Two of the champions of preppy street style Mark Mc Nairy and Pharrell Williams have teamed up to make a joint capsule collection under the moniker of Bee Line. Mc Nairy (or Mc Nasty to his pals) is no stranger to collaboration having recently worked with Bathing Ape and Pro Keds to name a few. With his creative director role at Woolrich Woolen Mills and his own New Amsterdam label causing great waves what can we expect from these two teaming up?

Well of course, when it’s McNairy, shoes are expected and he delivers. He’s done a black lace-up brogue boot with the signature coloured sole; yellow or brick are the choices – if you’re gonna do it you gotta go yellow! Boots are high priority this season with Oliver Spencer talking about bringing back his work boot for winter.

When it comes to the clothes, two pieces that caught my eye were the shirt in signature McNairy “stitch two shirts together” style; this is less the oxford button down style we get from New Amsterdam, but a more rugged street-wear style, forsaking the stripes and going for solid colours in a heavier fabric. The second is a piece I saw Mr. Williams wearing in a picture recently and would expect it comes from his own influence – a green puffa jacket/shirt. We have seen a lot of overshirts and double shirt being sported recently but this is both practical and very desirable. They have managed to make a padded shirt which isn’t too bulky but will keep you warmer and drier than the overshirt.

Heralding a long staying power in the modelling world, Gisele has certainly been around the block a few times – 1994 was the year she debuted! But boy her appeal still lives on, what with her booking half a dozen campaigns for this season alone. Versace, Givenchy, Salvatore Ferragamo, Esprit, Versace jeans – just your average run-of-the-mill fashion labels…

But what is her secret? What is this modelling x-factor she possesses? What is it about this superhuman beauty that keeps her in demand?

The modelling industry continuously churns out new faces. From Karlie Kloss to Georgia May Jagger, Miranda Kerr to Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Famed as they are, none of them have credentials that quite match up to those of Gisele. Perhaps all of her positive ‘Namaste’; the yoga-practising, organic-eating, child-rearing (and ultimately patronising) ‘I am the sh*t’ attitude is really working for her? Who knows?

It is undeniable that she works her ass off (excuse the pun!) to keep her body in shape. Forget the up-an’-coming wannabes, the awkward, gap-toothed,  candy-coloured hair models. Classic beauty, superhuman attributes and serene sex appeal are the key to steadfast staying power in the world of fashion and advertising.

I’m sorry, but RESPECT. Rupturing conventions, expectations and etiquette in one fell belted, orange, collar-ific swoop.

And that hair? Dunst has swiftly elevated herself to the original Virgin Suicides kudos in my book.

This was the weekly get-together – dining, drinking, dancing, discussing. Commiserations and celebrations hand-in-hand, spilling secrets over cups of tea, being comforted with a round of Mojitos and female reassurances. And then BOOM: the party’s over. You wake up one morning and look around; all of your friends have met someone, fallen in love, shacked up, planning round-the-world trips, engagements, weddings! Not one soldier left! That dismissed phone number scrawled on a beer mat turns into an overnight love-story, couples begin to form rapidly, weekend-breaks are planned, cosy couples dinners arranged. And it’s just you. On your lonesome. When you are afforded the opportunity to catch up (few and far between these days; couples weekly diaries fill up so quickly) the discussion revolves almost completely around proposals and save-the-dates and dresses and table arrangements and main-course options and gift lists).

So Happy

And the Ring! The ring, the ring, the ring! Endless discussion on the right ring, the perfect ring, the ‘One’. Thing is, why should you be penalised for other people’s life choices? Why do you have to wait for someone to get down on bended knee with the offer of being shackled to them forever more? Why should that be the only time in your life a dazzling amount of money is spent on a dazzling and sentimental piece of jewellery?

Pish posh to that. I say, go forth and buy your own ladies. Why should you have to wait until you’re Settled Down and Loved Up (boring!) to acquire some serious jewels? Splash out! Create your own sentimental story: To Me, Love Me. Check out Samara James and go get yourself something special and meaningful. It’s an investment either way and you can flash your sparkler in people’s faces and wait for the uncomfortable silences when you exlain that you actually just proposed to yourself…

Some colours are easier to pull off than others, so if you wanna go all out, invest in orange, pink and blue, but stay away from green and yellow – you only need one item in this colour, because:  a.) Everyone is definitely gonna notice if you wear it twice in one week (mare) and b.) It’s the most difficult colour to tone down when neon falls off the fashion radar. The other colours can be worked into a dull outfit to brighten it up but there’s no way you can stop neon yellow burning the retinas of everyone around you. I know you don’t want to hear it, and I don’t want to say it, but we can’t depend on the Runway Gods to keep these bright colours on trend for as long as we’d like.

But look at this lacy, wispy piece of decadent fluff! What a beautiful brassiere! And it has push-up! And multi-strap! And you can get it in ivory or with neon-pink piped lining! And those – those tangerine cropped pants. They have the black pair, but if I got the tangerine pair, I’d be so much happier! And I’d probably smell like Summer too!  If I got those tangerine pants, I could match them with my zebra-print t-shirt, but I’d probably need to buy that gold neck-collar. And, would you look at that? It’s 50% off jewellery. So I’ll get the gold collar to match the pants and then maybe I should get those stacked bangles and they have that bronze body harness – I should get that too. And probably a black tank to go under the harness. Oh God! Shoes! I’ll surely need some new shoes to with the tangerine pants. Now, that you mention it, I need another pair of trainers too. And they have the Nike Liberty range…€100, but I do like them, so very, very much.

Trick is, you can set out on your night looking the business, but come casino-a-clock, are you still going to looking so polished? I think the key when championing the casino look is to go for grungey-glam, so people won’t notice a potential rip in your tights or a slight disharmony in your hemline. And of course you can wear your sunglasses at night. You’re in a casino for crying out loud.

I like shirts. Whether they have long sleeves or buttoned-down collars or even no collar, what I like most about a shirt is when they fit well (this is a mix of personal preference and a good shirt) . So you can imagine my excitement when WWIWT send me on a voucher to use this new online service in exchange for these words you are reading now!

Shirts are funny things. I am lucky that generally a medium shirt fits me and 15.5 fits me with not too much excess. I don’t like my shirts to be beaten on to me nor do I like to look like I am wearing a potato sack that has mated with a duvet cover.

So it was with great excitement I logged onto www.neronote.com and created an account, ready to get to work on my new creation.

The first thing I would like to bring your attention to is the choice; every colour, fabric, cut, collar button is represented and available to be added to your shirt.  It is because of this, I think it’s good practice to have an idea what you want before you begin.  Every step and choice is well accompanied by drop down menus explaining the options and what they are good for; all the same I would suggest either working from a shirt you already own or a picture of one you have already seen.

CHOICE!

It is also advisable to know what you will be using the shirt for,

•    Is it an everyday shirt that will not be worn with a tie and maybe occasionally will have the sleeves rolled up?
•    Will it be worn with a tie/bowtie and cufflinks?
•    Will it be worn everyday for work with a suit and tie; flexible?

Even more choice!

When I was deciding what I would like the shirt for, I knew that I was going to a wedding in the summer, and my blue shirt – which goes well with my summer suit, was a little heavy for the sunny climate. A lighter option would look better. I also knew I was going to be wearing a tie – maybe not the best option for the weather but I can never resist the chance to wear a bright colourful summer tie.  The fabric I chose was a light-coloured blue Oxford which was also a light fabric – ideal for warmer climates. There are 1073 other fabrics to choose from which are easily navigated via colour pattern and weight.

Once you have decided what the shirt is for, you can start to get a good idea of what your shirt will look like and then you can move on to the fit. I like a fitted shirt but do not like it to be very figure hugging. I decided to go for the Italian close fitting option this seemed to be in line with my preference.  As I said earlier, I find that shirts generally fit me for my neck size as I like them slightly roomy I also generally wear them tucked in.  The site offers a made-to-measure service which also has a handy video demonstrating how to take your measurements (always get someone to help you) and they will keep your size profile for future visits which makes reordering very efficient.

The collar I chose was the classic Italian, which boasts of being the choice of those who love wearing ties (how could I resist). This collar is a little longer and is very suited to a tie; if this shirt is being ordered for somebody I would recommend a slightly shorter collar or a French collar which are very popular at the moment.

After you have chosen all of these options, the rest is personal preference. I decided to get a pocket as there is always something that can go in and if the jacket must come off ,it is the perfect place for a phone or a pen.  After much deliberation I decided to go for buttons on the cuff, I have many great pairs of cufflinks and many shirts they fit into but find that it can make your outfit a bit bulky and I have had one or two situations where they didn’t make it into the suitcase or suit bag (believe me this is one situation a safety pin will not fix).  The one other addition I decided not to go with was a monogram – I will discuss this further later on.

After all my decisions were made I sent my order through and after I had received order confirmation, put it out of my mind until it arrived.

Swit-Swoo - Le Shirt

The shirt can take up to a month to arrive, the shirt is being tailored to many specifications so this is not uncommon, if you are ordering it with a particular event in mind do it as quickly as possible as you want to try it on with the outfit before going and you do not want to go totally to the wire waiting for it and getting worried it may not arrive on time.

When my shirt arrived it was in a box so it didn’t pick up any unwanted creases in transit, once I took out the pins and collar supports gave it a little shake it was ready to wear.  I immediately tried it on with my suit and adjusted the cuffs and was very happy with how it fitted.  The sleeves were a perfect length and the collar was a right fit, it looks great under a jacket and just as good without it.

A Cuff Above the Rest

I think it is important to point out a few points in relation to using this type of service. It is very important that you have a good idea of what you would like before you purchase. The explanations are spot on and very helpful but there is many options, so you need to know what you want. And also what you don’t want! The price of the shirt is an important factor (the shirts will range from €100 upwards including postage), this is not expensive for a tailored shirt but still expensive enough that you will want to really enjoy and get good use out of it.  It is on this point I return to choices  – such as a monogram. I have never really enjoyed it but if you are using this as a special treat it may be no harm to have your initials on the shirt (same colour or very close would be my preference), I do like the blogger who has “your name” monogrammed onto the cuffs of his shirts.

Just remember all the times you were in a shop admiring a shirt and wishing it didn’t have the pocket or it was a little tighter.

I was impressed by this service, I had a few practice runs at the options before I sent it off so I knew I was totally certain with all my choices, I am looking forward to breaking it out for what is already going to be a special occasion.  Clothes should tell a story and before even seeing it you have written the introduction, it is always great to think that this is my shirt and know it really is that.

There is a new epidemic sweeping the celebrity universe* which causes famous people to offer the sign of peace. Experts say the cause is yet unknown but the symptoms include a hand-shaped peace symbol, sometimes followed by a rictus grin, a twitch in one eye, a hip extension or all three. This movement is always in response to the flash-light of a camera. Sources close to the problem have labelled it ‘Peace Fingers’.

There is fierce speculation as to its genesis; some critics say it dates back to the Roswell UFO Incident in 1947, whereafter celebrities attempted to make contact with aliens through tiny tele-kinetic signals via the fore-fingers.  Others say it is the natural degradation of muscles in the hand through over-use of cash-flashing; typically in incidents involving chauffeurs, waiters and lap-dancing hostesses. Those with less ‘cash to flash’ have countered this theory and believe it is simply a lethargy, known only to ‘important’ people, wherein the full extension of the hand for a wave or greeting is simply a waste of time in these busy people’s lives.

Some observers have put forth the argument that perhaps these celebrities are genuinely attempting to offer peace to mankind.

As of yet, there have been no official comments from the victims themselves.

Although, not too much is known about this epidemic yet, medical experts believe it will result in mass repetitive strain injury.

I’m far more interested in looking inward at the Irish vanguard of fashion trail-blazers. Celestine Cooney please take a bow. Cooney’s ascent into the higher echelons of fashion is legendary. She started styling with InDublin and Mongrel magazine here in Ireland. Her urban aesthetic and raw styling propelled her into the Dazed and Confused milieu over in London. She stayed with the underground British taste-makers for a good jaunt and then started up her own Biannual fashion bible called Twin. Along the way, she styled everyone and everything from Ashish, Levi’s and Topshop to Rihanna, Jude Law and Florence and the Machine.

Ok job credentials put forth. Why do I dig this lady? Well I have always been one to wear my love of tracksuits on my sleeve and Cooney herself is quite vocal about her collections of Nike Air Max and tracksuit attire. Cooney embraces her inner tomboy, favours dishevelled and unkempt over polished and refined and is always, always directional without veering into lunacy.  Her secret weapon (how does she do it?) is that she perpetually stands out from the fashion crowd without trying too hard.

Wanna know how to dress like her? At times, you almost want to defy logical fashion taste. Isabel Marant leggings with scruffy trainers. A Christopher Kane dress with a sportscap. Minimal, edgy, casual but directional – labels like Acne in Brown Thomas and Simone Rocha in Havana Boutique.  Cooney would pair a whimsical, Simone Rocha chiffon blouse with a leather mini-skirt and a pair of Nikes. Cooney does like her street-wear – check out Blind Tiger Collective and This Greedy Pig; two Irish design companies that are pumping out the best in illustrated and graphic t-shirts. Lash a cool t-shirt on top of a pair of leather trousers, wrap with an oversized trench and top with a woolly hat and you’re laughing, Cooney-style.

Some people scream fashion (Gok Wan perhaps); others enforce it (Wintour and her steely glare). Cooney just casually throws it out there; but by God – you knows it.

The kicks you choose gotta be comfortable, so wedges are a shoe-in (hnar hnar) and these metallic and grey suede sporty numbers are just the ticket. (That’s if you haven’t realised that wellies are actually your best option…)

A cover up will be much needed also. This simple black mac will tie up the look nicely, without conforming to OTT race-going attire (this usually involves all sorts of ruffle- and feather- adorned wrap and throwover things)

Now, in my book, an outfit is not an outfit unless it has some blingin’, bangin’, take-your-eye-out, statement jewels. For the look above, I’d be inclined to lash a ginormous gold neckpiece on top, and hold back on everything else. The options below are a bit pie-in-the-sky, being a) inordinately expensive (the Yves neckplate is in the squillions) and b) only available online (but good for future reference).

Now, the excellent news is that the dress, shoes and jacket can all be acquired in Topshop (POST-HASTE!), the jewels are a no-go…but inspiration at least. Did you know this bracelet is a 'Festival-Season Must Have'?

I have nothing against this bracelet per se. It’s not really my cup of tea…it reminds me of those naff ‘friendship’ bracelets of the 90’s. Or the cuffed wristwear of international hippies…y’know the frayed, woven bands worn as a travelling badge of honour; a currency of credibility almost. But this bracelet has almost been ‘gentrified’ – stylising something best forgotten (in my book).

Mainly, however, I’m a little indifferent to the bracelet. My beef is this. The Sunday Times Style Magazine announced it as part of ‘The Hot List’ last weekend:

Again, harmless enough style advice.

Now, in what parallel universe is it ok to spend the price of two festival tickets (three if you’re bouncing around Europe) on an innocuous bracelet? A bracelet that plunders the sentimental simplicity of youthful travellers and 90’s friendships?

Colours and Patterns

The hot-to-trot colour for this summer’s dresses is mint-green; it has been adapted in its various hues by most international designers. But don’t worry if mint ain’t your thang. Bright colours are still a poppin’, particularly shades such as yellow, tangerine and flouro pink. Floral prints are in vogue and brands such as Proenza Schouler, Valentino and Anna Sui have used them in abundance in their offerings. Whether paired with other colours, bold and vivid or soft and pastel; flowers are very hot this summer. Tribal prints in geometric designs, especially the ones in earthen hues such as brown and black, are also very trendy, but you can stick a bit of neon in there for a party-look. Elie Saab’s gorgeous sequinned gown, Paco Rabanne’s shimmering hues and Giorgio Armani’s metallic colours; all of these confirm that a bit of razzle and dazzle will always be around.

 Dress Lengths

The airy maxi in swirling soft fabrics such as chiffon, taffeta and organza will be seen across the boutique landscape this summer. Designers such as Naeem Khan and Cavalli have given us the maxi in leopard and polka dot prints, whereas Emilio Pucci and D&G have given us multi-layered dresses in prints inspired from the scarves. Mini dresses are still very fashionable but the Midi dress has really come kicking and screaming into 2012 – look no further than the newly-esteemed Victoria Beckham for midi-inspiration.

Lace and Peplum and Shapes

Fashion never tires of lace, but this summer lace has never been so soft and delicate. Oscar De La Renta and Preen have used them in their summer dress collections for serious, fashion storytelling. Peplums have also made a dramatic reappearance in their casual and evening dresses. Alexander McQueen and Badgley Mischka have incorporated large peplums into their summer dresses, whereas Versace has added long and flat peplums into their latest dresses. Asymmetrical hemlines are going to be the trendsetters this summer. The skewered length has been adopted across a whole range of clothing items, but the real drama happens with the dresses. Some designers such as Missoni have just cut hemlines on one side, whereas others have used variations of this trend on many new dresses.

The Summer Shoe

Well you can’t wear a dress without a pair of heels right? Pointed metallic toes are the latest craze among fashion-conscious women, particularly in bright neon colours. We have stacked sandals with ribbons and corsages, but we’ve also got the more rustic sandals – braided, woven – the espadrille! There’s also bubbly plastic fun, with lots of jelly shoes and clear-plastic mules. We have the stacked, wedged trainer – you can go sporty or pretty, with flashes of leather of pretty flower prints. For a very casual look, there are lots of trainers and plimsoll’s with crazy Aztec prints and leather, lazer-cut brogues. The predominant colours with footwear this season are pastel shades, but many of them will come embellished with floral and animal prints. Want some real advice? Get a little of everything…

As of late, I question the motives behind certain campaigns and advertisements that I have seen, almost to the point where they could be deemed soft porn.

Don’t get me wrong, fashion imagery excites me more than you could imagine – creating romantic, eccentric, other-worldly adventures where the models share their extreme beauty and their innate talent to showcase mouth-watering items of clothing and accessories BUT I am not so inclined to be sold by their subtle come-hither gestures where personal areas are prominently placed.

One such brand that has leaned further in this direction as of late is American Apparel. Renowned for their all-natural, classic, basic fashions, their fondness of showcasing girls…ahem…areas is surely casting questionable shadows over their branding. An avid fan of the American Apparel lines myself, their campaigns do disappoint in that too much of the human anatomy is focused on. What exactly are they selling, clothing or skin? Make your mind up people, please.
