wands for the boys and princess wands for the boys). They wrote their favorite fancy word on the star and drew a picture of the meaning of the word.

This is our Fancy Word Wall (also included in the packet). My students came up with *most* of those fancy words up there!

To make sure my students are applying what they've learned, I challenge them to use fancy words in their journals. And when they come up to conference with me after journal, if I see any fancy words used correctly, they get to circle them with MY "magic marker". SO precious!!!

Last weekend we had the amazing opportunity to present at the UCET (Utah Coalition of Educational Technology) Conference. The hot topic this year was all about using iPads in the classroom. Most of the classes we attended focused on all of the cool apps available to support education. Here are 4 apps that we're dying to share!!

Three Ring (top left) - This is Natalie's favorite thing she learned throughout the conference! Three Ring is an online digital portfolio for your students! You can upload files to each student's name or simply snap a picture of your student's work and it places it directly into that student's online digital file. It's amazing - such a great way to organize student work electronically!

Doceri (top right) - Great app for turning your iPad into an interactive whiteboard. Allows you to access your iPad through your computer.

Reflector (bottom left) - An app for your computer that allows you to access your iPad from your computer/projector. This is all you need to project your iPad on your whiteboard which bypasses the need for an Apple TV and/or the iPad projector connector.

Splashtop2 (bottom right) - An app that lets you access your computer remotely. Allows you to navigate your entire computer through your iPad. It's extremely helpful when showing websites and PowerPoints to students as you are no longer tied to your computer - you can walk around your room and still navigate your computer!

We had a fun time presenting our sessions. A few of our followers even came to meet us! I think we can officially say that Susie Q is our cutest follower - she came to both of our sessions and even brought some friends along! We also met the sweet Joell from Totally Terrific Teaching.

I {Natalie} attended two of Lorrie Cook's workshops and was wowed both times! She's the one that convinced me to purchase the subscription to Splashtop2 and to buy Reflector. She also sold me on the iMovie app which my students are already enjoying!! I felt a little silly asking for her to take a pic with me, but I felt like she was so inspiring that I had to put her on the blog!

Other highlights of the conference included an inspiring keynote address by Adam Scott Bellows, hanging out with our friend Megan (she went to college with us and is our sorority sister), and the day when both Rachelle and I showed up wearing animal prints!

Overall, this conferences was a wonderful experience and we hope to continue presenting in the future!
